I don't take compliments so well. I always hang my head and shuffle and kind of try to immediately forget. ~ Laurie Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Anderson
You know, I can see two tiny pictures of myself And there's one in each of your eyes. And they're doin' everything I do. Every time I light a cigarette, they light up theirs. I take a drink and I look in and they're drinkin' too. It's drivin' me crazy. It's drivin' me nuts. ~ Laurie Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Anderson
Now death is death! and yet is not one death Another death? Stabbing is not the same As shooting! Would you say a strangled man Was drown'd? The end is one, the means are many, And there the difference lies! ~ Victoria Laurie
Laurie quotes by Victoria Laurie
When you see that sunset or that panoramic view of God's finest expressed in nature, and the beauty just takes your breath away, remember it is just a glimpse of the real thing that awaits you in heaven. ~ Greg Laurie
Laurie quotes by Greg Laurie
People talk about nightfall, or night falling, or dusk falling, and it's never seemed right to me. Perhaps they once meant befalling. As in night befalls. As in night happens. Perhaps they, whoever they were, thought of a falling sun. That might be it, except that that ought to give us dayfall. Day fell on Rupert the Bear. And we know, if we've ever read a book, that day doesn't fall or rise. It breaks. In books, day breaks, and night falls.
In life, night rises from the ground. The day hangs on for as long as it can, bright and eager, absolutely and positively the last guest to leave the party, while the ground darkens, oozing night around your ankles, swallowing for ever that dropped contact lens, making you miss that low catch in the gully on the last ball of the last over. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
The best way to eat crabs, as everyone knows, is off newspaper at a large table with a large number of people. ~ Laurie Colwin
Laurie quotes by Laurie Colwin
Be where you are right now. Live your life. You are only hurting your chances by struggling so ... ~ Laurie Viera Rigler
Laurie quotes by Laurie Viera Rigler
God forbid the wife should have prior knowledge of sex, let alone enjoy it. ~ Laurie Viera Rigler
Laurie quotes by Laurie Viera Rigler
As a kid, I was always listening to music. I would just go in to my room and put on an album, read the lyrics, and just spend hours and hours in there. Plus, my sister Laurie played piano (in fact she taught me my first few notes) so music was always around one way or another. ~ Andrew Hollander
Laurie quotes by Andrew Hollander
A shy kid might look longingly at other kids playing in the schoolyard, afraid and unsure about how to approach them, but an introvert is perfectly content on her own. ~ Laurie Helgoe
Laurie quotes by Laurie Helgoe
Am I the only one who secretly hopes that the Curiosity rover will be swallowed up by a giant alien worm living just below Mars's surface? ~ Victoria Laurie
Laurie quotes by Victoria Laurie
The part of your mind that believes intuitive knowing to be impossible is that part of your mind for which it is impossible. ~ Laurie Nadel
Laurie quotes by Laurie Nadel
But see, that's the thing about movies. Nothing is left to the imagination. You read a book, and you see a picture of the characters and the scenes in your mind. You don't have that with a movie. It's all either up there on the screen laid out for you, or it isn't there at all. ~ Laurie Viera Rigler
Laurie quotes by Laurie Viera Rigler
Start locally and build. Start small and grow. Start in your house, then move to your school, your book club, your gym, your church, your temple, your city. ~ Laurie David
Laurie quotes by Laurie David
That last winter was a tragic story and I got no personal honour out of it but I was a witness to it. ~ Laurie Lee
Laurie quotes by Laurie Lee
Thus freedom now so seldom wakes, The only throb she gives, Is when some heart indignant breaks, To show that still she lives. THOMAS MOORE ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
Nicely, thank you, Mr. Laurence. But I am not Miss March, I'm only Jo," returned the young lady.
"I'm not Mr. Laurence, I'm only Laurie."
"Laurie Laurence, what an odd name."
"My first name is Theodore, but I don't like it, for the fellows called me Dora, so I made them say Laurie instead."
"I hate my name, too, so sentimental! I wish every one would say Jo instead of Josephine. How did you make the boys stop calling you Dora?"
"I thrashed 'em."
"I can't thrash Aunt March, so I suppose I shall have to bear it." And Jo resigned herself with a sigh ~ Louisa May Alcott
Laurie quotes by Louisa May Alcott
I have been challenged by the concept of meditation ... I decided recently to accept the invitation of a friend to experience the sheer silence of meditation-undirected prayer ... I had before only sensed intellectually ... But by going deep into prayer I could almost feel it. ~ Laurie Beth Jones
Laurie quotes by Laurie Beth Jones
I'm a bit of a scaredy cat. Personally, I don't like to be kept up at night. ~ Laurie Holden
Laurie quotes by Laurie Holden
To be a head boy, you have to be very clever, you have to be a scholar, and I was never a scholar in any shape or form. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
She laid land mines in my skill that detonated weeks later. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
There's no point in asking why, even though everybody will. I know why. The harder question is "why not?" I can't believe she ran out of answers before I did. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
My go-to author for knowing it all is Evelyn Waugh. 'A Handful of Dust' is as perfect as a book can get. ~ Laurie Graham
Laurie quotes by Laurie Graham
Any work that is really great hovers between terrific and terrible. ~ Laurie Simmons
Laurie quotes by Laurie Simmons
How lucky, I thought, were people who had known from earliest childhood what they wanted to do. All the children in my grammar school, who said they wanted to be doctors, had grown up to become doctors. This was also the case apparently with firemen, veterinarians, songwriters, and race car drivers.
I had opted for a kind of pure experience, which, as Doo-Wah had pointed out, is not usually something you get paid for. I did not want to write a book about it. I did not want to write so much as an article. I wanted to be left alone with my experience and go on to the next thing, whatever that was. ~ Laurie Colwin
Laurie quotes by Laurie Colwin
Laurie thought the task of forgetting his love for Jo would absorb all his powers for years; but, to his surprise, he discovered it grew easier every day. He refused to believe it at first,--got angry with himself, and couldn't understand it; but these hearts of ours are curious and contrary things, and time and nature work their will in spite of us. Laurie's heart wouldn't ache; the wound persisted in healing with a rapidity that astonished him, and, instead of trying to forget, he found himself trying to remember. ~ Louisa May Alcott
Laurie quotes by Louisa May Alcott
Doing something for the mere joy of it - for one's self or others - is quite possibly one of the best returns on an investment of time that a person can receive. ~ Laurie Buchanan
Laurie quotes by Laurie Buchanan
The first item was fighting under the name 'Crostini of Mealed Tarroce, with Benatore Potatoes' and weighed in at an impressive twelve pounds sixty-five. The Ralph Lauren blonde came over and asked me if I needed any help with the menu, and I asked her to explain what potatoes were. She didn't laugh. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
I wanted to communicate what I had seen, so that others could see it. ~ Laurie Lee
Laurie quotes by Laurie Lee
This, however, is OKCupid, the vast, weird pink-and-blue toned jungle of the id masquerading as a dating site, where rare birds of modern romance flutter amongst the night-terrors of human loneliness and despair and the suspicious skin irritants of late-night hook-uppery. ~ Laurie Penny
Laurie quotes by Laurie Penny
Poor Holly. There she was, completely unaware while millions of minute mucus particles, each carrying the flu virus, exploded into the air like rain. It was their germ mission to land on her and try to find their way into an opening of her body, much like a date I once had attempted with me. ~ Laurie Notaro
Laurie quotes by Laurie Notaro
It's a shame we can't just admit that we failed family living, sell the house, split up the money, and get on with our lives. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
In 1982 President Ronald Reagan called for a war on drugs: by 1990 more men were in federal prisons on drug charges alone than had comprised the entire 1980 federal prison population for all crimes combined. ~ Laurie Garrett
Laurie quotes by Laurie Garrett
Books are to me as homemade tattoos are to an inmate. Can't get enough of them. ~ Laurie Notaro
Laurie quotes by Laurie Notaro
AMY'S LECTURE DID Laurie good, though, of course, he did not own it till long afterward. Men seldom do, for when women are the advisers, the lords of creation don't take the advice till they have persuaded themselves that it is just what they intended to do. Then they act upon it, and, if it succeeds, they give the weaker vessel half the credit of it. ~ Louisa May Alcott
Laurie quotes by Louisa May Alcott
I majored in journalism at Arizona State University, where I began writing the columns I write now, but I cannot, in good conscience, refer to myself as a writer. I'm a columnist, maybe a journalist, I guess I'm an author, but writer ... no. That's not up to me to call myself, that's rather lofty. It's for the reader to decide. ~ Laurie Notaro
Laurie quotes by Laurie Notaro
You have to help him see that if he's disappearing from the world, that's too high a price to pay for fitting in. He has to see how 'You shouldn't push even though you want to' isn't the same as 'You shouldn't wear a dress even though you want to. ~ Laurie Frankel
Laurie quotes by Laurie Frankel
There's nothing more useless than a mind filled with someone else's thoughts. ~ Laurie Gray
Laurie quotes by Laurie Gray
Write about the emotions you fear the most. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
We know that without food we would die. Without fellowship, life is not worth living. ~ Laurie Colwin
Laurie quotes by Laurie Colwin
He doesn't see my breasts or my waist or my hips. He only sees the nightmare. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
I believe the first story I ever wrote was about a young girl who was terribly mistreated by her very cruel parents, and one day the girl fled to the woods to live amongst a pack of wolves. Hey, I was eleven, loved wolves, and had been grounded for what I felt was a minor infraction. Can you blame me? ~ Victoria Laurie
Laurie quotes by Victoria Laurie
And I was fairly certain that my strong-enough-for-King-Kong-but-made-for-a-woman deodorant had utterly failed.
Doom with a View ~ Victoria Laurie
Laurie quotes by Victoria Laurie
The next time the devil tempts you to think that you are not worthy to approach God, here is what I advise: Agree. Say, You are right. I am not worthy to approach God. I never was worthy to approach God. I never will be worthy to approach God. My access to God's presence is not based on my worthiness, it is based on what Christ did for me on the cross. ~ Greg Laurie
Laurie quotes by Greg Laurie
God's codpiece, you're very kind ~ Laurie Lee
Laurie quotes by Laurie Lee
I'm an average enough person to point to the things I've gotten to see that are awe-inspiring. ~ Laurie Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Anderson
People who are adept in healthy self-expression exercise front-end consideration before speaking. ~ Laurie Buchanan
Laurie quotes by Laurie Buchanan
Muddy Waters, I suppose, was my first great hero. You know, every boy wants to be a guitar player, and Muddy Waters was just the king. He was the King Bee. He was it. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
Nothing frustrates me so much as watching young women at the start of their lives wasting years in succession on lacklustre, unappreciative, boring child-men who were only ever looking for a magic girl to show off to their friends, a girl who would in private be both surrogate mother and sex partner. I've been that girl. It's no fun being that girl. That girl doesn't get to have the kind of adventures you really ought to be having in your teens and twenties. It's not that her dreams and plans don't matter, but they always matter slightly less than the boy's, because that's what boys are taught to expect - that their girlfriend is there to play a supporting role in their life. ~ Laurie Penny
Laurie quotes by Laurie Penny
Belief in oneself is a crucial quality of leadership, because 'a house divided against itself cannot stand.' A leader who fluctuates back and forth sends a very wavery signal. Like the soprano who can shatter glass by finding that high note and holding it, a leader who can hold that high note, without wavering, can shatter walls. ~ Laurie Beth Jones
Laurie quotes by Laurie Beth Jones
I think a lot of people in Washington are extremely suspicious of NASA. ~ Laurie Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Anderson
And Laurie looks exactly the same, but I'm kind of hazy, and my brain wants to substitute Daniel Craig, and what the fuck kind of fantasy is this, where I'm played - in my own head - by somebody else? ~ Alexis Hall
Laurie quotes by Alexis Hall
I have to rely on Laurie to know that I wish he had been with me the last time I was on the roof. I have to trust that he knows I'm glad that I stayed. ~ David Levithan
Laurie quotes by David Levithan
Buddha had said to make a light of yourself, and if Laurie had anything to say about it, one day he'd glow. ~ Christopher Barzak
Laurie quotes by Christopher Barzak
To tell you the truth, the older I get, the less I know. I keep meeting people, both older and younger, who seem to have accrued so much more knowledge or expertise or certainty about who they are and the jobs they do. I just marvel at it. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
It was like looking at a knot, knowing it was a knot, but not knowing how to untie it. I had no map for this life. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
My husband is stricken with dementia, and it's a trick of his condition that events and people from his past are more real to him than what happened five minutes ago. ~ Laurie Graham
Laurie quotes by Laurie Graham
I am getting better at smiling when people expect it. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
All of nature talks to me - if I could just figure out what it's saying - trees are swinging in the breeze. They're talking to me. Insects are rubbing their legs together. They're all talking. They're talking to me. ~ Laurie Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Anderson
Dr. Parker and all my parents live in a paper-mache world. They just patch up problems with strips of newspaper and a little glue. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
Sounds like you've got it all planned out."
"Honey, I've got more plans than Wes has ugly shoes."
"And that's a lot." I laugh.
"It sure is," she says with a sigh. ~ Laurie Faria Stolarz
Laurie quotes by Laurie Faria Stolarz
Without equity, pandemic battles will fail. Viruses will simply recirculate, and perhaps undergo mutations or changes that render vaccines useless, passing through the unprotected populations of the planet. ~ Laurie Garrett
Laurie quotes by Laurie Garrett
Without (my wife) Laurie, I would never be here right now, I know that. I would either be in a coffin, or stashed away doing a life sentence some place. Or running and hiding some place, if I was still alive. I'm certain I wouldn't be playing music. She's just been perfect for me. And she's a protector also; she protects me from myself, from temptations, and bad associations. She's constantly shielding me from walking the red hot coals of existing as a game. ~ Art Pepper
Laurie quotes by Art Pepper
Now, my mom always said two wrongs don't make a right. But she never said anything about four wrongs, and that always left me confused. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
The sharing of food is the basis of social life. ~ Laurie Colwin
Laurie quotes by Laurie Colwin
We want different things. Men want to have sex with a woman. Then they want to have sex with another woman. And then another. Then they want to eat cornflakes and sleep for a while, and then they want to have sex with another woman, and another, until they die. Women,' and I thought I'd better pick my words carefully when describing a gender I didn't belong to, 'want a relationship. They may not get it, or they may sleep with a lot of men before they do get it, but ultimately that's what they want. That's the goal. Men do not have goals. Natural ones. So they invent them, and put them at either end of a football pitch. And then they invent football. Or they pick fights, or try and get rich, or start wars, or come up with any number of daft bloody things to make up for the fact that they have no real goals.'
'Bollocks,' said Ronnie.
'That, of course, is the other main difference. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
It is impossible to fully and fairly understand introversion without looking inside. We aren't just going away, we're going toward something. ~ Laurie A. Helgoe
Laurie quotes by Laurie A. Helgoe
Having a vote once every four years is not the same thing as democracy. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
Russian vodka is OK if you need to clean the oven. For drinking, it must henceforth be Polish. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
Were she not aware that he was more than a man who could make plants grow. And ~ Laurie R. King
Laurie quotes by Laurie R. King
Because I am still a little girl who believes in Santa and the tooth fairy and you. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
These days any planned thing looked good to me. What heaven to have your work cut out for you, to be part of the Big Picture
a picture you did not have to paint yourself. ~ Laurie Colwin
Laurie quotes by Laurie Colwin
Tonight, however, all I can think of is the juxtaposition of destiny and free will, and whether it makes no difference what I do, or all the difference in the world. ~ Laurie Viera Rigler
Laurie quotes by Laurie Viera Rigler
Success on a cosmic level completely eludes me. I'm deeply suspicious of things being too good. It's part of my superstition, I think, to generate pain in order to give the illusion of gain. I'm not saying I reject success, but honestly, I don't quite know how to deal with it. It's an old feeling: As soon as you have the thing you've been going after all your life, that reasonable degree of security, you start kicking against it, doubting it. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
Note: 'family' does NOT only mean a biological unit composed of people who share genetic markers or legal bonds, headed by a heterosexual-mated pair. Family is much, much more than that. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
I open a paperclip and scratch it across the inside of my left wrist. Pitiful. If a suicide attempt is a cry for help, then what is this. A whimper, a peep? I draw little window cracks of blood, etching line after line until it stops hurting. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
the false innocence
you render for them
by censoring truth
protects only you ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
But if you made yourself up, you got to be exactly who you knew yourself to be. ~ Laurie Frankel
Laurie quotes by Laurie Frankel
The same boys who got detention in elementary school for beating the crap out of people are now rewarded for it. They call it football. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
It's a well-known fact that black sheep should never have lambs. You know what you get when you take a black sheep and give it a lamb? You get a thing called "supervised visitation" that's what. ~ Laurie Notaro
Laurie quotes by Laurie Notaro
He who rejects the Bible has nothing to live by. Neither does he have anything to die by. ~ Greg Laurie
Laurie quotes by Greg Laurie
I don't believe in God, but I have this idea that if there were a God, or destiny of some kind looking down on us, that if he saw you taking anything for granted he'd take it away. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
The strange thing - and this is one of the advantages of being incredibly shallow and superficial - is that wherever I am, that's sort of home. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
You were placed on earth to know God. Everything else is secondary. ~ Greg Laurie
Laurie quotes by Greg Laurie
too. I mean, I was fucking with my brother. He was my first at everything. My first kiss. He ate my pussy first and popped my cherry," Laurie knew what she was saying was harsh, but it was true and she wanted Dena to know about it. ~ Aleta L. Williams
Laurie quotes by Aleta L. Williams
Someday I want to go back to San Felipe de Jesus and find the Jesus in that place. Someday I want to trap myself in those washboard towns, Aconchi, Magdalena; I want to meet their saints someday. I would ask them if they have ever been in love.

I don't mean the syrup they lay on you in the media. I mean the meat of love, the hardness of it, the ice water that wakes you up into the heat of day. The Mexico of love, with rocks, pickup trucks, fat men and sugary children. Cock-sure, moonlit tequila, sweet lime, metallic bed for secret touching. Did they ever reach that side of life? Those mealy saints with their crosses on their backs, did they have enough stomach for the midnight lunch of love? ~ Laurie Perez
Laurie quotes by Laurie Perez
I can't tell anymore when I'm asleep and when I'm awake, or which is worse. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
I think that's the lesson you learn in life. As you get older you realize you're never going to grow up and you're never going to be ready. And you may, as well, do things now, don't wait ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
None of [the books are] worth reading. There are no fairy tales, no faerie tails, no sword-swinging princesses or lightning-throwing gods. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
It's a good thing people's needs don't all arise at the same time; otherwise we wouldn't be able to meet them all. ~ Laurie Frankel
Laurie quotes by Laurie Frankel
One may have a blazing hearth in one's soul, and yet no one ever comes to sit by it. - Vincent Van Gogh ~ Laurie A. Helgoe
Laurie quotes by Laurie A. Helgoe
Unbelievers are not the enemy - they are people for whom Christ died. We need to remember we were each one of them once. ~ Greg Laurie
Laurie quotes by Greg Laurie
I am almost a real girl the entire drive home. I went to a diner. I drank hot chocolate and ate french fries. Talked to a guy for a while. Laughed a couple of times. A little like ice-skating for the first time, wobbly, but I did it. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
He loves me so he hurts me
To try and make me good.
It doesn't work. I'm just too bad
And don't do what I should.

My memory has so many different sections and, like all survivors, there are so many compartments with so many triggers. I'll remember a smell which reminds me of a man which reminds me of a place which reminds me of another man who I think was with a woman who had a certain smell - and I'm back to square one. This is the case for most survivors, I believe. When we try to put together our pasts, the triggers are many and varied, the memories are disjointed - and why wouldn't they be? We were children. Even someone with an idyllic childhood who is only trying to remember the lovely things which happened to them will scratch their head and wonder who gave them that doll and was it for Christmas or their third birthday? Did they have a party when they were four or five? When did they go on a plane for the first time? You see, even happy memories are hard to piece together - so imagine how hard it is to collate all of the trauma, to pull together all of the things I've been trying to push away for so many years. ~ Laurie Matthew
Laurie quotes by Laurie Matthew
I believe that the purpose of death is the release of love. ~ Laurie Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Anderson
I looked at her and sighed. In another world, I thought to myself, it might have worked. In another world, in another universe, in another time, as two quite different people, we really might have been able to put all of this behind us, take off to some sun-drenched Caribbean island, and have sex and pineapple juice, non-stop, for a year. ~ Hugh Laurie
Laurie quotes by Hugh Laurie
I could have spent my time hugging you or I could have spent my time telling you not to touch hot stoves or take candy from men. Which did you want? ~ Laurie Notaro
Laurie quotes by Laurie Notaro
Religion's greatest "sin" lies in displacing human endeavor, thought, time, resources and efforts from this world, our only world, in order to exalt a highly unlikely, unknowable, unseeable, unprovable and unbelievable pretend afterworld. The only afterlife that ought to concern us is leaving our descendants (along with the other animals and life we share our planet with) a secure and pleasant future. ~ Annie Laurie Gaylor
Laurie quotes by Annie Laurie Gaylor
Ah, but it wasn't all right, and Jo did mind, for while the curly head lay on her arm a minute after her hard answer, she felt as if she had stabbed her dearest friend, and when he left her without a look behind him, she knew that the boy Laurie never would come again. ~ Louisa May Alcott
Laurie quotes by Louisa May Alcott
Fracture lines etch the surface of the glass box as if a body fell from the sky and landed on it. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
