People with mental health problems are almost never dangerous. In fact, they are more likely to be the victims than the perpetrators. At the same time, mental illness has been the common denominator in one act of mass violence after another. ~ Roy Blunt
Mental Health Problems quotes by Roy Blunt
We can have a large impact on the prevention and amelioration of abuse, drug problems, violence, mental health problems, and dysfunction in families. ~ Steven C. Hayes
Mental Health Problems quotes by Steven C. Hayes
The social and economic impact of the earthquake is still very present and is contributing to mental health problems, the mother who lost her husband, or children who lost their parents, and who now are responsible for the whole family, taking children to school and providing food. This transition is still causing stress and depression. ~ Reggie Fils-Aime
Mental Health Problems quotes by Reggie Fils-Aime
It was a place for people with mental health problems and not alcoholics; as though the two could be neatly divided like that; as though the world was black and white and not a murky grey. ~ Victoria Spry
Mental Health Problems quotes by Victoria Spry
When looking at triggers for mental health problems, therapists often identify an intense change in someone's life as a major factor. ~ Matt Haig
Mental Health Problems quotes by Matt Haig
Suicide and mental health problems have no boundaries. ~ Santosh Kalwar
Mental Health Problems quotes by Santosh Kalwar
How many mental health problems, from drug addiction to self-injurious behavior, start as attempts to cope with the unbearable physical pain of our emotions? If Darwin was right, the solution requires finding ways to help people alter the inner sensory landscape of their bodies. Until recently, this bidirectional communication between body and mind was largely ignored by Western science, even as it had long been central to traditional healing practices in many other parts of the world, notably in India and China. Today it is transforming our understanding of trauma and recovery. ~ Bessel A. Van Der Kolk
Mental Health Problems quotes by Bessel A. Van Der Kolk
Many soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from serious, long-term, physical and mental health problems, due to their service. It is unconscionable to cut the already limited health care benefits available to these brave men and women. ~ Mark Dayton
Mental Health Problems quotes by Mark Dayton
One of the downsides of working in philosophy is that it attracts a lot of people with mental-health problems. ~ Joseph Heath
Mental Health Problems quotes by Joseph Heath
I continually still fight every day for my life, not only still battling mental health problems but battling multiple sclerosis, which also has depression as one of its side effects. ~ Jennifer Holliday
Mental Health Problems quotes by Jennifer Holliday
PinkNews coined the term "trans broken arm syndrome" to describe it: "Healthcare
providers assume that all medical issues are a result of a person being trans.
Everything - from mental health problems to, yes, broken arms. ~ Maya Dusenbery
Mental Health Problems quotes by Maya Dusenbery
The impact of the earthquake on mental health was huge and unimaginably deep in people's lives. Some lost all benchmarks and references because of their great loss, we still have people coming to clinics with mental health problems related to the earthquake. They talk about the earthquake, about being under the rubble. ~ Reggie Fils-Aime
Mental Health Problems quotes by Reggie Fils-Aime
1 in 5 people have dandruff. 1 in 4 people have mental health problems. I've had both. ~ Ruby Wax
Mental Health Problems quotes by Ruby Wax
Loving yourself is vital in the fight against mental health problems, so I want to encourage y'all to focus on loving yourselves first ... each and every one of you is worthy. ~ Jared Padalecki
Mental Health Problems quotes by Jared Padalecki
Looking at mental health problems the same way we look at other medical problems is factually correct - the best bet for reducing the disabling symptoms and the only way to lessen the stigma and blame that traditionally double or triple the pain. ~ Mark Vonnegut
Mental Health Problems quotes by Mark Vonnegut
At a talk I gave at a church months later, I spoke about Charlie and the plight of incarcerated children. Afterward, an older married couple approached me and insisted that they had to help Charlie. I tried to dissuade these kind people from thinking they could do anything, but I gave them my card and told them they could call me. I didn't expect to hear from them, but within days they called, and they were persistent. We eventually agreed that they would write a letter to Charlie and send it to me to pass on to him. When I received the letter weeks later, I read it. It was remarkable.
Mr. and Mrs. Jennings were a white couple in their mid-seventies from a small community northeast of Birmingham. They were kind and generous people who were active in their local United Methodist church. They never missed a Sunday service and were especially drawn to children in crisis. They spoke softly and always seemed to be smiling but never appeared to be anything less than completely genuine and compassionate. They were affectionate with each other in a way that was endearing, frequently holding hands and leaning into each other. They dressed like farmers and owned ten acres of land, where they grew vegetables and lived simply. Their one and only grandchild, whom they had helped raise, had committed suicide when he was a teenager, and they had never stopped grieving for him. Their grandson struggled with mental health problems during his short life, but he was a smart kid and they ~ Bryan Stevenson
Mental Health Problems quotes by Bryan Stevenson
The study also included the disturbing revelation that most of the troops who reported having mental health problems also reported that they did not seek or did not receive care for their problems. ~ John M. McHugh
Mental Health Problems quotes by John M. McHugh
Yoga talks about cat-pose, dog-pose, camel-pose, monkey-pose, bird-pose etc. Why there are so many animal poses? Animals release their emotions and tensions by movements based on their body sensations. But our amygdala in the brain is carrying the "fight or flight response"; it has forgotten the art of releasing the tensions. As human beings, when we are aware about the sensations, we can release that by aware, slow movements. If you do not give movements to the body parts, energy will be stuck and blood circulation will be disturbed. Gradually, that creates chronic physical and mental health problems. ~ Amit Ray
Mental Health Problems quotes by Amit Ray
More than 35 percent of the children exposed to a single traumatic event will develop serious mental health problems .. The real crisis of Katrina is the hundreds of thousands of ravaged, displaced and traumatized children. ~ Bruce D. Perry
Mental Health Problems quotes by Bruce D. Perry
I don't think anything good is happening. I think we're paying the price for it. I think while crime in general is going down, youth crime is going up. I think mental health problems of the youth are going up. You can't show causality. It's a hard stretch. ~ Edward Zigler
Mental Health Problems quotes by Edward Zigler
The pursuit of material-external things as if they can provide deep and lasting happiness is contributing to a dwindling of real meaning and is a factor contributing to an increase in mental health problems. It just isn't possible to fill the hole inside us by piling up the things outside us. pg9 ~ Dr Stephen McKenzie And Dr Craig Hassed
Mental Health Problems quotes by Dr Stephen McKenzie And Dr Craig Hassed
DID survivors are failed twice: once at the initial point of their abuse/trauma and again when the system fails to acknowledge their needs, even doubting their diagnosis if they have been fortunate enough to obtain one. This cannot be right in the twenty-first century. ~ Joan Coleman
Mental Health Problems quotes by Joan Coleman
~~You are not alone~~ No, really. Literally. Maybe you have always known (or suspected) this. Maybe this news is shocking, baffling, dismaying, even unbelievable to you. Despite what you might believe or may have been told about yourself, you are not just 'moody'. Nor are you crazy or defective or possessed. You have what is commonly called 'multiple personalities'. ~ A.T.W.
Mental Health Problems quotes by A.T.W.
Work is only part of a man's life; play, family, church, individual and group contacts, educational opportunities, the intelligent exercise of citizenship, all play a part in a well-rounded life. Workers are men and women with potentialities for mental and spiritual development as well as for physical health. We are paying the price today of having too long sidestepped all that this means to the mental, moral, and spiritual health of our nation. ~ Mary Barnett Gilson
Mental Health Problems quotes by Mary Barnett Gilson
We speak about losing our minds as if it is a bad thing. I say, lose your mind. Do it purposefully. Find out who you really are beyond your thoughts and beliefs. Lose your mind, find your soul. ~ Vironika Tugaleva
Mental Health Problems quotes by Vironika Tugaleva
Prize the natural spaces and shorelines most of all, because once they're gone, with rare exceptions they're gone forever. In our bones we need the natural curves of hills, the scent of chapparal, the whisper of pines, the possibility of wildness. We require these patches of nature for our mental health and our spiritual resilience. ~ Richard Louv
Mental Health Problems quotes by Richard Louv
When I left my parents' home when I was 19, I went to the University of Florida, and within 24 hours was in the mental health department. And within 20 minutes, I was being told by the director there that they didn't have what I needed there. ~ Darrell Hammond
Mental Health Problems quotes by Darrell Hammond
Make no mistake. The greatest destroyer of ecology. The greatest source of waste, depletion and pollution. The greatest purveyor of violence, war, crime, poverty, animal abuse and inhumanity. The greatest generator of personal and social neurosis, mental disorders, depression, anxiety. Not to mention the greatest source of social paralysis, stopping us from moving into new methodologies for personal health, global sustainability and progress on this planet, is not some corrupt government or legislation.
Not some rogue corporation or banking cartel.
Not some flaw of human nature and not some secret cabal that controls the world.
It is the socioeconomic system itself at its very foundation. ~ Peter Joseph
Mental Health Problems quotes by Peter Joseph
Most fights originate as a consequence of blaming others for one's own emotional issues. Assuming responsibility for these emotions will most likely make the relationship a healthy and balanced one. Boundaries help foster the wellbeing of one's mental health and self-esteem. ~ German Muhlenberg
Mental Health Problems quotes by German Muhlenberg
I try to make my bed every day for mental health. Coming home to an unmade bed or a room with clothes all over will depress me. ~ David Alan Grier
Mental Health Problems quotes by David Alan Grier
The buying of a self-help book is the most desperate of all human acts. It means you've lost your mind completely: You've entrusted your mental health to a self-aggrandizing twit with a psychology degree and a yen for a yacht. ~ Cynthia Heimel
Mental Health Problems quotes by Cynthia Heimel
The strongest yet the biggest battle is to fight from yourself, for yourself. No one can even imagine the battle one goes through every day. So be strong, be courageous as You are Amazing! And the greatest warrior ~ Meeran W. Malik
Mental Health Problems quotes by Meeran W. Malik
Volunteering to help others is the right thing to do, and it also boosts personal happiness; a review of research by the Corporation for National and Community Service shows that those who aid the causes they value tend to be happier and in better health. They show fewer signs of physical and mental aging. And it's not just that helpful people also tend to be healthier and happier; helping others causes happiness. "Be selfless, if only for selfish reasons," as one of my happiness paradoxes holds. About one-quarter of Americans volunteer, and of those, a third volunteer for more than a hundred hours each year. ~ Gretchen Rubin
Mental Health Problems quotes by Gretchen Rubin
It was hard to remember what I'd been so scared of. Being treated differently? Lack of acceptance? I was the one who hadn't accepted myself for who I was. I was the one who needed to be comfortable in my own skin. I hoped I could do that moving forward. ~ Kasie West
Mental Health Problems quotes by Kasie West
My heart is sinking and my chest physically aches from the heavy sadness that it carries within. ~ Shannon Perry
Mental Health Problems quotes by Shannon Perry
We readily go to the health club when our doctor suggests we need more exercise, but we regularly neglect the 'mental health club' that our well-being more truly requires. ~ Pico Iyer
Mental Health Problems quotes by Pico Iyer
I started crying because this would all disappear including me and no one seemed to realise it. Did no one feel what I was feeling. ~ Stefanie Sybens
Mental Health Problems quotes by Stefanie Sybens
and you will realize
that fear is a welcome
friend at this table
it has been waiting
to tell its story
for such a long time
and for those who choose
to listen, I promise
that it will be
the most wonderful of tales
you will have ever heard ~ M.M. Van Der Reijden
Mental Health Problems quotes by M.M. Van Der Reijden
I do not sleep because I am not only afraid of the monsters at my door, but also of the monsters my own mind can conjure. The ones that live within. ~ Samantha Shannon
Mental Health Problems quotes by Samantha Shannon
So, anyway, I think that cultivating positive mental states like kindness and compassion definitely leads to better psychological health and happiness. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Mental Health Problems quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
Instead of complaining about problems in your stomach, mind what goes into your stomach to cause the problems in your stomach. ~ Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Mental Health Problems quotes by Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Rather than being fearful of not detecting disease, both patients and doctors should fear healthcare. The best way to avoid medical errors is to avoid medical care. The default should be: I am well. The way to stay that way is to keep making good choices - not to have my doctor look for problems. ~ John Mandrola
Mental Health Problems quotes by John Mandrola
Discussions of health care in the U.S. usually focus on insurance companies, but, whatever their problems, they're not the main driver of health-care inflation: providers are. ~ James Surowiecki
Mental Health Problems quotes by James Surowiecki
I already knew to eat clean and listen to my body, to only eat when I was in a calm mental state. Everyone knew. But when you're fat in the head, it's never about knowing the answers. It's about living them. ~ Stephanie Klein
Mental Health Problems quotes by Stephanie Klein
Chakras are energy centers where the body's life energy is concentrated. The concept of chakra is found in the Hindu tradition in India & some disciplines of Buddhism. Of the seven major chakras, six are located along the spinal cord & one is located at the crown of the head. The chakras are closely related to the endocrine system, which secretes hormones, and they are known to influence each and every part of the human body through the autonomic nervous system. They are highly attuned sensors that respond to the state of your physical, mental & spiritual health. ~ Ilchi Lee
Mental Health Problems quotes by Ilchi Lee
Emotional healing requires more than simply changing how you feel. Your emotions are merely symptoms of the problem - not the problem itself. Even when they hurt. ~ Jessica Moore
Mental Health Problems quotes by Jessica Moore
Do not allow yourself to be bogged down by negative thinking. ~ Asa Don Brown
Mental Health Problems quotes by Asa Don Brown
everybody loves me because i'm good at making people feel good. i'm good at making people feel good because i have had a lot of practice on myself ~ Sabrina Benaim
Mental Health Problems quotes by Sabrina Benaim
No one would ever say that someone with a broken arm or a broken leg is less than a whole person, but people say that or imply that all the time about people with mental illness. ~ Elyn R. Saks
Mental Health Problems quotes by Elyn R. Saks
Thoughts. Thoughts bombard my head, my brain. My psyche ~ Jonathan Harnisch
Mental Health Problems quotes by Jonathan Harnisch
By focusing on reality and treating everything in relation to everything else we can raise our awareness above the narrow perspective of what we experience in our daily lives, and solve our problems using a different level of thinking than the one that created them. As a society our focus should be on health, sustainability, education, and ensuring justice and liberty among all individuals. To achieve this we must inform the public of the situation we are in and encourage a positive change in our behavior. We need to evolve our consciousness and change the way that we look at the world ~ Joseph P. Kauffman
Mental Health Problems quotes by Joseph P. Kauffman
As the result of some observations I have made in recent years, I propose to add two new and previously undescribed varieties to the various forms of insanity with fixed ideas, whose underlying phenomenology is essentially phobic. The two new terms I would like to put forth, following the nomenclature currently accepted by leading clinicians, are dysmorphophobia and taphephobia.

The first condition consists of the sudden appearance and fixation in the consciousness of the idea of one's own deformity; the individual fears that he has become deformed (dysmorphos) or might become deformed, and experiences at this thought a feeling of an inexpressible disaster… The ideas of being ugly are not, in themselves, morbid; in fact, they occur to many people in perfect mental health, awakening however only the emotions normally felt when this possibility is contemplated.

But, when one of these ideas occupies someone's attention repeatedly on the same day, and aggressively and persistently returns to monopolise his attention, refusing to remit by any conscious effort; and when in particular the emotion accompanying it becomes one of fear, distress, anxiety, and anguish, compelling the individual to modify his behaviour and to act in a pre-determined and fixed way, then the psychological phenomena has gone beyond the bounds of normal, and may validly be considered to have entered the realm of psychopathology.

The dysmorphophobic, indeed, is a veritably unh ~ Enrico Agostino Morselli
Mental Health Problems quotes by Enrico Agostino Morselli
I don't remember how I hurt myself,
The pain mine
Long enough for me
To lose the wound that invented it ~ Jericho Brown
Mental Health Problems quotes by Jericho Brown
There are no free and democratic and wealthy countries in the world that have US rate of gun violence. We have to worry about loners and alienated people. We have to do better on mental health. ~ David Brooks
Mental Health Problems quotes by David Brooks
To be alive at all involves some risk. Harold Macmillan ~ Anonymous
Mental Health Problems quotes by Anonymous
Progression and regression go hand in hand with mental health. It is a tough illness. You often take one step forward and ten steps back. ~ Theresa Larsen
Mental Health Problems quotes by Theresa Larsen
working more than 40 hours a week was stupid, wasteful, dangerous, and expensive - and the most telling sign of dangerously incompetent management to boot," Robinson writes. Further, more than a hundred years of research shows that "every hour you work over 40 hours a week is making you less effective and productive over both the short and the long haul." Really! Even though most people think this makes intuitive sense, they are still surprised to hear that it is actually true. This common sense is so widely ignored that overwork - and the problems with health, happiness, and productivity that it brings - is epidemic. ~ Christine Carter
Mental Health Problems quotes by Christine Carter
In a typical mental health catch-22, the alienating nature of depression tends to keep its sufferers from finding their way to the very support groups that might help them. ~ Elizabeth Wurtzel
Mental Health Problems quotes by Elizabeth Wurtzel
I have suffered from depression for most of my life. It is an illness. ~ Adam Ant
Mental Health Problems quotes by Adam Ant
The effort to cure disease has been, without doubt, the greatest curse that has ever been perpetrated upon the human race. The idea that disease is something that must be cured, the idea that it is something that can be cured, must be eradicated from the human mind before we can hope to arrive at a rational solution of our health problems. ~ Herbert M. Shelton
Mental Health Problems quotes by Herbert M. Shelton
Holding one's self responsible is a critical feature in stigma and in the generation of shame since violation of standards, rules, and goals are insufficient in its elicitation unless responsibility can be placed on the self. Stigma may differ from other elicitors of shame and guilt, in part because it is a social appearance factor. The degree to which the stigma is socially apparent is the degree to which one must negotiate the issue of blame, not only for one's self but between one's self and the other who is witness to the stigma. Stigmatization is a much more powerful elicitor of shame and guilt in that it requires a negotiation not only between one's self and one's attributions, but between one's self and the attributions of others. ~ Michael Lewis
Mental Health Problems quotes by Michael Lewis
I remembered what Morrie said during our visit: "The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it."

"Morrie true to these words, had developed his own culture – long before he got sick. Discussion groups, walks with friends, dancing to his music in the Harvard Square church. He started a project called Greenhouse, where poor people could receive mental health services. He read books to find new ideas for his classes, visited with colleagues, kept up with old students, wrote letters to distant friends. He took more time eating and looking at nature and wasted not time in front of TV sitcoms or "Movies of the Week." He had created a cocoon of human activities– conversations, interaction, affection–and it filled his life like an overflowing soup bowl. ~ Mitch Albom
Mental Health Problems quotes by Mitch Albom
In the 1890s, when Freud was in the dawn of his career, he was struck by how many of his female patients were revealing childhood incest victimization to him. Freud concluded that child sexual abuse was one of the major causes of emotional disturbances in adult women and wrote a brilliant and humane paper called "The Aetiology of Hysteria." However, rather than receiving acclaim from his colleagues for his ground-breaking insights, Freud met with scorn. He was ridiculed for believing that men of excellent reputation (most of his patients came from upstanding homes) could be perpetrators of incest.
Within a few years, Freud buckled under this heavy pressure and recanted his conclusions. In their place he proposed the "Oedipus complex," which became the foundation of modern psychology. According to this theory any young girl actually desires sexual contact with her father, because she wants to compete with her mother to be the most special person in his life. Freud used this construct to conclude that the episodes of incestuous abuse his clients had revealed to him had never taken place; they were simply fantasies of events the women had wished for when they were children and that the women had come to believe were real. This construct started a hundred-year history in the mental health field of blaming victims for the abuse perpetrated on them and outright discrediting of women's and children's reports of mistreatment by men.
Once abuse was denied in this way, the st ~ Lundy Bancroft
Mental Health Problems quotes by Lundy Bancroft
Genuine self esteem – please understand this – genuine self esteem is not competitive or comparative. Genuine self esteem isn't expressed by self-glorification at the expense of others, or by trying to make yourself superior to everyone else, or diminishing others in order to elevate yourself. Arrogance, boastfulness, the overestimation of your abilities, reflect low self esteem, even though we're often encouraged to believe the opposite. In human beings, joy in the simple fact of existence is a core meaning of healthy self esteem. Thus understood, how can you possibly have too much of it? ~ Nathaniel Branden
Mental Health Problems quotes by Nathaniel Branden
When we continuously
snuggle up to antiquated
ideas, we shut our eyes
against the light of our
potential. ~ Kristen Lee
Mental Health Problems quotes by Kristen Lee
I detest love lyrics. I think one of the causes of bad mental health in the United States is that people have been raised on 'love lyrics'.

You're a young kid and you hear all those 'love lyrics', right? Your parents aren't telling you the truth about love, and you can't really learn about it in school. You're getting the bulk of your 'behaviour norms' mapped out for you in the lyrics to some dumb fucking love song. It's a subconscious training that creates desire for an imaginary situation which will never exist for you. People who buy into that mythology go through life feeling that they got cheated out of something.

What I think is very cynical about some rock and roll songs -- especially today -- is the way they say: "Let's make love." What the fuck kind of wussy says shit like that in the real world? You ought to be able to say "Let's go fuck", or at least "Let's go fill-in-the-blank" -- but you gotta say "Let's make love" in order to get on the radio. This creates a semantic corruption, by changing the context in which the word 'love' is used in the song.

When they get into drooling about love as a 'romantic concept' -- especially in the lyrics of sensitive singer/songwriter types -- that's another shove in the direction of bad mental health.

Fortunately, lyrics over the last five or six years have gotten to be less and less important, with 'art rock groups' and new wavers specializing in 'nonjudgemental' or 'purposely inconse ~ Frank Zappa
Mental Health Problems quotes by Frank Zappa
We are made in the image of God, and we need to put Spirit back into the equation when we want to improve our physical and our mental health. ~ Bruce Lipton
Mental Health Problems quotes by Bruce Lipton
This disease comes with a package: shame. When any other part of your body gets sick, you get sympathy. ~ Ruby Wax
Mental Health Problems quotes by Ruby Wax
According to the surgeon general, obesity today is officially an epidemic; it is arguably the most pressing public health problem we face, costing the health care system an estimated $90 billion a year. Three of every five Americans are overweight; one of every five is obese. The disease formerly known as adult-onset diabetes has had to be renamed Type II diabetes since it now occurs so frequently in children. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association predicts that a child born in 2000 has a one-in-three chance of developing diabetes. (An African American child's chances are two in five.) Because of diabetes and all the other health problems that accompany obesity, today's children may turn out to be the first generation of Americans whose life expectancy will actually be shorter than that of their parents. The problem is not limited to America: The United Nations reported that in 2000 the number of people suffering from overnutrition--a billion--had officially surpassed the number suffering from malnutrition--800 million. ~ Michael Pollan
Mental Health Problems quotes by Michael Pollan
I wish bad brain stuff was an actual guy I could punch in the face. PTSD, panic attacks, anxiety, flashbacks, hallucinations, anything that gives you hell, could just send'em to me, I'd fight them all. [...] Stuff's a lot harder to fight when they're stuck in your own head."
"Yeah... didn't stop me from trying, though. ~ RoAnna Sylver
