In 1969 the Khmer Rouge numbered only about 4,000. By 1975 their numbers were enough to defeat the government forces. Their victory was greatly helped by the American attack on Cambodia, which was carried out as an extension of the Vietnam War. In 1970 a military coup led by Lon Nol, possibly with American support, overthrew the government of Prince Sihanouk, and American and South Vietnamese troops entered Cambodia.

One estimate is that 600,000 people, nearly 10 per cent of the Cambodian population, were killed in this extension of the war. Another estimate puts the deaths from the American bombing at 1000,000 peasants. From 1972 to 1973, the quantity of bombs dropped on Cambodia was well over three times that dropped on Japan in the Second World War.

The decision to bomb was taken by Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger and was originally justified on the grounds that North Vietnamese bases had been set up in Cambodia. The intention (according to a later defence by Kissinger's aide, Peter W. Rodman) was to target only places with few Cambodians: 'From the Joint Chiefs' memorandum of April 9, 1969, the White House selected as targets only six base areas minimally populated by civilians. The target areas were given the codenames BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER, SUPPER, SNACK, and DESSERT; the overall programme was given the name MENU.' Rodman makes the point that SUPPER, for instance, had troop concentrations, anti-aircraft, artillery, rocket and mortar positions, ~ Jonathan Glover
Henry quotes by Jonathan Glover

Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau

Henry quotes by Henry Ward Beecher

Henry quotes by Joseph Henry

Henry quotes by Henry Suso
No parent ought to punish a child except with a view to the child's good. And in order to do good to a child through his punishment, a parent must religiously refrain from punishing him while angry. ~ Henry Clay Trumbull
Henry quotes by Henry Clay Trumbull
As Americans, we shouldn't like bailouts. Where I come from, if someone takes a risk and they're going to make the profit from that risk, they shouldn't have the taxpayer pay for the losses. ~ Henry Paulson
Henry quotes by Henry Paulson
I've been through periods of stress, turbulence in the market for over the course of my career, various times, and never in any of those other periods have we had the advantage of a strong economy underpinning the markets. ~ Henry Paulson
Henry quotes by Henry Paulson
I can never forget that Chinese student I knew in Paris - Mr. Tcheou, I think it was. One day, upon asking him if he had ever read Hamlet, he answered: "You mean that novel by Jack London? ~ Henry Miller
Henry quotes by Henry Miller
There is so much that is deaf and dumb in man, and so much that is paralyzed, so much that is shrunken, that nothing short of a miraculous touch of re-creation can make them at death perfect beings. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Henry quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
I think China will do nothing to obstruct it, and they probably will go along with it. ~ Henry A. Kissinger
Henry quotes by Henry A. Kissinger
I am not immune to the lure of a signed record, flier or set list. The fact that your music heroes potentially had, in their own hands, the record you now have in yours is kind of cool. When the musician has departed, it can give the thing a unique power. ~ Henry Rollins
Henry quotes by Henry Rollins
Dear Night! this world's defeat; The stop to busy fools; care's check and curb; The day of spirits; my soul's calm retreat Which none disturb! Christ's progress, and His prayer-time; The hours to which high Heaven cloth chime. ~ Henry Vaughan

Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Contempt of others is the truest symptom of a base and bad heart,
while it suggests itself to the mean and the vile, and tickles there little fancy on every occasion, it never enters the great and good mind but on the strongest motives; nor is it then a welcome guest,
affording only an uneasy sensation, and bringing always with it a mixture of concern and compassion. ~ Henry Fielding
Henry quotes by Henry Fielding
Americans have a tendency to believe that when there's a problem there must be a solution. ~ Henry Kissinger
Henry quotes by Henry Kissinger
Her little hands, Crumb. Her little paws, like a child's. She has no guile in her. And she never speaks. And if she does I hate to bend my head to hear what she says. And in the pause I can hear my heart. Her little bits of embroidery, her scraps of silk, her halcyon sleeves, she cut out of the cloth some admirer gave her once, some poor boy struck with love for her...and yet she has never succumbed. Her little sleeves, her seed pearl necklace...she has nothing...she expects nothing...' A tear at last sneaks from Henry's eye, meanders down his cheek and vanishes into the mottled grey and ginger of his beard. ~ Hilary Mantel
Henry quotes by Hilary Mantel
The foundation of the search for truth must be the ability to notice one's own ignorance. Acknowledging ignorance is a beautiful feature that science and spirituality hold in common. BUMMER rejects it.

Henry quotes by Henry Flynt
I enjoy helping. I like doing benefits and things like that, but don't feel the need to be thanked or even meet the people I am doing the benefit for. ~ Henry Rollins
Henry quotes by Henry Rollins
I come from a minimum wage working world, as we all did for at least some part of our lives, and that is never out of my rearview. I've never forgotten how much your feet hurt after you've stood on them for like 12 hours. And how the drudgery of a job you hate craps on your entire life; how you treat other people, how you treat yourself, and it really was getting to me. ~ Henry Rollins
Henry quotes by Henry Rollins
It is not my business to be petitioning the Governor or the Legislature any more than it is theirs to petition me; and if they should not hear my petition, what should I do then? But in this case the State has provided no way: its very Constitution is the evil. This ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Herein Moses was a type of Christ, who stands between God and man, to show us the word of the Lord, a blessed days-man, that has laid his hand upon us both, so that we may both hear from God and speak to him without trembling. ~ Matthew Henry
Henry quotes by Matthew Henry
Accept nothing nearly right or good enough ~ Henry Royce
Henry quotes by Henry Royce
I suffered most inconvenience from the difficulty of getting news from the civilised world down river, from the irregularity of receipt of letters, parcels of books and periodicals, and towards the latter part of my residence from ill health arising from bad and insufficient food. ~ Henry Walter Bates
Henry quotes by Henry Walter Bates
A mother's heart is the child's schoolroom. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Henry quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
From the little reading I had done I had observed that the men who were most in life, who were molding life, who were life itself, ate little, slept little, owned little or nothing. They had no illusions about duty, or the perpetuation of their kith and kin, or the preservation of the State. They were interested in truth and in truth alone. They recognized only one kind of activity - creation. ~ Henry Miller
Henry quotes by Henry Miller
One thing I don't want around me is a military intellectual. I don't have to worry about you on that score. ~ Henry A. Kissinger
Henry quotes by Henry A. Kissinger
Today the earth speaks with resonance and clearness and every ear in every civilized country of the world is attuned to its wonderful message of the creative evolution of man, except the ear of William Jennings Bryan; he alone remains stone-deaf, he alone by his own resounding voice drowns the eternal speech of nature. ~ Henry Fairfield Osborn
Henry quotes by Henry Fairfield Osborn
From the time you wake up until the moment you go to bed it's all a lie, all a sham and a swindle. Everybody knows it, and everybody collaborates in the perpetuation of the hoax. That's why we look so goddamned disgusting to one another. ~ Henry Miller
Henry quotes by Henry Miller
Large solid rockets have never been a very good way to build launchers that might have crews on top, especially because of the problems in getting the crew away from a failing launcher. ~ Henry Spencer
Henry quotes by Henry Spencer
Then there was David, lording it up at Buckingham Palace, thinking he was king of the shit heap. That guy was definitely nuts, like every dictator that had gone before him. Nero, Caligula, Henry the Eighth, Napoleon, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Margaret Thatcher, Colonel Gaddafi, that crazy North Korean bastard who was in Team America, Kim Jong whatever. ~ Charlie Higson
Henry quotes by Charlie Higson
Every success is the mother of countless others. ~ Henry Ford
Henry quotes by Henry Ford
All things are symbols. ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Henry quotes by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Don't be afraid to let go of your past…
…it's only but a distraction to your present. ~ Abdulazeez Henry Musa
Henry quotes by Abdulazeez Henry Musa
My bravery however was the effect of assurance for could I have believed the current report, I should have fled as fast as any man, no man can possibly have a greater reluctance to an intimacy with Sir William Howe than my Self. ~ Henry Laurens
Henry quotes by Henry Laurens
You can do a great many things if you're rich which would be severely criticised if you were poor. You can go and come, you can travel alone, you can have your own establishment: I mean of course if you'll take a companion - some decayed gentlewoman, with a darned cashmere and dyed hair, who paints on velvet. ~ Henry James
Henry quotes by Henry James
From the beginning it was never anything but chaos: it was a fluid which rnvcloped me, which I breathed in through the gills. In the substrata, where the moon shone steady and opaque, it was smooth and fecundating; above it was a jangle and a discord. In everything I (plickly saw the opposite, the contradiction, and between the real and the unreal the irony, the paradox. I was my own worst enemy. There was nothing I wished to do which I could just as well not do. Even as a child, when I lacked for nothing, I wanted to die: I wanted to surrender because I saw no sense in struggling. I felt that nothing would be proved, substantiated, added or subtracted by continuing an existence which I had not asked for. Everybody around me was a failure, or if not a failure, ridiculous. Especially the successful ones. The successful ones bored·me to tears. I was sympathetic to a fault, but it was not sympathy that made me so. It was a purely negative quality, a weakness which blossomed at the mere sight of human misery. I never helped anyone expecting that it would do any good; I helped because I was helpless to do otherwise. To want to change the condition of affairs seemed futile to me; nothing would be altered, I was convinced, except by a change of heart, and who could change the hearts of men? ~ Henry Miller
Henry quotes by Henry Miller
The great merit of gold is precisely that it is scarce; that its quantity is limited by nature; that it is costly to discover, to mine, and to process; and that it cannot be created by political fiat or caprice. ~ Henry Hazlitt
Henry quotes by Henry Hazlitt
Life is a temporary condition, Henry. And it's uncertain. That's why you have to seize chances when you find them. Pursue what you want. Take risks. Live, love...all of it. Every last one of us is going to die, but if we don't live as we truly want, if we're not with the one we want to be with, we're dead already. ~ Martha Brockenbrough
Henry quotes by Martha Brockenbrough
I think that I'm running from something I heard on the radio That everybody's working for the weekend When does the weekend start? What comes at the end of the week? The end? Picture a tired dog chasing its tail ~ Henry Rollins
Henry quotes by Henry Rollins
The frantic desire to live, to live at any cost, is not a result of the life rhythm in us, but of the death rhythm. ~ Henry Miller
Henry quotes by Henry Miller
No matter what you want to achieve in life, if you don't make an effort, you'll never achieve it". ~ Abdulazeez Henry Musa
Henry quotes by Abdulazeez Henry Musa
As academics we have pretty good judgment about the quality of institutions that cannot simply be measured by counting the number of papers published or patents received. Outsiders who swoop in to count beans and make up lists based on statistics have little sense of what excellence is. ~ Henry Rosovsky
Henry quotes by Henry Rosovsky
A bit of tolerance is worth a megabyte of flamming. ~ Henry Spencer
Henry quotes by Henry Spencer
And then Jesus says, 'Well, watch this' - "
"Really? Well, watch this?"
"That's biblical language."
"If your Bible is written by Henry Montague. ~ Mackenzi Lee
Henry quotes by Mackenzi Lee
What if I can't find it? What if I can't find that particular pumping-station? The breath tore in and out of his lungs, hot and bloody-tasting in the back of his throat. A stitch was sinking into his side. His buttocks sang where the rock had hit him. Beverly had said Henry and his friends meant to kill them, and Ben believed it now, yes he did. He came to ~ Stephen King
Henry quotes by Stephen King
I think, what has this day brought me, and what have I given it? ~ Henry Moore
Henry quotes by Henry Moore
It is not what we do but how we feel doing what we do that matters. ~ Abdulazeez Henry Musa
Henry quotes by Abdulazeez Henry Musa
The wonderful purity of nature at this season is a most pleasing fact ... In the bare fields and tinkling woods, see what virtue survives. In the coldest and bleakest places, the warmest charities still maintain a foothold. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Loving is like music. Some instruments can go up two octaves, some four, and some all the way from black thunder to sharp lightning. As some of them are susceptible only of melody, so some hearts can sing but one song of love, while others will fun in a full choral harmony. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Henry quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
Setting boundaries isn't an alternative to loving your child. It is a means of loving her. ~ Henry Cloud
Henry quotes by Henry Cloud
The monstrous thing is not that men have created roses out of this dung heap, but that, for some reason or other, they should want roses. For some reason or other man looks for the miracle, and to accomplish it he will wade through blood. He will debauch himself with ideas, he will reduce himself to a shadow if for only one second of his life he can close his eyes to the hideousness of reality. Everything is endured- disgrace, humiliation, poverty, war, crime, ennui- in the belief that overnight something will occur, a miracle, which will render life tolerable. And all the while a meter is running inside and there is no hand that can reach in there and shut it off. ~ Henry Miller
Henry quotes by Henry Miller
There is no liberty to men whose passions are stronger than their religious feelings; there is no liberty to men in whom ignorance predominates over knowledge; there is no liberty to men who know not how to govern themselves. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Henry quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
The notion that we can dismiss the views of all previous thinkers surely leaves no basis for the hope that our own work will prove of any value to others. ~ Henry Hazlitt
Henry quotes by Henry Hazlitt
China has had a long and complex history and has managed to evolve its own culture for 4,000 years. It therefore not necessarily true that we know exactly what is best for the internal structure of China. ~ Henry A. Kissinger
Henry quotes by Henry A. Kissinger
Time plays no role in the life of one man - the subtle consciousness of it floating past me is more than enough. Years, months, days, hours, minutes, seconds - what does it matter? Floating by, it rubs against my skin, face, and hair - wearing me down, yet polishing me all the while. Time is like fine grains of sand in a desert storm. At first, you don't pay any attention to it, but the more it hits you in the face, the more aware of it you become, the more annoying it gets until, one day, you find yourself suffocating. The weight of it eventually bends your spine, until you are crawling on your hands and knees, unable to stand straight. Then comes the time to crawl back into the womb, crawl inside and wait for rebirth. ~ Henry Martin
Henry quotes by Henry Martin
The things required for prosperous labor, prosperous manufactures, and prosperous commerce are three. First, liberty; second, liberty; third, liberty. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Henry quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
He studied cities as women study their reflections. ~ O. Henry
Henry quotes by O. Henry
Because in this view the domestic principles of an Islamic state were divinely ordained, non-Muslim political entities were illegitimate; they could never be accepted by Muslim states as truly equal counterparts. A peaceful world order depended on the ability to forge and expand a unitary Islamic entity, not on an equilibrium of competing parts. ~ Henry Kissinger
Henry quotes by Henry Kissinger
A modern, autonomous, and thoroughly trained Air Force in being at all times will not alone be sufficient, but without it there can be no national security. ~ Henry H. Arnold
Henry quotes by Henry H. Arnold
In 'Henry V,' the story of the assumption of true and responsible leadership by Henry I think is hard-won. He has to lose friends; he has to risk his life. ~ Kenneth Branagh
Henry quotes by Kenneth Branagh
The lakes are something which you are unprepared for; they lie up so high, exposed to the light, and the forest is diminished to a fine fringe on their edges, with here and there a blue mountain, like amethyst jewels set around some jewel of the first water, - so anterior, so superior, to all the changes that are to take place on their shores, even now civil and refined, and fair as they can ever be. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Happiness is inward, and not outward; and so, it does not depend on what we have, but on what we are. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Henry quotes by Henry Van Dyke
Let us put ourselves into His hands, and not be startled though He leads us by a strange way, a mirabilis via, as the Church speaks. Let us be sure He will lead us right, that He will bring us to that which is, not indeed what we think best, nor what is best for another, but what is best for us. ~ John Henry Newman
Henry quotes by John Henry Newman
Money is not required to buy one necessity of the soul. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Farmers are respectable and interesting to me in proportion as they are poor. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
He had long decided that abundant laughter should be the embellishment of the remainder of his days. ~ Henry James
Henry quotes by Henry James
Henry, this isn't about us. I mean it is, but they don't define you by the button you wear. They define you by what you do, by what your actions say about you. And coming here, despite your parents, says a lot to them- and me. And they're Americans first. They don't see you as the enemy. They see you as a person. ~ Jamie Ford
Henry quotes by Jamie Ford
Always keep a window in the attic open; not just cracked: open. ~ Henry James
Henry quotes by Henry James
We are to learn our duty from the Lord, and then we are to act in all diligence, never being lazy or slothful. The pattern is simple but not easy to follow. We are so easily distracted. ~ Henry B. Eyring
Henry quotes by Henry B. Eyring
When you're kept out of the adult world, it's a blessing in disguise. ~ Henry Rollins
Henry quotes by Henry Rollins
It is the business of a virtuous clergy to censure vice in every appearance of it. ~ Patrick Henry
Henry quotes by Patrick Henry
Blessed are the people whose leaders can look destiny in the eye without flinching but also without attempting to play God ~ Henry Kissinger
Henry quotes by Henry Kissinger
The quickest way to detect error in analogy is to carry it out as far as it will go - and further. Every analogy will break down somewhere. Any analogy if carried out far enough becomes absurd. ~ Henry Hazlitt
Henry quotes by Henry Hazlitt
Let go of the past and live the future ... Live the life you imagined. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Notwithstanding much cant and hypocrisy - chaff which I find it difficult to separate from my wheat, but for which I am as sorry as any man - I will breathe freely and stretch myself in this respect, it is such a relief to both the moral and physical system; and I am resolved that I will not through humility become the devil's attorney. I will endeavor to speak a good word for the truth. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Some men think that the globe is a sponge that God puts into their hands to squeeze for their own garden or flower-pot. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Henry quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
On the one hand, there is no reason that a black person needs to live a portion of his or her life being concerned about the people of color around him. On the other hand, if you don't you're crazy. ~ Henry Hampton
Henry quotes by Henry Hampton
A private meeting with Hoover is like sitting in a both of ink. ~ Henry L. Stimson
Henry quotes by Henry L. Stimson
There have been times when the church seemed afraid, but she is no longer. Analyze, dissect, use your microscope or your spectrum till the last atom of matter is reached; reflect and refine till the last element of thought is made clear; the church now knows with the certainty of science what she once knew only by the certainty of faith, that you will find enthroned behind all thought and matter only one central idea
that idea which the church has never ceased to embody
I AM! ~ Henry Adams
Henry quotes by Henry Adams
The traveler must be born again on the road, and earn a passport from the elements. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Call it precious and go to hell, but I believe a story can be wrecked by a faulty rhythm in a sentence - especially if it occurs toward the end - or a mistake in paragraphing, even punctuation. Henry James is the maestro of the semicolon. Hemingway is a first-rate paragrapher. From the point of view of ear, Virginia Woolf never wrote a bad sentence. I don't mean to imply that I successfully practice what I preach. I try, that's all. ~ Truman Capote
Henry quotes by Truman Capote
I cannot believe that our factory system is the best mode by which men may get clothing. The condition of the operatives is becoming every day more like that of the English; and it cannot be wondered at, since, as far as I have heard or observed, the principal object is, not that mankind may be well and honestly clad, but, unquestionably, that the corporations may be enriched. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
The light of his plural pronoun was sufficiently reflected in his companion's face as he again met it; and he completed his demonstration. ~ Henry James
Henry quotes by Henry James
This life is not for complaint, but for satisfaction. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry quotes by Henry David Thoreau
To wait on God is to live a life of desire towards him, delight in him, dependence on him, and devotedness to him. ~ Matthew Henry
Henry quotes by Matthew Henry
Henceforth the adequacy of any military establishment will be tested by its ability to preserve the peace. ~ Henry A. Kissinger
Henry quotes by Henry A. Kissinger
I think right then he could've told me he was the one who spread out the stars and I would have been neither surprised nor any more impressed than I already was. ~ Emily Henry
Henry quotes by Emily Henry
We can't buy one minute of time with cash; if we could, rich people would live longer. ~ O. Henry
Henry quotes by O. Henry
So quietly flows the Seine that
one hardly notices its presence. It is always there, quiet and unobtrusive, like a great
artery running through the human body. In the wonderful peace that fell over me
itseemed as if I had climbed to the top of a high mountain; for a little while I would be
able to look around me, to take in the meaning of the landscape.
Human beings make a strange fauna and flora. From a distance they appear
negligible; close up they are apt to appear ugly and malicious. More than anything they
need to be surrounded with sufficient space – space even more than time.
The sun is setting. I feel this river flowing through meits past, its ancient soil, the
changing climate. The hills gently girdle it about: its course is fixed. ~ Henry Miller
