I grew up in a world that was clannish - old Tasmanian-Irish families with big extended families. ~ Richard Flanagan
Extended Families quotes by Richard Flanagan
Sixty percent of our immigrants are admitted merely because they have relatives here. Many of these people are not immediate relative, but are part of extended families. The nepotistic U.S. policy lets in relatives then lets in the relatives' relatives, and so on, creating an endless and ever growing chain of new immigrants. ~ Ronald Reagan
Extended Families quotes by Ronald Reagan
More than anything, we have lost the cultural customs and traditions that bring extended families together, linking adults and children in caring relationships, that give the adult friends of parents a place in their children's lives. It is the role of culture to cultivate connections between the dependent and the dependable and to prevent attachment voids from occurring. Among the many reasons that culture is failing us, two bear mentioning. The first is the jarringly rapid rate of change in twentieth-century industrial societies. It requires time to develop customs and traditions that serve attachment needs, hundreds of years to create a working culture that serves a particular social and geographical environment. Our society has been changing much too rapidly for culture to evolve accordingly.

There is now more change in a decade than previously in a century. When circumstances change more quickly than our culture can adapt to, customs and traditions disintegrate. It is not surprising that today's culture is failing its traditional function of supporting adult-child attachments. Part of the rapid change has been the electronic transmission of culture, allowing commercially blended and packaged culture to be broadcast into our homes and into the very minds of our children. Instant culture has replaced what used to be passed down through custom and tradition and from one generation to another.

"Almost every day I find myself fighting the bubble-gum cul ~ Gabor Mate
Extended Families quotes by Gabor Mate
My Open Hearts Family celebrates not only the traditional family but also extended families that we create from the people we open our hearts to as we journey through life. ~ Jane Seymour
Extended Families quotes by Jane Seymour
There was no singles problem until singles got so single-minded that they stopped wasting time with anyone ineligible. Before that, it was understood that one of society's main tasks was matchmaking. People with lifelong friendships and ties to local nonprofessional organizations did not have to fear that isolation would accompany retirement, old age, or losing a spouse. Overburdened householders could count on the assistance not only of their own extended families, but of the American tradition of neighborliness. ~ Judith Martin
Extended Families quotes by Judith Martin
Communism is what Karl Marx hoped could be an economic scheme for making industrialized nations take as good care of people, and especially of children and the old and disabled, as tribes and extended families used to do, before they were dispersed by the Industrial Revolution. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Extended Families quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
Pursuing employment or climatic relief, we live in voluntary exile from our extended families and our longer past, but in an involuntary exile from ourselves and our own past. ~ John Thorn
Extended Families quotes by John Thorn
Families share relationships based not only blood, but also the unique affiliation of a terribly long cord when measured in comparison with any other undertaking in a person's life, from cradle to the grave if you will. These intimate associations create a bond of love, affection, goodwill, and joy that we seek to duplicate when we marry and begin creating our extended families. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Extended Families quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
It's peaceful to think about the family as a group. I totally believe in extended families. ~ Agnes Varda
Extended Families quotes by Agnes Varda
But anyway, it's obvious through human experience that extended families and tribes are terribly important. We can do without an extended family as human beings about as easily as we can do without vitamins or essential minerals. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Extended Families quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
Equal protection under the law is not a hard principle to convince Americans of. The difficulty comes in persuading them that it has been violated in particular cases, and of the need to redress the wrong. Prejudice and indifference run deep. Education, social reform, and political action can persuade some. But most people will not feel the sufferings of others unless they feel, even in an abstract way, that 'it could have been me or someone close to me'. Consider the astonishingly rapid transformation of American attitudes toward homosexuality and even gay marriage over the past decades. Gay activism brought these issues to public attention but attitudes were changed during tearful conversations over dinner tables across American when children came out to their parents (and, sometimes, parents came out to their children). Once parents began to accept their children, extended families did too, and today same-sex marriages are celebrated across the country with all the pomp and joy and absurd overspending of traditional American marriages. Race is a wholly different matter. Given the segregation in American society white families have little chance of seeing and therefore understanding the lives of black Americans. I am not black male motorist and never will be. All the more reason, then, that I need some way to identify with one if I am going to be affected by his experience. And citizenship is the only thing I know we share. The more differences between us are emphasized, th ~ Mark Lilla
Extended Families quotes by Mark Lilla
For example, compared with hunter-gatherers, citizens of modern industrialized states enjoy better medical care, lower risk of death by homicide, and a longer life span, but receive much less social support from friendships and extended families. My motive for investigating these geographic differences in human societies is not to celebrate one type of society over another but simply to understand what happened in history. ~ Jared Diamond
Extended Families quotes by Jared Diamond
Boys get unfairly labeled as morally defective, hyperactive, undisciplined, or 'problem children,' when quite often the problem is not with the boys but with the families, extended families, or social environments, which do not understand their specific needs as human beings and as boys ~ Michael Gurian
Extended Families quotes by Michael Gurian
Weddings matter. Not just because they mark a significant turning point in a couple's lives, which they do. Weddings also serve as rare reunions for extended families and long-lost friends. They are a continuation of sacred rights and centuries-old traditions. And, most important, they are opportunities for joy. We don't have enough of those in this harried, workaholic society-whole days set aside just to eat and drink and dance and be together. This is the real gift if the wedding, and it's given both to the couple and to everyone lucky enough to be present at their union. ~ Ellen McCarthy
Extended Families quotes by Ellen McCarthy
Friends are the twenty-first-century version of extended families. ~ Cynthia Heimel
Extended Families quotes by Cynthia Heimel
Calling a nuclear group with a mom and a pop and their kids a family is like calling a field of bluestem a prairie. It's the rich diversity of grasses and forbs that makes a prairie work, just as it's the rich diversity of parents and children, grandparents and cousins, aunts and uncles providing nourishment and support that makes a family work. ~ Faith A. Colburn
Extended Families quotes by Faith A. Colburn
One thing I found out was that we need extended families. We need gangs. And, of course, if they're tribes and clans and so forth have been dispersed by the industrial revolution by people looking for work wherever they can find it. And a nuclear family, a man, a woman and kids and a dog and cat is no survival scheme at all. Horribly vulnerable. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Extended Families quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
I think if you talk to anybody who would like to have had children ... I mean, you look at families all the time and you see there is something there that you don't have. ~ Theresa May
Extended Families quotes by Theresa May
The primary school I attended in Shanghai was a very liberal one, established by scholars who had return from an education in France. The children of leading families were enrolled there, including the son of a well-known man believed to be a top gangster of the underworld! ~ Charles K. Kao
Extended Families quotes by Charles K. Kao
Another example is the modern political order. Ever since the French Revolution, people throughout the world have gradually come to see both equality and individual freedom as fundamental values. Yet the two values contradict each other. Equality can be ensured only by curtailing the freedoms of those who are better off. Guaranteeing that every individual will be free to do as he wishes inevitably short-changes equality. The entire political history of the world since 1789 can be seen as a series of attempts to reconcile this contradiction. Anyone who has read a novel by Charles Dickens knows that the liberal regimes of nineteenth-century Europe gave priority to individual freedom even if it meant throwing insolvent poor families in prison and giving orphans little choice but to join schools for pickpockets. Anyone who has read a novel by Alexander Solzhenitsyn knows how Communism's egalitarian ideal produced brutal tyrannies that tried to control every aspect of daily life. ~ Yuval Noah Harari
Extended Families quotes by Yuval Noah Harari
What else do we all want, each one of us, except to love and be loved, in our families, in our work, in all our relationships? ~ Dorothy Day
Extended Families quotes by Dorothy Day
From what Ayyan had heard of the battles of the Brahmins, it would be bloodless but brutal. They would fight like demons armed with nothing more than deceit and ideals - another form of deceit among men from good families. ~ Manu Joseph
Extended Families quotes by Manu Joseph
I wonder which of the megaton bombs Jesus, our
President's personal savior, would have personally
dropped on the sleeping families of Baghdad? ~ Meryl Streep
Extended Families quotes by Meryl Streep
We were the daughters of the post-World War II American dream, the daughters of those idealized fifties sitcom families in which father knew best and mother knew her place and a kind of disappointment, and tense, unspoken sexuality rattled around like ice cubes in their nightly cocktails. ~ Anne Taylor Fleming
Extended Families quotes by Anne Taylor Fleming
In communities, at work, but particularly in families, people are put together in something like a three-legged race. God means us to cross the finish line together, and all the other people tied together with us play some part in our progress. They are oftentimes to rouse our stubborn sins to the surface, where we can deal with them and overcome them. Bundled together in families, a giant seven or nine or fifteen legged pack, we seem to make very poor progress indeed and fall to the ground in bickering heaps with some regularity. But God has put us together - has appointed each person in your bundle specifically for you, and you for them. And so, 'little children, let us love one another' with might and main, and keep hopping together toward the finish line. ~ Frederica Mathewes-Green
Extended Families quotes by Frederica Mathewes-Green
Families who lovingly accept the difficult trial of a child with special needs are greatly to be admired. They render the Church and society an invaluable witness of faithfulness to the gift of life. In these situations, the family can discover, together with the Christian community, new approaches, new ways of acting, a different way of understanding and identifying with others, by welcoming and caring for the mystery of the frailty of human life. People with disabilities are a gift for the family and an opportunity to grow in love, mutual aid and unity ... If the family, in the light of the faith, accepts the presence of persons with special needs, they will be able to recognize and ensure the quality and value of every human life, with its proper needs, rights and opportunities. ~ Pope Francis
Extended Families quotes by Pope Francis
The capacity for friendship is God's way of apologizing for our families. ~ Jay McInerney
Extended Families quotes by Jay McInerney
Most families have increased the speed of their lives and the number of their activities gradually--even unconsciously--over time. They realize that there are costs to a consistently fast-paced, hectic schedule, but they've adjusted. And looking around, there always seems to be another family that does everything you do, and more, managing to squeeze in skiing, or Space Camp, or French horn lessons on top of everything else. How do they do it?
They do it by never asking 'Why?' Why do our kids need to be busy all of the time? Why does our son, age twelve, need to explore the possibility of space travel? Why do we feel we must offer everything? Why must it all happen now? Why does tomorrow always seem a bit late? Why would we rather squeeze more things into our schedules than to see what happens over time? What happens when we stop, when we have free time? ~ Kim John Payne
Extended Families quotes by Kim John Payne
Before we made films about gangsters, everything was about the royal families. They contain so much drama. ~ Mads Mikkelsen
Extended Families quotes by Mads Mikkelsen
He lifted his head and looked into her eyes as he tugged at her shirt, pulling it from beneath her, pulling it over her head until she lay beneath him in her bra, and an insubstantial one at that. His nostrils flared as he took in the sight of her in the dim light, and he trailed his fingertips over the slope of her breast to touch her extended nipple. She held her breath in anticipation as he paused, then rolled it between his fingers. When he bent his head, she closed her eyes, and let the heat of his mouth become the focal point of her world. ~ M.J. Fredrick
Extended Families quotes by M.J. Fredrick
At moments, the weight of it all became palpable. It was in the air, the stress and misery. Normally, you breathed it in, without noticing it. But some days, like a humid muggy day, it had a suffocating weight of its own. Some days, this is how it felt when I was in the hospital: trapped in an endless jungle summer, wet with sweat, the rain of tears of the families of the dying pouring down. ~ Paul Kalanithi
Extended Families quotes by Paul Kalanithi
The thing about the Air Force or any branch of the military is that all of us were plucked away from our homes and our comfort zones and our families. So there was a solidarity in the military, a brotherhood. ~ Jon Huertas
Extended Families quotes by Jon Huertas
But she couldn't formulate the sentence in Chinese. Her knowledge of the language only extended to the daily necessities and small affections. ~ Jade Chang
Extended Families quotes by Jade Chang
Our time was most delightfully spent, in mutual Protestations of Freindship, and in vows of unalterable Love, in which we were secure from being interrupted, by intruding and disagreeable Visistors, as Augustus and Sophia had on their first Entrance in the Neighbourhood, taken due care to inform the surrounding Families, that as their happiness centered wholly in themselves, they wished for no other society. ~ Jane Austen
Extended Families quotes by Jane Austen
I had a very comfortable life, but there were people who spent their life in prison, whose families were destroyed. ~ Peter Sis
Extended Families quotes by Peter Sis
Seated at the table, high in her firmament of gin, she looked critically at her brother and his wife, remembering some real or imagined injustice of her youth, for with any proximity the constellations of some families generate among themselves an asperity that nothing can sweeten. ~ John Cheever
Extended Families quotes by John Cheever
If we habitually focus on how to improve things that are already great, can you see how this spirit can transform ourselves, our organizations, families and communities? ~ Tony Robbins
Extended Families quotes by Tony Robbins
Among the believers who show most perfect faith are those who have best disposition and are kindest to their families. ~ Muhammad Ibn Isa At-Tirmidhi
Extended Families quotes by Muhammad Ibn Isa At-Tirmidhi
Cities are for people. A city is where people come to work and raise their families and to spend their money and to walk in the evening. It is not a traffic corridor. ~ John Norquist
Extended Families quotes by John Norquist
The story of the Utah prairie dog is the story of the range of our compassion. If we can extend our idea of community to include the lowliest of creatures, call them 'the untouchables', then we will indeed be closer to a path of peace and tolerance. if we cannot accommodate 'the other', the shadow we will see on our own home ground will be the forecast of our own species' extended winter of the soul. ~ Terry Tempest Williams
Extended Families quotes by Terry Tempest Williams
There are orphanages," he exclaimed to himself, "for children who have lost their parents--oh! why, why, why, are there no harbours of refuge for grown men who have not yet lost them? ~ Samuel Butler
Extended Families quotes by Samuel Butler
Let observation with extended observation observe extensively. ~ Alfred Lord Tennyson
Extended Families quotes by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Of course, some families cannot be saved and their children cannot be returned. Yet, even then, their love for each other must be worth something. ~ Andrew Bridge
Extended Families quotes by Andrew Bridge
I still lie awake at night thinking about everything that could have been, that wasn't done to stop 9/11. To the 9/11 families, I said, you deserve better from your entire government. All of us. ~ George Tenet
Extended Families quotes by George Tenet
Kindness is the connection that links us all together and strengthens the bonds within our communities, neighborhoods, and families. ~ Rosalynn Carter
Extended Families quotes by Rosalynn Carter
Increased funding for the Weatherization Assistance Program is a priority for the Bush Administration, and I am pleased that many families in North Carolina will benefit from this increase. ~ Richard Burr
Extended Families quotes by Richard Burr
Everybody who has dealt with China over an extended period of time has come to more or less the same conclusions. There are nuances of differences, but not fundamental differences. I think that President Bush was heading in this direction, and I have no doubt that he will again wind up in this position. But right now he has to be preoccupied with the atrocity committed in New York and Washington. ~ Henry A. Kissinger
Extended Families quotes by Henry A. Kissinger
An average horse can produce only about half a horsepower for any extended period. ~ David E. Nye
Extended Families quotes by David E. Nye
I promise that if you will keep your journals and records, they will indeed be a source of great inspiration to your families, to your children, your grandchildren, and others, on through the generations. Each of us is important to those who are near and dear to us and as our posterity reads of our life's experiences, they, too, will come to know and love us. And in that glorious day when our families are together in the eternities, we will already be acquainted. ~ Spencer W. Kimball
Extended Families quotes by Spencer W. Kimball
The rich people are doing well but regular people suffer. We'll all be better off when we realize that we're part of one big family. ~ CeCe Winans
Extended Families quotes by CeCe Winans
She believed that people born to low caste families were meant to suffer. That was their karma. She had learnt that those who indulge in sinful activities in their previous birth, especially those who humiliated others, would be reborn to low caste families. She firmly believed also that one has to suffer until the sin was paid for through suffering and good deeds. ~ Swarnakanthi Rajapakse
