[Comedies], in the ancient world, were regarded as of a higher rank than tragedy, of a deeper truth, of a more difficult realization, of a sounder structure, and of a revelation more complete. The happy ending of the fairy tale, the myth, and the divine comedy of the soul, is to be read, not as a contradiction, but as a transcendence of the universal tragedy of man ... Tragedy is the shattering of the forms and of our attachments to the forms; comedy, the wild and careless, inexhaustible joy of life invincible. ~ Joseph Campbell
Divine Comedy quotes by Joseph Campbell
The Divine Comedy is a political poem and when you say poetry is not about - he's always quoted out of context, that "poetry makes nothing happen," that doesn't mean you shrug your shoulders and don't try to make anything happen. And Dante felt that poetry was engaged, there was a point of view; it's not my point of view, it's orthodox medieval Christianity, and I have my troubles with that. He didn't feel that you could just rule out so important a section of life - we care about these things, and it's out of caring about them that we write poetry. ~ W.S. Merwin
Divine Comedy quotes by W.S. Merwin
Was I (am I not still?) a victim of words and books merely, and are books just an excuse for living, living things out in parenthesis, even in the most desolate stony place as I was, quotations and misquotations raining down on me thick and fast – words, words, words – the multitude of words, a parody of rain? For after all, as old Mrs Feany said, the rain is healthy. And the rain it raineth everyday. But the stuff of books and solitude and spying on the poor, could they be healthy? Or were my doubts the real heresy and treason? What book ever changed the world? It seems a solipsism to say that what changes the way we see the world, changes the world, but it is not. Where do you want me to begin? The Bible, Das Kapital? The Divine Comedy, The Satanic Verses? ~ Andrew McNeillie
Divine Comedy quotes by Andrew McNeillie
The writer, having lost his way in a gloomy forest, and being hindered by certain wild beasts from ascending a mountain, is met by Virgil, who promises to show him the punishments of Hell, and afterwards of Purgatory; and that he shall then be conducted by Beatrice into Paradise. He follows the Roman Poet. ~ Dante Alighieri
Divine Comedy quotes by Dante Alighieri
The happy ending of the fairy tale, the myth, and the divine comedy of the soul is to be read, not as a contradiction, but as a transcendence of the universal tragedy of man. The objective world remains what it was, but, because of a shift of emphasis within the subject, is beheld as though transformed. ~ Joseph Campbell
Divine Comedy quotes by Joseph Campbell
It's not by accident that people talk of a state of confusion as not being able to see the wood for the trees, or of being out of the woods when some crisis is surmopunted. It is a place of loss, confusion, terror and anger, a place where you can, like Dante, find yourself going down into Hell. But if it's any comfort, the dark wood isn't just that. It's also a place of opportunity and adventure. It is the place in which fortunes can be reversed, hearts mended, hopes reborn. ~ Amanda Craig
Divine Comedy quotes by Amanda Craig
Everyone loves a comedy, my dear. It is divine. ~ Rawi Hage
Divine Comedy quotes by Rawi Hage
It's the Divine Comedy, not the Divine Tragedy. ~ Cat Bauer
Divine Comedy quotes by Cat Bauer
His (Islamic astronomer al-Farghani) legacy also endures through the Italian writer and poet Dante (1265-1321), who derived most of the astronomical knowledge he included in his DIVINE COMEDY from the writings of al-Farghani (whom he referred to by his Latin name, Alfraganus). ~ Jim Al-Khalili
Divine Comedy quotes by Jim Al-Khalili
To neglect ones own ability to laugh is the greatest form of Blasphemy, for to laugh is to pray. ~ Ilyas Kassam
Divine Comedy quotes by Ilyas Kassam
The Divine Comedy. ~ Dan Brown
Divine Comedy quotes by Dan Brown
The Divine Comedy, and indeed our own spiritual life, is not about rejection, or suppression, it is about redemption. ~ Malcolm Guite
Divine Comedy quotes by Malcolm Guite
No, never mind, I didn't think so. Mead, Dante's theme is man-not a man.' Lowell said finally with a mild patience that he reserved only for students. "The Italians forever twitch at Dante's sleeves trying to make him say he is of their politics and their way of thinking. Their way indeed! To confine it to Florence or Italy is to banish it from the sympathies of mankind. We read Paradise Lost as a poem but Dante's Comedy as a chronicle of our inner lives. Do you boys know of Isaiah 38:10 ~ Matthew Pearl
Divine Comedy quotes by Matthew Pearl
This was part of the divine comedy-God's sense of humor undergirding the inner workings of the universe. Sinners participated in the redemption of other sinners; faith, hope and charity triumphed over disbelief, despair, and hatred, while the One who called all creatures to Himself watched and smiled. ~ Sylvain Reynard
Divine Comedy quotes by Sylvain Reynard
The most recent of the iamides, heavily advertised - authentium. Creates synthetic recollections of things that never happened. A few grams of dantine, for instance, and a man goes around with a deep conviction that he has written The Divine Comedy. Why anyone would want that is another matter and quite beyond me. ~ Stanislaw Lem
Divine Comedy quotes by Stanislaw Lem
Inferno is the underworld as described in Dante Alighieri's epic poem The Divine Comedy, which portrays hell as an elaborately structured realm populated by entities known as "shades" - bodiless souls trapped between life and death. ~ Dan Brown
Divine Comedy quotes by Dan Brown
Come on, shake off the covers of this sloth, for sitting softly cushioned, or tucked in bed, is no way to win fame. ~ Dante Alighieri
Divine Comedy quotes by Dante Alighieri
The entire Bible, viewed as a "divine comedy," is contained within a U-shaped story of this sort, one in which man, as explained, loses the tree and water of life at the beginning of Genesis and gets them back at the end of Revelation. ~ Northrop Frye
Divine Comedy quotes by Northrop Frye
If the present world go astray, the cause is in you, in you it is to be sought. ~ Dante Alighieri
Divine Comedy quotes by Dante Alighieri
HELEN HAYES: "Which part of The Divine Comedy do you like the most, Tiziano?"
TIZIANO CONTI: "The fifth Canto."
HELEN HAYES: "The Hell, huh?"
TIZIANO CONTI: "L'inferno depicts the truth. ~ Merce Cardus
Divine Comedy quotes by Merce Cardus
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. ~ Dante Alighieri
Divine Comedy quotes by Dante Alighieri
...It is the one time Dante calls such explicit attention to the idea of contrapasso-a word for which we have no exact translation, no precise definition in English, because the word in itself is its definition... Well, my dear Longfellow, I would say countersuffering ... the notion that each sinner must be punished by continuing the damage of his own sin against him... just as these Schismatics are cut apart... ~ Matthew Pearl
Divine Comedy quotes by Matthew Pearl
In the mid–path of my life, I woke to find myself in a dark wood,' writes Dante, in The Divine Comedy, beginning a quest that will lead to transformation and redemption. A journey through the dark of the woods is a motif common to fairy tales: young heroes set off through the perilous forest in order to reach their destiny, or they find themselves abandoned there, cast off and left for dead. The road is long and treacherous, prowled by wolves, ghosts, and wizards - but helpers also appear along the way, good fairies and animal guides, often cloaked in unlikely disguises. The hero's task is to tell friend from foe, and to keep walking steadily onward. ~ Terri Windling
Divine Comedy quotes by Terri Windling
One way to respond to these "sins" is found in The Divine Comedy, in which Dante is ultimately led to the vision of God by his guide, Beatrice. In first traversing through the Inferno, Dante reveals that the inhabitants of the Inferno are not there because they are sinners. Sinners also make up the populations of Purgatory and Paradise. Rather, those souls are in the Inferno because they are sinners who refused to admit to their own sins. They denied their faults and projected them onto others, blaming everyone around them. The lesson we learn is that only when our sins become acknowledged and deeply felt can they be integrated. Deep reflection and prayer are an important part of the integration of the [inner] shadow. Once we admit to our shadow with honesty and an open heart, the shadow has the potential to become transformed.

Once the shadow is integrated, the Seven Deadly Sins can become aspects of a healthy self. Greed and lust become passion, imbuing our journey with heart and fire. Anger transforms into righteousness that acts compassionately for own and other's behalf. The healthy side to gluttony is self-care, something many women have to learn. Envy, once integrated, becomes an appreciation of others. And in a society where doing is valued over being, sloth turns into the ability to be still. Pride enables us to feel good about our accomplishments and grow in confidence and strength. But the path to authenticity is to admit these qualities are within us. I ~ Helen LaKelly Hunt
Divine Comedy quotes by Helen LaKelly Hunt
I believe in the future a new Dante will write a new Divine Comedy. ~ Ba Jin
Divine Comedy quotes by Ba Jin

All things in a single volume bound by Love
of which the universe is the scattered leaves. ~ Dante Alighieri
Divine Comedy quotes by Dante Alighieri
Lilac was compelled to battle and overcome the evil in front of her so that Dahmien could be metamorphosed back to his divine spiritual wholeness. She was determined to combat his demons with pure, unconditional love to save her family from further torment and to end the ancestral bloodline curse once and for all. ~ Lali A. Love
Divine Comedy quotes by Lali A. Love
Sometimes love finds you when it's ready. And when you're ready too. How that happens is anybody's guess. Love is the great mystery stew, its secrets well kept, its ingredients known to providence alone. While both people are being prepared, marinated, skewered, cooked to readiness in the fires of life, the cosmic alchemist is turning the pot, reverently preparing the base for the lovers who will meld into it. Only God knows when the stew is ready to be served. Divine timing, Divine dining… ~ Jeff Brown
Divine Comedy quotes by Jeff Brown
Whenever we read a line of the Bible, we must say, Lord Jesus, let me contact You in the divine Word. Lord, You are the living Word. Without You as the living Word I can receive nothing as life from the written Word. Lord, I must contact You. Although You are so mysterious, I praise You that You have given me such a tangible Word. This Word is solid, concrete, and substantial. I thank You for the Word that I can read and pray with. Yet, Lord, what I need is not the letter in black and white, but You, the living Spirit. ~ Witness Lee
Divine Comedy quotes by Witness Lee
No children are so divine that they do not need responsible parenting and be taught proper manners. ~ Anni Sennov
Divine Comedy quotes by Anni Sennov
To be endowed with strength by nature, to be actuated by the powers of the mind, and to have a certain spirit almost divine infused into you. ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero
Divine Comedy quotes by Marcus Tullius Cicero
Honestly, my biggest education regarding improv comedy actually came on the job working for 'My Boys.' ~ Reid Scott
Divine Comedy quotes by Reid Scott
I like the rhythm of comedy in dramas, if that makes sense. In other words, I don't want to write setup, punch, setup, punch, where the joke dictates the scene; I want to find comedy in which the drama is actually driving the moment in the scene. ~ Rob Thomas
Divine Comedy quotes by Rob Thomas
I was supposed to write a romantic comedy, but my characters broke up. ~ Ann Brashares
Divine Comedy quotes by Ann Brashares
With wisdom all choices are made with Divine Intent. With compassion all choices are made with Love. Divine Inspiration comes through the heart. Through the mind comes the ability to manifest the inspiration in the physical. ~ Sharon Ellis
Divine Comedy quotes by Sharon Ellis

Divine Comedy quotes by Bree Despain
Forget it," I said. "Opie could be bloodthirsty, rabid, radioactive, and selling life insurance and he'd still be preferable to listening to the two of you. ~ John Zakour
Divine Comedy quotes by John Zakour
Your mind is not part of the brain, but its part of the spirit. The appearance of the mind is like subtle clothing that covers the whole brain, heart and body, and all the images, thought process, feelings, emotions, dreams, desires, experience and impressions of life, take place, inside of that clothing. ~ Roshan Sharma
Divine Comedy quotes by Roshan Sharma
I'm very hip-oriented. I focus on hips in my comedy - probably more than any other hipster comic who is out there hipping today. My hips, other hips. I work with my hips a great deal. That is what I do. But not in a gay way. ~ Demetri Martin
Divine Comedy quotes by Demetri Martin
We've all had at least a fleeting experience of a deep connection with the Divine in a meditation, in a moment of realization, or at a time when we felt blessed by the universe because everything was going our way. When we look through divine eyes, there is no judgment, no need to be righteous or to make ourselves wrong. ~ Debbie Ford
Divine Comedy quotes by Debbie Ford
I don't like comedy. I like funny things. I don't like comedy. Like, comedy movies are just, 'Oh Jesus.' ~ Louis C.K.
Divine Comedy quotes by Louis C.K.
In a shipboard lecture en route to America, John Winthrop, Massachusetts' first governor, called the soon-to-be-founded settlement "a city on a hill," a model of God's ultimate plan for humanity. Elaborated by a succession of ministers, this sense of divine purpose arose from a particular reading of sacred history: God had chosen the Puritans to create in America a New Zion, as He had once chosen the Jews in ancient times. Sometimes reformulated in secular language, this deep-seated belief in America's unique role in history would long survive. ~ Paul S. Boyer
Divine Comedy quotes by Paul S. Boyer
How is true possession to be distinguished from fraud or the symptoms of disease? The Church prescribes four tests - the language test, the test of preternatural physical strength, the test of levitation and the test of clairvoyance and prevision. If a person can on occasion understand, or better still, speak a language, of which, in his normal state, he is completely ignorant; if he can manifest the physical miracle of levitation or perform unaccountable feats of strength, and if he can correctly predict the future or describe events taking place at a distance - then that person may be presumed to be possessed by devils. (Alternatively, he may be presumed to be the recipient of extraordinary graces; for in many instances divine and infernal miracles are, most unhappily, identical. The levitation of saintly ecstatic is distinguishable from the levitation of ecstatics demoniacs only in virtue of the moral antecedents and consequences of the event. These moral antecedents and consequences are often hard to assess, and it has sometimes happened that even the holiest persons have been suspected of producing their ESP phenomena and their PK effects by diabolic means.) ~ Aldous Huxley
Divine Comedy quotes by Aldous Huxley
As long as you identify with the universe - which is perfect and can correct material conditions to bring them back into alignment with that Divine perfection - as long as that is where your mind is aligned, it's as though there were two parallel universes. You decide with every thought you think which one you're going to inhabit. Two parallel universes of experience, as it were. ~ Marianne Williamson
Divine Comedy quotes by Marianne Williamson
I met Shannon Hale through some friends and family. I was interested in her book called Princess Academy, which is just a very sweet, Newbery-nominated fairy tale for young readers. She was like, "Oh, actually I have something else for you." She gave me Austenland. The next morning, I'm sure I called her and I was like, "Let's make this movie." It is so fun. It just felt so girly and great and a great vehicle for the weird Hess comedy. ~ Jerusha Hess
Divine Comedy quotes by Jerusha Hess
If I had been born in the 1700's, presumably children had a bigger vocabulary than I had which means I wouldn't have been able to recite fairy tales to kids because I'm not smart enough.

You know…?

I'd have to be like…..uh:
In time passed, though not long ago, there lived three pigs in stature, little in number, three, who being of an age both entitled and inspired to seek their fortune did set about to do thusly.
When they had traveled a distance, pig numbered first spake saying, "Harken Brethren, head this impetuous realm! Tarry me far from hearth and home I fear we shall fair *snort* not well!" And so being collectively agreed, but individually impaled, the diminutive swine sought each to erect himself an abode..... ~ John Branyan
Divine Comedy quotes by John Branyan
I like gross generalizations ... I also like disgusting specifics! ~ Josh Stern
Divine Comedy quotes by Josh Stern
We sainted St. Tammany (King Tamanend III) because he embodied moral perfection and every divine qualification that a deity could possess. I hold him in higher esteem than the saints of the Roman Catholic Church. He'll forever be the patron saint of America. ~ George Washington
Divine Comedy quotes by George Washington
I think women are different, and I think having them in the room is crucial to a family comedy, ensemble comedy, television comedy, where half the eyeballs on your show are women. ~ Dan Harmon
Divine Comedy quotes by Dan Harmon
I've been trying to get into comedy for years. I had a meeting with one of the networks a couple years ago, a general meeting, and when they asked what I was looking for and I told them I'd prefer to do comedy, it was as if I had two heads. ~ Natalie Zea
Divine Comedy quotes by Natalie Zea

Divine Comedy quotes by Joan Osborne
To see a comedy in an environment where you're surrounded by other people that are laughing is great. That's probably more satisfying than just watching it by yourself. ~ Griffin Dunne
Divine Comedy quotes by Griffin Dunne
The soul is bound to the body by a chain of desires, temptations, troubles and worries, and it is trying to free itself. If you keep tugging at that chain which is holding you to mortal consciousness, some day an invisible Divine Hand will intervene and snap it apart and you will be free. ~ Paramahansa Yogananda
Divine Comedy quotes by Paramahansa Yogananda
Comedy is a great weapon of attack. It's not a great weapon of support. ~ Eddie Izzard
Divine Comedy quotes by Eddie Izzard

Divine Comedy quotes by Sarah Ban Breathnach
Change is terrifying for people who feel immune to it by virtue of status, divine appointment, or imagined irreplaceability. ~ Mimi Kennedy
Divine Comedy quotes by Mimi Kennedy
Taboo restrictions are distinct from religious or moral prohibitions. They are not based upon any divine ordinance, but may be said to impose themselves on their own account. They differ from moral prohibitions in that they fall into no system that declares quite generally that certain abstinences must be observed and gives reasons for that necessity. ~ Sigmund Freud
Divine Comedy quotes by Sigmund Freud
The Bible, itself the ultimate curse, is an in-depth profile of the divine spleen. ~ Ruth Hurmence Green
Divine Comedy quotes by Ruth Hurmence Green
I did this Super-8 film at art school called 'Tissues,' this black comedy about a family whose father has been arrested for child molestation. I was absolutely thrilled by every inch of it, and would throw my projector in the back of my car and show it to anybody who would watch it. ~ Jane Campion
Divine Comedy quotes by Jane Campion

Divine Comedy quotes by Darynda Jones
I would love to do comedy. I think I'm funny and that comedy is my strong suit, at least in real life. I have yet to prove myself in the movies, but I'd love to get the opportunity to do that. ~ Evan Peters
Divine Comedy quotes by Evan Peters
My career is a black comedy of sorts. I spent a lot of time explaining myself to various different groups. But more and more, I'm finding that the desire to communicate, which all these audiences share, is a powerful thing. ~ G. Willow Wilson
Divine Comedy quotes by G. Willow Wilson
The English have a wellspring of comedy that will never be exhausted: the combination of bestial urges and excellent manners. ~ David Edelstein
Divine Comedy quotes by David Edelstein
I am not responsible for what other people think. I am responsible only for what I myself think, and I know what that is. No idea I've ever come up with has ever struck me as a divine revelation. Nothing I have ever observed leads me to think there is a God watching over me. ~ Isaac Asimov
Divine Comedy quotes by Isaac Asimov
No soul ever fell away from God without giving up prayer. Prayer is that which establishes contact with Divine Power and opens the invisible resources of heaven. However dark the way, when we pray, temptation can never master us. The first step downward in the average soul is the giving up of the practice of prayer, the breaking of the circuit with divinity, and the proclamation of one's owns self sufficiency. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Divine Comedy quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The only thing which really seemed to pay off in life, if you went by Mary Pedersen's example, was sleeping with your superiors. ~ Jonas Eriksson
Divine Comedy quotes by Jonas Eriksson
