Nécessité absolue trouver origine de cet emmerdement [It is absolutely necessary to find the origin of this pain in the ass]. - Jacques Monod ~ Siddhartha Mukherjee
Jacques Monod quotes by Siddhartha Mukherjee
Armed with all the powers, enjoying all the wealth they owe to science, our societies are still trying to practice and to teach systems of values already destroyed at the roots by that very science. Man knows at last that he is alone in the indifferent immensity of the universe, whence which he has emerged by chance. His duty, like his fate, is written nowhere. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
Chance alone is at the source of all novelty, all creation in the biosphere. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
The discovery of an interaction among the four hemes made it obvious that they must be touching, but in science what is obvious is not necessarily true. When the structure of hemoglobin was finally solved, the hemes were found to lie in isolated pockets on the surface of the subunits. Without contact between them how could one of them sense whether the others had combined with oxygen? And how could as heterogeneous a collection of chemical agents as protons, chloride ions, carbon dioxide, and diphosphoglycerate influence the oxygen equilibrium curve in a similar way? It did not seem plausible that any of them could bind directly to the hemes or that all of them could bind at any other common site, although there again it turned out we were wrong. To add to the mystery, none of these agents affected the oxygen equilibrium of myoglobin or of isolated subunits of hemoglobin. We now know that all the cooperative effects disappear if the hemoglobin molecule is merely split in half, but this vital clue was missed. Like Agatha Christie, Nature kept it to the last to make the story more exciting. There are two ways out of an impasse in science: to experiment or to think. By temperament, perhaps, I experimented, whereas Jacques Monod thought. ~ Max F. Perutz
Jacques Monod quotes by Max F. Perutz
In science, self-satisfaction is death. Personal self-satisfaction is the death of the scientist. Collective self-satisfaction is the death of the research. It is restlessness, anxiety, dissatisfaction, agony of mind that nourish science. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
There are living systems; there is no living "matter." No substance, no single molecule, extracted and isolated from a living being possess, of its own, the aforementioned paradoxical properties. They are present in living systems only; that is to say, nowhere below the level of the cell. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
Every living being is also a fossil. Within it, all the way down to the microscopic structure of its proteins, it bears the traces if not the stigmata of its ancestry. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
It necessarily follows that chance alone is at the source of every innovation, and of all creation in the biosphere. Pure chance, absolutely free but blind, at the very root of the stupendous edifice of evolution: this central concept of modern biology is no longer one among many other possible or even conceivable hypotheses. It is today the sole conceivable hypothesis, the only one that squares with observed and tested fact. And nothing warrants the supposition - or the hope - that on this score our position is ever likely to be revised. There is no scientific concept, in any of the sciences, more destructive of anthropocentrism than this one. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
Man's destiny is nowhere spelled out, nor is his duty. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
All religions, nearly all philosophies, and even a part of science testify to the unwearying, heroic effort of mankind desperately denying its contingency. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
Chance and necessity. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
Another curious aspect of the theory of evolution is that everybody thinks he understands it. I mean philosophers, social scientists, and so on. While in fact very few people understand it, actually, as it stands, even as it stood when Darwin expressed it, and even less as we now may be able to understand it in biology. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
A totally blind process can by definition lead to anything; it can even lead to vision itself. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
Everything comes from experience; yet not from actual experience, reiterated by each individual with each generation, but instead from experience accumulated by the entire ancestry of the species in the course of its evolution. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
Among all the occurrences possible in the universe the a priori probability of any particular one of them verges upon zero. Yet the universe exists; particular events must take place in it, the probability of which (before the event) was infinitesimal. At the present time we have no legitimate grounds for either asserting or denying that life got off to but a single start on earth, and that, as a consequence, before it appeared its chances of occurring were next to nil ... Destiny is written concurrently with the event, not prior to it ... The universe was not pregnant with life nor the biosphere with man. Our number came up in the Monte Carlo game. Is it surprising that, like the person who has just made a million at the casino, we should feel strange and a little unreal? ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
One may well find oneself beginning to doubt whether all this could conceivably be the product of an enormous lottery presided over by natural selection, blindly picking the rare winners from among numbers drawn at utter random ... nevertheless although the miracle of life stands "explained" it does not strike us as any less miraculous. As Francois Mauriac wrote, What this professor says is far more incredible than what we poor Christians believe. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
Even today a good many distinguished minds seem unable to accept or even to understand that from a source of noise natural selection alone and unaided could have drawn all the music of the biosphere. In effect natural selection operates upon the products of chance and can feed nowhere else; but it operates in a domain of very demanding conditions, and from this domain chance is barred. It is not to chance but to these conditions that evolution owes its generally progressive course, its successive conquests, and the impression it gives of a smooth and steady unfolding. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
One of the great problems of philosophy, is the relationship between the realm of knowledge and the realm of values. Knowledge is what is; values are what ought to be. I would say that all traditional philosophies up to and including Marxism have tried to derive the 'ought' from the 'is.' My point of view is that this is impossible, this is a farce. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
The ancient covenant is in pieces; man knows at last that he is alone in the universe's unfeeling immensity, out of which he emerged only by chance. His destiny is nowhere spelled out, nor is his duty. The kingdom above or the darkness below: it is for him to choose. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
I became fascinated by the then-blossoming science of molecular biology when, in my senior year, I happened to read the papers by Francois Jacob and Jacques Monod on the operon theory. ~ Susumu Tonegawa
Jacques Monod quotes by Susumu Tonegawa
A curious aspect of the theory of evolution is that everybody thinks he understands it. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
The scientific attitude implies what I call the postulate of objectivity - that is to say, the fundamental postulate that there is no plan, that there is no intention in the universe. Now, this is basically incompatible with virtually all the religious or metaphysical systems whatever, all of which try to show that there is some sort of harmony between man and the universe and that man is a product - predictable if not indispensable - of the evolution of the universe. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
What is true for E. coli is also true for the elephant. ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
Chance alone is at the source of every innovaton, of all creation in the biosphere. Pure chance, only chance, absolute but blind liberty is at the root of the prodigious edifice that is evolution ... It today is the sole conceivable hypothesis, the only one that squares with observed and tested fact. Stating life began by the chance collision of particles of nucleic acid in the "prebiotic soup." ~ Jacques Monod
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Monod
Jacques La Borwitz had his points, no doubt, but so have the sub-microscopic protozoa, so has a dog prowling for a bitch and a bone." -Cecelia Brady ~ F Scott Fitzgerald
Jacques Monod quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
No aquarium, no tank in a marine land, however spacious it may be, can begin to duplicate the conditions of the sea. And no dolphin who inhabits one of those aquariums or one of those marine lands can be considered normal. ~ Jacques-Yves Cousteau
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques-Yves Cousteau
Thus engaged, with her right elbow supported by her left hand, Madame Defarge said nothing when her lord came in, but coughed just one grain of cough. This, in combination with the lifting of her darkly defined eyebrows over her toothpick by the breadth of a line, suggested to her husband that he would do well to look round the shop among the customers, for any new customer who had dropped in while he stepped over the way.

The wine-shop keeper accordingly rolled his eyes about, until they rested upon an elderly gentleman and a young lady, who were seated in a corner. Other company were there: two playing cards, two playing dominoes, three standing by the counter lengthening out a short supply of wine. As he passed behind the counter, he took notice that the elderly gentleman said in a look to the young lady, "This is our man."

"What the devil do you do in that galley there?" said Monsieur Defarge to himself; "I don't know you."

But, he feigned not to notice the two strangers, and fell into discourse with the triumvirate of customers who were drinking at the counter.

"How goes it, Jacques?" said one of these three to Monsieur Defarge. "Is all the spilt wine swallowed?"

"Every drop, Jacques," answered Monsieur Defarge.

When this interchange of Christian name was effected, Madame Defarge, picking her teeth with her toothpick, coughed another grain of cough, and raised her eyebrows by the breadth of another line.Charles Dickens
Jacques Monod quotes by Charles Dickens
There is a period in life when we go backwards as we advance. ~ Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Jacques Monod quotes by Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Why is it the philosopher who is expected to be easier and not some scientist who is even more inaccessible? ~ Jacques Derrida
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Derrida
I have always had school sickness, as others have seasickness. I cried when it was time to go back to school long after I was old enough to be ashamed of such behavior. ~ Jacques Derrida
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Derrida
If there were a nation of Gods, it would govern itself democratically. A government so perfect is not suited to men. ~ Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Jacques Monod quotes by Jean-Jacques Rousseau
The aim of modern propaganda is no longer to modify ideas, but to provoke action. ~ Jacques Ellul
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Ellul
Every discourse, even a poetic or oracular sentence, carries with it a system of rules for producing analogous things and thus an outline of methodology. ~ Jacques Derrida
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Derrida
Everything bad about France was transferred to Quebec. ~ Jacques Villeneuve
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Villeneuve
No one can act alone in the name of all and no one can accept the anarchy of a society without rules. ~ Jacques Chirac
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Chirac
There is one further distinguishing characteristic of man which is very specific indeed and about which there can be no dispute, and that is the faculty of self-improvement - a faculty which, with the help of circumstance, progressively develops all our other faculties. ~ Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Jacques Monod quotes by Jean-Jacques Rousseau
I identify myself in language, but only by losing myself in it like an object. What is realised in my history is not the past definite of what was, since it is no more, or even the present perfect of what has been in what I am, but the future anterior of what I shall have been for what I am in the process of becoming. ~ Jacques Lacan
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Lacan
The feeling I got from rallycross was a little bit more of the NASCAR aspect of it; it's a family of races where racing is a passion, and it's not the politics that come with it. ~ Jacques Villeneuve
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Villeneuve
When I wrote 'Fast Food My Way' in 2004, I hoped that my friends would prepare my recipes. Now, more people cook from that book than any other I've written in the past 30 years. ~ Jacques Pepin
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Pepin
I hooked up with director Jacques Audiard for this film called 'Rust & Bone' with Marion Cotillard. I loved that experience so much I'm truly sad that it's over! ~ Matthias Schoenaerts
Jacques Monod quotes by Matthias Schoenaerts
Americans seem sometimes to believe that if you are a thinker you must be a frowning bore, because thinking is so damn serious. ~ Jacques Maritain
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Maritain
I speak only one language, and it is not my own. ~ Jacques Derrida
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Derrida
When truth is no longer free, freedom is no longer real: the truths of the police are the truths of today. ~ Jacques Prevert
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Prevert
Cocteau is someone who has made such a profound impression on me that there's no doubt he's influenced every one of my films. ~ Jacques Rivette
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Rivette
My guess is that good and bad parenting is spread fairly evenly across different social groups. But can you imagine Tony Blair lecturing the middle class on how to bring up their children? He is far more comfortable as a latter-day exponent of the Poor Law mentality. ~ Martin Jacques
Jacques Monod quotes by Martin Jacques
For me, socialism has always been about liberty and solidarity, but also about responsibility. ~ Jacques Delors
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Delors
Leave those vain moralists, my friend, and return to the depth of your soul: that is where you will always rediscover the source of the sacred fire which so often inflamed us with love of the sublime virtues; that is where you will see the eternal image of true beauty, the contemplation of which inspires us with a holy enthusiasm. ~ Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Jacques Monod quotes by Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Women are the most spectacular instance of this. After a period of independence that came with the spread of Christianity, they were relegated to a lower order. This is all the more interesting because the gospel and the first church were never hostile to women nor treated them as minors, and the situation of women in the Roman empire (particularly in the East) was relatively favourable. In spite of this, when Christianity became a power or authority, this worked against women. A strange perversion, yet fully understandable when we allow that women represent precisely the most innovative elements in Christianity: grace, love, charity, a concern for living creatures, nonviolence, an interest in little things, the hope of new beginnings - the very elements that Christianity was setting aside in favor of glory and success. ~ Jacques Ellul

Jacques a dit. Right?
-Blue

So, Yeah, I've been careless. I guess I left a trail of clues. and I shouldn't be surprised that Blue put them together. Maybe I kind of wanted him to.

Jacques a dit is "Simon Says" in French, by the way, And it's obviously not as clever as I thought it was. ~ Becky Albertalli
Jacques Monod quotes by Becky Albertalli
One of the principal occupations of man is to divine woman. ~ Jacques De Lacretelle
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques De Lacretelle
If, by chance, someone among those men of extraordinary talent is found who has firmness of soul and who refuses to yield to the genius of his age and to debase himself with childish works, woe unto him! He will die in poverty and oblivion. ~ Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Jacques Monod quotes by Jean-Jacques Rousseau
I think that cinema has always progressed through exchanges. ~ Jacques Audiard
Jacques Monod quotes by Jacques Audiard
My way of remaining French was the financing scheme I used for Quest for Fire, with Fox funds, since it started as a 100% American production. The film was not in French and yet was French in style, reflecting my personality. ~ Jean-Jacques Annaud
Jacques Monod quotes by Jean-Jacques Annaud
She yanked her hand away as if he had burned her, rubbing her palm along her thigh. The feeling didn't go away, and neither did the butterflies he had sent winging in her stomach. "How do you know you're not a vampire?" She needed to distract him, distract both of them. "Maybe you forgot. You're certainly capable of acting like one."
This time he laughed, startling both of them. The sound was husky, low, and foreign to his ears, as if he had forgotten what it was like. His black eyes leapt to her face almost in fear.
"Not bad, wild man. First a growl, and now a laugh. We're making progress." Her eyes danced at him, reassured him. ~ Christine Feehan
Jacques Monod quotes by Christine Feehan
We cannot appreciate the art of any age without first acquiring an equivalent of the experience it depicts. ~ Jacques Barzun
