Take away the newspaper - and this country of ours would become a scene of chaos. Without daily assurance of the exact facts - so far as we are able to know and publish them - the public imagination would run riot. Ten days without the daily newspaper and the strong pressure of worry and fear would throw the people of this country into mob hysteria - feeding upon rumors, alarms, terrified by bugbears and illusions. We have become the watchmen of the night and of a troubled day ... ~ Harry Chandler
Alarms quotes by Harry Chandler
What were all the world's alarms To mighty Paris when he found Sleep upon a golden bed That first dawn in Helen's arms? ~ William Butler Yeats
Alarms quotes by William Butler Yeats
When the alarm bell rings, you'd better wake up and realize that the customer expects more from you today than he did the day before. You'd better find ways to be better. ~ Gary L. Tooker
Alarms quotes by Gary L. Tooker
It was an impressive achievement, of course, and a human achievement by the members of the IBM team, but Deep Blue was only intelligent the way your programmable alarm clock is intelligent. Not that losing to a $10 million alarm clock made me feel any better. ~ Garry Kasparov
Alarms quotes by Garry Kasparov
You must not be alone; for to be alone is to be full of fears amd alarms. ~ Bram Stoker
Alarms quotes by Bram Stoker
By any rights, he should be dead. He was involved in an explosion with a bomb, which he happened to be carrying at the time. Conrad is something of a scientific miracle. There are more than thirty metal pins in his body. He has a metal plate in his skull. There are metal wires in his jaw and in most of his major joints."
"He must set off a lot of airport alarms," Alex muttered. ~ Anthony Horowitz
Alarms quotes by Anthony Horowitz
The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality. ~ Dante Alighieri
Alarms quotes by Dante Alighieri
The smoke alarm went off in the hallway upstairs, either to let us know the battery had just died or because the house was on fire. ~ Don DeLillo
Alarms quotes by Don DeLillo
I think my response to hearing that alarm would have been to grab an extinguisher and start fighting for my life, but over the past 21 years that instinct has been trained out of me and another set of responses has been trained in, represented by three words: warn, gather, work. "Working the problem" is NASA-speak for descending one decision tree after another, methodically looking for a solution until you run out of oxygen. We practice the "warn, gather, work" protocol for responding to fire alarms so frequently that it doesn't just become second nature; it actually supplants our natural instincts. ~ Chris Hadfield
Alarms quotes by Chris Hadfield
For in the first place the American people could not have been swept too fast and too far in this movement without enough alarms being sounded to be heard and heeded. ~ Robert W. Welch, Jr.
Alarms quotes by Robert W. Welch, Jr.
Enough of satire; in less harden'd times
Great was her force, and mighty were her rhymes.
I've read of men, beyond man's daring brave,
Who yet have trembled at the strokes she gave;
Whose souls have felt more terrible alarms
From her one line, than from a world in arms. ~ Charles Churchill
Alarms quotes by Charles Churchill
Postal inspectors have been given advanced warning that Publishers Clearinghouse is sending packets of laundry detergent that could be mistaken for anthrax. Oh, good timing. What genius came up with this promotion? What's next - a ticking alarm clock? Let's put that in a box. ~ Jay Leno
Alarms quotes by Jay Leno
Winkie? Flesh flute? Tallywhacker? Baby maker? Quiver bone? Joystick? Fun stick? Lap rocket? Love muscle? Wedding tackle? One-eyed wonder weasel? Helmet head? Wang? Trouser snake? Giggle stick? Schlong? Mushroom head? Love rod? Pecker? Thundersw - "
"Enough!" Lucian barked, and when Bricker paused and glanced to him questioningly, he said, "I do not know what alarms me more, that you have so many names for cock or what it means in regard to how much time you spend thinking about cock. ~ Lynsay Sands
Alarms quotes by Lynsay Sands
We had no one else to learn this from- none of our parents were shining examples of relationship success- so we learned this from each other: when someone you love needs you to, you can get a hold of your five-alarm temper, get a hold of the shapeless things that scare you senseless, act like an adult instead of the Cro-Magnon teenager you are, you can do a million things you never saw coming. ~ Tana French
Alarms quotes by Tana French
There's gonna be a lot of slow singing and flower bringing
If my burglar alarm starts ringing ~ The Notorious B.I.G.
Alarms quotes by The Notorious B.I.G.
Broken glass showered from the windows. Chunks of the walls bounced off the pavement and the cars parked along the curb, crushing into smaller pieces. The asphalt on the street split in places into long ribbon-like slashes. The ground continued rolling like the deck of a ship. The noise of the destruction, screams of terrified people, and the car alarms mixed into a concerto of horror. ~ A.O. Peart
Alarms quotes by A.O. Peart
Morning comes whether you set the alarm or not. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Alarms quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
Everybody I hang with - the ranchers, the farmers, the cops, the teachers, the plumbers, everybody I hang with - they've got an alarm clock. They get up, they put their heart and their soul into being the very best that they can be. They want to be an asset to their families and their neighborhood. They want to be productive members of society. ~ Ted Nugent
Alarms quotes by Ted Nugent
What are the characters that I discern most clearly in the so-called Anglo-Saxon type of man? I may answer at once that two stickout above all others. One is his curious and apparently incurable incompetence
his congenital inability to do any difficult thing easily and well, whether it be isolating a bacillus or writing a sonata. The other is his astounding susceptibility to fears and alarms
in short, his hereditary cowardice ... There is no record in history of any Anglo-Saxon nation entering upon any great war without allies. ~ H.L. Mencken
Alarms quotes by H.L. Mencken
said, "We don't have an armored vehicle. Therefore we're pretty much limited to the doors and the windows." "Which will be wired for alarms." "Which will be redundant. They won't need a bell on the roof to tell them we're there." "Which is where, exactly? In a house with four remaining guards and two world-class killers? Who collectively outnumber us three to one? In a structure much easier to defend than attack?" "Assuming those questions were rhetorical, I think that's a fair summary. ~ Lee Child
Alarms quotes by Lee Child
Because there's a silent, shrugging, stoical acceptance of all the things in the world we can never be part of: shorts, swimming pools, strappy dresses, country walks, roller-skating, ra-ra skirts, vest tops, high heels, rope climbing, sitting on a high stool, walking past building sites, flirting, being kissed, feeling confident. And ever losing weight, ever. The idea of suggesting we don't have to be fat –that things could change –is the most distant and alien prospect of all. We're fat now and we'll be fat forever and we must never, ever mention it, and that is the end of it. It's like Harry Potter's Sorting Hat. We were pulled from the hat marked 'Fat' and that is what we must now remain, until we die. Fat is our race. Our species. Our mode. As a result, there is very little of the outside world –and very little of the year –we can enjoy. Summer is sweaty under self-conscious layers. On stormy days, wind flattens skirts against thighs, and alarms both us and, we think, onlookers and passers-by. Winter is the only time we feel truly comfortable: covered head to toe in jumpers, coats, boots and hat. I develop a crush on Father Christmas. If I married him, not only would I be expected to stay fat, but I'd look thin standing next to him, in comparison. Perspective would be my friend. We all dream of moving to Norway, or Alaska, where we could wear massive padded coats all the time, and never reveal an inch of flesh. When it rains, we're happiest of all. Then we can just stay ~ Caitlin Moran
Alarms quotes by Caitlin Moran
I'm going to get you a broken alarm clock so you'll get up in the morning. ~ Jack Osbourne
Alarms quotes by Jack Osbourne
Whoever pushes America's sex button must be prepared for sirens and alarms. Whatever else we do in our lives will be drowned out by them. ~ Erica Jong
Alarms quotes by Erica Jong
You will find the key to success under the alarm clock. ~ Benjamin Franklin
Alarms quotes by Benjamin Franklin
Dignity takes alarm at the unexpected sound of laughter. ~ Mason Cooley
Alarms quotes by Mason Cooley
I feel my disease, and I feel that my want of alarm and lively affecting conviction forms its most obstinate ingredient; I try to stir up the emotion, and feel myself harassed and distressed at the impotency of my own meditations. But why linger without the threshold in the face of a warm and urgent invitation? "Come unto me." Do not think it is your office to heal one part of the disease, and Christ's to heal the remainder. ~ Thomas Chalmers
Alarms quotes by Thomas Chalmers
Alice in Lapland. Any undue interest in or physical contact with children will set off alarms. If you do not want your reader to think he is reading about a pedophile, dandling of children on knees should be kept to a minimum by fathers, and even more so by uncles. If your character is in any way associated with organized religion, whether he is a bishop, a minister, or the kindly old church caretaker with a twinkle in his eye, he should not even pull a child from a burning building. ~ Howard Mittelmark
Alarms quotes by Howard Mittelmark
Home is among the holiest of words. A true home is one of the most sacred of places. It is a sanctuary into which men flee from the world's perils and alarms. It is a resting-place to which at close of day the weary retire to gather new strength for the battle and toils of tomorrow. It is the place where love learns its lessons, where life is schooled into discipline and strength, where character is molded. Out of the homes of a community comes the life of the community, as a river from the thousand springs that gush out on the hillsides." -J.R. Miller ~ June Fuentes
Alarms quotes by June Fuentes
A little alarm now and then keeps life from stagnation. ~ Fanny Burney
Alarms quotes by Fanny Burney
The silence in the giant redwood forest near my house draws me...At eight in the morning, the great trees stand rooted in a silence so absolute that one's inmost self comes to rest. An aged silence. Some mornings I sleep through two alarms and awaken only after the first buses have arrived. I go anyway. There are hundreds of people in the woods before me. People speaking French, German, Spanish; people marveling to each other and calling to their children in Japanese, Swedish, Russian, and some languages I do not know. And children shrieking in the universal language of childhood. But the silence is always there, unchanged. It is as impervious to these passing sounds as the trees themselves. ~ Rachel Naomi Remen
Alarms quotes by Rachel Naomi Remen
Temptation is a fearful word. It indicates the beginning of a possible series of infinite evils. It is the ringing of an alarm bell, whose melancholy sounds may reverberate through eternity. Like the sudden, sharp cry of "Fire!" under our windows by night, it should rouse us to instantaneous action, and brace every muscle to its highest tension. ~ Horace Mann
Alarms quotes by Horace Mann
Come on, you winefizzling, ginsizzling, booseguzzling existences! Come on, you dog-gone, bullnecked, beetlebrowed, hogjowled, peanutbrained, weaseleyed fourflushers, false alarms and excess baggage! Come on, you triple extract of infamy! Alexander J. Christ Dowie, that's yanked to glory most half this planet from 'Frisco Beach to Vladivostok. The Deity ain't no nickel dime bumshow. I put it to you that he's on the square and a corking fine business proposition. He's the grandest thing yet and don't you forget it. Shout salvation in king Jesus. You'll need to rise precious early, you sinner there, if you want to diddle the Almighty God. Pflaaaap! Not half. He's got a coughmixture with a punch in it for you, my friend, in his backpocket. Just you try it on. ~ James Joyce
Alarms quotes by James Joyce
What chiefly concerns and alarms many of us are the problems arising from religious fanaticism. As long as large numbers of militant enthusiasts are persuaded that they alone have access to the truth, and that the rest of us are infidels, we remain under threat. Lord Acton's famous phrase about power can be used of another danger. Dogma tends to corrupt, and absolute dogma corrupts absolutely. ~ Anthony Storr
Alarms quotes by Anthony Storr
Every disastrous accident alarms us, and sets us on enquiries concerning the principles whence it arose: Apprehensions spring up with regard to futurity: And the mind, sunk into diffidence, terror, and melancholy, has recourse to every method of appeasing those secret intelligent powers, on whom our fortune is supposed entirely to depend. ~ David Hume
Alarms quotes by David Hume
People went to bed when the sun went down and they woke up when the sun came up. That's what our bodies are naturally programmed to do. However, with all the new stresses in life with electricity, with technology, we tend to override that system and we'll stay up later and we'll get up earlier or later, and we use alarm clocks, we use the light. ~ Shelby Harris
Alarms quotes by Shelby Harris
Alarm stole over me on little kitten feet. ~ Faith Hunter
Alarms quotes by Faith Hunter
The canary bird in the coal mine theory of the arts: artists should be treasured as alarm systems. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Alarms quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
In some cases, however, a person will try to avoid taking responsibility by trying to avoid making conscious choices altogether. Perhaps she cites uncontrollable passion on her part ... the presence of peer pressure ... or she pretends not to notice the man's actions. Whatever the case, she acts as though she is not making any choices and hence has no responsibility for the consequences. ~ K.A. Linde
Alarms quotes by K.A. Linde
Every group, every system has a set of values and morals and when you get outside those, then the alarms ring. I was politically incorrect to 95% of the country; luckily my 5% had the bread to come see me. ~ Lenny Bruce
Alarms quotes by Lenny Bruce
I am exploiting the written word with the utmost ease. This alarms me, for I am afraid of losing my sense of order and of plunging into an abyss resounding with cries and shrieks: The Hell of human freedom. But I shall continue ~ Clarice Lispector
Alarms quotes by Clarice Lispector
cozy+smell of pancakes-alarm clock=weekend ~ Amy Krouse Rosenthal
Alarms quotes by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
I saw something stupid in the paper today. A new alarm clock that makes no noise. It's for people who don't like loud noises. Instead, it slowly hits you with light and gets brighter and brighter until you wake up. I already have one of those.. it's called a window. ~ Jay Leno
Alarms quotes by Jay Leno
Roger, we're go on that alarm ~ Charles Duke
Alarms quotes by Charles Duke
I once compiled a list of events that frightened her, and it was quite comprehensive: very loud snoring; low-flying aircraft; church bells; fire engines; trains; buses and lorries; thunder; shouting; large cars; most medium-sized cars; noisy small cars; burglar alarms; fireworks, especially crackers; loud radios; barking dogs; whinnying horses; nearby silent horses; cows in general; megaphones; sheep; corks coming out of sparkling wine bottles; motorcycles, even very small ones; balloons being popped; vacuum cleaners (not being used by her); things being dropped; dinner gongs; parrot houses; whoopee cushions; chiming doorbells; hammering; bombs; hooters; old-fashioned alarm clocks; pneumatic drills; and hairdryers (even those used by her). ~ John Cleese
Alarms quotes by John Cleese
His bike was lying against the curb, and he righted it, holding the handlebars. "What I do, I do out of hate, not humanity. Because punishing assholes gets me off - not saving victims. And actually all this . . ." He cast his gaze around us. "This isn't doing a fucking thing for me. So if you're not going to jump, I'd just as soon be home in bed."
Home. Well, there was one question answered.
Face burning, I shook my head. "No, I'm not jumping."
"Great." He slung a leg over his crossbar. Face utterly unchanged, the Badger drew his infamous Glock from inside his hoodie, took aim, and shot me in the thigh from five feet.
"Ow, Jesus!" White paint exploded across my favorite jeans, and a bolt of exquisite pain promised a welt.
"That's for wasting my time," he said, replacing the pistol. "I'm too fucking tired for false alarms, so next time have the decency to jump."
My slack mouth produced no words. I watched him glide away, silent and passive once more. As ever.
I glanced at my palm, streaked with white from where I'd grabbed my leg. Looked and felt just like when a bird shits on your hair. You pray it's a raindrop, but it never is.
Fuck you too, Badger. ~ C.M. McKenna
Alarms quotes by C.M. McKenna
But the demagogues and regional divisions that troubled Washington still afflicted the nation with 'ill-founded jealousies and false alarms,' spreading the flames of faction under the cover of pretend patriotism, fueled by a fundamental misreading of the Constitution. ~ John P. Avlon
Alarms quotes by John P. Avlon
There will be guards," Bast said. "And traps. And alarms. You can bet the house is heavily charmed to keep out gods."
"Magicians can do that?" I asked. I imagined a big can of pesticide labeled God-Away. ~ Rick Riordan
Alarms quotes by Rick Riordan
Come up when you're finished down here."
He raised a brow. "I don't have any alarms to check up there."
That sexy sparkle was back in her eyes. "Then I guess you'll just have to check me. ~ Lisa Kessler
Alarms quotes by Lisa Kessler
Unfortunately, I'm one of those idiots who knows everything about health and is in a constant state of alarm, and yet I continue to do everything I shouldn't do. ~ Jonathan Ames
Alarms quotes by Jonathan Ames
He wanted her closer, or so he had said. It put butterflies in her stomach as much as it put alarms in her head. ~ Elise Kova
Alarms quotes by Elise Kova
How long your closet held a whiff of you,
Long after hangers hung austere and bare.
I would walk in and suddenly the true
Sharp sweet sweat scent controlled the air
And life was in that small still living breath.
Where are you? since so much of you is here,
Your unique odour quite ignoring death.
My hands reach out to touch, to hold what's dear
And vital in my longing empty arms.
But other clothes fill up the space, your space,
And scent on scent send out strange false alarms.
Not of your odour there is not a trace.
But something unexpected still breaks through
The goneness to the presentness of you. ~ Madeleine L'Engle
Alarms quotes by Madeleine L'Engle
The trouble with an alarm clock is that what seems sensible when you set it seems absurd when it goes off ~ Rex Stout
Alarms quotes by Rex Stout
A built-in reminder is the simple understanding that whenever any kind of unhappiness arises, you know you've lost the now. That's a built-in alarm clock. The moment you realize you've lost the now, come back to the now. ~ Eckhart Tolle
Alarms quotes by Eckhart Tolle
What alarms me most is the fact that, even when God has now raised up a voice to speak on these issues, many sincerely believe that I am in error or at worst that I am doing something utterly wrong ~ Sunday Adelaja
Alarms quotes by Sunday Adelaja
I won't tell you how many hours a day I work because you wouldn't believe it. But don't worry; I am in bed at 11 p.m., sleep well and get up early, without an alarm clock. ~ Michel Ocelot
Alarms quotes by Michel Ocelot
He then said something in Arabic to Ali, who made a sign of obedience and withdrew, but not to any distance. As to Franz a strange transformation had taken place in him. All the bodily fatigue of the day, all the preoccupation of mind which the events of the evening had brought on, disappeared as they do at the first approach of sleep, when we are still sufficiently conscious to be aware of the coming of slumber. His body seemed to acquire an airy lightness, his perception brightened in a remarkable manner, his senses seemed to redouble their power, the horizon continued to expand; but it was not the gloomy horizon of vague alarms, and which he had seen before he slept, but a blue, transparent, unbounded horizon, with all the blue of the ocean, all the spangles of the sun, all the perfumes of the summer breeze; then, in the midst of the songs of his sailors, -- songs so clear and sonorous, that they would have made a divine harmony had their notes been taken down, -- he saw the Island of Monte Cristo, no longer as a threatening rock in the midst of the waves, but as an oasis in the desert; then, as his boat drew nearer, the songs became louder, for an enchanting and mysterious harmony rose to heaven, as if some Loreley had decreed to attract a soul thither, or Amphion, the enchanter, intended there to build a city.

At length the boat touched the shore, but without effort, without shock, as lips touch lips; and he entered the grotto amidst continued strains of most ~ Alexandre Dumas
Alarms quotes by Alexandre Dumas
Being Cassandra is a principled choice when there is cause for alarm. ~ Robin Morgan
Alarms quotes by Robin Morgan
Where every day doesn't start with an alarm clock and end with the television. ~ Chuck Palahniuk
Alarms quotes by Chuck Palahniuk
Disturbers are never popular - nobody ever really loved an alarm clock in action, no matter how grateful he may have been afterwards for its kind services! ~ Nellie L. McClung
Alarms quotes by Nellie L. McClung
It is not death, it is dying that alarms me. ~ Michel De Montaigne
Alarms quotes by Michel De Montaigne
Albert Camus wrote that the only serious question is whether to kill yourself or not.
Tom Robbins wrote that the only serious question is whether time has a beginning and an end.
Camus clearly got up on the wrong side of bed, and Robbins must have forgotten to set the alarm.
There is only one serious question. And that is: Who knows how to make love stay?
Answer me that and I will tell you whether or not to kill yourself. ~ Tom Robbins
Alarms quotes by Tom Robbins
Increase Mather, President of Harvard University, in his treatise on Remarkable Providences, insists that the smell of herbs alarms the Devil and that medicine expels him. Such beliefs have probably even now not wholly disappeared from among us. ~ James Henry Breasted
Alarms quotes by James Henry Breasted
A heart can learn ever so many tricks, and what sort of beast it becomes depends greatly upon whether it has been taught to sit up or to lie down, to speak or to beg, to roll over or to sound alarms, to guard or to attack, to find or to stay ~ Catherynne M Valente
Alarms quotes by Catherynne M Valente
The nights in Billancourt were soft and sweet, enlivened now and again by those childish airplane or zeppelin alarms which provided the civilian population with thrills and self-justification. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Alarms quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
I wake up at about the same time every day. I sleep well and wake without an alarm clock. ~ Donatella Versace
Alarms quotes by Donatella Versace
That feeling. That's the real difference in a life. People who live on solid ground, underneath safe skies, know nothing of this; they are like the English POWs in Dresden who continued to pour tea and dress for dinner, even as the alarms went off, even as the city became a towering ball of fire. Born of a green and pleasant land, a temperate land, the English have a basic inability to conceive of disaster, even when it is man-made. ~ Zadie Smith
Alarms quotes by Zadie Smith
The days, and the months, and the years, pass so swiftly, that I can no longer retain them. Time, in its flight, hurries me away, in spite of myself; in vain I endeavor to stop him, he drags me along: the thought of this alarms me. ~ Marie De Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise De Sevigne
Alarms quotes by Marie De Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise De Sevigne
If we were faultless we should not be so much annoyed by the defects of those with whom we associate. ~ Francois Fenelon
Alarms quotes by Francois Fenelon
Lesson #456 of high school life: Never, EVER trust an alarm clock. ~ Heather Brewer
Alarms quotes by Heather Brewer
Most of us, myself included, have forgotten what real darkness is like. We live in a world where light is inescapable. It comes from street lamps, headlights, security floodlights, and even the faint glow of our alarm clocks. ~ Jake Halpern
Alarms quotes by Jake Halpern
I like things that are simple, such as an alarm clock. ~ Martin Freeman
Alarms quotes by Martin Freeman
Smoking cigarettes seems to alarm peace activists much more than voting for Reagan does. ~ P. J. O'Rourke
Alarms quotes by P. J. O'Rourke
As a performer, I wanted to be the loudest, most persistent alarm clock I could be, because there didn't seem like any other way to snap society out of its Christianity- and media-induced coma. ~ Marilyn Manson
Alarms quotes by Marilyn Manson
Samuel Taylor Coleridge was right when he claimed, 'In politics, what begins in fear usually ends up in folly.' Political activists are more inclined, though, to heed an observation from Richard Nixon: 'People react to fear, not love. They don't teach that in Sunday school, but it's true.' That principle, which guided the late president's political strategy throughout his career, is the sine qua non of contemporary political campaigning. Marketers of products and services ranging from car alarms to TV news programs have taken it to heart as well.

The short answer to why Americans harbor so many misbegotten fears is that immense power and money await those who tap into our moral insecurities and supply us with symbolic substitutes. ~ Barry Glassner
Alarms quotes by Barry Glassner
As the poet has expected, the alarms now are sounded, for - and it must be said again - the birth of a poet is always a threat to the existing cultural order, because he attempts to break through the circle of literary castes to reach the center. ~ Salvatore Quasimodo
Alarms quotes by Salvatore Quasimodo
We've all got to worry some-but we can't let it conquer us. Instead, let it alarm us. ~ Jim Rohn
Alarms quotes by Jim Rohn
Guns discommode me. Their facility alarms me. Point and kill. Ruin someone's life. Remove at a finger pull deeply loved people, as important in their spheres as the sun in the sky. The very weight of a gun disturbs me-an insolent object, insisting on its own importance. ~ Frank Delaney
Alarms quotes by Frank Delaney
He realized that, despite the dangers and alarms of the day, waiting was perhaps the worst thing of all. ~ Dan Abnett
Alarms quotes by Dan Abnett
It alarms me to think of all that I have read and how little of it has stayed with me. ~ Hugh Laurie
Alarms quotes by Hugh Laurie
It's gonna be awesome! A suspected pedophile dunks my kids head in a bucket so when she dies she can live in an invisible castle. Set the alarm! ~ Dana Gould
Alarms quotes by Dana Gould
I read the signs,I got all my stars aligned,My amulets, my charms,I set all my false alarms,So I'll be someoneWho won't be forgotten. ~ St. Vincent
Alarms quotes by St. Vincent
Your alarm's about to go off in ten minutes," Caden called from the doorway. He had a cup of coffee in hand and wore only jeans.
I tried to keep my eyes front and center, but I lost. The tattoos were a nice little zig-zag pattern, pulling my gaze down, all the way down. Caden's slow, smooth chuckle told me he knew what I'd just done. My cheeks only warmed a little.
I shot him a look, falling back to the pillow. "I feel like this should be the first skip day of my school career."
"You've never skipped before?"
I shook my head, rolling it side to side on the pillow. "Am I missing out? Should I embrace my inner deviant?"
He smirked. "You can skip a class for any reason in the world. It's your life."
I sat up, eyeing that coffee. "You were supposed to be the bad influence."
His eyebrow lifted. "I'm not selling it enough?" He lifted his cup. "You want some coffee?"
"I'm wondering if today is the day I try coffee too."
"You've never had coffee?"
"I'm beginning to think I'm lame." I thought about it. "Really lame."
"You slept at some guy's house last night. Think of it that way." His smirk was back. "Not so lame now."
I could do one better. "I slept at a fraternity house."
"And you drank beer."
"It was the second night in a row that I drank beer."
"See? Not so lame after all."
"You're right." I sat up. "I'm halfway to total badass. ~ Tijan
Alarms quotes by Tijan
God incarnate is the end of fear; and the heart that realizes that, realizes that he is in the midst, that takes heed to the assurance of his loving presence, will be quiet in the midst of alarm. ~ F.B. Meyer
Alarms quotes by F.B. Meyer
The look of love alarms Because 'tis filled with fire; But the look of soft deceit Shall sin the lover's hire. ~ William Blake
Alarms quotes by William Blake
And as to you death, and you bitter hug of mortality ... it is idle to try to alarm me ~ Walt Whitman
Alarms quotes by Walt Whitman
Stress is an alarm clock that lets you know you're attached to something not true for you. ~ Byron Katie
Alarms quotes by Byron Katie
I wonder why men get serious at all. They have this delicate, long thing hanging outside their bodies which goes up and down by its own will. If I were a man I would always be laughing at myself. ~ Yoko Ono
Alarms quotes by Yoko Ono
You have to wait for good things to happen - wait and wait and work so hard - but bad things occur out of the blue, like fire alarms triggered in the dead of night, blaring randomly, a shock of sound, a chatter of current from which there is no turning back.
There's only the day that starts like any other, and when it ends, it leaves you shaken, wobbly, unsure of where you stand, the patch of ground that holds your feet dissolving, disintegrating from under you. Often there's a sign, a harbinger of what's to come. Sometimes there are many signs, like black crows scattered in the road, but they blend into the scenery on the path ahead. You can only spot them when you look back. ~ Gennifer Choldenko
Alarms quotes by Gennifer Choldenko
No Alarm Clock Needed. My Passion Wakes Me. ~ Eric Thomas
Alarms quotes by Eric Thomas
What really alarms me about President Bush's 'War on Terrorism' is the grammar. How do you wage war on an abstract noun? How is 'Terrorism' going to surrender? It's well known, in philological circles, that it's very hard for abstract nouns to surrender. ~ Terry Jones
Alarms quotes by Terry Jones
But now I speculate re the ants' invisible organ of aggregate thought... if, in a city park of broad reaches, winding paths, roadways, and lakes, you can imagine seeing on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon the random and unpredictable movement of great numbers of human beings in the same way... if you watch one person, one couple, one family, a child, you can assure yourself of the integrity of the individual will and not be able to divine what the next moment will bring. But when the masses are celebrating a beautiful day in the park in a prescribed circulation of activities, the wider lens of thought reveals nothing errant, nothing inconstant or unnatural to the occasion. And if someone acts in a mutant un-park manner, alarms go off, the unpredictable element, a purse snatcher, a gun wielder, is isolated, surrounded, ejected, carried off as waste. So that while we are individually and privately dyssynchronous, moving in different ways, for different purposes, in different directions, we may at the same time comprise, however blindly, the pulsing communicating cells of an urban over-brain. The intent of this organ is to enjoy an afternoon in the park, as each of us street-grimy urbanites loves to do. In the backs of our minds when we gather for such days, do we know this? How much of our desire to use the park depends on the desires of others to do the same? How much of the idea of a park is in the genetic invitation on nice days to reflect our massive neuromorphology? There ~ E.L. Doctorow
Alarms quotes by E.L. Doctorow
the theater is one of the few places left in the bright and noisy world where we sit in the quiet dark together, to be awake."

Ruhl, Sarah. 100 Essays I Don't Have Time to Write: On Umbrellas and Sword Fights, Parades and Dogs, Fire Alarms, Children, and Theater (p. 103). Faber & Faber. Kindle Edition. ~ Sarah Ruhl
Alarms quotes by Sarah Ruhl
Free is not how many of our citizens feel - with our overstocked medicine cabinets, burglar alarms, vast ghettos, and drug culture. Eighteen hundred New Yorkers are murdered every year by their fellow citizens in a city whose police department is larger than the standing army of many nations. The adventure went sour. ~ Stanley Hauerwas
Alarms quotes by Stanley Hauerwas
[The spirit of party] serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another. ~ George Washington
Alarms quotes by George Washington
Heredity and environment are funny things. You can't rid yourselves of all the odd ducks in just a few years. The home environment can undo a lot you try to do at school. That's why we've lowered the kindergarten age year after year until now we're almost snatching them from the cradle. We had some false alarms on the McClellans, when they lived in Chicago. Never found a book. Uncle had a mixed record; antisocial. The girl? She was a time bomb. The family had been feeding her subconscious, I'm sure, from what I saw of her school record. She didn't want to know how a thing was done, but why. That can be embarrassing. You ask Why to a lot of things and you wind up very unhappy indeed, if you keep at it. ~ Ray Bradbury
Alarms quotes by Ray Bradbury
A church can wither as surely under the ministry of soulless Bible exposition as it can where no Bible is given. To be effective the preacher's message must be alive; it must alarm, arouse, challenge; it must be God's present voice to a particular people. Then, and not till then, is it the prophetic word and the man himself a prophet. ~ Aiden Wilson Tozer
Alarms quotes by Aiden Wilson Tozer
I hate waking up every morning to my alarm. I always bang my head on the steering wheel. ~ Scott Wood
Alarms quotes by Scott Wood
Real philosophy is like trying to read an alarm system installation manual in Korean. ~ Chris Hardwick
Alarms quotes by Chris Hardwick
Solitude is a necessary protest to the incursions and the false alarms of society's hysteria, a period of cure and recovery. ~ Abraham Joshua Heschel
Alarms quotes by Abraham Joshua Heschel
The more sleep you get in before the clock turns midnight, the more rested you feel no matter what time your alarm goes off. ~ Summer Sanders
