Both groups [of pundits] were critics, and that is the heart of the problem. If you are a pundit, you seem so smart when you are telling the President what he did wrong ... This [is] mostly BS. ~ Jeffrey A. Miller
Free Speech quotes by Jeffrey A. Miller
Corporations have free speech, but they can't speak like you and me. They don't have mouths or hands ... ~ Stephen Colbert
Free Speech quotes by Stephen Colbert
The fact that we're protected under that Constitution in exercising the right of free speech, it's a wonderful thing. You've got to come from somewhere else to realize how valuable it is. ~ Pat Oliphant
Free Speech quotes by Pat Oliphant
Everyone is in favor of free speech. Hardly a day passes without its being extolled, but some people's idea of it is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone else says anything back, that is an outrage. ~ Winston S. Churchill
Free Speech quotes by Winston S. Churchill
That said, the question remains: how to strike the balance between free speech and mutual respect in this mixed-up world, both blessed and cursed with instant communication? We should not fight fire with fire, threats with threats. ~ Timothy Garton Ash
Free Speech quotes by Timothy Garton Ash
Poking fun at other people's beliefs, while it may seem frivolous and offensive, is a non-negotiable right. It is a principle that underpins free speech, the basis for progress. ~ Maajid Nawaz
Free Speech quotes by Maajid Nawaz
Frankly, the people probably most interested in having computer lists on disk are junk mail vendors and solicitors. ~ Karen Hughes
Free Speech quotes by Karen Hughes
White free speech and white creative freedom have been founded on the constraint of others, and are not natural rights. ~ Zadie Smith
Free Speech quotes by Zadie Smith
By placing discretion in the hands of an official to grant or deny a license, such a statute creates a threat of censorship that by its very existence chills free speech. ~ Harry A. Blackmun
Free Speech quotes by Harry A. Blackmun
To give up pretensions is as blessed a relief as to get them ratified. ~ William James
Free Speech quotes by William James
I can't curse those who don't believe as I do. I can't express hate or disdain for those who criticize what I hold dear. I can't outshout, bully, or taunt them. I can't exercise the liberty of free speech because I answer to a higher law.
I answer to the Word of God. ~ Lori Hatcher
Free Speech quotes by Lori Hatcher
Democratization is not democracy; it is a slogan for the temporary liberalization handed down from an autocrat. Glasnost is not free speech; only free speech, constitutionally guaranteed, is free speech. ~ Gail Sheehy
Free Speech quotes by Gail Sheehy
Free speech is intended to protect the controversial and even outrageous word; and not just comforting platitudes too mundane to need protection. ~ Colin Powell
Free Speech quotes by Colin Powell
It's obvious that I come down on the side of free speech for anybody's work. ~ Salman Rushdie
Free Speech quotes by Salman Rushdie
A man may have the right to criticize the Government, but I'm hanged if he has a right to brazenly use his free speech to attack our way of life. More and more we see men in science and profession and academy abusing their privileges of expression by crying that their real liberties are threatened by patriotism. Is patriotism above these men? Do they have a right to express their views, to carry on their work, to be free men unless they are patriotic to our society? I say no sir! Loyalty is one of the prerogatives of freedom ~ James Aldridge
Free Speech quotes by James Aldridge
HENRY:
Leave me out of it. They don't count. Maybe Brodie got a raw deal, maybe he didn't. I don't know. It doesn't count. He's a lout with language. I can't help somebody who thinks, or thinks he thinks, that editing a newspaper is censorship, or that throwing bricks is a demonstration while building tower blocks is social violence, or that unpalatable statement is provocation while disrupting the speaker is the exercise of free speech…Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good any more, and Brodie knocks their corners off. I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little or make a poem which children will speak for you when you're dead.
Act II, Scene 5, HENRY and ANNIE ~ Tom Stoppard
Free Speech quotes by Tom Stoppard
Both free speech rights and property rights belong legally to individuals, but their real function is social, to benefit vast numbers of people who do not themselves exercise these rights. ~ Thomas Sowell
Free Speech quotes by Thomas Sowell
The nation relies upon public discussion as one of the indispensable means to attain correct solutions to problems of social welfare. Curtailment of free speech limits this open discussion. Our whole history teaches that adjustment of social relations through reason is possible when free speech is maintained. ~ Stanley Forman Reed
Free Speech quotes by Stanley Forman Reed
Women that speak against Islam are being labelled as islamophobic, as though our right to free speech is disregarded, when it comes down to an oppressive regime, which does not even recognise women as human... ~ Anita B. Sulser PhD
Free Speech quotes by Anita B. Sulser PhD
This deeply free and public space plays a vital role in our world, equally important in our digital age as in Greco-Roman times, when they were marketplaces for goods and ideas. As common ground, squares are equitable and democratic; they have played a fundamental role in the development of free speech. ~ Catie Marron
Free Speech quotes by Catie Marron
Where there is a great deal of free speech there is always a certain amount of foolish speech. ~ Winston Churchill
Free Speech quotes by Winston Churchill
The virtue of a democratic system with a [constitutionally guaranteed right to free speech] is that it readily enables the people, over time, to be persuaded that what they took for granted is not so, and to change their laws accordingly. ~ Antonin Scalia
Free Speech quotes by Antonin Scalia
It is amazing how many people act as if the right to free speech includes the right to be free of criticism for what you say - which means that other people should not have the same right to free speech that they claim for themselves. ~ Thomas Sowell
Free Speech quotes by Thomas Sowell
I prefer a little free speech to no free speech at all; but how many have free speech or the chance or the mind for it; and is not free speech here as elsewhere clamped down on in ratio of its freedom and danger? ~ James Agee
Free Speech quotes by James Agee
The restoration of free speech, free association and free press is almost the whole Swaraj. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Free Speech quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
About these developments George Orwell, in Nineteen Eighty-Four , was quite wrong. He described a new kind of state and police tyranny, under which the freedom of speech has become a deadly danger, science and its applications have regressed, horses are again plowing untilled fields, food and even sex have become scarce and forbidden commodities: a new kind of totalitarian puritanism, in short. But the very opposite has been happening. The fields are plowed not by horses but by monstrous machines, and made artificially fertile through sometimes poisonous chemicals; supermarkets are awash with luxuries, oranges, chocolates; travel is hardly restricted while mass tourism desecrates and destroys more and more of the world; free speech is not at all endangered but means less and less. ~ John Lukacs
Free Speech quotes by John Lukacs
A persistent preoccupation with "freedom of speech" to the neglect of other freedoms can diminish the shelter available for religion and other precious freedoms. The intertwining of all our freedoms is greater than we realize ... It may be true ... that the people of Sodom and Gomorrah had absolute free speech, but did they have anything worth saying? ~ Neal A. Maxwell
Free Speech quotes by Neal A. Maxwell
The best legacy I can leave my children is free speech, and the example of using it. ~ Philip Sidney
Free Speech quotes by Philip Sidney
It occurs to Blanche that English doesn't have French's useful distinction between libre, meaning that something's unconstrained, and gratuit, meaning that it costs nothing. Free thought, free speech, free love: the English word that Arthur was so fond of obscures the price of things. ~ Emma Donoghue
Free Speech quotes by Emma Donoghue
The Constitution guarantees free speech, but it doesn't guarantee listeners. ~ John C. Maxwell
Free Speech quotes by John C. Maxwell
Meiklejohn's position is that free speech in a democracy is not an absolute flowing from the boundless source of some presumed 'natural right.' It is a practical necessity of 'self-government by universal suffrage,' for if the citizens are not permitted to argue out the issues of government, how can they be what they must be in a democracy - the rulers as well as the ruled? ~ Max Lerner
Free Speech quotes by Max Lerner
But in reality the point of free speech is for the stuff that's over the line, and strikingly unbalanced. If free speech is only for polite persons of mild temperament within government-policed parameters, it isn't free at all. So screw that. ~ Mark Steyn
Free Speech quotes by Mark Steyn
we need to stand up for our own principles as liberals. Specifically, we need to say to offended Western Muslims (and their liberal supporters) that it is not we who must accommodate their beliefs and sensitivities. Rather, it is they who must learn to live with our commitment to free speech. ~ Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Free Speech quotes by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
The Founding Fathers' instructions were clear: The right to free speech includes bad speech; it means tolerance of ideas that many find obnoxious. ~ David Ignatius
Free Speech quotes by David Ignatius
I was very much influenced by a great book by the scholar Neil Richards called Intellectual Privacy, that [Louis] Brandeis changed his mind on the proper balance between dignity and free speech. ~ Jeffrey Rosen
Free Speech quotes by Jeffrey Rosen
Nobody has the right to not be offended. That right doesn't exist in any declaration I have ever read.
If you are offended it is your problem, and frankly lots of things offend lots of people.
I can walk into a bookshop and point out a number of books that I find very unattractive in what they say. But it doesn't occur to me to burn the bookshop down. If you don't like a book, read another book. If you start reading a book and you decide you don't like it, nobody is telling you to finish it.
To read a 600-page novel and then say that it has deeply offended you: well, you have done a lot of work to be offended. ~ Salman Rushdie
Free Speech quotes by Salman Rushdie
Beyond all the other reasons not to do it, free speech assaults always backfire: they transform bigots into martyrs. ~ Glenn Greenwald
Free Speech quotes by Glenn Greenwald
You must stand for free speech in the streets. ~ Mary Harris Jones
Free Speech quotes by Mary Harris Jones
Free speech gives us the ability to react vigorously with effective arguments and expose the weakness and misdirection of the other side's claims. ~ Rush Limbaugh
Free Speech quotes by Rush Limbaugh
There is no such thing as absolute free speech; there are only absolute rights of private property. Speech is circumscribed by private property rights. You may deliver a disquisition in my virtual or actual living room only if I permit you to so do. ~ Ilana Mercer
Free Speech quotes by Ilana Mercer
Free software' is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of 'free' as in 'free speech,' not as in 'free beer'. ~ Richard Stallman
Free Speech quotes by Richard Stallman
Speech doesn't corrupt. Money corrupts, and money isn't speech. ~ Russ Feingold
Free Speech quotes by Russ Feingold
From time to time our national history has been marred by forgetfulness of the Jeffersonian principle that restraint is at the heart of liberty. In 1789 the Federalists adopted Alien and Sedition Acts in a shabby political effort to isolate the Republic from the world and to punish political criticism as seditious libel. In 1865 the Radical Republicans sought to snare private conscience in a web of oaths and affirmations of loyalty. Spokesmen for the South did service for the Nation in resisting the petty tyranny of distrustful vengeance. In the 1920's the Attorney General of the United States degraded his office by hunting political radicals as if they were Salem witches. The Nation's only gain from his efforts were the classic dissents of Holmes and Brandeis.

In our own times, the old blunt instruments have again been put to work. The States have followed in the footsteps of the Federalists and have put Alien and Sedition Acts upon their statute books. An epidemic of loyalty oaths has spread across the Nation until no town or village seems to feel secure until its servants have purged themselves of all suspicion of non-conformity by swearing to their political cleanliness.

Those who love the twilight speak as if public education must be training in conformity, and government support of science be public aid of caution.

We have also seen a sharpening and refinement of abusive power. The legislative investigation, designed and often exercised ~ John F. Kennedy
Free Speech quotes by John F. Kennedy
You should protest about the views of people you disagree with over major moral issues, and argue them down, but you should not try to silence them, however repugnant you find them. That is the bitter pill free speech requires us to swallow. ~ Julian Baggini
Free Speech quotes by Julian Baggini
2003 case before the Supreme Court in which Nike claimed that it had the First Amendment right to lie in its corporate marketing, a variation on the First Amendment right of free speech. (Except in certain contract and law enforcement/court situations, it's perfectly legal for human persons to lie in the United States. ~ Thom Hartmann
Free Speech quotes by Thom Hartmann
When we lack the ability to talk back to entities that are culturally and politically powerful, the very foundations of free speech and democratic society are called into question. ~ Naomi Klein
Free Speech quotes by Naomi Klein
To have a right to do a thing is not at all the same as to be right in doing it. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Free Speech quotes by G.K. Chesterton
Free speech has a very small constituency on the modern campus, particularly if the speaker under attack is conservative. ~ John Leo
Free Speech quotes by John Leo
We must insist that free oratory is only the beginning of free speech; it is not the end, but a means to an end. The end is to find the truth. The practical justification of civil liberties is not that self-expression is one of the rights of man. It is that the examination of opinion is one of the
necessities of man. For experience tells us that it is only when freedom of opinion becomes the compulsion to debate that the seed which our fathers planted has produced its fruit. When that is
understood, freedom will be cherished not because it is a vent for our opinions but because it is the surest method of correcting them. ~ Walter Lippmann
Free Speech quotes by Walter Lippmann
While we generally believe in free speech and giving everyone as much ability to speak as possible, in practice there are lots of barriers to that, whether it's legal restrictions, technological restrictions or you can't share what you want if you don't have access to the internet. ~ Mark Zuckerberg
Free Speech quotes by Mark Zuckerberg
It's a great country: you can say whatever you like so long as it is strictly true
nobody will ever take you seriously. ~ Edward Abbey
Free Speech quotes by Edward Abbey
Speech should be fruitful as well as free. ~ Zechariah Chafee
Free Speech quotes by Zechariah Chafee
We Muslims must get used to the fact that people will criticize our religion, just as we criticize everyone else's religion for not being "true." Some people will choose to leave the faith, and we Muslims will need to come to terms with this, and to understand how to treat ex-Muslims not just with civility but with the utmost respect. Critiquing Islam, critiquing any idea, is not bigotry. "Islamophobia" is a troubled and inherently unhelpful term. Yes, hatred of Muslims by neo-Nazi-style groups does exist, and it is a form of cultural intolerance, but that must never be conflated with the free-speech right to critique Islam. Islam is, after all, an idea; we cannot expect its merits or demerits to be accepted if we cannot openly debate it. So I'm not one to try to avoid these issues. We have to address them head-on. ~ Sam Harris
Free Speech quotes by Sam Harris
I'm a free speech bigot. I don't like censorship; I just don't think it's a good thing. ~ Fred Wilson
Free Speech quotes by Fred Wilson
Better a thousandfold abuse of free speech than denial of free speech. ~ Charles Bradlaugh
Free Speech quotes by Charles Bradlaugh
So far as I am concerned I have no doctrinaire belief in free speech. In the interest of the war it is necessary to sacrifice some of it. ~ Walter Lippmann
Free Speech quotes by Walter Lippmann
No danger flowing from speech can be deemed clear and present unless the incidence of the evil apprehended is so imminent that it may befall before there is an opportunity for full discussion. Only an emergency can justify repression. ~ Louis D. Brandeis
Free Speech quotes by Louis D. Brandeis
Feminism, which is supposedly for everybody, apparently has no place for conservative women. Why would feminists need to exclude entire swaths of the population? Because they know their ideology cannot stand up to challenges, they know they themselves do not understand it, and they know that to accomplish their goals they cannot allow discussion to occur....To pretend that your ideology is impenetrable and the obvious answer to modern social problems and then to turn around and exclude people from the discussion only creates more holes in the theories themselves and serves to demonstrate the liberal superiority complex. ~ Chris Sardegna
Free Speech quotes by Chris Sardegna
To sin by silence, when they should protest, makes cowards of men. ~ Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Free Speech quotes by Ella Wheeler Wilcox
To protest free speech in the name of protecting women is dangerous and wrong. ~ Betty Friedan
Free Speech quotes by Betty Friedan
It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate. ~ Abe Fortas
Free Speech quotes by Abe Fortas
From gun shows, where they openly promote their product by imploring customers to buy "while you still can," to homegrown militias who apparently believe in their blessed little hearts that they, a group of overweight forty-and fifty-year-old men who have never even had Boy Scout–level training and can't jog a mile, are the protectors of America, the Second Amendment has by far got to be the most countercultured of all the amendments. Obviously, there are groups that take the First Amendment very seriously, but it's tough to imagine a group of soccer moms getting together on the weekends to discuss "tactics" on how to keep free speech alive and comparing notes on their sweet new semiautomatic megaphones they use to proudly shout about their rights at "free speech shows. ~ Trae Crowder
Free Speech quotes by Trae Crowder
Not slaves," said Halyard, chuckling patronizingly. "Citizens, employed by government. They have same rights as other citizens - free speech, freedom of worship, the right to vote. Before the war, they worked in the Ilium Works, controlling machines, but now machines control themselves much better. ~ Anonymous
Free Speech quotes by Anonymous
From the start, I've always admired Eminem's thinking. That's the reason I wanted to appear on the Grammys with him when I was asked. Eminem has the balls to say what he feels and to make offensive things funny. That's very necessary today in America, with people being muzzled and irony becoming a lost art. Artists like Eminem who use their free speech to get a point across are vitally important. There just aren't many people in the world with balls that big and talent that awesome. ~ Elton John
Free Speech quotes by Elton John
Satire dramatizes better than any other use of it, the inherent contradiction of free speech that it functions best when what is being said is at its most outrageous. ~ Tony Hendra
Free Speech quotes by Tony Hendra
I should say here, because some in Washington like to dream up ways to control the Internet, that we don't need to 'control' free speech, we need to control ourselves. ~ Peggy Noonan
Free Speech quotes by Peggy Noonan
If there were a verb meaning "to believe falsely," it would not have any significant first person, present indicative. ~ Ludwig Wittgenstein
Free Speech quotes by Ludwig Wittgenstein
The truth is libraries are raucous clubhouses for free speech, controversy and community. ~ Paula Poundstone
Free Speech quotes by Paula Poundstone
A theory deeply etched in our law [is that] a free society prefers to punish the few who abuse the rights of free speech after they break the law rather than to throttle them and all others beforehand. ~ Clarence Thomas
Free Speech quotes by Clarence Thomas
Whatever doubt there may be as to the quality or purpose of our free speech we certainly have ample volumes in production. ~ Herbert Hoover
Free Speech quotes by Herbert Hoover
Stand-up comedy and comedy in general is the ultimate form of free speech, because you get to poke holes in all the pretentious bubbles politicians and pundits and popes and pretenders try to float over our heads. ~ Denis Leary
Free Speech quotes by Denis Leary
When there is a world scarcity of any commodity, whether it's food or free speech, then the whole world must go on rations in order that eventually the whole world may have it again in plenty. ~ Jan Struther
Free Speech quotes by Jan Struther
If liberalism is to mean anything at all, it is duty bound to support without hesitation the dissenting individual over the group, the heretic over the orthodox, innovation over stagnation, and free speech over offense. ~ Maajid Nawaz
Free Speech quotes by Maajid Nawaz
Ye cannot make us now lesse capable, lesse knowing, lesse eagarly pursuing of the Truth, unlesse ye first make yourselves that made us so, lesse the lovers, lesse the founders of our true Liberty. We can grow ignorant again, brutish, formall, and slavish as ye found us, but you then must first become that which ye cannot be, oppressive, arbitrary, and tyrannous as they were from whom ye have free'd us. ~ John Milton
Free Speech quotes by John Milton
I believe in markets doing what they do well, which is to develop technology, and letting citizens do what they ideally do well, which is to set policy. ~ Esther Dyson
Free Speech quotes by Esther Dyson
Free speech is meaningless unless it tolerates the speech that we hate. ~ Henry Hyde
Free Speech quotes by Henry Hyde
I think the reality is that copyright law has for a very long time been a tiny little part of American jurisprudence, far removed from traditional First Amendment jurisprudence, and that made sense before the Internet. Now there is an unavoidable link between First Amendment interests and the scope of copyright law. The legal system is recognizing for the first time the extraordinary expanse of copyright regulation and its regulation of ordinary free-speech activities. ~ Lawrence Lessig
Free Speech quotes by Lawrence Lessig
<> I don't care if they are reading our mail. Bring it on, Tron! I dare you. Try to take away my freedom of expression. I'm a journalist. A free-speech warrior. I serve in the Army of the First Amendment. I didn't take this job for the bad money, and the regressive health care coverage. I'm here for the truth, the sunshine, the casting open of closed doors! ~ Rainbow Rowell
Free Speech quotes by Rainbow Rowell
We need a free media, not just freedom of speech. ~ Tom Scholz
Free Speech quotes by Tom Scholz
Probably no other country in the 1920s - certainly not the United States, with its stark repression of the Left, vicious antiunion policies, and legally enshrined racism - had so wide a range of free speech, such a vital public sphere, as Germany. ~ Eric D. Weitz
Free Speech quotes by Eric D. Weitz
I don't know, people take chances on stage. It's a big free speech zone, a comedy show. So sometimes things happen, you say things that are a little bit off the edge. ~ Drew Carey
Free Speech quotes by Drew Carey
Criminalizing offensive speech is a far greater and essential danger to freedom than terrorism is. Anybody who wants to criminalize speech that they find offensive differs from the terrorists only in degree, not in kind. ~ Andy Levy
Free Speech quotes by Andy Levy
It is depressing to have to point out, yet again, that there is a distinction between having the legal right to say something & having the moral right not to be held accountable for what you say. Being asked to apologise for saying something unconscionable is not the same as being stripped of the legal right to say it. It's really not very f-cking complicated. Cry "free speech" in such contexts, you are demanding the right to speak any bilge you wish without apology or fear of comeback. You are demanding not legal rights but an end to debate about and criticism of what you say. When did bigotry get so needy? ~ China Mieville
Free Speech quotes by China Mieville
My hope is that the Chinese government will come to realise that it is futile to repress free speech, and that contrary to what they believe a regime's strength rests not its suppression of a plurality of opinions and ideas, but in its capacity and willingness to encourage them. ~ Ma Jian
Free Speech quotes by Ma Jian
Now is the time to draw a clean, clear, bright line and say if you are engaging in speech over the Internet you do not have to check with your lawyer or your accountant. You are a free American, and you have the opportunity to engage in free speech over the Internet. ~ John Doolittle
Free Speech quotes by John Doolittle
If five years from now we solve the access problem, but what we're hearing is all encrypted, I'll probably, if I'm still here, be talking about that in a very different way: the objective is the same. The objective is for us to get those conversations whether they're by an alligator clip or ones and zeros. Whoever they are, whatever they are, I need them. ~ Louis J. Freeh
Free Speech quotes by Louis J. Freeh
That I have the right to express myself freely at all times in all circumstances entails the idea that free speech is a 'basic human right' possessed by each individual, and, as such, trumps the interests of the society or group, including my neighbour. ~ Tom Stoppard
Free Speech quotes by Tom Stoppard
He also said that if anyone did anything to mess up the rest of the testing, he was going to call 911 personally.
Yeah, like that wouldn't make it into the nightly news again: WHEELCHAIR-BOUND CANCER PATIENT ARRESTED FOR FREE SPEECH. ~ Jordan Sonnenblick
Free Speech quotes by Jordan Sonnenblick
Free speech is a bourgeois prejudice. ~ Vladimir Lenin
Free Speech quotes by Vladimir Lenin
To suppress free speech is a double wrong. It violates the rights of the hearer as well as those of the speaker. ~ Frederick Douglass
Free Speech quotes by Frederick Douglass
There is no danger is letting people have their say ... There is a danger when you try to stop them from saying it. ~ Helen Gahagan Douglas
Free Speech quotes by Helen Gahagan Douglas
I realized that the legal system was corrupt when I went to court and the judge imposed a very short time limit on my evidence submission before removing my legal rights to free speech. ~ Steven Magee
Free Speech quotes by Steven Magee
There are no bad haircuts in cyberspace. ~ Dave Barry
Free Speech quotes by Dave Barry
Feminists often pretend to be angry and offended in order to win debates or, I should say, prevent debates from ever happening. If you can act angry and offended, especially on a college campus, you can shut down the other side using a speech code. ~ Mike Adams
Free Speech quotes by Mike Adams
They treated me like I'm a fascist, yet they were the ones trying to deny me my free speech. That's the left today. ~ Jeanine Pirro
Free Speech quotes by Jeanine Pirro
The real test of this country's perimeters of freedom of speech will be found if or when a person can freely discuss racism without being subject to intellectually dishonest attempts to undermine their arguments. If free speech, as so many insist, includes being prepared to hear opinions that you don't like, then let's open up the parameters of what we consider acceptable debate. ~ Reni Eddo-Lodge
Free Speech quotes by Reni Eddo-Lodge
The First Amendment protects our freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to practice religion, to peacefully assemble, and the right to petition the government. This is true tolerance as defined by our founding documents. This is the right of all American citizens. Does the right of free speech end on college campuses of higher learning? Does it end when you step into a designated "safe space" at your local university? Does it end if your choice of words is construed to be a "trigger warning" when you walk into a classroom?

The answer obviously should be no. Unfortunately, the answer today on most college campuses is yes. And take this warning seriously: it won't end there.

The commentator Andrew Sullivan has noted the student anti-free-speech movement "manifests itself . . . almost as a religion". He continues:

"It posits a classic orthodoxy through which all of human experience is explained--and through which all speech must be filtered. Its version of original sin is the power of some identity groups over others. To overcome this sin, you need first to confess, i.e., "check your privilege", and subsequently live your life and order your thoughts in a way that keeps this sin at bay. This sin goes so deep into your psyche, especially if you are white or male or straight, that a profound conversion is required.

It operates as a religion in one other critical dimension: If you happen to see the world in a different way, if ~ Everett Piper
Free Speech quotes by Everett Piper
One man's blasphemy doesn't override other people's free-speech rights, their freedom to publish, freedom of thought. ~ Dan Savage
Free Speech quotes by Dan Savage
Whatever modern democracies may tell themselves about their commitment to free speech and to diversity of opinion, the values of a given society will uncannily match those of whichever organizations have the scale to pay for runs of thirty-second slots around the nightly news bulletin. ~ Alain De Botton
Free Speech quotes by Alain De Botton
The propensity to say and do dumb things, and even wicked things, is simply part of human nature. One can blame the Church or Christianity for such things only on the thoroughly unwarranted assumption that Christianity claims to have abolished human nature. The truth is that Christianity, and the Catholic Church in particular, is the mother of Western civilization, with all it strengths and weaknesses, including its frequently exaggerated penchant for self-criticism. Like others who know what it is to be a mother, she is not surprised, although sometimes disappointed, when she is blamed for everything and thanked for nothing. ~ Richard John Neuhaus
Free Speech quotes by Richard John Neuhaus
