I won't close down a business of subnormal profitability merely to add a fraction of a point to our corporate returns. I also feel it inappropriate for even an exceptionally profitable company to fund an operation once it appears to have unending losses in prospect. Adam Smith would disagree with my first proposition and Karl Marx would disagree with my second; the middle ground is the only position that leaves me comfortable. ~ Warren Buffett
Karl Marx quotes by Warren Buffett
Music is the mirror of reality. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Scientific truth is always paradox, if judged by everyday experience, which catches only the delusive appearance of things. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Medicine heals doubts as well as diseases. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
[Napoleon] swept away everywhere the establishments of feudality ... [He was] Caesar himself. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The history of all previous societies has been the history of class struggles. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The wealthy man is the man whois much, not the one who has much ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Industries, unlike organisms, have no organic limits on their own growth; they are constantly in search of new markets, or of new ways to exploit old ones more effectively; as Karl Marx unsympathetically observed, they 'nestle everywhere, settle everywhere, establish connexions everywhere. ~ Tim Wu
Karl Marx quotes by Tim Wu
When a man died, there had to be blame. Jimmy Cross understood this. You could blame the war, You could blame the idiots who made the war. You could blame Kiowa for going to it. You could blame the rain. You could blame the river. You could blame the field, the mud, the climate. You could blame the enemy. You could blame the mortar rounds. You could blame people who were too lazy to read a newspaper, who were bored by the daily body counts, who switched channels at the mention of politics. You could blame whole nations. You could blame God. You could blame the munitions makers or Karl Marx or a trick of fate of an old man in Omaha who forgot to vote. ~ Tim O'Brien
Karl Marx quotes by Tim O'Brien
All I know is that I am not a Marxist. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Although gold and silver are not by nature money, money is by nature gold and silver. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Nature does not produce on the one side owners of money or commodities, and on the other men possessing nothing but their own labour-power. This relation has no natural basis, neither is its social basis one that is common to all historical periods. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The heart of a man is a wonderful thing, especially when it is carried in his wallet. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The present struggle between the South and North is, therefore, nothing but a struggle between two social systems, the system of slavery and the system of free labour. The struggle has broken out because the two systems can no longer live peacefully side by side on the North American continent. It can only be ended by the victory of one system or the other. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
But there are still plenty of people who will tell you that the most evil thing about Karl Marx was what he said about religion. He said it was the opium of the lower classes, as though he thought religion was bad for people, and he wanted to get rid of it. But when Marx said that, back in the 1840s, his use of the word "opium" wasn't simply metaphorical. Back then real opium was the only painkiller available, for toothaches or cancer of the throat, or whatever. He himself had used it. As a sincere friend of the downtrodden, he was saying he was glad they had something which could ease their pain at least a little bit, which was religion. He liked religion for doing that, and certainly didn't want to abolish it. OK? He might have said today as I say tonight, "Religion can be Tylenol for a lot of unhappy people, and I'm so glad it works. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Karl Marx quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
The economic structure of capitalist society has grown out of the economic structure of feudal society. The dissolution of the latter set free the elements of the former ... [T]he historical movement which changes the producers into wage-workers, appears, on the one hand, as their emancipation from serfdom and from the fetters of the guilds, and this side alone exists for our bourgeois historians. But, on the other hand, these new freedmen became sellers of themselves only after they had been robbed of all their own means of production, and of all the guarantees of existence afforded by the old feudal arrangements. And the history of this, their expropriation, is written in the annals of mankind in letters of blood and fire. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Civil servants and priests, soldiers and ballet-dancers, schoolmasters and police constables, Greek museums and Gothic steeples, civil list and services list
the common seed within which all these fabulous beings slumber in embryo is taxation. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Social progress can be measured by the social position of the female sex. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Capitalist production does not exist at all without foreign commerce. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
As the chosen people bore in their features the sign manual of Jehovah , so the division of labour brands the manufacturing workman as the property of capital . ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Such a crises occurs only where the ever-lengthening chain of payments,
and an artificial system of settling them, has been fully
developed. Whenever there is a general and extensive disturbance
of this mechanism, no matter what its cause, money becomes
suddenly and immediately transformed from its merely ideal shape
of money of account into hard cash. Profane commodities can no
longer replace it. The use-value of commodities becomes
valueless, and their value vanishes in the presence of its own
independent form. On the eve of the crisis, the bourgeois, with
the self-sufficiency that springs from intoxicating prosperity,
declares money to be a vain imagination. Commodities alone are
money. But now the cry is everywhere that money alone is a
commodity! As the hart pants after fresh water, so pants his soul
after money, the only wealth. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Capitalist agricultural production prevents the return to the soil of its elements consumed by man in the form of food and clothing; it therefore violates the conditions necessary to lasting fertility of the soil. By this action it destroys at the same time the health of the town labourer and the intellectual life of the rural labourer. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Catch a man a fish, and you can sell it to him. Teach a man to fish, and you ruin a wonderful business opportunity. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
One cannot do justice to Marx without recognizing his sincerity. His open-mindedness, his sense of facts, his distrust of verbiage, and especially of moralizing verbiage, made him one of the world's most influential fighters against hypocrisy and pharisaism. He had a burning desire to help the oppressed, and was fully conscious of the need for proving himself in deeds, and not only in words. His main talents being theoretical, he devoted immense labour to forging what he believed to be scientific weapons for the fight to improve the lot of the vast majority of men. His sincerity in his search for truth and his intellectual honesty distinguish him, I believe, from many of his followers (although unfortunately he did not altogether escape the corrupting influence of an upbringing in the atmosphere of Hegelian dialectics, described by Schopenhauer as 'destructive of all intelligence'). Marx's interest in social science and social philosophy was fundamentally a practical interest. He saw in knowledge a means of promoting the progress of man. ~ Karl Popper
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Popper
Religion is the opium of the masses. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
My paper has to be very long and complex," I said. "I shall cite all the great thinkers - Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud." "What about Adolf Hitler?" "Oh, him. He's not a thinker. He's just a ranter and raver." "There may come a time," said Pepi, "when people cannot tell the difference." "Impossible," I solemnly predicted. "I have read Hitler's book Mein Kampf and also some works by his colleague Herr Alfred Rosenberg because I am a fair-minded, objective person and I believe one should always hear out all sides before making a decision, and so I can tell you from firsthand knowledge that these men are idiots. Their ideas about how the Jews have poisoned their so-called superior Aryan race and caused all of Germany's troubles are utter nonsense. No intelligent person could possibly believe them. Hitler is laughable. He will soon disappear." "Just like all your old boyfriends," Pepi said with his sly smile. ~ Edith Hahn Beer
Karl Marx quotes by Edith Hahn Beer
Nothing is more tedious than the dreaming platitude. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Social reforms are never carried out by the weakness of the strong; but always by the strength of the weak. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
What is crucial in the true state is not the fact that every citizen has the chance to devote himself to the universal interest in the shape of a particular class, but the capacity of the universal class to be really universal, i.e. to be the class of every citizen. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The realm of freedom does not commence until the point is passed where labor under the compulsion of necessity and of external utility is required. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
There is something in human history like retribution; and it is a rule of historical retribution that its instrument be forged not by the offended, but by the offender himself. The first blow dealt to the French monarchy proceeded from the nobility, not from the peasants. The Indian revolt does not commence with the ryots, tortured, dishonoured and stripped naked by the British, but with the sepoys, clad, fed and petted, fatted and pampered by them. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The national debt has given rise to joint stock companies, to dealings in negotiable effects of all kinds, and to agiotage , in a word to stock-exchange gambling and the modern bankocracy . ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
In every revolution there intrude, at the side of its true agents, men of a different stamp; some of them survivors of and devotees to past revolutions, without insight into the present movement, but preserving popular influence by their known honesty and courage, or by the sheer force of tradition; others mere brawlers, who, by dint of repeating year after year the same set of stereotyped declamations against the government of the day, have sneaked into the reputation of revolutionists of the first water They are an unavoidable evil: with time they are shaken off. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Very well then; emancipation from usury and money, that is, from practical, real Judaism, would constitute the emancipation of our time. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas, i.e. the class which is the ruling material force of society, is at the same time its ruling intellectual force. The class which has the means of material production at its disposal, has control at the same time over the means of mental production, so that thereby, generally speaking, the ideas of those who lack the means of mental production are subject to it. The ruling ideas are nothing more than the ideal expression of the dominant material relationships, the dominant material relationships grasped as ideas. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Ideas do not exist separately from language. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The more powerful the work, the more powerless the worker. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Man makes his own history, but he does not make it out of the whole cloth; he does not make it out of conditions chosen by himself, but out of such as he finds close at hand. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The Communists everywhere support every revolutionary movement against the existing social and political order of things ... They openly declare that their ends can be attained only by the forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The mystery of this courage of Bauer's is Hegel's Phenomenology. As Hegel here puts self-consciousness in the place of man, the most varied human reality appears only as a definite form, as a determination of self-consciousness. But a mere determination of self-consciousness is a "pure category," a mere "thought" which I can consequently also abolish in "pure" thought and overcome through pure thought. In Hegel's Phenomenology the material, perceptible, objective bases of the various estranged forms of human self-consciousness are left as they are. Thus the whole destructive work results in the most conservative philosophy because it thinks it has overcome the objective world, the sensuously real world, by merely transforming it into a "thing of thought" a mere determination of self-consciousness and can therefore dissolve its opponent, which has become ethereal, in the "ether of pure thought." Phenomenology is therefore quite logical when in the end it replaces human reality by "Absolute Knowledge" - Knowledge, because this is the only mode of existence of self-consciousness, because self-consciousness is considered as the only mode of existence of man; absolute knowledge for the very reason that self-consciousness knows itself alone and is no more disturbed by any objective world. Hegel makes man the man of self-consciousness instead of making self-consciousness the self-consciousness of man, of real man, man living in a real objective world and determined by that world. He ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
In the social production which men carry on they enter into definite relations that are indispensable and independent of their will; these relations of production correspond to a definite stage of development of their material powers of production. The sum total of these relations of production constitutes the economic structure of society - the real foundation, on which rise legal and political superstructures and to which correspond definite forms of social consciousness. The mode of production in material life determines the general character of the social, political and spiritual processes of life. It is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, but, on the contrary, their social existence determines their consciousness. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
frenzy in the early capitalist states of Europe for gold, for slaves, for products of the soil, to pay the bondholders and stockholders of the expeditions, to finance the monarchical bureaucracies rising in Western Europe, to spur the growth of the new money economy rising out of feudalism, to participate in what Karl Marx would later call "the primitive accumulation of capital." These were the violent beginnings of an intricate system of technology, business, politics, and culture that would dominate the world for the next five centuries. ~ Howard Zinn
Karl Marx quotes by Howard Zinn
The monopoly of capital becomes a fetter upon the mode of production, which has sprung up and flourished along with, and under it. Centralisation of the means of production and socialisation of labour at last reach a point where they become incompatible with there capitalist integument. This integument is burst asunder. The knell of capitalist private property sounds. The expropriators are expropriated. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Ignorance never yet helped anybody. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The rule apparently is – once a social revolution takes place there's
no need to stoke the boiler. But I ask you: why, when this whole business started, should everybody suddenly start clumping up and down the marble staircase in dirty galoshes and felt boots? Why must we now keep our galoshes under lock and key? And put a soldier on guard over them to prevent them from being stolen? Why has the carpet been removed from the front staircase? Did Marx forbid people to keep their staircases carpeted? Did Karl Marx say anywhere
that the front door of No. 2 Kalabukhov House in Prechistenka Street must be boarded up so that people have to go round and come in by the back door? What good does it do anybody? Why can't the proletarians leave their galoshes downstairs instead of dirtying the staircase?'
'But the proletarians don't have any galoshes, Philip Philipovich,' stammered the doctor. ~ Mikhail Bulgakov
Karl Marx quotes by Mikhail Bulgakov
Freedom is slavery some poets tell us.
Enslave yourself to the right leader's truth,
Christ's or Karl Marx', and it will set you free. ~ Robert Frost
Karl Marx quotes by Robert Frost
I wish to avenge myself against the One who rules above. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
By means of the banking system the distribution of capital as a special business, a social function, is taken out of the hands of the private capitalists and usurers. But at the same time, banking and credit become the most effective means of driving captialist production beyond its own limits and one of the most effective vehicles of crises and swindle. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
In all of human history no country or no people have suffered such terrible slavery, conquest and foreign oppression and no country and no people have struggled so strenuously for their emancipation than Sicily and the Sicilians. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
On the basis of capitalist production, a new swindle with the wages of management develops in connection with joint-stock companies, in that, over and above the actual managing director, a number of governing and supervisory boards arise, for which management and supervision are in fact a mere pretext for the robbery of shareholders and their own enrichment. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
All cases, therefore, the use-value of the labour-power is advanced to the capitalist: the labourer allows the buyer to consume it before he receives payment of the price; he everywhere gives credit to the capitalist. That this credit is no mere fiction, is shown not only by the occasional loss of wages on the bankruptcy of the capitalist,[181] but also by a series of more enduring consequences. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
To be radical is to grasp things by the root. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The circulation of commodities is the original precondition of the circulation of money. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Eleanor Marx was her father's first biographer. All subsequent biographies of Karl Marx, and most of Engels, draw on her work as their primary sources for the family history, often without knowing it. I think if she'd been a son, she would have been referenced more. ~ Rachel Holmes
Karl Marx quotes by Rachel Holmes
An increase in the productivity of labour means nothing more than that the same capital creates the same value with less labour, or that less labour creates the same product with more capital. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The labourer seeks to maintain the total of his wages for a given time by performing more labour, either by working a greater number of hours, or by accomplishing more in the same number of hours. Thus, urged on by want, he himself multiplies the disastrous effects of division of labour. The result is: the more he works, the less wages he receives. And for this simple reason: the more he works, the more he competes against his fellow workmen, the more he compels them to compete against him, and to offer themselves on the same wretched conditions as he does so that, in the last analysis, he competes against himself as a member of the working class. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Here's your first problem," he said, pointing at a sentence. "'Religion is the opium of the people.' Well, I don't know about people, but I think you'll find that the opium of pirates is actual opium. ~ Gideon Defoe
Karl Marx quotes by Gideon Defoe
All mysteries which lead theory to mysticism find their rational solution in human practice and in the comprehension of this practice. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
What I did that was new was to prove that the existence of classes is only bound up with particular, historical phases in the development of production; that the class struggle necessarily leads to the dictatorship of the proletariat; and that dictatorship itself only constitutes the transition to the abolition of all classes and to a classless society. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The Tories in England had long imagined that they were enthusiastic about the monarchy, the church and beauties of the old English Constitution, until the day of danger wrung from them the confession that they are enthusiastic only about rent. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
If one wants to be an ox one can easily turn one's back on hum suffering and look after one's own skin. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The values of commodities are directly as the times of labor employed in their production, and are inversely as the productive powers of the labor employed. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Truth is general, it does not belong to me alone, it belongs to all, it owns me, I do not own it. My property is the form, which is my spiritual individuality. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Work is the undoing of nature. ~ Paul Majkut
Karl Marx quotes by Paul Majkut
The directing motive, the end and aim of capitalist production, is to extract the greatest possible amount of surplus value, and consequently to exploit labor-power to the greatest possible extent. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Hitherto, every form of society has been based ... on the antagonism of oppressing and oppressed classes. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
You are horrified at our intending to do away with private property. But in your existing society private property is already done away with for nine-tenths of the population; its existence for the few is solely due to its non-existence in the hands of those nine-tenths. You reproach us, therefore, with intending to do away with a form of property, the necessary condition for whose existence is the non-existence of any property for the immense majority of society.
In one word, you reproach us with intending to do away with your property. Precisely so: that is just what we intend. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
In the various stages of development which the struggle of working class against the bourgeoisie has to pass through, they always and everywhere represent the interests of the movement as a whole. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
I don't shy away from saying that the single most developed tradition of critical thought devoted to the study of capitalism was initiated by Karl Marx. His work was built on that of many people who preceded him. It does not offer the only set of solutions to our problems; it has its own shortcomings and failures. But if you want to think critically about capitalism, sooner of later you are going to have to encounter the theoretical traditions of Marxism, because it is the most developed and draws from contributions made from every country on Earth, from a thousand struggles against business and governments supporting capitalism. It's a repository, a rich resource that ought to be made use of by anyone who wants to have a balanced perspective when it comes to dealing with the real problems. ~ Richard Wolff
Karl Marx quotes by Richard Wolff
Society is a sort of organism on the growth of which conscious efforts can exercise little effect. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The bourgeois during its rule of scarce one hundred years, has created more massive and more colossal productive forces than have all preceding generations together. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The new era differs from the old chiefly in that the lash begins to imagine itself possessed of genius. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
European revolutions followed textbooks - Thomas Paine's Rights of Man, Karl Marx' Communist Manifesto or Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf - while Mexicans wrote their texts after the fighting was over. ~ Richard Grabman
Karl Marx quotes by Richard Grabman
Both for the production on a mass scale of this communist consciousness, and for the success of the cause itself, the alteration of men on a mass scale is necessary, an alteration which can only take place in a practical movement, a revolution; this revolution is necessary, therefore, not only because the ruling class cannot be overthrown in any other way, but also because the class overthrowing it can only in a revolution succeed in ridding itself of all the muck of ages and become fitted to found society anew. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Money is therefore not only the object but also the fountainhead of greed. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Change the economic base and you will change human beings. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
How lame an anti-climax! If the working-class has remained "poor," only "less poor" in proportion as it produces for the wealthy class "an intoxicating augmentation of wealth and power," then it has remained relatively just as poor. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Everyone should be able to attend to his religious as well as his bodily needs without the police sticking their nose in. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
All moral relationships are indissoluble according to their concept, as one can easily convince one's self by postulating their truth. A true state, a true marriage, a true friendship, and indissoluble. But no state, no marriage, no friendship corresponds completely to its concept... (Karl Marx) ~ Eugene Kamenka
Karl Marx quotes by Eugene Kamenka
Capital is dead labour, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labour, and lives the more, the more labour it sucks. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The French need a thrashing. If the Prussians win, the centralisation of the state power will be useful for the centralisation of the German working class. German predominance would also transfer the centre of gravity of the workers' movement in Western Europe from France to Germany, and one has only to compare the movement in the two countries from 1866 till now to see that the German working class is superior to the French both theoretically and organisationally. Their predominance over the French on the world stage would also mean the predominance of our theory over Proudhon's, etc. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Imperialism is da woist thing I ever hoid! ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
In one way or another, these fears echoed the beliefs of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, who argued in The Communist Manifesto (1848) that governments in capitalist society were political extensions of the interests of business owners. "The executive of the state," they wrote, was "nothing more than a committee for managing the affairs of the whole bourgeoisie."25 Over the following decades, scores of influential followers would advance various arguments that had in common a core theme. Marxists argued that the expansion of capitalism brought with it the reinforcement of class divisions and, through imperialism and the spread of finance capital around the world, the replication of these divisions both within countries and between them. ~ Moises Naim
Karl Marx quotes by Moises Naim
The individual produces an object and, by consuming it, returns to himself, but returns as a productive and self reproducing individual. Consumption thus appears as a moment of production. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Religions are metaphorical systems that give us bigger containers in which to hold our lives. A spiritual life allows us to move beyond the ego into something more universal. Religious experience carries us outside of clock time into eternal time. We open ourselves into something more complete and beautiful. This bigger vista is perhaps the most magnificent aspect of a religious experience.
There is a sense in which Karl Marx was correct when he said that religion is the opiate of the people. However, he was wrong to scoff at this. Religion can give us skills for climbing up on onto a ledge above our suffering and looking down at it with a kind and open mind. This helps us calm down and connect to all of the world's sufferers. Since the beginning of human time, we have yearned for peace in the face of death, loss, anger and fear. In fact, it is often trauma that turns us toward the sacred, and it is the sacred that saves us. ~ Mary Pipher
Karl Marx quotes by Mary Pipher
Not only are they slaves of the bourgeois class, and of the bourgeois State; they are daily and hourly enslaved by the machine, by the over-looker, and, above all, by the individual bourgeois manufacturer himself. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
In its rational form [dialectic] is a scandal and abomination to bourgeoisdom and its doctrinaire professors, because it includes in its comprehension and affirmative recognition of the existing state of things, at the same time also, the recognition of the negation of that state, of its inevitable breaking up; because it regards every historically developed social form as in fluid movement, and therefore takes into account its transient nature not less than its momentary existence because it lets nothing impose upon it, and is in its essence critical and revolutionary. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Those professions which are not so much involved in life itself as concerned with abstract truths are the most dangerous for the young man whose principles are not yet firm and whose convictions are not yet strong and unshakeable. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Librarians are wonderful people, partly because they are, on the whole, unaware of how dangerous knowledge is. Karl Marx upended the political landscape of the twentieth century sitting at a library table. Still, modern librarians are more afraid of ingnorance than they are of the potential devastation that knowledge can bring. (p. 192) ~ Walter Mosley
Karl Marx quotes by Walter Mosley
The modern history of capital dates from the creation in the 16th century of a world-embracing commerce and a world-embracing market. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
It [bourgeoisie] has resolved personal worth into exchange value, and in place of the numberless indefeasible chartered freedoms, has set up that single, unconscionable freedom – Free Trade. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
The abolition of bourgeois individuality, bourgeois independence, and bourgeois freedom is undoubtedly aimed at. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Under private property, each tries to establish over the other an alien power, so as thereby to find satisfaction of his own selfish need. The increase in the quantity of objects is therefore accompanied by an extension of the realm of the alien powers to which man is subjected, and every new product represents a new potentiality of mutual swindling and mutual plundering. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Each step in the development of the bourgeoisie was accompanied by a corresponding political advance in that class. An oppressed class under the sway of the feudal nobility, an armed and self-governing association of medieval commune: here independent urban republic (as ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
There are, besides, eternal truths, such as Freedom, , etc., that are common to all states of society. But Communism abolishes eternal truths, it abolishes all religion, and all morality, instead of constituting them on a new basis; it therefore acts in contradiction to all past historical experience. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
History does nothing; it does not possess immense riches, it does not fight battles. It is men, real, living, who do all this. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
To say that "the worker has an interest in the rapid growth of capital", means only this: that the more speedily the worker augments the wealth of the capitalist, the larger will be the crumbs which fall to him, the greater will be the number of workers than can be called into existence, the more can the mass of slaves dependent upon capital be increased. ~ Karl Marx
Karl Marx quotes by Karl Marx
Socialism really works under some circumstances. Karl Marx just had the wrong species. ~ Edward O. Wilson
