The moral panic about supposedly unpatriotic educators was driven by international war hysteria combined with agitation over the growing domestic political strength of teachers unions. In 1917 and 1918, Congress passed the Espionage and Sedition Acts, which sought to ban public speech and actions "disloyal" to the United States military and government, especially among socialists, communists, pacifists, immigrants, and other groups perceived as affiliated with European leftism. More than any other force, the American Legion, a veterans' organization, pushed this ethos of unquestioning patriotism onto the nation's public schools. The Legion was influential: 16 U.S. senators and 130 congressmen identified as members. It promoted the idea that the Communist Party in Moscow actively recruited American teachers in order to enlist them in brainwashing the nation's youth. The Legion saw all left-of-center political activity as unacceptably anti-American. ~ Dana Goldstein
War Hysteria quotes by Dana Goldstein
Remember our war hysteria, when we called sauerkraut 'Liberty cabbage' and somebody actually proposed calling German measles 'Liberty measles'? ~ Sinclair Lewis
War Hysteria quotes by Sinclair Lewis
War hysteria and dark nationalism deactivates the mass prefrontal cortex ( the rational brain ) and activates the amygdala ( the fear centers ). They are the key tools for dark democracy. ~ Amit Ray
War Hysteria quotes by Amit Ray
war hysteria is continuous and universal in all countries, and such acts as raping, looting, the slaughter of children, the reduction of whole populations to slavery, and reprisals against prisoners which extend even to boiling and burying alive, are looked upon as normal, and, when they are committed by one's own side and not by the enemy, meritorious. But ~ George Orwell
War Hysteria quotes by George Orwell
It is part of the general pattern of misguided policy that our country is now geared to an arms economy which was bred in an artificially induced psychosis of war hysteria and nurtured upon an incessant propaganda of fear. ~ Douglas MacArthur
War Hysteria quotes by Douglas MacArthur
Our country is now geared to an arms economy bred in an artificially induced psychosis of war hysteria and an incessant propaganda of fear. ~ Douglas MacArthur
War Hysteria quotes by Douglas MacArthur
The only lies that are true are the ones that you believe. ~ Colby Buzzell
War Hysteria quotes by Colby Buzzell
I thought it [Star Wars] was too wacky for the general public. Right or wrong this is my movie, this is my decision, and this is my creative vision, and if people don't like it, they don't have to see it. ~ George Lucas
War Hysteria quotes by George Lucas
Love is the most powerful force on this world. You can't touch it but feel it. You can bind together the whole world with it, you can win the war with it. It is faster than light, sharper than laser knife. It is softer than puffer candy but can melt your heart. ~ Debasish Mridha
War Hysteria quotes by Debasish Mridha
I am a Korean War veteran. I support our troops as much as anyone in this body, but I do so by advocating redeployment out of Iraq as soon as it can be safely done. ~ John Conyers
War Hysteria quotes by John Conyers
Nothing threatens freedom of the personality and the meaning of life like war, poverty, terror. But there are also indirect and only slightly more remote dangers. One of these is the stupefaction of man (the "gray mass," to use the cynical term of bourgeois prognosticators) by mass culture with its intentional or commercially motivated lowering of intellectual level and content, with its stress on entertainment or utilitarianism, and with its carefully protective censorship. ~ Andrei Sakharov
War Hysteria quotes by Andrei Sakharov
A rioter with a Molotov cocktail in his hands is not fighting for civil rights any more than a Klansman with a sheet on his back and mask on his face. They are both more or less what the law declares them: lawbreakers, destroyers of constitutional rights and liberties and ultimately destroyers of a free America. ~ Lyndon B. Johnson
War Hysteria quotes by Lyndon B. Johnson
We abhor the follies of war, and are not untried in its distresses and calamities. Unmeddling with the affairs of other nations, we had hoped that our distance and our dispositions would have left us free, in the example and indulgence of peace with all the world. ~ Thomas Jefferson
War Hysteria quotes by Thomas Jefferson
This village has known loss, people killed before their time, accidents, war, disease. Three Pines isn't immune to any of that. But you seem to accept it as part of life and not hang on to the bitterness. ~ Louise Penny
War Hysteria quotes by Louise Penny
You don't have to pose your camera. The pictures are there, and you just take them. The truth is the best picture, the best propaganda. (On the Spanish Civil War, 1937) ~ Robert Capa
War Hysteria quotes by Robert Capa
The only way to abolish war is to make peace seem heroic. ~ John Dewey
War Hysteria quotes by John Dewey
The search for a moral equivalent of war continues to define American liberalism to this day. ~ Jonah Goldberg
War Hysteria quotes by Jonah Goldberg
The man who can face vilification and disgrace, who can stand up against the popular current, even against his friends and his country when he know he is right, who can defy those in authority over him, who can take punishment and prison and remain steadfast-that is a man of courage. The fellow whom you taunt as a 'slacker' because he refuses to turn murderer-he needs courage. But do you need much courage just to obey orders, to do as you are told and to fall in line with thousands of others to the tune of general approval and the Star Spangled Banner? ~ Alexander Berkman
War Hysteria quotes by Alexander Berkman
I will be in my coffin before I will fight again under your command. ~ Nathan Bedford Forrest
War Hysteria quotes by Nathan Bedford Forrest
-There is no victory without a war, no prize without a price, no crown without a cross ~ Ikechukwu Joseph
War Hysteria quotes by Ikechukwu Joseph
It's really fascinating. I've never spent time in a place where they lost the wars, so it was interesting and I didn't know much about the history of the country. I didn't know they were under communist rule until the nineties. It's this whole attitude of being defeated, and frowning on optimism and American way of thinking. If we were laughing, Hungarian kids would be like "You're so American." ~ Evan Jones
War Hysteria quotes by Evan Jones
What about our human rights,' demanded Carl, who'd gathered a small deputation of kids within minutes. 'There is a WAR ON,' said Crewman Devlin, shortly. I wondered if this meant grown-ups actually listen to you when there wasn't a war on, because somehow I was sceptical. ~ Sophia McDougall
War Hysteria quotes by Sophia McDougall
I say we have no time for debate. Indeed, we have no need for it, since the decision has been made for us. We must fight. There is no other path! ~ Kaoru Kurimoto
War Hysteria quotes by Kaoru Kurimoto
Mignon' said the King, 'soon you are going to be a great king'. But he also told Anjou, in a memorable phrase
'Try to remain at peace with your neighbors: I have loved war too much ... ~ Antonia Fraser
War Hysteria quotes by Antonia Fraser
I could not have the honour of being a German soldier because of my imprisonment in the First World War. And in this world war the Fuehrer refuses to allow me to serve as a soldier. ~ Fritz Sauckel
War Hysteria quotes by Fritz Sauckel
In the culture at large, the war over science fiction's creative validity has been long since won, but guardians at the gates of literature, movies, and TV linger unconvinced, even as other genres fitfully transcend critical perceptions of insubstantiality. ~ Steve Erickson
War Hysteria quotes by Steve Erickson
From the cranberry cancer scare of the 1950s to the Alar-in-apples hysteria of the 1980s, from the "new ice age" of the 1960s to the "global warming" of the 1990s, environmental alarms almost always turn out to be false. Few non-political scientists fear ozone loss, global warming, or acid rain. These are just issues that some people hope to use to reorder the lives of the rest of us. ~ Harry Browne
War Hysteria quotes by Harry Browne
I consider that 9/11 was the day when war was started against my own work and against myself. Even though we are not sure of the links, Iraq was one of the countries that did not lower its flags in mourning on 9/11. ~ Adam Michnik
War Hysteria quotes by Adam Michnik
Women give birth, men take life. Therefore, men are jealous of this power. War is menstruation envy. ~ Greg Proops
War Hysteria quotes by Greg Proops

War Hysteria quotes by Karl Marx
Almost everybody wore a curious limpidity of expression, like newborn babies or souls just after death. Dazed but curiously dignified ... after a criseof hysterical revulsion and tiredness, I passed beyondand became entered by a rather sublime feeling. ~ Elizabeth Bowen
War Hysteria quotes by Elizabeth Bowen
I've never killed men with so little regard. And it frightens me how easy I find it in war. There is no ambiguity here, no violation of moral creed. These people are warColors. They kill me or I kill them. It's simpler than the Passage. ~ Pierce Brown
War Hysteria quotes by Pierce Brown
I have heard that in war haste can be folly, but have never seen delay that was wise. ~ Sun Tzu
War Hysteria quotes by Sun Tzu
Some people will talk about how Afghanistan has improved, but they're really just talking about the cities. In the countryside where the war has been fought, it's really not that much better than it was in 2001. ~ Anand Gopal
War Hysteria quotes by Anand Gopal
How does the burnt forest learn to trust again? How does it reach for warmth without mistaking it for war? ~ Bianca Phipps
War Hysteria quotes by Bianca Phipps
The United States is so powerful that the only country capable of destroying her might be the United States herself, which means that the ultimate terrorist strategy would be to just leave the country alone. That way, America's ugliest partisan tendencies could emerge unimpeded by the unifying effects of war. The ultimate betrayal of tribe isn't acting competitively - that should be encouraged - but predicating your power on the excommunication of others from the group. ~ Sebastian Junger
War Hysteria quotes by Sebastian Junger
In Britain, these Jewish refugees were greeted with a mixture of grudging acceptance by some and open hostility by others. ~ Thomas Harding

War Hysteria quotes by Joshua Muravchik
Men's bodies are our women's works of art. Given to us power of control, we will never carelessly throw them in to fill up the gaps in human relationships made by international ambitions and greeds ... War will pass when intellectual culture and activity have made possible to the female an equal share in the governance of modern national life; it will probably not pass away much sooner; its extinction will not be delayed much longer. ~ Olive Schreiner
War Hysteria quotes by Olive Schreiner
