Just as many who were brought up to think of God as a bearded old gentleman sitting on a cloud decided that when they stopped believing in such a being they had therefore stopped believing in God, so many who were taught to think of hell as a literal underground location full of worms and fire ... decided that when they stopped believing in that, so they stopped believing in hell. The first group decided that because they couldn't believe in childish images of God, they must be atheists. The second decided that because they couldn't believe in childish images of hell, they must be universalists. ~ N. T. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by N. T. Wright
No. Knox got to his feet. I'll go get her myself. He quickly ended the business call, uncaring that he'd been rude. Opening his office door, Knox indicated for Levi to follow him. "Tanner just contacted me," said Knox. "Apparently Harper - " He cut off as a she-demon rounded the corner and came to a halt in front of him.
Belinda smiled. "Oh, Knox, I was hoping to catch you."
For fuck's sake. "What can I do for you, Miss Thacker?"
Her smile dimmed at his impatient tone. "It's about the appetizers for the event."
"I told you I want Harper to decide these things."
Belinda's mouth flattened. "She doesn't find any of my suggestions suitable."
"Then they're not suitable." Simple.
"Knox - "
"Miss Thacker, I didn't invite you to call me by my first name." Her cheeks reddened. "I gave you my orders when I hired you. They were not complicated. I specified all the details of the event that I wished to be left for Harper to decide."
"She wants steak and potato wedges on sticks!" Belinda took a deep breath and lowered her eyes. "I apologize for my outburst."
Steak and potato wedges on sticks? echoed Levi, a smile in his telepathic voice. That actually sounds pretty good.
"Do you remember the all-important order I gave you before sending you Harper's way, Miss Thacker?"
She swallowed. "Yes."
"What was it?"
Belinda met his gaze. "You told me to give her whatever she wants."
"Then do it. Now I have somewhere I need ~ Suzanne Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Suzanne Wright
Many in the church have turned their back on serious study, and have embraced an anti-intellectualism which refuses to learn anything from scholarship at all lest it corrupt their pure faith. It is time to end this standoff, and to reestablish a hermeneutic of trust (itself a sign of the gospel!) in place of the hermeneutic of suspicion which the church has so disastrously borrowed from the postmodern world. ~ N. T. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by N. T. Wright
What you did in the past is your business. Those were your choices - your mistakes - if you even believe they were mistakes. Stop caring what anyone thinks and live your life the way you want to live it. ~ Laura Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Laura Wright
My still-life painting has more to do with light and shadow than with the objects themselves. ~ William C. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by William C. Wright
After all, a silent fart has a smell that really sticks! ~ W.W. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by W.W. Wright
... spirituality is a private hobby, an upmarket version of daydreaming for those who like that kind of thing. ~ N. T. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by N. T. Wright
since humans are made for the life that comes from God and God alone, to worship that which is not God is to fall in love with death. Here ~ N. T. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by N. T. Wright
When not deeply engaged in creative activities, or numbed out by the TV, I felt empty. My heart hurt. I often felt hollow or as if I were some sort of wispy ghost, barely existing. ~ Judith Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Judith Wright
I went to the fights, and a hockey game broke out. ~ Steven Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Steven Wright
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she left me before we met. ~ Steven Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Steven Wright
Coonskin caps and silly putty were just not going to cut it anymore. The good mother got her kids toys that were educational, that advanced gross and fine motor skills, that gave them the spatial sensibilities and design aptitude of Frank Lloyd Wright, and that taught Johnny how to read James Joyce at age three. God forbid that one second should pass where your child was idle and that you were not doing everything you could to promote his or her emotional, cognitive, imaginative, quantitative, or muscular development. ~ Susan Douglas
Sieck Wright quotes by Susan Douglas
I always choose strong, direct backlighting that creates patterns of intricate abstract shadows. These shadows become strong design elements that lie across and touch other objects in the set up. ~ William C. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by William C. Wright
Easter was when Hope in person surprised the whole world by coming forward from the future into the present. ~ N. T. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by N. T. Wright
Sometimes I think Earth has got to be the insane asylum of the universe. . . and I'm here by computer error. At sixty-eight, I hope I've gained some wisdom in the past fourteen lustrums and it's obligatory to speak plain and true about the conclusions I've come to; now that I have been educated to believe by such mentors as Wells, Stapledon, Heinlein, van Vogt, Clarke, Pohl, (S. Fowler) Wright, Orwell, Taine, Temple, Gernsback, Campbell and other seminal influences in scientifiction, I regret the lack of any female writers but only Radclyffe Hall opened my eyes outside sci-fi.

I was a secular humanist before I knew the term. I have not believed in God since childhood's end. I believe a belief in any deity is adolescent, shameful and dangerous. How would you feel, surrounded by billions of human beings taking Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the tooth fairy and the stork seriously, and capable of shaming, maiming or murdering in their name? I am embarrassed to live in a world retaining any faith in church, prayer or a celestial creator. I do not believe in Heaven, Hell or a Hereafter; in angels, demons, ghosts, goblins, the Devil, vampires, ghouls, zombies, witches, warlocks, UFOs or other delusions; and in very few mundane individuals--politicians, lawyers, judges, priests, militarists, censors and just plain people. I respect the individual's right to abortion, suicide and euthanasia. I support birth control. I wish to Good that society were rid of smoking, drinking ~ Forrest J. Ackerman
Sieck Wright quotes by Forrest J. Ackerman
VERY EARLY ONE MORNING in July 1977, the FBI, having been tipped off about Operation Snow White, carried out raids on Scientology offices in Los Angeles and Washington, DC, carting off nearly fifty thousand documents. One of the files was titled "Operation Freakout." It concerned the treatment of Paulette Cooper, the journalist who had published an exposé of Scientology, The Scandal of Scientology, six years earlier. After having been indicted for perjury and making bomb threats against Scientology, Cooper had gone into a deep depression. She stopped eating. At one point, she weighed just eighty-three pounds. She considered suicide. Finally, she persuaded a doctor to give her sodium pentothal, or "truth serum," and question her under the anesthesia. The government was sufficiently impressed that the prosecutor dropped the case against her, but her reputation was ruined, she was broke, and her health was uncertain. The day after the FBI raid on the Scientology headquarters, Cooper was flying back from Africa, on assignment for a travel magazine, when she read a story in the International Herald Tribune about the raid. One of the files the federal agents discovered was titled "Operation Freakout." The goal of the operation was to get Cooper "incarcerated in a mental institution or jail. ~ Lawrence Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Lawrence Wright
The Adversary seldom loses when you play on his playing field. It's called the home court advantage. ~ Randall Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Randall Wright
We mustn't imagine that our feeling of being close to God is a true index of the reality. ~ N. T. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by N. T. Wright
Architecture is the triumph of human imagination over materials, methods, and men, to put man into possession of his own Earth. It is at least the geometric pattern of things, of life, of the human and social world. It is at best that magic framework of reality that we sometimes touch upon when we use the word order. ~ Frank Lloyd Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Frank Lloyd Wright
It has forgotten that the gospels are replete with atonement theology, through and through - only they give it to us not as a neat little system, but as a powerful, sprawling, many-sided, richly revelatory narrative in which we are invited to find ourselves, or rather to lose ourselves and to be found again the other side. ~ N. T. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by N. T. Wright
Isn't it astonishing that all these secrets have been preserved for so many years just so we could discover them! ~ Orville Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Orville Wright
Poetry seems especially like nothing else so much as itself. Poetry is not like, it is the very lining of the inner life. ~ C.D. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by C.D. Wright
It's like the Wild West, the Internet. There are no rules. ~ Steven Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Steven Wright
People afraid of outsiders are easily manipulated. The warrior caste, supposedly society's protectors, often become protection racketeers. In times of war or crisis, power is easily stolen from the many by the few on a promise of security. The more elusive or imaginary the foe, the better for manufacturing consent. The Inquisition did a roaring trade against the Devil. ~ Ronald Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Ronald Wright
New York is the biggest mouth in the world. It appears to be prime example of the herd instinct, leading the universal urban conspiracy to beguile man from his birthright (the good ground), to hang him by his eyebrows from skyhooks above hard pavement, to crucify him, sell him, or be sold by him. ~ Frank Lloyd Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Frank Lloyd Wright
You'd better stay determined, because that's how our ancestors got us where we are. ~ Marian Wright Edelman
Sieck Wright quotes by Marian Wright Edelman
Don't think I haven't noticed that you don't wear the necklace I gave you with the fishbone charm on it. It's for good luck."
Harper frowned. "How can it give good luck? Things didn't exactly go well for the fish. ~ Suzanne Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Suzanne Wright
And what about the question which looms up continually within Christian discussion, about how human behavior as a whole relates to the overwhelming grace of God? This is the point at which the story of the rich young man, and the other scenes in Mark 10, seem to be saying, No: what matters isn't simply keeping a bunch of rules; what matters is character. Not just any old sort of character, either, but a particular sort: the sort Jesus was urging and modeling - the character of patience, humility, and above all generous, self-giving love. And the message of Mark at this point seems to be that you don't get that character just by trying. You get it by following Jesus. ~ N. T. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by N. T. Wright
The germs of all truth lie in the soul, and when the ripe moment comes, the truth within answers to the fact without as the flower responds to the sun, giving it form for heat and color for light. ~ Hamilton Wright Mabie
Sieck Wright quotes by Hamilton Wright Mabie
Doing stand-up is like running across a frozen pond with the ice breaking behind you. I love it because it's dangerous. ~ Steven Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Steven Wright
Whoever said anybody has a right to give up? ~ Marian Wright Edelman
Sieck Wright quotes by Marian Wright Edelman
I see the job of directing as being one of creating the right atmosphere, creating an environment where people can realize their full potential. ~ Joe Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Joe Wright
Sitting in that room, talking to Mr. Wright, I knew I had to get all of my identities in order. I realized how many identities I had, at a time when I really should have been focusing on having one. ~ David Levithan
Sieck Wright quotes by David Levithan
Pain has a funny way of focusing the mind. Only what hurts matters. ~ John C. Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by John C. Wright
Why is it lemon juice contains mostly artificial ingredients but dishwashing liquid contains real lemons? ~ Steven Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Steven Wright
No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other. ~ Frank Lloyd Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Frank Lloyd Wright
The ultimate creative thinking technique is to think like God. If you're an atheist, pretend how God would do it. ~ Frank Lloyd Wright
Sieck Wright quotes by Frank Lloyd Wright
Joe was so tired that he had slept through first hour Spanish, second hour history, and most of third hour English. The English teacher, Mrs. Lane, hadn't taken a liking to that. She decided to send Joe to the principal to discuss why he was so sleepy, which Joe hadn't taken a liking to. ~ Belart Wright
