"That's how you do it, son," I told him.
Cole didn't say anything. I figured his ears were still ringing, and I instantly regretted not telling him to cover them. It ended up being a pretty traumatic experience for him, and I feared he'd never want to go hunting again. Any claims that the drugs and alcohol are necessary to dull a finer sensibility are just the usual self-serving bullshit.
