He thought of the jungle, already regrowing around him to cover the scars they had created. He thought of the tiger, killing to eat. Was that evil? And ants? They killed. No, the jungle wasn't evil. It was indifferent. So, too, was the world. Evil, then, must be the negation of something man had added to the world. Ultimately, it was caring about something that made the world liable to evil. Caring. And then the caring gets torn asunder. Everybody dies, but not everybody cares. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
Without man there would be no evil. But there was also no good, nothing moral built over the world of fact. Humans were responsible for it all. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
The Marine Corps taught me how to kill, but it didn't teach me how to deal with killing. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
How could you get mad at someone who neither needed to attack nor was at all worried about being able to defend? It was like getting mad at Switzerland. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
Many will argue that there is nothing remotely spiritual in combat. Consider this. Mystical or religious experiences have four common components: constant awareness of one's own inevitable death, total focus on the present moment, the valuing of other people's lives above one's own, and being part of a larger religious community such as the Sangha, ummah, or church. All four of these exist in combat. The big difference is that the mystic sees heaven and the warrior sees hell. Whether combat is the dark side of the same version, or only something equivalent in intensity, I simply don't know. I do know that at the age of fifteen I had a mystical experience that scared the hell out of me and both it and combat put me into a different relationship with ordinary life and eternity.

Most of us, including me, would prefer to think of a sacred space as some light-filled wonderous place where we can feel good and find a way to shore up our psyches against death. We don't want to think that something as ugly and brutal as combat could be involved in any way with the spiritual. However, would any practicing Christian say that Calvary Hill was not a sacred space? ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
He knew that all of them were shadows: the chanters, the dead, the living. All shadows, moving across this landscape of mountains and valleys, changing the pattern of things as they moved but leaving nothing changed when they left. Only the shadows themselves could change. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
Vietnam was the first time that Americans of different races had to depend on each other. In the Second World War, they were segregated; it was in Vietnam that American integration happened in the military - and it wasn't easy. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
We have an idea of what is right or wrong. And we can debate moral issues as ideas. But moral *standards* are not ideas; they exist in the form of observable measurable behavior. What one sees, hears, and feels every day, by observing how people around one behave, inculcates such standards of behavior. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
We mistakenly assume that bodily survival has a higher precedence than ego survival. This is simply not generally true. Ego will happily destroy the body for its own sake. Look at overweight executives headed for heart attacks on the way to getting their pictures in Fortune or anorexic models suffering slow starvation on their way to getting their pictures in Vogue. Protecting ego is the general case. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
Over time, continual bad news will discourage any civilian population, and Americans had the lowest tolerance on the planet for bad news. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
Mellas knew that Hawke was letting him squirm. Then, without looking up, Hawke said, 'Look, Mellas, in the Navy or Air Force they give you a medal for what the Marines call just doing their job. In the Marines you only get a medal for being braver than just doing your job. Then he looked at Mellas. 'You get in fixes where medals are handed out because you were unlucky and had to fix things, or because you were stupid and had to fix things. Be carful what you're wishing for. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
The fourteen-man snake moved in spasms ... Their eyes flickered rapidly back and forth as they tried to look in all directions at once. They carried Kool-Aid packages, Tang - anything to kill the chemical taste of the water in their plastic canteens. Soon the smears of purple and orange Kool-Aid on their lips combined with the fear in their eyes to make them look like children returning from a birthday party at which the hostess had shown horror films. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
He ran as he'd never run before, with neither hope nor despair. He ran because the world was divided into opposites and his side had already been chosen for him, his only choice being whether or not to play his part with heart and courage. He ran because fate had placed him in a position of responsibility and he had accepted the burden. He ran because his self-respect required it. He ran because he loved his friends and this was the only thing he could do to end the madness that was killing and maiming them. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
It won't hurt you. It's just to kill plants. It's called Agent Orange ... and it won't bother humans. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
It is not trivial to lie in a report ... At the time I wrote it I actually believed what I wrote to be true, fervently ... Yet, when I wrote it, I also knew it wasn't true. I call this the lie of two minds.
"I" convinced "myself." The I that did the convincing was the one who needed desperately to justify the entire experience, to make it sane and right and okay and approved. Myself was convinced as the moral self, the part of me I would want to be a judge in a legal system. This moral part of us, however, in these extreme situations, is vulnerable to the overwhelming force of that part of us that needs to justify our actions ... With this lie I'd lost myself. Perhaps this too adds to the shame. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
I choose all over to keep believin'. All along I know Jesus could maybe be just come fairy tale, and I could be just one big fool. I choose anyway.' He turned away from his inward images and returned to the blackness of the world around him. 'It ain't no easy thing. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
Quitting is unthinkable and pain is just weakness leaving the body ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
I grew up in Oregon, where as a teenager I worked with my grandfather Axel on his i shing boat at the mouth of the Columbia River. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
I began writing 'Matterhorn' in 1975 and for more than 30 years I kept working on my novel in my spare time, unable to get an agent or publisher to even read the manuscript. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
Mellas continued to look at the wallet, saying nothing. Hawke, who had been watching Mellas through the steam that rose from his pear-can coffee mug, handed Mellas the cup. Mellas gave a brief smile and took a drink. His hand was shaking. Hawke said in a calm voice, 'Something happened. You want to talk about it?'

Mellas didn't answer right away. Then he said, 'I think I know where the gooks are.' He pulled out his map and pointed to the spot, his hand still trembling.

'How do you know that, Mel?' Hawke asked.

'From the direction he crawled after he was shot.' Mellas tossed the wallet down at Fitch. Then he dug into his pocket and pulled out the soldier's unit and rank patches. he looked at them, then at Fitch and Hawke, who were no longer eating. 'I let him crawl toward home with his guts hanging out.' He started sobbing. 'I just left him there.' Snot was streaming from his nose. 'I'm so sorry. I'm so fucking sorry.' His hands were now shaking with his body as he clenched the two pieces of cloth to his eyes. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
This nation should be less worried about putting the Vietnam syndrome behind us than restarting the World War II victory syndrome that resulted in the Vietnam syndrome in the first place. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
We all have shit on our shoes. We've just got to realize it so we don't track it into the house. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
'The Odyssey' is the great tale, and I was really taken by 'The Iliad,' so I dig into those things, and when I was a kid I didn't. You've gotta have a certain level of understanding yourself before that stuff really starts to resonate. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
When the peace treaty is signed, the war isn't over for the veterans, or the family. It's just starting. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
The only meaningful statistic in warfare is when the other side quits. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
A Frenchman, Alexis de Tocqueville, came to America more than a century ago and made some astute observations about the American way. He said that we have a misleading idea at the very head of our Constitution: the pursuit of happiness. One can not pursue happiness; if he does he obscures it. If he will proceed with the human task of life, the relocation of the center of gravity of the personality to something greater outside itself, happiness will be the outcome. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
Once we recognize our shadow's existence we must resist the enticing step of going with its flow. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
But just below the grim tranquility he had learned to display, he cursed with boiling intensity the ambitious men who used him and his troops to further their careers. He cursed the air wing for not trying to get any choppers in through the clouds. He cursed the diplomats arguing about round and square tables. He cursed the South Vietnamese making money off the black market. He cursed the people back home gorging themselves in front of their televisions. Then he cursed God. Then there was no one else to blame and he cursed himself for thinking God would give a shit. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
We all want to be special, to stand out; there's nothing wrong with this. The irony is that every human being is special to start with, because we're unique to start with. But we then go through some sort of boot camp from the age of zero to about 18 where we learn everything we can about how not to be unique. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
Power was the ability to reward and punish. Henry could reward with money and drugs. He could punish by withholding money and drugs. A nice combination. Ultimately, however, Henry wielded the power of punishment held only by a self-selected few. He was willing to murder. China knew that if a man could kill someone, everyone knew that he could kill anyone. The only way to stand up to that kind of power was to be willing to die. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
War is society's dirty work, usually done by kids cleaning up failures perpetrated by adults. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
When I first got back from the war, I said, 'I'm gonna write the Great American Novel about the Vietnam War.' So I sat down and wrote 1,700 pages of sheer psychotherapy drivel. It was first person, and there would be pages about wet socks and cold feet. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
And I think that it's - the military has actually made improvements, so people are considering post-traumatic stress disorder as, at the least, a possible psychological problem. You know, when I was in Vietnam, it was just considered malingering. And we're making progress. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
'Matterhorn' is my metaphor of the Vietnam War - we built it, we abandoned it, we assaulted it, we lost, and then we abandoned it again. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
I mean ... if you're raised as a decent human being, killing somebody is against every moral thing you've ever been taught. And so, generally, in combat it's 'krauts,' the 'gooks,' the 'yanks' - whatever you want to do to try and make it so that it's not a human being. ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
Today a soldier can go out on patrol and kill someone or have one of his friends killed and call his girlfriend on his cell phone that night and probably talk about anything except what just happened. And if society itself tries to blur it as much as possible, by conscious well-intended efforts to provide "all the comforts of home" and modern transportation and communication, what chance does your average eighteen-year-old have of not becoming confused?2 ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
I mean, if you're proud of what you've done when you've served in the military, well then we call that bragging. And if you are unhappy about what happened, we call that complaining. And so what are you going to do? ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
It was all absurd, without reason or meaning. People who didn't know each other were going to kill each other over a hill none of them cared about ~ Karl Marlantes
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marlantes
But capitalist production begets, with the inexorability of a law of Nature, its own negation. It is the negation of negation. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marx
I've learnt that, even though I've travelled about, I haven't changed that much. ~ Karl Pilkington
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Pilkington
At some point, some insect has had sex with a leaf. ~ Karl Pilkington
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Pilkington
Every truth that we may think complete will prove itself untruth at the moment of shipwreck. ~ Karl Jaspers
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Jaspers
For it is the bitter grief of theology and its blessed task, too, always to have to seek (because it does not clearly have present to it at the time) ... always providing that one has the courage to ask questions, to be dissatisfied, to think with the mind and heart one ACTUALLY has, and not with the mind and heart one is SUPPOSED TO have. ~ Karl Rahner
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Rahner
Science can be useful, or it can just get in the way. ~ Karl King
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl King
The Democratic Party's problem is that voters don't believe the president's claims that the economy is thriving. Even people with jobs feel apprehensive. Paychecks are flat, growth anemic, and people are worried about their children's prospects. Mr. Obama had a 38% approval on handling the economy in the Sept. 9 Fox News poll. In the Sept. 7 NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, 67% believe America is on the wrong track. ~ Karl Rove
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Rove
Keep the best, forget the rest. ~ Karl Lagerfeld
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Lagerfeld
We need to be asking for the vote in the most powerful way possible, which is to have people asking for the vote who are comfortable and look like and sound like the people that we're asking for the vote from. ~ Karl Rove
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Rove
Oh pillow, please continue to kiss my cheek round. I'll let you listen to my dreams to see the girl you'll never meet. ~ Karl Kristian Flores
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Kristian Flores
New Agers can often be a precious breed of born-again goody-goodies. They are unbelievably delusional about their own spirituality, fully believing they're the reincarnation of Julius Caesar or Cleopatra ~ Karl Wiggins
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Wiggins
The burgeoisie, by the rapid improvement of all instruments of production, by the immensely facilitated means of communication, draws all nations into civilization. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marx
Then a boy, pale as death, rushed into the hall, uttering a wild scream of terror. "Death and another are closely pursuing me! ~ Friedrich Heinrich Karl De La Motte Fouque
Karl Marlantes quotes by Friedrich Heinrich Karl De La Motte Fouque
Owing to the difficulty of dealing with substances of high molecular weight we are still a long way from having determined the chemical characteristics and the constitution of proteins, which are regarded as the principal con-stituents of living organisms. ~ Karl Landsteiner
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Landsteiner
There was an idea in the air, becoming clearer and stronger, an idea not just in the theories of Karl Marx but in the dreams of writers and artists through the ages: that people might cooperatively use the treasures of the earth to make life better for everyone, not just a few. ~ Howard Zinn
Karl Marlantes quotes by Howard Zinn
Trip on this! Haile Selassie, who Rastafari regard as God, was possibly greatly influenced by a French poet who although he gave up writing at the age of 20 (which at first glance appears like a huge waste) must certainly have still held an esoteric, otherworldly mind. It can't have just deserted him, can it? Rimbaud had a bewitching and at times ghoulish psyche which managed to explode out of long-established poetic forms while still in his teens. He did it with more rhythm and beauty than almost anyone you care to name. It's extremely likely that ten years later this man had incredible influence on the child who Rastafari were to later think of as God.

An intriguing thought. ~ Karl Wiggins
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Wiggins
My father was a milkman. So, I delivered milk. ~ Karl Malden
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Malden
A being is free only when it can determine and limit its activity. ~ Karl Barth
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Barth
It is a pure tautology to say that crises are provoked by a lack of effective demand or effective consumption. The capitalist system does not recognize any forms of consumer other than those who can pay, if we exclude the consumption of paupers and swindlers. The fact that commodities are unsaleable means no more than that no effective buyers have been found for them, i.e. no consumers (no matter whether the commodities are ultimately sold to meet the needs of productive or individual consumption). ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marx
The English Established Church ... will more readily pardon an attack on 38 of its 39 articles than on 1/39 of its income. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marx
Really, when I think it over, literature has only one excuse for existing; it saves the person who makes it from the disgustingness of life. ~ Joris-Karl Huysmans
Karl Marlantes quotes by Joris-Karl Huysmans
Work made me more streetwise because you can be so sheltered at home. I'd definitely encourage my kids Lillie and Karl, who are nine and seven, to get Saturday jobs in the future. ~ Rebecca Ferguson
Karl Marlantes quotes by Rebecca Ferguson
This false appearance distinguishes wages labour from other historical forms of labour. On the basis of the wages system even the unpaid labour seems to be paid labour. With the slave, on the contrary, even that part of his labour which is paid appears to be unpaid. Of course, in order to work the slave must live, and one part of his working day goes to replace the value of his own maintenance. But since no bargain is struck between him and his master, and no acts of selling and buying are going on between the two parties, all his labour seems to be given away for nothing. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marx
I don't know why small chocolates are called fun-sized; I mean, if I called a midget fun-sized, they'd kick off. ~ Karl Pilkington
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Pilkington
Theories are nets cast to catch what we call 'the world': to rationalize, to explain, and to master it. We endeavor to make the mesh ever finer and finer. ~ Karl Popper
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Popper
The reason American cars don't sell anymore is that they have forgotten how to design the American Dream. What does it matter if you buy a car today or six months from now, because cars are not beautiful. That's why the American auto industry is in trouble: no design, no desire. ~ Karl Lagerfeld
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Lagerfeld
Man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is indeed man's self-consciousness and self-awareness as long as he has not found his feet in the universe. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marx
Industries, unlike organisms, have no organic limits on their own growth; they are constantly in search of new markets, or of new ways to exploit old ones more effectively; as Karl Marx unsympathetically observed, they 'nestle everywhere, settle everywhere, establish connexions everywhere. ~ Tim Wu
Karl Marlantes quotes by Tim Wu
There is a specter haunting Europe, the specter of Communism. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marx
The problem I have with all this religion stuff is that I can't relate to it. I think most people got into 'cos it gave them something to do on a Sunday, but since all the shops are now open it isn't required as much. ~ Karl Pilkington
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Pilkington
The Word ought to be exposed in the words ~ Karl Barth
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Barth
One of my wisdom teeth is playing up. My dentist said it is known to happen with some people when they're stressed. My teeth seem to know I'm stressed before I do. Maybe that's why they're called wisdom teeth. ~ Karl Pilkington
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Pilkington
As for slavery, there is no need for me to speak of its bad aspects. The only thing requiring explanation is the good side of slavery. I do not mean indirect slavery, the slavery of proletariat; I mean direct slavery, the slavery of the Blacks in Surinam, in Brazil, in the southern regions of North America. Direct slavery is as much the pivot upon which our present-day industrialism turns as are machinery, credit, etc. ... Slavery is therefore an economic category of paramount importance. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marlantes quotes by Karl Marx
