Lately, because computer technology has made self-publishing an easier and less expensive venture, I'm getting a lot of review copies of amateur books by writers who would be better advised to hone their craft before committing it to print. The best thing you can do as a beginning writer is to write, write, write - and read, read, read. Concentrating on publication prematurely is a mistake. You don't pick up a violin and expect to play Carnegie Hall within the year - yet somehow people forget that writing also requires technical skills that need to be learned, practiced, honed. If I had a dollar for every person I've met who thought, with no prior experience, they could sit down and write a novel and instantly win awards and make their living as a writer, I'd be a rich woman today. It's unrealistic, and it's also mildly insulting to professional writers who have worked hard to perfect their craft. Of course, then you hear stories about people like J.K. Rowling, who did sit down with no prior experience and write a worldwide best-seller...but such people are as rare as hen's teeth. Every day I work with talented, accomplished writers who have many novels in print and awards to their name and who are 'still' struggling to make a living. The thing I often find myself wanting to say to new writers is: Write because you love writing, learn your craft, be patient, and be realistic. Anais Nin said about writing, "It should be a necessity, as the sea needs to heave, and I call it bre ~ Terri Windling
Computer Technology quotes by Terri Windling
Meditation should be the foremost technology of the 21st century; the technology of reprogramming the non-spatial universal computer. ~ Kedar Joshi
Computer Technology quotes by Kedar Joshi
All of the biggest technological inventions created by man - the airplane, the automobile, the computer - says little about his intelligence, but speaks volumes about his laziness. ~ Mark Kennedy
Computer Technology quotes by Mark Kennedy
With each passing year, because of advances in computer technology, there are more things, each more sophisticated, that we aren't allowed to do any more. ~ Paul Lutus
Computer Technology quotes by Paul Lutus
The factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment. - WARREN G. BENNIS, ~ Timothy Ferriss
Computer Technology quotes by Timothy Ferriss
Similar to computer technology in the '60s, 3-D printing is a universal technology that has the potential to revolutionize our life by enabling individuals to design and manufacture things. ~ Hod Lipson
Computer Technology quotes by Hod Lipson
For the blue-collar worker, the driving force behind change was factory automation using programmable machine tools. For the office worker, it's office automation using computer technology: enterprise-resource-planning systems, groupware, intranets, extranets, expert systems, the Web, and e-commerce. ~ Tom Peters
Computer Technology quotes by Tom Peters
Long-term, we must begin to build our internal strengths. It isn't just skills like computer technology. It's the old-fashioned basics of self-reliance, self-motivation, self-reinforcement, self-discipline, self-command. ~ Steven Pressfield
Computer Technology quotes by Steven Pressfield
Technology is like a fish. The longer it stays on the shelf, the less desirable it becomes ~ Andrew Heller
Computer Technology quotes by Andrew Heller
Technology has come such a long way and you could pretty much do everything what's called 'in the box'. It means that it never has to leave your computer. ~ Tony Vincent
Computer Technology quotes by Tony Vincent
You must know your faith with the same precision with which a specialist in information technology knows the operating system of a computer. ~ Pope Benedict XVI
Computer Technology quotes by Pope Benedict XVI
When computers (people) are networked, their power multiplies geometrically. Not only can people share all that information inside their machines, but they can reach out and instantly tap the power of other machines (people), essentially making the entire network their computer. ~ Scott McNealy
Computer Technology quotes by Scott McNealy
The modern computer hovers between the obsolescent and the nonexistent. ~ Sydney Brenner
Computer Technology quotes by Sydney Brenner
I doubt that pornography has been good for the advancement of society, but I suspect it's done wonders for the advancement of computer technology. ~ Chuck Klosterman
Computer Technology quotes by Chuck Klosterman
...computer technology functions more as a new mode of transportation than as a new means of substantive communication. It moves information - lots of it, fast, and mostly in a calculating mode. The computer, in fact, makes possible the fulfillment of Descartes' dream of the mathematization of the world. Computers make it easy to convert facts into statistics and to translate problems into equations. And whereas this can be useful (as when the process reveals a pattern that would otherwise go unnoticed), it is diversionary and dangerous when applied indiscriminately to human affairs. ~ Neil Postman
Computer Technology quotes by Neil Postman
I think it is widely agreed that Carl Steinitz, over the 50 years he taught at Harvard, has been one of the most important figures in influencing the theory and practice of landscape architecture and the application of computer technology to planning. ~ Jack Dangermond
Computer Technology quotes by Jack Dangermond
A specter is haunting the modern world, the specter of crypto anarchy. Computer technology is on the verge of providing the ability for individuals and groups to communicate and interact with each other in a
totally anonymous manner. Two persons may exchange messages, conduct business, and negotiate electronic contracts without ever knowing the true name, or legal identity, of the other. Interactions over networks will be untraceable, via extensive rerouting of encrypted packets and tamper-proof boxes which implement cryptographic protocols with nearly perfect assurance against any tampering. Reputations will be of central importance, far more important in dealings than even the credit ratings of today. These developments will alter completely the nature of government regulation, the ability to tax and control economic interactions, the ability to keep information secret, and will even alter the nature of trust and reputation. ~ Peter Ludlow
Computer Technology quotes by Peter Ludlow
The brain processes information using 100,000 times less energy than we do right now with this computer technology that we have. ~ Kwabena Boahen
Computer Technology quotes by Kwabena Boahen
Nothing could be more misleading than the idea that computer technology introduced the age of information. The printing press began that age, and we have not been free of it since. ~ Neil Postman
Computer Technology quotes by Neil Postman
I'd like people to be educated on the voting machines, making sure that our democracy isn't being hijacked by computer technology. There's no reason there can't be a paper trail on those machines. ~ Eddie Vedder
Computer Technology quotes by Eddie Vedder
Advances in computer technology and the Internet have changed the way America works, learns, and communicates. The Internet has become an integral part of America's economic, political, and social life ~ William J. Clinton
Computer Technology quotes by William J. Clinton
We already knew that kids learned computer technology more easily than adults, It is as if children were waiting all these centuries for someone to invent their native language. ~ Jaron Lanier
Computer Technology quotes by Jaron Lanier
All sorts of computer errors are now turning up. You'd be surprised to know the number of doctors who claim they are treating pregnant men. ~ Isaac Asimov
Computer Technology quotes by Isaac Asimov
The IT people who have made such an effort to know and understand computer technology. They are frustrated that you cannot use Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in China. They are the first to recognize that the situation is terrible. ~ Ai Weiwei
Computer Technology quotes by Ai Weiwei
It would appear that we have reached the limits of what it is possible to achieve with computer technology, although one should be careful with such statements, as they tend to sound pretty silly in 5 years. ~ John Von Neumann
Computer Technology quotes by John Von Neumann
I'm really hopeless with technology - I don't even have a computer. ~ Ben Whishaw
Computer Technology quotes by Ben Whishaw
And I make no apology for linking my thinking with computer technology. ~ Maxwell Frazer
Computer Technology quotes by Maxwell Frazer
But before a computer became an inanimate object, and before Mission Control landed in Houston; before Sputnik changed the course of history, and before the NACA became NASA; before the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka established that separate was in fact not equal, and before the poetry of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech rang out over the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Langley's West Computers were helping America dominate aeronautics, space research, and computer technology, carving out a place for themselves as female mathematicians who were also black, black mathematicians who were also female. ~ Margot Lee Shetterly
Computer Technology quotes by Margot Lee Shetterly
I have long been alarmed by people's sheeplike acceptance of the term 'computer technology' - it sounds so objective and inexorable - when most computer technology is really a bunch of ideas turned into conventions and packages. ~ Ted Nelson
Computer Technology quotes by Ted Nelson
That's the thing about people who think they hate computers. What they really hate is lousy programmers. ~ Larry Niven
Computer Technology quotes by Larry Niven
What is clear is that, to date, computer technology has served to strengthen Technopoly's hold, to make people believe that technological innovation is synonymous with human progress. ~ Neil Postman
Computer Technology quotes by Neil Postman
But lo! men have become the tools of their tools. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Computer Technology quotes by Henry David Thoreau
I am not the only person who uses his computer mainly for the purpose of diddling with his computer. ~ Dave Barry
Computer Technology quotes by Dave Barry
What's happened with computer technology is perfectly timed for someone with my set of skills. I tell stories with pictures. What I love about CGI is that if I can think it, it can be put on the screen. ~ Frank Miller
Computer Technology quotes by Frank Miller
The traditions of Hollywood are grand and great and are going to survive forever, in a way. But they're not going to be the only way for much longer. The technology is such now that you don't have to have millions of dollars to make a movie. You can make one with a computer. ~ Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Computer Technology quotes by Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Professor Dawkins himself stated that "Religion is about turning untested belief, into unshakable truth through the power of institutions, and the passage of time." This is exactly what is happening with his meme conjecture. He is taking an untestable idea, by scientific standards, and through media and literature and a popular cult following, creating it into a social norm of truth where others believe his idea and propagate it as an unshakeable truth. This also is occurring faster because of computer technology in time. But nonetheless, it is an occurrence within a passage of time. ~ Idav Kelly
Computer Technology quotes by Idav Kelly
This technology will obviously become more prevalent. Who knows what will result? One thing is certain, computer technology will revolutionize the way we tell stories as much as movie film has. ~ Chris Wedge
Computer Technology quotes by Chris Wedge
Man is still the most extraordinary computer of all. ~ John F. Kennedy
Computer Technology quotes by John F. Kennedy
The amount of improvement that has occurred in computer technology in the past half century is truly staggering and unprecedented in other industries. ... If cars had improved at this rate in the same time period, a Rolls Royce would now cost 10 dollars and get a billion miles per gallon. (Unfortunately, it would probably also have a 200-page manual telling how to open the door.) ~ Andrew S. Tanenbaum
Computer Technology quotes by Andrew S. Tanenbaum
In our day, computer technology and the proliferation of books on CD-ROM have not affected - as far as statistics show - the production and sale of books in their old-fashioned codex form. ~ Alberto Manguel
Computer Technology quotes by Alberto Manguel
What a computer is to me is the most remarkable tool that we have ever come up with. It's the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds. ~ Steve Jobs
Computer Technology quotes by Steve Jobs
The computer offers another kind of creativity. You cannot ignore the creativity that computer technology can bring. But you need to be able to move between those two different worlds. ~ Tadao Ando
Computer Technology quotes by Tadao Ando
Attend any conference on telecommunications or computer technology, and you will be attending a celebration of innovative machinery that generates, stores, and distributes more information, more conveniently, at greater speed than ever before, To the question "What problem does the information solve?" the answer is usually "How to generate, store and distribute more information, more conveniently, at greater speeds than ever before." This is the elevation of information to a metaphysical status: information as both the means and end of human creativity. In Technopoly, we are driven to fill our lives with the quest to "access" information. For what purpose or with what limitations, it is not for us to ask; and we are not accustomed to asking, since the problem is unprecedented. The world has never before been confronted with information glut and has hardly had time to reflect on its consequences (61). ~ Neil Postman
Computer Technology quotes by Neil Postman
Technology is such a broad kind of term, it really applies to so many things, from the electric light to running cars on oil. All of these different things can be called technology. I have kind of a love-hate relationship with it, as I expect most people do. With the computer, I spend so many hours sitting in front of a computer. ~ Jeff Bridges
Computer Technology quotes by Jeff Bridges
Who is Baine?" Nella asked.
"My computer," Dr. Laas said. "A man I had an affair with programmed the voice in before he left. I told him to go, you see, and this was his revenge. Baine sounds just like him."
"Do not insult me," Baine answered. " I am a thousand times superior to your fly-by-night lover. He is now in jail on Station 1217, by the way, for indecent exposure."
"Really?" Dr. Laas brightened. "How delightful. ~ Allyson James
Computer Technology quotes by Allyson James
And we were in our thirties. Well into the Age of Boredom, when nothing is new. Now, I'm not being self-pitying; it's simply true. Newness, or whatever you want to call it, becomes a very scarce commodity after thirty. I think that's unfair. If I were in charge of the human life span, I'd make sure to budget newness much more selectively, to ration it out. As it is now, it's almost used up in the first three years of life. By then you've seen for the first time, tasted for the first time, held something for the first time. Learned to walk, talk, go to the bathroom. What have you got to look forward to that can compare with that? Sure, there's school. Making friends. Falling in love. Learning to drive. Sex. Learning to trade. That has to carry you for the next twenty-five years. But after that? What's the new excitement? Mastering your home computer? Figuring out how to work CompuServe? "Now, if it were up to me, I'd parcel out. So that, say, at thirty-five we just learned how to go on the potty. Imagine the feeling of accomplishment! They'd have office parties. "Did you hear? The vice president in charge of overseas development just went a whole week without his diaper. We're buying him a gift." It'd be beautiful. ~ Phoef Sutton
Computer Technology quotes by Phoef Sutton
I long ago became convinced that the most reliable source for arcane and obscure and seemingly unobtainable information does not lie with the government or law enforcement agencies. Apparently neither the CIA nor the military intelligence apparatus inside the Pentagon had even a slight inkling of the Soviet Union's impending collapse, right up to the moment the Kremlin's leaders were trying to cut deals for their memoirs with New York publishers. Or, if a person really wishes a lesson in the subjective nature of official information, he can always call the IRS and ask for help with his tax forms, then call back a half hour later and ask the same questions to a different representative. So where do you go to find a researcher who is intelligent, imaginative, skilled in the use of computers, devoted to discovering the truth, and knowledgeable about science, technology, history, and literature, and who usually works for dirt and gets credit for nothing? After lunch I drove to the city library on Main and asked the reference librarian to find what she could on Junior Crudup. ~ James Lee Burke
Computer Technology quotes by James Lee Burke
I point out to you, Marcus Claire Luyseyal, a lesson from past over-machined societies which you appear not to have learned. The devices themselves condition the
users to employ each other the way they employ machines. ~ Frank Herbert
Computer Technology quotes by Frank Herbert
The sixth member of the crew cared for none of these things, for it was not human. It was the highly advanced HAL 9000 computer, the brain and nervous system of the ship. ~ Arthur C. Clarke
Computer Technology quotes by Arthur C. Clarke
I work in comedy, journalism, media, and technology, many of which don't have a lot of black faces in visible positions. I walk through Brooklyn with a surfboard. It's fun to challenge and expand people's expectations. ~ Baratunde Thurston
Computer Technology quotes by Baratunde Thurston
You have to take a broader view and realize this is an industry like any other - telecoms, Railroads; they went through consolidation. Why shouldn't the computer industry be any different? This shouldn't have been a surprise to anybody but it seemed to be, and a lot of people thought I was nuts when I said these things. And that's why they are alone as a consolidator. ~ Larry Ellison
Computer Technology quotes by Larry Ellison
We are not cave dwellers anymore, we live in the age of technology. When someone needs a car, he does not need to build it. He can buy it. When someone needs a murder, he himself does not need to kill. He can order it. ~ Friedrich Durrenmatt
Computer Technology quotes by Friedrich Durrenmatt
In this business, I find more value in working with hackers who abstract new realities from cast aside code and concepts than academics who regurgitate other people's work and try to pawn it off as their own. ~ James Scott, Senior Fellow, Institute For Critical Infrastructure Technology
Computer Technology quotes by James Scott, Senior Fellow, Institute For Critical Infrastructure Technology
I built Rubicon from ashes,' said the other man. 'Ashes of war. I have worked hard to raise myself up from the poverty I was born into. Believe me when I tell you I have seen every kind of injustice, all across the heartland of my mother Africa. And now I have made billions of dollars from land and mining and technology. Now I can do something about it. As Lucy says, I am a very rich man.' He reached up to his neck and pulled out the silver chain between his fingers. 'I see you looking at this. Do you recognize it?'
Marc gave a slow nod. Now it was clear to him, he could see that the odd bit of discoloured metal was actually part of a weapon. It was the trigger from an AK-47 assault rifle. ~ James Swallow
Computer Technology quotes by James Swallow
P15 - Our advanced technological society is rapidly making objects of us and subtly programming us into conformity to the logic of its system to the degree that this happens, we are also becoming submerged in a new "Culture of Silence". ~ Paulo Freire
Computer Technology quotes by Paulo Freire
When you agree to help one person, you ultimately have to disappoint someone else; it's like a karmic law. ~ Katie Kacvinsky
Computer Technology quotes by Katie Kacvinsky
They thought, for example, that I really ought to know the name Intel because "it's written on every computer." I, of course, had never noticed. ~ Paulo Coelho
Computer Technology quotes by Paulo Coelho
Rife's key realization was that there's no difference between modern culture and Sumerian. We have a huge workforce that is illiterate or alliterate and relies on TV-which is sort of an oral tradition. And we have a small, extremely literate power elite-the people who go into the Meatverse, basically-who understand that information is power, and who control society because they have this semimystical ability to speak magic computer languages. ~ Neal Stephenson
Computer Technology quotes by Neal Stephenson
The field of U.S. cancer care is organized around a medical monopoly that ensures a continuous flow of money to the pharmaceutical companies, medical technology firms, research institutes, and government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and quasi-public organizations such as the American Cancer Society (ACS). ~ John Diamond
Computer Technology quotes by John Diamond
The digital artwork is characterized not by the technology which delivers it, but by the "passage" itself. ~ Masha Tupitsyn
Computer Technology quotes by Masha Tupitsyn
Overregulation stifles creativity. It smothers innovation. It gives dinosaurs a veto over the future. It wastes the extraordinary opportunity for a democratic creativity that digital technology enables. ~ Lawrence Lessig
Computer Technology quotes by Lawrence Lessig
As technology enables us to upgrade humans, overcome old age and find the key to happiness, won't people care less about fictional gods, nations and corporations, and focus instead on deciphering the physical and biological reality? It might seem so, but in fact things are far more complicated. Modern science certainly changed the rules of the game, yet it did not simply replace myths with facts. Myths continue to dominate humankind, and science only makes these myths stronger. Instead of destroying the intersubjective reality, science will enable it to control the objective and subjective realities more completely than ever before. Thanks to computers and bioengineering, the difference between fiction and reality will blur, as people reshape reality to match their pet fictions. ~ Yuval Noah Harari
Computer Technology quotes by Yuval Noah Harari
With the egoic consciousness having become so dysfunctional, and now having at our disposal all these enormous technologies and scientific advances, if nothing changes the ego will use those things - as it already has been doing - and will amplify the technology that we now have. The scientific advances, to a large extent, will be used in the service of the ego, and they will become more and more destructive. ~ Eckhart Tolle
Computer Technology quotes by Eckhart Tolle
Madame Lefoux shrugged. I do not know about that, my lady. I mean to say, one's life is one thing; one's technology is an entirely different matter. ~ Gail Carriger
Computer Technology quotes by Gail Carriger
It is the Far Right today that establishes the terms of the nuclear debate. And in this context, in a room ringing with hysterical pleas on behalf of Reagan's eerie laser-beam technology, the MacBundys of the world seem eminently, refreshingly sane. ~ David Talbot
Computer Technology quotes by David Talbot
Eventually, I believe, current attempts to understand the mind by analogy with man-made computers that can perform superbly some of the same external tasks as conscious beings will be recognized as a gigantic waste of time. ~ Thomas Nagel
Computer Technology quotes by Thomas Nagel
I really like to write, so I can just relax and think about things and realize things and then try to express it on my computer. ~ Krist Novoselic
Computer Technology quotes by Krist Novoselic
That work led to the emergence of the recombinant DNA technology thereby providing a major tool for analyzing mammalian gene structure and function and formed the basis for me receiving the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. ~ Paul Berg
Computer Technology quotes by Paul Berg
Technology is the fashion of the '90s. It affects everyone, and everyone is interested in it - either from fear of being left behind or because they have a real need to use technology. ~ Jay Chiat
Computer Technology quotes by Jay Chiat
Science and technology can solve all the world's problems, and historically it has been shown to make the world better and better. ~ Zoltan Istvan
Computer Technology quotes by Zoltan Istvan
Men and women are sacrificed to the idols of profit and consumption: it is the 'culture of waste.' If a computer breaks it is a tragedy, but poverty, the needs and dramas of so many people end up being considered normal ... When the stock market drops 10 points in some cities, it constitutes a tragedy. Someone who dies is not news, but lowering income by 10 points is a tragedy! In this way people are thrown aside as if they were trash. ~ Pope Francis
Computer Technology quotes by Pope Francis
The indigenous peoples never had, and still do not have, the place that they should have occupied in the progress and benefits of science and technology, although they represented an important basis for this development. ~ Rigoberta Menchu
Computer Technology quotes by Rigoberta Menchu
There had never been a Class A1 event; it had always been a purely theoretical designation. Until now. ~ A. Ashley Straker
Computer Technology quotes by A. Ashley Straker
We are not as strong as technology's pull. ~ Sherry Turkle
Computer Technology quotes by Sherry Turkle
Some of the greatest discoveries ... consist mainly in the clearing away of psychological roadblocks which obstruct the approach to reality; which is why, post factum they appear so obvious. ~ Arthur Koestler
Computer Technology quotes by Arthur Koestler
The silences express so much and are so crucial in music, and prose does not allow for the creation of these silences, these white spaces on the page or the computer screen. ~ Pattiann Rogers
Computer Technology quotes by Pattiann Rogers
Whereas with us - what you hear is what's happening right then and there on the stage - so we don't need no stinking technology. ~ James Young
Computer Technology quotes by James Young
It's easier to make up sayings people like to hear than sayings they like to heed. ~ Larry Wall
Computer Technology quotes by Larry Wall
I send him an email back informing him that since this is his nineteenth relative in grave danger, he needs to either consult a tantric to remove a curse on his family or to simply stop lying to take extra days off. I shut my computer and hurriedly get ready to reach the office. ~ Twinkle Khanna
Computer Technology quotes by Twinkle Khanna
Information technology is at the core of how you do your business and how your business model itself evolves. ~ Satya Nadella
Computer Technology quotes by Satya Nadella
I don't know much about technology anymore. ~ John McAfee
Computer Technology quotes by John McAfee
Sporting competitions seem to be what we obsess over, frankly. So if we can put engineering, science, technology into a format of healthy, fun competition, we can attract all sorts of kids that might not see the kind of activity we do as accessible or rewarding. ~ Dean Kamen
