Cathy, don't look so defeated. She was only trying to put us down
again.
Maybe nothing did work out right for her, but that doesn't mean we are
doomed. Let's go forth tomorrow with no great expectations of finding
perfection. Then, expecting only a small share of happiness, we won't
be disappointed. ~ V.C. Andrews
Great Expectations quotes by V.C. Andrews
There's no shortage of orphans in 19th-century literature, but it's hard to find a single happy, communicative, functional parental relationship in the whole of 'Great Expectations,' even among the minor characters. ~ David Nicholls
Great Expectations quotes by David Nicholls
Dare for a greater life, you will get it. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Expectations quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
Ladies and gentlemen, on the occasion of my election I received many letters from people representing all segments of the population and all professions, especially from the younger generation, linking my inauguration with great - far too great - expectations. ~ Gustav Heinemann
Great Expectations quotes by Gustav Heinemann
My young sisters, we have such hope for you. We have such great expectations for you. Don't settle for less than what the Lord wants you to be ...
Give me a young woman who loves home and family, who reads and ponders the scriptures daily, who has a burning testimony of the Book of Mormon ... Give me a young woman who is virtuous and who has maintained her personal purity, who will not settle for less than a temple marriage, and I will give you a young woman who will perform miracles for the Lord now and throughout eternity. ~ Ezra Taft Benson
Great Expectations quotes by Ezra Taft Benson
My guiding star always is, Get hold of portable property. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
Some medical beast had revived tar-water in those days as a fine medicine, and Mrs. Joe always kept a supply of it in the cupboard; having a belief in its virtues correspondent to its nastiness. At the best of times, so much of this elixir was administered to me as a choice restorative, that I was conscious of going about, smelling like a new fence. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
Heaven knows we need never be ashamed of our tears, for they are rain upon the blinding dust of earth, overlying our hard hearts. I was better after I had cried, than before
more sorry, more aware of my own ingratitude, more gentle. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
Enthusiastic work is daring spirit. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Expectations quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
'Great Expectations' is one of the greatest stories. ~ Jeremy Irvine
Great Expectations quotes by Jeremy Irvine
Mrs. Pocket was at home, and was in a little difficulty, on account of the baby's having been accommodated with a needle case to keep him quiet during the unaccountable absence (with a relative in the Foot Guards) of Millers. And more needles were missing than it could be regarded as quite wholesome for a patient of such tender years either to apply externally or to take as a tonic. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
She smells like passion; like irresistible desire and temptation. She's eclipsing in a daytime and shining at night. She smells like nakedness, even when she is warmly dressed. She has wild eyes. She smells like seduction; she is both an apple and a snake. She smells like great expectations; like success; like centuries-old glory. She's like the last refuge. She smells like a final wish. She smells like a new beginning. ~ Damian Corvium
Great Expectations quotes by Damian Corvium
We changed again, and yet again, and it was now too late and too far to go back, and I went on. And the mists had all solemnly risen now, and the world lay spread before me. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
These are the pieces of my youth,
the small secrets and the not-so-great expectations
that defined my coming of age. ~ Tablo
Great Expectations quotes by Tablo
Surprisingly, it was not an American but a British company that opened an amusement park in 2007 called Dickens World, located in the English county of Kent, complete with an Ebenezer Scrooge Haunted House, a Great Expectations Boat Ride and the as-advertised 'costumed Dickensian characters.' ~ Matthew Pearl
Great Expectations quotes by Matthew Pearl
Brag is good dog, holdfast is better! ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
Suffice it to say I was compelled to create this group in order to find everyone who is, let's say, borrowing liberally from my INESTIMABLE FOLIO OF CANONICAL MASTERPIECES (sorry, I just do that sometimes), and get you all together. It's the least I could do.

I mean, seriously. Those soliloquies in Moby-Dick? Sooo Hamlet and/or Othello, with maybe a little Shylock thrown in. Everyone from Pip in Great Expectations to freakin' Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre mentions my plays, sometimes completely mangling my words in nineteenth-century middle-American dialect for humorous effect (thank you, Sir Clemens). Many people (cough Virginia Woolf cough) just quote me over and over again without attribution. I hear James Joyce even devoted a chapter of his giant novel to something called the "Hamlet theory," though do you have some sort of newfangled English? It looks like gobbledygook to me. The only people who don't seek me out are like Chaucer and Dante and those ancient Greeks. For whatever reason.

And then there are the titles. The Sound and the Fury? Mine. Infinite Jest? Mine. Proust, Nabokov, Steinbeck, and Agatha Christie all have titles that are me-inspired. Brave New World? Not just the title, but half the plot has to do with my work. Even Edgar Allan Poe named a character after my Tempest's Prospero (though, not surprisingly, things didn't turn out well for him!). I'm like the star to every wandering bark, the arrow of every compass, the buzzard to every haw ~ Sarah Schmelling
Great Expectations quotes by Sarah Schmelling
How do you get through any of your classes?" Cath had hours of assigned reading, almost every single night.
"Coping strategies."
"Such as?"
"I record my lectures and listen to them later. Professors usually cover most of what's on the test in class. And I find study groups."
"And you lean on Reagan --"
"Not just Reagan." He grinned. "I'm really good at quickly identifying the smartest girl in every class."
Cath frowned at him. "God, Levi, that's so exploitive."
"How is it exploitive? I don't make them wear miniskirts. I don't call them 'baby.' I just say, 'Hello, smart girl, would you like to talk to me about Great Expectations?'"
"They probably think you like them."
"I do like them."
"If it wasn't exploitive, you'd harass smart boys, too --"
"I do, in a pinch. Do you feel exploited, Cather?" He was still grinning at her over his coffee cup.
"No," she said, "I know that you don't like me."
"You don't know anything."
"So, this is old hat for you? Finding a girl to read a whole book to you?"
He shook his head. "No, this is a first."
"Well, now I feel exploited," she said, setting her drink down and reaching for the book.
"Thank you," he said.
"Chapter seven --"
"I'm serious." Levi pulled the book down and looked at her. "Thank you."
Cath held his eyes for a few seconds. Then she nodded and pulled back the book. ~ Rainbow Rowell
Great Expectations quotes by Rainbow Rowell
He was a prosperous old bachelor, and his open window looked into a prosperous little garden and orchard, and there was a prosperous iron safe let into the wall at the side of his fireplace, and I did not doubt that heaps of his prosperity were put away in it in bags. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
The true power is in the imagination which dares to speculate upon that which is not yet. The imagination, backed by great expectations, can bring about almost any reality within the range of probabilities. ~ Seth
Great Expectations quotes by Seth
What's something every teen should know?
MEANING OF LIFE ENACT,PERSONAL EXPERIENCE TO FACE LIFE EVENTS STORED IN FOR SELF,DO ASSIST OTHERS,RESPECT AND GUARD PARENTS AT OLD AGE AND TAKE THEIR BLESSINGS DAILY FOR FUTURE LIFE GREAT EXPECTATIONS. ~ Various
Great Expectations quotes by Various
So, throughout life, our worst weaknesses and meannesses are usually committed for the sake of the people whom we most despise. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
I remember the absolute joy I used to get out of writing. The purity of imagining something and then putting it down on paper - it was such a pleasure. I read whatever I could get my hands on, from 'Great Expectations' to 'The Thorn Birds.' ~ Liane Moriarty
Great Expectations quotes by Liane Moriarty
The law of self-fulfilling prophecy says that you get what you expect. So why not create great expectations and the highest vision possible of yourself and your world? ~ Mark Victor Hansen
Great Expectations quotes by Mark Victor Hansen
It is not important for life to meet your great expectations. What is important is that you hold high expectations of yourself and meet them greatly. ~ Roopleen
Great Expectations quotes by Roopleen
Great expectations are better than a poor possession. ~ Miguel De Cervantes
Great Expectations quotes by Miguel De Cervantes
A period of transition to a new quality in all spheres of society's life is accompanied by painful phenomena. When we were initiating perestroika we failed to properly assess and foresee everything. Our society turned out to be hard to move off the ground, not ready for major changes which affect people's vital interests and make them leave behind everything to which they had become accustomed over many years. In the beginning we imprudently generated great expectations, without taking into account the fact that it takes time for people to realize that all have to live and work differently, to stop expecting that new life would be given from above. ~ Mikhail Gorbachev
Great Expectations quotes by Mikhail Gorbachev
'Great Expectations' has been described as 'Dickens's harshest indictment of society.' Which it is. After all, it's about money. About not having enough money; about the fever of the getting of money; about having too much money; about the taint of money. ~ Felix Dennis
Great Expectations quotes by Felix Dennis
All I want, oh dear friend of mine, is for you to go out with someone. Do something, even if it's not the magical, wonderful thing you had in mind. Don't sit around for one more second pining away for some fantasy that might never come along, because it might not even exist. ~ Lauren Morrill
Great Expectations quotes by Lauren Morrill
Seize every opportunity and make it great. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Expectations quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
So new to him," she muttered, "so old to me; so strange to him, so familiar to me; so melancholy to both of us! ... ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
Great expectations are placed on this generation for the establishment of peaceful and neighborly relations in the North Caucasus. ~ Yunus-bek Yevkurov
Great Expectations quotes by Yunus-bek Yevkurov
I had never seen anything like New York, and its newness held the promise of my future: dense with the experience I craved - romantic, urbane, intellectual. Looking back on that moment, I believe I was saved from disappointment by the nature of my "great expectations." I honestly wasn't burdened with conventional notions of finding security and happiness. At that time of my life, even when I was "happy," it wasn't because I expected it. That was for characters less romantic than myself. I didn't expect to be rich, well fed, and kindly treated by all. I wanted to live deeply and fully, to embrace whatever the city held for me. ~ Siri Hustvedt
Great Expectations quotes by Siri Hustvedt
Anyhow, high school is just…The. Worst."

"Funny that you became a high school teacher, then," I say, and she laughs again.

"Something I should talk to my therapist about. Speaking of which, you could speak to the school counselor if you want. We have a psychiatrist on staff. A life coach too."

"Seriously?"

"I know, right? Finding ways to justify the tuition. Anyhow, if not them, feel free to come talk to me anytime. Students like you are the reason I chose to teach."

"Thanks."

"By the way, I look forward to your and Ethan's 'Waste Land' paper. You're two of my brightest students. I have great expectations." Dickens is next on the syllabus. A literary pun. No wonder Mrs. Pollack was destroyed in high school.

"We intend to reach wuthering heights," I say, and as I walk by, she reaches her hand up, and I can't help it - dorks unite! nerd power! - I give her a high five on my way out. ~ Julie Buxbaum
Great Expectations quotes by Julie Buxbaum
Thus, we may observe, it is usual with God to smite us in those very comforts which stole away too much of the love and delight of our souls from God; to cross us in those things from which we raised up too great expectations of comfort. ~ John Flavel
Great Expectations quotes by John Flavel
Believe in yourself, believe in something higher than yourself, be selfless, exercise, have great expectations and execute day by day. ~ Eric Anthony
Great Expectations quotes by Eric Anthony
To win, you have to believe you will win. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Expectations quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
I've been a fool to allow dreams to become great expectations. ~ Tim Rice
Great Expectations quotes by Tim Rice
I have never had great expectations of my performance or of a film. I try not to think about the outcome. If you look that far ahead, it sort of taints your choices as an actor. I try as
hard as I can to believe that no one is ever going to see it and that it's not even a movie. Then you can allow yourself to bare more. Then, once a project is done, I tend to forget about it
until it comes out. ~ Heath Ledger
Great Expectations quotes by Heath Ledger
My father's family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip. So, I called myself Pip, and came to be called Pip. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
A man would die tonight of lying out on the marshes, I thought. And then I looked at the stars, and considered how awful it would be for a man to turn his face up to them as he froze to death, and see no help or pitty in all the glittering multitude. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
The power of great thoughts, timeless possibilities. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Expectations quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
I should not have minded that, if they would only have left me alone. But they wouldn't leave me alone. They seemed to think the opportunity lost, if they failed to point the conversation at me, every now and then, and stick the point into me. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
I have great expectations for the future, because the past was highly overrated. ~ Sylvester Stallone
Great Expectations quotes by Sylvester Stallone
I built the solenoid and with great expectations late one evening I pressed the switch which sent a current of 40 amperes through the coil. The result was spectacular-a deafening explosion, the apparatus disappeared, all windows were blown in or out, a wall caved in, and thus ended my pioneering experiment on liquid hydrogen cooled coils! ~ Nicholas Kurti
Great Expectations quotes by Nicholas Kurti
I wanted to make Joe less ignorant and common, that he might be worthier of my society and less open to Estella's reproach. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
It is a principle of his that no man who was not a true gentleman at heart, ever was, since the world began, a true gentleman in manner. He says, no varnish can hide the grain of the wood; and that the more varnish you put on, the more the grain will express itself. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
We all have an equal interest in stability and security throughout Europe. The years the OSCE has existed, and particularly this year, have given rise to great expectations and at the same time to powerful disappointments. ~ Boris Yeltsin
Great Expectations quotes by Boris Yeltsin
There is greatness in everyone.
Look within yourself and discover your greatness. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Expectations quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
I've had stupid teachers, lazy teachers, boring teachers, teachers who were teachers because their parents were and they hadn't the imagination to think of anything else, teachers who were teachers because of cowardice, because of fear, because of the holidays, because of the pensions, because they were never called to account, never had to actually be any good, ones who could not survive in any other profession, who were not aware they had trod on butterflies. But none of those compared to Mr Maurice Crossan. He was the one who first stamped on my brother's soul. He was dark, as they say here. For those who want more of him visit the dark character of Orlick Dolge in Great Expectations and cross that with a ginger-headed weasel. ~ Niall Williams
Great Expectations quotes by Niall Williams
I'll tell you what love is" I said, "It is blind devotion, unquestioning self humiliation, utter submission, trust and belief against yourself and against the whole world, giving up your heart and soul to the smiter. ~ Jasper Fforde
Great Expectations quotes by Jasper Fforde
If new species arise very rapidly in small, peripherally isolated local populations, then the great expectation of insensibly graded fossil sequences is a chimera. A new species does not evolve in the area of its ancestors; it does not arise from the slow transformation of all its forbears.
co-author with Niles Eldridge ~ Stephen Jay Gould
Great Expectations quotes by Stephen Jay Gould
The possessor of such great expectations, - farewell, monotonous acquaintances of my childhood, henceforth I was for London and greatness; ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
The Montreux Palace Hotel was built in an age when it was thought that things would last. It is on the very shores of Switzerland's Lake Geneva, its balconies and iron railings look across the water, its yellow-ocher awnings are a touch of color in the winter light. It is like a great sanitarium or museum. There are Bechstein pianos in the public rooms, a private silver collection, a Salon de Bridge. This is the hotel where the novelist Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov and his wife, Véra, live. They have been here for 14 years. One imagines his large and brooding reflection in the polished glass of bookcases near the reception desk where there are bound volumes of the Illustrated London News from the year 1849 to 1887, copies of Great Expectations, The Chess Games of Greco and a book called Things Past, by the Duchess of Sermoneta.

Though old, the hotel is marvelously kept up and, in certain portions, even modernized. Its business now is mainly conventions and, in the summer, tours, but there is still a thin migration of old clients, ancient couples and remnants of families who ask for certain rooms when they come and sometimes certain maids. For Nabokov, a man who rode as a child on the great European express trains, who had private tutors, estates, and inherited millions which disappeared in the Russian revolution, this is a return to his sources. It is a place to retire to, with Visconti's Mahler and the long-dead figures of La Belle Epoque, Edward VII, d'Annunzi ~ James Salter
Great Expectations quotes by James Salter

He lives in us, He gives us grace and power to accomplish far greater things. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita

Great Expectations quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
To the last hour of my life, you cannot choose but remain part of my character, part of the little good in me, part of the evil. ~ Cassandra Clare
Great Expectations quotes by Cassandra Clare
I was always treated as if I had insisted on being born, in opposition to the dictates of reason, religion, and morality, and against the dissuadinig arguments of my best friends. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
I snorted. "They still make you read Dickens in school? Great Expectations?" "Yeah." "You can stay at home and hide if you want - and wind up like Miss Havisham," I said. "Watching life through a window and obsessed with how things might have been." "Dear God," she said. "You've just made Dickens relevant to my life." "Weird, right?" I asked her, nodding. ~ Jim Butcher
Great Expectations quotes by Jim Butcher
Yet he would smoke his pipe at the Battery with a far more sagacious air then anywhere else - even with a learned air - as if he considered himself to be advancing immensely. Dear fellow, I hope he did. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
I am in the U.K. for inspiration because I'm doing a follow on series to 'The Infernal Devices,' called 'The Last Hours.' It's a re-telling of 'Great Expectations' with 'Shadowhunters' ... because why not! It's set in 1903, so I'm doing a lot of locational research. ~ Cassandra Clare
Great Expectations quotes by Cassandra Clare
It was understood that nothing of a tender nature could possibly be confided to old Barley, by reason of his being totally unequal to the consideration of any subject more psychological than gout, rum, and purser's stores. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
The secret was such an old one now, had so grown into me and become a part of myself, that I could not tear it away. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
I have a lack of fear, whereas in the past the fear of failure was a powerful motivator. Anyway, I have great expectations for the future, but I just don't know if I'm the monarch of all I survey. ~ Sylvester Stallone
Great Expectations quotes by Sylvester Stallone
If you expect to reach the goal of perfection, never look at the cup as being half empty, see it as being half full. ~ Barbara Hart
Great Expectations quotes by Barbara Hart
Finally, while I don't want to disparage the traditional novel--I still prefer Dickens's Great Expectations over Kathy Acker's Great Expectations, though I'll take Lauren Fairbanks's Sister Carrie over Dreiser's any day--there's a whole other world of novels out there most people never even hear of, much less read. Let's go see. ~ Steven Moore
Great Expectations quotes by Steven Moore
She stood looking at me, and, of course, I stood looking at her.
"Am I pretty?"
"Yes; I think you are very pretty."
"Am I insulting?"
"Not so much so as you were last time," said I.
"Not so much so?"
"No."
She fired when she asked the last question, and she slapped my face with such force as she had, when I answered it.
"Now," said she. "You little course monster, what do you think of me now?"
"I shall not tell you."
"Because you are going to tell upstairs. Is that it?"
"No," said I. "That is not it."
"Why don't you cry again, you little wretch?"
"Because I'll never cry for you again," said I. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
We all give up great expectations along the way. ~ Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Great Expectations quotes by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
I recently discovered that a friend who was re-reading Bleak House had done no other Dickens apart from Barnaby Ridge. That's just weird. I shamed and nagged him into picking up Great Expectations instead. But when I tried to recall anything about it other than its excellence, I failed. Maybe there was something about a peculiar stepfather? Or was that This Boy's Life? And I realized that, as this is true of just about every book I consumed between the ages of, say fifteen to forty, I havent even read the books I think I've read. I can't tell you how depressing this is. What's the fucking point? ~ Nick Hornby
Great Expectations quotes by Nick Hornby
Embrace each new day with great expectations. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Expectations quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
She had curiously thoughtful and attentive eyes; eyes that were very pretty and very good. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
It may be only small injustice that the child can be exposed to; but the child is small, and its world is small, and its rocking-horse stands as many hands high, according to scale, as a big-boned Irish hunter. ~ Charles Dickens
Great Expectations quotes by Charles Dickens
At the end when you cut to the bone,we're all essentially the same; we are women of great expectations ~ Inji Amr
Great Expectations quotes by Inji Amr
If it weren't for the great Scottish missionary David Livingstone, the Yao and Chewa might still be at odds today. Livingstone helped end slavery, opened Malawi to trade, and built good schools and missions. Young men became educated and earned money, and once these economic opportunities were available to all, our two tribes had little reason to fight. Today we consider the Yao our brothers and sisters. My ~ William Kamkwamba
Great Expectations quotes by William Kamkwamba
Martin Silenus sniffed a jar, found a knife on the sandwich plate, and added great dollops of horseradish to his sandwich. His eyes sparkled with tears as he ate. ~ Dan Simmons
Great Expectations quotes by Dan Simmons
A Swedish minister having assembled the chiefs of the Susquehanna Indians, made a sermon to them, acquainting them with the principal historical facts on which our religion is founded - such as the fall of our first parents by eating an apple, the coming of Christ to repair the mischief, his miracles and suffering, etc. When he had finished an Indian orator stood up to thank him.

'What you have told us,' says he, 'is all very good. It is indeed bad to eat apples. It is better to make them all into cider. We are much obliged by your kindness in coming so far to tell us those things which you have heard from your mothers. In return, I will tell you some of those we have heard from ours.

'In the beginning, our fathers had only the flesh of animals to subsist on, and if their hunting was unsuccessful they were starving. Two of our young hunters, having killed a deer, made a fire in the woods to boil some parts of it. When they were about to satisfy their hunger, they beheld a beautiful young woman descend from the clouds and seat herself on that hill which you see yonder among the Blue Mountains.

'They said to each other, "It is a spirit that perhaps has smelt our broiling venison and wishes to eat of it; let us offer some to her." They presented her with the tongue; she was pleased with the taste of it and said: "Your kindness shall be rewarded; come to this place after thirteen moons, and you will find something that will be of great benefit i ~ Benjamin Franklin
Great Expectations quotes by Benjamin Franklin
Sites like Funny or Die and College Humor are great, but I'd say it's appealing to 80% men and 20% women. ~ Zooey Deschanel
Great Expectations quotes by Zooey Deschanel
Sometimes, we need an obstacle to challenge us and push us further than we would if things were always status quo. I'd say one example is the market crashing. It's like, just when we started to get into a rhythm, everything changed! But, it taught us a great deal about how we do business and how we can improve. ~ John Varvatos
Great Expectations quotes by John Varvatos
Every choice is yours. You and you alone bear the responsibility of your decisions. No matter how great or small they may be. - THE CHRONICLES OF SATRAYA ~ T.R. Williams
Great Expectations quotes by T.R. Williams
A great restaurant doesn't distinguish itself by how few mistakes it makes but by how well they handle those mistakes. ~ Danny Meyer
Great Expectations quotes by Danny Meyer
Happiness is a continuation of happenings which are not resisted. ~ Deepak Chopra
Great Expectations quotes by Deepak Chopra
Napoleon I., whose career had the quality of a duel against the whole
of Europe, disliked duelling between the officers of his army. The great military emperor was not a washbuckler, and had little respect for tradition.

Nevertheless, a story of duelling, which became a legend in the army, runs through the epic of imperial wars. To the surprise and admiration of their fellows, two officers, like insane artists trying to gild refined gold or paint the lily, pursued a private contest through the years of universal carnage.
They were officers of cavalry, and their connection with the high-spirited but fanciful animal which carries men into battle seems particularly appropriate.
It would be difficult to imagine for heroes of this legend two officers of infantry of the line, for example, whose fantasy is tamed by much walking exercise, and whose valour necessarily must be of a more plodding kind. As to gunners or engineers, whose heads are kept cool on a diet of mathematics, it is simply unthinkable.

The names of the two officers were Feraud and D'Hubert, and they were both lieutenants in a regiment of hussars, but not in the same regiment. [The duel] ~ Joseph Conrad
Great Expectations quotes by Joseph Conrad
Ronald Reagan felt very great regret about the deficits to which he contributed on his watch. ~ Eugene Jarecki
Great Expectations quotes by Eugene Jarecki
Perhaps," she said, "to be able to learn things quickly isn't everything. To be kind is worth a great deal to other people. ~ Frances Hodgson Burnett
Great Expectations quotes by Frances Hodgson Burnett
It is very natural for young men to be vehement, acrimonious and severe. For as they seldom comprehend at once all the consequences of a position, or perceive the difficulties by which cooler and more experienced reasoners are restrained from confidence, they form their conclusions with great precipitance. Seeing nothing that can darken or embarrass the question, they expect to find their own opinion universally prevalent, and are inclined to impute uncertainty and hesitation to want of honesty, rather than of knowledge. ~ Samuel Johnson
Great Expectations quotes by Samuel Johnson
Science properly done is one of the humanities, as a fine physics teacher once said. The point of science is to help us understand what we are and how we got here, and for this we need the great stories: the tale of how, once upon a time, there was a Big Bang; the Darwinian epic of the evolution of life on Earth; and now the story we are just beginning to learn how to tell... ~ Daniel C. Dennett
Great Expectations quotes by Daniel C. Dennett
It is clear the future holds great opportunities. It also holds pitfalls. The trick will be to avoid the pitfalls, seize the opportunities, and get back home by six o'clock. ~ Woody Allen
Great Expectations quotes by Woody Allen
It is easy at any moment to resign the possession of a great fortune; to acquire it is difficult and arduous ~ Livy
Great Expectations quotes by Livy
I used to walk to school with my nose buried in a book. ~ Jeremy Collier
Great Expectations quotes by Jeremy Collier
I don't feel badly about that. There's a lot of energy on the golf course. The guys are playing great. I like the pairings in the afternoon. I'm going to take what we've got. ~ Hal Sutton
Great Expectations quotes by Hal Sutton
Nothing so upholds the laws as the punishment of persons whose rank is as great as their crime. ~ Cardinal Richelieu
Great Expectations quotes by Cardinal Richelieu
I care not for the body which may rot. Yet, for the transgression of the spirit, of moral ethics, of life, liberty and the soul itself, I must and shall cross the line of battle or lose the very reason not to. ~ The Great Pacifist
Great Expectations quotes by The Great Pacifist
To reach great heights, we must refuse the negative opinions of people and passionately pursue your destiny. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Expectations quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
The basic lesson of Indian history was already established. Material power like kingdoms, and kings, including Alexander the Great, comes and goes. But spiritual power, embodied in religion and caste and spiritual unity with Brahman, the changeless essence of the universe, lasts forever. Prime ~ Arthur Herman
Great Expectations quotes by Arthur Herman
Ladies and gentlemen, the great number seven, Mickey Mantle. ~ Mel Allen
Great Expectations quotes by Mel Allen
It is a privilege to be recognized by FDLA. I am a staunch believer that as a member of the Bar, we have the great privilege to represent clients in all facets of our practice, and that includes making the commitment to represent clients for whom access to representation and ultimately justice is limited by economics. As all of the 20 for 20 honorees have done, stepping up to meet that commitment is at the heart of what it means to be a lawyer. I hope the inspiring stories and contributions of my fellow honorees will shine a bright light on FDLA and this most important mission. ~ Terrence J
Great Expectations quotes by Terrence J
I think we need to recover the depth, the subtlety, the generosity of imagination, the respect for wisdom that so marked Islam in its great ages. ~ Prince Charles
