If," ["the management consultant"] said tersely, "we could for a moment move on to the subject of fiscal policy. . ."
"Fiscal policy!" whooped Ford Prefect. "Fiscal policy!"
The management consultant gave him a look that only a lungfish could have copied.
"Fiscal policy. . ." he repeated, "that is what I said."
"How can you have money," demanded Ford, "if none of you actually produces anything? It doesn't grow on trees you know."
"If you would allow me to continue.. ."
Ford nodded dejectedly.
"Thank you. Since we decided a few weeks ago to adopt the leaf as legal tender, we have, of course, all become immensely rich."
Ford stared in disbelief at the crowd who were murmuring appreciatively at this and greedily fingering the wads of leaves with which their track suits were stuffed.
"But we have also," continued the management consultant, "run into a small inflation problem on account of the high level of leaf availability, which means that, I gather, the current going rate has something like three deciduous forests buying one ship's peanut."
Murmurs of alarm came from the crowd. The management consultant waved them down.
"So in order to obviate this problem," he continued, "and effectively revalue the leaf, we are about to embark on a massive defoliation campaign, and. . .er, burn down all the forests. I think you'll all agree that's a sensible move under the circumstances."
The crowd seemed a little uncertain about th ~ Douglas Adams
Fiscal Policy quotes by Douglas Adams
I'm not trying to be diplomatic. I'm trying to be more nuanced and realistic. I think there has to be a serious examination of the shortcomings of the Euro structure. Euro central institutions, whether it be fiscal policy, monetary policy, financial regulation, are simply not as robust as they are in a currency that has a national government behind it. ~ Stephen Harper
Fiscal Policy quotes by Stephen Harper

Fiscal Policy quotes by Douglas Adams
A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy... ~ Alexander Fraser Tytler
Fiscal Policy quotes by Alexander Fraser Tytler
I am conservative with a small 'c.' It's possible to be conservative in fiscal policy, and tolerant on moral issues or questions of freedom of expression. ~ Mick Jagger
Fiscal Policy quotes by Mick Jagger
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the people discover they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the canidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy
to be followed by a dictatorship. ~ Alexander Fraser Tytler
Fiscal Policy quotes by Alexander Fraser Tytler
We don't have a trillion-dollar debt because we haven't taxed enough; we have a trillion-dollar debt because we spend too much. ~ Ronald Reagan
Fiscal Policy quotes by Ronald Reagan
Too often in recent history liberal governments have been wrecked on rocks of loose fiscal policy. ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt
Fiscal Policy quotes by Franklin D. Roosevelt
Popular as Keynesian fiscal policy may be, many economists are skeptical that it works. They argue that fine-tuning the economy is a virtually impossible task, and that fiscal-stimulus programs are usually too small, and arrive too late, to make a difference. ~ James Surowiecki
Fiscal Policy quotes by James Surowiecki
Lord, the money we do spend on Government and it's not one bit better than the government we got for one-third the money twenty years ago. ~ Will Rogers
Fiscal Policy quotes by Will Rogers
This nation is on a course where if we don't do something about it, get federal situation, the fiscal policy [under control], we're Greece. We're a banana republic. Our status as a nation is threatened by what we've got coming at us in the area of deficit and debt. And it's only a few more years, at the most, that we have to work with here before the market says, 'Sorry, your currency is something we can not continue to defend.' ~ Judd Gregg
Fiscal Policy quotes by Judd Gregg
Fiscal policy is not just, or even not even principally, the purview of the president. ~ Carly Fiorina
Fiscal Policy quotes by Carly Fiorina
There is a very serious fiscal-policy question of, 'Are we running our overall fiscal policy such that we as a government can pay our bills?' ~ Jacob Lew
Fiscal Policy quotes by Jacob Lew
I would like to see Greece as a case study, an opportunity for Europe to strengthen its coordination of fiscal policy. ~ George Papandreou
Fiscal Policy quotes by George Papandreou
Much fiscal policy is implemented, not through spending increases, but through tax credits and other so-called tax expenditures. The markets should respond to them as they do spending cuts, with little contraction in economic activity. ~ Alan Greenspan
Fiscal Policy quotes by Alan Greenspan
At the federal level, the fiscal stimulus of 2008 and 2009 supported economic output, but the effects of that stimulus faded; by 2011, federal fiscal policy actions became a drag on output growth when the recovery was still weak. ~ Janet Yellen
Fiscal Policy quotes by Janet Yellen
The basic prescription for preventing deflation is straightforward, at least in principle: Use monetary and fiscal policy as needed to support aggregate spending, in a manner as nearly consistent as possible with full utilization of economic resources and low and stable inflation. In other words, the best way to get out of trouble is not to get into it in the first place. ~ Ben Bernanke
Fiscal Policy quotes by Ben Bernanke
I've always believed in expansionary monetary policy and if necessary fiscal policy when the economy is depressed. ~ Paul Krugman
Fiscal Policy quotes by Paul Krugman
We've got to be explicit that the road to greater economic success does not lie in this cosy assumption that you can move from a single market through a single currency to harmonising all your taxes and then having a federal fiscal policy and then effectively having a federal State. ~ Gordon Brown
Fiscal Policy quotes by Gordon Brown
Monetary policy has less room to maneuver when interest rates are close to zero, while expansionary fiscal policy is likely both more effective and less costly in terms of increased debt burden when interest rates are pinned at low levels. ~ Ben Bernanke
Fiscal Policy quotes by Ben Bernanke
Taxation of earnings from labor is on a par with forced labor. Seizing the results of someone's labor is equivalent to seizing hours from him and directing him to carry on various activities. ~ Robert Nozick
Fiscal Policy quotes by Robert Nozick

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefit from the public treasury, with the result that democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy, always to be followed by a dictatorship, and then a monarchy. ~ Alexander Fraser Tytler
Fiscal Policy quotes by Alexander Fraser Tytler
Developing protectionism regarding trade and our reluctance to place fiscal policy on a more sustainable path are threatening what may well be our most valued policy asset: the increased flexibility of our economy, which has fostered our extraordinary resilience to shocks. ~ Alan Greenspan
Fiscal Policy quotes by Alan Greenspan
And it's one reason why I don't go to a lot of movies - they're more and more dominated by corporate values and fiscal concerns as opposed to cinematic concerns. ~ Jeffrey Wright
Fiscal Policy quotes by Jeffrey Wright
Will I criticize Hillary Clinton on her position of TPP, or the lack of position? Will I criticize her on her views of Wall Street? Will I criticize her on foreign policy? That's what democracy is about, but taking cheap shots at people, making it personal, I don't think that's what politics should be about. ~ Bernie Sanders
Fiscal Policy quotes by Bernie Sanders
Obama's entire foreign policy was predicated on the notion that by existing, he would bridge all gaps and bury all hatchets. Instead, the Muslim world burns his picture even as he tells them he respects their radicalism. It turns out that diversity is a one-way street for the devotees of global Islam. ~ Ben Shapiro
Fiscal Policy quotes by Ben Shapiro
tenure at Treasury was not as successful as his career at Alcoa. Almost immediately after taking office he began focusing on a couple of key issues, including worker safety, job creation, executive accountability, and fighting African poverty, among other initiatives. However, O'Neill's politics did not line up with those of President Bush, and he launched an internal fight opposing Bush's proposed tax cuts. He was asked to resign at the end of 2002. "What I thought was the right thing for economic policy was the opposite of what the White House wanted," O'Neill told me. "That's not good for a treasury secretary, so I got fired. ~ Charles Duhigg
Fiscal Policy quotes by Charles Duhigg

WikiLeaks combines several of my prior interests in technology, policy questions, and journalism. ~ Charles Ferguson
Fiscal Policy quotes by Charles Ferguson
Green policy is about triggering a shift to a cleaner way of doing things. To be effective, it needs to incentivise the right behaviour, for example through tax breaks, and that needs to be paid for by disincentives on polluting behaviour. ~ Zac Goldsmith
Fiscal Policy quotes by Zac Goldsmith
America is a unique place. The value part of American foreign policy is something I think is very laudable, but it is uniquely American. And it is part of what makes America special. ~ Michael Oren
Fiscal Policy quotes by Michael Oren
So when the only domestic social policy is tax cuts that mostly benefit the wealthiest Americans, we say, 'Where is faith being put into action here?' ~ Jim Wallis
Fiscal Policy quotes by Jim Wallis
President Barack Obama and his family. (I was respectful, I believe, but I told him I did not like his drone strikes on Pakistan, that when they kill one bad person, innocent people are killed, too, and terrorism spreads more. I also told him that if America spent less money on weapons and war and more on education, the world would be a better place. If God has given you a voice, I decided, you must use it even if it is to disagree with the president of the United States.) ~ Malala Yousafzai
Fiscal Policy quotes by Malala Yousafzai
Europeans have always thought of U.S. presidents as either naive, as they did with Jimmy Carter, or as cowboys, as they did with Lyndon Johnson, and held them in contempt in either case. ~ George Friedman
Fiscal Policy quotes by George Friedman
Well, you have to remember that until 1948, when Hubert Humphrey and others forced the Democratic Party to adopt a new policy on civil rights, the Democratic Party was the party of the old solid South. All of the racists, all of the Cottonhead Smith types and so on were Democrats, allies of Franklin Roosevelt - because of their seniority - of all the major committees of the Congress. ~ William A. Rusher
Fiscal Policy quotes by William A. Rusher
Daily exercise is an insurance policy against future illness. The best Leaders Without Titles are the fittest. ~ Robin Sharma
Fiscal Policy quotes by Robin Sharma
Insofar as Americans have a popular image of postal workers, it has become increasingly squalid. But this didn't just happen. It is the result of intentional policy choices. Since the 1980s, legislators have led the way in systematically defunding the post office and encouraging private alternatives as part of an ongoing campaign to convince Americans that government doesn't really work. ~ David Graeber
Fiscal Policy quotes by David Graeber
I believe that when it comes to major foreign policy issues, many prefer to have black people seen and not heard. ~ Cynthia McKinney
Fiscal Policy quotes by Cynthia McKinney
We must renew our efforts to keep our communities safe, from the dangers of terrorists from foreign lands and from common criminals here at home. Let no criminal believe that tough fiscal times will yield an open cell door and a ticket to freedom. ~ Bill Owens
Fiscal Policy quotes by Bill Owens
My father, for his part, was not a man to begrudge anyone a divergent opinion; he'd have been fine if I had written some articles disagreeing with his policies, or even given interviews, as long as I was respectful and civil. ~ Patti Davis
Fiscal Policy quotes by Patti Davis

Reasonable, even intelligent people can, and frequently do, disagree on how best to achieve peace in the Middle East, but, peace must be the goal of our foreign policy tools, whether they be by the stick or by the carrot. ~ Nick Rahall
Fiscal Policy quotes by Nick Rahall
Homer, in the second book of the Iliad says with fine enthusiasm, "Give me masturbation or give me death." Caesar, in his Commentaries, says, "To the lonely it is company; to the forsaken it is a friend; to the aged and to the impotent it is a benefactor. They that are penniless are yet rich, in that they still have this majestic diversion." In another place this experienced observer has said, "There are times when I prefer it to sodomy." Robinson Crusoe says, "I cannot describe what I owe to this gentle art." Queen Elizabeth said, "It is the bulwark of virginity." Cetewayo, the Zulu hero, remarked, "A jerk in the hand is worth two in the bush." The immortal Franklin has said, "Masturbation is the best policy." Michelangelo and all of the other old masters--"old masters," I will remark, is an abbreviation, a contraction--have used similar language. Michelangelo said to Pope Julius II, "Self-negation is noble, self-culture beneficent, self-possession is manly, but to the truly great and inspiring soul they are poor and tame compared with self-abuse." Mr. Brown, here, in one of his latest and most graceful poems, refers to it in an eloquent line which is destined to live to the end of time--"None knows it but to love it; none name it but to praise. ~ Mark Twain
Fiscal Policy quotes by Mark Twain

Fiscal Policy quotes by Polly Toynbee
Nothing is more favorable to the rise of politeness and learning, than a number of neighboring and independent states, connected together by commerce and policy. ~ David Hume
Fiscal Policy quotes by David Hume
The American people are screaming at the top of their lungs to Washington, 'Stop! Stop the spending, stop the job-killing policies.' And yet, Democrats in Washington refuse to listen to the American people. ~ John Boehner
Fiscal Policy quotes by John Boehner
The neoconservatives are a small circle, and they're all sort of holding hands as they develop their policy, and outsiders aren't allowed. If you agree with the guys on the inside, you're a genius. If you disagree, you're a traitor, a pariah, you're an apostate, and you're not allowed in. ~ Seymour Hersh
Fiscal Policy quotes by Seymour Hersh

Fiscal Policy quotes by Jeroen Van Der Veer
In my view, we need a massive federal jobs program which puts millions of our people back to work. We must end our disastrous trade policies. We need to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. And we have to fight for pay equity for women. ~ Bernie Sanders
Fiscal Policy quotes by Bernie Sanders
Mr Hitchens's policy has succeeded in making 10,000 new Bin Ladens. ~ George Galloway
Fiscal Policy quotes by George Galloway
If you're an adrenaline junkie, I understand why you'd find that exciting. But I'm not, and I don't.

To me, the only good reason to take a risk is that there's a decent possibility of a reward that outweighs the hazard. Exploring the edge of the universe and pushing the boundaries of human knowledge and capability strike me as pretty significant rewards, so I accept the risks of being an astronaut, but with an abundance of caution: I want to understand them, manage them and reduce them as much as possible.

It's almost comical that astronauts are stereotyped as daredevils and cowboys. As a rule, we're highly methodical and detail-oriented. Our passion isn't for thrills but for the grindstone, and pressing our noses to it. We have to: we're responsible for equipment that has cost taxpayers many millions of dollars, and the best insurance policy we have on our lives is our own dedication to training. Studying, simulating, practicing until responses become automatic - astronauts don't do all this only to fulfill NASA's requirements. Training is something we do to reduce the odds that we'll die. ~ Chris Hadfield
