Because often what keeps you from creative living is your self-absorption (your self-doubt, your self-disgust, your self-judgment, your crushing sense of self-protection). ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Self Absorption quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
She kept her looks very well and continued, in a rather severe way, to pay attention to her dress. There were moments now when her laugh sounded a little hollow and brittle, the laughter of nerves not of mirth or good spirits. Occasionally in a conversation she seemed to lose track and fall into a self-absorption, to start up overwhelmed by embarrassment and unspoken remorse ... She was pushing thirty-five. But she could still be good company. ~ Robert Penn Warren
Self Absorption quotes by Robert Penn Warren
While it lasts, the religion of worshiping oneself is the best. ~ C.S. Lewis
Self Absorption quotes by C.S. Lewis
It is easy to slip into self-absorption, and it is equally fatal. When one becomes absorbed in himself, in his health, in his personal problems, or in the small details of daily living, he is, at the same time losing interest in other people; worse, he is losing his ties to life. From that it is an easy step to losing interest in the world and in life itself. That is the beginning of death. ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
Self Absorption quotes by Eleanor Roosevelt
Ethan looked at her with loathing. She was no longer the listless creature who had lived at his side in a state of sullen self-absorption, but a mysterious alien presence, an evil energy secreted from the long years of silent brooding. ~ Edith Wharton
Self Absorption quotes by Edith Wharton
Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, which is most greatly experienced in the heart of those willing to surrender all self-sufficiency: self-promotion, self-reliance, self-protection, and self-absorption: it is a gift given. ~ Robin M. Bertram
Self Absorption quotes by Robin M. Bertram
It's like that, isn't it? Just as Raymond Chandler says, 'The first kiss is dynamite, the second is routine and then you take her clothes off,' It had been like that for Alan in his previous affairs, even the extended one he had had with Sybil while Naomi was pregnant. Sure, Alan went on enjoying sex with Sybil, but at a fundamental level his lust for her had died the very first time he felt the shock of her pubic bone against his, and knew that they were now truly welded into one another. Alan was a one-thrust man. Not that he'd ever been exactly promiscuous. Perhaps it would have been better for all concerned if he had been. Rather, his sentiment self-absorption had managed to gild each of these terminal thrusts with enough self-regarding burnish for him to sustain the 'relationships' that legitimised them for months; and in at least two instances, for years. ~ Will Self
Self Absorption quotes by Will Self
It is the definition of an egoist that whatever occupies his attention is, for that reason, important. ~ William Manchester
Self Absorption quotes by William Manchester
There was one of his lonelinesses coming, one of those times when he walked the streets or sat, aimless and depressed, biting a pencil at his desk. It was a self-absorption with no comfort, a demand for expression with no outlet, a sense of time rushing by, ceaselessly and wastefully - assuaged only by that conviction that there was nothing to waste, because all efforts and attainments were equally valueless. ~ F Scott Fitzgerald
Self Absorption quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
When we don't put the brakes on our self-absorption, we have nothing stopping us from total self-destruction. We become the fruits of our actions. ~ Zeena Schreck
Self Absorption quotes by Zeena Schreck
Leadership expert Michael Hyatt reflected on Karnazes's life and drew three conclusions about why we should embrace discomfort: 1. Comfort is overrated. It doesn't lead to happiness. It makes us lazy - and forgetful. It often leads to self-absorption, boredom, and discontent. 2. Discomfort can be a catalyst for growth. It makes us yearn for something more. It forces us to change, stretch, and adapt. 3. Discomfort is often a sign we're making progress. You've heard the expression, "no pain, no gain." It's true! When you push yourself to grow, you will experience discomfort.2 ~ Samuel Chand
Self Absorption quotes by Samuel Chand
If you are having a hard time sorting through your emotions, perhaps you are spending too much time thinking about yourself and not enough time thinking about… well, everyone else. ~ Richelle E. Goodrich
Self Absorption quotes by Richelle E. Goodrich
The shift from shame to guilt is crucial. Shame is a state of of self-absorption, while guilt is an emphatic, relational response, inspired by the hurt you have caused another. ~ Esther Perel
Self Absorption quotes by Esther Perel
Love created this world, & the lack of it can kill it. Selfishness, self-absorption , arrogance & indifference never built anything. ~ John Hope Bryant
Self Absorption quotes by John Hope Bryant
However tiresome to others, the most indefatigable orator is never tedious to himself. The sound of his own voice never loses its harmony to his own ear; and among the delusions, which self-love is ever assiduous in attempting to pass upon virtue, he fancies himself to be sounding the sweetest tones ~ John Quincy Adams
Self Absorption quotes by John Quincy Adams
She'll be an excellent novelist: a monster of self-absorption. ~ Lan Samantha Chang
Self Absorption quotes by Lan Samantha Chang
A new generation of Christians is being called to help build a world in which God's gift of life is welcomed, respected and cherished-not rejected, feared as a threat and destroyed. A new age in which love is not greedy or self-seeking, but pure, faithful and genuinely free, open to others, respectful of their dignity, seeking their good, radiating joy and beauty - a new age in which hope liberates us from the shallowness, apathy and self-absorption that deaden our souls and poison our relationships. ~ Pope Benedict XVI
Self Absorption quotes by Pope Benedict XVI
Sometimes it was hard to discern judgment from coldness and self-absorption. ~ Kyle Mills
Self Absorption quotes by Kyle Mills
Jealousy appears to be a redoubtable pitfall for love, on the toll road of self-absorption and unshareability. When love has to remain cloistered and ostentatiously exclusionary, envy may show its pernicious power, cause wounding harms and unchain emotional twisters. ("Why has Shé got stars in the sky?") ~ Erik Pevernagie
Self Absorption quotes by Erik Pevernagie
Anything that inspires addiction or obsession - substances, entertainment, beauty, secrecy - is dangerous in that it can lead to isolation, self-absorption, and disconnection, to paralyzed stasis: an immobility that gathers like a force. ~ Greg Carlisle
Self Absorption quotes by Greg Carlisle
Meditation is a way to be narcissistic without hurting anyone ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Self Absorption quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
To be sick and helpless is a humiliating experience. Prolonged illness also carries the hazard of narcissistic self-absorption. ~ Richard Hofstadter
Self Absorption quotes by Richard Hofstadter
At times ... one is downright thankful for the self-absorption of other people. ~ Gail Godwin
Self Absorption quotes by Gail Godwin
In my case, self-absorption is completely justified. I have never discovered any other subject quite so worthy of my attention. ~ Jay Dratler
Self Absorption quotes by Jay Dratler
I wonder at times if we're not all blind. It just seems there are an abundance of books unread, paint strokes not admired, and performances unattended. So much attention painstakingly sought and not given. ~ Richelle E. Goodrich
Self Absorption quotes by Richelle E. Goodrich
He knew women early and since they spoiled him he became contemptuous of them, of young virgins because they were ignorant, of the others because they were hysterical about things which in his overwhelming self-absorption he took for granted. ~ F Scott Fitzgerald
Self Absorption quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
Selfishness is self-absorption, self-seeking behaviour that either disregards the rights and needs of others or tramples them deliberately in favour of personal gain. ~ Adelyn Birch
Self Absorption quotes by Adelyn Birch
They were here all at once, but not together. Survival took self-absorption, and it made them strangers with nothing to do and no way to relate. Emergencies gave you a shape and a plot to take part in, while death was no story at all. It left you nothing. ~ Ann Brashares
Self Absorption quotes by Ann Brashares
You Russians like to think you're poets but perhaps you're just touchy. ~ Jack Ryan
Self Absorption quotes by Jack Ryan
Rude wasn't so much a heel who happened to be attractive as he was a 100 percent pure concentrate of machismo and self-absorption, a Lothario for his own sake. He could have any woman he wanted, but his objective was never love or even lust; it was heterosexual avidity purely for show. And he seemed not so much to objectify women as to coolly demean them. The object of his affection was solely himself. It was hardcore pornography minus the sex.* ~ Anonymous
Self Absorption quotes by Anonymous
Bodybuilding is men on a stage in their underwear wearing brown paint showing other men their muscles. It is training for appearance only, and at the contest level requires a degree of vanity, narcissism, and self-absorption that I find distasteful and odd ~ Mark Rippetoe
Self Absorption quotes by Mark Rippetoe
Consider suffering's simultaneous self-absorption and incitement to empathy. The former refigures the the self by reducing you to symptoms, conditions, enduring. The latter refigures the self by expanding it. ~ Zach Savich
Self Absorption quotes by Zach Savich
Self-absorption intensifies isolation, but permits it to go unnoticed. ~ Mason Cooley
Self Absorption quotes by Mason Cooley
During adolescence imagination is boundless. The urge toward self-perfection is at its peak. And with all their self- absorption and personalized dreams of glory, youth are in pursuit of something larger than personal passions, some values or ideals to which they might attach their imaginations. ~ Louise J. Kaplan
Self Absorption quotes by Louise J. Kaplan
Of all the alchemies of human connection-sex and childbirth and marriage and friendship-the strangest is this: You can stand up and tell a story that is made entirely, embarrassingly, of "I's," and a listening audience somehow turns each "I" into a "me." This alchemy, of self-absorption into shared experience, is the alchemy of all literature. ~ Adam Gopnik
Self Absorption quotes by Adam Gopnik
Lonely people console themselves with self-absorption or curiosity. ~ Mason Cooley
Self Absorption quotes by Mason Cooley
As long as we live, our self-absorption and our insecurity will walk together, holding hands and swinging them back and forth like two little girls on their way to a pretend playground they can never find. Human nature dictates that most often we will be as insecure as we are self-absorbed. The best possible way to keep from getting sucked into the superficial narcissistic mentality that money, possessions, and sensuality can satisfy and secure us is to deliberately give ourselves to something much greater ... [Christ] showed us that giving, rather than getting, is the means to receiving ... to find yourself, your true self, you must lose yourself in something larger. ~ Beth Moore
Self Absorption quotes by Beth Moore
Hopelessness sets in, when a man is bound up in his shame
living small, within that closed horizon of fantasy and self-absorption. ~ Andrew Comiskey
Self Absorption quotes by Andrew Comiskey
With their aggression, intensity, self-absorption, and endless self-promotion, our competitors don't realize how they jeopardize their own efforts (to say nothing of their sanity). We will challenge the myth of the self-assured genius for whom doubt and introspection is foreign, as well as challenge the myth of pained, tortured artist who must sacrifice his health for his work. Where they are both divorced from reality and divorced from other people, we will be deeply connected, aware, and learning from all of it. ~ Ryan Holiday
Self Absorption quotes by Ryan Holiday
That her own self-deception and self-absorption, her own slavery to the society and family in which she had been brought up, had reduced this blameless man to a weeping wreck struck her as horrific. She saw more clearly than she had ever seen before that she must change, or keep hurting the people who truly loved her. ~ Shamim Sarif
Self Absorption quotes by Shamim Sarif
False humility is quite like the worst of both worlds: both that of Meekness and that of Conceit. ~ Criss Jami
Self Absorption quotes by Criss Jami
This cat, on the other hand, was its own animal. All cats give that impression, of course, but instead of the mindless animal self-absorption that passes for secret wisdom in the creatures, Greebo radiated genuine intelligence. He also radiated a smell that would have knocked over a wall and caused sinus trouble in a dead fox. ~ Terry Pratchett
Self Absorption quotes by Terry Pratchett
Acting requires absorption, but not self-absorption and, in the actor's mind, the question must always be 'Why am I doing this?,' not 'How am I doing it? ~ Maureen Lipman
Self Absorption quotes by Maureen Lipman
It's about time we stop mistaking self-knowledge for self-absorption - and realize that nobody has a monopoly on selfishness. ~ Meghan Daum
Self Absorption quotes by Meghan Daum
The man who suffers from a sense of sin is suffering from a particular kind of self-love. In all this vast universe the thing that appears to him of most importance is that he himself should be virtuous. It is a grave defect in certain forms of traditional religion that they have encouraged this particular kind of self-absorption. ~ Bertrand Russell
Self Absorption quotes by Bertrand Russell
Babies and the old are permitted self-absorption. In between, it provokes resentment. ~ Mason Cooley
Self Absorption quotes by Mason Cooley
I am not the center of the universe. And it's a lesson that I keep having to learn; it's my ongoing work, I'd say. And being in a career that is predicated on a degree of self-absorption, that is a tricky thing to negotiate sometimes. ~ Patrick Fabian
Self Absorption quotes by Patrick Fabian
I am talking about self absorbtion. If you think about it, the human race is pretty self absorbed. Racism might be the symptoms of a greater disease, What I mean is, as a human, I am flawed in that it is difficult for me to consider others before myself. It feels like I have a fight against this force, this current within me that more often than not wants to avoid serious issues and wants to please myself, buy things for myself, feed myself, entertain myself, and all that. All I am saying is that if we , as a species could fix our self absorption, we could end a lot of pain in the world. ~ Donald Miller
Self Absorption quotes by Donald Miller
Love draws you out of your cocoon of self-absorption to attune to others. Love allows you to really see another person, holistically, with care, concern, and compassion. ~ Barbara L. Fredrickson
Self Absorption quotes by Barbara L. Fredrickson
Selfishness and self-absorption are deadly charm-exterminators. ~ Loretta Young
Self Absorption quotes by Loretta Young
…wilderness backpacking can be a form of spiritual practice…Exposure to the harsh realities and fierce beauties of a world not aimed at my comfort has a way of cutting through the self-absorption of my life. The uncontrolled mystery of nature puts the ego in check and invites the soul back (in more than one way) to the ground of its being. It elicits the soul's deepest desire, enforces a rigorous discipline, and demands a life marked by activism and resistance. It reminds me, in short, that spiritual practice – far from being anything ethereal – is a highly tactile, embodied, and visceral affair. (p 4) ~ Belden C. Lane
Self Absorption quotes by Belden C. Lane
Being with Karen had made him realize how much the past few days (rather, nights) had changed him. He had always been a loner, but on those nights when he had been Don Juan and Casanova, and yes, de Sade, too, sex was better than it had ever been before. That was what frightened him. for he knew those nights were only masturbatory fantasies that pulled him inward, toward the self, barring the rest of humanity from his life. And he knew that if it continued, it would be harder and harder to return, and ultimately he would want to stay in the dreams forever. ~ Chet Williamson
Self Absorption quotes by Chet Williamson
Humility is by far the most spiritual virtue of the lot. The only way by which one may cease obsessing over himself is to wholly step outside his flesh. But who could do this by himself? And who would really want to under his natural pretense? And even if somehow he could and he succeeded, would not it be artificial? Would not he seem far too aware of his own talents of achieving humility for it to be such? Alternatively, he would need a distraction, something else to love; it is not that the Humbleman thinks poorly of himself, nor highly for that matter, but rather he does not think of himself at all - and this is because he is too busy loving something or someone else to do it. For the humility of this kind 'rears its head' as the most love-driven and free, spiritual of virtues; whereas its opposite, pride, the most self-imprisoning human vice. ~ Criss Jami
Self Absorption quotes by Criss Jami
Melancholy betrays the world for the sake of knowledge. But in its tenacious self-absorption it embraces dead objects in its contemplation, in order to redeem them ~ Walter Benjamin
Self Absorption quotes by Walter Benjamin
Relationships matter. They matter as much as exercise and nutrition. And not all relationships help us reach our goals. God doesn't give us crying, pooping children because he wants to advance our careers. He gives them to us for the same reason he confused language at the Tower of Babel, to create chaos and deter us from investing too much energy in the gluttonous idols of self-absorption. ~ Donald Miller
Self Absorption quotes by Donald Miller
But if you tell folks you're a college student, folks are so impressed. You can be a student in anything and not have to know anything. Just say toxicology or marine biokinesis, and the person you're talking to will change the subject to himself. If this doesn't work, mention the neural synapses of embryonic pigeons. ~ Chuck Palahniuk
Self Absorption quotes by Chuck Palahniuk
the great majority of people worldwide remain in the thrall of tribal organized religions, led by men who claim supernatural power in order to compete for the obedience and resources of the faithful. We are addicted to tribal conflict, which is harmless and entertaining if sublimated into team sports, but deadly when expressed as real-world ethnic, religious, and ideological struggles. There are other hereditary biases. Too paralyzed with self-absorption to protect the rest of life, we continue to tear down the natural environment, our species' irreplaceable and most precious heritage. And it is still taboo to bring up population policies aiming for an optimum people density, geographic distribution, and age distribution. ~ Edward O. Wilson
Self Absorption quotes by Edward O. Wilson
David Bowie emerged as a rock star in the late '60s. And as Ken Tucker wrote, "In the face of the hippy era's sincerity, intimacy and generosity, Bowie presented irony, distance and self-absorption. His song 'Changes' announced the arrival of a new counterculture," unquote. ~ David Bowie
Self Absorption quotes by David Bowie
We all want to be stars. The idea of being revered and envied must be encoded somewhere deep in our DNA. So must the desire to revere and envy others we imagine to be better, more accepted, and more popular than we are. The only problem is that the most necessary qualities required to be a celebrity
self-absorption, egomania, shamelessness
are the least attractive in a friend. ~ Tonya Hurley
Self Absorption quotes by Tonya Hurley
The humble woman is surprised by all the good that she sees around her rather than scandalized by what she cannot judge anyway. The humble woman is grateful for her successes but not disheartened by her failures. She enjoys her gifts and readily admits her mistakes. She maintains a sense of humor, whether the news from Wall Street is giddy or glum. She faces her character defects without getting discouraged. Her humble confidence in God's love and her enchantment with the kabod Yahweh shape a hedge of thorns against self-absorption and frees her for an unselfconscious presence to others. ~ Brennan Manning
Self Absorption quotes by Brennan Manning
Self-absorption in all its forms kills empathy, let alone compassion. When we focus on ourselves, our world contracts as our problems and preoccupations loom large. But when we focus on others, our world expands. Our own problems drift to the periphery of the mind and so seem smaller, and we increase our capacity for connection - or compassionate action. ~ Daniel Goleman
Self Absorption quotes by Daniel Goleman
One of the greatest theological challenges of our time is to move our worship beyond self-absorption. ~ Kelly M. Kapic
Self Absorption quotes by Kelly M. Kapic
Unencumbered by any concept of sin, the Master doesn't see evil as a force to resist, but simply as an opaqueness, a state of self-absorption which is in disharmony with the universal process, so that, as with a dirty window, the light can't shine through. This freedom from moral categories allows him his great compassion for the wicked and the selfish. ~ Lao-Tzu
Self Absorption quotes by Lao-Tzu
Having a baby dragged me, kicking and screaming, from the world of self-absorption. ~ Paul Reiser
Self Absorption quotes by Paul Reiser
Never underestimate the power of self-absorption, including your parents' self-absorption. ~ Rita Mae Brown
Self Absorption quotes by Rita Mae Brown
I wasn't involved in anything. I wasn't out - you know, I know I wasn't in ACT UP. I wasn't with Larry Kramer. I wasn't by his side. I wasn't saying what I should do, because, by all accounts, I was a drug addict and an alcoholic. And I was living in a complete bubble of self-absorption. ~ Elton John
Self Absorption quotes by Elton John
It didn't occur to me then, though it certainly does now, that it was years since I'd roused myself from my stupor of misery and self-absorption; between anomie and trance, inertia and parenthesis and gnawing my own heart out, there were a lot of small, easy, everyday kindnesses I'd missed out on; and even the word `kindness' was liking rising from unconsciousness into some hospital awareness of voices, and people, from a stream of digitized machines. ~ Donna Tartt
Self Absorption quotes by Donna Tartt
From the cave to the skyscraper, from the club to weapons of mass destruction, from the tautological life of the tribe to the era of globalization, the fictions of literature have multiplied human experiences, preventing us from succumbing to lethargy, self-absorption, resignation. Nothing has sown so much disquiet, so disturbed our imagination and our desires as the life of lies we add, thanks to literature, to the one we have, so we can be protagonists in the great adventures, the great passions real life will never give us. The lies of literature become truths through us, the readers transformed, infected with longings and, through the fault of fiction, permanently questioning a mediocre reality. Sorcery, when literature offers us the hope of having what we do not have, being what we are not, acceding to that impossible existence where like pagan gods we feel mortal and eternal at the same time, that introduces into our spirits non-conformity and rebellion, which are behind all the heroic deeds that have contributed to the reduction of violence in human relationships. Reducing violence, not ending it. Because ours will always be, fortunately, an unfinished story. That is why we have to continue dreaming, reading, and writing, the most effective way we have found to alleviate our mortal condition, to defeat the corrosion of time, and to transform the impossible into possibility. ~ Mario Vargas Llosa
Self Absorption quotes by Mario Vargas Llosa
God is love. But love can also be hated when it challenges us to transcend ourselves. It is not a romantic "good feeling." Redemption is not "wellness," it is not about basking in self-indulgence; on the contrary it is a liberation from imprisonment in self-absorption. This liberation comes at a price: the anguish of the Cross. The prophecy of light and that of the Cross belong together. ~ Pope Benedict XVI
Self Absorption quotes by Pope Benedict XVI
I'd like to say I'm not self-absorbed compared to others, but that's hard to say since I'm far too self-absorbed to pry into others' self-absorption. ~ Anonymous
Self Absorption quotes by Anonymous
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow. Awareness of others is a healthy antidote to this self-focus. ~ Kevin Malarkey
Self Absorption quotes by Kevin Malarkey
Self absorption is anti-seductive; it is a sign of insecurity. ~ Robert Greene
Self Absorption quotes by Robert Greene
This is the study of the whole realm of Forms, working out in full detail all the relationships in which the various ones of them stand to one another. So the rise to full life, in our self-absorption into our intellectual origins and natures, is itself an exercise of philosophy, of philosophy at its essential core of active knowledge of Forms. ~ John M. Cooper
Self Absorption quotes by John M. Cooper
There were few other passengers: a man in an overcoat, his head sunk against his chest; a couple with arms around each other, impervious to their surroundings; and a teenage boy with a black scarf wound round his neck, Zorro-style. Isabel smiled to herself: a microcosm of our condition, she thought. Loneliness and despair; love and its self-absorption; and sixteen, which was a state all its own. ~ Alexander McCall Smith
Self Absorption quotes by Alexander McCall Smith
What might once have been called whining is now exalted as a process of asserting selfhood; self-absorption is regarded as a form of self-expression ... ~ Wendy Kaminer
Self Absorption quotes by Wendy Kaminer
The attendant opened the door, and the faint barking Nina had heard before became frantic and shrill. Nina stepped into the concrete cell block and stopped, blown out of her self-absorption by the row of gray metal cages where dogs barked to get her attention. She let her breath out, horrified. "Oh, God, this is awful." "Spay your pets." The attendant stopped in front of the next to last cage. "Here you go." She jerked her head again. "Perky." Nina ~ Jennifer Crusie
Self Absorption quotes by Jennifer Crusie
To be an artist at all is like living in Switzerland during a world war. To be an artist in Zurich, in 1917, implies a degree of self-absorption that would have glazed over the eyes of Narcissus. ~ Tom Stoppard
Self Absorption quotes by Tom Stoppard
The arrogance of belonging is not about egotism or self-absorption. In a strange way, it's the opposite; it is a divine force that will actually take you out of yourself and allow you to engage more fully with life. Because often what keeps you from creative living is your self-absorption (your self-doubt, your self-disgust, your self-judgment, your crushing sense of self-protection). The arrogance of belonging pulls you out of the darkest depths of self-hatred - not by saying "I am the greatest!" but merely by saying "I am here! ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Self Absorption quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
Conscience is the moralized form of self-absorption. ~ Mason Cooley
Self Absorption quotes by Mason Cooley
She might have seen that what had bowed her head so profoundly - the thought of the world's concern at her situation - was founded on illusion. She was not an existence, an experience, a passion, a structure of sensations, to anybody but herself. To all humankind besides, Tess was only a passing thought. ~ Thomas Hardy
Self Absorption quotes by Thomas Hardy
Ours has been called a culture of narcissism. The label is apt but can be misleading. It reads colloquially as selfishness and self-absorption. But these images do not capture the anxiety behind our search for mirrors. We are insecure in our understanding of ourselves, and this insecurity breeds a new preoccupation with the question of who we are. We search for ways to see ourselves. The computer is a new mirror, the first psychological machine. Beyond its nature as an analytical engine lies its second nature as an evocative object. ~ Sherry Turkle
Self Absorption quotes by Sherry Turkle
Particularly with middle-class people, self-absorption is a struggle. ~ Ben Lewin
Self Absorption quotes by Ben Lewin
There's nothing that makes you more miserable (or less interesting) than self-absorption . ~ Timothy Keller
Self Absorption quotes by Timothy Keller
Why should caring for others begin with the self? There is an abundance of rather vague ideas about this issue, which I am sure neuroscience will one day resolve. Let me offer my own "hand waving" explanation by saying that advanced empathy requires both mental mirroring and mental separation. The mirroring allows the sight of another person in a particular emotional state to induce a similar state in us. We literally feel their pain, loss, delight, disgust, etc., through so-called shared representations. Neuroimaging shows that our brains are similarly activated as those of people we identify with. This is an ancient mechanism: It is automatic, starts early in life, and probably characterizes all mammals. But we go beyond this, and this is where mental separation comes in. We parse our own state from the other's. Otherwise, we would be like the toddler who cries when she hears another cry but fails to distinguish her own distress from the other's. How could she care for the other if she can't even tell where her feelings are coming from? In the words of psychologist Daniel Goleman, "Self-absorption kills empathy." The child needs to disentangle herself from the other so as to pinpoint the actual source of her feelings. ~ Frans De Waal
Self Absorption quotes by Frans De Waal
When we focus on others, our world expands. ~ Daniel Goleman
Self Absorption quotes by Daniel Goleman
If Sally had been in an accident or come down with some overtly physical disease, I would not hesitate to tell him about it, confident that his sympathies would flow in my direction as a matter of course. But psychosis defies empathy; few people who have not experienced it up close buy the idea of a behavioral disease. It has the ring of an excuse, a license for self-absorption on the most extreme scale. It suggests that one chooses madness and not the other way around. (86) ~ Michael Greenberg
Self Absorption quotes by Michael Greenberg
Make wise choices about what you read. Read only what is necessary or worthwhile. And then take the time to read carefully. One book read with concentration and reflected upon is worth a hundred flashed through without any absorption at all. ~ Eknath Easwaran
Self Absorption quotes by Eknath Easwaran
Pigments such as haemoglobin are coloured because they absorb light of particular colours (bands of light, as in a rainbow) and reflect back light of other colours. The pattern of light absorbed by a compound is known as its absorption spectrum. When binding oxygen, haemoglobin absorbs light in the blue-green and yellow parts of the spectrum, but reflects back red light, and this is the reason why we perceive arterial blood as a vivid red colour. The absorption spectrum changes when oxygen dissociates from haemoglobin in venous blood. Deoxyhaemoglobin absorbs light across the green part of the spectrum, and reflects back red and blue light. This gives venous blood its purple colour. ~ Nick Lane
Self Absorption quotes by Nick Lane
Focusing on individual nutrients, their identities, their contents in food, their tissue concentrations, and their biological mechanisms, is like using math and physics to catch balls. It's not the way nature evolved, and it makes proper nutrition far more difficult than it needs to be. Our bodies use countless mechanisms, strategically placed throughout our digestion, absorption, and transport and metabolic pathways, to effortlessly ensure tissue concentrations consistent with good health - no database consultation required. But as long as we let reductionism guide our research and our understanding of nutrition, good health will remain unattainable. ~ T. Colin Campbell
Self Absorption quotes by T. Colin Campbell
The larger the unit of capital present, the easier the transaction called emission of credit. Centralized lending of this kind (which is today universal) actively promotes the absorption of the small man by the great, the reduction of small property owners to a proletarian condition. ~ Hilaire Belloc
Self Absorption quotes by Hilaire Belloc
This afforded an opportunity for a close encounter with Earth as it might appear to an alien spacecraft, and Carl Sagan proposed using this as a "control experiment for the search for extraterrestrial life by modern interplanetary spacecraft." The instruments detected the spectral signature of the chlorophyll from green plants, and signs of an obviously life-altered atmosphere. As Sagan and colleagues wrote in their paper "A search for life on Earth from the Galileo spacecraft" published in Nature, they found evidence of abundant gaseous oxygen, a widely distributed surface pigment with a sharp absorption edge in the red part of the visible spectrum, and atmospheric methane ~ David Grinspoon
Self Absorption quotes by David Grinspoon
in this you have failed
you have invalidated your dysfunctional efforts
of innocence
of perverted virginity
with a mangy face before the eye of God
not even summations of crawling
not even rust cutters or combustion
as if to test your blue vaginal mirrors
inside a Protestant Crimea
listening to your fallacious absorption neurosis

you've forfeited your flames
you've cast into the moat
salacious bonfire bathing
you've given up the power of deepened torturing rums
of magnetic chromosomal nerves
for a weakly neutered clairaudience of failure ~ Will Alexander
Self Absorption quotes by Will Alexander
We have known for many years that we need vitamin D to facilitate calcium absorption and promote bone mineralization. ~ Andrew Weil
Self Absorption quotes by Andrew Weil
Time and rest are needed for absorption. Psychologists confirm that it is really in the summer that our muscles learn to skate and in the winter, how to swim. ~ Jacques Barzun
Self Absorption quotes by Jacques Barzun
Hal finds himself riveted at something about the degenerating game that seems so terribly abstract and fraught with implications and consequences that even thinking about how to articulate it seems so complexly stressful that being almost incapacitated with absorption is almost the only way out of the complex stress. ~ David Foster Wallace
Self Absorption quotes by David Foster Wallace
As each individual is electrically alive and dynamic, so yoga is a living, dynamic force in life. In order to savor its essence, one needs a religiously attentive dynamic practice done with awareness and absorption. ~ B.K.S. Iyengar
Self Absorption quotes by B.K.S. Iyengar
We do not dance to reach a certain point on the floor, but simply to dance. Energy itself, as William Blake said, is eternal delight - and all life is to be lived in the spirit of rapt absorption in an arabesque of rhythms. ~ Alan W. Watts
Self Absorption quotes by Alan W. Watts
Death is an unsurpassable limit of human existence ... We discover the relationship which is the basis for all feelings of reverence, fear, awe, wonder, sorrow, and deference in the face of something greater and more powerful ... Only such a being-unto-death can guarantee the precondition that the Da-sein be able to free itself from its absorption in, its submission and surrender of itself to the things and relationships of everyday living and to return to itself. ~ Medard Boss

THREE STAGES OF MEDITATION There are three stages in meditation. The first is what is called Dharana, concentrating the mind upon an object. I try to concentrate my mind upon this glass, excluding every other object from my mind except this glass. But the mind is wavering. When it has become strong and does not waver so much, it is called Dhyana, meditation. And then there is a still higher state when the differentiation between the glass and myself is lost - Samadhi or absorption. The mind and the glass are identical. I do not see any difference. All the senses stop and all powers that have been working through other channels of other senses are focused in the mind. Then this glass is under the power of the mind entirely. This is to be realised. It is a tremendous play played by the Yogis. ~ Swami Vivekananda
Self Absorption quotes by Swami Vivekananda
If a writer has to find a rhythm if his novel is to come 'right', a rhythm which he may well discover in the rhythm of an individual sentence, then likewise a reader has to find a corresponding rhythm in his reading, which may equally well be discovered in responding to local effect.
The intimacy of this relationship between writer and reader is well caught in a recent observation made by Graham Greene, 'Novels should always have, if not dull, then at least level patches. That's where the excessive use of film technique, cutting sharply from intensity
to intensity is harmful. . . . The writer needs level passages for his subconscious to work up to the sharp scenes . . . and the reader needs those level patches too, so that he can share in the processes of creation - not by conscious analysis, but by absorption?'
To reflect on the wide-ranging effects of rhythm
in reading would seem to be one way of making a start on tracing that obscure route that leads from 'absorption' to 'conscious analysis'. ~ Ian Gregor
