The roads to the stars are open only to those who grasp the great thoughts! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Great Thoughts quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
Women often have a great need to portray themselves as sympathetic and pleasing, but we're also dark people with dark thoughts. ~ Zadie Smith
Great Thoughts quotes by Zadie Smith
On any given day, I'm likely to be working at home, hunched over this keyboard, typing Great Thoughts and Beautiful Sentences - or so they seem at the time, like those beautifully flecked and iridescent stones one finds at the seashore that gradually dry into dull gray pebbles. ~ Michael Dirda
Great Thoughts quotes by Michael Dirda
Yes, read about jobs and your hours and wages. Yes, you must strike, you must have better lives. But you must read also about the stars - and about the big spaces - silent - not one single little sound for many, many million years. To be free you must grow as big as that - inside of your head, inside of your soul. It is not enough to be free of a czar, a kaiser or a sweatshop boss. What will you do when they are gone? My fine people, how will you run the world? You are deaf and blind, you must be free to open your own ears and eyes, to look into the books and see what is there - great thoughts and feelings, great ideas! And when you have seen, then you must think - you must think it all out every time! That is freedom! ~ Ernest Poole
Great Thoughts quotes by Ernest Poole
There are so many Al Anon fans and friends who have shown me wonderful love, prayers, thoughts! I thank everyone for this. It feels great to have wonderful people behind you, pushing and praying for you. Mostly, I don't want to let myself down, but they encourage me not to let them down. ~ Steven Adler
Great Thoughts quotes by Steven Adler
It is the compelling power of great thoughts and ideas to engender phrases of equal size. ~ Aristophanes
Great Thoughts quotes by Aristophanes
Who can mistake great thoughts? They seize upon the mind; arrest and search, And shake it; bow the tall soul as by wind; Rush over it like a river reeds. ~ Philip James Bailey
Great Thoughts quotes by Philip James Bailey
Who you affect is more powerful than who you are at any given moment. Nothing is as enduring as a great memory. In the end, its only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, and feelings that last. Stone cracks. Wood rots. Skin dies. But great thoughts, beautiful experiences, and inspiring legends… they live forever. If you can change the way people think and feel, the way they see themselves, and the way they interpret the world, it means you can change the way they live their lives, and how they affect others. That is, by far, the longest lasting thing you can create. ~ John Geiger
Great Thoughts quotes by John Geiger
Our world is being shaken to its very foundations. Instead of offering great thoughts about God, the meaning of reality, and the gospel, there are evangelical churches that are offering only little therapeutic nostrums that are sweet but mostly worthless. One even wonders whether some current churchgoers might even be resistant were they to encounter a Christianity that is deep, costly, and demanding. ~ David F. Wells
Great Thoughts quotes by David F. Wells
You bring out a lot of your own thoughts and attitudes when acting. I think a great deal of it has to do with the inner you. ~ Ginger Rogers
Great Thoughts quotes by Ginger Rogers
Just think! This whole world of ours is only a speck of mildew sprung up on a tiny planet, yet we think we can have something great - thoughts,, actions! They are all but grains of sand ~ Leo Tolstoy
Great Thoughts quotes by Leo Tolstoy
Great thoughts are against all doctrines of conformity ~ Austin Osman Spare
Great Thoughts quotes by Austin Osman Spare
Imagination is a confident hope. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Thoughts quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
I was probably 14 or 15 when I was first on stage at school doing 'Measure for Measure.' I immediately felt it was a great way of expressing oneself at a moment when I didn't think I could express myself, really. I suddenly had access to this range of emotions and thoughts and feelings that were there in me. I was surprised by that. ~ Chiwetel Ejiofor
Great Thoughts quotes by Chiwetel Ejiofor
Adams has done a bit of everything, from radio to television to designing computer games. Not all of them worked out.

"These are life's little learning experiences," he said. "You know what a learning experience is? A learning experience is one of those things that says, 'You know that thing you just did? Don't do that.'

"At the end of all this being-determined-to-be-a-jack-of-all-trades, I think I'm better off just sitting down and putting a hundred thousand words in a cunning order."

Adams writes "slowly and painfully."

"People assume you sit in a room, looking pensive and writing great thoughts," he said. "But you mostly sit in a room looking panic-stricken and hoping they haven't put a guard on the door yet. ~ Douglas Adams
Great Thoughts quotes by Douglas Adams
Christian minds have been conformed to the modern spirit: the spirit, that is, that spawns great thoughts of man and leaves room for only small thoughts of God. ~ J.I. Packer
Great Thoughts quotes by J.I. Packer
Great thoughts and a pure heart, that is what we should ask from God. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Great Thoughts quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
One needs to properly possess only a couple of great thoughts
they shed light on many stretches whose illumination one would never have believed in. ~ Georg Simmel
Great Thoughts quotes by Georg Simmel
I'm not a writer. I know a lot of writers; I know a handful of really excellent, great ones, and I know what they're like. They are in love with language. They're obsessed with it. Even if their thoughts aren't more special than anybody else's, they have a way of putting them into words that makes them sensational. ~ David Small
Great Thoughts quotes by David Small
To be able to always have a super sense of who I was and my own real identity and be petty and seem informed and always thinking in thoughts would be great. ~ Jeff Goldblum
Great Thoughts quotes by Jeff Goldblum
Great thoughts of your sin alone will drive you to despair; but great thoughts of Christ will pilot you into the haven of peace. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Great Thoughts quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
The ground of all great thoughts is sadness. ~ Philip James Bailey
Great Thoughts quotes by Philip James Bailey
Genius guarantees the faculties of the heart. Man is no less immortal than the soul. Great thoughts spring from reason! Fraternity is not a myth. Newborn children know nothing of life, not even greatness. In misfortune, friends increase. ~ Comte De Lautreamont
Great Thoughts quotes by Comte De Lautreamont
Often we allow ourselves to be upset by small things we should despise and forget. We lose many irreplaceable hours brooding over grievances that, in a year's time, will be forgotten by us and by everybody. No, let us devote our life to worthwhile actions and feelings, to great thoughts, real affections and enduring undertakings. ~ Andre Maurois
Great Thoughts quotes by Andre Maurois
If you have great thoughts, don't let them fly only in your mind; let them migrate to other minds as well! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Great Thoughts quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
It is not upon you alone the dark patches fall, The dark threw patches down upon me also; The best I had done seemed to me blank and suspicious; My great thoughts, as I supposed them, were they not in reality meagre? would not people laugh at me? It is not you alone who know what it is to be evil; I am he who knew what it was to be evil; I too knitted the old knot of contrariety, Blabbed, blushed, resented, lied, stole, grudged; Had guile, anger, lust, hot wishes I dared not speak; Was wayward, vain, greedy, shallow, sly, cowardly, malignant; The wolf, the snake, the hog, not wanting in me; The cheating look, the frivolous word, the adulterous wish, not wanting; Refusals, hates, postponements, meanness, laziness, none of these wanting. ~ Walt Whitman
Great Thoughts quotes by Walt Whitman
All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Great Thoughts quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
It is important to say all the great thoughts again, without knowing that they have already been said. ~ Elias Canetti
Great Thoughts quotes by Elias Canetti
Reputation is favorable notoriety as distinguished from fame, which is permanent approval of great deeds and noble thoughts by the best intelligence of mankind. ~ George William Curtis
Great Thoughts quotes by George William Curtis
Be self-responsible. Be less dependent on other people. Aim at being the most responsible person you can be. Read about great, successful leaders. Learn to think great thoughts and work to be an excellent person. ~ Mark F. LaMoure
Great Thoughts quotes by Mark F. LaMoure
Let each man think himself an act of God, His mind a thought, his life a breath of God; And let each try, by great thoughts and good deeds, To show the most of Heaven he hath in him. ~ Philip James Bailey
Great Thoughts quotes by Philip James Bailey
Our Nation, a great stage for the acting out of great thoughts, presents the classic confrontation between Locke's views of the state of nature and Rousseau's criticism of them ... Nature is raw material, worthless without the mixture of human labor; yet nature is also the highest and most sacred thing. The same people who struggle to save the snail-darter bless the pill, worry about hunting deer and defend abortion. Reverence for nature, mastery of nature- whichever is convenient. ~ Allan Bloom
Great Thoughts quotes by Allan Bloom
All great deeds and all great thoughts have a ridiculous beginning. Great works are often born on a street corner or in a restaurant's revolving door. ~ Albert Camus
Great Thoughts quotes by Albert Camus
Our great thoughts, our great affections, the truths of our life, never leave us. Surely they can not separate from our consciousness, shall follow it whithersoever that shall go, and are of their nature divine and immortal. ~ William Makepeace Thackeray
Great Thoughts quotes by William Makepeace Thackeray
You cannot escape the results of your thoughts. Whatever your present environment may be, you will fall, remain or rise with your thoughts, your vision, your ideal. You will become as small as your controlling desire; as great as your dominant aspiration. ~ James Lane Allen
Great Thoughts quotes by James Lane Allen
He only is great at heart who floods the world with a great affection. He only is great of mind who stirs the world with great thoughts. He only is great of will who does something to shape the world to a great career. And he is greatest who does the most of all these things and does them best. ~ Roswell Dwight Hitchcock
Great Thoughts quotes by Roswell Dwight Hitchcock
The Dalai Lama once said that 'If science proves some belief of Buddhism wrong, then Buddhism will have to change!' This is a great thought! And great thoughts belong to great men only! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Great Thoughts quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
Pathology, probably more than any other branch of science, suffers from heroes and hero-worship. Rudolf Virchow has been its archangel and William Welch its John the Baptist, while Paracelsus and Cohnheim have been relegated to the roles of Lucifer and Beelzebub ... Actually, there are no heroes in Pathology-all of the great thoughts permitting advance have been borrowed from other fields, and the renaissance of pathology stems not from pathology itself but from the philosophers Kant and Goethe. ~ Harry S.N. Greene
Great Thoughts quotes by Harry S.N. Greene
I had spent all the years I had been in Lo-Melkhiin's body giving power to men who I thought would use it in ways that might serve me. I had given them great art and great thoughts, and they never guessed that they fed a terrible hunger in me that would require feeding until they died trying to sate it. They had done great things and made great tales, but I had been blind. All of this time, I had had access to more power than I had imagined, and I had missed it because I saw with men's eyes. I had forgotten the girls who scrubbed the floors and spun the yarn. I had forgotten the women who dyed the cloth and worked with henna. I had married three hundred girls, and as much as eaten them all before they were done cooking. ~ E.K. Johnston
Great Thoughts quotes by E.K. Johnston
When I read great literature, great drama, speeches, or sermons, I feel that the human mind has not achieved anything greater than the ability to share feelings and thoughts through language. ~ James Earl Jones
Great Thoughts quotes by James Earl Jones
Nurture you mind with great thoughts ~ Gunnar Nelson
Great Thoughts quotes by Gunnar Nelson
I found college useful for a lot of other reasons. It exposed me to a great many influences I wouldn't otherwise have encountered, and gave me a lot of time with some very intelligent people whose thoughts are still with me. ~ Walter Jon Williams
Great Thoughts quotes by Walter Jon Williams
If you want a language to survive, capture great thoughts within it. William Shakespeare has ensured Elizabethan English will never perish from this world. ~ James Rozoff
Great Thoughts quotes by James Rozoff
Great thoughts, great life. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Thoughts quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
It is not for a care-free existence I am fighting, but for the possibility of devoting myself to the task which I believe and know has been laid upon me by God
the work which seems to me more important and needful in Norway than any other, that of arousing the nation and leading it to think great thoughts. ~ Henrik Ibsen
Great Thoughts quotes by Henrik Ibsen
Was Du erlebst, kann keine Macht der Welt Dir rauben. (What you have experienced, no power on earth can take from you.) Not only our experiences, but all we have done, whatever great thoughts we may have had and all we have suffered, all this is not lost, though it is past; we have brought it into being. Having been is a kind of being, and perhaps the surest kind. ~ Viktor E. Frankl
Great Thoughts quotes by Viktor E. Frankl
The power of great thoughts, timeless possibilities. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Thoughts quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
A great hallmark of mental wellness is the ability to be in the present moment, fully and with no thoughts of being elsewhere. ~ Wayne Dyer
Great Thoughts quotes by Wayne Dyer
Greatness is attained only by the thinking of great thoughts. ~ Wallace D. Wattles
Great Thoughts quotes by Wallace D. Wattles
Nurture your mind with great thoughts, for you will never go any higher than you think. ~ Benjamin Disraeli
Great Thoughts quotes by Benjamin Disraeli
Great thoughts come from the heart ~ Luc De Clapiers De Vauvenargues
Great Thoughts quotes by Luc De Clapiers De Vauvenargues
The greatest gift in life is the ability to think great thoughts and have the strength to take action so that those thoughts become reality in this wonderful and abundant world. ~ Jack Black
Great Thoughts quotes by Jack Black
When we reflect that her century was the brutalest, the wickedest, the rottenest in history since the darkest ages, we are lost in wonder at the miracle of such a product from such a soil. The contrast between her and her century is the contrast between day and night. She was truthful when lying was the common speech of men; she was honest when honesty was become a lost virtue; she was a keeper of promises when the keeping of a promise was expected of no one; she gave her great mind to great thoughts and great purposes when other great minds wasted themselves upon pretty fancies or upon poor ambitions; she was modest, and fine, and delicate when to be loud and coarse might be said to be universal; she was full of pity when a merciless cruelty was the rule; she was steadfast when stability was unknown, and honorable in an age which had forgotten what honor was; she was a rock of convictions in a time when men believed in nothing and scoffed at all things; she was unfailingly true to an age that was false to the core; she maintained her personal dignity unimpaired in an age of fawnings and servilities; she was of a dauntless courage when hope and courage had perished in the hearts of her nation; she was spotlessly pure in mind and body when society in the highest places was foul in both - she was all these things in an age when crime was the common business of lords and princes, and when the highest personages in Christendom were able to astonish even that infamous era and make ~ Mark Twain
Great Thoughts quotes by Mark Twain
The paradox is really the pathos of intellectual life and just as only great souls are exposed to passions it is only the great thinker who is exposed to what I call paradoxes, which are nothing else than grandiose thoughts in embryo. ~ Soren Kierkegaard
Great Thoughts quotes by Soren Kierkegaard
Blest is he whose heart is the home of the great dead and their great thoughts. ~ Philip James Bailey
Great Thoughts quotes by Philip James Bailey
Time is of no account with great thoughts. They are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author's minds, ages ago. ~ Samuel Smiles
Great Thoughts quotes by Samuel Smiles
Books were cities I'd never visited, filled with pillars of great thoughts and streets of phrases, mazes of abstruse sentence structures and alleys of complicated syllables. They were stores that displayed a wide range of things, punctuation twinkling like the crest of a venerable family, sentences breathing peacefully, words whispering. ~ Jung-Myung Lee
Great Thoughts quotes by Jung-Myung Lee
This woman gained comfort in her misery by thinking GREAT THOUGHTS OF CHRIST. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Great Thoughts quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Men saw the stars at the edge of the sea They thought great thoughts about liberty Poets wrote down words that did fit Writers wrote books Thinkers thought about it. ~ Van Morrison
Great Thoughts quotes by Van Morrison
Nothing is quite so wretchedly corrupt as an aristocracy which has lost its power but kept its wealth and which still has endless leisure to devote to nothing but banal enjoyments. All its great thoughts and passionate energy are things of the past, and nothing but a host of petty, gnawing vices now cling to it like worms to a corpse. ~ Alexis De Tocqueville
Great Thoughts quotes by Alexis De Tocqueville
I'll tell you truly: I value my thought and work terribly, but in essence - think about it - this whole world of ours is just a bit of mildew that grew over a tiny planet. And we think we can have something great - thoughts, deeds! They're all grains of sand ~ Leo Tolstoy
Great Thoughts quotes by Leo Tolstoy
He that hath slight thoughts of sin never had great thoughts of God. ~ John Owen
Great Thoughts quotes by John Owen
The creative life! Ascension. Passing beyond oneself. Rocketing out into the blue, grasping at flying ladders, mounting, soaring, lifting the world up by the scalp, rousing the angels from their ethereal lairs, drowning in stellar depths, clinging to the tails of comets. Nietzsche had written of it ecstatically - and then swooned forward into the mirror to die in root and flower. «Stairs and contradictory stairs,» he wrote, and then suddenly there was no longer any bottom; the mind, like a splintered diamond, was pulverized by the hammer−blows of truth. There was a time when I acted as my father's keeper. I was left alone for long hours, cooped up in the little booth which we used as an office. While he was drinking with his cronies I was feeding from the bottle of creative life. My companions were the free spirits, the overlords of the soul. The young man sitting there in the mingy yellow light became completely unhinged; he lived in the crevices of great thoughts, crouched like a hermit in the barren folds of a lofty mountain range. From truth he passed to imagination and from imagination to invention. At this last portal, through which there is no return, fear beset him. To venture farther was to wander alone, to rely wholly upon oneself. The purpose of discipline is to promote freedom. But freedom leads to infinity and infinity is terrifying. Then arose the comforting thought of stopping at the brink, of setting down in words the mysteries of impulsion, compulsion, propu ~ Henry Miller
Great Thoughts quotes by Henry Miller
As often as I feel certain that God exists, I feel as often at a loss to say what difference it makes
that He exists
or even; that to believe in God, which I do, raises more questions than it presents answers. Thus, when I am feeling my most faithful, I also feel full of a few hard questions that I would like to put to God
I mean, critical questions of the How-Can-He, How-Could-He, How-Dare-You variety." But don't let this religious "stuff" turn you off. This is fiction, pure and simple. He just brings out some great thoughts on the way. ~ John Irving
Great Thoughts quotes by John Irving
Great thoughts in crude, unshapely verse set forth lose half their preciousness, and ever must, unless the diamond with its own rich dust be cut and polished, it seems little worth. ~ Thomas Bailey Aldrich
Great Thoughts quotes by Thomas Bailey Aldrich
A poet is not somebody who has great thoughts. That is the menial duty of the philosopher. A poet is somebody who expresses his thoughts, however commonplace they may be, exquisitely. That is the one and only difference between the poet and everybody else. ~ Mark Forsyth
Great Thoughts quotes by Mark Forsyth
They never had a better computer. They never had better lights. They never had better communication apparatus. They never had the finest tools. They never had the best transport system. They never had a perfect comfort. They never had all people loving them and their works. They never had all the financial resources. They never had the best garments. They never had the best and the most of all things. They never had all that they needed but they had ideas. They had a vision. Their hearts were filled with reasons to move. Their minds were pregnant with great thoughts and they wanted to prove what was in them. They took bold steps in wisdom and they were able to do distinctive things with what they had, and they left distinctive marks on minds before they left. ~ Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Great Thoughts quotes by Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
I paint ideas, not things. My intention is less to paint works that are pleasing to the eye than to suggest great thoughts which will speak to the imagination and the heart and will arouse all that is noblest and best in man. ~ George Frederic Watts
Great Thoughts quotes by George Frederic Watts
The front aspect of great thoughts can only be enjoyed by those who stand on the side whence they arrive. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Great Thoughts quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Thought breeds thought; children familiar with great thoughts take as naturally to thinking for themselves as the well-nourished body takes to growing; and we must bear in mind that growth, physical, intellectual, moral, spiritual, is the sole end of education. ~ Charlotte M. Mason
Great Thoughts quotes by Charlotte M. Mason
Education would be a divine thing, if it did nothing more than help us to think and love great thoughts instead of little thoughts. ~ John Lancaster Spalding
Great Thoughts quotes by John Lancaster Spalding
In L.A., I love the L'Ermitage in Beverly Hills. Also, the Beverly Wilshire, where they make great huevos rancheros. I also love Shutters on the Beach, where I walk around everywhere in a bathrobe. ~ Adam Richman
Great Thoughts quotes by Adam Richman
Day by day thou art making me worthy of the simple, great gifts that thou gavest to me unasked - this sky and the light, this body and the life and the mind - saving me from perils of overmuch desire. ~ Rabindranath Tagore
Great Thoughts quotes by Rabindranath Tagore
The Holy ... Machine?" I mumbled.
"Yes." She gave a little laugh. "A great miracle. He is a kind of robot, but God has given him a soul - and not an ordinary human soul either, but the soul of a saint or an angel!"
"But ... I thought robots were ... bad ... "
"Yes, of course, and Mary Magdalene was a whore. To God, all things are possible. ~ Chris Beckett
Great Thoughts quotes by Chris Beckett
A lot of people do talk about the demise of the album, but I still believe that if an artist tries hard to make a great album, people will buy it and listen to it as an album, rather than just a collection of random songs. ~ Moby
Great Thoughts quotes by Moby
Malefactors of great wealth have arrogantly ignored the public welfare. ~ Theodore Roosevelt
Great Thoughts quotes by Theodore Roosevelt
There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people ... Religion, Politics, and The Great Pumpkin. ~ Charles M. Schulz
Great Thoughts quotes by Charles M. Schulz
By planting rye I am creating carbon sinks in my backyard, expanding my role in the carbon cycle, launching my own backyard campaign to offset global warming. My emissions, after all, reflect a rural but very comfortable life in which I enjoy goods that travel great distances - clementines from Spain, wine from California - and on the occasional holiday I fly south, seeking warmer places. Will planting rye in the shoulder seasons be enough to make a difference? Certainly not, but it is a gesture, a way to frame the question and provide a benchmark to judge the extent of my complicity. ~ Amy Seidl
Great Thoughts quotes by Amy Seidl
Most students have thoughts about emigrating to Israel. A significant number go on aliyah. We are proud of our Israel programs, which come at a considerable cost to the university. ~ Norman Lamm
Great Thoughts quotes by Norman Lamm
I have great faith in the people of Montana; they can't be bought. ~ Jon Tester
Great Thoughts quotes by Jon Tester
Actually, I find it great fun to develop family series with lots of characters. ~ Nora Roberts
Great Thoughts quotes by Nora Roberts
I think the internet is a great marketing tool
but marketing is not my job. I'm a writer. My job is to write novels. ~ Bentley Little
Great Thoughts quotes by Bentley Little
I wish nights like this weren't so fragile and slippery and impossible to nail down for study in one's leisure. But the really great nights pass through you like whispers or shadows. They shimmer, but don't adhere. ~ Pat Conroy
Great Thoughts quotes by Pat Conroy
If we do not like what is happening to us, it is a sure sign that we are in need of a change of mental diet. For man, we are told, lives not by bread alone but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God. And having discovered the mouth of God to be the mind of man, a mind which lives on Words or inner talking, we should feed into our minds only loving, noble thoughts. For with Words or inner talking we build our world. Let love's lordly hand raise your hunger and thirst to all that is noble and of good report, and let your mind starve e'er you raise your hand to a cup love did not fill or a bowl love did not bless. That you may never again have to say, What have I said? What have I done, O All Powerful Human Word? ~ Neville Goddard
Great Thoughts quotes by Neville Goddard
I believe that a scientist looking at nonscientific problems is just as dumb as the next guy. ~ Richard P. Feynman
Great Thoughts quotes by Richard P. Feynman
Become Aware of Memory Bias

When people are anxious, they often have biased recall for events. For example, Brian talks himself into believing he screwed up an interview for a promotion because he thinks over and over about things he could've said. However, he doesn't as easily recall the good answers he gave. He endlessly mentally rehashes ambiguous cues the interviewers gave off, such as appearing to rush through questions, but doesn't as easily recall when the interviewers responded positively.
Another example: A friend of mine used to talk herself into believing she'd failed every exam she ever took. She'd ruminate over all the answers she hadn't known and wouldn't recall questions she'd been able to answer correctly. The take-home message when you're ruminating: Don't trust your memory. You might be ruminating about something fictional or at least magnified. This also applies to ruminating about how you think others perceive you; you may just be mind reading based on a biased memory of interactions.
Experiment: Do you have any current rumination topics where memory bias might be playing a role? If you can't think of anything now, come back to this experiment when you have an issue that fits. Answer the following questions:

1. What's your ruminating mind telling you?
2. What are the objective data telling you about whether your ruminative thoughts are likely to be correct? For example, my friend who always convinced herself she'd fail ~ Alice Boyes
Great Thoughts quotes by Alice Boyes
Imagination is a glorious wonder. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Great Thoughts quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
IT IS WITH OUR FACES that we face the world, from the moment of birth to the moment of death. Our age and our sex are printed on our faces. Our emotions, the open and instinctive emotions which Darwin wrote about, as well as the hidden or repressed ones which Freud wrote about, are displayed on our faces, along with our thoughts and intentions. Though we may admire arms and legs, breasts and buttocks, it is the face, first and last, which is judged "beautiful" in an aesthetic sense, "fine" or "distinguished" in a moral or intellectual sense. And, crucially, it is by our faces that we can be recognized as individuals. Our faces bear the stamp of our experiences and character; at forty, it is said, a man has the face he deserves. At ~ Oliver Sacks
Great Thoughts quotes by Oliver Sacks
A man is thirty years old before he has any settled thoughts of his fortune; it is not completed before fifty. He falls to building in his old age, and dies by the time his house is in a condition to be painted and glazed. ~ Jean De La Bruyere
Great Thoughts quotes by Jean De La Bruyere
Word inflation ... Bigger and better. Good greater greatest totally great. Hyperbolic and hyperbolicker. Like grade-inflation. ~ David Foster Wallace
Great Thoughts quotes by David Foster Wallace
Poverty is a great educator. Having no boundaries and refusing to be ignored, it mostly teaches hopelessness. But not always. Politics is also a great educator. Mostly it teaches, I am afraid, cynicism. But not always. Television is a great educator as well. Mostly it teaches consumerism. But not always. It is the "not always" that keeps the romantic spirit alive in those who write about schooling. The faith is that despite some of the more debilitating teachings of culture itself, something can be done in school that will alter the lenses through which one sees the world; which is to say, that nontrivial schooling can provide a point of view from which what IS can be seen clearly, what WAS as a living present, and what WILL BE as filled with possibility ~ Neil Postman
Great Thoughts quotes by Neil Postman
Color is not a trivial subject but one that has compelled, for hundreds of years, a passionate curiosity in the greatest artists, philosophers, and natural scientists. The young Spinoza wrote his first treatise on the rainbow; the young Newton's most joyous discovery was the composition of white light; Goethe's great color work, like Newton's, started with a prism; Schopenhauer, Young, Helmholtz, and Maxwell, in the last century, were all tantalized by the problem of color; and Wittgenstein's last work was his Remarks on Colour. And yet most of us, most of the time, overlook its great mystery. ~ Oliver Sacks
Great Thoughts quotes by Oliver Sacks
I just told my agent to forget all other projects for me. I was waiting for Audrey Hepburn. She asked for me, and I was ready. This could be the last and only opportunity I'd have to work with the great and lovely Audrey Hepburn and I was not missing it. Period. ~ Fred Astaire
Great Thoughts quotes by Fred Astaire
In fact, if you look upon the situation today, there is great division in the world and we have failed to capitalize on that unity to finish the job in Afghanistan and against al Qaeda. ~ Chris Van Hollen
Great Thoughts quotes by Chris Van Hollen
The great challenge to the modern period, and its peculiar danger, has been that in it man for the first time confronted man without the protection of differing circumstances and conditions. And it has been precisely this new concept of equality that has made modern race relations so difficult, for there we deal with natural differences which by no possible and conceivable change of conditions can become less conspicuous. It is because equality demands that I recognize each and every individual as my equal, that the conflicts between different groups, which for reasons of their own are reluctant to grant each other this basic equality, take on such terribly cruel forms. ~ Hannah Arendt
Great Thoughts quotes by Hannah Arendt
Performing is always my biggest rush. The energy is boundless from a great crowd. I truly believe in energy as a force that is exchanged, especially in a performance situation. You give your utmost and the audience gives it back tenfold. ~ Matt Sorum
Great Thoughts quotes by Matt Sorum
Rebuild your world, rebuild your race, rebuild your empire. Rebuild it all. But make sure you rebuild your ideals too. Rebuild the principles that made you a great and honorable galactic power in the first place. Don't prey on the weak. Don't steal from the helpless. Don't murder the innocent. Be a force for good, not a force for yourself. ~ Dan Abnett
Great Thoughts quotes by Dan Abnett
What do you think is my favourite book? Just now, I mean; I change every three days. "Wuthering Heights." Emily Bronte was quite young when she wrote it, and had never been outside of Haworth churchyard. She had never known any men in her life; how could she imagine a man like Heathcliff?
I couldn't do it, and I'm quite young and never outside the John Grier Asylum - I've had every chance in the world. Sometimes a dreadful fear comes over me that I'm not a genius. Will you be awfully disappointed, Daddy, if I don't turn out to be a great author? ~ Jean Webster
Great Thoughts quotes by Jean Webster
I Deserve It.
I'd rather be disappointed by the truth than satisfied with a lie. Respect me, not because I respect you, but because I deserve your respect. How pleased would you be if you found out I respected you only because I wanted you to respect me back or because I wanted something in return? I respect you because you deserve it. Don't listen to me just because I listen to you. I listen to you because you deserve to be heard. Don't be nice to me just because I'm nice to you. I'm nice to you because you deserve to be treated right. Don't show me that you care just because you know I care. I care for you because your heart needs care. If your thoughts and feelings are not genuine, point them in a direction other than mine. If I only give you what you deserve, at least keep me away from what I don't deserve. ~ Najwa Zebian
Great Thoughts quotes by Najwa Zebian
Ego, when given the chance, will direct all thoughts and actions to its own purpose and passion. It hijacks all work of the soul, and runs the mind and body completely contrary to the soul's mission. ~ Sean Patrick Brennan
