What to say? That I would have loved to make the trip but was busy staying out of the mental hospital? It's so humiliating - so degrading. If I knew I wouldn't get caught, I'd love to lie about it - invent an acceptable cancer, that recurs and vanishes, that people could understand - that wouldn't make them frightened and uncomfortable. ~ Andrew Solomon
Mental Hospital quotes by Andrew Solomon
She needed a break." "A break? She needed a break? What does that mean?" "You know what that means, Charlie." "I do?" Charlie thought a moment, then rolled her eyes. "Oh, come on! Again?""You know how she is. But hey! At least she's still in Switzerland. We'll get there in no time." "But it's a mental hospital! Not a resort!""To her, all mental hospitals are resorts. Besides, it could be worse," Max said happily. "This could all be so much worse!" Charlie shook her head . "Dude, I seriously don't know how. ~ Shelly Laurenston
Mental Hospital quotes by Shelly Laurenston
To acknowledge the need of a new world-view would undermine the whole of their activity, and not many thinkers were willing to pay that price. Particularly not in a society where social exclusion meant rapid transportation to the proudest invention of the humanist sciences: the mental hospital. ~ Alexander Bard
Mental Hospital quotes by Alexander Bard
It's an unfortunate word, 'depression', because the illness has nothing to do with feeling sad, sadness is on the human palette. Depression is a whole other beast. It's when your old personality has left town and been replaced by a block of cement with black tar oozing through your veins and mind. This is when you can't decide whether to get a manicure or jump off a cliff. It's all the same. When I was institutionalised I sat on a chair unable to move for three months, frozen in fear. To take a shower was inconceivable. What made it tolerable was while I was inside, I found my tribe - my people. They understood and unlike those who don't suffer, never get bored of you asking if it will ever go away? They can talk medication all hours, day and night; heaven to my ears. ~ Ruby Wax
Mental Hospital quotes by Ruby Wax
My mum is in a mental hospital. There's a fine line between genius and insanity. Winston Churchill, Mozart, John Lennon. These people all had a touch of crazy that fuelled their brilliance. They were not locked up for it like my mum. Pft. Then again, Winston Churchill never tried to kill my dad. ~ Christopher Titus
Mental Hospital quotes by Christopher Titus
I tried to kill myself. It was a feeble attempt, but I did. And I got put in a mental hospital for a month, and I got myself straight and worked on my mental health ... it's nothing that I hide. It's nothing to be proud of or to be ashamed of. It's part of my life, you know? And I'm still here! ~ Audra McDonald
Mental Hospital quotes by Audra McDonald
This was bad. This was toss-Emma-back-into-the-mental-hospital-bad. ~ Lee Nichols
Mental Hospital quotes by Lee Nichols
I don't like the term 'mental illness.' I'd rather just say 'mad.' Just like I always say 'loony bin,' not 'mental hospital.' ~ John Burnside
Mental Hospital quotes by John Burnside
What was Mom's big crime, anyway?" I screamed. "That she had an assistant in India doing errands for her? What's Samantha 2? It's just something so people can sit around and have a robot do all their shit for them. You spent ten years of your life and billions of dollars inventing something so people don't have to live their own lives. Mom found a way of doing it for seventy-five cents an hour, and you tried to have her committed to a mental hospital! ~ Maria Semple
Mental Hospital quotes by Maria Semple
Modern elevators are strange and complex entities. The ancient electric winch and "maximum-capacity-eight-persons" jobs bear as much relation to a Sirius Cybernetics Corporation Happy Vertical People Transporter as a packet of mixed nuts does to the entire west wing of the Sirian State Mental Hospital.
This is because they operate on the curious principle of "defocused temporal perception." In other words they have the capacity to see dimly into the immediate future, which enables the elevator to be on the right floor to pick you up even before you knew you wanted it, thus eliminating all the tedious chatting, relaxing and making friends that people were previously forced to do while waiting for elevators.
Not unnaturally, many elevators imbued with intelligence and precognition became terribly frustrated with the mindless business of going up and down, up and down, experimented briefly with the notion of going sideways, as a sort of existential protest, demanded participation in the decision-making process and finally took to squatting in basements sulking.
An impoverished hitchhiker visiting any planets in the Sirius star system these days can pick up easy money working as a counselor for neurotic elevators. ~ Douglas Adams
Mental Hospital quotes by Douglas Adams
Over the last 30 odd years, Democrats have moved to the right and the right has moved into the mental hospital. So what we have is one perfectly good party for hedge fund managers, credit card companies, banks, defense contractors, big agriculture and the pharmaceutical lobby ... That's the Democrats. And they sit across the aisle from a small group of religious lunatics, flat-earthers and civil war re-enactors who mostly communicate by AM radio and call themselves the Republicans and who actually worry that Obama is a socialist. Socialist? He's not even a liberal. ~ Bill Maher
Mental Hospital quotes by Bill Maher
I have a chemical imbalance that, in its most extreme state, will lead me to a mental hospital. ~ Carrie Fisher
Mental Hospital quotes by Carrie Fisher
"if you can't adapt yourself to living in a mental hospital how do you expect to be able to live 'out in the world'?" How indeed? ~ Janet Frame
Mental Hospital quotes by Janet Frame
I was once thrown out of a mental hospital for depressing the other patients. ~ Oscar Levant
Mental Hospital quotes by Oscar Levant
What's the first image that comes to mind when you think of a mental hospital? Jack Nicholson in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,' right? We need to change that perception, and places like this one are doing that. ~ Deborah Norville
Mental Hospital quotes by Deborah Norville
Jail has become the biggest mental health hospital. ~ Steven Magee
Mental Hospital quotes by Steven Magee
Granted: I AM an inmate of a mental hospital; my keeper is watching me, he never lets me out of his sight; there's a peep-hole in the door, and my keeper's eye is the shade of brown that can never see through a blue-eyed type like me. ~ Gunter Grass
Mental Hospital quotes by Gunter Grass
My parents walked around me on tiptoe, afraid of hurting me. But I knew how disappointed they were. All of a sudden the daughter they had been so proud of was a returnee from a mental hospital. ~ Haruki Murakami
Mental Hospital quotes by Haruki Murakami
Jail was preferable. There they only limited you physically. In a mental ward they tampered with your soul and worldview and mind. ~ John Kennedy Toole
Mental Hospital quotes by John Kennedy Toole
My mother's mouth drops. 'Emmy...don't say those things Emmy. Remember, we don't talk about those things.'

'Yes Mom. I remember. That's why I'm here, looking like this.'

An orderly knocks on the door and announces that visiting time is over.

My mother and I look at each other awkwardly, and hug.

'I love you,' she says.

'I love you too, Mom.'

'You aren't telling them too much are you?' she asks, afraid.

I sign. 'No Mommy, I'm not.'

She's visibly relieved. She leaves the room.

The orderley comes back and escorts me back into the main room.

I just sit and laugh to myself."

(after Emmy's suicide attempt) ~ The Finer Points of Becoming Machine ~ Emily Andrews
Mental Hospital quotes by Emily Andrews
A lot of times I feel I probably would have ended up in a mental hospital if it weren't for the structure that 'Bones' gave me. ~ Eric Millegan
Mental Hospital quotes by Eric Millegan
He had been diagnosed as suffering from atypical schizophrenia. Lord, how he hated that awful-sounding label. It conjured up visions of some deranged maniac escaped from a secure mental hospital. ~ Etienne De L'Amour
Mental Hospital quotes by Etienne De L'Amour
I have, since the age of about 2, been a twitchy bundle of phobias, fears, and neuroses. And I have, since the age of 10, when I was first taken to a mental hospital for evaluation and then referred to a psychiatrist for treatment, tried in various ways to overcome my anxiety. ~ Scott Stossel
Mental Hospital quotes by Scott Stossel
I'm probably the only person on earth who had to be committed to a mental hospital to find a date. ~ Julie Halpern
Mental Hospital quotes by Julie Halpern
It had been a long while since I'd watched any television, and things had only gotten weirder. Beauty pageants for infants; ruddy men in trucker caps fighting over abandoned storage lockers; public shamings of compulsive hoarders and pre-diabetics; affluent suburban women made up like transvestite hookers, competing with each other in feats of coarseness and cruelty; barely literate pregnant teens with tattoos, unfocused eyes, and futures like wrecked cars; apoplectic crypto-fascists spitting bile and paranoia; a carnival midway of weight loss devices, hair growth creams, erectile dysfunction potions, and pottery from which herbs grew like green hair. It was like the day room of a surrealist mental hospital, or any big city ER on a summer Saturday night. ~ Peter Spiegelman
Mental Hospital quotes by Peter Spiegelman
He said that I have to remember that even though I've changed a lot in here, I'm going back to a world that hasn't changed ~ Michael Thomas Ford
Mental Hospital quotes by Michael Thomas Ford
Pretty soon, the only doubt in my mind was the precise time and method of committing suicide. The only alternative I could see was an eternity of hell for the rest of my life in a mental hospital, and I was going to use my last ounce of free choice and choose a quick clean ending. ~ Sylvia Plath
Mental Hospital quotes by Sylvia Plath
I'm the creepy girl. In a mental hospital."
He grinned. "Nobody's perfect. ~ Michelle Hodkin
Mental Hospital quotes by Michelle Hodkin
I was shocked and terrified to hear Dr. Summer say I had what was formerly known as multiple personality disorder. Is that like Sybil? Am I like the woman in The Three Faces of Eve? My head began to spin. What do I have inside of me? Is there a crazy person in there? What am I? I felt like a freak. I was afraid to have anyone know. I have a mental illness. People make fun of people like me. Upon hearing my diagnosis, I stopped thinking of myself as smart, creative, or clever. Even though Dr. Summer had worked hard to help me understand that I had developed an amazingly adaptive survival technique, I no longer thought of it that way at all.

I was overwhelmed by fear and shame. The words multiple personality disorder echoed in my mind. I thought of all the ways people with multiple personalities were ridiculed and marginalized: They're locked away in mental institutions. They are really sick. I'm not going to be the subject of people's jokes. I am a lawyer. I work at the U.S. Department of Justice. The more I thought about it, the deeper my despair grew. ~ Olga Trujillo
Mental Hospital quotes by Olga Trujillo
I am glad you like what I said of Mrs. Elizabeth Fry (prison and mental hospital reformer). She is very unpopular with the clergy; examples of living, active virtue disturb our repose and give one to distressing comparisons; we long to burn her alive. ~ Sydney Smith
Mental Hospital quotes by Sydney Smith
"I'm not going anywhere. I'm joining your little gang of baby heroes on the quest to find Superdad."
Simon and Derek exchanged a look.
"No," Derek said.
"No? Excuse me, it was Rae who betrayed you guys. Not me. I helped Chloe."
"And was it Rae who tormented her at Lyle House?"
"Tormented?" A derisive snort. "I didn't - "
"You did everything you could to get Chloe kicked out," Simon said. "And when that didn't work, you tried to kill her."
"Kill her?" Tori's mouth hardened. "I'm not my mother. Don't you dare accuse - "
"You lured her into the crawl space," Derek said. "Hit her over the head with a brick, bound and gagged her, and locked her in. Did you even check to make sure she was okay? That you hadn't cracked her skull?"
Tori sputtered a protest, but from the horror in her eyes, I knew the possibility hadn't occurred to her.
"Derek," I said, "I don't think - "
"No she didn't think. She could have killed you with the brick, suffocated you with the gag, given you a heart attack from fright, not to mention what would have happened if you hadn't gotten out of your bindings. It only takes a couple of days to die from dehydration."
"I would never have left Chloe to die. You can't accuse me of that."
"No," Derek said. "Just of wanting hr locked up in a mental hospital. And why? Because you didn't like her. Because she talked to a guy you did like. Maybe you're not your mother, Tori. But what you ar ~ Kelley Armstrong
Mental Hospital quotes by Kelley Armstrong
It was rare for a patient to readjust successfully to normal life after a period spent in a mental hospital. ~ Paulo Coelho
Mental Hospital quotes by Paulo Coelho
The cruelty intrinsic to the workhouse system was excused by the need to discourage idleness, much as the malice intrinsic to the mental hospital system has been excused by the need to provide treatment. ~ Thomas Szasz
Mental Hospital quotes by Thomas Szasz
What mental hospital have you escaped from?" She wanted to laugh, but he looked so serious. "Prove you're an alien. Rip off your disguise. Show me your antennae. Where's your union card? ~ Cheryl Sterling
Mental Hospital quotes by Cheryl Sterling
He'll have to do without me, Jamie thought, not looking back. And then clearly, as if he'd been told, he knew Grenville /could/ do without him. There was somewhere else he had to go now, somewhere else he had to be. ~ S.E. Hinton
Mental Hospital quotes by S.E. Hinton
As Stephen Jay Gould pointed out in Time, in no other Western country is the teaching of Evolution regarded as controversial. Throughout the world, one way or another, most Christian denominations have managed to reconcile belief in God with belief in the mechanisms of natural selection. A French or German or Scandinavian politician who called for students to entertain as a reasonable deduction from existing evidence the proposition that Earth is at most 10,000 years old would be bundled off to a mental hospital. ~ Katha Pollitt
Mental Hospital quotes by Katha Pollitt
I couldn't help but think, This car is taking me to a mental hospital and my mother is treating it like open-mic night at a Greenwich Village café. ~ Augusten Burroughs
Mental Hospital quotes by Augusten Burroughs
What more shall I say: born under light bulbs, deliberately stopped growing at age of three, given drum, sang glass to pieces, smelled vanilla, coughed in churches, observed ants, decided to grow, buried drum, emigrated to the West, lost the East, learned stonecutter's trade, worked as model, started drumming again, visited concrete, made money, kept finger, gave finger away, fled laughing, rode up escalator, arrested, convicted, sent to mental hospital, soon to be acquitted, celebrating this day my thirtieth birthday and still afraid of the Black Witch. Chapter 46, pg. 587 ~ Gunter Grass
Mental Hospital quotes by Gunter Grass
Did you ever hear the story of the man who walks past the mental hospital?" he said. "He can hear all the patients inside shouting, 'Thirteen! Thirteen! Thirteen!,' but the fence is too high for him to see what is going on. Then he spots a knothole in one of the planks. He looks through it, and bam - a stick pokes him in the eye, and he hears the inmates all shouting, 'Fourteen! Fourteen! Fourteen!'" He took a sip of his cocoa. "I mind my own business, Detectives. ~ James Patterson
Mental Hospital quotes by James Patterson
She was in a mental hospital, and so, she could allow herself to feel things that people usually hide. We are all brought up only to love, to accept, to look for ways around things, to avoid conflict. ~ Paulo Coelho
Mental Hospital quotes by Paulo Coelho
Why the long face? Something happen?"
"Nothing except my grandmother is still dead and my aunt moved to Sacramento and my sister just got out of a mental hospital."
"Oh," Huey says.
I spread my sack out, ready to load. Huey folds his handkerchief in half then in half again. I need him to check my count before I can go.
"Which part of Sacramento," he says, and I shrug. ~ Bob Thurber
Mental Hospital quotes by Bob Thurber
I liked the idea that if something horrible was happening to one of the characters in the mental hospital, no one would believe them. The staff would just chalk it up to them being crazy. So it gives me a lot to work with. ~ Michael Rasmussen
Mental Hospital quotes by Michael Rasmussen
The rest of the place was so dilapidated-but-trying that some of its offices and classrooms were still housed in old buildings abandoned by the neighboring State Mental Hospital, unfit for the mentally challenged but perfetly fine for "educating" the parated of probably-ought-to-major-in-business willfully ignorant know-nothings that rotated in and out of its former cells for a couple of months each semester before dropping out. ~ Mark Panek
Mental Hospital quotes by Mark Panek
On the ward there was hurt and pain so big and so deep that speech could not express it. I had been interested in philosophy, and suddenly philosophy came alive for me, for here the basic questions of human existence were not abstractions: they were embodied in human suffering ~ Frank X. Barron
Mental Hospital quotes by Frank X. Barron
These people locked themselves up in a mental hospital and set about saving the world without actually taking any risks because they knew that, outside, they would be thought ridiculous, even if some of their ideas were very practical. ~ Paulo Coelho
Mental Hospital quotes by Paulo Coelho
No, it didn't hurt. He didn't want to lose any black hair, and he was careful to pull out the white hairs one by one. But when he had finished, the skin was drawn and shriveled. It hurt when you ran your hand over it, the doctor said. It didn't bleed, but it was raw and red. Finally he was put in a mental hospital ... He didn't want to be old, he wanted to be young again. No one seems to know whether he started pulling it out because he had lost his mind, or he lost his mind because he pulled out too much. ~ Yasunari Kawabata
Mental Hospital quotes by Yasunari Kawabata
A little girl of seventeen in a mental hospital told me she was terrified because the Atom Bomb was inside her. That is a delusion. The statesmen of the world who boast and threaten that they have Doomsday weapons are far more dangerous, and far more estranged from 'reality' than many of the people on whom the label 'psychotic' is fixed. ~ R.D. Laing
Mental Hospital quotes by R.D. Laing
…I love you," he said to her, although at that point he was certain she could no longer comprehend the words. "I'd trade places with you in an instant, Mandy Valems… you never deserved this… why would anyone do something so terrible!?" A cold chill froze his heart when he saw her empty eyes again.

The fluorescent lights in the dim room sparked to life all of a sudden, brightness so sharp that it startled him. In a flash, sharp and sudden, quicker than a lightning strike, the bulbs flickered and exploded with a few jingling pops. ~ Rebecca McNutt
Mental Hospital quotes by Rebecca McNutt
You can't write a story about a mental hospital in the United States without facing the grand example of 'Cuckoo's Nest.' ~ Victor LaValle
Mental Hospital quotes by Victor LaValle
Leaning her silly, beautiful, drunken head on my shoulder, she said, "Oh, Esther, I don't want to be a feminist. I don't enjoy it. It's no fun."
"I know," I said. "I don't either." People think you decide to be a "radical," for God's sake, like deciding to be a librarian or a ship's chandler. You "make up your mind," you "commit yourself" (sounds like a mental hospital, doesn't it?).
I said Don't worry, we could be buried together and have engraved on our tombstone the awful truth, which some day somebody will understand:
WE WUZ PUSHED. ~ Joanna Russ
Mental Hospital quotes by Joanna Russ
You don't have to work in a mental hospital to know about husbands and wives. ~ Philip Roth
Mental Hospital quotes by Philip Roth
Here I want to stress that perception of losing one's mind is based on culturally derived and socially ingrained stereotypes as to the significance of symptoms such as hearing voices, losing temporal and spatial orientation, and sensing that one is being followed, and that many of the most spectacular and convincing of these symptoms in some instances psychiatrically signify merely a temporary emotional upset in a stressful situation, however terrifying to the person at the time. Similarly, the anxiety consequent upon this perception of oneself, and the strategies devised to reduce this anxiety, are not a product of abnormal psychology, but would be exhibited by any person socialized into our culture who came to conceive of himself as someone losing his mind. ~ Erving Goffman
Mental Hospital quotes by Erving Goffman
Get Well Soon. People sent me get well soon cards while I was in a mental hospital. There were fluffy little bunnies, floaty rainbows, and even a religious card. I could understand that Hallmark probably doesn't make "Get Sane Soon" cards, but still. Was I not well before? Am I well now? Who decides? ~ Julie Halpern
Mental Hospital quotes by Julie Halpern
So the question now is: Why does the mind think in terms of habit, the habit of relationship, the habit of ideas, the habit of beliefs, and so on? Why? Because essentially it is seeking to be secure, to be safe, to be permanent, is it not? The mind hates to be uncertain, so it must have habits as a means of security. A mind that is secure can never be free from habit, but only the mind that is completely insecure
which doesn't mean ending up in an asylum or a mental hospital.
The mind that is completely insecure, that is uncertain, inquiring, perpetually finding out, that is dying to every experience, to everything it has acquired, and is therefore in a state of not-knowing
only such a mind can be free of habit, and that is the highest form of thinking. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
Mental Hospital quotes by Jiddu Krishnamurti
hated to do it, but if I was going to over come this psychotic episode, I would have to check myself into the mental hospital until I got better. After ~ Mz. Lady P
Mental Hospital quotes by Mz. Lady P
It goes so fast, he thought, they don't tell you that, how fast it goes ... ~ S.E. Hinton
Mental Hospital quotes by S.E. Hinton
Potentially the seed has a mighty tree within it. The four aspects of our nature (the physical, the mental, the emotional and the spiritual) are like seeds. They have the potential to grow into powerful gifts. ~ Judie Bopp
Mental Hospital quotes by Judie Bopp
The USDHEW calculates that 7% of all patients suffer compensable injuries while hospitalized ... One out of every five patients admitted to a typical research hospital acquires an iatrogenic (Caused by the treatment process) disease, one case in thirty leading to death. Half of these episodes result from complications of drug therapy; amazingly, one in ten come from diagnostic procedures. ~ Ivan Illich
Mental Hospital quotes by Ivan Illich
Sharon dropped to her knees and reached her hand over the edge. The gesture was supposed to be a sign of support. But she realized then that it was useless. His insanity was like the stream beneath the ground. It only flowed in one direction, into deeper and deeper darkness. She was going to lose him. ~ Christopher Pike
Mental Hospital quotes by Christopher Pike
Playing sick. That is so hard to do. It has to be a total mental challenge, as well as the physical challenge. ~ Michael Jordan
Mental Hospital quotes by Michael Jordan
Pictures help you to form the mental mold. ~ Robert Collier
Mental Hospital quotes by Robert Collier
We should realize that our deadliest enemies are anger and other delusions. Since these delusions are deeply ingrained mental habits, working to overcome them is not always easy. ~ Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
Mental Hospital quotes by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
Do not allow yourself to be pulled into the role of embracing victimship as some sort of badge of honor to wear or flash around at any opportunity. ~ Stephen Richards
Mental Hospital quotes by Stephen Richards
Now it occurred to him the changes of mental state that might be important were just such minor things as this abnormal irritability. Not so dramatic as visions and fevers, maybe. But important. An attitude of carelessness, or annoyance, clouded your judgment, and that was not a good thing in the woods. ~ Don Berry
Mental Hospital quotes by Don Berry
Alternatively you can twist the cylinder round twice clockwise; that turns it into a hand grenade. Five-second fuse. I tested it on one of my assistants. Poor old Bennett ... he should be out of hospital in a couple of months. ~ Anthony Horowitz
Mental Hospital quotes by Anthony Horowitz
A mental image gives you a framework upon which to work. It is like the drawing of the architect, or the map of the explorer. Think over this for a few moments until you get the idea firmly fixed in your mind. ~ William Walker Atkinson
Mental Hospital quotes by William Walker Atkinson
He hated hospitals, hated them. The stench of Domestos and death seemed to linger in his nostrils and on his clothes for weeks, as if to remind him of something bad. It was even rare to find a tasty nurse these days. Most of the ones he'd seen this afternoon had been as ugly as sin. ~ Dougie Brimson
Mental Hospital quotes by Dougie Brimson
Being known. This, of course, is the goal, the agenda so carefully hidden it may be unknown even to the self. The cutter cuts to make the pain at her center visible. The anorexic starves to make manifest her hunger and vulnerability. The extremes announce, This is who I am, this is what I feel, this is what happens when I don't get what I need. In quadraphonic sound, they give voice to the most central human hunger, which is the desire to be recognized, to be known and loved because of, and in spite of, who you are; they give voice to the sorrow that takes root when that hunger is unsatisfied. ~ Caroline Knapp
Mental Hospital quotes by Caroline Knapp
It's the thing I struggle with every day: the mental diligence and stamina needed to sit in front of the computer, open the file, start writing and to keep doing so, word after word, until I've created the next story. A combination of learning disability and chronic health issues make that the hardest thing for me. ~ Nalo Hopkinson
Mental Hospital quotes by Nalo Hopkinson
In the past he had been unable to see the great, teh unfathomable, the infinite, in anything. He had only felt that it must exist somewhere and had been seeking it. In everything near and comprehensible he had seen only what was limited, petty, commonplace, and meaningless. He had equipped himself with a mental telescope and gazed into the distance where the distance had seemed to him great and infinite only because they were not clearly visible. Such had Europan life, politics, Masonry, philosophy, and philanthropy seemed to him. Bet even then, at moments of weakness as he had accounted them, his mind had penetrated that distance too, and he had seen there the same triviality, worldliness, and absurdity.
Now, however, he had learned to see the great, the eternal, the infinite in everything, and therefore, in order to look at it, to enjoy his contemplation of it, he naturally discarded teh telescope through which he had till then been gazing over the heads of men, and joyfully surveyed the ever-changeing, eternally great, unfathomable, and infinite life around him. And the closer he looked, the happier and more seren he was. The awful question: What for? a simple answer was now always ready in his soul: Because there is a God, that God without whose will not one hair of a man's head falls. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Mental Hospital quotes by Leo Tolstoy
What's a triumph is that you woke up this morning and decided to live. That's a triumph. ~ Ned Vizzini
Mental Hospital quotes by Ned Vizzini
The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lie will now be accepted as truth, and truth be defamed as lie, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world - and the category of truth versus falsehood is among the mental means to this end - is being destroyed. ~ Hannah Arendt
Mental Hospital quotes by Hannah Arendt
Mental rehab is way tougher than the physical part ... [You think] I'm tired of doing the same thing [exercising] all day. It's tough, but you've got to overcome it. ~ Will Poole
Mental Hospital quotes by Will Poole
You say I resemble a flower; I partly agree; My brain is governed by black petals of burnt daisies ~ Anne Sexton
Mental Hospital quotes by Anne Sexton
Guard your heart, mind and time. Those three things will determine the health of everything else in your life. ~ Andrena Sawyer
Mental Hospital quotes by Andrena Sawyer
After four or five months of reading Hemingway, I decided to write a story. I had in the past written stories for English classes. These had all been about white people, because white people's stories seemed to matter more. Also, I hadn't known how to write about Indians. How would I translate the various family relations, the difference between an uncle who is a father's brother and an uncle who is a mother's brother? Having read Hemingway, I knew that I should just push all the exotic things to the side as if they didn't matter, that this was how one used exoticism - by not bothering to explain.

The first story I wrote was about my brother coughing. I woke one night to the sound of Birju coughing downstairs and then could not go back to sleep. To be woken this way and not be able to return to sleep struck me as sad enough to merit a reader's attention. Also, Hemingway had written a story about a man being woken because somebody is dying nearby, and the man is forced to witness the death.

I got up from my bed and turned on the light. I then returned to bed with a spiral-bound notebook and placed it against my knees. I began my story in the middle of the action the way Hemingway did. I wrote:

The coughing wakes me. My wife coughs and coughs, and then when her throat is clear, she moans. The nurse's aide moves back and forth downstairs. The hospital bed jingles.

I wrote that it was a spouse coughing because that seemed something a re ~ Akhil Sharma
Mental Hospital quotes by Akhil Sharma
The amount of sympathy you get from having an illness is paid out like a Ponzi scheme and psychiatric disorders are all the way at the bottom. ~ Nenia Campbell
Mental Hospital quotes by Nenia Campbell
He'd seen that the young ones died quickly. He'd heard the staff talk about it. When they were ready they let go. Not like adults. Adults took a long time. It was as if adults had built such a thick, petrified husk around them that this alone gave them the strength, the form to hold on. And by the transient revival that so often came to the dying, adults seemed to find a last little puff of life before the end. They had a term for it here at the hospital -- hui guang fan zhao, the reflected rays of the setting sun. Children were lacking in this. They went quickly. He watched as the DOWN light came on and the elevator door slid open.

He had a fear that his life now was just an interlude of hui guang fan zhao, a brief moment before it all came back, worse. And for so long now he had been in this state by himself. He stared up at the digital floor numbers flashing, descending. ~ Nicole Mones
Mental Hospital quotes by Nicole Mones
After changing shape several times, the ball eventually turned into a huge face. It floated alongside the air-car. This time, time instead of sending him a mental message, the face spoke out aloud and the whole air-car vibrated with its intensity. "If you are foolish enough to renege on your contract, you will be severely punished. For your sake, I hope you wouldn't do such a thing." When Tarmy made no attempt to respond, the face turned and pressed itself against the millipede-free window. A moment later, Tarmy felt the fat slug entering his mind, the sign that the face was attempting to use its powers to obtain his response by other means. But as the slug dug deeper, Samantha's cover stories began springing out of the corners of his mind. Instead of obtaining Tarmy's agreement, all that the face saw was a burning army transporter surrounded by bodies. Undeterred, the face continued its assault. Samantha had anticipated that Tarmy might come up against an adept, so the mental images of death and destruction flowed unchecked. After failing to break Tarmy's defences, the face removed the slug and tried reason. "You can't win, Mr Tarleton, so why don't you do yourself a favour and cooperate? It will be better for you in the long run. Now, where is the miniature pulse drive engine?" Tarmy realised why the millipedes hadn't been allowed to attack. It was obvious that the Great Ones were hoping to retrieve the engine. When Tarmy didn't respond, the face said, "I am prepared to ove ~ Andrew R. Williams
Mental Hospital quotes by Andrew R. Williams
I shook my head. "Um, the Bagmen are directing us. I think Sol is using them to help us."

Aric did a double take.

"Jaysus! The Empress has gone mental. As can happen when you're diddlin' Death. ~ Kresley Cole
Mental Hospital quotes by Kresley Cole
It's 90% mental. The other half is physical ~ Yogi Berra
Mental Hospital quotes by Yogi Berra
Our supreme duty is to advance toward freedom-physical, mental, and spiritual-and help others to do so. ~ Swami Vivekananda
Mental Hospital quotes by Swami Vivekananda
A mental disease has swept the planet: banalization the state of affairs, arising out of a struggle against poverty, has overshot its ultimate goal-the liberation of man from material cares-and has become an obsessive image hanging over the present. Offered the choice of love or a garbage disposal, young people of all countries have chosen the garbage disposal. ~ Ivan Chtcheglov
Mental Hospital quotes by Ivan Chtcheglov
Discussion without asperity, sympathy with fusion, gayety unracked by too abundant jests, mental ease in approaching one another; these are the things which give a pleasant smoothness to the rough edge of life. ~ Agnes Repplier
Mental Hospital quotes by Agnes Repplier
When you speak of my insanity, please let it be with the beauty only art knows. Let it bleed till it becomes creativity and maybe, just maybe, for that single moment my soul will finally be adorned in its own skin. ~ P.H. Wilson
Mental Hospital quotes by P.H. Wilson
He had an exercise bike put next to his bed. He got out of bed in the hospital every morning and exercised, even as he was literally dying. One day he turned to me, and he wasn't a religious guy, but he turned to me and said, "You know if there's a heaven after this, it's a bonus.""
– Hota Kotb (author) Quote by Ron Clifford in Ten Years Later ~ Hoda Kotb
Mental Hospital quotes by Hoda Kotb
Good science requires distinguishing between "felt knowledge" and knowledge arising out of testable observations. "I am sure" is a mental sensation, not a testable conclusion. Put hunches, gut feelings, and intuitions into the suggestion box. Let empiric methods shake out the good from bad suggestions. ~ Robert A. Burton
Mental Hospital quotes by Robert A. Burton
In a country which had accepted caste distinctions for many centuries, inequality had become an inborn mental concept. ~ Khushwant Singh
Mental Hospital quotes by Khushwant Singh
Not that I wish by any means to deny, that the mental life of individuals and peoples is also in conformity with law, as is the object of philosophical, philological, historical, moral, and social sciences to establish. ~ Hermann Von Helmholtz
Mental Hospital quotes by Hermann Von Helmholtz
For the first time, Mary understood the attraction of coffee. If you have been up all night, escaping from a burning mental asylum or fighting men who refuse to die when you shoot them in the forehead, or both, coffee is the perfect beverage. ~ Theodora Goss
Mental Hospital quotes by Theodora Goss
No man or woman alive, magical or not, has ever escaped some form of injury, whether physical, mental, or emotional. To hurt is as human as to breathe. ~ J.K. Rowling
Mental Hospital quotes by J.K. Rowling
But the human mind, when it reaches the bottom of the abyss, must bounce back or disintegrate entirely. ~ Edward Bunker
Mental Hospital quotes by Edward Bunker
But since the downfall of the mythological hypothesis an interpretation of the dream has been wanting. The conditions of its origin; its relationship to our psychical life when we are awake; its independence of disturbances which, during the state of sleep, seem to compel notice; its many peculiarities repugnant to our waking thought; the incongruence between its images and the feelings they engender; then the dream's evanescence, the way in which, on awakening, our thoughts thrust it aside as something bizarre, and our reminiscences mutilating or rejecting it - all these and many other problems have for many hundred years demanded answers which up till now could never have been satisfactory. Before all there is the question as to the meaning of the dream, a question which is in itself double-sided. There is, firstly, the psychical significance of the dream, its position with regard to the psychical processes, as to a possible biological function; secondly, has the dream a meaning - can sense be made of each single dream as of other mental syntheses? ~ Sigmund Freud
Mental Hospital quotes by Sigmund Freud
Even if you get the opportunity to treat them the way they treated you, no matter how difficult it was, no matter how angry you feel, no matter how hard it is to do... I hope you find the strength to choose to do better and let the universe take care of the situation. ️ ~ Tanya Masse
Mental Hospital quotes by Tanya Masse
The strongest yet the biggest battle is to fight from yourself, for yourself. No one can even imagine the battle one goes through every day. So be strong, be courageous as You are Amazing! And the greatest warrior ~ Meeran W. Malik
Mental Hospital quotes by Meeran W. Malik
Other pressing problems with the current medical model [of mental disorder] is that it encourages false epidemics, most glaringly in bipolar disorder and ADHD, and the wholesale exportation of Western mental disorders and Western accounts of mental disorder. Taken together, this is leading to a pandemic of Western disease categories and treatments, while undermining the variety and richness of the human experience. ~ Neel Burton
Mental Hospital quotes by Neel Burton
Vic, of course, clasped Max's hand, obviously sizing him up, doing that macho squeeze thing that drove Gina nuts. "He's younger than I remember," he said to Gina. Perfect. Thank you so much, Victor. Then, back to Max, "We met - very briefly - a few years ago. Looks like being shot has agreed with you."
"That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard you say," Gina told the man who had just moved into first place as the most stupid of her three very stupid brothers.
"What?" Vic shrugged as he dragged over a chair. "I'm just saying - Max looks good. You know, for an older guy. What'd, ya lose weight while you were in the hospital?"
"Yes, Victor," Gina said. "They call it the Almost Dying Diet." She turned to Max. "My brother is an idiot."
"It's all right," he said, flexing his fingers - no doubt checking to make sure Victor hadn't broken his hand. ~ Suzanne Brockmann
Mental Hospital quotes by Suzanne Brockmann
He checks the horns. They're small: not truncated like Hellboy's, but wee, budding, trainer-bra efforts. Definitely not the thing that killed Dazza. In demon terms, he's looking at a midget or a waen. He recalls the ten second rule, and though they only clashed for a moment, it was more than enough. He understands. He has the measure. There is no paralysis by fear. There will be no subconscious surrender to superior mental force and aggression.
In short, he can take this cunt. ~ Christopher Brookmyre
Mental Hospital quotes by Christopher Brookmyre
Transcendental Meditation is a mental technique, so you travel to this field through subtler levels of mind, and then subtler levels of intellect, and then, at the border of intellect, you transcend and experience it. ~ David Lynch
Mental Hospital quotes by David Lynch
We share in the certainty that people labeled with mental illness are first and above all, human beings. Our lives are precious and are of infinite value. ~ Patricia Deegan
