I have five flashlights and each performs its own trick. I have a raincoat with zippers and net material so I never get too hot in a downpour. I have a shelf crammed with books and a shortwave that speaks Arabic, Japanese, Dutch and Russian. They have mud huts with maybe a few chairs and faded pages of old magazines fastened to the wall. I ride my twenty-one speed Peace Corps-issue bike to Ferke not to save a dollar on transport but for the luxury of exercise. They ride in from their settlements on cranky old mopeds or bikes with a single cog because it's the only option. And they give me charity. I just stare at it - near tears. To refuse their offer would be pure insult. So I do the rounds again shaking hands with all the men in boubous saying over and over "An y che " Thank you. ~ Sarah Erdman
Fretwork Wall quotes by Sarah Erdman
To get our economy back on track and keep it functioning properly without the problems of our financial institutions, we need reasonable regulations that will protect Main Street while at the same time allow Wall Street to do what it does best - make money for American investors. ~ Marsha Blackburn
Fretwork Wall quotes by Marsha Blackburn
I asked a nurse for dental floss and was told that I am not allowed dental floss. Apparently dental floss can be used for several functions besides the maintenance of healthy gums. These apparently include self-harm. When instructed that I was not permitted dental floss because of "risks it raises associated with suicide" I envisioned a noose made entirely of floss. Realizing such a noose would require a dramatic amount of floss to effectively uphold any human person, I brought it to the attention of a nurse.

"I don't believe that even the most practiced engineers could fashion any functioning noose out of a single container of floss," I say.

"People use it to cut themselves," she explained.

"Oh," I replied.

I had just about come to terms with the no-floss rule until the hospital, in a flagrant display of disrespect for its patients, chose to serve us corn on the cob for lunch.

"Are you aware that we are not allowed dental floss?" I yelled at the nurse bringing me the corn. I then threw the corn violently from my plate into the nearest wall. ~ Emily R. Austin
Fretwork Wall quotes by Emily R. Austin
I'm trapped behind a wall of fear and fear itself. ~ Gabriella Jording
Fretwork Wall quotes by Gabriella Jording
Of what use are words of wisdom to the man who is unwise?
Of what use is a lamp to a man who is blind?
Hear the essence of thousands of sacred books: to help others is virtue: to hurt others is sin.
A man rises or goes down by his own actions: like the builder of a wall, or the digger of a well.
The narrow-minded man thinks and says: 'This man is one of us; this one is not, he is a stranger. To the man of noble soul the whole of mankind is but one family.

- quoted in the introduction, ascribed to the Hitopadesa ~ Juan Mascaro
Fretwork Wall quotes by Juan Mascaro
PAINT THE WALLS OF your mind With many beautiful pictures. ~ William Lyon Phelps
Fretwork Wall quotes by William Lyon Phelps
Not well-built walls, but brave citizens are the bulwark of the city. ~ Alcaeus
Fretwork Wall quotes by Alcaeus
Men can sense when a wall is coming down, and they can't help the fact that they have to be there to watch it fall, or better yet, help push it over.

It has been argued that the fall of the Berlin Wall had nothing whatsoever to do with the collapse of communism: it was just a weekend project that got out of control - thousands of German guys satisfying their undeniable urge to fix things up. ~ Stuart McLean
Fretwork Wall quotes by Stuart McLean
On Wall Street, fraudulent schemes tend to thrive during economic booms, and to blow up when times turn tough. ~ James Surowiecki
Fretwork Wall quotes by James Surowiecki
There is no difficulty that enough love will not conquer: no disease that love will not heal: no door that enough love will not open ... It makes no difference how deep set the trouble: how hopeless the outlook: how muddled the tangle: how great the mistake. A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all. If only you could love enough you would be the happiest and most powerful being in the world ... ~ Emmet Fox

I don't approve of what Wall Street and the wealthy have done to this country, but they are the very ones buying my paintings. ~ Scott Kahn
Fretwork Wall quotes by Scott Kahn
It doesn't matter if you and everyone else in the room are thinking it. You don't say the words. Words are weapons. They blast big bloody holes in the world. And words are bricks. Say something out loud and it starts turning solid. Say it loud enough and it becomes a wall you can't get through. ~ Richard Kadrey
Fretwork Wall quotes by Richard Kadrey
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow. Awareness of others is a healthy antidote to this self-focus. ~ Kevin Malarkey
Fretwork Wall quotes by Kevin Malarkey
Andrea, in less than twelve hours, Atlanta will be full of demons. They will kill, feed, and release more demons. What emergency is more important than this one?
She hesitated. "I'm not supposed to disclose this. There's a man. His name is Roland ... "
I almost punched the wall. "What is he doing that's so damn crucial? What, is he building another tower? It will fall like all his other ones. Or did his eye finally grow back and he decided to have a battle to celebrate? ~ Ilona Andrews
Fretwork Wall quotes by Ilona Andrews
Which Wall Street big shots Eisman had insulted was a matter of which Wall Street big shots' presence Eisman was allowed into. ~ Michael Lewis
Fretwork Wall quotes by Michael Lewis
If mere scandal could have destroyed the big Wall Street investment banks, they would have vanished long ago. This woman wasn't saying that Wall Street bankers were corrupt. She was saying that they were stupid. ~ Michael Lewis
Fretwork Wall quotes by Michael Lewis
The next thing Juliana knew, he had her braced against the back wall of the shower, one hand under her bottom, the other tangled in the back of her wet hair, holding her in place as he took her mouth with what seemed to be an urgent, desperate craving, and claimed her body in the same way. His c#ck found her soft notch, his first thick thrust so hard and deep it shoved the air up out of her lungs, her thoughts fracturing beneath the violent surge of sensation. ~ Rhyannon Byrd
Fretwork Wall quotes by Rhyannon Byrd
My gaze flew to him once more, noting the cigarette he set down even as he exhaled a long plume of white."Why are you lying there smoking while I'm chained to a wall?"I demanded. The look he gave me was a mixture of relief and cynicism."Since it seems you don't remember anything about the past two days, let me assure you,luv-I earned that smoke. ~ Jeaniene Frost
Fretwork Wall quotes by Jeaniene Frost
If it was an emotion, it was a totally emotionless one. It was hatred, implacable hatred. It was cold, not like ice is cold, but like a wall is cold. It was impersonal, not like a randomly flung fist in a crowd is impersonal, but like a computer-issued parking summons is impersonal. And it was deadly, again, not like a bullet or a knife is deadly, but like a brick wall across an expressway is deadly. ~ Douglas Adams
Fretwork Wall quotes by Douglas Adams
When you're sending emails, you live and die by your subject line. Making it personal or funny can increase your open rate 10 times or more. At the very least, try to pitch some value rather than pointless bragging. 'Work Faster!' is better than 'Version 10.4 now available!' ~ John Wall
Fretwork Wall quotes by John Wall
Wealth from trade was the mainspring of Western material advance; the visible agents of change were great guns. These came of age in Europe in the 15th century. On land their potency in reducing castle walls favoured central over local power, since in general only monarchs could afford siege-trains; so nation-states were consolidated and extended into great territorial empires. At sea, guns transformed sailing ships into mobile castles virtually impregnable to opponents who lacked equally powerful ordnance. With the ocean-going gunned warship, western Europe began to extend around the globe. ~ Peter Padfield
Fretwork Wall quotes by Peter Padfield
Home is any four walls that enclose the right person. ~ Helen Rowland
Fretwork Wall quotes by Helen Rowland
In my Paris apartment, when a neighbor drives nails into the wall at an undue hour, I "naturalize" the noise by imagining that I am in my house in Dijon, where I have a garden. And finding everything I hear quite natural, I say to myself: "That's my woodpecker at work in the acacia tree." This is my method for obtaining calm when things disturb me. ~ Gaston Bachelard
Fretwork Wall quotes by Gaston Bachelard
Cartwright grooved the chisel's tooth into the base of the skull, where the spine would fuse, and lifted the hammer. The chisel jumped in his hand and half the skull turned to silt. It cascaded down the rock wall with the faintest sigh. The {nine-fingered} boy let out a string of oaths so profane, so unparalleled, that surely they'd been inspired by a hell so near.

Cartwright was glad to have a hammer in hand. ~ Matthew Neill Null
Fretwork Wall quotes by Matthew Neill Null
Notionally a left-wing movement, the Anti-Germans were born after the collapse of the Berlin wall. While most Germans rejoiced at the end of the Cold War, the Anti-Germans feared that a united Germany might lead to a fourth Reich - and a return of anti-Semitism. ~ Luke Harding
Fretwork Wall quotes by Luke Harding
Yet we can be sure that whatever fictions exist in Wall Street bookkeeping, the earth is a faithful scribe, a faultless calculator, a superb bookkeeper; we will be held responsible for every bit of our economic folly. ~ Thomas Berry
Fretwork Wall quotes by Thomas Berry
Stories of Fantasy are nothing more than the retelling of our own triumphs and sad, sad tragedies ... Tod Langley
I have that painted on my office wall and love to stare at it. ~ Tod Langley
Fretwork Wall quotes by Tod Langley
Mr. Rohan," she said awkwardly, "I wish I could be a proper hostess and show you to the parlor and offer refreshments. But I don't have refreshments. I really don't even have a parlor. Please excuse me for sounding rude, but this isn't a good time to call - "
"I can help you." He leaned a shoulder against the wall, smiling. "I'm good with my hands. ~ Lisa Kleypas
Fretwork Wall quotes by Lisa Kleypas
All alone, or in two's,
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall.
Some hand in hand
And some gathered together in bands.
The bleeding hearts and artists
Make their stand.
And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy
Banging your heart against some mad bugger's wall. ~ Roger Waters
Fretwork Wall quotes by Roger Waters
He hurried back. Walls seemed to shift and advance. Right here, it must be. Wasn't this passage too short? No, it wasn't a wall that blocked his way, only fog. The fog retreated before him - then at once yielded up a wall. Staggering crimson letters caught in the web of graffiti spelled KILLER. ~ Ramsey Campbell
Fretwork Wall quotes by Ramsey Campbell
I like when I have to act and direct; then, when you have to dub, you're by yourself in front of the wall, and I'm always scared that you're not good like when you are in real when you act. ~ Monica Bellucci
Fretwork Wall quotes by Monica Bellucci
The only thing I collect is art. I collect it because I like looking at it. A lot of it is really personal stuff that my friends have made, paintings that my husband's mother made, and things that I bought. I buy abstract art on eBay, and I buy some outsider art on eBay, or what is called folk art, I buy a lot of. I have a lot of professional art work as well as more stuff my friends' kids make. To have a wall of art to look at, I feel really surrounded by love, because so much of the work is related to my friendships. ~ Kathleen Hanna
Fretwork Wall quotes by Kathleen Hanna
At one point, she'd wanted to hurl the whole breakfast at the wall. And then she'd remember why it was that men had temper tantrums and women didn't: cleanup. ~ Kristin Hannah
Fretwork Wall quotes by Kristin Hannah
In a nutshell, we are shocked by cybercrime, but also expect to be shocked by it because we expect it to be there, but - confusingly - we appear to be shocked if we are not shocked (if we don't find it)! ~ David S. Wall
Fretwork Wall quotes by David S. Wall
The fact that he chose the images for the wall, and that he liked to look at them did not really imply that he thought the person in the photographs was himself. And, in fact, I think we as people make a kind of mistake in believing this to be true in general about photographs of ourselves. Is that really you in the photograph? Or is it someone you have a connection with? Someone you once knew, but who now is foreign to you? A person whose concerns you share in part - but who is lost and gone away? ~ Jesse Ball
Fretwork Wall quotes by Jesse Ball
It's one of the magical things about life, that when you hit a wall, you step back genuinely and humbly ... and the answers suddenly flow like a babbling brook. ~ Gregor Collins
Fretwork Wall quotes by Gregor Collins
Perhaps I won't tire of her," Gray protested, just to be contrary. Because, apparently, that was how brothers behaved.
"Perhaps a dolphin will fly out of your arse. And here's an argument even you can't refuse. Grayson Shipping doesn't need a reputation for delivering damaged goods. You want me to hand George Waltham an impregnated governess?"
"I wouldn't get her with child. Give me that much credit, at least."
"I give you credit for nothing. Let's try this one last time, shall we? You made me this ship's captain. If I'm the captain, what I say goes. And I say you don't touch her. If you can't abide by my orders, take command of the ship yourself and let me go home."
"Go home and do what? Squander your fortune and talent on dirt farming?"
"Go home and take care of my own family. Go home and do what I damn well please, for once."
Cursing, Gray leaned against the wall. He knew Joss would make good on that threat, too. It hadn't been easy, coaxing his brother out of mourning. Gray had resorted to outright bullying just to convince him to take command of the Aphrodite, threatening to cut off his income unless he reported to London as agreed. But he needed Joss, if this shipping concern was to stay afloat. He'd worked too hard, sacrificed too much to see it fail.
And if Joss didn't become a willing partner, it all would have been in vain.
"Stay away from the girl, Gray."
Gray sighed. "We're on the same ship. I can't help but be near her ~ Tessa Dare
Fretwork Wall quotes by Tessa Dare
The Balrog reached the bridge. Gandalf stood in the middle of the span, leaning on the staff in his left hand, but in his other hand Glamdring gleamed, cold and white. His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings. It raised the whip, and the thongs whined and cracked. Fire came from its nostrils. But Gandalf stood firm.

'You cannot pass,' he said. The orcs stood still, and a dead silence fell. 'I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass.'

The Balrog made no answer. The fire in it seemed to die, but the darkness grew. It stepped forward slowly onto the bridge, and suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall; but still Gandalf could be seen, glimmering in the gloom; he seemed small, and altogether alone: grey and bent, like a wizened tree before the onset of a storm.

From out of the shadow a red sword leaped flaming.

Glamdring glittered white in answer.

There was a ringing clash and a stab of white fire. The Balrog fell back and its sword flew up in molten fragments. The wizard swayed on the bridge, stepped back a pace, and then again stood still.

'You cannot pass!' he said.

With a bound the Balrog leaped full upon the bridge. Its whip whirled and hissed.

'He cannot stand alo ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Fretwork Wall quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
It is bad to be poor. I shall go to the wall for bread and meat, if I neglect my business this year as well as last. ~ Abraham Lincoln
Fretwork Wall quotes by Abraham Lincoln
I realise the power of art that does not hang on the walls of galleries. ~ Marina Abramovic
Fretwork Wall quotes by Marina Abramovic
The city is loveliest when the sweet death racket begins. Her own life lived in defiance of nature, her electricity, her frigidaires, her soundproof walls, the glint of lacquered nails, the plumes that wave across the corrugated sky. Here in the coffin depths grow the everlasting flowers sent by telegraph. ~ Henry Miller
Fretwork Wall quotes by Henry Miller
In school, I learned about artists and how they were free to express themselves. I was allergic to conformity, and the lifestyle attracted me. I wanted to express myself in a way that slammed people up against the wall. ~ Grace Slick
Fretwork Wall quotes by Grace Slick
Shall I show you the door ... or would you rather go out through the wall? - Maris ~ Sherrilyn Kenyon
Fretwork Wall quotes by Sherrilyn Kenyon
His hair was mussed, and his teeth were very white in his swarthy, dust-streaked face. With his autocratic facade stripped away, and his eyes sparkling with enjoyment, his grin was so unexpectedly engaging that Lillian experienced a curious melting sensation inside. Hanging over him, she felt her own lips curving in a reluctant smile. A loose lock of her hair dangled free of its tether, sliding silkily over his jaw.
"What's a trebuchet?" she asked.
"A catapult. I have a friend who has a keen interest in medieval weaponry. He…" Westcliff hesitated, a new tension seeming to spread through his taut body as he lay beneath her. "He recently built a trebuchet using an ancient design…and enlisted me to help fire it…"
Lillian was entertained by the idea that the normally reserved Westcliff was capable of such boyish antics. Realizing that she was straddling him, she colored and began to wriggle off him. "Your aim was off?" she asked, striving to sound casual.
"The owner of the stone wall we demolished seemed to think so." The earl caught his breath sharply as her body slid away from his, and remained sitting on the ground even after she had gotten to her feet. ~ Lisa Kleypas
Fretwork Wall quotes by Lisa Kleypas
At that moment I had no mind to change, or not change, or throw against the nearest wall. ~ James Patterson
Fretwork Wall quotes by James Patterson
When the artist leaves a painting on a wall with the full confidence that the mastery of his skill, soul and vision will draw others into its vortex long after he is gone, he is using the grip of seduction. When the musician's performance, the manipulation of her instrument and the command of her talents are so raw and uninhibited that onlookers feel connected to the cosmos, bridged by the pure genius they are now experiencing, she is using the mystery of seduction. The unexplainable feeling fans get when the athlete ceases to be an athlete and rises to the level of the untouchable magician that can make anything happen, is nothing less than the power of seduction at work. The immense value of seduction is its ability to skillfully allure others into one's world . . . . ~ Curtis Tyrone Jones
Fretwork Wall quotes by Curtis Tyrone Jones
It's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back. ~ Jason Robert Brown
Fretwork Wall quotes by Jason Robert Brown
Find the toughest guy in the room. Embrace him like a brother. And then slam his head against the wall. ~ Al Capone
