Life isn't in our brain // It flows through our veins.
Just a little cut to drain out the galaxies that keep me up tonight.
Just a little cut and all this goes away. Just a little cut and no more thoughts. No memories. No pain. I mean screw nostalgia.
I don't want it. Take it back! ~ Sijdah Hussain
Sleeplessness quotes by Sijdah Hussain
Parker Haas, crying Omaha, and his sleepless Rose. ~ Charlie Huston
Sleeplessness quotes by Charlie Huston
I was so sleep deprived that I could barely see straight as we walked into the soundless dark. I tried to get the boy to speak to me but he just continued walking forward without muttering a word. ~ Trisha North
Sleeplessness quotes by Trisha North
Dark circles under my eyes sink deeper and deeper into my skull, in contrast to my pale skin there is an undeniable resemblance to a fresh corpse. ~ Dee Remy
Sleeplessness quotes by Dee Remy
Any drinker knows how the process works: the first day you get drunk is okay, the morning after means a big head but so you can kill that easy with a few more drinks and a meal, but if you pass up the meal and go on to another night's drunk, and wake up to keep the toot going, and continue on to the fourth day, there'll come one day when the drinks wont take effect because you're chemically overloaded and you'll have to sleep it off but cant sleep any more because it was alcohol itself that made you sleep those last five nights, so delirium sets in ― Sleeplessness, sweat, trembling, a groaning feeling of weakness where your arms are numb and useless, nightmares, (nightmares of death)... well, there's more of that up later. ~ Jack Kerouac
Sleeplessness quotes by Jack Kerouac
I was asleep but my mind was awake. Now, I'm awake, but my mind is still asleep. ~ Mwanandeke Kindembo
Sleeplessness quotes by Mwanandeke Kindembo
Don't buy society's definition of success. Because it's not working for anyone. It's not working for women, it's not working for men, it's not working for polar bears, it's not working for the cicadas that are apparently about to emerge and swarm us. It's only truly working for those who make pharmaceuticals for stress, diabetes, heart disease, sleeplessness, and high blood pressure. ~ Arianna Huffington
Sleeplessness quotes by Arianna Huffington
Every torment they had experienced was returned to them an intoxication. It seemed to them that the griefs , the sleeplessness, the tears, the anguish, the dismay, the despair, became caresses and radiance ... and that their sorrows were so many servants preparing their joy. To have suffered, how good it is! Their grief made a halo around their happiness. ~ Victor Hugo
Sleeplessness quotes by Victor Hugo
It's a long way back to sunset, a far way on to dawn, so you summon all the fool things of your life, the stupid lovely things done with people known so very well who are now so very dead... ~ Ray Bradbury
Sleeplessness quotes by Ray Bradbury
Think what devils chase a man who cannot sleep in his own house. ~ Warren Eyster
Sleeplessness quotes by Warren Eyster
C.S. Lewis had come to demand of his nightly prayers a "realization," "a certain vividness of the imagination and the affectations" – a sure recipe for sleeplessness and misery. ~ Philip Zaleski
Sleeplessness quotes by Philip Zaleski
I feel as though whenever I create something, my Mr. Hyde wakes up in the middle of the night and starts thrashing it. I sometimes love it the next morning, but other times it is an abomination. ~ Criss Jami
Sleeplessness quotes by Criss Jami
Do you think too long a period of nightlessness," mused Sandra, "could drive you insane, the way they say sleeplessness can? ~ Julia Glass
Sleeplessness quotes by Julia Glass
Watch over your child, as it struggles for breath on the outermost verge of life, or see your wife follow the child to that outermost verge, beside herself for anxiety and sleeplessness, - then love will teach you that life comes first. ~ Bjornstjerne Bjornson
Sleeplessness quotes by Bjornstjerne Bjornson
They met in the library searching for old Sidney Sheldon books. Her silence and calmness drew her to him. His brooding nature drew him to her. Conversations flowed like the waters of a water-fall! And every time they met their conversations sparked flames like the forest caught in a wild fire!

There was something in her eyes! Her eyes were expressive and from the first day that they met, they spoke to him a million things! He could know which night she had cried, which night she had slept peacefully and which night of hers had been spent in complete sleeplessness. He began reading her eyes more deeply and passionately than the books in the library...

And being an obsessive man, he did things normal men did not! Like he knew the number of strands of hair that her eye-lashes had! ~ Avijeet Das
Sleeplessness quotes by Avijeet Das
I needed a way out of this - the bathroom, the pills, the sleeplessness, the failed, stupid life. ~ Ottessa Moshfegh
Sleeplessness quotes by Ottessa Moshfegh
She lay down and never stirred. To move hand or foot, or even so much as one finger, would have been an exertion beyond the powers of either volition or motion. She was so tired, so stunned, that she thought she never slept at all; her feverish thoughts passed and repassed the boundary between sleeping and waking, and kept their own miserable identity. ~ Elizabeth Gaskell
Sleeplessness quotes by Elizabeth Gaskell
I always come here when I can't sleep [. . .] every night. ~ Faith Erin Hicks
Sleeplessness quotes by Faith Erin Hicks
Five a.m. and mooching round
Compartments in my brain
Every corner occupied
By garbage and disdain
Down all day - up all night
Beneath that energy draining light

The Paperboy's Wife ~ John Cooper Clarke
Sleeplessness quotes by John Cooper Clarke
It's sad to fall asleep. It separates people. Even when you're sleeping together, you're all alone. ~ J.L. Merrow
Sleeplessness quotes by J.L. Merrow
He would lie in the bed and finally, with daylight, he would go to sleep. After all, he said to himself, it is probably only insomnia. Many must have it. ~ Ernest Hemingway,
Sleeplessness quotes by Ernest Hemingway,
Hail O mighty, fathomless sleep, come on and hug me tight and sweet;
when I whisper those deepest pains, onto your ears mute and keen,
sing for me the sweetest song that would sound the profoundest of life!
Leave me upon your rocking arms, watched by spirits of placid nights!

Goodnight, world, sweet dreams folks, blessed are those who would sleep at peace! ~ Preeth Nambiar
Sleeplessness quotes by Preeth Nambiar
Care keeps his watch in every old man's eye,
And where care lodges, sleep will never lie. ~ William Shakespeare
Sleeplessness quotes by William Shakespeare
Insomnia, then, is not just a state of sleeplessness, a matter of negatives. It involves the active pursuit of sleep. It is a state of longing. ~ Marina Benjamin
Sleeplessness quotes by Marina Benjamin
The cold, and even the hunger, the watchings and sleeplessness of nights of danger, and the feeling at times of utter isolation and helplessness, were well and wisely chosen, and tenderly and lovingly meted out. What circumstances could have rendered the Word of God more sweet, the presence of God more real, the help of God more precious? ~ Hudson Taylor
Sleeplessness quotes by Hudson Taylor
It is false to believe that the scale of fears corresponds to that of the dangers which inspire them. One might be frightened of sleeplessness and yet not of a duel, of a rat and not of a lion. ~ Marcel Proust
Sleeplessness quotes by Marcel Proust
Something amazing happens when the rest of the world is sleeping. I am glued to my chair. I forget that I ever wanted to do anything but write. The crowded city, the crowded apartment, and the crowded calendar suddenly seem spacious. Three or four hours pass in a moment; I have no idea what time it is, because I never check the clock. If I chose to listen, I could hear the swish of taxis bound for downtown bars or the soft saxophone riffs that drift from a neighbor's window, but nothing gets through. I am suspended in a sensory deprivation tank, and the very lack of sensation is delicious. ~ Anne Fadiman
Sleeplessness quotes by Anne Fadiman
The capital phenomenon, the most catastrophic disaster, is uninterrupted sleeplessness, that nothingness without release. ~ Emil Cioran
Sleeplessness quotes by Emil Cioran
No amount of sleep will ever satisfy the tiredness i always feel. ~ Unknown
Sleeplessness quotes by Unknown
I began to experience, over the course of the next three months, full-blown insomnia. I'm not talking about the romantic kind, not the sweet sleeplessness one has when one is in love, anxiously awaiting the morn so one can rendezvous with a lover in an illicit gazebo. No, this was the torturous, clammy kind, when one's pillow slowly takes on the properties of a block of wood and one's sheets, the air of the Everglades. ~ Marisha Pessl
Sleeplessness quotes by Marisha Pessl
With regard to sleep and waking, we must consider what they are: whether they are peculiar to soul or to body, or common to both; and if common, to what part of soul or body the appertain: further, from what cause it arises that they are atributes of animals, and whether all animals share in them both, or some partake of the one only, others of the other only, or some partake of neither and some of both. ~ Aristotle.
Sleeplessness quotes by Aristotle.
Very often, gleams of light come in a few minutes' sleeplessness, in a second
perhaps; you must fix them. To entrust them to the relaxed brain is like writing on water; there is every chance that on the morrow there will be no slightest trace left of any happening. ~ Antonin Sertillanges
Sleeplessness quotes by Antonin Sertillanges
If only I could bottle up the drowsiness that plagued me during the day so I could use it at bedtime. - Amanda Rosenbloom ~ Stephanie Lehmann
Sleeplessness quotes by Stephanie Lehmann
Twenty-fours hours of sleeplessness had made her, in my eyes, anyway, and idealized representation of compassionate, long-suffering women of all ages everywhere. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Sleeplessness quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
Love Sorrow

Love sorrow. She is yours now, and you must
take care of what has been
given. Brush her hair, help her
into her little coat, hold her hand,
especially when crossing a street. For, think,

what if you should lose her? Then you would be
sorrow yourself; her drawn face, her sleeplessness
would be yours. Take care, touch
her forehead that she feel herself not so

utterly alone. And smile, that she does not
altogether forget the world before the lesson.
Have patience in abundance. And do not
ever lie or ever leave her even for a moment

by herself, which is to say, possibly, again,
abandoned. She is strange, mute, difficult,
sometimes unmanageable but, remember, she is a child.
And amazing things can happen. And you may see,

as the two of you go
walking together in the morning light, how
little by little she relaxes; she looks about her;
she begins to grow. ~ Mary Oliver
Sleeplessness quotes by Mary Oliver
When you've been hurt enough as a kid (maybe at any age), it's like you have a trick knee. Most of your life, you can function like an adult, but add in the right portions of sleeplessness and stress and grief, and the hurt, defeated self can bloom into place. ~ Mary Karr
Sleeplessness quotes by Mary Karr
As I drove to school, my head pounding from sleeplessness, I kept thinking about how I'd been scared of monsters as a kid. When I was little, I knew monsters weren't, like, real. But I also knew I could be hurt by things that weren't real. I knew that made-up things mattered, and could kill you. I felt like that again after reading Daisy's stories, like something invisible was coming for me. ~ John Green
Sleeplessness quotes by John Green
I would never sleep. I knew that. Not with my blood ringing in my ears, and my heart beating an angry staccato rhythm in my chest. I would never relax. ~ Ruth Ware
Sleeplessness quotes by Ruth Ware
It's not worth staying up all night just to paint masterpieces. ~ Marty Rubin
Sleeplessness quotes by Marty Rubin
Dr. Holmes came again. Large, fresh coloured, handsome, flicking his boots, looking in the glass, he brushed it all aside-headaches, sleeplessness, fears, dreams-nerve symptoms and nothing more, he said. ~ Virginia Woolf
Sleeplessness quotes by Virginia Woolf
And now I may dismiss my heroine to the sleepless couch, which is the true heroine's portion - to a pillow strewed with thorns and wet with tears. And lucky may she think herself, if she get another good night's rest in the course of the next three months. ~ Jane Austen
Sleeplessness quotes by Jane Austen
I haven't been out driving at this time of night in many years, much less in an unfamiliar area. These are the things that scare you as you get older. You understand night all too well, all its attendant meanings. You try to avoid it, work around it, keep it from entering your house. Your weary, ornery body tells you to stay up late, sleep less, keep the lights on, don't go into the bedroom - if you have to sleep, sleep in your chair, at the table. Everything is about avoiding the night. Because of that, I suppose that I should be scared out here in the dark, but I am finally past that, I think.
(p.204) ~ Michael Zadoorian
Sleeplessness quotes by Michael Zadoorian
It struck him that in moments of crisis one is never fighting against an external enemy, but always against one's own body ... On the battlefield, in the torture chamber, on a sinking ship, the issues that you are fighting for are always forgotten, because the body swells up until it fills the universe, and even when you are not paralysed by fright or screaming with pain, life is a moment-to-moment struggle against hunger or cold or sleeplessness, against a sour stomach or an aching tooth. ~ George Orwell
Sleeplessness quotes by George Orwell
Every morning I tell myself, "I'll sleep early tonight." And every night I say, "One more chapter. ~ Joyce Rachelle
Sleeplessness quotes by Joyce Rachelle
Men ought to know that from the brain and from the brain only arise our pleasures, joys, laughter, and jests as well as our sorrows, pains, griefs and tears ... It is the same thing which makes us mad or delirious, inspires us with dread and fear, whether by night or by day, brings us sleeplessness, inopportune mistakes, aimless anxieties, absent-mindedness and acts that are contrary to habit ... ~ Hippocrates
Sleeplessness quotes by Hippocrates
As he lay there, he was sure that he could still feel the memory of that strange hand cupping the back of his neck; and he couldn't believe how empty his mouth felt, now that it only had his own tongue in it. ~ Neil Bartlett
Sleeplessness quotes by Neil Bartlett
On the nights I can't sleep, like that one, like so many recently, I wish I could just turn my mind off like a lamp. ~ Iain Reid
Sleeplessness quotes by Iain Reid
His persistence allowed us to play a game, and pretend that everything can stay as it is now forever. It cannot. The events of this day have shown us what happens when you try to keep things from changing. Sooner or later the sleeplessness catches up with you, the paranoia about threats devours you and your mind betrays you even if your body does not. ~ Frances Hardinge
Sleeplessness quotes by Frances Hardinge
Sometimes I have trouble falling asleep but it's not so bad
I don't worry and I don't weep. In fact I'm glad.
Because I get up off my pillow and I flip on the light.
I get down and get hip in the still of the night I stretch and I yawn and then I breathe real deep And dance myself to sleep.
I hoof around my beddie just a-tappin' my toes
Before I know what's happened I'm a-ready to doze
Got some partners I can count the boogie-woogie sheep
I dance myself to sleep. ~ Jim Henson
Sleeplessness quotes by Jim Henson
Sleeplessness and being a writer seem to go together hand in hand. ~ Jason E. Hodges
Sleeplessness quotes by Jason E. Hodges
Human love is emotional. Feelings dominate a human's love landscape. We feel as though we're in love, or we don't feel as though we're in love. Hormones, sleeplessness, wory, past hurts, Mexican food
all complicate these emotions. ~ Max Lucado
Sleeplessness quotes by Max Lucado
Oh, the terrible struggle that I have had against sleep so often of late; the pain of the sleeplessness, or the pain of the fear of sleep, and with such unknown horror as it has for me! How blessed are some people, whose lives have no fears, no dreads; to whom sleep is a blessing that comes nightly, and brings nothing but sweet dreams. ~ Bram Stoker
Sleeplessness quotes by Bram Stoker
Ibn Mas'ud said, "When 'Umar died nine-tenth of all knowledge vanished with him." The people were shocked and said, "How can this be when among us now are still many of the great companions?" Ibn Mas'ud replied,"I am not speaking of the knowledge of fiqh and the science of judgements, I'm speaking about the knowledge of Allah." This struggle of isolation, hunger, sleeplessness, weeping, fear and endless service to men was for this end. The journey is only for knowledge of Allah and the whole of it lies in detachment from everything that passes away. First from what is displeasing to Allah, then from one's self-illusion and desires, and then from all men and all otherness until there is only isolation and extreme nearness to Allah. ~ Khalid Muhammad Khalid
Sleeplessness quotes by Khalid Muhammad Khalid
If he goes to sleep peacefully knowing that your heart is hurt, beware of him. ~ Jyoti Patel
Sleeplessness quotes by Jyoti Patel
Can you sleep-deprive your way out of a depressed episode? Some researchers think that it may be possible. Using a technique called TSD (total sleep deprivation), researchers subjected depressed bipolar patients to three cycles of sleep deprivation, each consisting of a 36-hour period of sleeplessness followed by a 12-hour sleep-in. After the sessions, over half the participants reported feeling less depressed. The trouble is, TSD runs about a 10 percent risk of kicking a bipolar sufferer into hypomania or mania - about the same rate as SSRI antidepressants. In addition, the positive effects of TSD generally wear off as soon as you return to your normal sleep/wake cycle. Researchers continue to study the potential benefits of TSD when used in combination with other therapies, but the only solid conclusion that researchers have reached is that TSD is definitely not something you should try on your own. ~ Candida Fink
Sleeplessness quotes by Candida Fink
What a thing this sleeplessness was!...If sleep, she thought, could be compared to a gentle lake ina dark place, the sleeplessness was a roaring ocean, a raging, wind-buffeted voyage, lit with mad rocket-lights, pursued by wild phantoms from behind, plunging upon fearful rocks ahead, a mad tempest of the past and present and future all in one. Through all this the pale, strenuous mariner must somehow steer a way, until at last the weary dawn, not of sleep, but of resignation to sleeplessness, comes to calm the waters of the mind. ~ Patrick Hamilton
Sleeplessness quotes by Patrick Hamilton
Coffee and makeup would reach its limit and no longer work in hiding my sleeplessness. ~ Mandy Nachampassack-Maloney
Sleeplessness quotes by Mandy Nachampassack-Maloney
I am gay on the outside, especially among my own folk (I count Poles my own); but inside something gnaws at me; some presentiment, anxiety, dreams - or sleeplessness - melancholy, indifference - desire for life, and the next instant, desire for death; some kind of sweet peace, some kind of numbness, absent-mindedness ... ~ Frederic Chopin
Sleeplessness quotes by Frederic Chopin
Sleeplessness is a desert without vegetation or inhabitants. ~ Jessamyn West
Sleeplessness quotes by Jessamyn West
Sleeplessness is like metaphysics. Be there.
-Charles Simic ~ Charles Simic
Sleeplessness quotes by Charles Simic
I needed to see you today. Once again it could not be. So I will spend the night tossing and turning and try to talk myself out of trying to talk myself out of you. ~ Kate McGahan
Sleeplessness quotes by Kate McGahan
In troubled times, one wishes for a sound sleep more than usual, but on the contrary, realizing its amplified importance, sleep smugly impedes all attempts to woo it. ~ Pawan Mishra
Sleeplessness quotes by Pawan Mishra
My word stink
of blood and gore
of sleepless nights
of invisible demons
of razors and knives
of slashed wrists

My words - they stink. ~ Akanksha Singh
Sleeplessness quotes by Akanksha Singh
He points out that mystics have always worked systematically to modify their brain chemistry, whether through fasting, self-flagellation, sleeplessness, hypnotic movement, or chanting.* The brain can be made to drug itself, as seems to happen with certain placebos. We don't merely imagine that the placebo antidepressant is working to lift our sadness or worry - the brain is actually producing extra serotonin in response to the mental prompt of swallowing a pill containing nothing but sugar and belief. What all this suggests is that the workings of consciousness are both more and less materialistic than we usually think: chemical reactions can induce thoughts, but thoughts can also induce chemical reactions. ~ Michael Pollan
Sleeplessness quotes by Michael Pollan
Under the strain of this continually impending doom and by the sleeplessness to which I now condemned myself, ay, even beyond what I had thought possible to man, I became, in my own person, a creature eaten up and emptied by fever, languidly weak both in body and mind, and solely occupied by one thought: the horror of my other self. ~ Robert Louis Stevenson
