When I was running the marathons in Munich, I always trained by myself. Between the demands of graduate work and a young family, I had to train at unusual hours. A few times, I ran home from my lab late at night, which was 20 kilometers out of town. ~ Wolfgang Ketterle
Munich quotes by Wolfgang Ketterle
I ought to have seized the initiative in 1938 instead of allowing myself to be forced into war in 1939; for war was, in any case, unavoidable. However, you can hardly blame me if the British and the French accepted at Munich every demand I made of them! (14th February 1945) ~ Adolf Hitler
Munich quotes by Adolf Hitler
Late in February, she stood on Munich Street and watched a single giant cloud come over the hills like a white monster. It climbed the mountains. The sun was eclipsed, and in its place, a white beast with a gray heart watched the town. ~ Markus Zusak
Munich quotes by Markus Zusak
The rest of the Spice Girls wanted to invite the entire Bayern Munich team because they reckoned they'd never known blokes to be on top for 90 minutes and still come second. ~ Gary Neville
Munich quotes by Gary Neville
The untutored egotist merely wants what he wants. Give him a religious education, and it becomes obvious to him, it becomes axiomatic, that what he wants is what God wants, that his cause is the cause of whatever he may happen to regard as the True Church and that any compromise is a metaphysical Munich, an appeasement of Radical Evil. ~ Aldous Huxley
Munich quotes by Aldous Huxley
This preternatural love of rules almost for their own sake punctuates German finance as it does German life. As it happens, a story had just broken that a German reinsurance company called Munich Re, back in June 2007, or just before the crash, had sponsored a party for its best producers that offered not just chicken dinners and nearest-to-the-pin golf competitions but a blowout with prostitutes in a public bath. In finance, high or low, this sort of thing is of course not unusual. What was striking was how organized the German event was. The company tied white and yellow and red ribbons to the prostitutes to indicate which ones were available to which men. After each sexual encounter the prostitute received a stamp on her arm to indicate how often she had been used. The Germans didn't just want hookers: they wanted hookers with rules. ~ Michael Lewis
Munich quotes by Michael Lewis
For Reagan, for his contemporaries, and many in the generations after them, the word Munich was understood as code for any nation's stepping back from necessary toughness ~ Chris Matthews
Munich quotes by Chris Matthews
We are Bayern Munich and English teams always have trouble as soon as they leave the island. ~ Oliver Kahn
Munich quotes by Oliver Kahn
A club like Bayern Munich, which shuns debt, is in fact missing a trick. Bayern could easily borrow a few hundred million dollars to make itself invincible against human opposition on the long term. ~ Simon Kuper
Munich quotes by Simon Kuper
They thought of home, naturally, but there was no burning desire to be in civilization for its own sake. Worsley recorded: "Waking on a fine morning I feel a great longing for the smell of dewy wet grass and flowers of a Spring morning in New Zealand or England. One has very few other longings for civilization - good bread and butter, Munich beer, Coromandel rock oysters, apple pie and Devonshire cream are pleasant reminiscences rather than longings. ~ Alfred Lansing
Munich quotes by Alfred Lansing
I also work with the regular orchestras in Munich, Germany and other similar orchestras. ~ Skitch Henderson
Munich quotes by Skitch Henderson
I liked Germany; I'm not into Berlin, it's too huge and empty and imposing, but Munich was good. ~ Graham Coxon
Munich quotes by Graham Coxon
Under the ground, in Munich, Germany, two people stood and spoke in a basement. It sounds like the beginning of a joke:

'There's a Jew and a German standing in a basement, right?...'

This, however, was no joke. ~ Markus Zusak
Munich quotes by Markus Zusak
In the spring of 1854, some of my publications persuaded King Maximilian II of Bavaria to offer me, at the suggestion of Emanuel Geibel, a position in Munich with an annual salary of 1000 guilders, to take part in his so-called symposia, weekly soirees at which scholars and poets were gathered. ~ Paul Heyse
Munich quotes by Paul Heyse
The Arab who built himself a hut with marbles from the temple of Palmyra is more philosophical than all the curators of the museums of London, Paris, and Munich. ~ Anatole France
Munich quotes by Anatole France
Worse than Munich with worse than Chamberlain! ~ Peter Paret
Munich quotes by Peter Paret
The Greatest" is a bite-your-tongue-book. Ultimately a tragic tale it is also immensely uplifting and easily the best footballer biography I have ever read. ~ Mike Parry
Munich quotes by Mike Parry
Of one thing there is no doubt: if Paris makes demands of the heart, then Munich makes demands of the stomach. ~ Rachel Johnson
Munich quotes by Rachel Johnson
The people on the streets just say 'hi' and let me walk on. They take relatively few photos, and those that do are tourists. Munich natives are relatively relaxed. They pretty much leave me in peace and I think that's very good. The Bavarian mentality fits very well to me. ~ Manuel Neuer
Munich quotes by Manuel Neuer
All Germany was in turmoil. Revolutionaries seized power in the cities of Munich, Hanover and Cologne. One regional German government after another was toppled by workers' and soldiers' councils. Adolf Hitler, recuperating in a military hospital, reacted violently to this news. "It became impossible for me to sit still one minute more," he wrote in Mein Kampf. ~ James Cross Giblin
Munich quotes by James Cross Giblin
A fact regarding Max Vandenburg
He would search the faces on Munich street for a book-thieving girl. ~ Markus Zusak
Munich quotes by Markus Zusak
The subject matter is very tricky. It's about the Munich massacre and what Mossad did afterwards with the assassination squads. I think it's a turning point in history, especially for the Palestinians. ~ Daniel Craig
Munich quotes by Daniel Craig
My stay in Munich was the scene of my complete liberation. ~ Marcel Duchamp
Munich quotes by Marcel Duchamp
Of course the Munich tragedy was the biggest event in my career and the most terrible. ~ Jim McKay
Munich quotes by Jim McKay
Manchester United? That's not an option. I am staying at Bayern Munich. Period. I had a great time under Van Gaal at Bayern, he has been very important for my career but I am very happy at my current club. ~ Arjen Robben
Munich quotes by Arjen Robben
Chamberlain's stubborn, fanatical insistence on giving Hitler what he wanted, his trips to Berchtesgaden and Godesberg and finally the fateful journey to Munich rescued Hitler from his limb and strengthened his position in Europe, in Germany, in the Army, beyond anything that could have been imagined a few weeks before. It also added immeasurably to the power of the Third Reich. ~ William L. Shirer
Munich quotes by William L. Shirer
WHO'S GOT A TAMPON? I JUST GOT MY PERIOD, I will announce loudly to nobody in particular in a women's bathroom in a San Francisco restaurant, or to a co-ed dressing room of a music festival in Prague, or to the unsuspecting gatherers in a kitchen at a party in Sydney, Munich, or Cincinnati. Invariably, across the world, I have seen and heard the rustling of female hands through backpacks and purses, until the triumphant moment when a stranger fishes one out with a kind smile. No money is ever exchanged. The unspoken universal understanding is: Today, it is my turn to take the tampon. Tomorrow, it shall be yours. There is a constant, karmic tampon circle. It also exists, I've found, with Kleenex, cigarettes, and ballpoint pens. ~ Amanda Palmer
Munich quotes by Amanda Palmer
I would wish you gods speed but I don't want you to waste time looking for him. ~ Steve Merrick
Munich quotes by Steve Merrick
As Israel prepares to enter, my position is well known. It is one that I have taken at previous Olympics. It is wrong that the IOC refuses to have a minute's silence for Israeli athletes that were slaughtered in Munich. ~ Brian Williams
Munich quotes by Brian Williams
In Munich, Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, a rare European NATO leader who has a clear picture of events, told Merkel that the choice was "surrender or arm Ukraine" - to no effect. ~ Anonymous
Munich quotes by Anonymous
Giving in to the forces of low ambition would be an act of climate appeasement. This is our Munich moment. ~ Chris Huhne
Munich quotes by Chris Huhne
Naturally, it is a terrible, despicable crime when, as in Munich, people are taken hostage, people are killed. But probing the motives of those responsible and showing that they are also individuals with families and have their own story does not excuse what they did. ~ Steven Spielberg
Munich quotes by Steven Spielberg
Be yourself, you will not get a second chance to.
- Daniel, Age 12, Munich, Germany, October 14 ~ R.J. Palacio
Munich quotes by R.J. Palacio
A drunken but exceedingly depressed German clown from Munich entertained the public. ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Munich quotes by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Today we reject the notion of equality between a regime that belongs to the democratic world - even if it is conservative and disagreeable - and a totalitarian dictatorship, whether its colors are black, red, or green. This is why we will never again say that Chamberlain is no better than Hitler, Roosevelt no better than Stalin, and Nixon no better than Mao Zedong, even if we do condemn Roosevelt for Yalta, Chamberlain for Munich, and Nixon for Watergate. ~ Adam Michnik
Munich quotes by Adam Michnik
On the little money I had collected I lived in Berlin very cheaply, ate very cheaply. And already in 1920 I saved the first salaries I received to go to Munich. ~ Josef Albers
Munich quotes by Josef Albers
Herr Thiessen is always pleased when the circus arrives in his native Germany, but this time he is particularly delighted that it has arrived quite near Munich, so there is no need for him to secure rooms in another city. Also, ~ Erin Morgenstern
Munich quotes by Erin Morgenstern
There are three orchestras in Munich, all world-quality, in a city of one million. Yet every hall is full. ~ Zubin Mehta
Munich quotes by Zubin Mehta
Lederhosen Maker Opens First U.S. Store in Cincinnati By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Wiesnkoenig (pronounced VEE-sehn-koh-neg), the official supplier of lederhosen for the Munich Oktoberfest, opened its first store in the United States on Wednesday, in a brewery in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. Oliver Pfund, a Wiesnkoenig consultant, said, "We want to show people here in the U.S. you can wear the lederhosen with Chuck Taylors, you don't have to wear the suspenders." Founded in 2007, Wiesnkoenig has five stores in Germany and sells in department stores there and in Switzerland and Austria. Mr. Pfund said a brewery was a perfect location. He said the company hoped visitors to the brewery would "have an interest in the German culture, as well. ~ Anonymous

When I came back from Munich, it was September, and I was Professor of Mathematics at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Later I learned that I had been the Department's third choice, after two numerical analysts had turned the invitation down; the decision to invite me had not been an easy one, on the one hand because I had not really studied mathematics, and on the other hand because of my sandals, my beard and my "arrogance" (whatever that may be). ~ Edsger Dijkstra
Munich quotes by Edsger Dijkstra
Every civilization finds it necessary to negotiate compromises with its own values. ~ Golda Meir
Munich quotes by Golda Meir
When I began my physical studies [in Munich in 1874] and sought advice from my venerable teacher Philipp von Jolly ... he portrayed to me physics as a highly developed, almost fully matured science ... Possibly in one or another nook there would perhaps be a dust particle or a small bubble to be examined and classified, but the system as a whole stood there fairly secured, and theoretical physics approached visibly that degree of perfection which, for example, geometry has had already for centuries. ~ Max Planck
Munich quotes by Max Planck
Nothing in the next-door world of Dachau impinged on the great winter cycle of Beethoven chamber music played in Munich. No canvases came off museum walls as the butchers strolled reverently past, guide-books in hand. ~ George Steiner
Munich quotes by George Steiner
After the first exams, I switched to the Faculty of Philosophy and studied Zoology in Munich and Vienna. ~ Karl Von Frisch
Munich quotes by Karl Von Frisch
At this point, I couldn't help it. I walked around to see her better, and from the moment I witnessed her face again, I could tell that this was who she loved the most. Her expression stroked the man on his face. It followed one of the lines down his cheek. He had sat in the washroom with her and taught her how to roll a cigarette. He gave bread to a dead man on Munich Street and told the girl to keep reading in the bomb shelter. Perhaps if he didn't, she might not have ended up writing in the basement. Papa - the accordionist - and Himmel Street. One could not exist without the other, because for Liesel, both were home. Yes, that's what Hans Hubermann was for Liesel Meminger. ~ Markus Zusak
Munich quotes by Markus Zusak
We are known as one of the few truly antifascist families in Munich. ~ Karl Amadeus Hartmann
Munich quotes by Karl Amadeus Hartmann
I let myself go. I thought little of the houses and trees, but applied colour stripes and spots to the canvas ... Within me sounded the memory of early evening in Moscow - before my eyes was the strong, colour-saturated scale of the Munich light and atmosphere, which thundered deeply in the shadows. ~ Wassily Kandinsky
Munich quotes by Wassily Kandinsky
When I first raised the issue of the so-called Islamic State at the Munich Security Conference in February, speaking about its economy, its flexibility and pathology, people thought I was trying to scare them. But now we have experienced just that. If al-Qaida was version 2.0 of terror, then the Islamic State is version 5.0. ~ Ashraf Ghani
Munich quotes by Ashraf Ghani
There was an exhibition in Munich in 1937, 'Degenerate Art,' which included work by Klee, Kandinsky, Beckmann and many others. The work was called 'sick' and put in the trash heap. The sentiments expressed toward contemporary art by Jesse Helms, Pat Robertson and Mayor Giuliani recall the language used by the Nazis. ~ Hans Haacke
Munich quotes by Hans Haacke
those who attended the lecture course supported my views. The consequence of it all was that, a few days later, I was assigned to a regiment then stationed at Munich and given a position there as 'instruction officer.' At that time the spirit of discipline was rather weak-among those troops. It ~ Adolf Hitler
Munich quotes by Adolf Hitler
Liverpool are one of the dynasties of the game. They have won five European Cups and their status is up there with AC Milan, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. ~ Brendan
Munich quotes by Brendan
At one stopover on the train journey home, Hans told his sister Inge later, he saw a young girl with the Star of David on her breast; she was repairing tracks on the line, along with other people with yellow badges on their clothes. Her face was pallid, sunken in; her eyes, beyond grief and terror. Impulsively, Hans thrust his rations in her hand. She looked up at him, then at his uniform. She threw the packet of food to the ground.
He scooped it up, wiped off the dust, and picked a daisy growing by the side of the tracks. He placed the package, with the daisy on top, at her feet. He said, "I would have liked to give you a little pleasure." He boarded the train.
When he looked back, the girl was standing there, watching the train disappear, the flower in her hair. ~ Jud Newborn
Munich quotes by Jud Newborn
Our enemies are small worms,' he told his generals. 'I saw them in Munich. ~ Ian Kershaw
Munich quotes by Ian Kershaw
But first Hitler, taken in by Mussolini's mythmaking, attempted a "march" of his own. On November 8, 1923, during a nationalist rally in a Munich beer hall, the Bürgerbräukeller, Hitler attempted to kidnap the leaders of the Bavarian government and force them to support a coup d'état against the federal government in Berlin. He believed that if he took control of Munich and declared a new national government, the Bavarian civil and military leaders would be forced by public opinion to support him. He was equally convinced that the local army authorities would not oppose the Nazi coup because the World War I hero General Ludendorff was marching beside him.

Hitler underestimated military fidelity to the chain of command. The conservative Bavarian minister-president Gustav von Kahr gave orders to stop Hitler's coup, by force if necessary. The police fired on the Nazi marchers on November 9 as they approached a major square (possibly returning a first shot from Hitler's side). Fourteen putschists and four policemen were killed. Hitler was arrested and imprisoned,8 along with other Nazis and their sympathizers. The august General Ludendorff was released on his own recognizance. Hitler's "Beer Hall Putsch" was thus put down so ignominiously by the conservative rulers of Bavaria that he resolved never again to try to gain power through force. That meant remaining at least superficially within constitutional legality, though the Nazis never gave up the selective violence t ~ Robert O. Paxton
Munich quotes by Robert O. Paxton
Their eyes met; neither would forget. ~ Jud Newborn
Munich quotes by Jud Newborn
Martin Scorcese is probably America's greatest living director, and while he is not a titan like John Ford or Alfred Hitchcock or Federico Fellini, he is certainly consistently more interesting than Steven Spielberg, Brian de Palma, Francis Ford Coppola or Woody Allen. Even a failure like Gangs of New York or a curiosity like The Aviator is more interesting and ambitious than Munich, The Black Dahlia or Scoop. ~ Joe Queenan
Munich quotes by Joe Queenan
It was only natural that the intellectuals who questioned the necessity of American purpose did not rush from Cambridge and New Haven to inflict their doubts about American power and goals upon the nation's policies. So people like Riesman, classic intellectuals, stayed where they were while the new breed of thinkers-doers, half of academe, half of the nation's think tanks and of policy planning, would make the trip, not doubting for a moment the validity of their right to serve, the quality of their experience. They were men who reflected the post-Munich, post-McCarthy pragmatism of the age. One had to stop totalitarianism, and since the only thing the totalitarians understood was force, one had to be willing to use force. They justified each decision to use power by their own conviction that the Communists were worse, which justified our dirty tricks, our toughness. ~ David Halberstam
