We are all a complete mixture;yet at the same time,we are all related. Each gene can trace its own journey to a different common ancestor. This is a quite extraordinary legacy that we all have inherited from the people who lived before us.Our genes did not just appear when we were born. They have been carried to us by millions of individual lives over thousands of generations. ~ Bryan Sykes
Ancestor quotes by Bryan Sykes
This is a beautiful and hopeful time to be alive. We are at a turning point, and your contribution to the world is needed more than ever. All of your struggles, all the struggles of your ancestors, all the struggles of all life have led to this moment right now. You are the culmination of life's great yearning; you are the hope of the world. ~ Ilchi Lee
Ancestor quotes by Ilchi Lee
What is birth to a man if it shall be a stain to his dead ancestors to have left such an offspring? ~ Philip Sidney
Ancestor quotes by Philip Sidney
Abraham is the shared ancestor of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. He stands at the heart of these three faiths. And yet you know almost nothing about him. ~ Bruce Feiler
Ancestor quotes by Bruce Feiler
My Ancestor Series of adventure-thrillers run like a raging river. I'm now in the editing process with my next thriller, "The Apothecary." Please go to my website for excerpts, synopses, and book trailers of all my works: http://www.gracepublisihing.org. ~ Marshall Chamberlain
Ancestor quotes by Marshall Chamberlain
The truth is that we all are one, that all of us together create god, that god is not man's ancestor, but his descendant. ~ Nikos Kazantzakis
Ancestor quotes by Nikos Kazantzakis
Look, the Latin name for this fish is Carcharodon carcharias, okay? The closest ancestor we can find for it is something called Carcharodon megalodon, a fish that existed maybe thirty or forty thousand years ago. We have fossil teeth from megalodon. They're six inches long. That would put the fish at between eighty and a hundred feet. And the teeth are exactly like the teeth you see in great whites today. What I'm getting at is, suppose the two fish are really one species. What's to say megalodon is really extinct? Why should it be? Not lack of food. If there's enough down there to support whales, there's enough to support sharks that big. Just because we've never seen a hundred-foot white doesn't mean they couldn't exist. They'd have no reason to come to the surface. All their food would be way down in the deep. A dead one wouldn't float to shore, because they don't have flotation bladders. Can you imagine what a hundred-foot white would look like? Can you imagine what it could do, what kind of power it would have?It would be like a locomotive with a mouth full of butcher knives. ~ Peter Benchley
Ancestor quotes by Peter Benchley
The most important question we must ask ourselves is, 'Are we being good ancestors?' ~ Jonas Salk
Ancestor quotes by Jonas Salk
I'm a 10th-generation Texan. My ancestor - Andrew Kent - fought at the Alamo. ~ Jessica Collins
Ancestor quotes by Jessica Collins
Moments go by in your life, becoming memories, and once the people who were apart of them are gone, so is the magic of the memory. A memory once told with laughter or detail, fades into a story long forgotten, like an ancestor remembered only by name. ~ Erin Waters
Ancestor quotes by Erin Waters
Every man serves a useful purpose: a miser, for example, makes a wonderful ancestor. ~ Laurence J. Peter
Ancestor quotes by Laurence J. Peter
While all societies make their own imaginaries (institutions, laws, traditions, beliefs and behaviors), autonomous societies are those that their members are aware of this fact, and explicitly self-institute (αυτο-νομούνται). In contrast, the members of heteronomous societies attribute their imaginaries to some extra-social authority (i.e. God, ancestors, historical necessity) ~ Cornelius Castoriadis
Ancestor quotes by Cornelius Castoriadis
It's clearly possible for a something to acquire higher intelligence than its ancestors: we evolved to be smarter than our ape-like ancestors, and Einstein was smarter than his parents. ~ Stephen Hawking
Ancestor quotes by Stephen Hawking
Wherefore should I not offer my congratulations? But the very fact of them being Sayyids, those fountains of felicity, demands heartly exertions in support of Islam and their ancestor Muhammad the Lord of Apostles. Let two Kaftans of honor for the two brothers be issued from my wardrobe and let them be sent with two swords, jewel-hilted and provided with pearl mounted belts, let Jamdat-ul-Mulk write much praise and congratulations when sending these presents. ~ Aurangzeb
Ancestor quotes by Aurangzeb
It forms a strong presumption against all supernatural and miraculous relations, that they are observed chiefly to abound among ignorant and barbarous nations; or if a civilized people has ever given admission to any of them, that people will be found to have received them from ignorant and barbarous ancestors. ~ David Hume
Ancestor quotes by David Hume
The uniformity of the earth's life, more astonishing than its diversity, is accountable by the high probability that we derived, originally, from some single cell, fertilized in a bolt of lightning as the earth cooled. It is from the progeny of this parent cell that we take our looks; we still share genes around, and the resemblance of the enzymes of grasses to those of whales is a family resemblance. ~ Lewis Thomas
Ancestor quotes by Lewis Thomas
Posterity, thinned by the crime of its ancestors, shall hear of those battles. ~ Horace
Ancestor quotes by Horace
We are the ancestors of the future and what we do now will have an impact. ~ Luisah Teish
Ancestor quotes by Luisah Teish
We are each born into a situation - a particular body (its race, sex, health ... ), a set of ancestors, a community, a nation - and born into the stories told of each of these. ~ Lewis Hyde
Ancestor quotes by Lewis Hyde
In the 1400s it became the figure of the Witch that subsequently blossomed into an international satanic conspiracy. Why did this happen? How did the Sabbat obtain such prominence? Why did the witch become so reviled? Without understanding the enemy there is no answer that can be given. The creation of a purely malefic figure of the Witch was an attack on women, though men too were burned. Woman was attacked in this way to enable the state to enclose the common land. Woman was attacked to remove her control over her womb. Woman was attacked to divide the sexes and rend the social fabric. Woman was attacked to destroy the sense of the sacred in nature. Woman was memory of ancestor and clan. ~ Peter Grey
Ancestor quotes by Peter Grey
Our ancestors are an ever widening circle of hope. ~ Toni Morrison
Ancestor quotes by Toni Morrison
I don't rock chains our ancestors did it for us ~ Phonte
Ancestor quotes by Phonte
If you have an ancestor who is a Benedictine monk, we would rather not know it. ~ Gregory Maguire
Ancestor quotes by Gregory Maguire
Three and a half million years ago our ancestors - yours and mine - left these traces [indicates footprints]. We stood up and parted ways from them. Once we were standing on two feet, our eyes were no longer fixated on the ground. Now, we were free to look up and wonder. ~ Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Ancestor quotes by Neil DeGrasse Tyson
The hero's will is not that of his ancestors nor of his society, but his own. This will to be oneself is heroism. ~ Jose Ortega Y Gasset
Ancestor quotes by Jose Ortega Y Gasset
The idea that one can go to the fossil record and expect to empirically recover an ancestor-descendant sequence, be it of species, genera, families, or whatever, has been, and continues to be, a pernicious illusion. ~ Gareth J. Nelson
Ancestor quotes by Gareth J. Nelson
Mankind is destined to step beyond his earthly bonds just as his ancestors once crawled out of the seas. Colonizing new worlds ... the race will survive. ~ Charles Sheldon
Ancestor quotes by Charles Sheldon
This faith in themselves was in the hearts of our ancestors, this faith in themselves was the motive power that pushed them forward and forward in the march of civilisation, and if there has been degeneration, if there has been defect, mark my words, you will find that degeneration to have started on the day our people lost faith in themselves. ~ Swami Vivekananda
Ancestor quotes by Swami Vivekananda
Humans are upsetting a fragile balance that their own human ancestors established. ~ Joan D. Vinge
Ancestor quotes by Joan D. Vinge
And, you know, the fact is, if you believe in evolution, we all have a common ancestor, and we all have a common ancestry with the plant in the lobby. This is what evolution tells us. And, it's true. It's kind of unbelievable. ~ Jeff Hawkins
Ancestor quotes by Jeff Hawkins
Practical in our expectations of the Criminal Law. ... [For] we have merely to imagine, by some trick of time travel, meeting our earliest hominid ancestor, Adam, a proto-man, short of stature, luxuriantly furred, newly bipedal, foraging about on the African ~ William Landay
Ancestor quotes by William Landay
Then came a volley of colorful abuse, delivered in such an imperious voice, at at such a volume, that Terentia's distant ancestor, who had commanded the Roman line against Hannibal at Cannae a century and a half before, must surely have sat bolt upright in his tomb. ~ Robert Harris
Ancestor quotes by Robert Harris
I am proud of all my ancestresses. They showed us that it's possible to do great things and still live a happy, pleasure filled life. So can I; so can you. ~ Maria Rodale
Ancestor quotes by Maria Rodale
Not a single one of your ancestors died young. They all copulated at least once. ~ Richard Dawkins
Ancestor quotes by Richard Dawkins
when'd the west set in your bones? you survive
each winter like you were made for snow, a stranger

to each ancestor who lights your path. your parents,
dead, never taught you their language -- stranger

to everything that tries to bring you home. ~ Fatimah Asghar
Ancestor quotes by Fatimah Asghar
Researches still don't have an explanation for the differnece between the sizes of dogs' and wolves' brains - or for why every species of domesticated animal, from ducks and geese to horses and pigs, also has a smaller brain than its wild ancestor. The reason or reasons domestication always leads to smaller brains are hotly debated; but the effects are universal. Anthropologists have documented the same change in Homo sapiens: the brains of modern humans have shrunk about 10 percent over the last ten thousand years. ~ Virginia Morell
Ancestor quotes by Virginia Morell
An itinerant selfish gene/ Said 'bodies a- plenty I've seen./ You think you're so clever/ But I'll live for ever./ You're just a survival machine. ~ Richard Dawkins
Ancestor quotes by Richard Dawkins
The core of ethics runs deep in our species and is common to human beings everywhere. It survives the most appalling hardships and the most ruthless attempts to deprive human beings of their humanity. Nevertheless, some people resist the idea that his core has a biological basis which we have inherited from our pre-human ancestors. ~ Peter Singer
Ancestor quotes by Peter Singer
I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. ~ Ben Stein
Ancestor quotes by Ben Stein
Molecular evidense suggests that our common ancestor with the chimpanzees lived, in Africa, between 5 and 7 million years ago, say half a million generations ago. This is not long by evolutionary standards. ~ Richard Dawkins
Ancestor quotes by Richard Dawkins
If we presume that the boundary of the universe is a kind of surrounding wall,
then we think like ancestors who thought there's abyss at the edge of flat earth. ~ Toba Beta
Ancestor quotes by Toba Beta
Ancestor worship, or filial piety so characteristic of Asian cultures, for example, does not really resonate with Americans who favor children, not grandparents. ~ Alan Dundes
Ancestor quotes by Alan Dundes
Our ancestors derived less from life than we do, but they also expected much less and were less intent on controlling the future. We are of the arrogant generations who believe a lasting happiness was promised to us at birth. Promised? By whom? ~ Amin Maalouf
Ancestor quotes by Amin Maalouf
We split from our common ancestor with the octopus half a billion years ago. And yet, you can make friends with an octopus. ~ Sy Montgomery
Ancestor quotes by Sy Montgomery
I'd always wanted to believe that my ancestors were better people than they probably were. - Princess Emma ~ E.D. Baker
Ancestor quotes by E.D. Baker
I would like to be like my father and all the rest of my ancestors who never married. ~ Moliere
Ancestor quotes by Moliere
We share a common ancestor with chimps that is not shared by mandrills, we share a common ancestor with mandrills that is not shared by bushbabies, and on and on and on, to the ancestor we share with nematode worms that is not shared with oak trees. ~ Simon Barnes
Ancestor quotes by Simon Barnes
Our ape-like and arboreal ancestors entered upon the first of many short cuts. To crack a marrow-bone with a rock was the act which fathered the tool, and between the cracking of a marrow-bone and the riding down town in an automobile lies only a difference of degree. ~ Jack London
Ancestor quotes by Jack London
If we are to make progress, we must not repeat history but make new history. We must add to the inheritance left by our ancestors. If we may make new discoveries and inventions in the phenomenal world, must we declare our bankruptcy in the spiritual domain? Is ~ Paramahansa Yogananda
Ancestor quotes by Paramahansa Yogananda
I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. ~ Barack Obama
Ancestor quotes by Barack Obama
They fear that without compulsion the masses will not work. But during our own lifetime, have we not heard the same fears expressed twice? Once, by the anti-abolitionists in America before the emancipation of the Negroes, and, for a second time, by the Russian nobility before the liberation of the serfs? 'Without the whip the Negro will not work,' said the anti- abolitionist. 'Free from their master's supervision the serfs will leave the fields uncultivated,' said the Russian serf-owners. It was the refrain of the French noblemen in 1789, the refrain of the Middle Ages, a refrain as old as the world, and we shall hear it every time there is a question of sweeping away an injustice. And each time actual facts give it the lie. The liberated peasant of 1792 ploughed with an eager energy, unknown to his ancestor so, the emancipated Negro works more than his fathers; and the Russian peasant, after having honoured the honeymoon of his emancipation by celebrating Fridays as well as Sundays, has taken up work with an eagerness proportionate to the completeness of his liberation. There, where the soil is his, he works desperately; that is the exact word for it. The anti-abolitionist refrain can be of value to slave-owners; as to the slaves them- selves, they know what it is worth, as they know its motive. ~ Pyotr Kropotkin
Ancestor quotes by Pyotr Kropotkin
One of the best things about Heaven is that we will be able to reunite with loved ones who have already passed on. It will be the greatest family reunion we've ever known, with our loved ones, relatives and ancestors all together in one place at the same time, rejoicing. All together at last! ~ David Berg
Ancestor quotes by David Berg
Old Marley was as dead as a doornail.
Mind! I don't mean to say that, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a doornail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country's done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a doornail. ~ Charles Dickens
Ancestor quotes by Charles Dickens
I will honor my ancestors in StarClan," Bramblestar vowed, "but not those who have ever walked in the Dark Forest. Guide my steps wisely, warriors of the past." He lowered his head. "And warriors of now". ~ Erin Hunter
Ancestor quotes by Erin Hunter
Any living cell carries with it the experience of a billion years of experimentation by its ancestors. ~ Max Delbruck
Ancestor quotes by Max Delbruck
As my ancestors are free from slavery, I am free from the slavery of religion. ~ Butterfly McQueen
Ancestor quotes by Butterfly McQueen
This example, it seems to us, suffices to show in what way the nonreligious man of modern societies is still nourished and aided by the activity of his unconscious, yet without thereby attaining to a properly religious experience and vision of the world. The unconscious offers him solutions for the difficulties of his own life, and in this way plays the role of religion, for, before making an existence a creator of values, religion ensures its integrity, From one point of view it could almost be said that in the case of those moderns who proclaim that they are nonreligious, religion and mythology are "eclipsed" in the darkness of their unconscious - which means too that in such men the possibility of reintegrating a religious vision of life lies at a great depth. Or, from the Christian point of view, it could also be said that nonreligion is equivalent to a new "fall" of man - in other words, that nonreligious man has lost the capacity to live religion consciously, and hence to understand and assume it; but that, in his deepest being, he still retains a memory of it, as, after the first "fall," his ancestor, the primordial man, retained intelligence enough to enable him to rediscover the traces of God that are visible in the world. After the first "fall," the religious sense descended to the level of the ' 'divided" consciousness"; now, after the second, it has fallen even further, into the depths of the unconscious; it has been "forgotten," Here the considerations of the hi ~ Mircea Eliade
Ancestor quotes by Mircea Eliade
There is nothing glorious about what our ancestors call history. It is simply a succession of mistakes, intolerances and violations. ~ Claude Vorilhon
Ancestor quotes by Claude Vorilhon
We regard the earldom as an important family honor. But my father is a good man precisely because he is a good man, not because he possesses an ancient title. And as for Lord Blackwood, I find his title all the more appealing because it represents the nobility of the man standing before you, not of some long-dead ancestor. ~ Julia Quinn
Ancestor quotes by Julia Quinn
Building the future holds more attraction than ancestor worship, whichever ancestor we're talking about. ~ Douglas Alexander
Ancestor quotes by Douglas Alexander
I am not carrying on a war of extermination against the Romans. I am contending for honor and empire. My ancestors yielded to Roman valour. I am endeavouring that others, in their turn, will be obliged to yield to my good fortune, and my valour. ~ Hannibal
Ancestor quotes by Hannibal
Quite recently the human descent theory has been stigmatized as the 'gorilla theory of human ancestry.' All this despite the fact that Darwin himself, in the days when not a single bit of evidence regarding the fossil ancestors of man was recognized, distinctly stated that none of the known anthropoid apes, much less any of the known monkeys, should be considered in any way as ancestral to the human stock. ~ Henry Fairfield Osborn
Ancestor quotes by Henry Fairfield Osborn
Even when the lights go out, even when someone says to me: "It's over---," even when from the stage a gray gust of emptiness drifts toward me,
even when not one silent ancestor sits beside me anymore---not a woman, not even the boy with the brown squint-eye:
I'll sit here anyway. One can always watch. ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
Ancestor quotes by Rainer Maria Rilke
Every man is an omnibus in which his ancestors ride. ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
Ancestor quotes by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
There are very few really brilliant men who have not had at least one madman among their ancestors. ~ Andre Maurois
Ancestor quotes by Andre Maurois
Then, of course, through the umbilical link we all tumble backwards down the spiralling DNA staircase to one common ancestor in Africa, and before that some bunch of curious monkeys. Down and down we go unto the sea, unto the dust, the single cellular dust. What impulse drove one cell to become two? What yearning pulled the fish on to the land? What caused apes to walk upright? Some invisible magnetic pull. Is there a difference between attraction and intention? Where is evolution taking us? ~ Russell Brand
Ancestor quotes by Russell Brand
We are all motivated far more than we care to admit by characteristics inherited from our ancestors which individual experiences of childhood can modify, repress, or enhance, but cannot erase. ~ Agnes Meyer Driscoll
Ancestor quotes by Agnes Meyer Driscoll
I make a prayer now to your old ones,
to those whose face you never saw
and voice you never heard
and name you haven't known,
that they remember you
while you try to find them remembering you,
that they come at the proper time to gather you in,
that they whisper to you the truth that you haven't been alone,
and won't be,
that they know the hard friendship of the ending of days;
I make a prayer that all who were there at your making
will be there for your gathering in,
that their hands will be there just by your opening head,
your little fountain,
to make a home for your sorrowing heart and for you;
I make a prayer that your house and your people
will be blessed by your coming and your going,
that the day will come
when they will boast of for a while having known you,
and will marvel at the way of your going out from among them,
and that you might be reason enough for them to continue for a while,
and that in the days to come
you will be claimed as noble,
as an ancestor worth coming from. ~ Stephen Jenkinson
Ancestor quotes by Stephen Jenkinson
Like Adam, our first conspicuous ancestor, I must begin, and lay the blame upon a woman; I am glad to recognize that I differ from the father of my sex in no important particular, being as manlike as most of his sons. ~ Owen Wister
Ancestor quotes by Owen Wister
In Islam, and especially among the Sufi Orders, siyahat or 'errance' - the action or rhythm of walking - was used as a technique for dissolving the attachments of the world and allowing men to lose themselves in God. The aim of a dervish was to become a 'dead man walking': one whose body stays alive on the earth yet whose soul is already in Heaven. A Sufi manual, the Kashf-al-Mahjub, says that, toward the end of his tourney, the dervish becomes the Way not the wayfarer, i.e. a place over which something is passing, not a traveller following his own free will...it was quite similar to an Aboriginal concept, 'Many men afterwards become country, in that place, Ancestors.' By spending his whole life walking and singing his Ancestor's Songline, a man eventually became the track, the Ancestor and the song. The Wayless Way, where the Sons of God lose themselves and, at the same time, find themselves. ~ Meister Eckhart
Ancestor quotes by Meister Eckhart
I haven't checked, but I highly suspect that chickens evolved from an egg-laying ancestor, which would mean that there were, in fact, eggs before there were chickens. Genius. ~ Ta-Nehisi Coates
Ancestor quotes by Ta-Nehisi Coates
A friend of ours has a hobby doing genealogy, and we found out that we were cousins in the ninth degree, that we had a common ancestor on the Mayflower. ~ Marion Zimmer Bradley
Ancestor quotes by Marion Zimmer Bradley
There was an idea that God created man different from other animals, because man was rational and animals had drives and instincts. That idea of a rational man that was specially created went out the window when Darwin showed that we evolved from animal ancestors, that we have instincts, much as do animals, and that our instincts are very important. It was a much more sophisticated, nuanced, and rich view of the human mind. ~ Eric Kandel
Ancestor quotes by Eric Kandel
Some of the very heroic and colourful figures in our history are sons of Sabaragamuwa - Parakramabahu I, born in Dedigama, the warrior King Rajasinghe I also known as Sitawaka Rajasingha, Edirille Rala born in Colombo and baptised Domingo Corea, who returned to the village of his ancestors Atulugama near Sitawaka and turned against the Portuguese. ~ Dominicus Corea
Ancestor quotes by Dominicus Corea
We need to consider ancestral cleansing. If we're willing to clear our energy fields of the ancestral energies we don't want, then we are ready to do something really interesting and beautiful which is to claim a connection with the wisdom of the kinds of ancestors we do want to be in contact with. But we can't do this until we've cleaned out the lower stuff that is hindering us. ~ Robert Moss
Ancestor quotes by Robert Moss
In many parts of the world, ghosts are not considered to be a creation of local folklore, but a fact of life. In China the dead are understood to co-exist with the living, a belief which gave rise to the practice of ancestor worship, while in South America the deceased are honoured with annual festivals known as the Day of the Dead which suggests that the material world and the spirit world might not be as distinct as we might like to believe. In the Eastern and Asiatic religions it is believed that death is not the end, but simply a transition from one state of being to another. The Hindu Upanishads, for example, liken each human soul to a lump of salt taken from the ocean which must ultimately return to the source. ~ Paul Roland
Ancestor quotes by Paul Roland
We stand on no high moral plateau in our time. We are, in fact, plumbing depths of depravity unknown to our ancestors
and whatever may have been the evil in which they engaged, at least they were willing to acknowledge the principle by which their evil was condemned. We have even turned our back on the principle. ~ Alan Keyes
Ancestor quotes by Alan Keyes
Conscience is strong in women. Children are very violently taught that they owe all to their parents, and the parents are not slow in foreclosing the mortgage. But the home is not a debtor's prison - to girls any more than to boys. This enormous claim of parents calls for extermination. Do they in truth do all for their children; do their children owe all to them? Is nothing furnished in the way of safety, sanitation, education, by that larger home, the state? What could these parents do, alone, in never so pleasant a home, without the allied forces of society to maintain that home in peace and prosperity. These lingering vestiges of a patriarchal cult must be left behind. Ancestor-worship has had victims enough. Girls are human creatures as well as boys, and both have duties, imperative duties, quite outside the home. ~ Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Ancestor quotes by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
He only deserves to be remembered by posterity who treasures up and preserves the history of his ancestors. ~ Edmund Burke
Ancestor quotes by Edmund Burke
A people who still remembered that their ancestors had been the masters of the world would have applauded, with conscious pride, the representation of ancient freedom, if they had not long since been accustomed to prefer the solid assurance of bread to the unsubstantial visions of liberty and greatness. ~ Edward Gibbon
Ancestor quotes by Edward Gibbon
He did not know that the Old One was his father, for such a relationship was utterly beyond his understanding, but as he looked at the emaciated body he felt a dim disquiet that was the ancestor of sadness. ~ Arthur C. Clarke
Ancestor quotes by Arthur C. Clarke
By comparing the human and chimp genomes, we can see the process of evolution clearly in the changes (in DNA) since we diverged from our common ancestor. ~ Bob Waterston
Ancestor quotes by Bob Waterston
There is an ancient Indian saying: "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children." If we use this ethic as a moral compass, then our rendezvous with reality can also become a rendezvous with opportunity. ~ Patricia Schroeder
Ancestor quotes by Patricia Schroeder
Artificial selection turned the wolf into the shepherd, and the wild grasses into wheat and corn. In fact, almost every plant and animal that we eat today was bred from a wild, less edible ancestor. If artificial selection can work such profound changes in only ten or fifteen thousand years, what can natural selection do operating over billions of years? The answer is all the beauty and diversity of life. ~ Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Ancestor quotes by Neil DeGrasse Tyson
the first responsibility of a human
being is to be a better ancestor. ~ John Perry Barlow
Ancestor quotes by John Perry Barlow
Man is physically as well as metaphysically a thing of shreds and patches, borrowed unequally from good and bad ancestors, and a misfit from the start. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ancestor quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
The only way we are going to reduce disease, is to go backward to the diets and lifestyles of our ancestors. ~ Denis Parsons Burkitt
Ancestor quotes by Denis Parsons Burkitt
Freedom is a state of mind, mignonne,' he said against her hair. 'My ancestor found it in this room, studying the constellations, even though physically he was a prisoner of his own infirmity. Other men are prisoners of their own emotions, their hearts given in bondage to a woman as cold and remote as the distant stars. ~ Penny Jordan
Ancestor quotes by Penny Jordan
That is one of the reasons I oppose this whole Affirmative Action business. We are not supposed to be judged based on what our ancestors did or suffered. We are supposed to be judged as individuals, based on what we are able to achieve. ~ Alan Keyes
Ancestor quotes by Alan Keyes
Honor among thieves is the ancestor of all honor. ~ John McCarthy
Ancestor quotes by John McCarthy
The voices of our ancestors telling of our glorious past, our culture, and what it means to be an Indian. ~ Allen Sapp
Ancestor quotes by Allen Sapp
A man is the sum of his ancestors; to reform him you must begin with a dead ape and work downward through a million graves. ~ Ambrose Bierce
Ancestor quotes by Ambrose Bierce
You do not need to belong to the cat for a long time to realize the main thing that cats like to do is to wrap theirselves up in mystery, perhaps only except for a hobby of jumbling up everything that is in order. And if the cat can, and usually so, make a great mystery of where it was when you were searching for it even if a moment ago it was sitting by your side, do not have any doubts: its ancestors had a great pleasure to surround its origin by mystery. ~ Cleveland Amory
Ancestor quotes by Cleveland Amory
Our ancestors are totally essential to our every waking moment, although most of us don't even have the faintest idea about their lives, their trials, their hardships or challenges. ~ Annie Lennox
Ancestor quotes by Annie Lennox
Children of those ancient Aryans, through the grace of the Lord may you have the same pride, may that faith in your ancestors come into your blood, may it become a part and parcel of your lives, may it work towards the salvation of the world! ~ Swami Vivekananda
Ancestor quotes by Swami Vivekananda
Manism (ancestor cults) - but it was not as concerned ~ Reza Aslan
Ancestor quotes by Reza Aslan
Ain't you been listening? I'm YUSUKE URAMESHI... the same ornery dawg you've always known and loved. So I have a DEMON ANCESTOR! Big Deal! I'm still going To KICK Sensui's sorry butt! -Yusuke ~ Yoshihiro Togashi
Ancestor quotes by Yoshihiro Togashi
I found myself drawn to biology, with all its frustrating yet fascinating complexities. When I was twelve, I remember reading about axolotls, which are basically a species of salamander that has evolved to remain permanently in the aquatic larval stage. They manage to keep their gills (rather than trading them in for lungs, like salamanders or frogs) by shutting down metamorphosis and becoming sexually mature in the water. I was completely flabbergasted when I read that by simply giving these creatures the "metamorphosis hormone" (thyroid extract) you could make the axolotl revert back into the extinct, land-dwelling, gill-less adult ancestor that it had evolved from. You could go back in time, resurrecting a prehistoric animal that no longer exists anywhere on Earth. I also knew that for some mysterious reason adult salamanders don't regenerate amputated legs but the tadpoles do. My curiosity took me one step further, to the question of whether an axolotl - which is, after all, an "adult tadpole" - would retain its ability to regenerate a lost leg just as a modern frog tadpole does. And how many other axolotl-like beings exist on Earth, I wondered, that could be restored to their ancestral forms by simply giving them hormones? Could humans - who are after all apes that have evolved to retain many juvenile qualities - be made to revert to an ancestral form, perhaps something resembling Homo erectus, using the appropriate cocktail of hormones? My mind reeled out a stream of qu ~ V.S. Ramachandran
Ancestor quotes by V.S. Ramachandran
For over two billion years, through the apparent fancy of her endless differentiations and metamorphosis the Cell, as regards its basic physiological mechanisms, has remained one and the same. It is life itself, and our true and distant ancestor. ~ Albert Claude
Ancestor quotes by Albert Claude
Even before the concentration camps, I felt it was my duty to my ancestors to preserve a world which might cease to exist. ~ Roman Vishniac
Ancestor quotes by Roman Vishniac
