I have to say I'm all for public flogging. One type of criminal that a public humiliation might work particularly well with are the juvenile delinquents, a lot of whom consider it a badge of honor to be sent to juvenile detention. And it might not be such a cool thing in the 'hood to be flogged publicly. ~ Ann Coulter
Badges quotes by Ann Coulter
I made no secret of the fact I'd love to stay in football and to do that, you need badges. I'm starting them and that's the next step for me - to continue this next season. ~ Alan Shearer
Badges quotes by Alan Shearer
And how does a place get spoiled? Well, it is spoiled by people very like us, which reminds us of a further paradox of travel. On the one hand travel is self-enhancing, on the other hand it is rather sneakily demoralizing. We use travel (in vane) to enhance our image: "Yes, sure, I've been to Fiji, but not for years. I hear it's gotten kind of touristy." But though we wear our travels, when they are over, like badges, while we are actually traveling we suffer constant little erosions of self-regard everywhere we go. Because, fond as we may be of the notion of ourselves as "travelers," shrewd as we may be in our choice of destination and lodging and wines, we are aware of ourselves as part of that declassed, identity-blurred worldwide mob. ~ Richard Todd
Badges quotes by Richard Todd
My first encounters with faith came about the time I was a Boy Scout, at about 14 or 15. I made the logical deduction that they operate the same way; I treated my faith like earning a merit badge, and everything about Christianity was about earning merit badges. ~ Max Lucado
Badges quotes by Max Lucado
Do not simplify. Do not worry about failure. Failure is a badge of honour. It means you risked failure. ~ Charlie Kaufman
Badges quotes by Charlie Kaufman
Before 'Cagney and Lacey,' we didn't follow officers home to find out what they did when they took their badges off and emptied their guns. So the idea that these women also had lives outside of work was really interesting to play. ~ Tyne Daly
Badges quotes by Tyne Daly
I do not seek unpopularity as a badge of honour, but sometimes it is the price of leadership and the cost of conviction. ~ Tony Blair
Badges quotes by Tony Blair
No one makes it through life without scars. It's impossible.
But they're not signs of shame;
they're badges of honor
showing that you fought and survived. ~ Meghan March
Badges quotes by Meghan March
Instead, the lesson is that false beliefs, once they've become culturally entrenched - once they've become tribal badges of honor - are very difficult to change, and changing them is no longer simply a matter of educating people. ~ Joshua D. Greene
Badges quotes by Joshua D. Greene
I enjoy my wrinkles and regard them as badges of distinction - I've worked hard for them! ~ Maggie Kuhn
Badges quotes by Maggie Kuhn
I've often wondered what alliances and affinities might arise without those badges of right and left. For example, the recent American militia movements were patriarchal, nostalgic, nationalist, gun-happy, and full of weird fantasies about the UN, but they had something in common with us: they prized the local and feared its erasure by the transnational. The guys drilling with guns might've been too weird to be our allies, but they were just the frothy foam on a big wave of alienation, suspicion and fear from people watching their livelihoods and their communities go down the tubes. ~ Rebecca Solnit
Badges quotes by Rebecca Solnit
They were coarse and crude. They made rude finger gestures to one another and they were their scars like badges. They were a family, unbreakable, loyal and absolutely powerful when they stood together. ~ Christine Feehan
Badges quotes by Christine Feehan
Without their uniforms, they were probably nobodies, rejects. Give a man a uniform. Give him a few sparkly badges, a purpose, a gun ... and suddenly, he was no longer just another kid trying to make it through life without being ridiculed. Suddenly, he was a part of something. Something important. Something powerful. Something greater than he could ever be on his own. It was amazing how empowering the group could be. ~ Kelseyleigh Reber
Badges quotes by Kelseyleigh Reber
People who live with OCD drag a mental sea anchor around. Obsession is a brake, a source of drag, not a badge of creativity, a mark of genius or an inconvenient side effect of some greater function. ~ David Adam
Badges quotes by David Adam
Two uniformed officers approached him at speed. Both were wearing Salvation Army badges and carrying some fearsomely bulky weapons labelled as 'Googles'.

One of them drew his Google and aimed it barrel-forward at my grandfather. ~ Tim Roux
Badges quotes by Tim Roux
At the stomp of boots on grass, I ease my eyes open. Aithinne leans down with a grin. "You didn't die. See? I told you it was easy." She offers me a hand and I take it, rising unsteadily to my feet.

"I've been bitten by some demonic woodland creature. My legs have been shredded by razor-sharp trees. We almost died. Easy? I'm getting you a damn dictionary."

I inspect my bleeding arm. The cut bisects five of the marks Lonnrach made, and I feel inexplicably proud of that. Good. Replace the old, bad memories with new badges. Start over.

"A dictionary," she repeats. "Is that a type of dessert?"

For the love of - "It's a type of book that explains the meaning of words."

"Oh. That sounds terribly dull. I was really hoping for dessert."

I'm hoping to end this rescue with my sanity intact. ~ Elizabeth May
Badges quotes by Elizabeth May
Change a virtue in its circumstances find it becomes a vice; change a vice in its circumstances, and it becomes a virtue. Regard the same quality from two sides; on one it is a fault, on the other a merit. The essential of a man is found concealed far below these moral badges. ~ Hippolyte Taine
Badges quotes by Hippolyte Taine
Vimes had believed all his life that the Watch were called coppers because they carried copper badges, but no, said Carrot, it comes from the old word cappere, to capture. ~ Terry Pratchett
Badges quotes by Terry Pratchett
The efficacy of fashion turns on the self's perception of itself either as a nought or at least as lacking something, and its perception or misperception of the splendid wholeness of public figures as evidenced by even the most carelessly worn badges of their substantiality - when in truth the selves of Jackie Onassis and Wallis Simpson and John Wayne are probably more insubstantial than most. Question: ~ Walker Percy
Badges quotes by Walker Percy
Heroes don't always wear capes, badges, or uniforms. Sometimes, they support those who do. ~ Andrea Randall
Badges quotes by Andrea Randall
I do not prize the word cheap. It is not a word of inspiration. It is the badge of poverty, the signal of distress. Cheap merchandise means cheap men and cheap men mean a cheap country. ~ William McKinley
Badges quotes by William McKinley
Franklin was the best known of the Founding Fathers. His death could not go without some sort of official notice. The House of Representatives, after listening to a brief tribute by James Madison, voted to wear badges of mourning for two months and then got on with business. ~ Edmund Morgan
Badges quotes by Edmund Morgan
I'm not going to allow anybody to hold a badge up over me or a cross or any other power symbol and say I'm going to kill you and you're just going to kneel down to me because I'm the law. ~ Ice-T
Badges quotes by Ice-T
The viewpoint character in each story is usually someone trapped in a living nightmare, but this doesn't guarantee that we and the protagonist are at one. In fact Woolrich often makes us pull away from the person at the center of the storm, splitting our reaction in two, stripping his protagonist of moral authority, denying us the luxury of unequivocal identification, drawing characters so psychologically warped and sometimes so despicable that a part of us wants to see them suffer. Woolrich also denies us the luxury of total disidentification with all sorts of sociopaths, especially those who wear badges. His Noir Cop tales are crammed with acts of police sadism, casually committed or at least endorsed by the detective protagonist. These monstrosities are explicitly condemned almost never and the moral outrage we feel has no internal support in the stories except the objective horror of what is shown, so that one might almost believe that a part of Woolrich wants us to enjoy the spectacles. If so, it's yet another instance of how his most powerful novels and stories are divided against themselves so as to evoke in us a divided response that mirrors his own self-division.

("Introduction") ~ Francis M. Nevins Jr.
Badges quotes by Francis M. Nevins Jr.
Animals struggle with each other for food or for leadership, but they do not, like human beings, struggle with each other for thatthat stands for food or leadership: such things as our paper symbols of wealth (money, bonds, titles), badges of rank to wear on our clothes, or low-number license plates, supposed by some people to stand for social precedence. For animals the relationship in which one thing stands for something else does not appear to exist except in very rudimentary form. ~ S.I. Hayakawa
Badges quotes by S.I. Hayakawa
Vibrato is the badge of tonal maturity. ~ Gerald Fischbach
Badges quotes by Gerald Fischbach
He also loved the city itself. Coming to and leaving Cousin Joe's, he would gorge himself on hot dogs and cafeteria pie, price cigarette lighters and snap-brim hats in store windows, follow the pushboys with their rustling racks of furs and trousers. There were sailors and prizefighters; there were bums, sad and menacing, and ladies in piped jackets with dogs in their handbags. Tommy would feel the sidewalks hum and shudder as the trains rolled past beneath him. He heard men swearing and singing opera. On a sunny day, his peripheral vision would be spangled with light winking off the chrome headlights of taxicabs, the buckles on ladies' shoes, the badges of policemen, the handles of pushcart lunch-wagons, the bulldog ornaments on the hoods of irate moving vans. This was Gotham City, Empire City, Metropolis. Its skies and rooftops were alive with men in capes and costumes, on the lookout for wrongdoers, saboteurs, and Communists. Tommy ~ Michael Chabon
Badges quotes by Michael Chabon
I was never the biggest kid or the best looking kid or the most popular kid, but that's not all it takes. Sometimes you turn those weaknesses into strengths and wear it like a badge and see what it does. ~ Colin Munroe
Badges quotes by Colin Munroe
I always thought that the badge a cop has was more like the shield that Captain America has. It's an obvious sign of good and something you'll protect other people with, but it will also protect you. ~ Judd Nelson
Badges quotes by Judd Nelson
You can stick a BMW badge on a dead cat - and people would still buy it. ~ Richard Hammond
Badges quotes by Richard Hammond
Flaws weren't pariah; foibles were badges of character. Not something to be brushed away in Photoshop. ~ Peter Tieryas
Badges quotes by Peter Tieryas
One bad review doesn't ruin my day because I realize what a badge of honor it is to get a bit of criticism at all. ~ Seth Godin
Badges quotes by Seth Godin
Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges. ~ Katharine Hepburn
Badges quotes by Katharine Hepburn
Bloom never pissed me off because there are critics out there, and he's one of them, who take their ignorance about popular culture as a badge of intellectual prowess. ~ Stephen King
Badges quotes by Stephen King
Classically, very few people have considered that cleanliness is next to godliness. A rank loincloth and hair in an advanced state of matted entanglement have generally been the badges of office of prophets whose injunction to disdain earthly things starts with soap. ~ Terry Pratchett
Badges quotes by Terry Pratchett
My brave husband came back from fighting the Turks and brought me a robe of silk and a necklace of human teeth. He sat up at night by his hearth telling tales of battle. Apparently the Turks are ten times more ferocious and fearless than the Scots. 'Perhaps we should invite them here to drive the Scots back,' I suggested, and he laughed, but he didn't kiss me. That's when I learned the truth about scars. A man with a battle scar is a veteran, a hero, given an honoured place at the fire. Small boys gaze up fascinated, dreaming of winning such badges of courage. Maids caress his thighs with their buttocks as they bend over to mull his ale. Women cluck and cosset, and if in time other men grow a little weary of that tale of honour, then they call for his cup to be filled again and again until he is fuddled and dozes quietly in the warmth of the embers.

But a scarred woman is not encouraged to tell her story. Boys jeer and mothers cross themselves. Pregnant women will not come close for fear that if they look upon such a sight, the infant in their belly will be marked. You've heard of the tales of Beauty and the Beast no doubt. How a fair maid falls in love with a monster and sees the beauty of his soul beneath the hideous visage. But you've never heard the tale of the handsome man falling for the monstrous woman and finding joy in her love, because it doesn't happen, not even in fairytales. The truth is that the scarred woman's husband buys her a good thick veil and ~ Karen Maitland
Badges quotes by Karen Maitland
I was racking up prescription slips like Boy Scout badges. What didn't I have? ~ Jason Diamond
Badges quotes by Jason Diamond
The keeping of an idle woman is a badge of superior social status. ~ Dorothy L. Sayers
Badges quotes by Dorothy L. Sayers
War is a kind of superstition, the pageantry of arms and badges corrupts the imagination of men. ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley
Badges quotes by Percy Bysshe Shelley
I wear glasses myself. As an affectation, as a badge of high intellect and to see with. ~ Simon Munnery
Badges quotes by Simon Munnery
Don't get me started on the little airplane name badges, Natalie grumbled. ~ Peter Lerangis
Badges quotes by Peter Lerangis
Merit badges are these little patches you get for learning how to do all sorts of manly stuff. ~ Jeff Kinney
Badges quotes by Jeff Kinney
I have met convicted child molesters before. They don't waer badges or brands or tattoos announcing their vice. It's hidden under a soft, grandfatherly smile; it's tucked in the pocket of a buttoned down shirt. They look the rest of us, and that's what makes it so frightening - to know that these beasts move among us, and we are none the wisest.
They have girlfriends and wives who have loved them, unaware. ~ Jodi Picoult
Badges quotes by Jodi Picoult
They flank me - depression on my left, loneliness on my right. They don't need to show their badges. I know these guys very well ... Then they frisk me. They empty my pockets of any joy I had been carrying there. Depression even confiscates my identity; but he always does that. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Badges quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
exists. Why all these speeches and monuments. Tradition is the crown of the tyrant. I eye all the Golds in their badges and Sigils and standards, all worn to legitimize corrupt reign, and to alienate the people. Make them feel they watch a species beyond their comprehension. ~ Pierce Brown
Badges quotes by Pierce Brown
Without that
courage, an officer is just another person in the crowd of badges. Demonstrating
courage takes practice. Many police professionals have the knowledge and ability
to lead. Yet, they may choose not to exercise their leadership skills - not to do the
right thing - because they fear losing the rewards that conformity provides (such ~ P.J. Ortmeier
Badges quotes by P.J. Ortmeier
Until competency management platforms gain widespread acceptance, "badges" or "stackable credentials" are unlikely to gain much traction. The notion that educated adults, like the boy and girl scouts they once were, will prefer to flaunt a collection of badges testifying to skills they have demonstrated is flawed for one reason. While degrees are validated by a single institution with a recognizable form (i.e., colleges and universities), who is validating a collection of badges? Who vouches that a student has demonstrated a given skill? Although many visionary organizations are seeking to enter this market, outside of IT none currently has the ability or credibility to authenticate such credentials in a way that would be acceptable to a critical mass of employers and students. ~ Ryan Craig
Badges quotes by Ryan Craig
And here, according to Trout, was the reason human beings could not reject ideas because they were bad: "Ideas on Earth were badges of friendship or enmity. Their content did not matter. Friends agreed with friends, in order to express friendliness. Enemies disagreed with enemies, in order to express enmity.

"The ideas Earthlings held didn't matter for hundreds of thousands of years, since they couldn't do much about them anyway. Ideas might as well be badges as anything.

"They even had a saying about the futility of ideas: 'If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.'

"And then Earthlings discovered tools. Suddenly agreeing with friends could be a form of suicide or worse. But agreements went on, not for the sake of common sense or decency or self-preservation, but for friendliness.

"Earthlings went on being friendly, when they should have been thinking instead. And even when they built computers to do some thinking for them, they designed them not so much for wisdom as for friendliness. So they were doomed. Homicidal beggars could ride. ~ Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Badges quotes by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Life's coming to me in flashes,
Wearing my bruises like badges,
Don't know when I learned to play with matches,
Must want it all to end in ashes. ~ Taylor Jenkins Reid
Badges quotes by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I think good-looking people seldom make good television. And American television studios almost concede before they start: 'Well, it won't be good, but at least it'll be good-looking. We'll have nice-looking girls in tight shirts with F.B.I. badges and fit-looking guys with lots of hair gel vaulting over things.' ~ Hugh Laurie
Badges quotes by Hugh Laurie
I'm a star: SHERIFF BADGE. ~ Nicki Minaj
Badges quotes by Nicki Minaj
Part of the true luxury of "earned laziness" are the braggin rights that come along with being purposefully and publicly lazy. It is a badge of distinction, an emblem of success, without having to say too much about it. It labels us, affords us kudos, and raises our profile in the "pecking order" of our fellow troglodytes. It says to others, "See, I've done so well that I can afford to do nothing at all whenever I so choose! ~ Al Gini
Badges quotes by Al Gini
I am ashamed to think how easily we capitulate to badges and names, to large societies and dead institutions. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Badges quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Someone out there was about to find that their worst nightmare was a maddened Librarian. With a badge. ~ Terry Pratchett
Badges quotes by Terry Pratchett
Wrinkles ought to be worn as a badge of honour, as a mark of survival if not wisdom. ~ Mal Fletcher
Badges quotes by Mal Fletcher
Judge [Samuel] Alito should see criticism as a badge of honor worn by many past and present members of the Court. ~ Chuck Grassley
Badges quotes by Chuck Grassley
People in the countryside carry a sense of dignity. They wear it, don't they? Like a badge? I'm being genuine. ~ Khaled Hosseini
Badges quotes by Khaled Hosseini
walked down the hill and stuck out my thumb, standing in the same spot where I had stood when I hitchhiked to high school. My clothes and gear were in my official Boy Scout backpack, a big old thing on an aluminum rack, with my sleeping bag and pup tent lashed to it. I'd been a serious Boy Scout - I joined at 12, after my failed Little League career, and took to it immediately, racking up merit badges and making it all the way to Eagle Scout. I knew first aid, how to start a fire in the rain, how to make a mean camp stew, and lots of other useful stuff. And I didn't mind sleeping outside, which was a good thing, since there was no way I could afford motels. My official Boy Scout sheath knife, a serious piece of business with a leather-wrapped handle and a five-inch blade, was also in the pack; I'd move it into my boot by the end of the first day. ~ David Noonan
Badges quotes by David Noonan
Why should you think that I should woo in scorn?
Scorn and derision never come in tears:
Look, when I vow, I weep; and vows so born,
In their nativity all truth appears.
How can these things in me seem scorn to you,
Bearing the badge of faith, to prove them true? ~ William Shakespeare
Badges quotes by William Shakespeare
I marvel again at the nakedness of men's lives: the showers right out in the open, the body exposed for inspection and comparison, the public display of privates. What is it for? What purposes of reassurance does it serve? The flashing of a badge, look, everyone, all is in order, I belong here. Why don't women have to prove to one another that they are women? Some form of unbuttoning, some split-crotch routine, just as casual. A doglike sniffing. ~ Margaret Atwood
Badges quotes by Margaret Atwood
I hate this guy," Ari muttered, keeping his head down
"There's a club," I told him. "The Haters of ter Borcht Club. Have you gotten your badge yet? ~ James Patterson
Badges quotes by James Patterson
The campfires provide enough plain old regular visible light to show this sorry affair for what it is: a bunch of demented Boy Scouts, a jamboree without merit badges or hygiene. ~ Neal Stephenson
Badges quotes by Neal Stephenson
The Beats are really nothing more than a troop of malevolent Boy Scouts trying to earn badges for cultural arson. ~ Carlene Bauer
Badges quotes by Carlene Bauer
An air of fashion, which is but a badge of slavery ... proves that the soul has not a strong individual character. ~ Mary Wollstonecraft
Badges quotes by Mary Wollstonecraft
The true meaning of America, you ask? It's in a Texas rodeo, in a policeman's badge, in the sound of laughing children, in a political rally, in a newspaper ... In all these things, and many more, you'll find America. In all these things, you'll find freedom. And freedom is what America means to the world. And to me. ~ Audie Murphy
Badges quotes by Audie Murphy
This fucking city is full of nothing but thugs, money grubbing porn-bitches, and hustlers. I'm calling the police." Ex fumed as he struggled to pull his cell from his pocket.

If Syn weren't so damn angry it would've been funny as shit the way the man's jaw dropped when God and Day both pulled their gold badges out from under their shirts. Day smiled that sinister grin and kneeled in front of them, speaking in an official tone, "911, what is your emergency? ~ A.E. Via
Badges quotes by A.E. Via
And while a bald head and a looped ribbon were seen as badges of courage and hope, her reluctant vocabulary and vanishing memories advertised mental instability and impending insanity. Those with cancer could expect to be supported by their community. Alice expected to be an outcast. ~ Lisa Genova
Badges quotes by Lisa Genova
Mutability is the badge of infirmity. It is seldom that a man continues to wish and design the same thing two days alike. Now he is for marrying; and now a mistress is preferred to a wife. Now he is ambitious and aspiring; presently the meanest servant is not more humble than he. This hour he squanders his money away; the next he turns miser. Sometimes he is frugal and serious; at other times profuse, airy, and gay. ~ Pierre Charron
Badges quotes by Pierre Charron
I've enjoyed the accommodations offered by police departments from Florida to Hawaii. Any time I saw a badge, something in me would snap. ~ Grace Slick
Badges quotes by Grace Slick
Lipstick is the red badge of courage. ~ Man Ray
Badges quotes by Man Ray
I've started doing my coaching badges, I'd like to be a manager one day. ~ Wayne Rooney
Badges quotes by Wayne Rooney
The Girl Guides kept up their activities as well, giving Elizabeth an unexpectedly democratic experience when refugees from London's bomb-ravaged East End were taken in by families on the Windsor estate and joined the troop. The girls earned their cooking badges, with instruction from a castle housekeeper, by baking cakes and scones (a talent Elizabeth would later display for a U.S. president) and making stew and soup. With their Cockney accents and rough ways, the refugees gave the future Queen no deference, calling her Lilibet, the nickname even daughters of aristocrats were forbidden to use, and compelling her to wash dishes in an oily tub of water ~ Sally Bedell Smith
Badges quotes by Sally Bedell Smith
Ideas on earth were badges of friendship or enimity. Their content did not matter. Friends agreed with friends, in order to express friendliness. Enemies disagreed with enemies, in order to express enimity. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Badges quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
Depression on my left, Loneliness on my right. They don't need to show me thier badges. I know these guys very well. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Badges quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
Old as carbon," Nix agreed. "And so powerful I'm working on my demigoddess badges. ~ Kresley Cole
Badges quotes by Kresley Cole
Why a unicorn? Maybe the unicorn, too, is one of the Men Without Women. I mean, I've never seen a unicorn couple. He -- it has to be a he, right? -- is always alone, sharp horn thrust toward the sky. Maybe we should adopt him as the symbol of Men Without Women, of the loneliness we carry as our burden. Perhaps we should sew unicorn badges on our breast pockets and hats, and quietly parade down streets all over the world. No music, no flags, no ticker tape. Probably. ~ Haruki Murakami
Badges quotes by Haruki Murakami
The Detective was different. Not that he wasn't a good man; Willie had heard enough about him to understand that he was the kind who didn't like to turn away from another's pain, the kind who couldn't put a pillow over his ears to drown out the cries of strangers. Those scars he had were badges of courage, and Willie knew that there were others hidden beneath his clothes, and still more deep inside, right beneath the skin and down to the soul. No, it was just that whatever goodness was there coexisted with rage and grief and loss. ~ John Connolly
Badges quotes by John Connolly
You'll still get guys with an array of badges to demonstrate their importance, but that just excludes people. I think fandom is more inclusive now. ~ Charles Stross
Badges quotes by Charles Stross
History is filled with examples of men and women who rendered highly effective performance without the conventional badges of accomplishment in terms of certificates, diplomas, or degrees. Diplomas and tests are useful servants, but Congress has mandated the commonsense proposition that they are not to become masters of reality. ~ Warren E. Burger
Badges quotes by Warren E. Burger
Doobie always wanted to see the badge. It was shiny, and he was eight. ~ Eoin Colfer
Badges quotes by Eoin Colfer
Don't let Ron see what's on those Slytherin's badges," she whispered urgently.
Harry looked questioningly at her, but she shook her head warningly; Ron had just ambled over to them, looking lost and desparate.
"Good luck, Ron," said Hermione, standing on tiptoe and kissing him on the cheek. "And you, Harry
"
Ron seemed to come to himself slightly as they walked back across the Great Hall. He touched the spot on his face where Hermione had kissed him, looking puzzled, as though he was not quite sure what had just happened. ~ J.K. Rowling
Badges quotes by J.K. Rowling
It feels good, it feels like a badge of honor, honestly. Amongst the artists here, in California, that festival is such a big deal. People live and die for Coachella. So to be a part of it on such a big scale is really flattering, and I feel really lucky to be part of the community. ~ Zella Day
Badges quotes by Zella Day
We were scarecrows in blue uniforms. After a grand total of five days of blackboard instruction and fifty rounds at the NYPD firing range, my new police academy classmates and I were standing out on the sidewalks of central Brooklyn pretending to be police officers. They gave us badges. They gave us handcuffs. They gave us guns - standard police-issue Smith & Wesson .38 Specials. They told us, "Good luck." In early July 1966, riots had broken out in East New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Brownsville, Brooklyn. Hundreds of angry young men were roaming the streets and throwing bottles and rocks. Already they had injured police officers and attempted to flip over a radio car. On one corner, police found eighteen Molotov cocktails. The borough commander was calling for reinforcements - and fast. ~ Ray Kelly
Badges quotes by Ray Kelly
As long as our civilisation keeps trundling along generally forwards, then there is the possibility of a future where ethnicity is merely an interesting badge, not a uniform you can't take off. ~ David Mitchell
Badges quotes by David Mitchell
Repose and cheerfulness is the badge of the gentleman; repose in energy. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Badges quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
In fact almost everyone in my yearbook wrote the same thing to me: "To weird girl, you're nice." I didn't think it was bad. When I showed my mother she said, "Everyone is different." Being weird became my tool. I'm weird; that's who I am. It was my coping badge. ~ Jenny Lawson
Badges quotes by Jenny Lawson
Some people's merit badges are their names on libraries, museum, and universities" -Rydr ~ Paul Mosier
Badges quotes by Paul Mosier
Ellen had long ago stopped being embarrassed by temper tantrums. She flipped it and wore it like a badge of honor. A temper tantrum was a sign that a mom said no when it counted. ~ Lisa Scottoline
Badges quotes by Lisa Scottoline
Government, like dress, is the badge of lost innocence; the palaces of kings are built on the ruins of the bowers of paradise. ~ Thomas Paine
Badges quotes by Thomas Paine
Both Matilda and Lavender were enthralled. It was quite clear to them that they were at this moment standing in the presence of a master. Here was somebody who had brought the art of skulduggery to the highest point of perfection, somebody, moreover, who was willing to risk life and limb in pursuit of her calling. They gazed in wonder at this goddess, and suddenly even the boil on her nose was no longer a blemish but a badge of courage. ~ Roald Dahl
Badges quotes by Roald Dahl
A woman with cut hair is a filthy spectacle, and much like a monsterit being natural and comely to women to nourish their hair, which even God and nature have given them for a covering, a token of subjection, and a natural badge to distinguish them from men. ~ William Prynne
Badges quotes by William Prynne
Whether our feet are compressed in iron shoes, our faces hidden with veils and masks; whether yoked with cows to draw the plow through its furrows, or classed with idiots, lunatics and criminals in the laws and constitutions of the State, the principle is the same; for the humiliations of the spirit are as real as the visible badges of servitude. ~ Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Badges quotes by Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Some bruises you wear like badges of honour: when you got it playing rugby, or quad racing, or falling off something while drunk, no opportunity is lost to show off a good contusion. A bruise inflicted by someone else, however, is a whole other story: it's like a big flashing arrow marking you out as punchable, and before long there'll be boys queuing up to add bruises of their own, as if they'd just been waiting for somebody to show them it could be done. ~ Paul Murray
Badges quotes by Paul Murray
I wish I could view the belly that oozes over the top of my pants as a badge of maternal honor. I do try. I make sure that the women whose looks I admire all have sufficient fat reserves to survive a famine, and I make a lot of snide comments about the skeletal likes of Lara Flynn Boyle and Paris Hilton. ~ Ayelet Waldman
Badges quotes by Ayelet Waldman
We make enemies, sometimes through no fault of our own, and sometimes our enemies become badges of honor. ~ Susan Rieger
Badges quotes by Susan Rieger
But despite their heroic acts, the Vietnam Veterans of America continued to struggle to establish a combat badge in honor of these brave pilots and medics. ~ Tim Holden
Badges quotes by Tim Holden
Birthdays are a reward for having shown up 365 days in a row. It's like getting a badge for attendance. ~ Gina Barreca
Badges quotes by Gina Barreca
The true badge of courage is overcoming the fear of men. ~ Lynn G. Robbins
Badges quotes by Lynn G. Robbins
...spells of incarceration or exile were almost badges of honour for Enlightenment writers. ~ Kate Berridge
Badges quotes by Kate Berridge
The verdicts today should send the message that within the police department there is no greater betrayal of the badge and of the brotherhood than to ensnare another officer in a web of lies and deceit. ~ Loretta Lynch
