But in wielding identity as a blade, we have lost it as a lens, blinding ourselves in a bid for political advantage. In the studies I have directed, and in my international experience speaking with women in prostitution, the majority of women in prostitution come from marginalized groups with a history of sexual abuse, drug and alcohol dependencies, poverty or financial disadvantage, lack of education, and histories of other vulnerabilities.
