I try to find a style that matches the book. In the Baroque Cycle, I got infected with the prose style of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, which is my favorite era. It's recent enough that it is easy to read - easier than Elizabethan English - but it's pre-Victorian and so doesn't have the pomposity that is often a problem with 19th-century English prose. It is earthy and direct and frequently hilarious. ~ Neal Stephenson
Prose Style quotes by Neal Stephenson
The author apologizes for being unable to afford a ghost writer, which explains the lack of a distinctive prose style. ~ Richard Armour
Prose Style quotes by Richard Armour
The public has an exalted view of authors, and rightly so. Great writers impact deeply on our imagination. And yet, behind the kudos, there sometimes lurks a person at odds with the nobility of the author photo or the 'sheer humanity' of the prose style. ~ Conrad Williams
Prose Style quotes by Conrad Williams
For the truth remains that more can also be more, and that less is often inevitably less. ~ Chigozie Obioma
Prose Style quotes by Chigozie Obioma
I have always tended toward a lush prose style, but I take care to modulate it from story to story and to strip it down entirely when necessary. ~ Jeff VanderMeer
Prose Style quotes by Jeff VanderMeer
If the novelist loses touch with this linguistic ground of prose style, if he is unable to attain the heights of a relativized, Galilean linguistic consciousness, if he is deaf to organic double-voicedness and to the internal dialogization of living and evolving discourse, then he will never comprehend, or even realize, the actual possibilities and tasks of the novel as a genre. He may, of course, crete an artistic work that compositionally and thematically will be similar to a novel, will be "made" exactly as a novel is made, but he will not thereby have created a novel. The style will always give him away. We will recognize the naively self-confident or obtusely stubborn unity of a smooth, pure single-voiced language (perhaps accompanied by a primitive, artificial, worked-up double-voicedness). We quickly sense that such an author finds it easy to purge his work of speech diversity: he simply does not listen to the fundamental heteroglossia inherent in actual language; he mistakes social overtones, which create the timbres of words, for irritating noises that it is his task to eliminate. The novel, when torn out of authentic linguistic speech diversity, emerges in most cases as a "closet drama," with detailed, fully developed and "artistically worked out" stage directions (it is, of course, bad drama). In such a novel, divested of its language diversity, authorial language inevitably ends up in the awkward and absurd position of the language of stage directions in plays [32 ~ Mikhail Bakhtin
Prose Style quotes by Mikhail Bakhtin
The older I get, the more I seek to use a plain prose style, concentrating more on story. ~ John Scott
Prose Style quotes by John Scott
Every difficult work presents us with a choice of whether to judge the author inept for not being clear, or ourselves stupid for not grasping what is going on. Montaigne encouraged us to blame the author. An incomprehensible prose-style is likely to have resulted more from laziness than cleverness; what reads easily is rarely so written ... ~ John Kennedy Toole
Prose Style quotes by John Kennedy Toole
Susan Campbell has brought Isabella's fascinating forgotten story back to life with the deep research of a born historian and the vibrant readable prose style of a veteran journalist. ~ Debby Applegate
Prose Style quotes by Debby Applegate
History, lie of our lives, mire of our loins. Our sins, our souls. Hiss-tih-ree: the tip of the pen taking a trip of three steps (with one glide) down the chronicle to trap a slick, sibilant character. Hiss. (Ss.) Tih. Ree.
He was a pig, a plain pig, in the morning, standing five feet ten on one hoof. He was a pig in slacks. He was a pig in school. He was a pig on the dotted line. But in my eyes it's always the ones signing dotted lines that become pigs.
Did this pig have a precursor? He did, indeed he did. In point of fact, dating all the way back to the Biblical Age. Oh where? About everywhere you look there's pigs giving that fancy ol' snake a chase. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you can always count on a fuckin' pretentious sarcastican for a fancy prose style. ~ Brian Celio
Prose Style quotes by Brian Celio
My early prose style - this is so embarrassing - was sort of a suburban, Presbyterian knockoff of Woody Allen. ~ John Hughes
Prose Style quotes by John Hughes
The newspaper is, in fact, very bad for one's prose style. That's why I gravitated towards feature stories where you get a little more leeway in the writing style. ~ Tom Wolfe
Prose Style quotes by Tom Wolfe
The thing about Dickens is you either love him or you hate him and I fell in love with Dickens, I fell in love with his prose style and I decided that I wanted to read the whole Dickens verve during the course of my life. ~ George Brandis
Prose Style quotes by George Brandis
If the British prose style is Churchillian, America is the tobacco auctioneer, the barker; Runyon, Lardner, W.W., the traveling salesman who can sell the world the Brooklyn Bridge every day, can put anything over on you and convince you that tomatoes grow at the South Pole. ~ Ishmael Reed
Prose Style quotes by Ishmael Reed
fiction must be different from reportage; painting from photography. And this difference should be reflected in the language of the work ~ Paul West
Prose Style quotes by Paul West
In the eighteenth century, with the growth of publishing and with the intellectual climate of the Enlightenment, there was a great demand for new historical writing. The greatest product of this was The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, a massive six-volume work published between 1776 and 1788, precisely between the American Revolution and the French Revolution. The context is important, as the author Edward Gibbon was examining not only the greatness of Rome, but the forces which brought about its decay.
......
Gibbon's interpretation of history was controversial, especially in its examination of the growth of Christianity, but his accurate scholarship and engaging prose style have made The Decline and Fall the most enduring work of history in English.

In the eighteenth century, history is seen as a branch of belles-lettres, and it subsumes within it scriptural authority on the one hand, and fictional narrative on the other. History is, in effect, the new secular authority of the Enlightenment, and comes to be a very wide-ranging category of writing. ~ Ronald Carter
Prose Style quotes by Ronald Carter
Herein find fiction full of whimsy, wit, hurt, and terror. Wicked, as in wickedly funny, is in the mix, too, along with a prose style both seductive and sly. Any one of Doug Watson's first collection of stories, The Era of Not Quite, can mend a broken world. ~ Christine Schutt
Prose Style quotes by Christine Schutt
Speech recognition is utterly crap for writing fiction. If you try reading a novel aloud you'll soon figure out why - written prose style is utterly unlike the spoken word. ~ Charles Stross
Prose Style quotes by Charles Stross
(Psychoanalysis, it seems, does wonders for a man's prose style: it renders it labyrinthine without subtlety.) There is no place, then, for human agency, except the kind that leads you to talk about yourself in the presence of another for twenty years. Shallowness can go no deeper. ~ Theodore Dalrymple
Prose Style quotes by Theodore Dalrymple
To begin with, it has nothing to do with archaism, with the salvaging of obsolete words and turns of speech, or with the setting-up of a "standard English" which must never be departed from. On the contrary, it is especially concerned with the scrapping of every word or idiom which has outworn its usefulness. It has nothing to do with correct grammar and syntax, which are of no importance so long as one makes one's meaning clear, or with the avoidance of Americanisms, or with having what is called "good prose style." On the other hand it is not concerned with fake simplicity and the attempt to make written English colloquial. Nor does it even imply in every case preferring the Saxon word to the Latin one, though it does imply using the fewest and shortest words that will cover one's meaning. What is above all needed is to let the meaning choose the word, and not the other way about. In prose the worst thing one can do with words is to surrender to them. When you think of a concrete object, you think wordlessly, and then, if you want to describe the thing you have been visualizing, you probably hunt about till you find the exact words that seem to fit it. When you think of something abstract you are more inclined to use words from the start, and unless you make a conscious effort to prevent it, the existing dialect will come rushing in and do the job for you, at the expense of blurring or even changing your meaning. Probably it is better to put off using words as long as possi ~ George Orwell
Prose Style quotes by George Orwell
My personal style changes wherever I am. When I'm in Ibiza, I'm a bit girlier because there's an opportunity to be more romantic and dress up for the beach scene. Whereas in New York, I tend to go for suiting and tailoring that almost feels like weaponry for the city - but I think I'm quite playful no matter what. ~ Jade Jagger
Prose Style quotes by Jade Jagger
Come to a rousing end. End in style, with flair or a flourish. ~ Anthony Weston
Prose Style quotes by Anthony Weston
In all my work, in the movies I write, the lyrics, the poetry, the prose, the essays, I am saying that we may encounter many defeats - maybe it's imperative that we encounter the defeats - but we are much stronger than we appear to be and maybe much better than we allow ourselves to be. Human beings are more alike than unalike. ~ Maya Angelou
Prose Style quotes by Maya Angelou
He's sporting that rumpled, rolled-out-of-bed hair, and yet I don't find it so adorable anymore. It just makes him look like a slob. Or maybe a phony, because I'm pretty sure I can see gel in his hair, which means he must've taken the time to create the I-don't-care style. Which makes him a fucking liar. ~ Elle Kennedy
Prose Style quotes by Elle Kennedy
Whatever is pure is also simple. It does not keep the eye on itself. The observer forgets the window in the landscape it displays. A fine style gives the view of fancy
its figures, its trees, or its palaces,
without a spot. ~ Robert Aris Willmott
Prose Style quotes by Robert Aris Willmott
Absurdity and anti - absurdity are the two poles of creative energy. ~ Karl Lagerfeld
Prose Style quotes by Karl Lagerfeld
We just think that we're being born, when we're born; (headfirst crying out of the smile of the womb, if we'd only known that it was all the same before getting involved in Samsara---saving motion and nervousness, not forsaking peace---I remember being forced out---to the discriminatory prickles and thorns of the world)--- We're still the same old substance, High Hearable Essence Light---(whatever it really is, & Empty)--- Unbornness is the above---

We just think that we're dying, when we die!---headfirst falling in the airplane, falling once again, from stage-emptiness to stage-emptiness---unborn and undying and undead---Birth and death not a dualism, no difference---same Dharmakaya Universal Essence---

No death, no birth, no error, no "prose", but uncreated single substance essence flow of transitory unreal words riding an unreal ride across the memory of the unreal word,

I can't say that the world is
Not that it is not -
Because it is just from Mind ~ Jack Kerouac
Prose Style quotes by Jack Kerouac
My style is an extension of acting and an outcome of some serious lessons I picked up learning when I did theatre in my early days. ~ Kapil Sharma
Prose Style quotes by Kapil Sharma

Prose Style quotes by Various
When I arrived, I didn't understand London customers perfectly, but we've developed the right style with the right price, and step by step, I'm in harmony with London. ~ Alain Ducasse
Prose Style quotes by Alain Ducasse
Language is properly the servant of thought, but not unfrequently becomes its master. The conceptions of a feeble writer are greatly modified by his style; a man of vigorous powers makes his style bend to his conceptions. ~ William Benton Clulow
Prose Style quotes by William Benton Clulow
Universal education through schooling is not feasible. It would be no more feasible if it were attempted by means of alternative institutions built on the style of present schools. Neither new attitudes of teachers toward their pupils nor the proliferation of educational hardware or software (in classroom or bedroom), nor finally the attempt to expand the pedagogue's responsibility until it engulfs his pupils' lifetimes will deliver universal education. The current search for new educational funnels must be reversed into the search for their institutional inverse: educational webs which heighten the opportunity for each one to transform each moment of his living into one of learning, sharing, and caring. ~ Ivan Illich
Prose Style quotes by Ivan Illich
Some artists are bound to an image: Bob Marley has dreadlocks, Matisyahu has a beard. But that's a reminder that the whole thing is not about style. It's about music. ~ Matisyahu
Prose Style quotes by Matisyahu
That's kind of a leap, but the Russian judge gave you a nine point five for style, so okay. ~ Rachel Caine
Prose Style quotes by Rachel Caine
Wherever she sought solitude, she was never alone. Suddenly that wasn't a bad thing. There was safety in numbers greater than one and sanity in knowing that everyone healed. If everyone has scars, there are two choices. Bleed to death slowly or stitch yourself together. ~ Nicki Salcedo
Prose Style quotes by Nicki Salcedo
I'm not a singer, a walking instrument like Aretha Franklin. When you get an Iggy Pop record, you don't get "Iggy Sings." I am also a style of music, an approach. ~ Iggy Pop
Prose Style quotes by Iggy Pop
A little rain, a little blood. Black fingernails in August; and going berserk, going bananas. As if entrapped in a tropical heatwave, with dozens of whirlwinds swirling in one's mind, one thinks of a way out, or a way in: out of the scorching bosom of a volcano, and in – into the centre of a raging hurricane. And tracing the labyrinthine ways of your mind, the haphazard vagaries of your thoughts at ease, the odds and ends of your mental surplus you carelessly throw at the world, one wants to be at a loss, in a maze; amazed, and amazingly unabashed. ~ Adam Zagajewski
Prose Style quotes by Adam Zagajewski
I decided to start embracing and wearing my natural hair, but there was only one problem; I didn't know what to do with it or how to style it. Growing up, all I knew was my relaxed, processed hair, so I had to go through this learning phase. ~ Kimberly Elise
Prose Style quotes by Kimberly Elise
The primitive style makes nature look like stage scenery. ~ E. J. Hughes
Prose Style quotes by E. J. Hughes
Look at someone like Steve Jobs. His look wasn't very special - black turtleneck and jeans - but he had style. He looked the same, and you knew it was him when you saw him. Plus, he was a very smart person, which is also very attractive. His style was simple, not distracting, and very strong. ~ Carine Roitfeld
Prose Style quotes by Carine Roitfeld
Being yourself is far more important than the style of handbag you choose to carry. ~ Lisa Robinson
Prose Style quotes by Lisa Robinson
And the Light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not
John 1:5
And the Light shineth in darkness; and she comprehended it not
Her 7:2013
The Light still shines in darkness; and she did not know this
She 6:2014
His Light continue to shine in the darkness; and she did not recognize him
We 5:2015 ~ Gregory C. Warner
Prose Style quotes by Gregory C. Warner
Many billboards and magazine ads have resorted to showing isolated body parts rather than full-body portraits of models using or wearing products. This style of photography, known in the industry as abstract representation, allows the viewer to see himself in the advertisement, rather than the model. ~ Douglas Rushkoff
Prose Style quotes by Douglas Rushkoff
I write a book at least three times-once to understand it, the second time to improve the prose, and a third to compel it to say what it still must say. ~ Bernard Malamud
Prose Style quotes by Bernard Malamud
The unity in any painter's work arises from the fact that a person, brought to a desperate situation, will behave in a certain way ... style. ~ Frank Auerbach
Prose Style quotes by Frank Auerbach
Sometimes you see women that don't realize that age is changing your style, and they don't change. ~ Carolina Herrera
Prose Style quotes by Carolina Herrera
Style in painting is the same as in writing,-a power over materials, whether words or colors. ~ James Ellis
Prose Style quotes by James Ellis
Someone recently pointed out how much Barack Obama's style and strategies resemble those of Latin American charismatic despots - the takeover of industries by demagogues who never ran a business, the rousing rhetoric of resentment addressed to the masses and the personal cult of the leader promoted by the media. But do we want to become the world's largest banana republic? ~ Thomas Sowell
Prose Style quotes by Thomas Sowell
The key to good style, far more than obeying any list of commandments, is to have a clear conception of the make-believe world in which you're pretending to communicate. ~ Steven Pinker
Prose Style quotes by Steven Pinker
Since Tezuka animated for Disney and was influenced by their animation and that of Max Fleischer. Tezuka's design was reminiscent of the Disney style of that era, but the nose was made smaller and the eyes slightly bigger, to show more emotion. ~ AlphaManga
Prose Style quotes by AlphaManga
First I was a European-style player, then I was a downtown 'noise guy,' and now some people call me an Americana guy. ~ Bill Frisell
Prose Style quotes by Bill Frisell
You could say that too much time has passed for us to take up new styles so it's entirely up to us to improve. I personally wanted to produce a voice that's different from when I did "V.V.I.P" so I put a lot of effort into finding my voice. ~ Seungri
Prose Style quotes by Seungri
Avery turned and smiled. "There's a huge party tonight, and you're invited. We're celebrating New Year's in style."
I looked down at my sling. "I don't know. Navy-blue nylon isn't exactly a trend. ~ Mara Purnhagen
Prose Style quotes by Mara Purnhagen
One of the most important differences I see between prose and poetry is the music of the language. ~ Pattiann Rogers
Prose Style quotes by Pattiann Rogers
I play American and World music, Texas style. ~ Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown
Prose Style quotes by Clarence
Change for someone today and tomorrow you will hear them say, "You are not the same. ~ Akash Lakhotia
Prose Style quotes by Akash Lakhotia
STYLE IS NOT HOW YOU WRITE IT IS HOW YOUDO NOT WRITE LIKE ANYONE ELSE ~ Charles Ghigna
Prose Style quotes by Charles Ghigna
I would really like to have had the guts and the energy and so on to be able to write about, you know, people having battles with the DHSS. But I ... I haven't. They're dull things. I mean, I'm an arty person. OK, I write overblown, purple, self-indulgent prose. So fucking what? ~ Angela Carter
Prose Style quotes by Angela Carter
In the Orient the ultimate divine mystery is sought beyond all human categories of thought and feeling, beyond names and forms, and absolutely beyond any such concept as of a merciful or wrathful personality, chooser of one people over another, comforter of folk who pray, and destroyer of those who do not. Such anthropomorphic attributions of human sentiments and thoughts to a mystery beyond thought is - from the point of view of Indian thought - a style of religion for children. Whereas the final sense of all adult teaching is to the point that the mystery transcendent of categories, names and forms, sentiments and thought, is to be realized as the ground of one's own very being. ~ Joseph Campbell
Prose Style quotes by Joseph Campbell
Style is the gossamer on which the seeds of truth float through the world. ~ George Bancroft
Prose Style quotes by George Bancroft
When I'm describing wartime activities or violence I don't want to be too ornate, to prettify the picture. Once we trace them to the present, the prose becomes denser. ~ Chang-rae Lee
Prose Style quotes by Chang-rae Lee
I am an Air Force brat who grew up at various Air Force bases. I changed six schools in about five years and got stability for the first time when I was sent to a boarding school, Rishi Valley. I lived outside of a cantonment-style living and was among an eclectic mix of kids and got exposed to books and other things. ~ Kapil Sharma
Prose Style quotes by Kapil Sharma
I eat kung pao chicken like it's going out of style, but I'm pretty sure I don't have an Asian cell in my body. I love Toni Morrison novels although I'm not black. I'm straight and I'm happily married. The reason I work here is because I think you deserve that, too. ~ Jodi Picoult
Prose Style quotes by Jodi Picoult
I sought to reform minstrelsy among refined people by making words suitable to their taste, instead of the trashy and really offensive words which belong to some songs of that order ... Some of my songs should be performed in a pathetic, not a comic style. ~ Stephen Foster
Prose Style quotes by Stephen Foster
As for my personal style, I like comfort a lot, like jeans and T-shirts. Having been a trainer for so long, I spend a lot of my days in tank tops, shorts, and T-shirts. Still, I do like the occasions where I get to wear suits and make that a thing. ~ Matt McGorry
Prose Style quotes by Matt McGorry
My anatomy was self-taught. I feel everybody has that ability. I drew instinctively. Mine was an instinctive style. ~ Jack Kirby
Prose Style quotes by Jack Kirby
Shelby looked over to see Andrew silently mouthing syllables to himself, as if he were part of an ecstatic rite. He grinned as he bit fricatives and tongued plosives. He was tasting English origins, mulling over words ripped from bronze-smelling hoards. Words that had slept beneath centuries of dust and small rain, sharp and bright as scale mail. Poetry had never moved her quite so much as drama. She loved the shock of colloquy, the beat and treble of words doing what they had to on stage. Andrew preferred the echo of poems buried alive. ~ Bailey Cunningham
