What I was most curious about was why Armstrong, a top U.S. Navy test pilot, flying the most advanced aircraft in the world, would want to join the astronaut corps in 1962, which included chimpanzees and monkeys. ~ Douglas Brinkley
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Douglas Brinkley
On the far side of the bay was the command station that controlled the door, which was currently semi-open. Rather than the normal closed maw of steel, there was a network of pulsing gold veins crisscrossing the gaping mouth of black - a nitrogen membrane keeping the molecular air contained and pressurized while allowing aircraft to pass through. ~ April Adams
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by April Adams
I have seen the science I worshiped, and the aircraft I loved, destroying the civilization I expected them to serve. ~ Charles Lindbergh
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Charles Lindbergh
Don't have to see," the pilot grunted. "Olga knows the way."
"Funny name for an aircraft," Grace commented. "Is it after your wife?"
"My gun."
Grace stared at him. "You named your plane after a gun?"
"It was a very good gun. ~ Gordon Korman
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Gordon Korman
I made a written report which is still today in existence. I have a photocopy of it, and I am saying that in production this aircraft could perhaps substitute for three propeller- driven aircraft of the best existing type. This was my impression. ~ Adolf Galland
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Adolf Galland
Lots of TV shows say that they are like doing a movie every week, but 'JAG' truly was a huge show. Lots of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, like being launched off an aircraft carrier and being welcomed by military bases all over California. ~ Patrick Labyorteaux
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Patrick Labyorteaux
The passengers were on my aircraft, and I have to take responsibility for that. ~ Tony Fernandes
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Tony Fernandes
I use the word 'fat'. I use that word because that's what people are: they're fat. They're not bulky; they're not large, chunky, hefty or plump. And they're not big-boned. Dinosaurs were big-boned. These people are not overweight: this term somehow implies there is some correct weight ... There is no correct weight. Heavy is also a misleading term. An aircraft carrier is heavy; it's not fat. Only people are fat, and that's what fat people are! They're fat ! ~ George Carlin
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by George Carlin
If Helen had the face that launched a thousand ships, Kelly would have made those guys invent aircraft carriers. ~ Adam Cadre
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Adam Cadre
Turning the military-industrial complex is a little bit like turning a battleship, in an age in which smaller, faster ships with smaller crews launching unmanned aircraft is probably a better way to go. ~ David Rothkopf
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by David Rothkopf
Lentokonesuihkuturbiinimoottoriapumekaanikkoaliupseerioppilas (technical warrant officer trainee specialised in aircraft jet engines) ~ Tarja Moles
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Tarja Moles

Yes,I'm afraid you're right. Trial and error isn't a bad way to learn how to build an aircraft, but it can be a disastrous way to learn how to build a civilization. ~ Daniel Quinn
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Daniel Quinn
She and Don were taken to a hangar where a pair of F-15 fighter jets were waiting: his and hers, as it turned out. "Why?" Don asked uneasily. "We're taking you to the U.S.S. William Jefferson Clinton." "An aircraft carrier? ~ Thomas Waite
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Thomas Waite
I stand by this man (President George W. Bush). I stand by this man because he stands for things. Not only for things, he stands on things. Things like aircraft carriers and rubble and recently flooded city squares. And that sends a strong message, that no matter what happens to America, she will always rebound.. with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world. ~ Stephen Colbert
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Stephen Colbert
Most of us stand poised at the edge of brilliance, haunted by the knowledge of our proximity, yet still demonstrably on the wrong side of the line, our dealings with reality undermined by a range of minor yet critical psychological flaws (a little too much optimism, an unprocessed rebelliousness, a fatal impatience or sentimentality). We are like an exquisite high-speed aircraft which for lack of a tiny part is left stranded beside the runway, rendered slower than a tractor or bicycle. ~ Alain De Botton
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Alain De Botton
Failure of success is not race-related; it's not socioeconomics-related; it is really predictable, based on principles that are laid down by God the Creator by which we are supposed to function. If we find them and obey them, success becomes inevitable. That's why I was able to move from rats to 40,000 feet in the air in my own aircraft. ~ Myles Munroe
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Myles Munroe
A demonic horde. Upended sacks of beans. A hundred broken rosaries. There are a thousand metaphors and all of them are inadequate: forty bombs per aircraft, four hundred and eighty altogether, seventy-two thousand pounds of explosives. ~ Anthony Doerr
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Anthony Doerr
In 1982, a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft belonging to the Pakistani military left Urumqi, capital of the north-western Chinese province of Xinjiang, headed for Islamabad carrying five lead-lined, stainless steel boxes, inside each of which were 10 single-kilogram ingots of highly enriched uranium (HEU), enough for two atomic bombs.43 It ~ Andrew Small
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Andrew Small
After the Battle of Midway it was clear that the Pacific war would be won by planes launched from ships. Both Japan and the United States began crash programs to build aircraft carriers as fast as possible. During 1943 and 1944, Japan produced seven of these huge, costly vessels. In the same period, the United States produced ninety. ~ Ken Follett
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Ken Follett
2014 Raid in Northern Syria In an attempt to find kidnapped journalist James Foiley as well as other American hostages, Delta Forces operators were inserted into northern Syria on 04 July 2014. Per information from witnesses, after tearing down anti-aircraft weapons, the Delta Forces operators attacked an ISIS base. The ISIS base was torn down and all ISIS soldiers were killed at the cost of an American who sustained wounds during the operations. The operation was a failure since no hostages were found. ~ John Winters
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by John Winters
Christ. He was going to hell.
The thought should have helped with the erection. It didn't. He doubted anything would. Not even thoughts of the Colonel pushing him out of an aircraft from six thousand feet without a parachute was going to kill it. ~ Amy Andrews
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Amy Andrews
During the air war of 1944, a four-man combat crew on a B-17 bomber took a vow to never abandon one another no matter how desperate the situation. The aircraft was hit by flak during a mission and went into a terminal dive, and the pilot ordered everyone to bail out. The top turret gunner obeyed the order, but the ball turret gunner discovered that a piece of flak had jammed his turret and he could not get out. The other three men in his pact could have bailed out with the parachutes, but they stayed with him until the plan hit the ground and exploded. They all died. ~ Sebastian Junger
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Sebastian Junger
Washington is like a self-sealing tank on a military aircraft. When a bullet passes through, it closes up. ~ Dean Acheson
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Dean Acheson
I was brought up in the north of Scotland, and where I lived was so lowly populated, it was used as a low-flying area by the Air Force, so lots of exciting aircraft used to fly over my village. ~ David Mackay
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by David Mackay
They say he "hit a square" while flying his small aircraft; a situation in which it is impossible to tell up from down or earth from sky and that he lost his way. ~ Alice Walker
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Alice Walker
My father was a CPA. He worked hard in the aircraft industry, and would come home more and more infrequently. He was about to leave my mother, which he did when I was 15. ~ Jeremy Irons
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Jeremy Irons
If you travel as much as we do, you appreciate the improvements in aircraft design of less noise and more comfort - provided you don't travel in something called economy class, which sounds ghastly. ~ Prince Philip
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Prince Philip
I hate that phrase "the real world." Why is an aircraft factory more real than a university? Is it? ~ Richard Hugo
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Richard Hugo
We do hear perhaps too many accolades generally aimed at people like Steve Jobs. We have to remember that there are other classic things in life that we undervalue and take them for granted. If you think of the classic lines of the modern jet aircraft, it's really been there since early World War II. ~ Ian Anderson
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Ian Anderson
We have built a total of about 1250 of this aircraft, but only fifty were allowed to be used as fighters - as interceptors. And out of this fifty, there were never more than 25 operational. So we had only a very, very few. ~ Adolf Galland
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Adolf Galland
The painted aircraft took on sunlight and pulse. Sweeps of color, bands and spatters, airy washes, the force of saturated light - the whole thing oddly personal, a sense of one painter's hand moved by impulse and afterthought as much as by epic design. I hadn't expected to register such pleasure and sensation. The air was color-scrubbed, coppers and ochers burning off the metal skin of the aircraft to exchange with the framing desert. ~ Don DeLillo
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Don DeLillo
I was born in 1935, and as far back as I can remember, I was sketching designs. My first subject was an aircraft, which I imagined myself piloting. ~ Norman Foster
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Norman Foster
Flight, its upper and lower wings spread wide, its toy-car wheels resting lightly on the grass, its long tail tapering behind. The weather was fine with gentle breezes, and the little aircraft trembled in the wind, ~ Ken Follett
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Ken Follett
They inform them that an unidentified aircraft is not just heading toward the nation's capital, but rapidly approaching the P-56 prohibited airspace over the city ~ Paul W. Rea
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Paul W. Rea
It's easier for China to assert its maritime power by creating artificial islands in the South China Sea than by defying the U.S. Pacific Fleet with an aircraft carrier. ~ David Ignatius
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by David Ignatius
An aircraft which is used by wealthy people on their expense accounts, whose fares are subsidized by much poorer taxpayers. ~ Denis Healey
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Denis Healey
Navy: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision. Civilian: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to South to avoid a collision. Navy: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert your course. Civilian: No, I say again, divert your course. Navy: This is the aircraft carrier Enterprise. We are a large warship of the US Navy. Divert your course now!! Civilian: This is a lighthouse. Your call. Canadian naval radio conversation38 ~ John D. Barrow
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by John D. Barrow
A drone is often preferred for missions that are too "dull, dirty, or dangerous" for manned aircraft."

PROLOGUE

The graffiti was in Spanish, neon colors highlighting the varicose cracks in the wall. It smelled of urine and pot. The front door was metal with four bolt locks and the windows were frosted glass, embedded with chicken wire. They swung out and up like big fake eye-lashes held up with a notched adjustment bar.

This was a factory building on the near west side of Cleveland in an industrial area on the Cuyahoga River known in Ohio as The Flats.

First a sweatshop garment factory, then a warehouse for imported cheeses then a crack den for teenage potheads. It was now headquarters for Magic Slim, the only pimp in Cleveland with his own film studio and training facility.

Her name was Cosita, she was eighteen looking like fourteen. One of nine children from El Chorillo. a dangerous poverty stricken barrio on the outskirts of Panama City. Her brother, Javier, had been snatched from the streets six months ago, he was thirteen and beautiful.

Cosita had a high school education but earned here degree on the streets of Panama.

Interpol, the world's largest international police organization, had recruited Cosita at seventeen. She was smart, street savvy, motivated and very pretty. Just what Interpol was looking for.

Cosita would become a Drone! ~ Nick Hahn
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Nick Hahn
"When you have a fire in an aircraft, there's no place to go, exactly, there's no - and you can't find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don't open. I don't know why they don't do that. It's a real problem." ~ Mitt Romney
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Mitt Romney
Law Number XVI: In the year 2054, the entire defense budget will purchase just one aircraft. This aircraft will have to be shared by the Air Force and Navy 3-1/2 days each per week except for leap year, when it will be made available to the Marines for the extra day. ~ Norman Ralph Augustine
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Norman Ralph Augustine
Isn't a policy of conventional weapons, with the terrible bombs raining down, with the missiles, with the aircraft, with the submarines, with the torpedoes, with the tanks, with chemical weapons - isn't that based on the possibility of threat? ~ Margaret Thatcher
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Margaret Thatcher
Strangely enough, politics may just be the one realm in which having kids imposes no penalty on women. Kids are practically a necessity. For scientists, or Supreme Court justices, or chief executives, or the woman who wants to learn to fly F-l8s off an aircraft carrier, it works differently. ~ Stacy Schiff
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Stacy Schiff
The entire point of a new theory is that it is unprecedented; the first man to invent a jet aircraft could scarcely submit examples of jet aircraft flying in the past. ~ Stefan Molyneux
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Stefan Molyneux
I have been
hanging here
headless
for so long
that the body has forgotten
why
or where or when it
happened
and the toes
walk along in shoes
that do not
care

and although
the fingers
slice things and
hold things and
move things and
touch
things
such as
oranges
apples
onions
books
bodies
I am no longer
reasonably sure
what these things
are

they are mostly
like
lamplight and
fog

then often the hands will
go to the
lost head
and hold the head
like the hands of a
child
around a ball
a block
air and wood -
no teeth
no thinking part

and when a window
blows open
to a
church
hill
woman
dog
or something singing

the fingers of the hand
are senseless to vibration
because they have no
ears
senseless to color because
they have no
eyes
senseless to smell
without a nose

they country goes by as
nonsense
the continents

the daylights and evenings
shine
on my dirty
fingernails

and in some mirror
my face
a block to vanish
scuffed part of a child's
ball

while everywhere
moves
worms and aircraft
fires on the land
tall violets in sanctity
my hands let go let go
Charles Bukowski
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Charles Bukowski
What in the hell is going on around here?" she yelled. "Could you guys keep it down to aircraft-carrier noise? ~ Rachel Caine
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by Rachel Caine
He was the first to reach the aircraft, and he went for the door that by some miracle was facing outward and not into the concrete wall. Wrenching the thing open, and getting out his flashlight, he didn't know what to expect inside - smoke? Fumes? Blood and body parts?
Zsadist was sitting rigid in a backward-facing seat, his big body strapped in, both hands locked on the armrests. The Brother was staring straight ahead and not blinking.
"Have we stopped moving?" he said hoarsely ~ J.R. Ward
Mothballed Aircraft quotes by J.R. Ward
Go up in a big airplane. Go high enough, and you will see the radiation rainbow interference ring around the shadow of the airplane on the clouds below. ~ Steven Magee
