To-day I think
Only with scents, - scents dead leaves yield,
And bracken, and wild carrot's seed,
And the square mustard field;
Odours that rise
When the spade wounds the root of tree,
Rose, currant, raspberry, or goutweed,
Rhubarb or celery;
The smoke's smell, too,
Flowing from where a bonfire burns
The dead, the waste, the dangerous,
And all to sweetness turns.
It is enough
To smell, to crumble the dark earth,
While the robin sings over again
Sad songs of Autumn mirth.
- A poem called DIGGING. ~ Edward Thomas
Sad Songs quotes by Edward Thomas
But then you left exactly how all the sad songs said you would ~ Andrew Faulkner
Sad Songs quotes by Andrew Faulkner
I love sad songs. They say so much. I love country music but even the happy songs sound really sad. ~ Beth Ditto
Sad Songs quotes by Beth Ditto
Song

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

Sir Thomas Wyatt has been credited with introducing the Petrarchan sonnet into the English language. Wyatt's father had been one of Henry VII's Privy Councilors and remained a trusted adviser when Henry VIII came to the throne in 1509. Wyatt followed his father to court, but it seems the young poet may have fallen in love with the king's mistress, Anne Boleyn. Their acquaintance is certain, although whether or not the two actually shared a romantic relationship remains unknown. But in his poetry, Wyatt called his mistress Anna and there do seem to be correspondences. For instance, this poem might well have been written about the King's claim on Anne Boleyn: ~ Christina Rossetti
Sad Songs quotes by Christina Rossetti
I don't wanta do any Blues or any sad songs. ~ Bob Livingston
Sad Songs quotes by Bob Livingston
I think there is something beautiful in reveling in sadness. The proof is how beautiful sad songs can be. So I don't think being sad is to be avoided. It's apathy and boredom you want to avoid. But feeling anything is good, I think. Maybe that's sadistic of me. ~ Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Sad Songs quotes by Joseph Gordon-Levitt
CAN YOU TURN THAT OFF, GRANDMA?' I shouted down. 'YOU KNOW I AM STRUGGLING.'

There was a long pause.

'Who yuh tink yuh talking to?' my grandmother shouted back. 'Yuh tink say you can be DJ inna my house cause of a man? ~ Candice Carty-Williams
Sad Songs quotes by Candice Carty-Williams
I try to make an album that reflects what I love about country music. It's not just all about happy parties all the time. There are some sad songs. ~ Dierks Bentley
Sad Songs quotes by Dierks Bentley
And all the people said 'What a shame that he's dead, but wasn't he a most peculiar man? ~ Paul Simon
Sad Songs quotes by Paul Simon
Even in the sad songs, I want people to know that it won't always be like that. ~ Rayvon Owen
Sad Songs quotes by Rayvon Owen
I love the sad songs with their maudlin, self-deprecating, almost funny lyrics. As an Englishman, they make a lot of sense. ~ Teddy Thompson
Sad Songs quotes by Teddy Thompson
When my dad passed, there's a lot of sadness right below the surface, and I think there will be until the day I die. So, writing sad songs helps it. And when I sing them, it's pure therapy for me. ~ Ashley Monroe
Sad Songs quotes by Ashley Monroe
I don't want to die and leave a few sad songs and a hump in the ground as my only monument. I want to leave a world that is liberated from trash, pollution, racism, nation-states, nation-state wars and armies, from pomp, bigotry, parochialism, a thousand different brands of untruth and licentious, usurious economics. ~ George Jackson
Sad Songs quotes by George Jackson
We all get our hearts broken. We get fucked up and throw up and we cry and listen to sad songs and say we're never doing that again. But to be alive is to do it again. To love is to risk everything ~ Caroline Kepnes
Sad Songs quotes by Caroline Kepnes
My playlists are cluttered
with sad songs and fractured memories,
yet I unconvincingly claim I am trying to
move on. ~ Noor Shirazie
Sad Songs quotes by Noor Shirazie
The hourglass had ruptured
Spewing forth the sands of time
Burying past in present
Leaving future without rhyme

The children had stopped crying,
Their tears no longer tended
They sang sad songs of silence
All time had been suspended

The howling winds subsided
The sun no longer beamed
All rays of hope had ended
Man had not been redeemed

Alone the void had quivered
Embracing its despair
Sighing with hope
Seething with new care

The children's tears were tended
The hourglass had mended ~ Beryl Dov
Sad Songs quotes by Beryl Dov
Gentle lady, do not sing
Sad songs about the end of love;
Lay aside sadness and sing
How love that passes is enough.
Sing about the long deep sleep
Of lovers that are dead, and how
In the grave all love shall sleep:
Love is aweary now. ~ James Joyce
Sad Songs quotes by James Joyce
If I could be more vague I'd write more about people in my life, but I hate hurting feelings or making people feel uncomfortable. I've done that before. Unless they're sad songs. Those get finished fast, but the mean ones often end up at the back of the bottom drawer and it's probably for the best. ~ Caitlin Rose
Sad Songs quotes by Caitlin Rose
I like singer-songwriters, and I find sad songs comforting rather than depressing. It makes you realise you're not alone in the world. ~ Natalie Imbruglia
Sad Songs quotes by Natalie Imbruglia
When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me ~ Christina Rossetti
Sad Songs quotes by Christina Rossetti
Sad songs are not my strong suit. All the songs that have saved my life make you feel like driving with the top down or dancing in your room with your best friend. ~ J.C. Lillis
Sad Songs quotes by J.C. Lillis
I always think of the live show first, where the song is gonna go in the show. That's why they aren't sad songs. When I play, I want to make people happy, not sad. It's such a pleasure for me to do what I do, and I want other people to feel some form of that pleasure, too. ~ Jason Mraz
Sad Songs quotes by Jason Mraz
In all jazz, and especially the blues, there is something tart and ironic, authoritative and double-edged. White Americans seem to feel that happy songs are happy and sad songs are sad, and that, God help us, is exactly the way most white Americans sing them - sounding, in both cases, so helplessly, defenselessly fatuous that one dare not speculate on the temperature of the deep freeze from which issue their brave and sexless little voices. Only people who have been "down the line," as the song puts it, know what this music is about…. White Americans do not understand the depths out of which such an ironic tenacity comes, but they suspect that the force is sensual, and they are terrified of sensuality, and do not any longer understand it. The word "sensual" is not intended to bring to mind quivering dusky maidens or priapic black studs. I am referring to something much simpler and much less fanciful. To be sensual, I think, is to respect and rejoice in the force of life, of life itself, and to be present in all that one does, from the effort of loving to the breaking of bread. It will be a great day for America, incidentally, when we begin to eat bread again, instead of the blasphemous and tasteless foam rubber that we have substituted for it. And I am not being frivolous here, either. ~ James Baldwin
Sad Songs quotes by James Baldwin
I don't know any sad songs. Except for the funny ones. ~ Richard Powers
Sad Songs quotes by Richard Powers
When people come and see me, I want them to experience joy. I don't do any sad songs in my show. It's to lift the spirit. ~ Darlene Love
Sad Songs quotes by Darlene Love
I used to wonder why Lucy liked those songs so much. You know what I mean? She sits in the dark and listens and cries. Music does that to her ... I didn't understand for a long time. But I do now. The sad songs are a safe hurt. It's a diversion. It's controlled. And maybe it helps you imagine that real pain will be like that. But it's not. Lucy knows that, of course. You can't prepare for real pain. You just have to let it rip you apart. ~ Harlan Coben
Sad Songs quotes by Harlan Coben
I am certain that over the course of your own life, you have noticed that people's rooms reflect their personalities. In my room, for instance, I have gathered a collection of objects that are important to me, including a dusty accordion on which I can play a few sad songs, a large bundle of notes on the activities of the Baudelaire orphans, and a blurry photograph, taken a very long time ago, of a woman whose name is Beatrice. These are items that are very precious and dear to me. ~ Lemony Snicket
Sad Songs quotes by Lemony Snicket
The marketing geniuses on the corporate side of the country music labels had decided to start using focus groups to test their products before they were developed or released. An example of this would be to ask the focus group whether they liked sad songs or happy songs. "We like happy songs!" the focus group would chirp, and the word would go back to the writers and producers to come up with "happy" songs to record. This made it especially hard on the songwriters, who rarely feel a need to write when they are happy, as then they are busy luxuriating in the pleasure of happiness. When something bad happens, they want to find a way to transcend it, so they write a song about it. When Hank Williams, one of the greatest and most successful country artists of all time, wrote a song like "Your Cheatin' Heart" or "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," he wasn't writing "happy" songs, yet they made the listener feel better. The listener could feel that someone else had gone through an experience similar to the listener's own, and then went to the trouble and effort to write it down accurately and share the experience like a compassionate friend might do. In this way, hearing a song like "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" could make the listener feel better, or "happy. ~ Linda Ronstadt
Sad Songs quotes by Linda Ronstadt
Words are not enough. Not mine, cut off at the throat before they breathe. Never forming, broken and swallowed, tossed into the void before they are heard. It would be easy to follow, fall to my knees, prostrate before the deli counter. Sweep the shelves clear, scatter the tins, pound the cakes to powder. Supermarket isles stretching out in macabre displays. Christmas madness, sad songs and mistletoe, packed car parks, rotten leaves banked up in corners. Forgotten reminders of summer before the storm. Never trust a promise, they take prisoners and wishes never come true. Fairy stories can have grim endings and I don't know how I will face the world without you. ~ Peter B. Forster
Sad Songs quotes by Peter B. Forster
I don't think of my songs as sad songs. I think of them as vulnerable and honest. I crack jokes in between songs, so people don't leave feeling too dark. ~ Mary Lambert
Sad Songs quotes by Mary Lambert
The fear of death haunted me for a year. I cried whenever anyone dropped a glass or broke a picture. But even then that passed, I was left with a sadness that couldn't be rubbed off. It wasn't that something had happened. It was worse: I'd become aware of what had been with me all along without my notice. I dragged this new awareness around like a stone tied to my ankle. Wherever I went, it followed. I used to make up little sad songs in my head. I eulogized the falling leaves. I imagined my death in a hundred different ways, but the funeral was always the same: from somewhere in my imagination, out rolled a red carpet. Because after every secret death I died, my greatness was always discovered. ~ Nicole Krauss
Sad Songs quotes by Nicole Krauss
It's fun to sing sad songs. And it's fun to listen to sad songs. Enjoyable. Satisfying. Something. ~ Richard Thompson
Sad Songs quotes by Richard Thompson
I like to write sad songs. They're much easier to write and you get a lot more emotion into them. But people don't want to hear them as much. And radio definitely doesn't; they want that positive, uptempo thing. ~ Alan Jackson
Sad Songs quotes by Alan Jackson
In terms of love, you're not in control and I hate that feeling. I seem to write a lot of sad songs because I'm a very tragic person. But there's always an element of humour at the end. ~ Freddie Mercury
Sad Songs quotes by Freddie Mercury
But everyone has a voice, and everyone sings. Oh, we all do it differently. Some of us sing quietly, alone, only in the dead of night or in the shower. Some of us sing a cappella, and some stand on a stage beside a band and let the whole world share their song. Some of us, some of us don't sing at all, like that. We sing with other instruments: There's song in stores, and in art, and in getting up before the dawn and putting food onto the table. There are angry songs and sad songs and songs that make you want to dance. But everybody has a song to sing, their own personal story leaked into the world. And mine is one of love. ~ Fox Benwell
Sad Songs quotes by Fox Benwell
I can feel it, Annie whispered.
The air is heavy with ghosts.
The birds sing only sad songs.
The ground swallowed many tears. ~ Sharon Kernot
Sad Songs quotes by Sharon Kernot
It is mostly when we are very young that we take the greatest delight in the sad songs; those who have felt the real bitterness of sorrow are glad to bury it deeply away, and do not wish it wakened, as sailors' wives love a place best where they cannot hear the sound of the sea. ~ Angela Brazil
Sad Songs quotes by Angela Brazil
I like 'Bewitched' off the first album because it's one of the happiest songs I've ever written and, as any writer will tell you, happy songs are a million times more difficult to write than sad songs. ~ Malcolm Wilson
Sad Songs quotes by Malcolm Wilson
That's what is so great about being able to record a 13-song album. You can do a very eclectic group of songs. You do have some almost pop songs in there, but you do have your traditional country, story songs. You have your ballads, your happy songs, your sad songs, your love songs, and your feisty songs. ~ Reba McEntire
Sad Songs quotes by Reba McEntire
I think a lot of people think that my parents' deaths is why I write such sad songs, but that's not true. Those songs may just be the woman I am. ~ Shelby Lynne
Sad Songs quotes by Shelby Lynne
If I'm a bad person, you don't like me
Well I guess I'll make my own way
It's a circle
A mean cycle
I can't excite you anymore
Where's your gavel? Your jury?
What's my offense this time?
You're not a judge but if you're gonna judge me
Well sentence me to another life

Don't wanna hear your sad songs
I don't wanna feel your pain
When you swear it's all my fault
Cause you know we're not the same (no)
We're not the same (no)
Oh we're not the same
Yeah the friends who stuck together
We wrote our names in blood
But I guess you can't accept that the change is good (hey)
It's good (hey)
It's good

Well you treat me just like another stranger
Well it's nice to meet you sir
I guess I'll go
I best be on my way out
You treat me just like another stranger
Well it's nice to meet you sir
I guess I'll go
I best be on my way out

Ignorance is your new best friend
Ignorance is your new best friend

This is the best thing that could've happened
Any longer and I wouldn't have made it
It's not a war no, it's not a rapture
I'm just a person but you can't take it
The same tricks that, that once fooled me
They won't get you anywhere
I'm not the same kid from your memory
Well now I can fend for myself

Don't wanna hear your sad songs
I don't wanna feel your pain
When you swear i ~ Hayley Williams
Sad Songs quotes by Hayley Williams
Generally I don't listen to sad songs if I'm sad. I listen to happy songs. ~ Sinead O'Connor
Sad Songs quotes by Sinead O'Connor
And she would feel that sharp loneliness she had felt every long evening since she was a child. It was the kind of loneliness that made clocks seem slow and loud and made voices sound like voices across water. Old women she had known, first her grandmother and then her mother, rocked on their porches in the evenings and sang sad songs, and did not wish to be spoken to. ~ Marilynne Robinson
Sad Songs quotes by Marilynne Robinson
So don't fall in love, there's just too much to lose; if you're given the chance then I'm begging you choose to walk away, walk away, don't let it get you. I can't bear to see the same thing happen to you. ~ Mayday Parade
Sad Songs quotes by Mayday Parade
I appreciate when people listen to the sad songs, because it's almost like telling someone your problems and having them listen with a compassionate ear. ~ Jhene Aiko
Sad Songs quotes by Jhene Aiko
How the world loves her sad songs! ~ Marty Rubin
Sad Songs quotes by Marty Rubin
It is true that the present is powerfully shaped by the past. But it is also true that ... insight at any age keeps us from singing the same sad songs again. ~ Judith Viorst
Sad Songs quotes by Judith Viorst
Will sat where he was, gazing at the silver bowl in front of him; a white rose was floating in it, and he seemed prepared to stare at it until it went under. In the Kitchen Bridget was still singing one of her awful sad songs; the lyrics drifted in through the door:
"Twas on an evening fair I went to take the air,
I heard a maid making her moan;
Said, 'Saw ye my father? Or ye my mother?
Or saw ye my brother John?
Or saw ye the lad that I love best,
And his name it is Sweet William?"
I may murder her, Tessa thought. Let her make a song about that. ~ Cassandra Clare
Sad Songs quotes by Cassandra Clare
I always hated...all sad songs. I thought they made happy people miserable. Now I think I understand them better. Bards write them because they can't hold them back. Sadness has got to flow out or it gets stuck and turns bitter. ~ Jonathan Renshaw
Sad Songs quotes by Jonathan Renshaw
I'm jealous, and i am because you give yourself to people who don't know your worth, to people who don't appreciate you or your time. and it makes me wonder, you know? why? why in the world would such a beautiful person put themselves through so much pain? I don't get it. you have everything in front of you. everyone you need, people who adore you and love you. people who you've over looked. open your eyes, sweet pea, the people you spend most of your time thinking of, stressing over, don't want you. hell, they barely even notice when you're not around and still, you want to believe that it's the kind of love you deserve, the kind of attention you should chase because it's all you've ever known but it's wrong, all of it is. you don't deserve to believe that you need to have people that shatter you to feel alive. you don't deserve that kind of broken love. you deserve sad songs with happy endings. you deserve the deepest love, someone who'll look at you and echo your name forever. ~ Himanshu Kohli
Sad Songs quotes by Himanshu Kohli
Most people like the sad songs. Some of the oldest songs known to man are sad. Listening to a voice singing something sad is a really great way to help you to feel sad when you need to. ~ Patty Griffin
Sad Songs quotes by Patty Griffin
Everyone is looking for connections between the songs. I don't usually approach a record as a concept. There's no overriding theme I'm trying to represent. It's all about the individual songs. ~ Tracy Chapman
Sad Songs quotes by Tracy Chapman
I really don't want a compilation of sounds. I just need them to be songs. ~ Taylor Swift
Sad Songs quotes by Taylor Swift
Some people go through life searching and never find their soul mates. They never do. You and I did, we just happened to have them for a shorter period of time than we hoped for. It's sad, but it's life. So you go to this ball, Holly and you embrace the fact that you had someone whom you loved and who loved you back. ~ Cecelia Ahern
Sad Songs quotes by Cecelia Ahern
It's hard to answer the question "what's wrong?" when nothing is right. ~ Anonymous
Sad Songs quotes by Anonymous
I may play the same songs night to night, but I never play them the same way. ~ Dick Dale
Sad Songs quotes by Dick Dale
You don't have to be positive all the time. It's perfectly okay to feel sad, angry, annoyed, frustrated, scared, or anxious. Having feelings doesn't make you a 'negative person.' It makes you human. ~ Lori Deschene
Sad Songs quotes by Lori Deschene
He ended, and his words impression leftOf much amazement to th' infernal crew,Distracted and surpris'd with deep dismayAt these sad tidings.Milton'sParadise Regained,b. i.3. ~ Samuel Johnson
Sad Songs quotes by Samuel Johnson
Inside the narrow skull of the miner pinned beneath the fallen timber, there lives a world. Parents, friends, a home, the hot soup of evening, songs sung on feast days, loving kindness and anger, perhaps even a social consciousness and a great universal love, inhabit that skull. By what are we to measure the value of a man? His ancestor once drew a reindeer on the wall of a cave; and two hundred thousand years later that gesture still radiates. It stirs us, prolongs itself in us. Man's gestures are an eternal spring. Though we [may] die for it, we shall bring up that miner from his shaft. Solitary he may be, universal he surely is. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Sad Songs quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
Many a brave smiling face hides a sad heart ~ Dorothy Scannell
Sad Songs quotes by Dorothy Scannell
She lifted her lantern high, and he allowed her to free him from the shadows, casting his face in warm, golden light. He had aged marvelously, grown into his long limbs and angled face. Penelope had always imagined that he'd become handsome, but he was more than handsome now... he was nearly beautiful.
If not for the darkness that lingered despite the glow of the lantern- something dangerous in the set of his jaw, in the tightness of his brow, in eyes that seemed to have forgotten joy, in lips that seemed to have lost their ability to smile.
He'd had a dimple as a child, one that showed itself often and was almost always the precursor to adventure. She searched his left cheek, looking for that telltale indentation. Did not find it.
Indeed, as much as Penelope searched this new, hard face, she could not seem to find the boy she'd once known. If not for the eyes, she would not have believed it was him at all.
"How sad," she whispered to herself.
He heard it. "What?"
She shook her head, meeting his gaze, the only thing familiar about him. "He's gone."
"Who?"
"My friend."
She hadn't thought it possible, but his features hardened even more, growing more stark, more dangerous, in the shadows. For one fleeting moment, she thought perhaps she had pushed him too far. He remained still, watching her with that dark gaze that seemed to see everything. ~ Sarah MacLean
Sad Songs quotes by Sarah MacLean
While you're singing something romantic, I can't get the lyrics to 'Love and Marriage' out of my head, and that tune always reminds me of the jingle from Jeopardy. ~ E.A. Bucchianeri
Sad Songs quotes by E.A. Bucchianeri
My father's songs don't intimidate me; my father's songs are my songs. My songs are his songs. There's no intimidation. ~ Ziggy Marley
Sad Songs quotes by Ziggy Marley
I've always written songs to use music as a form of therapy or as a way to look at my obstacles or my memories from a different perspective. It's always helped me realize the grass isn't always greener and how I need to live more in the moment. My songwriting is a documentation of whatever's happening in my life at that point in time. ~ Chuck Ragan
Sad Songs quotes by Chuck Ragan
In the '20s and '30s, there were these musicals either set on college campuses or based on classical stories, so any of the Rodgers and Hart musicals certainly influenced me. I was definitely influenced by any of the 'Porgy' songs; I was influenced by 'American Pie.' ~ Douglas Carter Beane
Sad Songs quotes by Douglas Carter Beane
I think that it is a part of growing up, learning to control our suffering. I think that when we grow up, and learn that happiness is rare, and passes quickly, we become disillusioned and hurt. And how much we suffer is a mark of how much we have been hurt by this realisation. Suffering, you see, is a kind of anger. We rage against the unfairness, the injustice of our sad and sorry lot. ~ Gregory David Roberts
Sad Songs quotes by Gregory David Roberts
But what do I care, for love will be over so soon,
Let my heart have its say and my mind stand idly by,
For my mind is proud and strong enough to be silent,
It is my heart that makes my songs, not I. ~ Sara Teasdale
Sad Songs quotes by Sara Teasdale
I had 25 or 30 songs. Sequencing the record, I left that to the producer. I'm not into doing that stuff. ~ Jules Shear
Sad Songs quotes by Jules Shear
Wine is a sign of happiness, love and plenty, how many of our adolescents and young people sense that these are no longer found in their homes? How many women, sad and lonely, wonder when love left, when it slipped away from their lives? How many elderly people feel left out of family celebrations, cast aside and longing each day for a little love? ~ Pope Francis
Sad Songs quotes by Pope Francis
I write songs for people who drive in cars. I really do. ~ Melissa Etheridge
Sad Songs quotes by Melissa Etheridge
As we walked, Jane whistled songs I didn't recognize. She was a good whistler and a fast walker, the squeak of her leg comforting, like the chug of a train or the whir of a fan, a piece of machinery doing its job. I liked following just behind her; she had such purpose to all of her moves. ~ Emily M. Danforth
Sad Songs quotes by Emily M. Danforth
There is the glamour side of it, which allows you to meet great variety of people with whom you simply can have a good time, but there's also the sad side of it that drags you into a superficial and artificial world. ~ Karolina Kurkova
Sad Songs quotes by Karolina Kurkova
THE FLECKS OF MY ENEMY'S BLOOD THAT STAIN THIS SUIT. THEY'RE MY PRIDE AND JOY.
"THIS SUIT LOOKS WHITE BECAUSE OF THE RED OF THE BLOOD ON IT." THAT'S WHY I FIGHT.
FOR YOU BIG BRO. THE AWSOMELY INSANE. TO MAKE YOU AWSOMELY HAPPY...
WHETHER AT AOGIRI OR AT GOAT, I'VE FOUGHT AT THE VERY FRONT LINES. ALL THE WAY.
AND TOWARDS THE END, I EVEN LEARNED A FEW NEW WORDS. I HAD FUN. IF ONLY I HAD KNOWN A FEW MORE WORDS, I'D HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TALK TO YOU MORE, BIG BRO.
I THINK ABOUT THAT SOMETIMES. I DON'T THINK JUST LIVING IS THAT BIG OF A DEAL. I REALLY BELIEVE I'LL BE ABLE TO SEE YOU IF I DIE.
SO I'M NOT SCARED. DEATH ISN'T THAT BAD. I HATE THE FACT THAT I LOST, THOUGH
BUT YOU KNOW, BRO. I... I'M NOT SAD AT ALL.

NAKI ~ Sui Ishida
Sad Songs quotes by Sui Ishida
And she learned that you couldn't stockpile anything that mattered, really. Feelings, people, songs, sex, fireworks: they existed only in time, and when it was over, so were they. ~ Garth Risk Hallberg
Sad Songs quotes by Garth Risk Hallberg
Well first of all, I'm a singer. I sing since I talk. So the great ballad singers, the people that sang with so much feeling, jazz, blues, all those singers, they were songs that I listened to, records that my mom played for me, and then later I bought. ~ Gloria Estefan
Sad Songs quotes by Gloria Estefan
In a society so estranged from animals as ours, we often fail to credit them with any form of language. If we do, it comes under the heading of communication rather than speech. And yet, the great silence we have imposed on the rest of life contains innumerable forms of expression. Where does our own language come from but this unfathomed store that characterizes innumerable species?
We are now more than halfway removed from what the unwritten word meant to our ancestors, who believed in the original, primal word behind all manifestations of the spirit. You sang because you were answered. The answers come from life around you. Prayers, chants, and songs were also responses to the elements, to the wind, the sun and stars, the Great Mystery behind them. Life on earth springs from a collateral magic that we rarely consult. We avoid the unknown as if we were afraid that contact would lower our sense of self-esteem. ~ John Hay
Sad Songs quotes by John Hay
Is that Rococo, Pascal?" Chrissie said as she stood by the missus's desk, peering into the nests of pigeonholes and cubbies. "Oh, don't touch there or you'll be shot," Pascal said, because it was where the missus kept her souvenirs, love letters from men before him, locks of hair, dried shamrock, and the words of songs that she rehearsed for her parties. Her family was musical, ~ Edna O'Brien
Sad Songs quotes by Edna O'Brien
Music is my first love and the thing that I feel extremely connected to. I feel like I still have a long way to go within that in terms of being able to perform and write songs. But, yeah, I really hope 'The Possession' opens doors for me to do more acting, because I really enjoyed it. ~ Matisyahu
Sad Songs quotes by Matisyahu
It's strange," Moominmamma thought. "Strange that people can be sad, and even angry because life is too easy. But that's the way it is, I suppose. The only thing to do is to start life afresh. ~ Tove Jansson
Sad Songs quotes by Tove Jansson
the sad fact is that we would rather be distracted than disturbed. But ~ Tom Shadyac
Sad Songs quotes by Tom Shadyac
I mostly play old period songs, as they suit a ukulele more. I bought it when I saw the tribute concert to George Harrison. Joe Brown came on and sang 'I'll See You In My Dreams,' and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. ~ Charles Dance
Sad Songs quotes by Charles Dance
Blessed - lucky - are those who cry. Blessed are those who are sad, who mourn, who feel the loss of what they love - because they will be held by the One who loves them. There is a strange and aching happiness only the hurting know - for they shall be held. ~ Ann Voskamp
Sad Songs quotes by Ann Voskamp
For centuries poets, some poets, have tried to give a voice to the animals, and readers, some readers, have felt empathy and sorrow. If animals did have voices, and they could speak with the tongues of angels--at the very least with the tongues of angels--they would be unable to save themselves from us. What good would language do? Their mysterious otherness has not saved them, nor have their beautiful songs and coats and skins and shells and eyes. We discover the remarkable intelligence of the whale, the wolf, the elephant--it does not save them, nor does our awareness of the complexity of their lives. Their strength, their skills, their swiftness, the beauty of their flights. It matters not, it seems, whether they are large or small, proud or shy, docile or fierce, wild or domesticated, whether they nurse their young or brood patiently on eggs. If they eat meat, we decry their viciousness; if they eat grasses and seeds, we dismiss them as weak. There is not one of them, not even the songbird who cannot, who does not, conflict with man and his perceived needs and desires. St. Francis converted the wolf of Gubbio to reason, but he performed this miracle only once and as miracles go, it didn't seem to capture the public's fancy. Humans don't want animals to reason with them. It would be a disturbing, unnerving, diminishing experience; it would bring about all manner of awkwardness and guilt. ~ Joy Williams
Sad Songs quotes by Joy Williams
On a lighter but serious side I believe that homework was meant for parents to take a keen interest in the studies of children rather than leave it completely for the teacher.
