Contentment is a rose, and the daily increase of our wants, are the thorns. ~ Matshona Dhliwayo
Thorns quotes by Matshona Dhliwayo
Joy come and go like pleasant breeze. It's the miseries that stick in you like thorns - until you realize that it's all your doing. ~ Sadghuru
Thorns quotes by Sadghuru
The trouble is, when you gift a girl with flowers your choice can be construed so many different ways. A man might give you a rose because he feels you are beautiful, or because he fancies their shade or shape or softness similar to your lips. Roses are expensive, and perhaps he wishes to show through a valuable gift that you are valuable to him.
When a man gives you a rose what you see may not be what he intends. You may think he sees you as delicate or frail. Perhaps you dislike a suitor who considers you sweet and nothing else. Perhaps the stem is thorn, and you assume he thinks you likely to hurt a hand too quick to touch. But if he trims the thorns you might think he has no liking for a thing that can defend itself with sharpness. There's so many ways a thing can be interpreted. ~ Patrick Rothfuss
Thorns quotes by Patrick Rothfuss
I am reminded of the proverb about the man with a single teacup to fetch water for his plants. In order to keep some alive, he had to let others die or run himself ragged. I have chosen to water this particular plant despite all its thorns, and I must simply hope my relationship with Tom can survive my absence. ~ Stacey Lee
Thorns quotes by Stacey Lee
The end for which we are created invites us to walk a road that is surely sown with a lot of thorns, but it is not sad; through even the sorrow, it is illuminated by joy. ~ Pier Giorgio Frassati
Thorns quotes by Pier Giorgio Frassati
Nature is evil. Nature is conflict, violence, betrayal; worms that crawl through the skin and breen in the gut; thorns that poison; snakes that fight in writhing, heaving masses until all lie dead from another's poison. From nature we learned to tear the flesh off the bone and suck out the blook - and to enjoy it. Do you want to return to that state? I do not. ~ Donna Boyd
Thorns quotes by Donna Boyd
If trust must be earned, hasn't God unequivocally earned our trust with the bark on the raw wounds, the thorns pressed into the brow, your name on the cracked lips. ~ Ann Voskamp
Thorns quotes by Ann Voskamp
Look at this tangle of thorns. ~ Vladimir Nabokov
Thorns quotes by Vladimir Nabokov
Don't suggest that we are growing old, my Lord. We have only bloomed; and a very nice bouquet we make with our buds about us,' answered Mrs. Amy, shaking out the folds of her rosy muslin with much the air of dainty satisfaction the girl used to show in a new dress.
Not to mention our thorns and dead leaves,' added Jo, with a sigh; for life had never been very easy to her, and even now she had her troubles both within and without. ~ Louisa May Alcott
Thorns quotes by Louisa May Alcott
Even though one is well advanced in virtue, should he stop mortifying himself, he soon would lose his modesty and virtue - just as fertile soul quickly becomes dry and arid and produces nothing but thorns and thistles if it is not cultivated. ~ John Climacus
Thorns quotes by John Climacus
As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters. ~ Solomon Ibn Gabirol
Thorns quotes by Solomon Ibn Gabirol
Learn from your past and shut the door behind to live in present. Our past is just like a dry rose which was once a rose with all colors of life, with sweet fragrance, with soft petal, with thorns but now it is left with only thorns which could still hurt. ~ Ideaswar
Thorns quotes by Ideaswar
After the winter of thorns came spring. The roses would bloom again. But if she lost Mr. Morland, she'd be chopping down the whole bush. Killing the thorns, to be sure, but killing the beautiful roses too. Just because she couldn't always see the flowers didn't mean they were not still there. ~ Julie Daines
Thorns quotes by Julie Daines
Our path dictates how strong we will be and how tall we will grow. Will our life grow into something beautiful, or will we develop thorns for protection. ~ Chanda Hahn
Thorns quotes by Chanda Hahn
This is what the Problem means," he went on. "This is the effect it has. Lives lost, loved ones taken before their time. And then we hide our dead behind iron walls and leave them to the thorns and ivy. We lose them twice over, Lucy. Death's not the worst of it. We turn our faces away. ~ Jonathan Stroud
Thorns quotes by Jonathan Stroud
Even though we know we'll get hurt by thorns, we still go for flowers. ~ Rupal Asodaria (RupalAsodaria.com)
Thorns quotes by Rupal Asodaria (RupalAsodaria.com)
I looked at you and only saw beautiful because legendary is the ability of a woman's mind to weave fields of roses from thorns. ~ J. Autherine
Thorns quotes by J. Autherine
On the hearth, in front of a back-brand to give substance, blazed a fire of thorns, that crackled 'like the laughter of the fool.'

Nineteen persons were gathered here. Of these, five women, wearing gowns of various bright hues, sat in chairs along the wall; girls shy and not shy filled the window-bench; four men, including Charley Jake the hedge-carpenter, Elijah New the parish-clerk, and John Pitcher, a neighboring dairyman, the shepherd's father-in-law, lolled in the settle; a young man and maid, who were blushing over tentative pourparlers on a life companionship, sat beneath the corner-cupboard; and an elderly engaged man of fifty or upward moved restlessly about from spots where his betrothed was not to the spot where she was. Enjoyment was pretty general, and so much the more prevailed in being unhampered by conventional restrictions. Absolute confidence in each other's good opinion begat perfect ease, while the finishing stroke of manner, amounting to a truly princely serenity, was lent to the majority by the absence of any expression or trait denoting that they wished to get on in the world, enlarge their minds, or do any eclipsing thing whatever - which nowadays so generally nips the bloom and bonhomie of all except the two extremes of the social scale.

("The Three Strangers") ~ Thomas Hardy
Thorns quotes by Thomas Hardy
I repeated: come with me, as if I were dying,
and no one saw in my mouth the moon that was bleeding,
no one saw the blood that was rising into the silence.
Oh love, now let us forget the star with thorns! ~ Pablo Neruda
Thorns quotes by Pablo Neruda
The concrete highway was edged with a mat of tangled, broken, dry grass, and the grass heads were heavy with oat beards to catch on a dog's coat, and foxtails to tangle in a horse's fetlocks, and clover burrs to fasten in sheep's wool; sleeping life waiting to be spread and dispersed, every seed armed with an appliance of dispersal, twisting darts and parachutes for the wind, little spears and balls of tiny thorns, and all waiting for animals and for the wind, for a man's trouser cuff or the hem of a woman's skirt, all passive but armed with appliances of activity, still, but each possessed of the anlage of movement. ~ John Steinbeck
Thorns quotes by John Steinbeck
You can be a beautiful rose, but all some people will see are your thorns. ~ Matshona Dhliwayo
Thorns quotes by Matshona Dhliwayo
We return to face our superiors, our kindred, our friends--- those whom we obey, and those whom we love; but even they who have neither, the most free, lonely, irresponsible and bereft of ties, --- even those for whom home holds no dear face, no familiar voice, --- even they have to meet the spirit that dwells within the land, under its sky, in its air, in its valleys, and on its rises, in its fields, in its waters and its tress--- a mute friend, judge, and inspirer.
Say what you like, to get its joy, to breathe its peace, to face its truth, one must return with a clear conscience.
All this may seem to you sheer sentimentalism; and indeed very few of us have the will or capacity to look consciously under the surface of familiar emotions.
There are the girls we love, the men we look up to, the tenderness, the friendships, the opportunities, the pleasures! But the fact remains that you must touch your reward with clean hands, lest it turn to dead leaves, to thorns, in your grasp. ~ Joseph Conrad
Thorns quotes by Joseph Conrad
This earth is not our home. We are away at school, trying to master the lessons of "the great plan of happiness" so we can return home and know what it means to be there. Over and over the Lord tells us why the plan is worth our sacrifice - and His. Eve called it "the joy of our redemption." Jacob called it "that happiness which is prepared for the saints." Of necessity, the plan is full of thorns and tears - His and ours. But because He and we are so totally in this together, our being "at one" with Him in overcoming all opposition will itself bring us "incomprehensible joy." ~ Bruce C. Hafen
Thorns quotes by Bruce C. Hafen
You drove me mad, ~ Sarah J. Maas
Thorns quotes by Sarah J. Maas
Thorns with rose petals, beauty with imperfection, softness of insensibility, pain of love; duality of human nature ~ Val Uchendu
Thorns quotes by Val Uchendu
Knowledge is a Bed of Roses; for Every Beautiful Flower, there are a Dozen Thorns to Match ~ Joshua Caleb
Thorns quotes by Joshua Caleb
If you don't sow your field what harvest other than thorns and weeds can you anticipate? ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Thorns quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
The head that once was crowned with thorns Is crowned with glory now. ~ Tom Kelley
Thorns quotes by Tom Kelley
When they killed him, Mother wouldn't hold her peace, so they slit her throat. I was stupid then, being only nine, and I fought to save them both. But the thorns held me tight. I've learned to appreciate thorns since. The thorns taught me the game. They let me understand what all those grim and serious men who've fought the Hundred War have yet to learn. You can only win the game when you understand that it IS a game. Let a man play chess, and tell him that every pawn is his friend. Let him think both bishops holy. Let him remember happy days in the shadows of his castles. Let him love his queen. Watch him loose them all. ~ Mark Lawrence
Thorns quotes by Mark Lawrence
You do not continue to sit on thorns that continue to prickle you. If the prickling continues, ponder and continue ~ Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Thorns quotes by Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
In Christ we see the strength of achievement, and the strength of endurance. He moved with a calm majesty, like the sun. The bloody sweat, and the crown of thorns, and the cross, were full in His eyes; but He was obedient unto death. In His perfect self-sacrifice we see the perfection of strength; in the love that prompted it we see the perfection of beauty. This combination of self-sacrifice and love must be commenced in every Christian; and when it shall be in its spirit complete in him, then will he also be perfect in strength and beauty. ~ Mark Hopkins
Thorns quotes by Mark Hopkins
A dense wall of greenery bordered it, ... an impenetrable barrier of oaks, evergreen shrubs, blackberry that somehow resisted the frost, and thorns. In the defense department, the witches would make Sleeping Beauty's evil witch weep with jealousy. ~ Ilona Andrews
Thorns quotes by Ilona Andrews
His work is as it were, a sacred object and the true fruit of his life, and his aim in storing it away for a more discerning posterity will be to make it the property of mankind. An aim like this far surpasses all others, and for it he wears the crown of thorns which is one day to bloom into a wreath of laurel. All his powers are concentrated in the effort to complete and secure his work; just as the insect, in the last stage of its development, uses its whole strength on behalf of a brood it will never live to see; it puts its eggs in some place of safety, where, as it well knows, the young will one day find life and nourishment, and then dies in confidence. ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
Thorns quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
I love you.Thorns and All. ~ Sarah J. Maas
Thorns quotes by Sarah J. Maas
I have rose-colored glasses. The frames have thorns. ~ Jarod Kintz
Thorns quotes by Jarod Kintz
Thorns may hurt you, men desert you, sunlight turn to fog;
but you're never friendless ever, if you have a dog. ~ Douglas Malloch
Thorns quotes by Douglas Malloch
That swimming, sloping, elusive something about the dark-bluish tint of the iris which seemed still to retain the shadows it had absorbed of ancient, fabulous forests where there were more birds than tigers and more fruit than thorns, and where, in some dappled depth, man's mind had been born ... ~ Vladimir Nabokov
Thorns quotes by Vladimir Nabokov
When serpents bargain for the right to squirm
and the sun strikes to gain a living wage -
when thorns regard their roses with alarm
and rainbows are insured against old age
when every thrush may sing no new moon in
if all screech-owls have not okayed his voice
- and any wave signs on the dotted line
or else an ocean is compelled to close
when the oak begs permission of the birch
to make an acorn - valleys accuse their
mountains of having altitude - and march
denounces april as a saboteur
then we'll believe in that incredible
unanimal mankind (and not until) ~ E. E. Cummings
Thorns quotes by E. E. Cummings
My enemies defeated, and yet the sorrow remained, keener, more true, more clean, for I had always owned it. It echoed back to the thorns, the tone of a bell resounding through the years. We're fashioned by our sorrows - not by joy - they are the undercurrent, the refrain. Joy is fleeting. ~ Mark Lawrence
Thorns quotes by Mark Lawrence
Fasting, prayama (breath control), japa (repetition of a name of God or a short mantra), and study of scriptures are among the most common practices. At the mels one can observe other varieties of tapas: lying on a bed of thorns or nails, prolonged standing on one leg, lifting one arm for years till it is withered, looking straight into the glaring sun for long hours, and similar sportive feats. Many ascetics keep silent for years. This is one of the most powerful means of storing up spiritual energy. ~ Klaus K. Klostermaier
Thorns quotes by Klaus K. Klostermaier
I am made Hand of the King which gives me an enormous amount of power, which I use quite ruthlessly - but skilfully - and Dame Diana Rigg joins us [playing political mastermind the Queen of Thorns] and we have a couple of really good sparring moments. ~ Charles Dance
Thorns quotes by Charles Dance
See life like a rose; don't see it for the prickly thorns, see it for the color of the petals ~ Aileen Z.
Thorns quotes by Aileen Z.
Silas paused even longer. Finally he said, in a voice almost like his own, "I fear he must learn to put his clothes on the right side out. He will have twenty more years now to master the art. Let us hope that time is sufficient." He took a step forward. 'Take care of him, Elisabeth. ~ Margaret Rogerson, Sorcery Of Thorns
Thorns quotes by Margaret Rogerson, Sorcery Of Thorns
Everything drifts. Everything is slowly swirling, philosophies tangled with the grocery lists, unreal-real anxieties like rose thorns waiting to tear the uncertain flesh, nonentities of thoughts floating like plankton, green and orange particles, seaweed
lots of that, dark purple and waving, sharks with fins like cutlasses, herself held underwater by her hair, snared around auburn-rusted anchor chains. ~ Margaret Laurence
Thorns quotes by Margaret Laurence
Remember that every guilty compliance with the humors of the world , every sinful indulgence of our own passions , is laying up cares and fears for the hour of darkness , and that the remembrance of ill-spent time will strew our sick bed with thorns and rack our sinking spirits with despair . ~ Reginald Heber
Thorns quotes by Reginald Heber
Nature seems to delight in disappointing the assuduities of art, with which it would rear dulness to maturity, and to glory in the vigor and luxuriance of her chance productions. She scatters the seeds of genius to the winds, and though some may perish among the stony places of the world, and some may be choked by the thorns and brambles of early adversity, yet others will now and then strike root even in the clefts of the rock, struggle bravely up into sunshine, and spread over their sterile birthplace all the beauties of vegetation. ~ Washington Irving
Thorns quotes by Washington Irving
Life is full of paradoxes, as roses are of thorns. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Thorns quotes by Fernando Pessoa
Live in Thorns but always enchant the hearts with your fragrance ~ Alok Jagawat
Thorns quotes by Alok Jagawat
Count the roses, not the thorns. ~ Matshona Dhliwayo
Thorns quotes by Matshona Dhliwayo
You want worship for what? For what you give? For how you treat us? For what you allow to happen? For the hatred that exists that you don't stop? For the violence that you don't stop? For the death that you don't stop? Man killing man killing women killing children that you don't stop. And you want worship? You want us on our knees? You want devotion? You want exaltation? You want faith? A crown of thorns pressed into the skull bleeding at the tips. ~ James Frey
Thorns quotes by James Frey
And the old ones were burly people, as strong as bears or wolverines. One of Thorn's stories told how an old one had married a bear by mistake, and neither of them had noticed; their daughter told them about it years later, not at all pleased with them. ~ Kim Stanley Robinson
Thorns quotes by Kim Stanley Robinson
Grief is not something you know if you grow up wearing feathers with a Charlie Chaplin boyfriend, a love-child papoose, a witch baby, a Dirk and a Duck, a Slinkster Dog, and a movie to dance in. You can feel sad and worse when your dad moves to another city, when an old lady dies, or when your boyfriend goes away. But grief is different. Weetzie's heart cringed in her like a dying animal. It was as if someone had stuck a needle full of poison into her heart. She moved like a sleepwalker. She was the girl in the fairy tale sleeping in a prison of thorns and roses. ~ Francesca Lia Block
Thorns quotes by Francesca Lia Block
Nature shaped the claw to trap, and the tooth to kill, but the thorn ... the thorn's only purpose is to hurt. ~ Mark Lawrence
Thorns quotes by Mark Lawrence
There are thorns everywhere, but along the path of vice, roses bloom above them. ~ Marquis De Sade
Thorns quotes by Marquis De Sade
Disheartened, enraptured, and strangely lightheaded, Grady emerged from the trees and walked back through town to the island bridge, his ankles and hands marked up with thorn scratches. ~ Molly Ringle
Thorns quotes by Molly Ringle
Truth is to be found in dreams," the King said, looking down at them. From this angle, Emma could see that the odd splitting of his face ended at his throat, which was ordinary skin. "Tell me, Shadowhunters: You enter a cave. Inside the cave is an egg, lit from within and glowing. You know that it beats with your dreams--not the ones you have during the day, but the ones you half-remember in the morning. It splits open. What emerges?"
"A rose," said Mark. "With thorns."
Christina cut her eyes toward him in surprise, but remained motionless. "An angel," she said. "With bloody hands."
"A knife," said Emma. "Pure and clean."
"Bars," Julian said quietly. "The bars of a prison cell. ~ Cassandra Clare
Thorns quotes by Cassandra Clare
JESUS

Woke up in a white veil
The fog sets the silence in my hands
I think back to my thoughts
About the people
I'm thinking
With increasing pain in my head
People who have condemned me
Dark hour

the hours
And I would now complain quietly
But there is no fury
And there is no sadness
The time has melted away like water in the sea

There is no sun in the zenith ~ Sir Kristian Goldmund Aumann
Thorns quotes by Sir Kristian Goldmund Aumann
Any man worth his salt has by the time he is forty-five accumulated a crown of thorns, and the problem is to learn to wear it over one ear. ~ Christopher Morley
Thorns quotes by Christopher Morley
Do you know why the leaves change colour, Makin?" They did look spectacular. The forest had grown around us as we traveled and the canopy burned with colour, from deepest red to flame orange, an autumn fire spreading in defiance of the rain.
"I don't know," he said, "Why do they change?"
"Before a tree sheds a leaf it pumps it full of all the poison it can't rid itself of otherwise. That red there - that's a man's skin blotching with burst veins after an assassin spikes his last meal with roto-weed. The poison spreading through him before he dies. ~ Mark Lawrence
Thorns quotes by Mark Lawrence
Remember, a person who cannot be angry cannot be loving. The roses grow only with the thorns. ~ Osho
Thorns quotes by Osho
When boys played "guerrilla warfare," which was their version of cowboys and Indians, the enemy side would have thorns glued onto their noses and say "hello" all the time. ~ Jung Chang
Thorns quotes by Jung Chang
Being a thoughtful person, I always have indulged myself in to things, life brought in my way and come-up with my own definitions and meanings of them. Somewhere deep into myself I always have been making conscious endeavors to improve my nature in order to uplift my life in a way that each moment I live enhance my interest in living the life and enjoy the beauty it encompass in itself.
I found life is always "Imperfect". Whenever, I saw flowers, I saw thorns with them as well with which they have made compromise in order to live and look beautiful. I saw butterflies with such little visual acuity that they cannot see the beauty of the garden they roam around. So I realized, these flowers and butterflies are there to beautify somebody else's world and they are not living for their selves only. This is life, that is how it works. So for me, it is interesting and beautiful when it has to do something good with somebody else as well. ~ Amna Farooq
Thorns quotes by Amna Farooq
I know who I am without anyone there to tell me. ~ Leigh Bardugo
Thorns quotes by Leigh Bardugo
I've seen first-hand the great enthusiasm Portland has for soccer; it's a soccer-smart fan base that generates an incredible atmosphere. I am very much looking forward to the first season of Thorns FC. ~ Cindy Parlow Cone
Thorns quotes by Cindy Parlow Cone
If you are a monster, stand up.
If you are a monster, a trickster, a fiend,
If you've built a steam-powered wishing machine
If you have a secret, a dark past, a scheme,
If you kidnap maidens or dabble in dreams
Come stand by me.

If you have been broken, stand up.
If you have been broken, abandoned, alone
If you have been starving, a creature of bone
If you live in a tower, a dungeon, a throne
If you weep for wanting, to be held, to be known,
Come stand by me.

If you are a savage, stand up.
If you are a witch, a dark queen, a black knight,
If you are a mummer, a pixie, a sprite,
If you are a pirate, a tomcat, a wright,
If you swear by the moon and you fight the hard fight,
Come stand by me.

If you are a devil, stand up.
If you are a villain, a madman, a beast,
If you are a strowler, a prowler, a priest,
If you are a dragon come sit at our feast,
For we all have stripes, and we all have horns,
We all have scales, tails, manes, claws and thorns
And here in the dark is where new worlds are born.
Come stand by me. ~ Catherynne M. Valente
Thorns quotes by Catherynne M. Valente
The bird with the thorn in its breast, it follows an immutable law; it is driven by it knows not what to impale itself, and die singing. At the very instant the thorn enters there is no awareness in it of the dying to come; it simply sings and sings until there is not the life left to utter another note. But we, when we put the thorns in our breasts, we know. We understand. And still we do it. Still we do it. ~ Colleen McCullough
Thorns quotes by Colleen McCullough
Be grateful for challenges because ... Had there been no difficulties and no thorns in the way, then [each woman and] man would have been in his primitive state and no progress made in civilisation and mental culture. ~ Anandi Gopal Joshi
Thorns quotes by Anandi Gopal Joshi
All around the castle, a briary hedge began to grow, with thorns as sharp as barbs. ~ Jane Yolen
Thorns quotes by Jane Yolen
Not every thought is a flower; some are thorns. But while a flower may make you fall asleep and too see dreams, a thorn will wake you up and make you to think! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Thorns quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
I have never yet managed to see the moment of the petals of a bud unfurling. I might dedicate the rest of my life to it and might still never see it. No, not might, I will: I will dedicate the rest of my life, in which I walk forward into this blossoming. When there's no blossom I will dead-head and wait. It'll be back. That's the nature of things.
As it is, I am careful when kissing, or when taking anyone in my arms. I warn them about the thorns. I treat myself with care. I guard against pests and frost-damage. I am careful with my roots. I know they need depth and darkness, and any shit that comes my way I know exactly what to do with. I'm composed when it comes to compost. ~ Ali Smith
Thorns quotes by Ali Smith
It'll be hard not to tease your folk sometimes."

Brishen couldn't imagine how she might go about such a thing. He had no idea if the Kai and the Gauri even knew the same jokes or found the same things funny. "What do you mean?"

He almost leapt out of his skin when Ildiko stared at him as both of her eyes drifted slowly down and over until they seemed to meet together, separated only by the elegant bridge of her nose.

"Lover of thorns and holy gods!" he yelped and clapped one hand across her eyes to shut out the sight. "Stop that," he ordered.

Ildiko laughed and pushed his hand away. She laughed even harder when she caught sight of his expression. "Wait," she gasped on a giggle. "I can do better. Want to see me make one eye cross and have the other stay still?"

Brishen reared back. "No!" He grimaced. "Nightmarish. I'll thank you to keep that particular talent to yourself, wife. ~ Grace Draven
Thorns quotes by Grace Draven
You have it in your power to make your days on Earth a path of flowers, instead of a path of thorns. ~ Sathya Sai Baba
Thorns quotes by Sathya Sai Baba
Focus on the roses: 'A person who gathers honey will not escape being stung by bees. A person who gathers roses will not escape being scratched by thorns.' The positive things in life also have negative aspects. Keep your focus on the beautiful roses of the world, and the thorns will seem trivial and inconsequential. ~ Zelig Pliskin
Thorns quotes by Zelig Pliskin
And it is not enough in the world for a wise brain to be ridiculed, it must also be wounded & mistreated; a head that is a treasury of wisdom should not expect any crown other than one of thorns. What garland can human wisdom expect when it sees what divine wisdom received? ~ Juana Ines De La Cruz
Thorns quotes by Juana Ines De La Cruz
If old age means a crown of thorns, the trick is to wear it jauntily. ~ Clare Boothe Luce
Thorns quotes by Clare Boothe Luce
When I close my eyes to see, to hear, to smell, to touch a country I have known, I feel my body shake and fill with joy as if a beloved person had come near me.

A rabbi was once asked the following question: 'When you say that the Jews should return to Palestine, you mean, surely, the heavenly, the immaterial, the spiritual Palestine, our true homeland?' The rabbi jabbed his staff into the ground in wrath and shouted, 'No! I want the Palestine down here, the one you can touch with your hands, with its stones, its thorns and its mud!'

Neither am I nourished by fleshless, abstract memories. If I expected my mind to distill from a turbid host of bodily joys and bitternesses an immaterial, crystal-clear thought, I would die of hunger. When I close my eyes in order to enjoy a country again, my five senses, the five mouth-filled tentacles of my body, pounce upon it and bring it to me. Colors, fruits, women. The smells of orchards, of filthy narrow alleys, of armpits. Endless snows with blue, glittering reflections. Scorching, wavy deserts of sand shimmering under the hot sun. Tears, cries, songs, distant bells of mules, camels or troikas. The acrid, nauseating stench of some Mongolian cities will never leave my nostrils. And I will eternally hold in my hands – eternally, that is, until my hands rot – the melons of Bukhara, the watermelons of the Volga, the cool, dainty hand of a Japanese girl…

For a time, in my early youth, I struggled to nourish my ~ Nikos Kazantzakis
Thorns quotes by Nikos Kazantzakis
In 1840 I was called from my farm to undertake the administration of public affairs and I foresaw that I was called to a bed of thorns. I now leave that bed which has afforded me little rest, and eagerly seek repose in the quiet enjoyments of rural life. ~ John Tyler
Thorns quotes by John Tyler
All things on earth have their price, and for truth we pay the dearest. We barter it for love and sympathy. The road to honour is paved with thorns; but on the path to truth, at every step you set your foot down on your heart. ~ Olive Schreiner
Thorns quotes by Olive Schreiner
I gave her roses and she blames me for the thorns ~ Rodney R. White
Thorns quotes by Rodney R. White
Why are roses kept for their blossoms rather than shunned for their thorns? ~ J. Aleksandr Wootton
Thorns quotes by J. Aleksandr Wootton
It is only by sacrificing everything to sensual pleasure that this being known as Man, cast into the world in spite of himself, may succeed in sowing a few roses on the thorns of life. ~ Marquis De Sade
Thorns quotes by Marquis De Sade
Once you decide to grow out the roses from your heart, and let it spread the roots all over. you should also start to learn to handle the thorns that grow out of their stem. ~ Akshay Vasu
Thorns quotes by Akshay Vasu
The true Christian reaction to suffering and sorrow is not the attitude of self-pity, fatalism or resentment; it is the spirit which takes life's difficulties as a God given opportunity, and regards its troubles as a sacred trust, and wears the thorns as a crown. ~ James Stewart
Thorns quotes by James Stewart
You can not pluck roses without fear of thorns, Nor enjoy a fair wife without danger of horns. ~ Benjamin Franklin
Thorns quotes by Benjamin Franklin
I saw Amar. Perched on a towering throne of thorns. There was no compassion in his eyes. Only steel. But there was also a blank look to his expression, as though he couldn't quite remember how he'd gotten there or what he was supposed to do next. Images rustled beneath my skin, lighting up behind my eyes. I saw us along the ocean at the edge of the world, his hands twisting the black curls of my hair. I saw him standing near the shore, smiling as he placed a wreath of rosemary and honey myrtle around my head like a crown. I saw our fingers interlace, felt the roughness of his hands against my own and heard him speak my name like a prayer. ~ Roshani Chokshi
Thorns quotes by Roshani Chokshi
At that moment I remembered something Cal had told me: that there is beauty in darkness in everything. Sorrow in joy, life and death, thorns on the rose. I knew then that I could not escape pain and torment any more than I could give up joy and beauty ~ Cate Tiernan
Thorns quotes by Cate Tiernan
Sing and rejoice ye children of the day and the light; for the Lord is at work in this thick night of darkness that may be felt: and the Truth doth flourish as the rose, and lilies do grow among the thorns and the plants atop the hills, and upon them the lambs doth skip and play. ~ George Fox
Thorns quotes by George Fox
Le spine della rosa sono nacoste dal fiore: the thorns of the rose are hidden by the bloom. ~ Lynda La Plante
Thorns quotes by Lynda La Plante
You cannot steal a roses beauty, even if you cover it with thorns. ~ Matshona Dhliwayo
Thorns quotes by Matshona Dhliwayo
You must have known it yourself, Erlend- a thicket of briers and thorns and nettles had you sowed around you- how could you draw a young maid in to your side and she not be torn and wounded and bleeding-" –p. 93 ~ Sigrid Undset
Thorns quotes by Sigrid Undset
A crown Golden in show, is but a wreath of thorns, Bring dangers, troubles, cares, and sleepless nights To him who wears the regal diadem ~ John Milton
Thorns quotes by John Milton
Some people are near- or farsighted - I'm thorn-sighted. The thorns on the rose are in really sharp definition for me, the rose petals a little fuzzier. ~ Danny Meyer
Thorns quotes by Danny Meyer
