All my life I've been involved with racial politics. I was a Freedom Rider in the South. I was the author of books on gang violence, I was a community organizer in Newark, New Jersey, and when I spoke to the Black Caucus, congressional and state, I realized they were going all the way for Hillary [Clinton] and so was the Latino caucus in Sacramento and I asked myself this question: "Do I really want to cast my vote against these people who have been central to my life and to the soul of the country?" And so I went with them. Period. ~ Tom Hayden
Gang Violence quotes by Tom Hayden
I have sat with the mothers who have lost addicted sons. I have sat with families of kids who have been killed in drug-related gang violence. I have been to the prisons. I have seen the effects. At some point in time, I felt I had to do something other than write a novel about it, that I needed to try to make some sort of contribution, at least try to make some sort of difference in the real world. ~ Don Winslow
Gang Violence quotes by Don Winslow
Don't Shoot is a work of moral philosophy that reads like a crime novel - Immanuel Kant meets Joseph Wambaugh. It's a fascinating, inspiring, and wonderfully well written story of one man's quest to solve a problem no one thought could be solved: the scourge of inner city gang violence This is a vitally important work that has the potential to usher in a new era in policing. ~ John Seabrook
Gang Violence quotes by John Seabrook
Increasingly gang violence and organized crime, together with climate change-driven natural disasters, are displacing more people as wars are fewer on the continent and political violence has decreased considerably, the NRC has decided to treat this as a humanitarian crisis. ~ Jan Egeland
Gang Violence quotes by Jan Egeland
I personally don't enjoy films that bring black people down. I find that a majority of the films that black people are starred in nowadays, are ones focused on gang violence or dancing. ~ Drake
Gang Violence quotes by Drake
Gang violence in America is not a sudden problem. It has been a part of urban life for years, offering an aggressive definition and identity to those seeking a place to belong in the chaos of large metropolitan areas. ~ Dave Reichert
Gang Violence quotes by Dave Reichert
Fitchett smiled to himself. He loved this bit, when it's about to kick off. Half terror, half ecstasy. The adrenaline surging through him like an electric current. His breathing coming in short gasps and his stomach trying to push its way up through his throat. 'The Buzz' they called it. And they were right. Fitchett was buzzing, this was what it was all about for him. This blast of magic. ~ Dougie Brimson
Gang Violence quotes by Dougie Brimson
We Die Young is about gang violence. That was something that was happening in Seattle, something that kinda opened our eyes. It just seemed like things were getting out of hand. Incidents where kids were getting shot, and getting their tennis shoes ripped off their dead bodies. It just seems like these kids are dying at younger and younger ages and getting involved in gang activity. ~ Layne Staley
Gang Violence quotes by Layne Staley
I had seen so many injustices done in the court by well-meaning people. I had lost fourteen clients to gang violence in only seven years. I was angry at a system I thought had failed my clients, and I was part of it. ~ Richard Helms
Gang Violence quotes by Richard Helms
I grew up in Los Angeles when the racial tensions between blacks and Mexicans were very high. Gang violence was very prevalent. ~ Miguel
Gang Violence quotes by Miguel
Dig down into the blood depths of hormonal bedrock, where violence and sex and power grow fibrously entwined. It's a murky, complicated place down there. No telling what you'll drag up once you start excavating. ~ Richard K. Morgan
Gang Violence quotes by Richard K. Morgan
Martin Scorcese is probably America's greatest living director, and while he is not a titan like John Ford or Alfred Hitchcock or Federico Fellini, he is certainly consistently more interesting than Steven Spielberg, Brian de Palma, Francis Ford Coppola or Woody Allen. Even a failure like Gangs of New York or a curiosity like The Aviator is more interesting and ambitious than Munich, The Black Dahlia or Scoop. ~ Joe Queenan
Gang Violence quotes by Joe Queenan
Which do you prefer, she says. Sex or Violence?
I try to smile. What's the difference, really. ~ Will Christopher Baer
Gang Violence quotes by Will Christopher Baer
I never understood rape until it happened to me. It was a concept- of savagery, of violence, of disrespect. I had read my share of Kate Millet and Susan Brownmiller but nothing prepared me for how to handle it. Within a marriage, fighting back has consequences. The man who rapes me is not a stranger who runs away. The man who rapes me is not the silhouette in the car park, he is not the masked assaulter, he is not the acquaintance who has spiked my drinks. He is someone who wakes up next to me. He is the husband for whom I make coffee the following morning. He is the husband who can shrug it away and tell me to stop imagining things. He is the husband who can blame his action on unbridled passion the next day, while I hobble from room to room.
I begin to learn that there are no screams that are loud enough to make my husband stop. There are no scream that cannot be silenced by the shock of a tight slap. There is no organic defence that can protect against penetration. He covers himself with enough lubricant to slide part my resistance. My legs go limp. I come apart. ~ Meena Kandasamy
Gang Violence quotes by Meena Kandasamy
The Jihad is not just a way of testing yourself but also means using violence to spread Islam. ~ Bassam Tibi
Gang Violence quotes by Bassam Tibi
In this image-driven age, wildlife filmmakers carry a heavy responsibility. They can influence how we think and behave when we're in nature. They can even influence how we raise our kids, how we vote and volunteer in our communities, as well as the future of our wildlands and wildlife. If the stories they create are misleading or false in some way, viewers will misunderstand the issues and react in inappropriate ways. People who consume a heavy diet of wildlife films filled with staged violence and aggression, for example, are likely to think about nature as a circus or a freak show. They certainly won't form the same positive connections to the natural world as people who watch more thoughtful, authentic, and conservation-oriented films. ~ Chris Palmer
Gang Violence quotes by Chris Palmer
I do not know what put the idea of China into his head, but at first he must have thrust it aside with violent repulsion; and perhaps the very violence of his repulsion impressed the idea on him, for he found it haunting him. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
Gang Violence quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
We have learned that violence as a means is always unsuccessful ~ Russell Brand
Gang Violence quotes by Russell Brand
This was the part she liked the last, the anticipation before the release of violence. Duringa fight nothing mattered but the fight itself, now she had to strugglw to keep her mind on the task at hand ~ Cassandra Clare
Gang Violence quotes by Cassandra Clare
The part of her that should have been disgusted was numb. ~ Fuyumi Ono
Gang Violence quotes by Fuyumi Ono
I'm not a pacifist. I think the suffering of innocent people can be a catalyst for moral action. But empathy puts too much weight on the scale in favor of war. Empathy can really lead to violence. ~ Paul Bloom
Gang Violence quotes by Paul Bloom
War doesn't start with violence, it starts with misunderstanding and prejudice. If you say you're in favour of a world full of peace, you have to try to understand why others think and act the way they do. You have to accept that not everyone sees the world the way you do. You can't just believe that everyone has the answers to what is right and wrong. ~ Sana Bukkoush, SKAM
Gang Violence quotes by Sana Bukkoush, SKAM
To his inner ear, the cardinal speaks. He says, I saw you, Crumb, when you were at Elvetham: scratching your balls in the dawn and wondering at the violence of the king's whims. If he wants a new wife, fix him one. I didn't, and I am dead. ~ Hilary Mantel
Gang Violence quotes by Hilary Mantel
My work is less violent because we tend to write what we want to read ... and I'm not that interested in gruesome books. Any violence, to fit in well with a crime novel, has to have compassion. ~ Ann Cleeves
Gang Violence quotes by Ann Cleeves
I imagine if you had built the Newton Memorial outside Paris ... it would have undoubtedly shown the violence of 1870 and 1914 and 1942 and 1945 - even 1968! Consider building a vast cube of stone merely to register the effects of violence - marked and dated as an indictment. ~ Peter Greenaway
Gang Violence quotes by Peter Greenaway
The ideally non-violent state will be an ordered anarchy. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Gang Violence quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
In the basement, with Ruth, I began to learn that anger, hate, fear and loneliness are all one button awaiting the touch of just a single finger to set them blazing toward destruction. ~ Jack Ketchum
Gang Violence quotes by Jack Ketchum
Unlike some mainland black groups, Tasmanian Aborigines now have no traditional tribal culture left. It was taken from them with great violence and great rapidity. ~ Richard Flanagan
Gang Violence quotes by Richard Flanagan
We are shocked by thieves taking pride in their clever touch, prostitutes in their depravity and murderers in their callousness. But it is shocking only because the atmosphere of the circles they move in is restricted, and - what matters most - we are on the outside. But isn't the same thing happening when rich men take pride in their wealth (which is theft), military commanders in their victories (which are murder) and rulers in their power (which is violence)? We do not see them as people who corrupt the concept of life, or good and evil, in order to justify their own situation, but only because the circles of people who share these corrupt concepts are wider, and we belong to them. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Gang Violence quotes by Leo Tolstoy
What has happened to this man that he can be so full of violence and hate? ~ Carmen Jenner
Gang Violence quotes by Carmen Jenner
Fear, she's the mother of violence. ~ Peter Gabriel
Gang Violence quotes by Peter Gabriel
It is my conviction that nothing enduring
can be built on violence.
The only safe way to overcome an enemy
is to make of that enemy a friend. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Gang Violence quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
Anger, depression, guilt, and shame are the product of the thinking that is at the base of violence on our planet. ~ Marshall B. Rosenberg
Gang Violence quotes by Marshall B. Rosenberg
The chief evil of war is more evil. War is the concentration of all human crimes. Here is its distinguishing, accursed brand. Under its standard gather violence, malignity, rage, fraud, perfidy, rapacity, and lust. If it only slew man, it would do little. It turns man into a beast of prey. ~ William Ellery Channing
Gang Violence quotes by William Ellery Channing
Violence is the divine force that everyone tries to use for his own purposes and that ends by using everyone for its own - the Dionysus of The Bacchae ~ Rene Girard
Gang Violence quotes by Rene Girard
Unfortunately, the greater the humanitarian outreach, the greater the violence required to achieve it. ~ Ron Paul
Gang Violence quotes by Ron Paul
We have not touched the stars,
nor are we forgiven, which brings us back
to the hero's shoulders and the gentleness that comes,
not from the absence of violence, but despite
the abundance of it. ~ Richard Siken
Gang Violence quotes by Richard Siken
JULIAN HUXLEY'S "EUGENICS MANIFESTO":
"Eugenics Manifesto" was the name given to an article supporting eugenics. The document, which appeared in Nature, September 16, 1939, was a joint statement issued by America's and Britain's most prominent biologists, and was widely referred to as the "Eugenics Manifesto." The manifesto was a response to a request from Science Service, of Washington, D.C. for a reply to the question "How could the world's population be improved most effectively genetically?" Two of the main signatories and authors were Hermann J. Muller and Julian Huxley. Julian Huxley, as this book documents, was the founding director of UNESCO from the famous Huxley family. Muller was an American geneticist, educator and Nobel laureate best known for his work on the physiological and genetic effects of radiation. Put into the context of the timeline, this document was published 15 years after "Mein Kampf" and a year after the highly publicized violence of Kristallnacht. In other words, there is no way either Muller or Huxley were unaware at the moment of publication of the historical implications of eugenic agendas. ~ A.E. Samaan
Gang Violence quotes by A.E. Samaan
You say you love your wife. You depend on her; she has given you her body, her emotions, her encouragement, a certain feeling of security and well-being. Then she turns away from you; she gets bored or goes off with someone else, and your whole emotional balance is destroyed, and this disturbance, which you don't like, is called jealousy. There is pain in it, anxiety, hate and violence. So what you are really saying is, 'As long as you belong to me I love you but the moment you don't I begin to hate you. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
Gang Violence quotes by Jiddu Krishnamurti
Its aura distorts hard edges. Shimmering vortices of discoloration boil off, swirling, licking the
cold night air with bright spectral fire. Violence and death, this one's still hot. ~ Michael Allan Scott
Gang Violence quotes by Michael Allan Scott
We're going to build the bridge to the 21st century, we have to make our children free - free of the vise grip of guns and gangs and drugs; free to build lives of hope. ~ William J. Clinton
Gang Violence quotes by William J. Clinton
I think I just said it, but I think it's worth repeating. They gave me hope that there is good in the world out there. There really is. It really does exist. Regardless of how bad things can be, and how down on your luck you can be, or how bad your trust is broken when it comes to warming up to people and all that stuff, I know that there's people out there that genuinely wanna help. Putting yourself in that position is a huge step, and it's a very risky and fragile step, but it's also a step that needs to be taken because there is help. And you can get through something like this. You really can. - Jim, from To the Survivors ~ Robert Uttaro
Gang Violence quotes by Robert Uttaro
B Y AND BY, WHEN WE GOT UP, WE TURNED OVER THE TRUCK THE GANG had stole off of the wreck, and found boots, and blankets, and clothes, and all sorts of other things, and a lot of books, and a spyglass, and three boxes of seegars. ~ Mark Twain
Gang Violence quotes by Mark Twain
That even an apocalypse can be made to seem part of the ordinary horizon of expectation constitutes an unparalleled violence that is being done to our sense of reality, to our humanity. ~ Susan Sontag
