A respectable-sized audience hasn't really been able to follow developments in jazz since the free jazz movement in the '60s. Some of them can't even get with John Coltrane. Audiences are diminishing more and more rapidly. Some of the top young musicians with something new to say can't get record companies to put out their stuff. ~ Harvey Pekar
Free Jazz quotes by Harvey Pekar
I don't want to do free jazz! Because free jazz - which is the musical equivalent of free marketeering - isn't actually free at all. It's just constrained by what your muscles can do. ~ Brian Eno
Free Jazz quotes by Brian Eno
My music is the spiritual expression of what I am - my faith, my knowledge, my being ... When you begin to see the possibilities of music, you desire to do something really good for people, to help humanity free itself from its hangups ... I want to speak to their souls. ~ John Coltrane
Free Jazz quotes by John Coltrane
I'm moved by a lot of different kinds of music, whether it's pop music or R&B or straight-ahead jazz or free or opera or music from all parts of the world. ~ David Sanborn
Free Jazz quotes by David Sanborn
Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano. She is one of a very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz. ~ Jon Pareles
Free Jazz quotes by Jon Pareles
The numerous ecstatic traditions - including free jazz and funk - have all been great inspirations. ~ David First
Free Jazz quotes by David First
It is no wonder that so much of the search for identity, among American Negroes, was championed by jazz musicians. Long before the modern essayists and scholars wrote of racial identity as a problem for a multiracial world, musicians were returning to their roots to affirm that which was stirring within their souls. Much of the power of our Freedom Movement in the United States has come from the music. It has strengthened us with its sweet rhythms when courage began to fail. It has calmed us with its rich harmonies when spirits were down. And now, Jazz is exported to the world. For, in a particular struggle of the Negro in America, there is something akin to the universal struggle of modern man. Everybody has
the Blues. Everybody longs for meaning. Everybody
needs to clap hands and be happy. Everybody longs for faith. In music, especially this broad category called jazz, there is a stepping-stone towards all these. ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
Free Jazz quotes by Martin Luther King Jr.
In my teenage years I was as addicted to great pop as I was to free jazz, electronic music, and hardcore blues. ~ Scott Walker
Free Jazz quotes by Scott Walker
A way to make new music is to imagine looking back at the past from a future and imagine music that could have existed but didn't. Like East African free jazz, which as far as I know does not exist. ~ Brian Eno
Free Jazz quotes by Brian Eno
Jazz presumes that it would be nice if the four of us--simpatico dudes that we are--while playing this complicated song together, might somehow be free and autonomous as well. Tragically, this never quite works out. At best, we can only be free one or two at a time--while the other dudes hold onto the wire. Which is not to say that no one has tried to dispense with wires. Many have, and sometimes it works--but it doesn't feel like jazz when it does. The music simply drifts away into the stratosphere of formal dialectic, beyond our social concerns.

Rock-and-roll, on the other hand, presumes that the four of us--as damaged and anti-social as we are--might possibly get it to-fucking-gether, man, and play this simple song. And play it right, okay? Just this once, in tune and on the beat. But we can't. The song's too simple, and we're too complicated and too excited. We try like hell, but the guitars distort, the intonation bends, and the beat just moves, imperceptibly, against our formal expectations, whetehr we want it to or not. Just because we're breathing, man. Thus, in the process of trying to play this very simple song together, we create this hurricane of noise, this infinitely complicated, fractal filigree of delicate distinctions.

And you can thank the wanking eighties, if you wish, and digital sequencers, too, for proving to everyone that technologically "perfect" rock--like "free" jazz--sucks rockets. Because order sucks. I mean, look at the Stone ~ Dave Hickey
Free Jazz quotes by Dave Hickey
I love free trade. I love the concept of free trade. Everything about it is good. I went to the Wharton School of Finance. They say, Let's go free trade. ~ Donald Trump
Free Jazz quotes by Donald Trump
You talk to it, and talk to it. And the stone listens, absorbing all your words, all your secrets, until one fine day it explodes. Bursts into tiny pieces." She cleans and moistens the man's eyes. "And on that day you are set free from all your pain, all your suffering ... ~ Atiq Rahimi
Free Jazz quotes by Atiq Rahimi
Water must be free for sustenance needs. Since nature gives water to us free of cost, buying and selling it for profit violates our inherent right to nature's gift and denies the poor of their human rights. ~ Vandana Shiva
Free Jazz quotes by Vandana Shiva
Every man is free to push the mountains, but mountains won't move with these pushes. ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Free Jazz quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
You may be able
to fly to heaven with my love.
But for real, my love is only
a cheap wine.
Seriously,
Only God's love is the precious wine.
And She even
gives it to everyone.
For free! ~ Subhan Zein
Free Jazz quotes by Subhan Zein
Good habits, which bring our lower passions and appetites under automatic control, leave our natures free to explore the larger experiences of life. Too many of us divide and dissipate our energies in debating actions which should be taken for granted. ~ Ralph W. Sockman
Free Jazz quotes by Ralph W. Sockman
Whether I do jazz or R&B, there are always complaints. I would just listen to the complaints about what I do instead of celebrating what I do, and that I'm different and in my own lane. It took a while for me to just ignore the doubts. ~ Ledisi
Free Jazz quotes by Ledisi
I think that the very earliest influence was a horror of having to work in a bank or an office, a desire for a free and creative life. ~ Frank Auerbach
Free Jazz quotes by Frank Auerbach
We are truly one nation, under God, indivisible and that we must remain so in the face of any threat to ensure our country remains strong, united and free. ~ Michael Enzi
Free Jazz quotes by Michael Enzi
Where human eyes have never seen, where human beings have never been, I build a world of abstract dreams, and I wait for you. ~ Sun Ra
Free Jazz quotes by Sun Ra
Sometimes, son," my father said, prying my fingers free, "you have to help the heroes along. ~ Brandon Sanderson
Free Jazz quotes by Brandon Sanderson
Though the Jazz Age continued it became less and less an affair of youth. The sequel was like a children's party taken over by the elders. ~ F Scott Fitzgerald
Free Jazz quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
Each of us has a mountain to climb. To reach the summit you need to understand who you are and what you can do. Without an idea of your strengths and weaknesses you cannot define your personal limits. Survival training helps you figure that bit out. It makes you stronger, more fearless and ultimatley resilient! There is no easy or pain free way to the summit – you just have to endure and climb to it by yourself. ~ Rich Hungerford
Free Jazz quotes by Rich Hungerford
Many free countries have lost their liberty, and ours may lose hers; but, if she shall, be it my proudest plume, not that I was the last to desert, but that I never deserted her. ~ Abraham Lincoln
Free Jazz quotes by Abraham Lincoln
Anarchism or freedom is the aim, while the state and dictatorship is the means, and so, in order to free the masses, they have first to be enslaved. ~ Mikhail Bakunin

Free Jazz quotes by Helen Gahagan Douglas
Might I make free with your lettuce, my lady? ~ Cassandra Clare
Free Jazz quotes by Cassandra Clare
While writing my memoir, 'When Skateboards Will Be Free,' I would sometimes have to pore over hours of microfilm at the New York Public Library in order to try to get one obscure detail right. For instance, was the Socialist Workers Party originally called the American Workers Party or the Workers Party of the United States? ~ Said Sayrafiezadeh
Free Jazz quotes by Said Sayrafiezadeh
The quickest way to become troubled is to be concerned with what people are gonna say about your life and your work. ~ Ahmad Jamal
Free Jazz quotes by Ahmad Jamal
When I finish my school work for the day, I like to go play basketball, ride my bike or skateboard, play video games, or go free running. ~ Max Charles
Free Jazz quotes by Max Charles
How clear, how lovely bright,
How beautiful to sight
Those beams of morning play;
How heaven laughs out with glee
Where, like a bird set free,
Up from the eastern sea
Soars the delightful day.

To-day I shall be strong,
No more shall yield to wrong,
Shall squander life no more;
Days lost, I know not how,
I shall retrieve them now;
Now I shall keep the vow
I never kept before.

Ensanguining the skies
How heavily it dies
Into the west away;
Past touch and sight and sound
Not further to be found,
How hopeless under ground
Falls the remorseful day. ~ A.E. Housman
Free Jazz quotes by A.E. Housman
We've been doing this here since 1968, so we have been identified as an example of a free, democratic school, and many professors want to expose their students to our philosophy. ~ Daniel Greenberg
Free Jazz quotes by Daniel Greenberg

Free Jazz quotes by Sam Harris

Free Jazz quotes by V.S. Naipaul

Free Jazz quotes by David Sedaris

Free Jazz quotes by Russell Page
The Hispanic community understands the American Dream and have not forgotten what they were promised - that in the U.S., a free market system, allows us all to succeed economically, achieve stability and security for your family and leave your children better off than yourselves. ~ Marco Rubio
Free Jazz quotes by Marco Rubio
In a society governed passively by free markets and free elections, organized greed always defeats disorganized democracy. ~ Matt Taibbi
Free Jazz quotes by Matt Taibbi
If you are not free to choose wrongly and irresponsibly, you are not free at all. ~ Jacob G. Hornberger
Free Jazz quotes by Jacob G. Hornberger
Don't do this to yourself," he said. "It's a cycle, Kate. We fight for the Pack, they fight for us. We bleed, they bleed. Sometimes people die. Everyone who came with me came of their own free will. The knew where we were going. They all knew there was a good chance that not everybody would make it out. This isn't the first fight or the last. People will sacrifice themselves for us again, and we'll do the same. I don't know how bad the future will be, but I promise you, we'll deal with it. You and I. Together. ~ Ilona Andrews
Free Jazz quotes by Ilona Andrews
Yes, take a little time to play And look at life the other way. God rested when the world was made: Rest now, old friend; be not afraid. But think not that your work is over, That you are now a foot-free rover, A rambler upon idle ways, Whittling away the golden days. For in the road climb to the goal There's no long furlough for a soul. There's no long pause: on every height Another summit swims in sight. The long road rises, scene by scene, With little restings in between. ~ Edwin Markham
Free Jazz quotes by Edwin Markham
To understand the New Testament we need to understand that religious past, in order to recognize what it is protesting against. Properly interpreting the New Testament - not as detached scholars but as followers of Jesus and his way - thus involves recognizing the redemptive trajectory it sets away from religious violence, and then continuing to develop and move forward along that same trajectory ourselves. In other words, we cannot stop at the place the New Testament got to, but must recognize where it was headed.

A clear example of this can be seen in the institution of slavery: The New Testament takes major steps away from slavery, encouraging slaves to gain their freedom if possible (1 Cor 7:21), counseling masters to treat their slaves as Christ treats them (Eph 6:9), and, most significantly, declaring that in Christ there is "no slave or free," that is, no concept of class or superiority (Gal 3:28).

While we can recognize here a movement away from slavery that set a trajectory which would eventually lead to the complete abolition of the institution of slavery centuries later, we do not see the New Testament directly condemning slavery or calling for its abolishment. Masters are not told to give up their slaves as Christians, but simply to treat them well. Slaves are not encouraged to participate in an "underground railroad" to gain their freedom, but instead are told to submit - even in the face of the cruelty, oppression, and violence that charact ~ Derek Flood
Free Jazz quotes by Derek Flood
I'm primarily thought of as a rocker, and certainly 'Frankenstein' had a very dramatic power rock image. It was almost a precursor of heavy metal and fusion. But I also love jazz and classical and if there's one common thread that runs through all my music, it is blues. ~ Edgar Winter
Free Jazz quotes by Edgar Winter
Society never progresses because the majority one day wakes up and says, "Let's do things differently." The majority didn't wake up and say, "Oh, let's just free the slaves." Society always progressed because a relatively small group of people usually considered outrageous radicals by the status quo of their time had a better idea and articulated another way. That's simply how evolution works; it's the mutation. The member of the species who does things differently - that points the way to the future because they're better adapted for survival. ~ Marianne Williamson
Free Jazz quotes by Marianne Williamson
I wish I didn't want the exotic man who knows the entire history of jazz, and instead wanted the teacher, who has his flaws but whose kindness is as rare as genius. ~ Merritt Tierce
Free Jazz quotes by Merritt Tierce
I am against the planned political assassinations by our intelligence and defense agents. The CIA-FBI-DIA and DISC (Defense Industry Security Command) were set up originally to protect citizens of the USA. They became their own judges and juries, private servants of corporations with investments at home and abroad. I am against the constant destruction of evidence in criminal matters and political assassinations. Prime witnesses are murdered before or after testifying. Diaries are forged and planted in obvious places. Doubles are created to confuse. The Police Departments manipulate facts in cooperation with conspirators. I am outraged that our judicial system since 1947 has been patterned after Nazi Germany. Patsies are dead or locked away. The assassins walk the streets or leave the country - "home free". I am against using the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Earl Warren, to cover up the assassination of President Kennedy. When the highest court is corrupt, there is no hope at local levels. ~ Mae Brussell
Free Jazz quotes by Mae Brussell
Virtually all the trends that matter are making a mockery of the industry's ritual incantations about the values and virtues of a free press in a free society. ~ Hodding Carter III
Free Jazz quotes by Hodding Carter III
Map Your Own Journey Go on your own journey. Don't let others hold you back; don't hold them back. Don't judge their journey, and don't let them judge yours. All persons are free to have the experiences their souls lead them to. ~ Melody Beattie
Free Jazz quotes by Melody Beattie
How many are we talking about? What percentage of females in Chicago are ready to have sex with you right now? What happens if one of them needs to travel? Do they have a phone tree? Is there a coverage plan or a backup plan for emergencies?"
Quinn covered the bottom half of his mouth with his free hand, too late to mask the smile, his shoulders started shaking with silent laughter.
I continued, feeling a little better knowing that he was able to laugh at himself, "Is there entry criteria? An established search committee? An interview process? Skills test? What kind of radius do you require? Do you have one circling the block now? Do you always keep one nearby? Was there one at the restaurant? At the bar maybe? ~ Penny Reid
Free Jazz quotes by Penny Reid
How wonderful it would be, I thought, if only we could practice the teachings of the Buddha as he really taught them from his own experience - free from the clouds of religiosity that often surround them Yet it's difficult to distinguish the tools themselves from their cultural packaging. ~ Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche
Free Jazz quotes by Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche
There are some of you here today who feel like dead people. It is as if you are already six feet under, staring up at the top of your own locked coffin. This morning Jesus wants to set you free. You simply have to let go of the key and pass it through the little hole, where you see a tiny shaft of light. ~ Sheila Walsh
Free Jazz quotes by Sheila Walsh
Joan Rivers broke down barriers, advocated for free speech, and never apologized for who she was. ~ Judy Gold
Free Jazz quotes by Judy Gold
He knew her, he believed. He would teach her that she was not his possession, he would show her she was free, he would see her flash her wings. ~ A.S. Byatt
Free Jazz quotes by A.S. Byatt
I've always let my imagination run free, but now I try to rein it in. Things never turn out the way I imagine, so I am letting them rest. Instead, I am holding just what is in my hand. ~ Anna White
