I think every one who has some vague belief in God, until he becomes a Christian, has the idea of an exam, or of a bargain in his mind. Blood sprayed on the walls as far back as the arched gateway, limbs were shorn off, and Mullone watched in horror as a bloodied head tumbled down the sloped street towards the barricade.
