Behavioral Shifts to Overcome Excessive Hesitancy

Important: So far we've been focusing on how tweaking your thinking can help shift your behavior. This is important, but it's only half the story. People are usually quite good at identifying how changes in thoughts or feelings may lead to changes in behavior, such as "When I have more energy, I'll do more exercise" or "When I have more ideas, I'll take more action." However, people tend to underestimate the impact of changing their behavior on their thoughts and feelings, such as "When I exercise more, l'll have more energy" or "When I take more actions, I'll have more ideas." Don't make the mistake of thinking you need to wait for your thoughts to change before you try behavioral shifts. Mental and behavioral shifts go hand in hand. When you start making changes in your behavior (even subtle ones), you'll notice that all kinds of thoughts, including your view of yourself, start to shift. Changing your behavior, without waiting for you thoughts to always shift first, is one of the best and fastest ways you can reduce your anxiety. That's why a cognitive behavioral approach focuses on both thoughts and behaviors. ~ Alice Boyes
Story People quotes by Alice Boyes
I wanted to write with emotional honesty and tell a story people could connect with. And I wanted people to know how the foster system in America fails children; and how, at 18, they fall through the cracks. Then we can all work together and give support. ~ Vanessa Diffenbaugh
Story People quotes by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
I used to think that if you changed from ... valuing one thing to valuing another, it was because you'd learnt something new, understood something better. And it's not like that at all. I just value what I'm stuck with. That's it, that's the whole story. People make a virtue out of necessity. They sanctify what they can't escape. ~ Greg Egan
Story People quotes by Greg Egan
I'm certainly hoping that 3D gets to the point where people do not notice it because once they stop noticing it, it just becomes another tool and an aid to help tell a story. ~ Steven Spielberg
Story People quotes by Steven Spielberg
Other people's stories may become part of your own, the foundation of it, the ground it goes on. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Story People quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
For me, as an actress, one of the most essential things that I need to know is what do I want for and from the people around me in the story. ~ Mary McDonnell
Story People quotes by Mary McDonnell
We have in our head something called story grammar. We see the world as a series of episodes rather than logical propositions ... In our serious society, storytelling is seen as being soft. But people process the world through story. ~ Daniel H. Pink
Story People quotes by Daniel H. Pink
It doesn't get any more underground, conscious or indie than Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, but because they got a couple of really big pop hits, actually some of the biggest pop hits that hip-hop has ever seen, people are missing that part of their story. People are not counting that blessing. ~ Talib Kweli
Story People quotes by Talib Kweli
One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story people often interrupted her to tell her that they once had something just like that happen to them. Subtly her pain became a story about themselves. Eventually she stopped talking to most people. It was just too lonely. We connect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care. Many people with cancer talk about the relief of having someone just listen. ~ Rachel Naomi Remen
Story People quotes by Rachel Naomi Remen
Share with people who have earned the right to hear your story. ~ Brene Brown
Story People quotes by Brene Brown
Maybe some people are just meant to be in the same story. ~ Jandy Nelson
Story People quotes by Jandy Nelson
I was still seeing pirates in my old way, as almost-imaginary, adventure-story people with parrots on their shoulders, rather than the kind who shoot cannons at parents. ~ Jaclyn Moriarty
Story People quotes by Jaclyn Moriarty
Memories were moving pictures in which meaning was constantly in flux. They were stories people told themselves. ~ Melissa De La Cruz
Story People quotes by Melissa De La Cruz
That is the American story. People, just like you, following their passions, determined to meet the times on their own terms. They weren't doing it for the money. Their titles weren't fancy. But they changed the course of history and so can you. ~ Barack Obama
Story People quotes by Barack Obama
There are no souls, Melba thought with a touch of pity. We are bags of meat with a little electricity running through them. No ghosts, no spirits, no souls. The only thing that survives is the story people tell about you. ~ James S.A. Corey
Story People quotes by James S.A. Corey
A story only matters, I suspect, to the extent that the people in the story change. ~ Neil Gaiman
Story People quotes by Neil Gaiman
People tend to forget that the word "history" contains the word "story". ~ Ken Burns
Story People quotes by Ken Burns
Whoever is writing in the United States is using the American Dream as an ironical pole of his story. People elsewhere tend to accept, to a far greater degree anyway, that the conditions of life are hostile to mans pretensions. ~ Arthur Miller
Story People quotes by Arthur Miller
I'm not sure if there's one right place I'm supposed to be, he said, but I know a couple of wrong places I'd give a second try in a heartbeat. ~ Brian Andreas
Story People quotes by Brian Andreas
This used to be a mean monster until he got sick one winter with the flu & stayed in bed & watched too much Little House on the Prairie & now the littlest thing & he starts to cry. ~ Brian Andreas
Story People quotes by Brian Andreas
The people who knew me and knew my work and trusted me, they knew then as they do now that I've never fabricated or plagiarized a story. People who know me know I didn't do this. ~ Jack Kelley
Story People quotes by Jack Kelley
That's how it is: some people are content to wait till you ask, while others jump right in with the whole story. ~ Barbara Kingsolver
Story People quotes by Barbara Kingsolver
This is why I never wanted to know what really happened on 9/11. This is so awful, I can't believe what we are saying, but it makes so much more sense than the government's official story. People in our own government arranged this. The entire event, all the people, were just pawns in their game and they played the public as fools. And worst yet, if anyone questioned their story, they were made to look and feel like a terrorist or an unpatriotic traitor. If you follow the money, it's easy to see that not one Arab country has benefited from this event. ~ Rebekah Roth
Story People quotes by Rebekah Roth
People who know various movie versions don't really know the story. ~ David Morrell
Story People quotes by David Morrell
It was the kind of story everybody likes, about a tough girl who becomes a truer version of herself by uncovering her vulnerability. It was the kind of story people like because its universe is played out in the story of one person. It was the kind of story (dare I say it?) that women are supposed to write because all its truths are grounded in a single lie: denying chaos. ~ Chris Kraus
Story People quotes by Chris Kraus
It's easy for people to say stuff when they don't know the full story. ~ Brittney Griner
Story People quotes by Brittney Griner
let's get our semantics straight. Story does not equal fiction, much less "lies." It's the world we Christians inhabit as "people of the Book." We are story people. All ~ Sarah Arthur
Story People quotes by Sarah Arthur
While a good story must give me a role, and must extend beyond my horizons, it need not be true. A story can be pure fiction, and yet provide me with an identity and make me feel that my life has meaning. Indeed, to the best of our scientific understanding, none of the thousands of stories that different cultures, religions and tribes have invented throughout history is true. They are all just human inventions. If you ask for the true meaning of life and get a story in reply, know that this is the wrong answer. The exact details don't really matter. Any story is wrong, simply for being a story. The universe just does not work like a story.
So why do people believe in these fictions? One reason is that their personal identity is built on the story. People are taught to believe in the story from early childhood. They hear it from their parents, their teachers, their neighbours and the general culture long before they develop the intellectual and emotional independence necessary to question and verify such stories. By the time their intellect matures, they are so heavily invested in the story, that they are far more likely to use their intellect to rationalise the story than to doubt it. Most people who go on identity quests are like children going treasure hunting. They find only what their parents have hidden for them in advance.
Second, not only our personal identities but also our collective institutions are built on the story. Consequently, it is extremely frighte ~ Yuval Noah Harari
Story People quotes by Yuval Noah Harari
A few said they'd be horses. Most said they'd be some sort of cat. My friend said she'd like to come back as a porcupine. I don't like crowds, she said. ~ Brian Andreas
Story People quotes by Brian Andreas
Women's books are kind of discriminated against. If a man writes a book about his family stories, people think of it as literature. If it's a woman, she's 'spilling her guts,' and it's not art. ~ Erica Jong
Story People quotes by Erica Jong
What I'm mostly good at is sleeping, he once told me in confidence, but he added, I don't see much future in it. ~ Brian Andreas
Story People quotes by Brian Andreas
Start here & go until you die, he said. What's so complicated about that? ~ Brian Andreas
Story People quotes by Brian Andreas
If someone writes a great story, people praise the author, not the pen. People don't say, 'Oh what an incredible pen ... where can I get a pen like this so I can write great stories?' Well, I am just a pen in the hands of the Lord. He is the author. All praise should go to him. ~ Keith Green
Story People quotes by Keith Green
Georgia's skin buzzed as she approached the heavy wooden doors. She swallowed hard. She didn't put much stock in church. Church was a place people went, a story people told. Most of the time, those stories didn't impress her much.
Faith, however, was another matter. Faith of any creed was sacred. Faith of every kind had power.
St. Jude was chock-full of faith. ~ Laura Oliva
Story People quotes by Laura Oliva
The power of the human spirit inspires me. Movies, books, stories, people, anything that reminds us that we are more than just this physical body and our capacity for love and courage can bend reality. ~ Caity Lotz
Story People quotes by Caity Lotz
What's funny is that people think, "Well there has to be something more than wrestling, because wrestling has such an absurd quality to it." But if you tell a love story, people don't ask what else is in there. They say, "Oh, it's just a love story." All stories have many levels, but these ones show their hand and say, "You might want to look a little deeper." ~ John Darnielle
Story People quotes by John Darnielle
If you were smart, you'd probably spend more time stretching, he said & I said, If I were really smart, I'd probably spend more time just sitting in the shade drinking lemonade. ~ Brian Andreas
Story People quotes by Brian Andreas
We use shorts at the studio extensively to develop talent. I always love to give opportunities for young story people, animators, layout people something like that to take the next step up in their career and try things out. ~ John Lasseter
Story People quotes by John Lasseter
I do think that even with entertainment and telling stories, people in the entertainment industry have such a beautiful position in the world to speak about things that they're passionate about in a way that can grab people more than just sitting and telling someone about something, because you can show it visually. ~ Jennifer Love Hewitt
Story People quotes by Jennifer Love Hewitt
I don't really like coffee, she said, but I don't really like it when my head hits my desk when I fall asleep either. ~ Brian Andreas
Story People quotes by Brian Andreas
Simplifying people was a way of not having to think too much about them, to make them fit into your own story. People were inconvenient, though. Behind the idea of a person you constructed to suit yourself, the people you loved had their own stories- whole worlds going on inside- and you ignored them at your peril. ~ Libba Bray
Story People quotes by Libba Bray
The secret to being successful is to find a way to bring yourself through, even in your stories. People are looking for the essence of your truth. When you can bring your own truth to it, that's when it works. ~ Oprah Winfrey
Story People quotes by Oprah Winfrey
I have looked down the long days of our lives together, she said & in all directions, there is no future without love" (10/14/11) ~ Story People
Story People quotes by Story People
Everyone has a masculine and feminine side; masculine qualities and feminine qualities. We've all got these sides to ourselves. And clothes can tell that story. People would think this is very unsympathetic, but I would always say to people, you don't actually need to go through with an operation, can't you just be? You are who you are! But then people say to me, "Oh, you're really dreadful, how would you know?". ~ Vivienne Westwood
Story People quotes by Vivienne Westwood
I get a lot of inspiration from research in mythology and folklore. I find that, you know, stories people told each other thousands of years ago are still relevant now. ~ Cassandra Clare
Story People quotes by Cassandra Clare
Quality, relevant content can't be spotted by an algorithm. You can't subscribe to it. You need people - actual human beings - to create or curate it. ~ Kristina Halvorson
Story People quotes by Kristina Halvorson
Love is everywhere, and I am loving and lovable, and to hold on to that new affirmation and to repeat it often, then it will become true for me. Now, loving people will come into my life, the people already in my life will become more loving to me, and I will find myself easily expressing love to others. ~ Louise L. Hay
Story People quotes by Louise L. Hay
The minute you start making calculations about what people will think of you as a person based on your work as an actor, you're on the road to becoming a bad one. ~ Rob Lowe
Story People quotes by Rob Lowe
Distances and days existed in themselves then; they all had a story. They were not barriers. If a person wanted to get to the moon, there is a way; it all depended on whether you knew the directions ... on whether you knew the story of how others before you had gone. He had believed in the stories for a long time, until the teachers at Indian school taught him not to believe in that kind of "nonsense". But they had been wrong. ~ Leslie Marmon Silko
Story People quotes by Leslie Marmon Silko
What I can do is to go out and talk about the problems and solutions, make people aware of the scope of the problems, get them to become advocates for a turnaround, and convince them to develop an action plan, targeted to their community, to deal with young people. [They need to] find out what the kids want to do - dances, midnight-basketball leagues. ~ Joycelyn Elders
Story People quotes by Joycelyn Elders
Ordinary people need to lead and not sit there and think that governments are going to spoon-feed them and look after them and look after the country, because they won't. ~ Ian Kiernan
Story People quotes by Ian Kiernan
I always thought I had crooked eyebrows and crooked teeth. That's why I never understood why people called me a beauty. ~ Lauren Bacall
Story People quotes by Lauren Bacall
When you're as tall as I am, you have no public privacy. People are constantly coming up and talking to you. Constantly. You have one of two ways to go: you engage with people, or you become really bitter. I choose to engage. ~ Mark Bradford
Story People quotes by Mark Bradford
waiting for the bus
waiting for a bus
under shadeless tree,
blacks, hispanics, asians ~
the tired, the poor,
the great unwashed,
the huddled masses
yearning to breathe free ~
anchored with bags
waiting for their ride home
or to a wedding,
funeral, baptism,
maybe a second job

they glance
nervously, repeatedly
at wristwatches,
cell phones,
the time-table,
the axis of the sun,
the bus is late
as usual

finally it stops,
braking with an owl's screech,
opening its door
with a cobra's hiss

they reach for their wallets, purses
for coins and tokens to hand sharon martinez,
the ferrywoman of 14th Street,
to cross the broad way sticks

i'm not too proud
to draw my poetry
from the crowd ~
from the wretched refuse,
the tempest-tossed homeless
the common people
huddling under bus shelters ~
for the sacred, my friend, does not dwell
in churches, temples, mosques or synagogues ~
it dwells most profoundly
in the stink and sweat
of poverty ~ Beryl Dov
Story People quotes by Beryl Dov
A typical software project can present more opportunities to learn from mistakes than some people get in a lifetime. ~ Steve McConnell
Story People quotes by Steve McConnell
People talk of the Sufi way. Wrong. If there is a way, it's not Sufism. ~ Art Hochberg
Story People quotes by Art Hochberg
Growing up, I looked to people who had the same issues as me and were still living great lives. ~ Molly Tarlov
Story People quotes by Molly Tarlov
It had been one of the biggest landgrabs in the city's history and Bosch knew the story well, having tried all his life to counter his love of baseball and the Dodgers with the ugly story buried beneath the diamond where, as a boy, he watched Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale pitch. It seemed to him that every gleaming success in the city had a dark seam to it somewhere, usually just out of view. ~ Michael Connelly
Story People quotes by Michael Connelly
Still, I also know that most people, including me, tend to applaud the wrong things: the showy, dramatic record-setting sprint rather than the years of dogged preparation or the unwavering grace displayed during a string of losses. ~ Chris Hadfield
Story People quotes by Chris Hadfield
Countless people ... will hate the New World Order ... and will die protesting against it ... we have to bear in mind the distress of a generation or so of malcontents ... ~ H.G.Wells
Story People quotes by H.G.Wells
All people deserve access to health at prices they can afford. ~ Jacqueline Novogratz
Story People quotes by Jacqueline Novogratz
The term 'race' has deliberately been placed within inverted commas in order to stress that it is not a scientific term. Whereas it was for some time fashionable to divide humanity into four main races, and racial labels are still used to classify people in some countries (such as the USA), modern genetics tends not to speak of races. There are two principal reasons for this. First, there has always been so much interbreeding between human populations that it would be meaningless to talk of fixed boundaries between races. Second, the distribution of hereditary physical traits does not follow clear boundaries (Cavalli-Sforza et al., 1994). In other ~ Thomas Hylland Eriksen
Story People quotes by Thomas Hylland Eriksen
If young people could only realize that a happy marriage depends not only on the present, but upon the past, they would be more reluctant to enter into loose, intimate relations with anyone and everyone. ~ Billy Graham
Story People quotes by Billy Graham
Bucky's expression wasn't hostile, but it was serious. "Someday I'm going to fight and you won't be at my back."
"Nonsense. I'm your friend. Who I work for doesn't change that."
"If you leave it too long, you won't have a choice anymore. If the Steam Council turns on the people, each of us is going to have to decide where we belong."
"And you're going to play the rebel? You won't even carry a gun," Tobias snapped. "Your father may own an arms factory, but you make toys for a living."
"I don't carry a gun because I'm too good a shot," Bucky said quietly. "But when I fire, I don't miss. I never want to find you in my sights."
"It's not that simple," Tobias shot back, feeling a need for justification.
Bucky shrugged. "No, but the barons are running out of time, and that means we won't have many more chances to talk before everything falls apart. ~ Emma Jane Holloway
Story People quotes by Emma Jane Holloway
Also, even if technocrats provide reasonable estimates of a risk, which itself is an iffy enterprise, they cannot dictate what level of risk people ought to accept. People might object to a nuclear power plant that has a minuscule risk of a meltdown not because they overestimate the risk, but because they feel that the cost of a catastrophe, no matter how remote, are too dreadful. And of course any of these trade-offs may be unacceptable if people perceive that the benefits would go to the wealthy and powerful while they themselves absorb the risks. Nonetheless, understanding the difference between our best science and our ancient ways of thinking can only make our individual and collective decisions better informed. It can help scientists and journalists explain a new technology in the face of the most common misunderstandings. And it can help all of us understand the technology so that we can accept or reject it on grounds that we can justify to ourselves and to others. ~ Steven Pinker
Story People quotes by Steven Pinker
If you've ever fantasized about a kinky MFF encounter with a dominant alpha male, getting handcuffed to a bed, or being hired as a call girl, this is the story for you. ~ Anya Aurelie
Story People quotes by Anya Aurelie
It is absolutely necessary that we live a righteous and a Godly life and be an example of a virtuous man to other people. Our authority and power in the spirit realm will be unlimited if we will fully put ourselves under the laws of God. ~ Sunday Adelaja
Story People quotes by Sunday Adelaja
Every person who you have known in your life, has left their fingerprints on your heart, and your soul. Some leave bigger fingerprints than others. Never take these people for granted, because when they're gone, it's only those fingerprints that remain. ~ Vikki Shelton
Story People quotes by Vikki Shelton
The basic issue of an American society which is fair, which is providing opportunity for all, is nowadays being replaced by the correct perception that we're living in a rigged economy - where it doesn't matter how hard you worked, the result will be all the income goes to the people at the very top. It's leading to a lot of frustration and anger, and people want some fundamental changes to the way we do economics and growth. ~ Bernie Sanders
Story People quotes by Bernie Sanders
The only people I am aware of who don't have troubles are gathered in peaceful, little neighborhoods. There is never a care, never a moment of stress and never an obstacle to ruin a day. All is calm. All is serene. Most towns have at least one such worry-free zone. We call them cemeteries. ~ Steve Goodier
Story People quotes by Steve Goodier
Even though I had the talent, programming just didn't feel right. I never considered it very seriously. Some people get gratification from bending a machine to their will. I didn't. ~ Mitch Kapor
Story People quotes by Mitch Kapor
OUR SUCCESS IN THIS MORTAL WORLD IS JUDGED BY HOW MANY PEOPLE WE HAVE FOOLED EACH DAY. ~ Kunal Narayan Uniyal
Story People quotes by Kunal Narayan Uniyal
Men, to act with vigour and effect, must have time to mature measures, and judgment and experience, as to the best method of applying them. They must not be hurried on to their conclusions by the passions, or the fears of the multitude. They must deliberate, as well as resolve. ~ Joseph Story
Story People quotes by Joseph Story
Which is how most people acted when it came to temptation. They gave in. And we should never forget, thought Isabel, that every one of us is capable of doing the same thing if the game that we see for ourselves is large enough. ~ Alexander McCall Smith
Story People quotes by Alexander McCall Smith
Posing as someone, or something, else is the story of many women and men who have experienced repression and made a bid for freedom. It is the story of a gay U.S. Marine who had to pretend he was straight. It is the story of a Jewish family in Nazi Germany posing as Protestants. It is the story of a black South African who tried to make his skin lighter under apartheid. ~ Jenny Nordberg
Story People quotes by Jenny Nordberg
That's the problem with people who are not human. You can't tell how badly they're hurt, or how much they need your help, and until you ask, they don't always know how to tell you. ~ Jeff VanderMeer
Story People quotes by Jeff VanderMeer
People in pain can be very self-destructive. And sometimes they pull in the people who are close to them, often without realizing. ~ Sara Barnard
Story People quotes by Sara Barnard
Love makes people irrational, so write irrationally great characters in love. ~ Erik Christian
Story People quotes by Erik Christian
People are sad. People are broke. People are worried about money, people are worried that they're not enough and not amounting to anything and they don't feel good about themselves. People have rough times, and everybody's pretending it's not true, and we need to break that veneer. ~ Eve Ensler
Story People quotes by Eve Ensler
Grace abounds in contemporary movies, books, novels, films and music. If God is not in the whirlwind, He may be in a Woody Allen film, or a Bruce Springsteen concert. Most people understand imagery and symbol better than doctrine and dogma. Images touch hearts and awaken imaginations. One theologian suggested that Springsteen's 'Tunnel of Love' album, in which he symbolically sings of sin, death, despair and redemption, is more important for Catholics than the Pope's last visit when he spoke of morality only in doctrinal propositions. ~ Brennan Manning
Story People quotes by Brennan Manning
If you care about the people you work with then you work harder ~ Kristine Lilly
Story People quotes by Kristine Lilly
Teach her to reject likeability. Her job is not to make herself likeable, her job is to be her full self, a self that is honest and aware of the equal humanity of other people. ~ Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Story People quotes by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
why are so many people fighting so hard to do it? I had even convinced myself that it wasn't a big ~ La La Anthony
Story People quotes by La La Anthony
We are constantly being put to the test by trying circumstances and difficult people and problems not necessarily of our own making. ~ Terry Brooks
Story People quotes by Terry Brooks
But the best stories were about their mother, how her hair was as red as blood, how she had seventy-four freckles on her face, how she was a ferryboat captain's daughter who believed that people could fly. ~ Alice Hoffman
Story People quotes by Alice Hoffman
.... romance is so much bigger than just a love story. Romance has to do with making things lovely because of love. Romance means absorbing the beauty of life, conversation, atmosphere, places, and surroundings. It means increasing our awareness of the fragrance of pine trees, freshly ground coffee, and sheets drying on the line; hearing the music of waves, children's laughter, and he rain drumming on the roof: seeing the signature of God on His creation. It means drinking the gift of life to the dregs. All to be enjoyed, all to be taken in." p. 17 ~ Dee Brestin
Story People quotes by Dee Brestin
Good people are found, not changed. ~ Jim Rohn
Story People quotes by Jim Rohn
Parents can fail to cheer your successes as wildly as you expected, pointing out that you are sharing your Nobel Prize with a couple of other people, or that your Oscar was for supporting actress, not really for a starring role. More subtly, they can cheer your successes too wildly, forcing you into the awkward realization that your achievement of merely graduating or getting the promotion did not warrant the fireworks and brass band. ~ Frank Pittman
Story People quotes by Frank Pittman
My work about corruption is to get people to see it less as a moral issue (right/wrong) and more as an economic issue (economies of influence and their effect). ~ Lawrence Lessig
Story People quotes by Lawrence Lessig
Order of events had lately come to the English Crown and People, from a congress of British subjects in America: which, strange to relate, have proved more important to the human race than any communications yet received through any of the chickens of the Cock-lane brood. ~ Charles Dickens
Story People quotes by Charles Dickens
Whenever people ask me, "How are your books doing?" or, "How is your book doing?" I just say, "It's okay." I mean, what am I supposed to say? I'm a writer; that means I write because I need to write, because that's how I breathe and that's how I bleed. I'm not an author; I'm a writer. Even when I don't want to write; I can't stop! So, how are my books doing? The hell I know! The moment after I publish one book, I'm writing another one! I don't know how my books are doing! I just know that I'm writing them! I'm a writer, I'm a writer. I'm not an author. ~ C. JoyBell C.
