The South Col is a vast, rocky area, maybe the size of four football pitches, strewn with the remnants of old expeditions.
It was here in 1996, in the fury of the storm, that men and women had struggled for their lives to find their tents. Few had managed it. Their bodies still lay here, as cold as marble, many now partially buried beneath snow and ice.
It was a somber place: a grave that their families could never visit.
There was an eeriness to it all--a place of utter isolation; a place unvisited by all but those strong enough to reach it. Helicopters can barely land at base camp, let alone up here.
No amount of money can put a man up here. Only a man's spirit can do that.
I liked that.
The wind now blew in strong gusts over the lip of the col and ruffled the torn material of the wrecked tents.
It felt as if the mountain were daring me to proceed. ~ Bear Grylls
Football Pitches quotes by Bear Grylls
My foundation now has some 120 football pitches laid out for children, a lot of them immigrants. We live in a multicultural society. ~ Johan Cruyff
Football Pitches quotes by Johan Cruyff
I'm not a video game guy. I would rather throw around a football. ~ Jeremy Piven
Football Pitches quotes by Jeremy Piven
What if you wake up hung-over the following morning, not dead, but realizing that you had killed somebody? Even worse, what if you wake up in the morning realizing you destroyed the things you loved most in your life? When she regained consciousness in the hospital scared and alone, Kate realized the nightmare was a reality… her parents were dead… her soul-mate was in prison… her life would never be the same.

Through the eyes of many, Troy Trindle had it all… he was good-looking, popular, captain of the football team and dating the head cheerleader. What he lacked were the basic necessities; food, shelter and a family.

Kate and Troy's worlds collide when she moves to Alabama to resume training for a spot on the Olympic Gymnastics Team. ~ Wendi Farquharson Finn
Football Pitches quotes by Wendi Farquharson Finn
My little brothers loved baseball. I'm not as big on that as basketball or football, but I understand the game. ~ Jurnee Smollett
Football Pitches quotes by Jurnee Smollett
You need to just understand where the ball is and how to use your body. Timing your jump the right way is crucial. Learn how to use your body to shield the receiver and box him out, again, much like a rebound. Trying to beat a receiver to a ball can be a lot like you're posting him up. Rebounding is great practice because you can employ those skills - body position, leverage, timing - a lot more than you might in a football game or practice if the quarterback doesn't look your way. ~ Antonio Cromartie
Football Pitches quotes by Antonio Cromartie
Look, nobody's trying to kill me right now and that's just fine. If they don't
like me, that's just how it goes. I got over needing people to LIKE me in tenth
grade, when I spied the captain of the cheerleading squad on her knees in
front of the offensive line of the football team under the bleachers, one day after school. I figured that wasn't the life for me. ~ MaryJanice Davidson
Football Pitches quotes by MaryJanice Davidson
To think that the ruler of the universe will run to my assistance and bend the laws of nature for me is the height of arrogance. That implies that everyone else (such as the opposing football team, driver, student, parent) is de-selected, unfavored by God, and that I am special, above it all. ~ Dan Barker
Football Pitches quotes by Dan Barker
Life is transient and death is unfathomable, but questions nonetheless abound. What is the driving purpose behind the prosodic life of an ordinary person such as me? What emotional rhythms, pitches, pauses, stresses, and intonations drive the meter of person's life? When the church bells toll my parting day, what tone will it strike in the hearts of other people, if any? Is there a person whoever traversed this crusty rock that we call planet Earth who did not wish for other people to remember them after their death? I confess sharing the vain longing of all men, however humble, to be remembered, not for the crimes that I committed but for fully expressing the poetic gift of life. When I ask what other people will think when I die, I must also ask why I lived, what did I live for, and what joy did I bring other people, if any. What acts, thoughts, and deeds make people beloved? What resounding chime resonates with all loving people? What magical filament binds us? What serves as the ethereal umbilical cord that causes all conscience stricken humans to crave the same universal sense of being? ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Football Pitches quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
It was fun, having speed and being able to jump. Especially playing football. I played wide receiver and defensive back. ~ Jacoby Ellsbury
Football Pitches quotes by Jacoby Ellsbury
There is a movement in club football, which I don't necessarily consider a prime example of solidarity, because it leads us to conclude the rich are getting richer and they are using everything in the market to create an exodus from Africa. ~ Sepp Blatter
Football Pitches quotes by Sepp Blatter
One of the more bizarre games I played as a kid was something called 'kill the man.' It was a cross between football and rugby, which found the person carrying the ball a target of some hungry tacklers. I still don't know why we enjoyed the game because it was impossible to win. ~ Chuck Todd
Football Pitches quotes by Chuck Todd
Look at a football field. It looks like a big movie screen. This is theatre. Football combines the strategy of chess. It's part ballet. It's part battleground, part playground. We clarify, amplify and glorify the game with our footage, the narration and that music, and in the end create an inspirational piece of footage. ~ Steve Sabol
Football Pitches quotes by Steve Sabol
Monday Night Football started in 1970, and when it started, it was something extremely special because sports had not been aired in prime time. So, it was a novelty, and a lot of people thought it wouldn't work, and, of course, it worked spectacularly well. ~ Al Michaels
Football Pitches quotes by Al Michaels
A team that has character doesn't need stimulation. ~ Tom Landry
Football Pitches quotes by Tom Landry
There are a couple hard things. One, getting a funny idea that people can relate to; a funny idea or a funny script; there's a million pitches. ~ David Spade
Football Pitches quotes by David Spade
High on the list of things I've been meaning to do since I moved to New York in 2004 is going up to a Columbia University football game. ~ Willie Geist
Football Pitches quotes by Willie Geist
Characters may lend the action a certain colouring, but it is what happens that comes first. To overlook this while watching a tragedy would be like treating a football game simply as the acts of a set of solitary individuals, or as chance for each of them to display 'personality'. The fact that some players behave as though this is precisely what football games are about should not distract us from this point. ~ Terry Eagleton
Football Pitches quotes by Terry Eagleton
I think a mantra I always told myself is, "No matter how many times somebody pitches the ball at you, if you swing every time, eventually one of them is going to connect." Being yourself and persistence are two things that became my daily mantras, I suppose. ~ Jamie Bell
Football Pitches quotes by Jamie Bell
I knew nothing about football, then someone showed me a film of Petit and I realised how interesting the game could be. He is divine. When I met him I could barely speak, he was so gorgeous. Women will love that show. ~ Ruby Wax
Football Pitches quotes by Ruby Wax
As I get older, the tyranny that football exerts over my life, and therefore over the lives of people around me, is less reasonable and less attractive. Family and friends know, after long years of wearying experience, that the fixture list always has the last word in any arrangement; they understand, or at least accept, that christenings or weddings or any gatherings, which in other families would take unquestioned precedence, can only be plotted after consultation. So football is regarded as a given disability that has to be worked around. If I were wheelchair-bound, nobody close to me would organise anything in a top-floor flat, so why would they plan anything for a winter Saturday afternoon. ~ Nick Hornby
Football Pitches quotes by Nick Hornby
I once read that if the folds in the cerebral cortex were smoothed out it would cover a card table. That seemed quite unbelievable but it did make me wonder just how big the cortex would be if you ironed it out. I thought it might just about cover a family-sized pizza: not bad, but no card-table. I was astonished to realize that nobody seems to know the answer. A quick search yielded the following estimates for the smoothed out dimensions of the cerebral cortex of the human brain.

An article in Bioscience in November 1987 by Julie Ann Miller claimed the cortex was a "quarter-metre square." That is napkin-sized, about ten inches by ten inches. Scientific American magazine in September 1992 upped the ante considerably with an estimated of 1 1/2 square metres; thats a square of brain forty inches on each side, getting close to the card-table estimate. A psychologist at the University of Toronto figured it would cover the floor of his living room (I haven't seen his living room), but the prize winning estimate so far is from the British magazine New Scientist's poster of the brain published in 1993 which claimed that the cerebral cortex, if flattened out, would cover a tennis court. How can there be such disagreement? How can so many experts not know how big the cortex is? I don't know, but I'm on the hunt for an expert who will say the cortex, when fully spread out, will cover a football field. A Canadian football field. ~ Jay Ingram
Football Pitches quotes by Jay Ingram
There's no "I" on the football field. We have a total commitment to each other when we're out there. There is no doubt. It doesn't matter. The wins and losses of the game don't resonate with us. What resonates with us is "how much effort would you give for the man next to you." ~ Ray Lewis
Football Pitches quotes by Ray Lewis
I lost count of the number of referees who came to me both at Derby and Forest and said, 'I'd just like to express my thanks. I love matches involving your team. We never have any trouble with them. ~ Brian Howard Clough
Football Pitches quotes by Brian Howard Clough
To be the best you have to forget partying and concentrate all your energies on the football. ~ Michael Owen
Football Pitches quotes by Michael Owen
Football is a fertility festival. Eleven sperm trying to get into the egg. I feel sorry for the goalkeeper. ~ Bjork
Football Pitches quotes by Bjork
We're fortunate to have football on the space station. ~ Scott Kelly
Football Pitches quotes by Scott Kelly
English football is in a bad way because the foreign players here are so good, so dominant. ~ Kevin Keegan
Football Pitches quotes by Kevin Keegan
I love playing football. I started playing for a school team, which is fun, and I play a lot of five a side. I nowhere near good enough to go professional but it's definitely one of my main hobbies. I play three times a week. ~ Matthew Lewis
Football Pitches quotes by Matthew Lewis
I'd heard of Vlad Dracul, but only the name. The kids at Cotton Maher never said much except things like "The football team's up against Vlad this Saturday. Pray for them."
When I'd heard that, I'd asked the kid who'd said it what the big deal was.
"Shut up," he'd explained. ~ Douglas Rees
Football Pitches quotes by Douglas Rees
When I was at school, you couldn't draw and be into football, too. If you were into art, then you were seen as an absolute pansy, and there was no way you'd be admitted to the guys' world of football. ~ Peter Capaldi
Football Pitches quotes by Peter Capaldi
Sandro's holding is face. You can tell from that it's a knee injury. ~ Dion Dublin
Football Pitches quotes by Dion Dublin
The Rose Bowl is the only bowl I've ever seen that I didn't have to clean. ~ Erma Bombeck
Football Pitches quotes by Erma Bombeck
Growing up Southern is a privilege, really. It's more than where you were born, it's an idea and state of mind that seems imparted at birth. It's more than loving fried chicken, football, beer, and country music. It's being hospitable and devoted to screen porches, magnolias, red velvet cake, coca cola, and each other. We don't become southern--we're born that way. ~ Hank Williams Jr.
Football Pitches quotes by Hank Williams Jr.
Then I went to UCLA - so of course I became a huge Bruin basketball fan ... and later came to football. ~ Leigh Steinberg
Football Pitches quotes by Leigh Steinberg
To be a footballer means being a privileged interpreter of the feelings and dreams of thousands of people. ~ Cesar Luis Menotti
Football Pitches quotes by Cesar Luis Menotti
It was our worst-ever day, the worst result in my history, ever. Even as a player I don't think I ever lost 6-1. ~ Alex Ferguson
Football Pitches quotes by Alex Ferguson
A lot of the lessons that are taught in football will promote success in anything you get into after football; for me, it just happens to be music. Being disciplined. Good character. Trying to do the right thing, and working hard. ~ Sam Hunt
Football Pitches quotes by Sam Hunt
He passes me an envelope, and inside are two tickets to see Seattle play football. ~ Kristen Proby
Football Pitches quotes by Kristen Proby
The Super Bowl is a realistic goal. ~ Drew Brees
Football Pitches quotes by Drew Brees
The goal of argumentation is to make a case so forceful (note the metaphor) that skeptics are coerced into believing it - they are powerless to deny it while still claiming to be rational. In principle, it is the ideas themselves that are, as we say, compelling, but their champions are not always averse to helping the ideas along with tactics of verbal dominance, among them intimidation ("Clearly . . ."), threat ("It would be unscientific to . . ."), authority ("As Popper showed . . ."), insult ("This work lacks the necessary rigor for . . ."), and belittling ("Few people today seriously believe that . . ."). Perhaps this is why H. L. Mencken wrote that "college football would be more interesting if the faculty played instead of the students. ~ Steven Pinker
