Human relationships are the perfect tool for sanding away our rough edges and getting at the core of divinity within us. ~ Eknath Easwaran
Rough Edges quotes by Eknath Easwaran
That was true, Iris would sometimes think, about marriage: it was only a boat, too. A wooden boat, difficult to build, even more difficult to maintain, whose beauty derived at least in part from its unlikelihood. Long ago the pragmatic justifications for both marriage and wooden-boat building had been lost or superseded. Why invest countless hours, years, and dollars in planing and carving, gluing and fastening, caulking and fairing, when a fiberglass boat can be had at a fraction of the cost? Why struggle to maintain love and commitment over decades when there were far easier ways to live, ones that required no effort or attention to prevent corrosion and rot? Why continue to pour your heart into these obsolete arts? Because their beauty, the way they connect you to your history and to the living world, justifies your efforts. A long marriage, like a classic wooden boat, could be a thing of grace, but only if great effort was devoted to its maintenance. At first your notions of your life with another were no more substantial than a pattern laid down in plywood. Then year by year you constructed the frame around the form, and began layering memories, griefs, and small triumphs like strips of veneer planking bent around the hull of everyday routine. You sanded down the rough edges, patched the misunderstandings, faired the petty betrayals. Sometimes you sprung a leak. You fell apart in rough weather or were smashed on devouring rocks. But then, as now, in the teeth of a storm, ~ Ayelet Waldman
Rough Edges quotes by Ayelet Waldman
Time has that funny way of smoothing out the rough edges of things, even ones that hurt a little bit. Or a lot. ~ Megan Hart
Rough Edges quotes by Megan Hart
Life Lesson 8: Change is always hard, but time softens the rough edges and eases the pull of the past. Eventually, we all climb out from under the bed, and even the most unfamiliar places begin to feel like home. ~ Patti Davis
Rough Edges quotes by Patti Davis
Meditation without selfless giving is not enough. You may go into very high states of consciousness but the rough edges will still be there - there may be lots of selfish motives lurking within the self - that you don't see. ~ Frederick Lenz
Rough Edges quotes by Frederick Lenz
She couldn't move, couldn't breathe, with the sense of his gaze reaching in, taking ahold of the shaking inside. He'd always had that power - the crazy calm aura that seemed to suggest, given the chance, he could tame the world. Make the elements surrender, smooth out the rough edges of a mountain, and even teach the sky to call his name. Fearless. Confident. ~ Susan May Warren
Rough Edges quotes by Susan May Warren
True beauty, the kind that doesn't fade or wash off, takes time. It takes incredible endurance. It is the slow drip that creates the stalactite, the shaking of the Earth that creates mountains, the constant pounding of the waves that breaks up the rocks and smooths the rough edges. And from the violence, the furor, the raging of the winds, the roaring of the waters, something better emerges, something that would have otherwise never existed.
And so we endure. We have faith that there is purpose. We hope for things we can't see. We believe there are lessons in loss, power in love, and that we have within us the potential for a beauty so magnificent, our bodies can't contain it. ~ Amy Harmon
Rough Edges quotes by Amy Harmon
A thankful outlook smoothes the rough edges off life. ~ Deborah Norville
Rough Edges quotes by Deborah Norville
Why should you care about fine wine?" Kramer wrote. "The answer is surprisingly simple: Fine wine can - and indeed will - expand your world. It broadens and deepens the reach of your senses. It can help soften the rough edges of daily life and even remind you that beauty exists in moments when it seems least likely to penetrate your daily life. ~ Frances Dinkelspiel
Rough Edges quotes by Frances Dinkelspiel
In a lot of ways home improvement is like marriage. It's not glamorous. It can take a lot of hard work and effort. There are days it feels like it might be easier to burn the whole thing to the ground and start all over again. Then you remember how much you love the house or your husband and you recommit yourself to what it takes to see the whole thing through. Even when it might involve paintbrushes and compromise and sanding and scraping all the rough edges. And when you look back on a tough patch a few months after the worst has passed, you don't remember all the hard work and the tears. You just have the satisfaction of knowing you've made something beautiful. ~ Melanie Shankle
Rough Edges quotes by Melanie Shankle
Life is so full of rough edges - small tasks and expectations that scratch you bloody and remind you that you're naked and alone. ~ Alexis Hall
Rough Edges quotes by Alexis Hall
Never talk to waiters like that," Kit said.
"Can I help it," he said, "if I only went one year to finishing school?"
"It isn't manners," she said like a sensible schoolteacher quietly disciplining a small boy, "it just isn't smart."
I thought of the time I first told him not to say ain't. He took this the same way, a little peeved but making mental notes. I noticed he was never too much of an egotist to take criticism when he knew it would help. It was part of his genius for self-propulsion. I was beginning to see what Kit had for Sammy. Of course she stood for something never within his reach before. But it was more than that. Sammy seemed to know that his career was entering a new cycle where polish paid off. You could almost see him filing off the rough edges against the sharp blade of her mind. ~ Budd Schulberg
Rough Edges quotes by Budd Schulberg
But you are the only person I can show myself to. You always made my rough edges feel real. ~ Jodi Lynn Anderson
Rough Edges quotes by Jodi Lynn Anderson
Doing our imperfect best means accepting that there will often be mistakes, flaws, and rough edges. These mistakes, flaws, and rough edges add to the beauty of who we are and provide us with the power to connect with others. ~ Jason W. Freeman
Rough Edges quotes by Jason W. Freeman
Consent has rough edges. ~ Ian McEwan
Rough Edges quotes by Ian McEwan
I like rough edges. That's what makes a person real. ~ Cinda Williams Chima
Rough Edges quotes by Cinda Williams Chima
Nothing which is at all times and in every way agreeable to us can have objective reality. It is of the very nature of the real that it should have sharp corners and rough edges, that it should be resistant, should be itself. Dream-furniture is the only kind on which you never stub your toes or bang your knee. ~ C.S. Lewis
Rough Edges quotes by C.S. Lewis
When I'm not working, I want to be the version of the person that I was born to be. I was born with curly hair. It fits my personality, and it's totally who I am. I am rough around the edges, and I am not a polished girl. ~ Erin Wasson
Rough Edges quotes by Erin Wasson
Bemused and besotted as we are, we still dimly know at heart that nothing which is at all times and in every way agreeable to us can have objective reality. It is of the very nature of the real that it should have sharp corners and rough edges, that it should be resistant, should be itself. ~ C.S. Lewis
Rough Edges quotes by C.S. Lewis
Discussion without asperity, sympathy with fusion, gayety unracked by too abundant jests, mental ease in approaching one another; these are the things which give a pleasant smoothness to the rough edge of life. ~ Agnes Repplier
Rough Edges quotes by Agnes Repplier
Stop in the middle of a sentence, leaving a rough edge for you to start from the nest day - that way, you can write three or five words without being "creative" and before you know it, you're writing. ~ Cory Doctorow
Rough Edges quotes by Cory Doctorow
Life wasn't always easy, and had a way of filing down the sharp corners and rough edges. ~ Danielle Steel
Rough Edges quotes by Danielle Steel
With horror movies, a bigger budget is actually your enemy. You want to feel the rough edges, the handmade quality to good horror films. It's a genre that benefits from not having everything at your disposal. ~ Drew Goddard
Rough Edges quotes by Drew Goddard
I'm pretty rough around the edges, but I'm a very open person. ~ George Stroumboulopoulos
Rough Edges quotes by George Stroumboulopoulos
I love your rough edges
and soft parts that bleed.
The ruins of your soul
are poetry to me. ~ Anita Krizzan
Rough Edges quotes by Anita Krizzan
We're all flawed, and we all make mistakes, and we all have weaknesses. And those are the kind of people I want to see onscreen, the ones that feel like real flesh-and-blood human beings and not the weird, whitewashed, Hollywood stand-ins for people with the rough edges sanded off that I can't connect to because they just don't resonate with me. ~ Lynn Shelton
Rough Edges quotes by Lynn Shelton
Examine human handiwork under a microscope, and the closer you look, the more rough edges you find. It's inevitable. Our tools and manual abilities are limited. But look at God's handiwork under a microscope, and the deeper you go, the more organization and detail you find. ~ Ken Bible
Rough Edges quotes by Ken Bible
I Never Told You
You can fill a book with everything I never said
Or the lines of a poem
Or an Empty pool
Or an empty bedroom, the candles all blown out
I never told you how the reflection of myself in your eyes
Was the only mirror I could bear to look at
Or how I fought every day
To transfuse the girl I saw there with the girl I am
I tried to breathe in the words you made me:
beautiful
good
brave
I tried to be them for you even though they were weighted with impossibility
I never told you
how I always feared the rough edges of myself were too sharp for you
and how I fought everyday to blunt them
To bring down the walls
To let you in
without cutting you because I could never bear to hurt you like the others did
Every day
a fierce pride roared in me
I was so lucky to know the truth
I was the beneficiary of your radiance
I basked in it and felt special
And if not for the pain of your solitude
I would have been content to be the only one
I never told you
How your touch made me feel like laughing and crying and singing all at once
How your hand passing over my skin where atrocities
Had not yet sloughed off,
Skin cells remembering the worst touches
Was like a tide washing over the ruddy sand
And leaving it whole and smooth
You made my skin forget
Gave me new memories
New sensations that didn't drag th ~ Emma Scott
Rough Edges quotes by Emma Scott
By contrast to the above views, people with self-esteem believe they are neither more or less than human. Knowing their faults and rough edges, they still are deeply and quietly glad to be who they are (Briggs 1977). They are like the good friend who knows you well and likes you anyway because they recognize the goodness, excellence, and potential that coexist alongside imperfections. ~ Glenn R. Schiraldi
Rough Edges quotes by Glenn R. Schiraldi
Poems are soft kitten furs. smoothing out the rough edges of my world. ~ Sanober Khan
Rough Edges quotes by Sanober Khan
We were too rough at the edges to be a pop group. ~ Roger Daltrey
Rough Edges quotes by Roger Daltrey
There is no such thing as a perfect match. There are only somewhat good and somewhat bad matches. A couple are like two pebbles that are next to each other on a beach. They will have rough edges and rub each other the wrong way initially. But as they spend time together and the waves pound them, the edges rub off and they will seem made for each other. ~ Farahad Zama
Rough Edges quotes by Farahad Zama
I think that is why - why God allows hard things in life. To prepare us. To knock off rough edges - pride, bias, envy, selfishness - so that when we get to heaven we will be more in tune - more able to enjoy the beautiful things we'll find there. Maybe that's what the rewards will be. A deeper appreciation of what we are given - what we are a part of. ~ Janette Oke
Rough Edges quotes by Janette Oke
Outside the study hall the next fall, the fall of our senior year, the Nabisco plant baked sweet white bread twice a week. If I sharpened a pencil at the back of the room I could smell the baking bread and the cedar shavings from the pencil.... Pretty soon all twenty of us - our class - would be leaving. A core of my classmates had been together since kindergarten. I'd been there eight years. We twenty knew by bored heart the very weave of each other's socks....

The poems I loved were in French, or translated from the Chinese, Portuguese, Arabic, Sanskrit, Greek. I murmured their heartbreaking sylllables. I knew almost nothing of the diverse and energetic city I lived in. The poems whispered in my ear the password phrase, and I memorized it behind enemy lines: There is a world. There is another world.

I knew already that I would go to Hollins College in Virginia; our headmistress sent all her problems there, to her alma mater. "For the English department," she told me.... But, "To smooth off her rough edges," she had told my parents. They repeated the phrase to me, vividly.

I had hopes for my rough edges. I wanted to use them as a can opener, to cut myself a hole in the world's surface, and exit through it. Would I be ground, instead, to a nub? Would they send me home, an ornament to my breed, in a jewelry bag? ~ Annie Dillard
Rough Edges quotes by Annie Dillard
I didn't know if his art was helping. But Moses's pictures were like that, glorious and terrible. Glorious because they brought memory to life, terrible for the same reason.
Time softens memories, sanding down the rough edges of death.
But Moses's pictures dripped with life and reminded us of our loss. ~ Amy Harmon
Rough Edges quotes by Amy Harmon
Rough edges were what you needed because they were what you sharpened yourself against. Nobody ever got sharp from lying in a feather bed. ~ M.R. Carey
Rough Edges quotes by M.R. Carey
Time softens memories, sanding down the rough edges of death. ~ Amy Harmon
Rough Edges quotes by Amy Harmon
Contrary to what most people think, making a decision is one of the easiest decisions in the world, as is more than proved by the fact that we make decision upon decision throughout the day, there, however, we run straight into the heart of the matter, for these decisions always come to us afterward with their particular little problems, or, to make ourselves quite clear, with their rough edges needing to be smoothed, the first of these problems being our capacity for sticking to a decision and the second our willingness to follow it through. ~ Jose Saramago
Rough Edges quotes by Jose Saramago
Time. It rubs the rough edges that hurt us smooth. ~ Nina George
Rough Edges quotes by Nina George
When I tested for Billy Budd, I had that kind of confidence that comes with the certainty that you're not going to get something. I was very rough around the edges. ~ Terence Stamp
Rough Edges quotes by Terence Stamp
I run my fingers along its rough edges a moment, remembering the day Darian and I borrowed his dad's carving knife and engraved our initials in place. ~ Shannon Duffy
Rough Edges quotes by Shannon Duffy
Humans are drawn to each other's rough edges. ~ K. Bromberg
Rough Edges quotes by K. Bromberg
In every such society, there is a cherished world of myth and metaphor which co-exists with the workaday world. Efforts to reconcile the two are made, and any rough edges at the joints tend to be off-limits and ignored. We compartmentalize. Some scientists do this too, effortlessly stepping between the skeptical world of science and the credulous world of religious belief without skipping a beat. Of course, the greater the mismatch between these two worlds, the more difficult it is to be comfortable, with untroubled conscience, with both. ~ Carl Sagan
Rough Edges quotes by Carl Sagan
What good it would have done me at that time to have been tossed in the storms of an uncertain struggling like, and to have been taught by rough and bitter experience to long for the calm amidst which I now repined! ~ Charlotte Bronte
Rough Edges quotes by Charlotte Bronte
You know, there's probably a lot of moisture in caves, too, which would be bad for my hair. And all those sharp edges. I wouldn't want to move. I'd just sit in the cave all day long and think about how scared I was to ~ Ellen DeGeneres
Rough Edges quotes by Ellen DeGeneres
Regardless of how rough we may appear on the exterior, each of us had a human heart. ~ Dean Koontz
Rough Edges quotes by Dean Koontz
I like Carson. I really like Carson. I can hand an idea to him that's still a little rough, and he can turn it over and tumble it and hand it back to me shining. And I can do the same for him. ~ Dexter Palmer
Rough Edges quotes by Dexter Palmer
Nicholas Temelcoff is famous on the bridge, a daredevil. He is given all the difficult jobs and he takes them. He descends into the air with no fear. He is a solitary. He assembles ropes, brushes the tackle and pulley at his waist, and falls off the bridge like a diver over the edge of a boat. ~ Michael Ondaatje
Rough Edges quotes by Michael Ondaatje
When something is new and hard and bright, there ought to be something a little better for it than just being safe, since the safe things are just the things that folks have been doing so long they have worn the edges off and there's nothing to the doing of them that leaves a man to say, That was not done before and it cannot be done again. ~ William Faulkner
Rough Edges quotes by William Faulkner
Death is by no means separate from life ... We all interact with death every day, tasting it as we might a wine, feeling its keen edge even in trifling losses and disappointments, holding it by the hand, as a dancer might a partner, in every separation. ~ Eugene Kennedy
Rough Edges quotes by Eugene Kennedy
Outlandish lyrics sung by smiling people in perfect harmony. Has that edge of surprise ... a little nuts and really funny. ~ Mick LaSalle
Rough Edges quotes by Mick LaSalle
Success can make you go one of two ways. It can make you a prima donna - or it can smooth the edges, take away the insecurities, let the nice things come out. ~ Barbara Walters
Rough Edges quotes by Barbara Walters
Analysis is like a lobotomy. Who wants to have all their edges shaved off? ~ David Byrne
Rough Edges quotes by David Byrne
Sometimes the personalities at the helm of the madness industry are, with their drives and obsessions, as mad in their own way as those they study. And that relatively ordinary people are, more and more, defined by their maddest edges. ~ Jon Ronson
Rough Edges quotes by Jon Ronson
Like ships that have gone down at sea, when heaven was all tranquillity. ~ Thomas Moore
Rough Edges quotes by Thomas Moore
The world, nature, human beings, do not move like machines. The edges are never clear-cut, but always frayed. Nature never draws a line without smudging it. ~ Winston Churchill
Rough Edges quotes by Winston Churchill
Originally it had had two settings: Stun and Kill. These had proved inadequate against the ridiculously well-armored skin of monsters from particularly rough planets, so I'd found a way to tinker with the built-in limitations. The dial now had a third setting, labeled with the handwritten words 'Solve All Immediate Problems. ~ Yahtzee Croshaw
Rough Edges quotes by Yahtzee Croshaw
Is that the only thing that's important to you?" he asks, his voice low and rough. "The job?"
"No. The girls are everything to me," I take in a deep breath. "As are you. ~ Karina Halle
Rough Edges quotes by Karina Halle
The road of life can be tough at times. when the road gets bumpy and rough you must buckle up and go for the ride.
Every road in life is a teacher if you are willing to learn from it. In order to grow and prosper you must take the ride, just buckle up put on your sunglasses and enjoy the ride. ~ Charles E Hudson
Rough Edges quotes by Charles E Hudson
One of the greatest feelings in life is the conviction that you have lived the life you wanted to live-with the rough and the smooth, the good and the bad-but yours, shaped by your own choices, and not someone else's. ~ Michael Ignatieff
Rough Edges quotes by Michael Ignatieff
The temptation to hide in his job, to allow all his thoughts and emotions to become absorbed in the details of his career was hard to resist. It felt like virtue and it was quite possible to be completely self-righteous about it. But it was, he knew, only cowardice in disguise. If you weren't willing to face your life - all your life, including the rough parts - then you weren't truly living. You were just making a living. He ~ Pamela Morsi
Rough Edges quotes by Pamela Morsi
Maybe that's what love does - smooths the hard edges of life, giving us a gentle place to land when we fall. ~ Beth Hoffman
Rough Edges quotes by Beth Hoffman
Hey." Marcus cupped my cheek with his rough hand and lifted my face, so I would look at him. "If you wanna be free, Asia, all you have to do is see yourself through my eyes. If you could see how beautiful you are, what an amazing artist you've become, how you light up a room just by walking into it, you would realize that you have no reason to keep yourself locked up. You should be proud of who you are, babe. 'Cause you are amazing. ~ E.M. Abel
Rough Edges quotes by E.M. Abel
Wine is a living, breathing thing during its time in the bottle and in the glass. It is always changing, especially in the glass. A little oxygen can really open up and release the flavors in a complex wine, as well as mellow the rougher edge of immaturity. ~ Mireille Guiliano
Rough Edges quotes by Mireille Guiliano
Like any other boy in the world that does a little bit of rough-and-tumble and playing around when they're a kid, who doesn't want to be an action star at some point? ~ Chris Vance
Rough Edges quotes by Chris Vance
The latter part of our Journey from the entrance of Wiltshire into Salisbury was very rough and abounded with Jolts, the Holes we were obliged to go through being very many and some of them Deep; and so it was with much Relief that we left the Coach at Salisbury and hired two Horses for the road across the Avon to the Plain and Stone-henge. When we came to the edge of this sacred Place, we tethered our Horses to the Posts provided and then, with the Sunne direct above us, walked over the short grass which (continually cropt by the flocks of Sheep) seemed to spring us forward to the great Stones. I stood back a little as Sir Chris. walked on, and I considered the Edifice with steadinesse: there was nothing here to break the Angles of Sight and as I gaz'd I opened my Mouth to cry out but my Cry was silent; I was struck by an exstatic Reverie in which all the surface of this Place seemed to me Stone, and the Sky itself Stone, and I became Stone as I joined the Earth which flew on like a Stone through the Firmament. And thus I stood until the Kaw of a Crow rous'd me: and yet even the call of the black Bird was an Occasion for Terrour, since it was not of this Time. I know not how long a Period I had traversed in my Mind, but Sir Chris. was still within my Sight when my Eyes were cleard of Mist. He was walking steadily towards the massie Structure and I rushed violently to catch him, for I greatly wished to enter the Circle before him. I stopped him with a Cry and then ran on: whe ~ Peter Ackroyd
Rough Edges quotes by Peter Ackroyd
Your eyes."
"What? What?" I scrubbed at them violently, horrified at the thought they might have those gross goopy things at the edges. Or were they even more bloodshot? I'd heard of that happening, where the whites ran with blood.
"I think ... the color's changing." He paused. "Is that even possible?"
"Is that all? Now you're the one scaring the crap out of me. ~ Alyxandra Harvey
Rough Edges quotes by Alyxandra Harvey
The indie kids, huh? You've got them at your school, too. That group with the cool-geek haircuts and the charity shop clothes and names from the fifties. Nice enough, never mean, but always the ones who end up being the Chosen One when the vampires come calling or when the alien queen needs the Source of All Light or something. They're too cool to ever, ever do anything like go to prom or listen to music other than jazz while reading poetry. They've always got some story going on that they're heroes of. The rest of us just have to live here, hovering around the edges, left out of it all, for the most part. ~ Patrick Ness
Rough Edges quotes by Patrick Ness
Birdie is silent. She is tired of soon. Soon is round and smooth, without never's honest jagged edges. Soon is like the End of the World, always approaching but never arriving. Soon is the excuse people use when nothing ever happens on time. ~ Jenny Hollowell
Rough Edges quotes by Jenny Hollowell
There is never going to be a good time for us. You can't force together two objects whose edges are worn in some spots and jagged in others. We're not puzzle pieces. We're two people who have a world of shit between them. But my mind is quiet when our gazes meet. ~ Rebecca Paula
Rough Edges quotes by Rebecca Paula
I don't like to play rough, but I will if I have to. ~ Mia Hamm
Rough Edges quotes by Mia Hamm
It's - it's as if there is a dragon inside me. I don't know how big she is; she may still be growing. But she has wings, and strength, and - and I can't keep her in a cage. She'll die. I'll die. I know it isn't modest to say these things, but I know I'm capable of more than life in Scirland will allow. It's all right for women to study theology, or literature, but nothing so rough and ready as this. And yet this is what I want. Even if it's hard, even if it's dangerous. I don't care. I need to see where my wings can carry me. ~ Marie Brennan
Rough Edges quotes by Marie Brennan
The Pleiades and northern lights are still above the mountain. The mountain is in the east, and on its slopes there are reindeer. Reindeer always remind me of trees that have taken to moving. They remind me even more of trees than people do. In the distant past, reindeer were trees as people were, but they haven't come such a long way from their origins, and the branches can be seen although they no longer bear leaves.
I have my bedtime book in my hand and my pocket light and walk toward the mountain over the edges of the moorland in rubber boots. The book is a relative of mine, I feel; it is made out of trees and human thought, and thus the relationship becomes twofold. These are ancient poems that I am taking to the mountains and the reindeer. ~ Gyrdir Eliasson
Rough Edges quotes by Gyrdir Eliasson
The stock market is like a small row boat on a rough sea, bouncing around as it drifts, whereas the macro economy is like a large ocean liner, very ponderous and difficult to maneuver but without such a rough journey. ~ Clive Granger
Rough Edges quotes by Clive Granger
Major General Leonard Wood

Leonard Wood was an army officer and physician, born October 9, 1860 in Winchester, New Hampshire. His first assignment was in 1886 at Fort Huachuca, Arizona where he fought in the last campaign against the fierce Apache warrior Geronimo. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for carrying dispatches 100 miles through hostile territory and was promoted to the rank of Captain, commanding a detachment of the 8th Infantry.

From 1887 to 1898, he served as a medical officer in a number of positions, the last of which was as the personal physician to President William McKinley. In 1898 at the beginning of the war with Spain, he was given command of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry. The regiment was soon to be known as the "Rough Riders." Wood lead his men on the famous charge up San Juan Hill and was given a field promotion to brigadier general.

In 1898 he was appointed the Military Governor of Santiago de Cuba. In 1920, as a retired Major General, Wood ran as the Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States, losing to Warren Harding. In 1921 following his defeat, General Wood accepted the post of Governor General of the Philippines. He held this position from 1921 to 1927, when he died of a brain tumor in Boston, on 7 August 1927, at 66 years of age after which he was buried, with full honors, in Arlington National Cemetery. ~ Hank Bracker
Rough Edges quotes by Hank Bracker
Finding a woman like that amidst the herd of half-feeling, half-caring, half-responding, females in our society of 1860's England was not so much like finding a diamond in the rough as it was finding a warm responsive body amidst the cold dead forms on slabs in the Paris morgue that Dickens had so enjoyed taking me to. ~ Dan Simmons
Rough Edges quotes by Dan Simmons
Farewells can be shattering, but returns are surely worse. Solid flesh can never live up to the bright shadow cast by its absence. Time and distance blur the edges; then suddenly the beloved has arrived, and it's noon with its merciless light, and every spot and pore and wrinkle and bristle stands clear. ~ Margaret Atwood
Rough Edges quotes by Margaret Atwood
As for the primitive, I hark back to it because we are still very primitive. How many thousands of years of culture, think you, have rubbed and polished at our raw edges? One probably; at the best, no more than two. And that takes us back to screaming savagery, when, gross of body and deed, we drank blood from the skulls of our enemies, and hailed as highest paradise the orgies and carnage of Valhalla. ~ Jack London
Rough Edges quotes by Jack London
He had forgotten how convincing the world could look, how sure of itself: its outlines and edges; it's gradations, recessions, protrusions; it's startling and vulgar colors. ~ Gregory Maguire
Rough Edges quotes by Gregory Maguire
I want to fight, Becky. Can you understand that? I want struggle, I want danger. You know, Sally said something to me once: we were talking about happiness and what that might mean. She said she didn't want to be /happy/, that was a weak, passive sort of thing; she wanted to be alive and active. She wanted /work/. That's the spirit I like. That's what I want; and my work is a rough dirty dangerous kind of work. Oh, I want other things too. I want to write a play and see Henry Irving perform in it. I want to swank about town smoking Havanas and have supper with pretty girls in the Cafe Royal. I want to play poker on a Mississippi riverboat. I want to see Dan Goldberg get into Parliament. I want to see you go to university and get a first-class degree. Sally ... Sally can do anything we wants, by me. There's a whole world I want, Becky. ~ Philip Pullman
Rough Edges quotes by Philip Pullman
Lord, Your faithful love reaches to heaven, Your faithfulness to the skies." ... Does your love reach this far, God? And if it extends to heaven and beyond ... why can't it seem to find me?
"It's beautiful" I said, my voice clouded wroth embarrassment.
"It's more than that." He watched the ocean below. "It's like God painted it himself, then spun it into motion." Beckett angled hos head toward me, took his aviators off, and let his eyes burn into mine. "This is Ireland, Finley. It's rough. It's wild. And it's holy. ~ Jenny B. Jones
Rough Edges quotes by Jenny B. Jones
Quentin quieted and watched her for a moment, hungrily, like he was trying to memorize every detail. Maybe he was. Forever is a long time. You have to burn the edges of memory onto your heart, or they can fade, and sometimes the second loss is worse than the first one. ~ Seanan McGuire
Rough Edges quotes by Seanan McGuire
It's a French technique. Soups get screened, and sauces. Forced through a tamis or a chinois. Everything that comes out is smooth and all the rough parts get left behind, thrown away. I don't want to be screened. ~ Jael McHenry
Rough Edges quotes by Jael McHenry
The old man moaned and maundered, murmured, muttered, mumbled odds of this and ends of that, bits and pieces, shreds and edges, full of ifs and whens and theres and thens, amounting in the end and all to six times less than nothing. ~ James Thurber
Rough Edges quotes by James Thurber
I think that's one thing that, you know, we all need to remember is that, you know, politics, even though it's been really rough, is that we are all human beings first. And that it is more important for us to have civil dialogue. And you know what? I'm conservative, but I'm not mad about it. ~ Marlin Stutzman
Rough Edges quotes by Marlin Stutzman
The whole idea is to get an edge. Sometimes it takes just a little extra something to get that edge, but you have to have it. ~ Don Shula
Rough Edges quotes by Don Shula
Because I don't like the idea of you facing them alone. Because I'm not dating you because you're convenient. Because I don't want to simply have sex with you or hang out with you." He stroked the line of Paul's beard. "I want to be with. You. I want to watch gooey movies with you, and laugh and play and figure out new ways to enjoy sex, but I want to help you through the rough parts of life too. ~ Heidi Cullinan
Rough Edges quotes by Heidi Cullinan
To die on a kitchen floor at 7 o'clock in the morning while other people are frying eggs is not so rough unless it happens to you. ~ Charles Bukowski
