It's a little-known secret, and it should probably stay that way: attempting suicide usually jump-starts your brain chemistry. There must be something about taking all those pills that either floods the brain sufficiently or depletes it so completely that balance is restored. Whatever the mechanism, the result is that you emerge on the other side of the attempt with an awareness of what it means to be alive. Simple acts seem miraculous: you can stand transfixed for hours just watching the wind ruffle the tiny hairs along the top of your arm. And always, with every sensation, is the knowledge that you must have survived for a reason. You just can't doubt it anymore. You must have a purpose, or you would have died. You have the rest of your life to discover what that purpose is. And you can't wait to start looking. ~ Terri Cheney
Mental Illness quotes by Terri Cheney
I wanted to tell her that if only something were wrong with my body it would be fine, I would rather have anything wrong with my body than something wrong with my head, but the idea seemed so involved and wearisome that I didn't say anything. I only burrowed down further in the bed. ~ Sylvia Plath
Mental Illness quotes by Sylvia Plath
What I want everyone to know is that the sun is going to rise tomorrow whether you want it to or not. Life is tragic, but it's also beautiful. ~ Project Semicolon
Mental Illness quotes by Project Semicolon
We were supposed to survive together. We were supposed to leave and live and grow old together. But instead, his death is a sacrifice for my life, a life I no longer want. ~ Halo Scot
Mental Illness quotes by Halo Scot
Kate was about to protest when something caused her to look in her mother's direction. She was standing statue-like in front of the television with that brave, painted-on smile. Then Kate realized what had caught her attention: her mother's tear-filled eyes were reflecting the on-off motion of the blinkers like a watery mirror. Kate stared transfixed at the flashing points of light that betrayed her mother's pain. The urge to tell her father how much she wanted him to be proud of her and how much he had hurt her, faded in the dark depths of her mother's eyes. ~ Sabrynne McLain
Mental Illness quotes by Sabrynne McLain
For once, I'd love if someone reacted unpredictably to death. Chant or somersault or fucking yodel to show me you have a mind of your own. ~ Halo Scot
Mental Illness quotes by Halo Scot
It is a terrible thing to grieve for someone who is not dead, not in love with someone else, but just no longer there. ~ Priya Parmar
Mental Illness quotes by Priya Parmar
All this mental illness of our occurred simply bc we lived immorally. We suffered from our immoral life, to smother our suffering we committed various abnormal acts.
I disliked him, bc I understood that he was a dirty adulterer. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Mental Illness quotes by Leo Tolstoy
I can't describe the feeling when I go down – it's down down down and there's never going to be an up again. And whatever was good isn't good any more; white becomes grey, music becomes dictionaries, honey becomes beer and the sky a curdled lemon. There's no caramel anymore. ~ John Marsden
Mental Illness quotes by John Marsden
Never underestimate the commercial value of mental illness. ~ Moriah Jovan
Mental Illness quotes by Moriah Jovan
You have to make a choice to either let the questions that are haunting you make you a better person or haunt you for the rest of your life. If you chose to let them haunt you, then guess what? It's not going to change the situation because you still won't have the answers to those questions. ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
There is always a man eager to explain my mental illness to me. They all do it so confidently, motioning to their Hemingway and Bukowski bookshelf as they compare my depression to their late-night loneliness. There is always someone that rejected them that they equate their sadness to and a bottle of gin (or a song playing, or a movie) close by that they refer to as their cure. Somehow, every soft confession of my Crazy that I hand to them turns into them pulling out pieces of themselves to prove how it really is in my head.

So many dudes I've dated have faces like doctors ready to institutionalize
and love my crazy (but only on Friday nights.)

They tell their friends about my impulsive decision making and how I "get them" more than anyone they've ever met but leave out my staring off in silence for hours and the self-inflicted bruises on my cheeks.

None of them want to acknowledge a crazy they can't cure.

They want a crazy that fits well into a trope and gives them a chance to play Hero. And they always love a Crazy that provides them material to write about.

Truth is they love me best as a cigarette cloud of impossibility, with my lipstick applied perfectly and my Crazy only being pulled out when their life needs a little spice.

They don't want me dirty, having not left my bed for days. Not diseased. Not real.

So they invite me over when they're going through writer's block but don't answer m ~ Lora Mathis
Mental Illness quotes by Lora Mathis
Portray [people with mental illness] sympathetically, and portray them in all the richness and depth of their experience as people, and not as diagnoses. ~ Elyn Saks
Mental Illness quotes by Elyn Saks
In the 1970s, a group of researchers got themselves deliberately confined to mental asylums across United States. They did this by pretending to hear voices. They pretended to hear a voice saying, Empty, Dull and Thud.
But as soon as they were admitted to the wards, they stopped pretending and never mention the voice again.
And here's the mad part
The hospital staff outright refused to believe they were better, and kept them locked up anyway - some of them for months on end -each forced into accepting they had a mental illness, and agreeing to take drugs as a condition of their release. This is what labels do. They stick. ~ Nathan Filer
Mental Illness quotes by Nathan Filer
Certain empty houses that seemed to stare like the faces of people suffering from terrible mental illness. An empty barn on the outskirts of town, the hayloft door swinging open and closed on rusty hinges, first disclosing darkness, then hiding it, then disclosing it again. ~ Stephen King
Mental Illness quotes by Stephen King
I always wondered if I was ever going to be somebody's hero. I realized - I am my own hero. ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
Mental illness is a very powerful thing. If it is with you it is probably going to be there until the day you die. I am trying so hard to break mine, but it is not easy. It is my toughest fight ever. ~ Frank Bruno
Mental Illness quotes by Frank Bruno
I am somebody. I used to think I was invisible because nobody noticed me, but I set fire to my fear. I am free. I am here, and if it's going to be me against the world, then I am ready. After all the shit I've been through, I can handle anything that comes my way. I am not going to ever let anyone make me feel less than a human being - because I matter. ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
The thing about people who are truly and malignantly crazy: their real genius is for making the people around them think they themselves are crazy. In military science this is called Psy-Ops, for your info. ~ David Foster Wallace
Mental Illness quotes by David Foster Wallace
Our culture treats people with depression is as if there is something wrong with them; a biological imbalance best treated with medication. But if it's impossible to understand biology outside the context of environment, and there is a frightening increase in male suicide and depression, perhaps we need to take a closer look at the other variable - our environment. ~ Mike Snelle
Mental Illness quotes by Mike Snelle
Nobody seemed to have any perspective any longer. Those were low points. But we got through it. ~ Uma Thurman
Mental Illness quotes by Uma Thurman
The amount of sympathy you get from having an illness is paid out like a Ponzi scheme and psychiatric disorders are all the way at the bottom. ~ Nenia Campbell
Mental Illness quotes by Nenia Campbell
Food has become a cause of disease rather than a guardian of health in the modern world. Once regarded as the central pillar of life and the most effective of all medicines, food is now a major contributing factor in cancer, heart disease, arthritis , mental illness, and many other pathological conditions. Virtually monopolized by agricultural and industrial cartels, public food supplies, are processed and packaged to produce profits and prolong shelf life, not to promote health and prolong human life. It seems incredible that public health authorities permit the unrestricted use of hydrogenated vegetable oils, refined sugar, chemical preservatives, toxic pesticides, and over 5,000 other artificial food additives that have repeatedly been proven to cause cancer, impair immunity, and otherwise erode human health, while restricting the medical use of nutrients, herbs, acupuncture, fasting, and other traditional therapies that have been shown to prevent and cure the very diseases caused by chemical contaminants in food and water. ~ Daniel Reid
Mental Illness quotes by Daniel Reid
As smart as I am, it took a boy stuck in his house to teach me that sometimes it doesn't matter where you are at all. It only matters whos with you. ~ John Corey Whaley
Mental Illness quotes by John Corey Whaley
It's like each face was a sign like one of those "I'm Blind" signs the dago accordion players in Portland hung around their necks, only these signs say "I'm tired" or "I'm scared" or "I'm dying of a bum liver" or "I'm all bound up with machinery and people pushing me alla time." I can read all the signs, it don't make any difference how little the print gets. ~ Ken Kesey
Mental Illness quotes by Ken Kesey
Here's the hell of it: madness doesn't announce itself. There isn't time to prepare for its coming. It shows up without calling and sits in your kitchen ashing in your plant. You ask how long it plans to stay; it shrugs its shoulders, gets up, and starts digging through the fridge. ~ Marya Hornbacher
Mental Illness quotes by Marya Hornbacher
No healthy mind could bring itself to torture another human being. ~ Lance Conrad
Mental Illness quotes by Lance Conrad
After my first few tastes I was pretty much hooked. I'd have dry spells, months without any or only piddling amounts of grace, but I never forgot about it or stopped wanting it. ~ Mark Vonnegut
Mental Illness quotes by Mark Vonnegut
But pain's like water. It finds a way to push through any seal. There's no way to stop it. Sometimes you have to let yourself sink inside of it before you can learn how to swim to the surface. ~ Katie Kacvinsky
Mental Illness quotes by Katie Kacvinsky
People with mental health problems are almost never dangerous. In fact, they are more likely to be the victims than the perpetrators. At the same time, mental illness has been the common denominator in one act of mass violence after another. ~ Roy Blunt
Mental Illness quotes by Roy Blunt
The acknowledgement of having suffered evil is the greatest step forward in mental health. ~ Stefan Molyneux
Mental Illness quotes by Stefan Molyneux
Your mind is my treasure, and if it were broken, it would be my treasure still ~ Charlotte Bronte
Mental Illness quotes by Charlotte Bronte
Remember, we all have to start from somewhere. You made another step today. ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
This will sound strange, and yet I'm sure it was the point: it was a bit like being high. That, for me, anyway, had always been the attraction of drugs, to stop the brutal round of hypercritical thinking, to escape the ravages of an unoccupied mind cannibalizing itself. ~ Norah Vincent
Mental Illness quotes by Norah Vincent
... nostalgia was once thought to be a mental illness or a physical affliction; for me, it was both. ~ Laura McHugh
Mental Illness quotes by Laura McHugh
What I didn't say was that each time I picked up a German dictionary or a German book, the very sight of those dense, black, barbed-wire letters made my mind shut like a clam. ~ Sylvia Plath
Mental Illness quotes by Sylvia Plath
I am the only one who can create the missing piece of the wing. I have created it, and now - I am whole. ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
The reasons for Emma's illness and for her decision to allow life in, rather than die, are intertwined and involve the beginnings of her feelings of belonging, of safety and of competence to be in the world. ~ Carol Lee
Mental Illness quotes by Carol Lee
It's no good. I've been trying to sleep for the last half-hour, and I can't. Writing here is a sort of drug. It's the only thing I look forward to. This afternoon I read what I wrote ... And it seemed vivid. I know it seems vivid because my imagination fills in all the bits another person wouldn't understand. I mean, it's vanity. But it seems a sort of magic ... And I just can't live in this present. I would go mad if I did ~ John Fowles
Mental Illness quotes by John Fowles
Shortly after I began work with Teresa, I acquired another MPD client, a supposedly schizophrenic young man I will call Tony. He called in to the clinic on a day I was on telephone duty, saying he was having flashbacks of "ritual abuse." I did not yet know what that was. Tony became my client. He could be quite entertaining. I have a vivid memory of him as a three-year-old, "Tiny Tony," standing on his head on my office couch, and running down the hall to try unsuccessfully to make it to the bathroom. He had in his head the entire rock band of Guns'n'Roses, and I got to know Axl, the band leader, quite well. I remember the time Tony was in hospital and I went to visit him; Axl popped out and said, "Remember, we're schizophrenic in here! ~ Alison Miller
Mental Illness quotes by Alison Miller
The idea to go West just fell into my lap from the sky. Go west, young man. That's how the best ideas happen. Just out of nowhere. When you're not even thinking. Like they've been created for you and you just have to reach out and grab them before someone else does. ~ Shannon Mullen
Mental Illness quotes by Shannon Mullen
But you must decide whether you are going to pursue reality and health or to retreat into your fantasies . You have the right to retreat , but do it all the way and take up residency at the state hospital . You will be well cared for there . If you decide for reality , you will have a long fight ahead , but I can assure you that reality is worth the fight . When you make up your mind , let me know . ~ Talitha Day Fair
Mental Illness quotes by Talitha Day Fair
She would like to say, Listen, Dr. Sue, deep down there is a thing inside me, and sometimes it swells up like the head of a squid and shoots blackness through me. I haven't wanted to be this way, but so help me, I have loved my son. ~ Elizabeth Strout
Mental Illness quotes by Elizabeth Strout
Wanting to be on television is a mental illness. Wanting to be president of the United States, wanting to be an actor - these are degrees of the same mental illness. If you need to be approved of simultaneously by more people than are in this room now, there's a problem. ~ Keith Olbermann
Mental Illness quotes by Keith Olbermann
That is where we stand as a nation today. Twenty years ago, our society began regularly prescribing psychiatric drugs to children and adolescents, and now one out of every fifteen Americans enters adulthood with a "serious mental illness." That is proof of the most tragic sort that our drug-based paradigm of care is doing a great deal more harm than good. The medicating of children and youth became commonplace only a short time ago, and already it has put millions onto a path of lifelong illness. (246) ~ Robert Whitaker
Mental Illness quotes by Robert Whitaker
I am not going to put the blame on you. But… guess what? I am still here. ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
Are you crazy? It's a common phrase, I know. But it means something particular to me: the tunnels, the security screens, the plastic forks, the shimmering, ever-shifting borderline that like all boundaries beckons and asks to be crossed. I do not want to cross it again. ~ Susanna Kaysen
Mental Illness quotes by Susanna Kaysen
Did you know PTSD is the only mental illness you can give someone? A person gave it to me. A man actually drove me crazy. He transmitted this condition. Like the man who gave my gay cousin HIV, or like my grandfather, who gave my grandmother the clap. You can "get" schizophrenia or bipolar in the genetic sense. You might inherit genes that predispose you toward hearing voices or intense fluctuation of mood. In that sense, these conditions are "given" to you. But they aren't given to you in the same way watching your father cut off your mother's head on Christmas gives you PTSD. ~ Myriam Gurba
Mental Illness quotes by Myriam Gurba
Then old Pete was on his feet. "I'm tired!" was what he shouted, a strong, angry copper tone to his voice that no one had ever heard before. Everyone hushed. They were somehow ashamed. It was as if he had suddenly said something that was real and true and important and it had put all their childish hollering to shame. ~ Ken Kesey
Mental Illness quotes by Ken Kesey
I love the skin I am in! I love my body and I feel better than I ever felt before! ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
Thoughts are just a different kind of bacteria, colonizing you. ~ John Green
Mental Illness quotes by John Green
Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (October 15, 1844 – August 25, 1900) was a German philosopher. His writing included critiques of religion, morality, contemporary culture, philosophy, and science, using a distinctive style and displaying a fondness for aphorism. Nietzsche's influence remains substantial within and beyond philosophy, notably in existentialism and postmodernism. Nietzsche began his career as a philologist before turning to philosophy. At the age of 24 he became Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Basel, but resigned in 1879 due to health problems, which would plague him for most of his life. In 1889 he exhibited symptoms of a serious mental illness, living out his remaining years in the care of his mother and sister until his death in 1900. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Mental Illness quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
So many people dragged me into the pit of hell with them. What they failed to realize was that I refused to become settled and make it my home. I've walked out of the pit of hell. I can smile. I am happy because I am finally free. ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
Over and over again, the same message, 'you are not enough'. You hear it enough times and it weaves itself into you, and it's not an idea any more it's who you are, 'not enough.' But then a boy comes along and changes the message. 'You are enough,' he says, 'enough for me.' And because he is all you have, being enough for him is enough for you, too, even though you know deep down that 'good enough' really just means 'pretty enough,' and if he really knew you, all of you, he'd bail, too. ~ Lauren Miller
Mental Illness quotes by Lauren Miller
While binge drinking is a significant issue, it is likely that many members of the public would be surprised by its categorisation as a mental illness, particularly at the milder end."

Public confusion caused by differing understandings of the term 'mental illness'.

Mental Illness quotes by Anthony F. Jorm
But nobody writes fairy tales
about the ugly and poems
are not there for the broken
and I will never find myself
in the words of a hymn
nor will any whispered prayer
ever say my name
(which name, which me
am I looking for?)
because I am shouting
at a cross splintered into pieces
by my angry fists, and crying
at the stained glass falling
like killing rain around me. ~ Miriam Joy
Mental Illness quotes by Miriam Joy
I always had a dissociative disorder. But I healed from it over the course of 14 years of big-time therapy. But, you know, I mean, everybody's kind of loony now. So I was kind of a pioneer in the mental illness thing, too. ~ Roseanne Barr
Mental Illness quotes by Roseanne Barr
I wasn't sure if it was safe for me to be sharing time and space with other people, who all seemed so much gentler and safer and less of a secret to themselves than I felt I was. ~ Catherine Lacey
Mental Illness quotes by Catherine Lacey
Want to do something noble and courageous while you're on this Earth treat the mentally ill like they have some worth. ~ Stanley Victor Paskavich
Mental Illness quotes by Stanley Victor Paskavich
You can feel like a mental patient, but that doesn't mean you have to act like one. ~ Marsha M. Linehan
Mental Illness quotes by Marsha M. Linehan
But Hey, Guess What
Crazy means I'm not liable
for my actions. So screw it,
I'll go home, propped up on
Prozac against distractions ~ Ellen Hopkins
Mental Illness quotes by Ellen Hopkins
Am I a mindless fool? My life is a fragment, a disconnected dream that has no continuity. I am so tired of senselessness. I am tired of the music that my feelings sing, the dream music. ~ Ross David Burke
Mental Illness quotes by Ross David Burke
The man reeks of mental illness. I can taste his pathology... Goes well with my palette. ~ Juditta Salem
Mental Illness quotes by Juditta Salem
I AM TRANSFORMING FOR THE BETTER. ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
This is the real work of woman of color feminism: to resist acquiescence to fatality and guilt, to become warriors of conscience and action who resist death in all its myriad manifestations: poverty, cultural assimilation, child abuse, motherless mothering, gentrification, mental illness, welfare cuts, the prison system, racial profiling, immigrant and queer bashing, invasion and imperialism at home and at war.

To fight any kind of war, Kahente Horn-Miller writes. "The Biggest single requirement is fighting spirit." I thought much of this as I read Colonize This! since this collection appears in print at a time of escalating world-wide war--In Colombia, Afghanistan, Palestine. But is there ever a time of no-war for women of color? Is there ever a time when our home (our body, our land of origin) is not subject to violent occupation, violent invasion? If I retain any image to hold the heart-intention of this book, it is found in what Horn-Miller calls the necessity of the war dance. This book is one rite of passage, one ceremony of preparedness on the road to consciousness, on the "the war path of greater empowerment. ~ Bushra Rehman
Mental Illness quotes by Bushra Rehman
People may be constrained in two basic ways: physically, by confining them in jails, mental hospitals, and so forth; and symbolically, by confining them in occupations, social roles, and so forth. Actually, confinement of the second type is more common and pervasive in the day-to-day conduct of society's business; as a rule, only when the symbolic, or socially informal, confinement of conduct fails or proves inadequate, is recourse taken to physical, or socially formal, confinement…. When people perform their social roles properly – in other words, when social expectations are adequately met – their behavior is considered normal. Though obvious, this deserves emphasis: a waiter must wait on tables; a secretary must type; a father must earn a living; a mother must cook and sew and take care of her children. Classic systems of psychiatric nosology had nothing to say about these people, so long as they remained neatly imprisoned in their respective social cells; or, as we say about the Negroes, so long as they "knew their place." But when such persons broke out of "jail" and asserted their liberty, they became of interest to the psychiatrist. ~ Thomas Szasz
Mental Illness quotes by Thomas Szasz
A disruption of the circadian cycle - the metabolic and glandular rhythms that are central to our workaday life - seems to be involved in many, if not most, cases of depression; this is why brutal insomnia so often occurs and is most likely why each day's pattern of distress exhibits fairly predictable alternating periods of intensity and relief. ~ William Styron
Mental Illness quotes by William Styron
I want to show that the dividing lines between sanity and mental illness have been drawn in the wrong place. ~ Anthony Storr
Mental Illness quotes by Anthony Storr
If you put the wrong foods in your body, you are contaminated and dirty and your stomach swells. Then the voice says, Why did you do that? Don't you know better? Ugly and wicked, you are disgusting to me. ~ Bethany Pierce
Mental Illness quotes by Bethany Pierce
There is an element of selfishness to this, I suppose. It feels pretty good to be able to so quickly help someone. That is, after all, one of the great emotional payoffs of medicine. That isn't to say that ECT is either a panacea or without flaws - but when used in the right way for the right purposes it's of great benefit, and condemning it because it isn't perfect would lead to more suffering and harm, no less.

It was one of the most difficult things I have ever done in my life. I have memory problems as a residual of it; however, I'm alive. That was the main point. ~ Kitty Dukakis
Mental Illness quotes by Kitty Dukakis
I think I might be bi-polar. It's not normal to be this emotionally unstable. ~ Michelle N. Onuorah
Mental Illness quotes by Michelle N. Onuorah
Stigmas speak to the idea of difference and how difference shames us and those we know. ~ Michael Lewis
Mental Illness quotes by Michael Lewis
My pillow is as good as any ocean
to drown in the nightmare of myself.
I swam all the way here from the moon. ~ Casey Renee Kiser
Mental Illness quotes by Casey Renee Kiser
Romantic love is mental illness. But it's a pleasurable one. It's a drug. It distorts reality, and that's the point of it. It would be impossible to fall in love with someone that you really saw. ~ Fran Lebowitz
Mental Illness quotes by Fran Lebowitz
If you trade your authenticity for safety, you may experience the following: anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addiction, rage, blame, resentment, and inexplicable grief. ~ Brene Brown
Mental Illness quotes by Brene Brown
I am going to make the good and bad count today. ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
Everyone wanted me to feed them that story - darkness to light, weakness to strength, broken to whole. I wanted it, too. ~ John Green
Mental Illness quotes by John Green
Ivanov: No, my clever young thing, it's not a question of romance. I say as before God that I will endure everything - depression and mental illness and ruin and the loss of my wife and premature old age and loneliness - but I cannot tolerate, cannot endure being ridiculous in my own eyes. I'm dying of shame at the thought that I, a healthy, strong man, have turned into some sort of Hamlet or Manfred, some sort of 'superfluous man' ... devil knows precisely what!
There are pitiful people who are flattered by being called Hamlet or superfluous men, but for me it's a disgrace! It stirs up my pride, I'm overcome by shame and I suffer ... ~ Anton Chekhov
Mental Illness quotes by Anton Chekhov
If you have a monster inside of you, please teach it how to jump, and laugh, and fly and catch fish! Please teach it to climb mountains to watch sunsets and wade in ponds to feel moonlight. Please love your monster, tell it that it has a home, teach it that it has a place in this world, maybe it likes ice cream, maybe marshmallows make it smile, maybe it goes to beautiful places in its dreams at night. One day it will sit atop a clocktower and cast sunbeams onto everyone! Because it will learn that! Because angels are too busy to do that, but monsters are not. Monsters would love to catch sunbeams and eat sugar donuts. Teach your monsters, they will form moonbeams one day! ~ C. JoyBell C.
Mental Illness quotes by C. JoyBell C.
Long ago they lowered insane persons into snake pits; they thought that an experience that might drive a sane person out of his wits might send an insane person back to sanity. ~ Mary Jane Ward
Mental Illness quotes by Mary Jane Ward
Women should know the truth. They can take it; they are adults, not children. If a mother opts for formula rather than breastfeeding, there is good evidence that her baby will score lower on IQ tests and will have a higher risk of many illnesses including some cancers, diabetes, respiratory illnesses, diarrhea and ear infections. She should know that her own risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer will be higher, as well as her daughter's risk of breast cancer. The mother increases her own risk of diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and becoming overweight by "choosing" formula feeding. There is accumulating evidence that the risk of mental illness (alcoholism, ADHD, schizophrenia) is increased by not breastfeeding. A recent study suggested that even behaviour problems in adolescents are more likely if the child was formula fed. The longer the child is breastfed, the lower the risk both for the child and the mother. ~ Jack Newman
Mental Illness quotes by Jack Newman
I was the outsider in Fernhall House, but they were all outsiders really. Outside society. Outside time. You hear people say that those in asylums and care facilities are out of their minds. But in truth their minds are often the one thing they are not out of. Their whole being is sheltering behind walls of muscle and bone. Everything they are - and are not - exists within their sacrosanct headspace. ~ Jonathan Lee
Mental Illness quotes by Jonathan Lee
My story is not a sad story; it's a real one. It's a story about a girl who fought through a storm she thought would never end. ~ Hannah Blum
Mental Illness quotes by Hannah Blum
Our "increasing mental sickness" may find expression in neurotic symptoms. These symptoms are conspicuous and extremely distressing. But "let us beware," says Dr. Fromm, "of defining mental hygiene as the prevention of symptoms. Symptoms as such are not our enemy, but our friend; where there are symptoms there is conflict, and conflict always indicates that the forces of life which strive for integration and happiness are still fighting." The really hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. "Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives, that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does." They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relation to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to that abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they were fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted, still cherish "the illusion of individuality," but in fact they have been to a great extent deindividualized. Their conformity is developing into something like uniformity. But "uniformity and freedom are incompatible. Uniformity and mental health are incompatible too. . . . Man is not made to be an automaton, and if he becom ~ Aldous Huxley
Mental Illness quotes by Aldous Huxley
Having a mental illness is like a roller coaster ride. You don't jump off when it's still moving. You have to continue to ride until it comes to a complete stop and you can get off safely. ~ Stephanie Anne Allen
Mental Illness quotes by Stephanie Anne Allen
I do not crave anyone that will fix me. Just someone who will hold my hand while I fix myself. ~ Unknown
Mental Illness quotes by Unknown

Mental Illness quotes by Rodney Richards

Mental Illness quotes by Jerold J. Kreisman
yet still I crave the sight of my own hypnotic gaze reflecting out at me from the shared mirror of anorexia and bulimia, number to life and reality, existing only in my self-made tortured state ~ Carol Lee
Mental Illness quotes by Carol Lee
The scariest thing of all is never knowing what you're suddenly going to believe. ~ Neal Shusterman
Mental Illness quotes by Neal Shusterman
Love is mental illness going in and mental illness coming out. In between, you do a lot of laundry. ~ Steve Lopez
Mental Illness quotes by Steve Lopez
I am, emphatically. Mental illness triggered by xperimental error. ~ David Mitchell

She's dressed in a white her soul doesn't reflect, a drop-dead beauty with drop-dead morals. ~ Halo Scot
Mental Illness quotes by Halo Scot
We share in the certainty that people labeled with mental illness are first and above all, human beings. Our lives are precious and are of infinite value. ~ Patricia Deegan
Mental Illness quotes by Patricia Deegan
A significant number of people diagnosed with mental illness have psychic abilities not yet under control. They may have true mental illness as well, including faulty neurological wiring and chemical imbalance. However, some people have mental breaks because of psychic abilities they don't know how to handle. ~ Shepherd Hoodwin
Mental Illness quotes by Shepherd Hoodwin
You want to be there for me but an anxiety attack is a solitary activity. ~ R. YS Perez
Mental Illness quotes by R. YS Perez
I am grateful to be alive. I am grateful for being able to smile again. ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Illness quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
To be ill adjusted to a deranged world is not a breakdown. ~ Jeanette Winterson
Mental Illness quotes by Jeanette Winterson
i was once swallowed in a dark shroud
of fear, pain, and self-loathing
which i believed i couldn't voice
because if i spoke of my loneliness
would it not prove my uselessness?
light could not break the shadows
