In 1969 the Khmer Rouge numbered only about 4,000. By 1975 their numbers were enough to defeat the government forces. Their victory was greatly helped by the American attack on Cambodia, which was carried out as an extension of the Vietnam War. In 1970 a military coup led by Lon Nol, possibly with American support, overthrew the government of Prince Sihanouk, and American and South Vietnamese troops entered Cambodia.

One estimate is that 600,000 people, nearly 10 per cent of the Cambodian population, were killed in this extension of the war. Another estimate puts the deaths from the American bombing at 1000,000 peasants. From 1972 to 1973, the quantity of bombs dropped on Cambodia was well over three times that dropped on Japan in the Second World War.

The decision to bomb was taken by Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger and was originally justified on the grounds that North Vietnamese bases had been set up in Cambodia. The intention (according to a later defence by Kissinger's aide, Peter W. Rodman) was to target only places with few Cambodians: 'From the Joint Chiefs' memorandum of April 9, 1969, the White House selected as targets only six base areas minimally populated by civilians. The target areas were given the codenames BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER, SUPPER, SNACK, and DESSERT; the overall programme was given the name MENU.' Rodman makes the point that SUPPER, for instance, had troop concentrations, anti-aircraft, artillery, rocket and mortar positions, ~ Jonathan Glover
Richard Nixon quotes by Jonathan Glover
I have characterized Nixon as a loner, a cold man with great self-confidence and a one-track mind centered on the advancement of Richard Nixon. ~ Barry Goldwater
Richard Nixon quotes by Barry Goldwater
When he (Richard Nixon) took the oath of office, he pledged to be the president for 100% of the people, and I challenge the president to prove that he is being the president for 100% of the people. ~ Jackie Robinson
Richard Nixon quotes by Jackie Robinson
I suspect, for example, that the dishonor that now shrouds Richard Nixon results not from the fact that he lied but that on television he looked like a liar. Which, if true, should bring no comfort to anyone, not even veteran Nixon-haters. For the alternative possibilities are that one may look like a liar but be telling the truth; or even worse, look like a truth-teller but in fact be lying. As ~ Neil Postman
Richard Nixon quotes by Neil Postman
There's a basic law, Klein's second, or third, or fourth law of politics in the TV age, which is warm always beats cold, with the exception of Richard Nixon. The nicer guy usually wins. ~ Joe Klein
Richard Nixon quotes by Joe Klein
The government paid the family of Richard Nixon $18 million for papers, tape recordings and other materials seized after Watergate. ~ Dexter Scott King
Richard Nixon quotes by Dexter Scott King
Even now, more than 30 years later, I still judge people on the basis of whether they voted for Jack Kennedy in 1960, or for Richard Nixon ... Those bastards are scarred forever, and I'm not. At least not for that. Hell, it was an honor to be able to vote against Richard Nixon - and it will be an honor on November 3 [1992] to vote against George Bush and everything he stands for. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon as a 12-year-old was given a portrait of Lincoln that he hung over his bed. Nixon also justified what would later be seen as abuses of power by comparing America in the Vietnam era to the country during the Civil War. ~ Richard Norton Smith
Richard Nixon quotes by Richard Norton Smith
I would have to say that Richard Nixon is probably the most gifted and skilled political practitioner, in his pre-presidential years, of all of the American presidents in the 20th century. ~ Roger Morris
Richard Nixon quotes by Roger Morris
Chief Justice Warren Burger, a conservative appointed by Richard Nixon, described the new interpretation of the Second Amendment in an interview after his tenure as 'one of the greatest pieces of fraud-I repeat the word FRAUD-on the American public by special-interest groups that I have ever seen in my lifetime. ~ Fareed Zakaria
Richard Nixon quotes by Fareed Zakaria
We're wild horses. We're going to eat your food, knock down your tent and poop on your shoes. We're protected by federal law, just like Richard Nixon. ~ Dave Barry
Richard Nixon quotes by Dave Barry
I cast my first vote on my father's lap in 1960, for Richard Nixon, in the voting booth. I was 8. ~ Christopher Buckley
Richard Nixon quotes by Christopher Buckley
Here's a guy [Richard Nixon] who had no gift for small talk, never liked to be around strangers, was physically awkward, and he goes into the one business that calls for ease with strangers and a gift for small talk. ~ Harry Shearer
Richard Nixon quotes by Harry Shearer
I think Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that Richard Nixon did not and in a way that Bill Clinton did not. He put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it. ~ Barack Obama
Richard Nixon quotes by Barack Obama
Things have gotten so bad in this country, you look back at Richard Nixon with nostalgia. ~ Ralph Nader
Richard Nixon quotes by Ralph Nader
John Kennedy won the first televised presidential debate among those watching it, while Richard Nixon won among those listening on the radio. ~ Susan Estrich
Richard Nixon quotes by Susan Estrich
I contend that, in spite of all that might be said about Watergate, Richard Nixon was good for the poor people of America. ~ Tony Campolo
Richard Nixon quotes by Tony Campolo
Do you realize the responsibility I carry? I'm the only person standing between Richard Nixon and the White House. ~ John F. Kennedy
Richard Nixon quotes by John F. Kennedy
Now, therefore, I, Gerald R. Ford, President of the United States, pursuant to the pardon power conferred upon me by Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution, have granted and by these presents do grant a full, free, and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974. ~ Gerald R. Ford
Richard Nixon quotes by Gerald R. Ford
Mr. President, I love you, but you're wrong. (To Richard Nixon, on the Vietnam War) ~ Paul Harvey
Richard Nixon quotes by Paul Harvey
Every time I think of Tim Leary I get angry. He was a liar and a quack and a worse human being than Richard Nixon. For the last twenty-six years of his life he worked as an informant for the FBI and turned his friends into the police and betrayed the peace symbol he hid behind. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon was a criminally insane Monster - Bill Clinton is a black-hearted Swine of a friend. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
Though it was never a goal in life, it has occurred to me that I've met six presidents of the United States. OK, I met four of them before they became president, including Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, No. 43. ~ Dan Jenkins
Richard Nixon quotes by Dan Jenkins
If Richard Nixon was second-rate, what in the world is third-rate? ~ Joseph Heller
Richard Nixon quotes by Joseph Heller
Richard Nixon is a no good, lying bastard. He can lie out of both sides of his mouth at the same time, and if he ever caught himself telling the truth, he'd lie just to keep his hand in. ~ Harry Truman
Richard Nixon quotes by Harry Truman
ON AUGUST 15, 1971, United States President Richard Nixon announced that foreign-held U.S. dollars would no longer be convertible into gold - thus stripping away the last vestige of the international gold standard.1 This was the end of a policy that had been effective since 1931, and confirmed by the Bretton Woods accords at the end of World War II: that while United States citizens might no longer be allowed to cash in their dollars for gold, all U.S. currency held outside the country was to be redeemable at the rate of $35 an ounce. By doing so, Nixon initiated the regime of free-floating currencies that continues to this day. ~ David Graeber
Richard Nixon quotes by David Graeber
I grew up in the era when Dan Rather hated Richard Nixon. He was a newsman, but you knew what his opinion was. ~ Roger Ailes
Richard Nixon quotes by Roger Ailes
He was arguably the best-qualified FBI director since J. Edgar Hoover; he thought Clinton was the most talented politician since Richard Nixon. That made their mutual contempt all the more tragic. It undermined the FBI and ultimately damaged the United States. ~ Tim Weiner
Richard Nixon quotes by Tim Weiner
During our visits, he consumed an embarrassingly varied assortment of cheap beer and wine, vacillating between fury and melancholy as one might imagine Richard Nixon to be doing not far away. Sometimes he choked on his emotions so badly I feared I would have to perform the Heimlich maneuver on him. ~ Viet Thanh Nguyen
Richard Nixon quotes by Viet Thanh Nguyen
Think of Richard Nixon or Jimmy Carter or Billy Graham, or even Albert Einstein, and what will come to your mind is an image, a picture of face, (in Einstein's case, a photograph of a face). Of words, nothing will come to mind. This is the difference between thinking in a word-centered culture and thinking in an image-centered culture. ~ Neil Postman
Richard Nixon quotes by Neil Postman
It is my personal plan to assassinate by pistol either Richard Nixon or George Wallace. ~ Arthur Bremer
Richard Nixon quotes by Arthur Bremer
On the morning of Thanksgiving, I would wake up to the home smelling of all good things, wafting upstairs to my room. I would set the table with the fancy silverware and china and hope that my parents and grandmother wouldn't have the annual Thanksgiving fight about Richard Nixon. ~ Debi Mazar
Richard Nixon quotes by Debi Mazar
By disgracing and degrading the presidency of the United States, by fleeing the White House like a diseased cur, Richard Nixon broke the heart of the American Dream. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
I remember the day Richard Nixon won in 1968. That was a time that seemed certain to bring about long awaited seismic change in America. But events of tragic proportion took us on a turn. Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. were suddenly dead. ~ Richard Schiff
Richard Nixon quotes by Richard Schiff
Believe it or not, I supported Richard Nixon on the issue of presidential privilege. How could anyone conceive of being the president of the United States and think that every single thing that you say or do can become a part of the public record? It just seems so stupid to me. ~ Jack Nicholson
Richard Nixon quotes by Jack Nicholson
The Southern strategy of the Nixon administration is based upon the same principle as the Compromise of 1876: namely, that Northern Republicans and Southern conservatives share common interests and together can rule this nation. I do not think it is possible to condemn too harshly what the President has done in the South in order to form this alliance. Indeed, I can think of no recent President who has more blatantly sacrificed the ideals of equality and racial justice for his own political ends. Nor is Nixon simply riding the wave of reaction. He is encouraging that reaction, for he knows that he became President because of divisions in the society, and that it is in his interest that these divisions grow wider. ~ Bayard Rustin
Richard Nixon quotes by Bayard Rustin
JFK apparently felt genuine sympathy for his 1960 presidential opponent Richard Nixon. He felt that, with Nixon's frequent shifts in political philosophy and reinventions, he must have to decide which Nixon he will be at each stop. This, Kennedy reasoned, must be exhausting. ~ David Pietrusza
Richard Nixon quotes by David Pietrusza
Think about one of the most powerful influences on a young child's life - the absence of a father figure. Look back on recent presidents, and you'll find an absent, or weak, or failed father in the lives of Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. ~ Jeff Greenfield
Richard Nixon quotes by Jeff Greenfield
During the Cold War, America undertook serious military cuts only once: after the election of Richard Nixon, during the Vietnam War. The result: Vietnam fell to the Communists, the Russians moved into Afghanistan, and American influence around the globe waned dramatically. ~ Ben Shapiro
Richard Nixon quotes by Ben Shapiro
Try, if you will, to imagine Dwight Eisenhower or JFK or Lyndon Johnson or, for that matter, Ronald Reagan chin-wagging with Jack Paar or Johnny Carson. Richard Nixon did, famously, go on 'Laugh In' in 1968, but as a candidate; and to his credit, he rued the day and hated every second of it. ~ Christopher Buckley
Richard Nixon quotes by Christopher Buckley
Previous presidents, including great ones like Roosevelt, have used the IRS against their enemies. But I don't think Barack Obama ever wanted to be on the same page as Richard Nixon. ~ Joe Klein
Richard Nixon quotes by Joe Klein
As recently as the early 1970s, a Republican president - Richard Nixon - was willing to impose wage and price controls to rescue the U.S. economy from crisis, popularizing the notion that "We are all Keynesians now." But by the 1980s, the battle of ideas waged out of the same Washington think tanks that now deny climate change had successfully managed to equate the very idea of industrial planning with Stalin's five-year plans. Real capitalists don't plan, these ideological warriors insisted - they unleash the power of the profit motive and let the market, in its infinite wisdom, create the best possible society for all. ~ Naomi Klein
Richard Nixon quotes by Naomi Klein
John F. Kennedy, who seized the White House from Richard Nixon in a frenzied campaign that turned a whole generation of young Americans into political junkies, got shot in the head for his efforts, murdered in Dallas by some hapless geek named Oswald who worked for either Castro, the mob, Jimmy Hoffa, the CIA, his dominatrix landlady or the odious, degenerate FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover. The list is long and crazy - maybe Marilyn Monroe's first husband fired those shots from the grassy knoll. Who knows? ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
I've said it before: Barack Obama is really the president Richard Nixon always wanted to be. You know, he's been allowed to act unilaterally in a way that we've fought for decades. ~ Jonathan Turley
Richard Nixon quotes by Jonathan Turley
Public school was never in business to produce Thoreau. It is in business to produce a man like Richard Nixon and, even more, a population like the one which could elect him. ~ Jonathan Kozol
Richard Nixon quotes by Jonathan Kozol
Samuel Taylor Coleridge was right when he claimed, 'In politics, what begins in fear usually ends up in folly.' Political activists are more inclined, though, to heed an observation from Richard Nixon: 'People react to fear, not love. They don't teach that in Sunday school, but it's true.' That principle, which guided the late president's political strategy throughout his career, is the sine qua non of contemporary political campaigning. Marketers of products and services ranging from car alarms to TV news programs have taken it to heart as well.

The short answer to why Americans harbor so many misbegotten fears is that immense power and money await those who tap into our moral insecurities and supply us with symbolic substitutes. ~ Barry Glassner
Richard Nixon quotes by Barry Glassner
The fact of the Watergate cover-up is not nearly as interesting as the step into making the cover-up. And when you understand the step, you understand that Richard Nixon lied. That he was a criminal. ~ Bob Woodward
Richard Nixon quotes by Bob Woodward
My big subject as a historian is how Americans divide themselves. What are the divisions that structure our political lives. Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan were perfect foils for that story. ~ Rick Perlstein
Richard Nixon quotes by Rick Perlstein
I'm old enough to remember Richard Nixon. They called it the imperial presidency when he was refusing to spend money that Congress had appropriated. ~ Angus King
Richard Nixon quotes by Angus King
Ever since Richard Nixon walloped George McGovern in the presidential election of 1972, political pundits have treated as a truism the proposition that liberals are out of step with the rest of the nation, and therefore all but unelectable outside the precincts of the Northeast
give or take a college town here or a ski resort there. During the course of every presidential election for the past forty years now, Republicans have sought to wield the word liberal as if it were a six-gauge shotgun. ~ Eric Alterman
Richard Nixon quotes by Eric Alterman
Congress right now is dismantling legislation instituted by Richard Nixon - really the last liberal president of the U.S., literally, and that shows you what's been going on. They're dismantling the limited measures of the Nixon administration to try to do something about what is a growing, emerging catastrophe. And this is connected with a huge propaganda system, proudly and openly declared by the business world, to try to convince people that climate change is just a liberal hoax. "Why pay attention to these scientists?" And we're really regressing back to the medieval period. It's not a joke. ~ Noam Chomsky
Richard Nixon quotes by Noam Chomsky
McGovern made some stupid mistakes, but in context they seem almost frivolous compared to the things Richard Nixon does every day of his life, on purpose, as a matter of policy and a perfect expression of everything he stands for.
Jesus! Where will it end? How low do you have to stoop in this country to be President? ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
Ronald Reagan wasn't in the establishment of the Republican Party either, nor was Richard Nixon. ~ Karl Rove
Richard Nixon quotes by Karl Rove
Manson's the man who's responsible for "killing the Sixties." He really knew how to play up the whole "most dangerous man alive" thing when at the time, the most dangerous man alive was Richard Nixon. ~ John Roecker
Richard Nixon quotes by John Roecker
I think that Richard Nixon will go down in history as a true folk hero, who struck a vital blow to the whole diseased concept of the revered image and gave the American virtue of irreverence and skepticism back to the people. ~ William S. Burroughs
Richard Nixon quotes by William S. Burroughs
I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around
the world, this administration has been the worst in history ...
The overt reversal of America's basic values as expressed by
previous administrations, including those of George H.W. Bush
and Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon and others, has been the
most disturbing to me. ~ Jimmy Carter
Richard Nixon quotes by Jimmy Carter
I was never for Richard Nixon until Watergate. ~ M. Stanton Evans
Richard Nixon quotes by M. Stanton Evans
Richard Nixon looks like a flaming liberal today, compared to a golem like George Bush. Indeed. Where is Richard Nixon now that we finally need him? ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
The essence of Richard Nixon is loneliness. ~ Henry A. Kissinger
Richard Nixon quotes by Henry A. Kissinger
I think we're at risk with our democracy. I think we're dealing with the most closed, imperialistic, nastiest administration in living memory. They even put Richard Nixon to shame. ~ Wesley Clark
Richard Nixon quotes by Wesley Clark
My dad [Johnny Cash] went to the [Richard] Nixon White House and refused to sing "Welfare Cadillac" (instead performing the anti-war songs "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" and "Man in Black"). He protested the Vietnam War, but he went to perform for the troops with bombs dropping all around him. He had that kind of genius: a true artist's capacity for holding two opposing thoughts at once while being large enough to encompass all realities. ~ Rosanne Cash
Richard Nixon quotes by Rosanne Cash
the rate of increase of inflation is decreasing ~ Richard Nixon
Richard Nixon quotes by Richard Nixon
Richard Nixon had made a fatal error in ignoring the politico-meteorological dimension when he announced the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia on April 30, 1970. The invasion of Laos, on the other hand, happened in February 1971, and the campuses were quiet. Who wants to stage a walkout in February? ~ Rebecca Goldstein
Richard Nixon quotes by Rebecca Goldstein
Richard Nixon was a serial collector of resentments. ~ Rick Perlstein
Richard Nixon quotes by Rick Perlstein
Only a cheap politician, greedy for political gain, would try to single out one individual for blame. The fault lies not with the individual but with the system, and that system is Richard Nixon. ~ Pat Paulsen
Richard Nixon quotes by Pat Paulsen
It's fairly obvious, since Richard Nixon, that there is no such thing as a fair deal for any voter in the United States
You're just not gonna get it. It's a joke
the people that you vote for, they're the next best thing to criminals. But of course they have money for advertising campaigns that make them look a little bit better than they actually are. ~ Frank Zappa
Richard Nixon quotes by Frank Zappa
If Obama's vision of the public sector is socialism, then so too were the visions of Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon. ~ Jeff Greenfield
Richard Nixon quotes by Jeff Greenfield
Some years back Richard Nixon warned the American people
that Russia was bad because she had not kept any treaty or
agreement signed with her. You can trust the Communists, the
saying went, to be Communists.
Indian people laugh themselves sick when they hear these
statements. America has yet to keep one Indian treaty or agreement
despite the fact that the United States government signed
over four hundred such treaties and agreements with Indian
tribes. It would take Russia another century to make and break
as many treaties as the United States has already violated. ~ Vine Deloria Jr.
Richard Nixon quotes by Vine Deloria Jr.
It is a fitting irony that under Richard Nixon, "launder" became a dirty word. ~ William Zinsser
Richard Nixon quotes by William Zinsser
The nomination of Richard Nixon cemented the ascendance of a conservative over a moderate ideology within the Republican Party, a dominance that has only grown more pronounced over the years as the party has continued its move to the right and moderates have dwindled in numbers and influence. I sometimes think that I didn't leave the Republican Party as much as it left me. I ~ Hillary Rodham Clinton
Richard Nixon quotes by Hillary Rodham Clinton
Young George spent more money on one day of his Inauguration Ceremonies than Richard Nixon did on his whole Campaign in 1972 - and Nixon was crucified as a Criminal Spendthrift with the ethics of a snake. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
ROSS PEROT was the best thing that happened in American politics since Richard Nixon acquired a taste for gin. In both cases, the political dialogue of the day was enriched by spontaneous gibberish that entertained the wrong people and made the right ones question their faith. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
Experience helped Richard Nixon, but it didn't save him, and it certainly wasn't a blanket endorsement. He blundered terribly in dealing with Vietnam. ~ Robert Dallek
Richard Nixon quotes by Robert Dallek
Watergate showed more strengths in our system than weaknesses ... The whole country did take part in quite a genuine sense in passing judgment on Richard Nixon. ~ Archibald Cox
Richard Nixon quotes by Archibald Cox
George McGovern, for all his mistakes ... understands what a fantastic monument to all the best instincts of the human race this country might have been, if we could have kept it out of the hands of greedy little hustlers like Richard Nixon, ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
I'd walk over my own grandmother to re-elect Richard Nixon. ~ Charles Colson
Richard Nixon quotes by Charles Colson
A little later, the Apollo mission was consummated and there were Americans on the moon. I remember distinctly looking up from the quad on what was quite a moon-flooded night, and thinking about it. They made it! The Stars and Stripes are finally flown on another orb! Also, English becomes the first and only language spoken on a neighboring rock! Who could forbear to cheer? Still, the experience was poisoned for me by having to watch Richard Nixon smirking as he babbled to the lunar-nauts by some closed-circuit link. Was even the silvery orb to be tainted by the base, earthbound reality of imperialism? ~ Christopher Hitchens
Richard Nixon quotes by Christopher Hitchens
Ivan couldn't think of a religion that was any damn good at making utter truthtellers out of its practitioners. Maybe the Quakers were truly plainspoken at one time, but even they managed to squeeze out a Richard Nixon after a few hundred years of suppressing their human propinquity for untruth. ~ Orson Scott Card
Richard Nixon quotes by Orson Scott Card
If George W. Bush is given a second term, and retains a Republican Congress and a compliant federal judiciary, he and his allies are likely to embark on a campaign of political retribution the likes of which we haven't seen since Richard Nixon. ~ Paul Begala
Richard Nixon quotes by Paul Begala
I am a writer, a professional journalist with serious credentials in Crime, Craziness, and Politics. I have mingled with dangerous criminals and attended many trials ... from Hell's Angels, Black Panthers and Chicano street fighters to Roxanne Pulitzer and even Richard Nixon, back in the good old days before he was run out of the White House for fraud, perjury, graft, and criminal negligence. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Richard Nixon quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower created the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, an achievement that much of the Republican Party has been trying to undo over the past several decades. Richard Nixon signed into law four landmark federal bills: the Clean Air Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Environmental Pesticide Control Act, and the Endangered Species Act. He established the Environmental Protection Agency, and made many strong environmental appointments in his administration. As we saw in Section 2.2, it was when the Reagan administration came to power in 1980 that environmental concern began to become a partisan issue. ~ Dale Jamieson
Richard Nixon quotes by Dale Jamieson
My mother said she had me late in life because of Richard Nixon. ~ L. Joseph Shosty
Richard Nixon quotes by L. Joseph Shosty
In the words of then - vice president Richard Nixon, the increasing crime rate "can be traced directly to the spread of the corrosive doctrine that every citizen possesses an inherent right to decide for himself which laws to obey and when to disobey them."37 ~ Michelle Alexander
Richard Nixon quotes by Michelle Alexander
Richard Nixon coveted, to the point of obsession, a controversy-free, stage-managed coronation. ~ David Pietrusza
Richard Nixon quotes by David Pietrusza
Richard Nixon was the best thing that ever happened to journalism. I mean this guy was wonderful. Just when you thought he could get no worse, he got worse. ~ P. J. O'Rourke
Richard Nixon quotes by P. J. O'Rourke
US journalists, for years overwhelmingly enamored of Barack Obama, were now commonly speaking of him in these terms: as some sort of grave menace to press freedoms, the most repressive leader in this regard since Richard Nixon. That was quite a remarkable turn for a politician who was ushered into power vowing the most transparent administration in US history. ~ Glenn Greenwald
Richard Nixon quotes by Glenn Greenwald
What makes me laugh? Richard Nixon always made me laugh. ~ Bruce Vilanch
Richard Nixon quotes by Bruce Vilanch
Why does The Smartest Woman in the World [Hillary Clinton], who could carve her own career, who was on the Watergate committee - and got thrown off of it, by the way, for wanting to deny Richard Nixon his constitutional rights. How does a woman who has become a fixture in northeastern liberal politics find herself in the backwoods of Arkansas? ~ Rush Limbaugh
Richard Nixon quotes by Rush Limbaugh
When President Ford pardoned Richard Nixon for Watergate, he actually pardoned Alexander Haig for the JFK assassination. ~ Tegan Mathis
Richard Nixon quotes by Tegan Mathis
Well, let me make something perfectly clear (as Richard Nixon says on those old news clips about the Watergate scandal, right before he's about to fill the room with fog)I am not immortal. I've spent more than ten hours in the psych ward with Sarah Byrnes
really and truly the toughest person in our solar system
and I'll tell you what, if life can shoot Sarah Byrnes ot of the sky, it can nail me blindfolded. ~ Chris Crutcher
Richard Nixon quotes by Chris Crutcher
Almost nothing can be gained from pinball. The only payoff is a numerical substitution for pride. The loses, however, are considerable. You could probably erect bronze statues of every American president (assuming you are willing to include Richard Nixon) with the coins you will lose, while your lost time is irreplaceable.

When you are standing before the machine engaged in your solitary act of consumption, another guy is plowing through Proust, while still another guy is doing some heavy petting with his girlfriend while watching "True Grit" at the local drive-in. They're the ones who may wind up becoming groundbreaking novelists or happily married men.

No, pinball leads nowhere. The only result is a glowing replay light. Replay, replay, replay - it makes you think the whole aim of the game is to achieve a form of eternity.

We know very little of eternity, although we can infer its existence.

The goal of pinball is self-transformation, not self-expression. It involves not the expansion of the ego but its diminution. Not analysis but all-embracing acceptance.

If it's self-expression, ego expansion or analysis you're after, the tilt light will exact its unsparing revenge.

Have a nice game! ~ Haruki Murakami
Richard Nixon quotes by Haruki Murakami
You roll back the stones, and you find slithering things. That is the world of Richard Nixon. ~ John Kenneth Galbraith
Richard Nixon quotes by John Kenneth Galbraith
When all is said and done, Donald Trump will make History completely forget about Richard Nixon. ~ Ed Krassenstein
Richard Nixon quotes by Ed Krassenstein
[democrats] hated Richard Nixon, and no wonder. It was Nixon who sent Alger Hiss to jail, and Nixon who waged the Vietnam War after the Democrats gave up, ~ David Frum
Richard Nixon quotes by David Frum
K [Kissinger] called from New York all disturbed because he felt someone had been getting to the P [President] on Vietnam ... Henry's concerned that the P's looking for a way to bug out and he thinks that would be a disaster now. ~ Bob Woodward
Richard Nixon quotes by Bob Woodward
We all have a stake in the truth. Society functions based on an assumption that people will abide by their word - that truth prevails over mendacity. For the most part, it does. If it didn't, relationships would have a short shelf life, commerce would cease, and trust between parents and children would be destroyed. All of us depend on honesty, because when truth is lacking we suffer, and society suffers. When Adolf Hitler lied to Neville Chamberlain, there was not peace in our time, and over fifty million people paid the price with their lives. When Richard Nixon lied to the nation, it destroyed the respect many had for the office of the president. When Enron executives lied to their employees, thousands of lives were ruined overnight. We count on our government and commercial institutions to be honest and truthful. We need and expect our friends and family to be truthful. Truth is essential for all relations be they personal, professional, or civic. ~ Joe Navarro
Richard Nixon quotes by Joe Navarro
I see a direct line between Kennedy and Richard Nixon and the opening to China and the detente with the Soviet Union. ~ Robert Dallek
Richard Nixon quotes by Robert Dallek
Holy Mary, mother of God," my mother said. "You were being chased by Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, and a rabbit. ~ Janet Evanovich
Richard Nixon quotes by Janet Evanovich
Edward Heath and Richard Nixon took personal awkwardness with each other to new and excruciating levels. ~ David Cameron
Richard Nixon quotes by David Cameron
You gotta remember the smartest thing the Congress did was to limit the voters in this country. Out of 3 1/2 to 4 million people, 200,000 voted. And that was true for a helluva long time, and the republic would have never survived if all the dummies had voted along with the intelligent people. ~ Richard Nixon
Richard Nixon quotes by Richard Nixon
