Leaving off her rock kicking, Daisy regarded Lillian with a frown. "I've been wondering…why are we so determined to marry into the peerage, and live in a huge crumbly old house and eat slimy English food, and try to give instructions to a bunch of servants who have absolutely no respect for us?"
"Because it's what Mother wants," Lillian replied dryly. "And because no one in New York will have either of us." It was an unfortunate fact that in the highly striated New York society, men with newly earned fortunes found it quite easy to marry well. But heiresses with common bloodlines were desired neither by the established blue bloods nor by the nouveau riche men who wanted to better themselves socially. Therefore, husband hunting in Europe, where upper-class men needed rich wives, was the only solution.
Daisy's frown twisted into an ironic grin. "What if no one will have us here either?"
"Then we'll become a pair of wicked old spinsters, romping back and forth across Europe. ~ Lisa Kleypas
English Food quotes by Lisa Kleypas
What we would think of as a beef animal had the double purpose of being a working or draught animal that could pull heavy loads. There is an old adage, "A year to grow, two years to plough and a year to fatten." The beef medieval people would have eaten would have been a maturer, denser meat than we are used to today. I have always longed to try it. The muscle acquired from a working ox would have broken down over the fattening year and provided wonderful fat covering and marbling. Given the amount of brewing that took place, the odds are that the animals would have been fed a little drained mash from time to time. Kobe beef, that excessively expensive Japanese beef, was originally obtained from ex-plough animals whose muscles were broken down by mash from sake production and by massage. I'd like to think our beef might have had a not dissimilar flavour. ~ Clarissa Dickson Wright
English Food quotes by Clarissa Dickson Wright
Remembering his creative exposition on the subject of purple-spotted dingy-dippers, Lillian gave a little huff of amusement. She had always considered Westcliff an utterly humorless man…and in that, she had misjudged him. "I thought you never lied," she said.
His lips twitched. "Given the options of seeing you become ill at the dinner table, or lying to get you out of there quickly, I chose the lesser of two evils. Do you feel better now?"
"Better…yes." Lillian realized that she was resting in the crook of his arm, her skirts draped partially over one of his thighs. His body was solid and warm, perfectly matched to hers. Glancing downward, she saw that the fabric of his trousers had molded firmly around his muscular thighs. Unladylike curiosity awakened inside her, and she clenched her fingers against the urge to slide her palm over his leg. "The part about the dingy-dipper was clever," she said, dragging her gaze up to his face. "But inventing a Latin name for it was positively inspired."
Westcliff grinned. "I always hoped my Latin would be good for something." Shifting her a little, he reached into the pocket of his waistcoat and glanced at his watch. "We'll return to the dining hall in approximately a quarter hour. By that time the calves' heads should be removed."
Lillian made a face. "I hate English food," she exclaimed. "All those jellies and blobs, and wiggly puddings, and the game that is aged until by the time it's served, it is older than I am ~ Lisa Kleypas
English Food quotes by Lisa Kleypas
One thing that I miss because we spend a lot of time in America is English food, like cooked breakfast and Sunday dinners. ~ Louis Tomlinson
English Food quotes by Louis Tomlinson
I was well warned about English food, so it did not surprise me, but I do wonder sometimes, how they ever manage to prise it up long enough to get a plate under it. ~ Margaret Halsey
English Food quotes by Margaret Halsey
Incidentally, although the Cistercians did much to improve the quality of sheep, the animal remained much smaller than its modern descendants; as late as the early eighteenth century a sheep wasn't much bulkier than a Labrador Dog. ~ Clarissa Dickson Wright
English Food quotes by Clarissa Dickson Wright
Wolsey and Henry VIII, it has to be said, were not exceptional in their love of the table. The English of Tudor times had a reputation throughout Europe for gluttony. Indeed, overeating was regarded as the English vice in the same way that lust was the French one and drunkenness that of the Germans (although looking at the amount of alcohol consumed in England, I expect the English probably ran a close second to the Germans). ~ Clarissa Dickson Wright
English Food quotes by Clarissa Dickson Wright
By the middle of Henry VIII's reign, the white meats - that is, dairy products - were considered common fare and people from all classes would eat meat whenever they could get it. ~ Clarissa Dickson Wright
English Food quotes by Clarissa Dickson Wright
The NRA was laying down its weapons. Yankee fans were rooting for the Boston Red Sox. The French were eating English food and loving it. Matthew was sure all those things were happening.... This was the proverbial cold day in hell, and Matthew was living it. ~ James Grippando
English Food quotes by James Grippando
I try to find a style that matches the book. In the Baroque Cycle, I got infected with the prose style of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, which is my favorite era. It's recent enough that it is easy to read - easier than Elizabethan English - but it's pre-Victorian and so doesn't have the pomposity that is often a problem with 19th-century English prose. It is earthy and direct and frequently hilarious. ~ Neal Stephenson
English Food quotes by Neal Stephenson
My favorite subject was either English or History. I had a really awesome high school education. ~ Ian Harding
English Food quotes by Ian Harding
Pecans are not cheap, my hons. In fact, in the South, the street value of shelled pecans just before holiday baking season is roughly that of crack cocaine. Do not confuse the two. It is almost impossible to make a decent crack cocaine tassie, I am told. ~ Celia Rivenbark
English Food quotes by Celia Rivenbark
I love Caribbean food. It's a great melting pot of so many cultures including the Native Americans. ~ Bob Greene
English Food quotes by Bob Greene
A person with passion will not look somewhere to see who is not doing it; they will focus and do what they can. ~ Israelmore Ayivor
English Food quotes by Israelmore Ayivor
Despite centuries of English literature, the most famous split infinitive in all of history comes from Star Trek. ~ R. Curtis Venture
English Food quotes by R. Curtis Venture
The English Channel is such a narrow little puddle, you cannot help wondering why no invader has succeeded in crossing it since 1066. ~ David Hewson
English Food quotes by David Hewson
I was an English major, so I love discussing possibilities and alternate theories. ~ William Mapother
English Food quotes by William Mapother
When it comes to seeing opportunities in the midst of unhopeful situations, the positive brain, (not the pair of eyes) is the sense organ for the sight. ~ Israelmore Ayivor
English Food quotes by Israelmore Ayivor
An anthropologist will not excitedly report of a newly discovered tribe: 'They eat food! They breathe air! They use tools! They tell each other stories!' We humans forget how alike we are, living in a world that only reminds us of our differences. ~ Eliezer Yudkowsky
English Food quotes by Eliezer Yudkowsky
The fact that most kids aren't eating at home with their families any more really means they are eating elsewhere. They are eating out there in fast food nation. ~ Alice Waters
English Food quotes by Alice Waters
You know what the problem is with world hunger? We've been sending them food. ~ Sam Kinison
English Food quotes by Sam Kinison

English Food quotes by Simone Elkeles
My mother accidentally gave me food poisoning. She fed me baby carrots for a snack before Christmas dinner - but they had expired in June! I threw up for the next 24 hours. ~ Busy Philipps
English Food quotes by Busy Philipps
Humans do not possess a single, focused will. In their hearts, they have countless bugs, buzzing in all directions. There are times when all these bugs pounce on the same food, but when they are focused on different desires, people take actions that can only be described as incoherent. ~ Kouhei Kadono
English Food quotes by Kouhei Kadono
And what do we do to fit our English-speaking Chinese, our docile and happy, our truly loyal servants, for the Asia of the future? We teach them English history: Henry the VIII, Elizabeth and Victoria, English geography, three-quarters of the book the British Isles, one quarter the rest of the world. literature, Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare and The Mill on the Floss, all in Basic, as they aren't to know the complexities of our tongue. We cut them from their own learning, their traditions; if that were cutting them off merely from the past, it wouldn't matter, but also and more dangerously, it cuts them from the present, and perhaps the future of Asia. With these happy eunuchs who are bound to us by their knowledge of English we run this country well as our colonial preserve. But we cannot pretend to think we can leave it to them to run it for themselves. All the revolutionaries in India were people who went back to their own literature and language. We'll see the same phenomenon here. ~ Han Suyin
English Food quotes by Han Suyin
Those who lift trophies of success are those who do what they do without stretching their necks to see "who else is doing what? ~ Israelmore Ayivor
English Food quotes by Israelmore Ayivor
I don't do the same food in Tokyo that I do in Vegas and vice versa. If I did that, two weeks later I would have no customers. ~ Alain Ducasse
English Food quotes by Alain Ducasse
If you don't have specific goals written down for your life, you are mentally malnourished. Your mind was designed to be fed with goals just as your body was designed to be fed with food and water. ~ Tommy Newberry
English Food quotes by Tommy Newberry
My favorite subject in high school was English. I love reading and writing, and I felt really supported in this subject, and my least favorite was math, since I felt completely lost. ~ Christie Laing
English Food quotes by Christie Laing
Big food companies flatter us by telling us how busy we are and they simultaneously convince us that we are helpless. I am moderately busy, but not all that helpless. Neither are you. ~ Jennifer Reese
English Food quotes by Jennifer Reese
Genes do not make you, any more than brain chemistry makes you hungry, food makes you breathe, breathing makes you die. ~ Johnny Rich
English Food quotes by Johnny Rich
You could probably get through life without knowing how to roast a chicken, but the question is, would you want to? ~ Nigella Lawson
English Food quotes by Nigella Lawson
A fisherman does not bait his hook with food he likes. He uses food the fish likes. So with boys. ~ Baden Powell De Aquino
English Food quotes by Baden Powell De Aquino
Any kind of food you eat is going to have an impact on the world. If you switch to tofu and get off meat, the soy bean is doing enormous damage in the Amazon and all throughout South America. ~ Michael Pollan
English Food quotes by Michael Pollan
I like food because you can change it. I mean, there is no such thing as a perfect lamb chop; you can make all types of lamb chops. And that's true of everything. And people eat it and it changes and disappears. ~ Claes Oldenburg
English Food quotes by Claes Oldenburg
If I want Italian and you want Japanese, why can't you compromise and have Italian?" my husband once said to me, redefining the word "compromise. ~ Nell Scovell
English Food quotes by Nell Scovell
Some nights he sat up late on his front porch with a glass of Jack and listened to the trucks heading south on 220, carrying crates of live chickens to the slaughterhouses - always under cover of darkness, like a vast and shameful trafficking - chickens pumped full of hormones that left them too big to walk - and he thought how these same chickens might return from their destination as pieces of meat to the floodlit Bojangles' up the hill from his house, and that meat would be drowned in the bubbling fryers by employees whose hatred of the job would leak into the cooked food, and that food would be served up and eaten by customers who would grow obese and end up in the hospital in Greensboro with diabetes or heart failure, a burden to the public, and later Dean would see them riding around the Mayodan Wal-Mart in electric carts because they were too heavy to walk the aisles of a Supercenter, just like hormone-fed chickens. ~ George Packer
English Food quotes by George Packer
It is a quaint comment on the notion that the English are practical and the French merely visionary, that we were rebels in arts while they were rebels in arms. ~ Gilbert K. Chesterton
English Food quotes by Gilbert K. Chesterton
I don't think I would have been great in the 17th century. I would have enjoyed the frocks, and certainly some of the food would have been appealing, but the disease and hygiene would have worried me. ~ Peter Capaldi
English Food quotes by Peter Capaldi
The pleasures of the table belong to all times and ages, to every country and every day; they go hand in hand with all our other pleasures, outlast them, and remain to console us for their loss. ~ Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin
English Food quotes by Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin
The food court sat right next to the movie theater. I needed something to drink. But like an idiot, I'd brought no money, not even my purse. Luke insisted that I leave it at home. Blah, blah, blah ... our first night to the movies together ... blah, blah, blah ... he would pay for everything ... blah, blah, blah ... he took me to see the worst movie ever ... ~ Katie McGarry
English Food quotes by Katie McGarry
I will not eat cakes or cookies or food. I will be thin, thin, pure. I will be pure and empty. Weight dropping off. Ninety-nine ... ninety-five ... ninety-two ... ninety. Just one more to eighty-nine. Where does it go? Where in the universe does it go? ~ Francesca Lia Block
English Food quotes by Francesca Lia Block
You're speaking English but I still don't get it," Tinker muttered. ~ Bella Street

English is the perfect language for preachers because it allows you to talk until you think of what to say. ~ Garrison Keillor
English Food quotes by Garrison Keillor
When you are grounded in the present - feeling your feelings, listening to your body, tasting your food, and expressing your ideas - you do not build up toxicity. You digest your experience as you go. ~ Debbie Ford
English Food quotes by Debbie Ford
Proper nutrition is one of the most fundamental things on which anyone's healthy and happy life can be based.
If you want to radically change your being for the better, to feel satisfied about who you are, or to look slim and attractive no matter what age is stated in your passport, start with changing unhealthy eating habits to healthy ones - and make them your favorites. ~ Sahara Sanders
English Food quotes by Sahara Sanders
As I got older, I started to cut out food that was bad for me. As I got wiser, I did the same with people. ~ Steve Maraboli
English Food quotes by Steve Maraboli
Peace prevails when food suffices ~ Momofuku Ando
English Food quotes by Momofuku Ando
Bouillabaisse, this golden soup, this incomparable golden soup which embodies and concentrates all the aromas of our shores and which permeates, like an ecstasy, the stomachs of astonished gastronomes. Bouillabaisse is one of those classic dishes whose glory has encircled the world, and the miracle consists of this: there are as many bouillabaisses as there are good chefs or cordon bleus. Each brings to his own version his special touch. ~ Curnonsky
English Food quotes by Curnonsky
Much of our Fear, is based in the fear of loss. We fear losing our own lives. We fear death for our family and friends. We fear the loss of our means of survival. In the Western World that's tied up in the way we make money to support ourselves and families. In many parts of the World, it's more basic: food and water. We fear violence, oppression. We fear others. ~ Steve Bivans
English Food quotes by Steve Bivans
What is the use of discussing a man's abstract right to food or medicine? The question is upon the method of procuring and administering them. In that deliberation I shall always advise to call in the aid of the farmer and the physician rather than the professor of metaphysics. ~ Edmund Burke
English Food quotes by Edmund Burke
A dark provider skimmed lazily along above them. As it swept over their heads, it cast forth food for them. ~ Robin Hobb
English Food quotes by Robin Hobb
The likelihood is that any English-speaking skier has more words for different types of snow than any inhabitant of Alaska or Greenland. ~ Larry Trask
