I keep up with everything in terms of health, fitness, nutrition, skin care, hair, nails. Really, everything. I'm an avid reader of every women's health newsletter from every hospital in the country. ~ Evelyn Lauder
Avid Reader quotes by Evelyn Lauder
Lately she can read a novel in two hours. She has always been an avid reader, but these days she can read much faster. The colors, the conversations, everything is much more vibrant and inclusive, as if opening a book releases genies trapped inside. The scenes and people between their covers sometimes seem more vivid than real life, with their sunny, pearl-toothed characters, the witty conversation, the handsome stranger squeezed into a subway car or knocking about on the street. Sometimes, when she finishes a book at record speed, Dana feels a slight letdown, as if a good friend has hung up the phone in the middle of a conversation. ~ Susan H. Crawford
Avid Reader quotes by Susan H. Crawford
I was still an avid reader of Mills & Boon romances - on publication day, I used to rush out of work to get to the local book store to grab my favourites before they all disappeared. ~ Penny Jordan
Avid Reader quotes by Penny Jordan
Her ticket to freedom lay in her lap. Ever an avid reader, Annie had escaped into books in recent months, when all else failed to calm her. As a friend, a book had advantages over the human variety. It was there whenever she needed it, it vanished as easily, and it never asked questions, expected witty replies, made awkward suggestions, or otherwise overcompensated for its own inability to right the wrongs of the world. ~ Barbara Delinsky
Avid Reader quotes by Barbara Delinsky
Jackson turned his left hand up and gazed down at the simple black tattoo on the inside of his wrist. He was silent for a long time, then looked up and met my eyes.
He said, "You're an avid reader. You know the meaning of semicolon."
I frowned. "It's when the author could have ended a sentence but chose not to."
"Exactly."
"I don't understand."
Jackson looked deep into my eyes. His smile might have been the saddest thing I'd ever seen. He said softly, "I'm the author, and the sentence is my life. ~ J.T. Geissinger
Avid Reader quotes by J.T. Geissinger
More than 3,500 hardcover novels are published each year. Even the most avid reader buys fewer than one a week. ~ M.J. Rose
Avid Reader quotes by M.J. Rose
If you are an avid reader that loves to discover new books and authors, Kindle Unlimited is going to provide you an amazing deal. ~ Edward Franklin
Avid Reader quotes by Edward Franklin
Just because you're an avid reader doesn't mean you're an avid understander. ~ Alec Sulkin
Avid Reader quotes by Alec Sulkin
Two of my three siblings are older, so I suppose I learned from them and became a very avid reader at a young age, which I think enough cannot be said for what you can discover through literature. ~ Julia Roberts
Avid Reader quotes by Julia Roberts
My mother was an avid reader ... She loved books about romance. Books that took place in faraway places and times. Stories with costumes ... ~ Adriana Trigiani
Avid Reader quotes by Adriana Trigiani
I think the church has done a pretty good job at reaching the "down and outers" but not a good job at reaching the "up and outers." I feel like one of my mandates is to reach corporate America with a message that relates to them. As an avid reader, I realized that the church at large was not speaking the language of corporate America or strategically to the needs of a corporate man/woman. ~ Keith Craft
Avid Reader quotes by Keith Craft
From early on there were two things that filled my life - music and storytelling, both of them provoked by my father. He was a jazz pianist and also a very good storyteller, an avid reader. He passed both those interests on to me. ~ Athol Fugard
Avid Reader quotes by Athol Fugard
Hitler was an avid reader, a passion that stayed with him through all the phases of his career. ~ Volker Ullrich
Avid Reader quotes by Volker Ullrich
I was always an avid reader of books. My vocabulary, my English are all thanks to that reading habit. Reading keeps me grounded. I came from a very middle class family - poor, in fact. ~ Madhur Bhandarkar
Avid Reader quotes by Madhur Bhandarkar
I am an avid reader of comics, though I came to them late. ~ Nick Harkaway
Avid Reader quotes by Nick Harkaway
I've always been an avid reader. Everyone in my family read a lot. Considering we were from a little town, we were pretty literate. ~ John Malkovich
Avid Reader quotes by John Malkovich
I'm an avid reader myself, and what any one reader accesses at any one time is very powerful and personal to them. Clearly you can't even begin to touch that. A novel is a singular vision, and then a myriad of readers have their own experience of that. ~ Darren Boyd
Avid Reader quotes by Darren Boyd
I have always been an avid reader of chemical literature, eager for what is new. ~ Yves Chauvin
Avid Reader quotes by Yves Chauvin
Poets must be grounded in the education of the arts, drama, history, mysticism, esotericism, and philosophy. To gain knowledge and become learned of the above is easy - read. Poets should apply this knowledge to their work, so a poet will advance to the next level, to their next phase of their emotional, psychological and spiritual development, growing in years in a short space of time, in hours or months if he or she is an avid reader. This knowledge will birth work that is not meretricious but of noble parentage. ~ Abigail George
Avid Reader quotes by Abigail George
I have been an avid reader since my youth. Because I also liked to play tabletop games, I soon felt the desire to make the story narrated in a book or an aspect of that story come alive in a game. ~ Klaus Teuber
Avid Reader quotes by Klaus Teuber
I've always loved books. I was an avid reader, with any number of my own stories rolling around in my head. Writing them down seemed a logical step. ~ Kat Martin
Avid Reader quotes by Kat Martin
Hank Nearly was an avid reader. He arrived early in his brown corduroy coat, with a book taken from the library, copied all the pages on the Xerox machine, and sat at his desk reading what looked passebly like the honest pages of business. He's make it through a three-hundred-page novel every two or three days. ~ Joshua Ferris
Avid Reader quotes by Joshua Ferris
I was an avid reader, but never thought seriously about writing a novel until I was in my thirties. I took no formal fiction-writing courses and never thought about these categories when I wrote my first novel. ~ M.J. Rose
Avid Reader quotes by M.J. Rose
Shara was already an avid reader by then, but she had never realized until that moment what books meant, the possibility they presented: you could protect them forever, store them up like engineers store water, endless resources of time and knowledge snared in ink, tied down to paper, layered on shelves ... Moments made physical, untouchable, perfect, like preserving a dead hornet in crystal, one drop of venom forever hanging from its stinger.
She felt overwhelmed. It was
she briefly thinks of herself and Vo, reading together in the library
a lot like being in love for the first time. ~ Robert Jackson Bennett
Avid Reader quotes by Robert Jackson Bennett
I'm an avid reader. Novels, non-fiction, comics, it doesn't matter. Best way in the world to feed your head. ~ Reid Scott
Avid Reader quotes by Reid Scott
I'm a compulsive storyteller, an avid reader, and have always nurtured the secret goal of spending my life as a writer. ~ Astro Teller
Avid Reader quotes by Astro Teller
Books are portals for the imagination, whether one is reading or writing, and unless one is keeping a private journal, writing something that no one is likely to read is like trying to have a conversation when you're all alone. Readers extend and enhance the writer's created work, and they deepen the colors of it with their own imagination and life experiences. In a sense, there's a revision every time one's words are read by someone else, just as surely as there is whenever the writer edits. Nothing is finished or completely dead until both sides quit and it's no longer a part of anyone's thoughts. So it seems almost natural that a lifelong avid reader occasionally wants to construct a mindscape from scratch after wandering happily in those constructed by others. If writing is a collaborative communication between author and reader, then surely there's a time and a place other than writing reviews for readers to 'speak' in the human literary conversation. ~ P.J. O'Brien
Avid Reader quotes by P.J. O'Brien
My father wrote beautifully," Esmé interrupted. "I'm saving a number of his letters for posterity."
I said that sounded like a very good idea. I happened to be looking at her enormous-faced, chrono-graphic-looking wristwatch again. I asked if it had belonged to her father.
She looked down at her wrist solemnly. "Yes, it did," she said. "He gave it to me just before Charles and I were evacuated." Self-consciously, she took her hand off the table, saying, "Purely as a momento, of course." She guided the conversation in a different direction. "I'd be extremely flattered if you'd write a story exclusively for me sometime. I'm an avid reader."
I told her I certainly would, if I could. I said that I wasn't terribly prolific.
"It doesn't have to be terribly prolific! Just so that isn't childish and silly." She reflected. "I prefer stories about squalor."
"About what?" I said, leaning forward.
"Squalor. I'm extremely interested in squalor. ~ J.D. Salinger
Avid Reader quotes by J.D. Salinger
Ever since I could remember reading, I was a fan of Horror Novels, then just an Avid reader of all things dark and deeply written or off the cuff styles and not so bland and sterile as if the grammar police forensically wrote it to be safe, then re-edited it to be even more annoyingly not from an emotion but from a text book, I love dark dark fiction that's why i write it. Some of my favorite writers are Anne Rice, Hunter S. Thompson and Clive Barker, perhaps you can sense this in my writing. ~ Liesalette
Avid Reader quotes by Liesalette
When I grow up, maybe I will be
the first one to circle the sea.
Or maybe I will just spend all my day
doing everything my way.
Maybe I will be in a world of my own
I just hope not alone.
I just know that whatever I do
I will never, ever forget about you. ~ Oliver Neubert
Avid Reader quotes by Oliver Neubert
A good writer is also an avid reader. A good reader is also a vivid dreamer. A good dreamer is also a good learner. And a good learner is definitely a good listener. A good listener is always looking to what the heart speaks. A spoken heart talks directly to a silent soul. And a silent soul is most of the time in pace with a peaceful thought. A peaceful thought is also a good writer... ~ Ana Claudia Antunes
Avid Reader quotes by Ana Claudia Antunes
I was an avid reader of futurists during the 1970s and '80s. They were so wrong - about everything. ~ Hermann E. Ott
Avid Reader quotes by Hermann E. Ott
First, I'd become an avid reader of blogs, especially music blogs, and they seemed to be where the critical-thinking action was at, to have the kind of energy that I associate with rock writing of the 1970s or Internet e-mail discussion lists a decade ago. ~ Carl Wilson
Avid Reader quotes by Carl Wilson
...as a child, I was an avid reader. And despite reading hundreds of books about straight people, I did not grow up to embrace the heterosexual lifestyle. Similarly, someone who is heterosexual is not going to turn gay from reading a book that features a child being raised by two moms. ~ Leslea Newman
Avid Reader quotes by Leslea Newman
I am an avid reader. ~ June Squibb
Avid Reader quotes by June Squibb
But I was, and still am, an avid reader and so when I first started I chose to photograph many of the great writers in this country to try and earn a living. ~ Fay Godwin
Avid Reader quotes by Fay Godwin
With science becoming far more accessible to all of us, I've become a pretty avid reader and devourer of it. One of the objectives that I had working with Fringe was to get more people talking about it because it's such fun. ~ John Noble
Avid Reader quotes by John Noble
I have been an avid reader of 'Golf Digest' ever since I started playing this great game. ~ Paula Creamer
Avid Reader quotes by Paula Creamer
As time passed I became an avid reader of popular scientific books, wanting to know as much as I could about the world in which I lived. Gradually I began to see a pattern of nonsense in much scientific writing. Scientific explanations given regarding the origins or functioning of various phenomena simply didn't make sense. ~ Vine Deloria Jr.
Avid Reader quotes by Vine Deloria Jr.
I was an avid reader of Surf Life magazine, and I was surprised to discover a write-up of our Tasmanian visit. It made me proud to read how impressed those guys were with Steve's surfing abilities. One incident that didn't make the article was when Steve came partway to shore while I watched him from the beach. All of a sudden he stripped off his wet suit. It was winter and quite cold.
"What are you doing?" I called out.
He stood in the icy water. "This is how dedicated I am to having a boy baby," he said, with a mischievous grin.
I said, "I think you're just supposed to keep them cool, not actually freeze them off."
He laughed. But I knew this was Steve's way of encouraging me to stick to the boy-baby diet. Did I mention that I could not eat chocolate? The sacrifices we make for love. ~ Terri Irwin
Avid Reader quotes by Terri Irwin
Now lend me your ears. Here is Creative Writing 101:

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
4. Every sentence must do one of two things - reveal character or advance the action.
5. Start as close to the end as possible.
6. Be a sadist. No matter sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them - in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.
8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

The greatest American short story writer of my generation was Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964). She broke practically every one of my rules but the first. Great writers tend to do that. ~ Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Avid Reader quotes by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
With a novel, you're the director and the screenwriter and everything else, except that you have to write it knowing it will all be performed inside the head of the reader. So it's a difficult and lonely task. ~ Jason Henderson
Avid Reader quotes by Jason Henderson
The main thing about the novel that is totally fascinating: It's not possessed by the writer; it's possessed by the reader. ~ Jane Smiley
Avid Reader quotes by Jane Smiley
As a reader, coming to my reading as a writer immersed in fairytales, I can't help but notice in so many stories, plays, poems that I read, the sort of breadcrumbs of fairytale techniques, so I'm very excited when I notice that. ~ Kate Bernheimer
Avid Reader quotes by Kate Bernheimer
We're told by TV and Reader's Digest that a crisis will trigger massive personal change
and that those big changes will make the pain worthwhile. But from what he could see, big change almost never happens. People simply feel lost. They have no idea what to say or do or feel or think. they become messes and tend to remain messes. ~ Douglas Coupland
Avid Reader quotes by Douglas Coupland
The most difficult part of writing a book is not devising a plot which will captivate the reader. It's not developing characters the reader will have strong feelings for or against. It is not finding a setting which will take the reader to a place he or she as never been. It is not the research, whether in fiction or non-fiction. The most difficult task facing a writer is to find the voice in which to tell the story. ~ Randy Pausch
Avid Reader quotes by Randy Pausch
The press today is an army with carefully organized weapons, the journalists its officers, the readers its soldiers. The reader neither knows nor is supposed to know the purposes for which he is used and the role he is to play. ~ Oswald Spengler
Avid Reader quotes by Oswald Spengler
I like a text that reminds the reader its a text sometimes. ~ Rob Roberge
Avid Reader quotes by Rob Roberge
That writer does the most who gives his reader the most knowledge and takes from him the least time. ~ Charles Caleb Colton
Avid Reader quotes by Charles Caleb Colton
The ways in which a book, once read, stays (and changes) in the reader's mind are unpredictable. ~ Julian Barnes
Avid Reader quotes by Julian Barnes
When the venture has been made of dealing with historical events and characters, it always seems fair towards the reader to avow what liberties have been taken, and how much of the sketch is founded on history. ~ Charlotte Mary Yonge
Avid Reader quotes by Charlotte Mary Yonge
The life we led was a proof of man's capacity for adaptation.I think that even the condemned souls in purgatory after time develop a sort of homely routine. That is ,by the way, why most prison memoirs are unreadable. The difficulty of conveying to the reader an idea of a nightmare world from which he has emerged makes the author depict the prisoner's state of mind as an uninterruped continuity of despair. He fears to appear frivolous or to spoil his effect by admitting that even in the depths of misery cheerfulness keeps breaking in. ~ Arthur Koestler
Avid Reader quotes by Arthur Koestler
Novels are a kind of experiment in selfhood, for the reader as well as for the author. ~ Jonathan Dee
Avid Reader quotes by Jonathan Dee
For if there were a list of cosmic things that unite us, reader and writer, visible as it scrolled up into the distance, like the introduction to some epic science-fiction film, then shining brightly on that list would be the fact that we exist in a financial universe that is subject to massive gravitational pulls from states. States tug at us. States bend us. And, tirelessly, states seek to determine our orbits. ~ Mohsin Hamid
Avid Reader quotes by Mohsin Hamid
The Golden Bough captured the imagination of many artists in the early twentieth century. Eliot, certainly, was immersed in it, discussing it familiarly in his graduate school papers and book reviews and constantly alluding to it in his art. The most straightforward advice he offers to readers of The Waste Land (given in the notes to the poem) is, in paraphrase, that any serious reader of the poem must take into consideration modern scholarship in myth and anthropology, especially Frazer Golden Bough and Jessie Weston From Ritual to Romance. The poet says that he is indebted to this scholarship for his title, his plan, his symbolism, and many of his references to ancient religion and society. His claim about the title, taken from the monomyth of Frazer and Weston, his claim about the symbolism, associated with the birth-death-rebirth cycles of the myths, and his claim about the miscellaneous undergirding references have been discussed by Grover Smith and other scholars. We wish to focus more on Eliot's claim about being indebted to Frazer for the plan of the poem. We believe it refers, at least in part, to Frazer's use of the comparative method and to his practice of assembling many perspectives and allowing these perspectives to make his point.

It must be noted at once that Eliot was quite selective in his admiration of Frazer. For example, he did not admire Frazer's positivism. Frazer put his faith in science and celebrated what he called the evolution from magic ~ Jewel Spears Brooker
Avid Reader quotes by Jewel Spears Brooker
No book that is written for an external purpose is going to be a passionately felt book for the writer or the reader. I don't see the point in doing that. ~ Elizabeth Kostova
Avid Reader quotes by Elizabeth Kostova
To become a lifelong reader, one has to do a lot of varied and interesting reading. ~ Kelly Gallagher
Avid Reader quotes by Kelly Gallagher
It's a grave mistake in publishing, whether you're talking about Internet or print publication, to try to play to a limited repertoire of established reader interests. ~ Denis Dutton
Avid Reader quotes by Denis Dutton
In literary representation, the distinction between the genuinely erotic and the licentious is a distinction not of subject-matter, but of perspective. The genuinely erotic work is one which invites the reader to re-create in imagination the first-person point of view of someone party to an erotic encounter. The pornographic work retains as a rule the third-person perspective of the voyeuristic observer. ~ Roger Scruton
Avid Reader quotes by Roger Scruton
Write as precisely and as lucidly and as richly as you can about what you find truly mysterious and irreducible about human experience, and not obscurely about what will prove to be received opinion or cliche once the reader figures out your stylistic conceit. There's all the difference in the world between mystery and mystification. ~ Paul Harding
Avid Reader quotes by Paul Harding
I am an impatient, temperamental reader. Anything long-winded, high-flown or gushing irritates me, so does everything that is vague and indistinct, in fact anything that unnecessarily holds the reader up, whether in a novel, a biography or an intellectual argument. ~ Stefan Zweig
Avid Reader quotes by Stefan Zweig
It is more than probable that I am not understood; but I fear, indeed, that it is in no manner possible to convey to the mind of the merely general reader, an adequate idea of that nervous intensity of interest with which, in my case, the powers of meditation (not to speak technically) busied and buried themselves, in the contemplation of even the most ordinary objects of the universe. ~ Edgar Allan Poe
Avid Reader quotes by Edgar Allan Poe
The heroine might be unsure. And the reader. But I don't think the author should be. ~ Paul Park
Avid Reader quotes by Paul Park
Most fiction series are written so that the reader can come in at any point and not feel lost, but if you can start at the beginning, why not? ~ Julia Quinn
Avid Reader quotes by Julia Quinn
He was over ninety years of age, his walk was erect, he talked loudly, saw clearly, drank neat, ate, slept, and snored. He had all thirty-two of his teeth. He only wore spectacles when he read. He was of an amorous disposition, but declared that, for the last ten years, he had wholly and decidedly renounced women. He could no longer please, he said; he did not add: "I am too old," but: "I am too poor." He said: "If I were not ruined
Heee!" All he had left, in fact, was an income of about fifteen thousand francs. His dream was to come into an inheritance and to have a hundred thousand livres income for mistresses. He did not belong, as the reader will perceive, to that puny variety of octogenaries who, like M. de Voltaire, have been dying all their life; his was no longevity of a cracked pot; this jovial old man had always had good health. ~ Victor Hugo
Avid Reader quotes by Victor Hugo
The only distinguishing characteristic of a literature professor at the millennium was that he or she wrote about other people's writing. Apart from that, the writing he wrote about didn't even need to be literature, or writing about literature, or even writing about writing about literature. He needed theory...In the unflickering glare, at the center of a severe perspective, Nelson suddenly felt the visceral truth of the world as text; he apperceived the fundamentally linguistic nature of reality. Everything was text, at every level of existence, all the way up from quarks to queer theory. Words arranged in lines; lines arrayed on pages; pages pressed together, bound, and trimmed in books; books arranged cover to cover along a shelf like the words in a line of text; shelves stacked one atop the other like lines of text on a page; rows of shelves pressed together, with just the barest passage for the reader, like the pages of a book. ~ James Hynes
Avid Reader quotes by James Hynes
The holy men and women, whose lives are told throughout this book, witness to the fact that the word of God is alive and has the power to transform us. By discovering these saints, readers will learn how to embody Scripture, letting it enlarge their hearts and mold their lives into the image of Christ. ~ Stephen J. Binz
Avid Reader quotes by Stephen J. Binz
BOOK BEAUTY

Here's the end of that story about the old woman who wanted to lure a man with strange

cosmetics. She made a paste of pages from the Qur'an to fill the deep creases on her face and

neck with. This is not about an old woman, dear reader. It's about you, or anyone who tries

to use books to make themselves attractive. There she is, sticking scripture, thick with

saliva, on her face. Of course, the bits keep falling off. "The devil," she yells, and

he appears! "This is a trick I've never seen. You don't need me. You are yourself a troop

of demons!" So people steal inspired words to get compliments. Don't bother. Death comes

and all talking, stolen or not, stops. Pity anyone unfamiliar with silence when that happens.

Polish your heart with mediation and quietness. Let the inner life grow generous and handsome

like Joseph. Zuleika did that and her "old woman's spring cold snap" turned to mid-July. Dry

lips wet from within. Ink is not rouge. Let language lie bygone. Now is where love breathes. ~ Rumi
Avid Reader quotes by Rumi
I have said that each aspect of the novel demands a different quality of the reader. Well, the prophetic aspect demands two qualities: humility and the suspension of the sense of humour. ~ E. M. Forster
Avid Reader quotes by E. M. Forster
I repeat here what you will find in my first chapter, that the only thing that signifies to you in a book is what it means to you, and if your opinion is at variance with that of everyone else in the world it is of no consequence. Your opinion is valid for you. In matters of art people, especially, I think, in America, are apt to accept willingly from professors and critics a tyranny which in matters of government they would rebel against. But in these questions there is no right and wrong. The relation between the reader and his book is as free and intimate as that between the mystic and his God. Of all forms of snobbishness the literary is perhaps the most detestable, and there is no excuse for the fool who despises his fellow-man because he does not share his opinion of the value of a certain book. Pretence in literary appreciation is odious, and no one should be ashamed if a book that the best critics think highly of means nothing to him. On the other hand it is better not to speak ill of such books if you have not read them. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
Avid Reader quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Desire may cease once the desired person or object is acquired. The desire of reading doesn't cease once a book is read, however extraordinary this one was. ~ Gabrielle Dubois
Avid Reader quotes by Gabrielle Dubois
I realized early in my career that precisely what one reader
doesn't like is what another reader loves. Collectively, any writer's audience presents a mishmash of expectations that can never all be met. What one-tenth of my readership may not be crazy about the other nine-tenths savors. The moment you start altering a book or a painting or any type of art as if it's a public collaborative, you crucify its soul. I'd rather irritate a few people and delight a lot than touch no one." ~ Karen Marie Moning ~ Karen Marie Moning
Avid Reader quotes by Karen Marie Moning
When you get to the point where you know the material so well and you know the character so well that you can just sort of play off of whoever your reader is - that's the best feeling at an audition. ~ Laura Spencer
Avid Reader quotes by Laura Spencer
I like to think of what happens to characters in good novels and stories as knots
things keep knotting up. And by the end of the story
readers see an unknotting of sorts. Not what you expect, not the easy answers you get on TV, not wash and wear philosophies, but a reproduction of believable, emotional experiences. ~ Terry McMillan
Avid Reader quotes by Terry McMillan
I was an avid anime watcher until I was about 10, when I moved to manga. I think I am influenced by Osamu Tezuka's and Walt Disney's works which I watched during that time, such as Tetsuwan Atom and 101 Dalmatians. ~ Akira Toriyama
Avid Reader quotes by Akira Toriyama
The House Was Quiet and the World Was Calm
The house was quiet and the world was calm.
The reader became the book; and summer night
Was like the conscious being of the book.
The house was quiet and the world was calm.
The words were spoken as if there was no book,
Except that the reader leaned above the page,
Wanted to lean, wanted much to be
The scholar to whom his book is true, to whom
The summer night is like a perfection of thought.
The house was quiet because it had to be.
The quiet was part of the meaning, part of the mind:
The access of perfection to the page.
And the world was calm. The truth in a calm world,
In which there is no other meaning, itself
Is calm, itself is summer and night, itself
Is the reader leaning late and reading there. ~ Wallace Stevens
Avid Reader quotes by Wallace Stevens
Did you know there are hundreds of sites where you can list your free Kindle book promotions and they will give you FREE publicity and promote your book to avid Kindle readers? ~ Tom Corson-Knowles
Avid Reader quotes by Tom Corson-Knowles
I think that in a lot of readers' minds the essay is a lot more utilitarian than it is art. ~ John D'Agata
Avid Reader quotes by John D'Agata
People like ourselves may see nothing wondrous in writing, but our anthropologists know how strange and magical it appears to a purely oral people - a conversation with no one and yet with everyone. What could be stranger than the silence one encounters when addressing a question to a text? What could be more metaphysically puzzling than addressing an unseen audience, as every writer of books must do? And correcting oneself because one knows that an unknown reader will disapprove or misunderstand? ~ Neil Postman
Avid Reader quotes by Neil Postman
If you are reading in order to become a better reader, you cannot read just any book or article. You will not improve as a reader if all you read are books that are well within your capacity. You must tackle books that are beyond you, or, as we have said, books that are over your head. Only books of that sort will make you stretch your mind. And unless you stretch, you will not learn. ~ Mortimer J. Adler
Avid Reader quotes by Mortimer J. Adler
There are some readers who have never read an essay on taste; and if they take my advice they never will, for they can no more improve their taste by so doing than they could improve their appetite or digestion by studying a cookery-book. ~ Robert Southey
Avid Reader quotes by Robert Southey
TV and film are very different media with different requirements. In a TV show, you have actors and fellow writers and directors, who are interpreting your work. With a novel, you only have ink, words and your reader. ~ Howard Gordon
Avid Reader quotes by Howard Gordon
You learn to write by reading, and my experiences and tastes as a reader are pretty wide. ~ Justin Cronin
