China is not only formidable, it is also aggressively building its own economic infrastructure. Just a few years from now, China will rival the U.S. and the European Union in global market power. It already has surpassed us in population. ~ Jo Ann Emerson
The European Union quotes by Jo Ann Emerson
It does not seem to me that the steps which would be needed to make Britain - and others - more comfortable in their relationship in the European Union are inherently so outlandish or unreasonable. ~ David Cameron
The European Union quotes by David Cameron
The people who are backing the Remain campaign are people who have done very well, thank you, out of the European Union. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
We've stated very clearly that no negotiating chapters between the European Union and Turkey will be concluded before the Ankara Protocol is complied with: that's to say before Turkey grants all E.U. member states, including Cyprus, access to its ports. ~ Angela Merkel
The European Union quotes by Angela Merkel
Today, the European Union is busy transferring aid. If they can build infrastructure in Spain, roads, highways ... why do they refuse to use the same aid to build the same infrastructure in our countries? ~ Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
The European Union quotes by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
As James Heartfield, author of The European Union and the End of Politics, noted, to follow such events is to 'Step through the looking glass into the EU-world where the rule of the people is dictatorial, but the rule of unelected experts is democracy.'5 The ~ Mick Hume
The European Union quotes by Mick Hume
I don't just want a better deal for Britain. I want a better deal for Europe too. So I speak as British prime minister with a positive vision for the future of the European Union. A future in which Britain wants, and should want, to play a committed and active part. ~ David Cameron
The European Union quotes by David Cameron
Kosovo's destiny is clearly to join the European Union at some point. ~ Emma Bonino
The European Union quotes by Emma Bonino
However, the fact that American forces continued to work with the warlords and pay them gave them new power in their communities. They intimidated local people by telling them they could call in airstrikes on their satellite phones. And to the horror of many of the Europeans, Rumsfeld and other US officials would visit them as if they were important leaders. 'There is a certain illogic in trying to boost the authority of the central government on one hand and in conniving with local warlords on the other,' complained Chris Patten, the European Union Commissioner, when he visited Kabul in May 2002. 'There are things done in the short term which are unhelpful in the long term. ~ Christina Lamb
The European Union quotes by Christina Lamb
I think that what we have heard from the Remain campaign throughout this whole referendum have been dire warnings of the terrible consequences of the British people just taking control of our own destiny. And, the truth is, if we vote to Leave we will be in an economically stronger position. We will be able to take back some of the money that we currently give to the European Union and we can invest it in our priorities. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
I find no contradiction between being a Highlander, a Scot, a citizen of the U.K. and a citizen of the European Union at one and the same time. ~ Charles Kennedy
The European Union quotes by Charles Kennedy
When the day comes that Tehran can announce its nuclear capability, every shred of international law will have been discarded. The mullahs have publicly sworn - to the United Nations and the European Union and the International Atomic Energy Agency - that they are not cheating. As they unmask their batteries, they will be jeering at the very idea of an 'international community.' How strange it is that those who usually fetishize the United Nations and its inspectors do not feel this shame more keenly. ~ Christopher Hitchens
The European Union quotes by Christopher Hitchens
The government has been repairing Poland's image and its relations with the European Union and the world. ~ Donald Tusk
The European Union quotes by Donald Tusk
The Financial Times is pro-British membership of the European Union. We have taken that position for decades. But we are not starry-eyed about the European Union. And we do not believe and have not believed for at least 10 years that Britain should be part of the euro. ~ Lionel Barber
The European Union quotes by Lionel Barber
I'm a great supporter of the European Union. I didn't support entry to the Euro, not because I'm against it in principle but because I didn't think it was economically right for Britain. But that doesn't make me any less pro-European. ~ Gordon Brown
The European Union quotes by Gordon Brown
I think that the message I have of optimism and hope about Britain's bright future outside the European Union is shared by many Conservative members and voters - indeed by a majority of the country. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
Let me be absolutely clear: I think it is defeatist to sort of say we want to leave the European Union. We're going to try and change the rules and change the way it works and change the objectives that it has in order to make it something that works for Britain. ~ Philip Hammond
The European Union quotes by Philip Hammond
If the euro zone doesn't come up with a comprehensive vision of its own future, you'll have a whole range of nationalist, xenophobic and extreme movements increasing across the European Union. And, frankly, questions about the British debate on EU membership will just be a small sideshow compared to the rise of political populism. ~ Nick Clegg
The European Union quotes by Nick Clegg
I have been supporting the European Union, but we are still a work in progress. We have to become more of a United States of Europe. We should talk about electing a president of the E.U., rather than having one selected from the heads of government. ~ George Papandreou
The European Union quotes by George Papandreou
The U.K. is outward-looking, trade-oriented, growth-oriented, and we do not have enough of that storyline, that tradition, that culture within the European Union. ~ Mark Rutte
The European Union quotes by Mark Rutte
But I do think that Brexit, an exit of Britain from the European Union, would trigger real pressure on the United Kingdom. ~ Lionel Barber
The European Union quotes by Lionel Barber
We must stress that the euro has been beneficial to the European Union because, otherwise, in this context of international turmoil, every country would have to devalue their currencies. ~ Jean-Pierre Raffarin
The European Union quotes by Jean-Pierre Raffarin
It is the hope of the European Union that Ariel Sharon will keep the peace process alive and continue the dialogue according to the wishes of all the parties involved. ~ Goran Persson
The European Union quotes by Goran Persson
Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (or BRAIN) project announced by President Obama, and the Human Brain Project of the European Union, which will potentially allocate billions of dollars to decode the pathways of the brain, all the way down to the neural level. ~ Michio Kaku
The European Union quotes by Michio Kaku
If we leave the European Union, yes there will be bumps in the road, inevitably, but we will be in a better position to deal with them. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
Scottish nationalism has grown since we entered the European Union. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
Regarding the visa-free regime, it has undoubtedly become a problem for the European Union, above all in terms of its capacity to reach agreements. ~ Sergei Lavrov
The European Union quotes by Sergei Lavrov
A handful of individual football stars - not necessarily the most talented, but those boasting good looks, beautiful wives and an animated private life - assumed a role in European public life and popular newspapers hitherto reserved for movie starlets or minor royalty. When David Beckham (an English player of moderate technical gifts but an unsurpassed talent for self-promotion) moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2003, it made headline television news in every member-state of the European Union. Beckham's embarrassing performance at the European Football Championships in Portugal the following year - the England captain missed two penalties, hastening his country's ignominious early departure - did little to dampen the enthusiasm of his fans. ~ Tony Judt
The European Union quotes by Tony Judt
Turkey, with its political intolerance, as I have described it, is prepared to march forward, to break with its taboo about the Armenians, and is making great strides with respect to human rights and freedom of speech so that it can join the European Union. This alone shows how powerful the European idea is. ~ Orhan Pamuk
The European Union quotes by Orhan Pamuk
When I saw how the European Union was developing, it was very obvious what they had in mind was not democratic. In Britain, you vote for a government so the government has to listen to you, and if you don't like it you can change it. ~ Tony Benn
The European Union quotes by Tony Benn
I like this idea of the re-foundation of the European Union, maybe it can be done, because Europe - I do not say is unique, but it has a force, a culture, a history that cannot be wasted, and we must do everything so that the European Union has the strength and also the inspiration to make it go forward. ~ Pope Francis
The European Union quotes by Pope Francis
I believe that there are better opportunities to keep people safe if we are outside the European Union. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
Basically, Herman van Rompuy wants the European Union to become a debt union, which may be acceptable to some of the southern countries who are effectively bust. To the northern countries, it is not. ~ Nigel Farage
The European Union quotes by Nigel Farage
The heart of the matter is that the very nature of the European Union, and of this country's relationship with it, has fundamentally changed after the coming into being of the European monetary union and the creation of the eurozone, of which - quite rightly - we are not a part. ~ Nigel Lawson
The European Union quotes by Nigel Lawson
On 11 September 2001 the Twin Towers were hit. Twelve years earlier, on 9 November 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. That date heralded the "happy 90's," the Francis Fukuyama dream of the "end of history" –the belief that liberal democracy had, in principle, won; that the search was over; that the advent of a global, liberal world community lurked just around the corner; that the obstacles to this ultra-Hollywood happy ending were merely empirical and contingent (local pockets of resistance were the leaders did not yet grasp that their time was up). In contrast, 9/11 is the main symbol of the Clintonite happy 90's. This is the era in which new walls emerge everywhere, between Israel and the West Bank, around the European union, on the U.S.-Mexico border. The rise of the populist New Right is just the most prominent example of the urge to raise new walls. ~ Slavoj Zizek
The European Union quotes by Slavoj Zizek
When the clowns of British politics - arch-Brexiteer cartoon characters 'Boorish Johnson' and 'JackOff Grease-Smug' advocate ad infinitum that Britain should leave the EU in order to be free to sign her own trade deals; they seem to have overlooked the towering elephant in the room, namely the current occupant of the White House (another clown) - who appears hell-bent on destabilising world trade via crude protectionist policies. Both Tories, despite receiving the best British education money can buy, would do well to revisit their post war history books and be reminded of one of the key objectives of the European Project and in due course the European Union - specifically to promote peace and prosperity amongst previously warring neighbours by forming a unified trading bloc which in time, due to its effective size, also acted as a useful counterweight to US hegemony. Go find another circus for your buffoonery and leave the deadly serious business of politics to principled individuals with the true national interest at heart ! ~ Alex Morritt
The European Union quotes by Alex Morritt
I felt we needed someone to lead this country who believed heart and soul in leaving the European Union. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
That as much as we're afraid of New World Order coming and of Canada and America joining together, that if we don't learn the lessons from the past then it doesn't matter what you want to call it: the North American Union or the South American Union, or the European Union, or the African Union ... it doesn't matter what you call it as long as the arrangement remains the same. ~ Immortal Technique
The European Union quotes by Immortal Technique
We believe that from both a German and a Polish perspective, it is desirable for Great Britain to remain in the European Union. ~ Angela Merkel
The European Union quotes by Angela Merkel
The next leader of this country needs to be someone who believes heart and soul that Britain should be outside the European Union. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
The Czech Republic, severed from its old Slovak half, sits in apparent landlocked contentment, inside the European Union but outside the troubled Euro Zone, set into the new Continental mosaic like one of the small sturdy paving stones, just a few inches square, that form the sidewalks under the visitor's ambling feet. ~ Thomas Mallon
The European Union quotes by Thomas Mallon
If we left the European Union, it would be a one-way ticket, not a return. So we will have time for a proper, reasoned debate. At the end of that debate you, the British people, will decide. ~ David Cameron
The European Union quotes by David Cameron
We would like Serbia to become a member of the European Union as quickly as possible. ~ Ivica Dacic
The European Union quotes by Ivica Dacic
In the European Union, a fleet average of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer will be permitted in 2020. This corresponds to fuel consumption of about four liters (per 100 kilometers; about 59 mpg). We have to continue reducing the fuel consumption of our vehicles and offer hybrid and electric vehicles, or else we will be unable to achieve these values. ~ Norbert Reithofer
The European Union quotes by Norbert Reithofer
We have used the presence of UNMIK, as well as other European and American agencies to establish a legal framework compatible with the European Union and that is already an advantage. We have seen the positive effects of this and our parliament will continue to go this way. ~ Ibrahim Rugova
The European Union quotes by Ibrahim Rugova
The institutions of the European Union, and the states that belong to this union, each and every one, are paying the price of our failures, hesitations and contradictions. We should each ask ourselves how personally responsible we are. ~ Giorgio Napolitano
The European Union quotes by Giorgio Napolitano
The euro area must not be treated as an 'opt out' from the European Union. ~ Jose Manuel Barroso
The European Union quotes by Jose Manuel Barroso
The UK is not going to leave the European Union. Of course not. We are inextricably wound up with Europe. In terms of culture, history and geography, we are a European nation. ~ Nick Clegg
The European Union quotes by Nick Clegg
Margaret [Hodge] is obviously entitled to do what she wishes to do. I would ask her to think for a moment, a Tory prime minister resigned, Britain's voted to leave the European Union, there are massive political issues to be addressed, is it really a good idea to start a big debate in the Labour Party when I was elected less than a year ago with a very large mandate not from MPs, I fully concede and understand that, but from the party members as a whole. ~ Jeremy Corbyn
The European Union quotes by Jeremy Corbyn
Some French politicians have said that the European Union should drop sanctions against Russia so everybody can join together in this fight against the Islamic State. But we're hearing from French officials that [Francois] Hollande hasn't changed his stance. He's - he's still saying that sanctions shouldn't be lifted until the Minsk agreement has been implemented. ~ Corey Flintoff
The European Union quotes by Corey Flintoff
Road testing the effects of regulation on European business must become second nature to the European Union. ~ John Hutton
The European Union quotes by John Hutton
The biggest danger to the European Union comes not from those who advocate change, but from those who denounce new thinking as heresy. In its long history Europe has experience of heretics who turned out to have a point. ~ David Cameron
The European Union quotes by David Cameron
After the dismissal of Hamrouche and until 1999, the state underwent a severe financial crisis and was on the verge of stopping all payments. Loans had to be negotiated with international financial institutions, particularly with the IMF, which required a structural adjustment program. State finances were saved by credits from the IMF and the European Union. Algerian negotiators, who played on the fear of the European states about the Islamist threat, said in effect, "It's either us, with all our defects, or an Islamist republic just one hour's flight from Europe." Alarmed to the point of panic, the West paid up without any conditions on how their credits were to be used. Policy thereafter fluctuated between rhetoric and laxity in letting deficits mount. ~ Ellen Lust
The European Union quotes by Ellen Lust
My view is that those challenges will be easier to meet, those risks will be less if we vote to leave because we will have control of the economic levers; we will have control over money we send to the European Union. We will have control over our own laws, and as a result, we will be able to deal with whatever the world throws at us. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
In particular, I wanted to help build a team behind Boris Johnson so that a politician who argued for leaving the European Union could lead us to a better future. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
The US and the European Union needs to help in the translation of the demand for democracy into a political will. ~ Recep Tayyip Erdogan
The European Union quotes by Recep Tayyip Erdogan
The English will never develop into a nation of philosophers. They will always prefer instinct to logic and character to intelligence. But they must get rid of their downright contempt for 'cleverness'. They cannot afford it any longer. They must grow less tolerant of ugliness, and mentally more adventurous. And they must stop despising foreigners. They are Europeans and ought to be aware of it. ~ George Orwell
The European Union quotes by George Orwell
Norwegian legislation is more in conformity with the rules of the European Union than most member states. ~ Jose Manuel Barroso
The European Union quotes by Jose Manuel Barroso
Terrorism is an evil that threatens all the countries in Europe. Vigorous cooperation in the European Union and worldwide is crucial in order to meet this evil head on. ~ Jan Peter Balkenende
The European Union quotes by Jan Peter Balkenende
I'll negotiate with toughness, and with great attention to detail to get the best possible deal for Britain. It's only when we are outside the European Union that we can at last bring those numbers [of migrants] under control in the way that the public want. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
What I'd do is not have USAID and the National Endowment for Democracy working with U.S. taxpayers' money to knock off an elected government in Ukraine, which is what they did. I wouldn't try to force the people of Ukraine into a deal with NATO against their interest or into a deal with the European Union, which is against their economic interest. ~ Dennis Kucinich
The European Union quotes by Dennis Kucinich
For the institutions of the European Union are at present incomplete. A European Senate is badly needed to complete them. By creating an upper chamber in the European parliament, a new bridge could be built between national political classes, which retain democratic legitimacy, and the decision-making process in Brussels. Such a Senate should be recruited by indirect election from exisiting national parliaments. ~ Larry Siedentop
The European Union quotes by Larry Siedentop
At the core of the European Union must be, as it is now, the single market. Britain is at the heart of that Single Market, and must remain so. ~ David Cameron
The European Union quotes by David Cameron
Both France and Britain are supportive of India's bid for a broad-based agreement on trade and investment with the European Union. ~ Salman Khurshid
The European Union quotes by Salman Khurshid
Now, the entire world community recognizes Georgia. We are members of the United Nations and the Council of Europe. Everything is being prepared so that we will soon enter the European Union. ~ Eduard Shevardnadze
The European Union quotes by Eduard Shevardnadze
Mexico is the second most important destination of U.S. exports. What does this mean? The U.S. sells to our country almost the same as it sells to all the European Union, five times what it sells Brazil. More than what it sells together to Brazil, Russia, China, and India. ~ Enrique Pena Nieto
The European Union quotes by Enrique Pena Nieto
A lot of international companies invest in the U.K. as a base for doing business with the rest of the European Union. ~ Tim Harford
The European Union quotes by Tim Harford
This is what the European Union is all about. A strong market with a strong currency. ~ Mark Rutte
The European Union quotes by Mark Rutte
We want the United Kingdom to remain in the European Union. ~ Francois Hollande
The European Union quotes by Francois Hollande
The purpose of the European Union expansion is to bring stability to the East, and ultimately, that stability will come to Russia. There is no long term reason that Russia can't be part of the same peaceful community of nations. ~ Wesley Clark
The European Union quotes by Wesley Clark
If we leave the European Union, there will be an immediate economic shock that will hit financial markets. People will not know what the future looks like. ~ George Osborne
The European Union quotes by George Osborne
Of course there are collaborations. But in official meetings with Western diplomats from the US and the European Union, the major issues of our relationships are simply not discussed. The topics are on climate change or any other issues they want us to agree with them on. But they never discuss how we could develop an equal relationship. They should stop using pompous orchestrated summits and begin a serious dialogue with small meetings. ~ Yoweri Museveni
The European Union quotes by Yoweri Museveni
Speaking from my experience as a person involved for a long time in building the European Union, it is important to have patience and efforts to build a community of nations. ~ Giorgio Napolitano
The European Union quotes by Giorgio Napolitano
I think it's extremely unlikely that the European Union will fracture with nations dropping off the edge. ~ John Major
The European Union quotes by John Major
At the heart of these challenges lies the question of how the institutions of the European Union make laws, the types of laws they pass and the effectiveness with which those laws are implemented on civil society and the economy. ~ John Hutton
The European Union quotes by John Hutton
The European Union Treaty ... within a few years will lead to the creation of what the founding fathers of modern Europe dreamed of after the war, the United States of Europe. ~ Helmut Kohl
The European Union quotes by Helmut Kohl
The European Union spends most of its time either suing me, torturing me, criticizing me or condemning me for lowering the cost of air travel all over Europe. ~ Michael O'Leary
The European Union quotes by Michael O'Leary
During an hour-long conversation mid-flight, he laid out his theory of the war. First, Jones said, the United States could not lose the war or be seen as losing the war.

'If we're not successful here,' Jones said, 'you'll have a staging base for global terrorism all over the world. People will say the terrorists won. And you'll see expressions of these kinds of things in Africa, South America, you name it. Any developing country is going to say, this is the way we beat [the United States], and we're going to have a bigger problem.' A setback or loss for the United States would be 'a tremendous boost for jihadist extremists, fundamentalists all over the world' and provide 'a global infusion of morale and energy, and these people don't need much.'

Jones went on, using the kind of rhetoric that Obama had shied away from, 'It's certainly a clash of civilizations. It's a clash of religions. It's a clash of almost concepts of how to live.' The conflict is that deep, he said. 'So I think if you don't succeed in Afghanistan, you will be fighting in more places.

'Second, if we don't succeed here, organizations like NATO, by association the European Union, and the United Nations might be relegated to the dustbin of history.'

Third, 'I say, be careful you don't over-Americanize the war. I know that we're going to do a large part of it,' but it was essential to get active, increased participation by the other 41 nations, get their buy-in and ma ~ Bob Woodward
The European Union quotes by Bob Woodward
The common fisheries policy essentially gave other European Union nations unfettered access to our fish stocks and - I would hope - that if we leave the European Union, we can once more see the ports of Peterborough and Fraserhead and Grimsby flourishing, because we will take back control of our territorial waters. ~ Michael Gove
The European Union quotes by Michael Gove
The fact that we're going through a crisis is an opportunity for Europe to be more coordinated and more integrated. We're actually talking about a European Monetary Fund or euro bonds, about guarantees for countries, about economic governance in the European Union. That shows the strength of Europe. ~ George Papandreou
The European Union quotes by George Papandreou
The vast majority of Muslim residents of the United Kingdom voted to stay in the EU. And the balance of the British population voted to leave the European Union. ~ Rush Limbaugh
The European Union quotes by Rush Limbaugh
A united Europe is our Continent's only chance to avoid falling off the world's radar. The heads of government of Germany, France and the United Kingdom also know that their voice is only heard internationally because they speak through the megaphone of the European Union. ~ Jean-Claude Juncker
The European Union quotes by Jean-Claude Juncker
Here we have the Schengen agreement, and the truth is that for years we trusted each other and set border controls on the outer borders of the European Union. And as was the case with the economic and monetary union, with this step, regarding the management of the Schengen area, we did not go all the way in terms of political solutions. ~ Angela Merkel
The European Union quotes by Angela Merkel
The New World Order is a more palatable name for the Anglo American world empire. It's the planetary domination of London, New York, Washington over the rest of the world. It's hard to get people to join that or think they have a part in it if you called it the Anglo American world empire. If you call it the New World Order, then people in India or some place like that or the European Union might think, "Well, there's something there for us too." But that's not what it is; it's the Anglo American New World Order. ~ Alex Jones
The European Union quotes by Alex Jones
We will do everything to change what needs to be changed, fight against recession so that the country meets its targets, while reinforcing our country in the heart of the euro and the European Union. ~ Yiannis Stournaras
The European Union quotes by Yiannis Stournaras
Ukraine is a vital link for Europe: our energy transportation networks; our location between the European Union and Eurasia. We're the melting pot of Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity. The democracy we founded with the Orange Revolution has to be an example for other post-Soviet states. ~ Yulia Tymoshenko
The European Union quotes by Yulia Tymoshenko
The United Kingdom and the European Union will remain indispensable partners of the United States even as they begin negotiating their ongoing relationship to ensure continued stability, security and prosperity for Europe, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the world. ~ Barack Obama
The European Union quotes by Barack Obama
I find it extraordinary that I'm being told I can't trust you the voter to get a government in to protect workers rights and that we need Brussels to defend you, the euro is a broken project we are going to pay, no you are going to pay out of your taxes one bailout out of another and the European union does not protect your jobs. ~ Gisela Stuart
The European Union quotes by Gisela Stuart
The European Union is the world's most successful invention for advancing peace. ~ John Bruton
The European Union quotes by John Bruton
I will work for Bulgaria's strategic choice - Bulgaria's membership in the European Union and NATO. I think it is also extremely important to revive Bulgaria's relations with Russia, Ukraine and other strategic partners. ~ Georgi Parvanov
The European Union quotes by Georgi Parvanov
If the 'Athens Spring' - when the Greek people courageously rejected the catastrophic austerity conditions of the previous bailouts - has one lesson to teach, it is that Greece will recover only when the European Union makes the transition from 'We the states' to 'We the European people.' ~ Yanis Varoufakis
The European Union quotes by Yanis Varoufakis
The European Union arose on an economic foundation, and it turns out that even this is not a solid base. Cultural identity has been neglected. ~ Gunter Grass
The European Union quotes by Gunter Grass
We still nurse a sense of our homogeneity and difference from others, and that's precisely what the European Union, in my view, should be doing its best to undermine. ~ Peter Sutherland
The European Union quotes by Peter Sutherland
I talked to Llewellyn and got a thick briefing packet with the key arguments on both sides. The problem, for those who wanted to stay in the EU, was that many of the arguments for Brexit were built on lies: about how much the UK paid into the European Union; about how Brexit wouldn't hurt the British economy. Another problem was that the Brexit campaign was tapping into the same sense of nationalism and nostalgia that the Trump campaign was promoting back home: the days of Churchill, the absence of immigrants and intrusive international institutions. The arguments for staying in the EU were grounded in facts, not emotion: The EU was Britain's largest market. The EU offered Britain a stronger voice in global affairs. Even the name of the campaign - Remain - sounded like a concession that life wasn't going to be all that you hoped it would be. ~ Ben Rhodes
The European Union quotes by Ben Rhodes
Maastricht had three significant side-effects. One of them was the unforeseen boost it gave to NATO. Under the restrictive terms of the Treaty it was clear (as the French at least had intended) that the newly liberated countries of eastern Europe could not possibly join the European Union in the immediate future - neither their fragile legal and financial institutions nor their convalescent economies were remotely capable of operating under the strict fiscal and other regulations the Union's members had now imposed upon all present and future signatories.

Instead, it was suggested in the corridors of Brussels that Poland, Hungary and their neighbours might be offered early membership of NATO as a sort of compensation: an interim prize. The symbolic value of extending NATO in this way was obviously considerable, which is why it was immediately welcomed in the new candidate member-states. The practical benefits were less obvious (unlike the damage to relations with Moscow which was real and immediate). But because Washington had reasons of its own for favouring the expansion of the North Atlantic Defense community, a first group of central European nations was duly admitted to NATO a few years later. ~ Tony Judt
The European Union quotes by Tony Judt
By the way, the European Union Member States together - even the euro area Member States together - are by far the biggest contributors to the IMF. ~ Jose Manuel Barroso
The European Union quotes by Jose Manuel Barroso
It is not so much the United States that is trying to push the European Union in one direction or another, it is developing nations as a whole that are pushing the United States and Europe to open their markets a little more. ~ Pascal Lamy
The European Union quotes by Pascal Lamy
If we leave the European Union it's a risk to our economy - it's a risk to pensioners, it's a risk to homeowners, it's a risk to people in work. ~ George Osborne
The European Union quotes by George Osborne
Peace is brittle and a big burden on our shoulders so we need ... concrete help from the European Union and the European Commission, we can get more support together than on our own, to maximize the gains for our peoples. ~ Edi Rama
The European Union quotes by Edi Rama
Our relationship with the European Union, which has done so much to promote stability, stimulate economic growth, and foster the spread of democratic values and ideals across the continent and beyond. ~ Barack Obama
The European Union quotes by Barack Obama
