Well, maybe I'm not so emotionally dysfunctional after all. ~ Ian Kelsey
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Ian Kelsey
Instead of using therapy to try and reduce their fear and anger, people now celebrated these destructive emotions, labeling themselves as politically active rather than emotionally dysfunctional. ~ Gudjon Bergmann
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Gudjon Bergmann
In one of her most influential studies, she and her team tracked the emotional experiences of nearly two hundred people over years of their lives. The subjects spanned a broad range of backgrounds and ages. (They were from eighteen to ninety-four years old when they entered the study.) At the beginning of the study and then every five years, the subjects were given a beeper to carry around twenty-four hours a day for one week. They were randomly paged thirty-five times over the course of that week and asked to choose from a list all the emotions they were experiencing at that exact moment.
If Maslow's hierarchy was right, then the narrowing of life runs against people's greatest sources of fulfillment and you would expect people to grow unhappier as they age. But Carstensen's research found exactly the opposite. The results were unequivocal. Far from growing unhappier, people reported more positive emotions as they aged. They became less prone to anxiety, depression, and anger. They experienced trials, to be sure, and more moments of poignancy - that is, of positive and negative emotion mixed together. But overall, they found living to be a more emotionally satisfying and stable experience as time passed, even as old age narrowed the lives they led.
The findings raised a further question. If we shift as we age toward appreciating everyday pleasures and relationships rather than toward achieving, having, and getting, and if we find this more fulfilling, then why do w ~ Atul Gawande
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Atul Gawande
If you perform asanas regularly, you will feel more flexible physically and emotionally. Flexibility is the essential difference between the vitality of youth and the lassitude of old age. Here is a yogic expression that we find inspiring: "Infinite flexibility is the secret to immortality. ~ Deepak Chopra
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Deepak Chopra
It's always hard to be private in public, which is what acting is because you have to do thing really emotionally naked. ~ Viola Davis
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Viola Davis
Dogs are masters of creating emotionally safe space just by being themselves. ... it is as if something deep within our souls resonates with their energy, their unwavering unconditional love and unbridled joy to be in our presence, their undivided loyalty, and complete trust in us. Dogs make us feel special, and teach us by example to relish simple pleasures and live totally in the moment. They teach us there is only now and only who you are, who you are with, and what you are doing right then–and
what could be better than to sniff the wind and be in the company of those you love? ~ Val Silver
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Val Silver
My head said no and my vagina said yes and my heart said I DON'T KNOW!! I'M EMOTIONALLY INHIBTED! LEAVE ME ALONE!!! ~ Penny Reid
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Penny Reid
In minor crises, the preacher can extract himself emotionally and allow others to express grief and fear and doubt while he remains strong. ~ James A. Forbes
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by James A. Forbes
Loss of social standing is an ever-present threat for individuals whose social acceptance is based on behavioral traits rather than unconditional human value. ~ Melissa V. Harris-Perry
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Melissa V. Harris-Perry
And could you, from a place of love, actually stand up and, use force, to give someone back, the suffering, they were trying to put on you? Would I do it? Maybe it would even be, an act of fierce compassion, as Enso Roshi sometimes talked about, to not take it any more. To not cow down, anymore. To let my father know, the tyrant, the aggressor, that if he hits me, I'm going to hit back, and hard. ~ T. Scott McLeod
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by T. Scott McLeod
A. I want my readers to remember a book of mine after they've turned the last page, partly so they will want to read more from me, but also because I want them to feel that reading it was well worth their time. I guess I want a book that I write to be more than entertainment that is enjoyable for the moment but forgettable as the months go by. I don't make a conscious effort to craft quotable prose when I write, but I do endeavor to pose questions and suggest insights that speak across the pages into a reader's life. For me, that translates into a good reason for having read the book. I always remember a book more fully and longer if I've been so emotionally tugged that I find myself highlighting phrases I don't want to forget. And I usually can't wait for that author's next book! Khaled Hosseini's books are always like that for me. Q. ~ Susan Meissner
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Susan Meissner
As a parent who raised his children in dysfunction, I know the parental wounds my children received were not intentional; often they were my best expression of love, sometimes coming out sideways, not as I intended. ~ David W. Earle
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by David W. Earle
Everything was in stark and dreadful contrast with the trivial crises and counterfeit emotions of Hollywood, and I returned to England deeply moved and emotionally worn out. ~ C.S. Forester
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by C.S. Forester
I have fallen for someone who's so emotionally shut down, I will only get hurt- deep down I know this- someone who by his own admission is completely fucked up. ~ E.L. James
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by E.L. James
A good teacher who can take the zero pay and help kids develop physically, emotionally, socially, is literally an angel. ~ Eva Amurri
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Eva Amurri
I was always longing to do, emotionally and physically, what my male counterparts always got to do. I just felt envious, every time I saw a movie that I was in awe of, and it was usually a male lead. And those kinds of roles weren't available. They just weren't being written. ~ Sandra Bullock
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Sandra Bullock
To call either of us virgins would be ridiculous, yet emotionally that was just what we were. Fumbling in the dark and too eager, completely out of our depths and self-conscious, trying to impress and missing all the subtle nuances. ~ Sylvia Day
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Sylvia Day
Did you tell him you love him? My mom says men have trouble with that sometimes because they're emotionally immature. ~ Susan Mallery
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Susan Mallery
To be loved by someone is to realize how much they share the same needs that lie at the heart of our own attraction to them. Albert Camus suggested that we fall in love with people because, from the outside, they look so whole, physically whole and emotionally 'together' - when subjectively we feel dispersed and confused. We would not love if there were no lack within us, but we are offended by the discovery of a similar lack in the other. Expecting to find the answer, we find only the duplicate of our own problem. ~ Alain De Botton
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Alain De Botton
And sociopaths are noted especially for their shallowness of emotion, the hollow and transient nature of any affectionate feelings they may claim to have, a certain breathtaking callousness. They have no trace of empathy and no genuine interest in bonding emotionally with a mate. Once the surface charm is scraped off, their marriages are loveless, one-sided, and almost always short-term. If a marriage partner has any value to the sociopath, it is because the partner is viewed as a possession, one that the sociopath may feel angry to lose, but never sad or accountable. ~ Martha Stout
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Martha Stout
High School. Society's bright idea to put all their aggressive, naive youth into one environment to torment and emotionally scar each other for life. ~ Chris Colfer
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Chris Colfer
When I learned about the gray existing between the black and white of absolute terms, I began to experience more peace. The more I expanded my gray areas (more than 50 shades), the more peace I experienced in my life. ~ David W. Earle
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by David W. Earle
You and I were made for connection, to be emotionally attached to others. It's a well-known fact that physical touch is crucial for us as human beings, not just for emotional health but for our very survival. Studies show that the elderly die sooner if they don't have physical touch. Babies are more likely to be diagnosed with "failure to thrive" if they're not touched. One ~ Kay Warren
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Kay Warren
I think part of what makes someone a great actor is being able to walk into a situation emotionally available and open, and have all your guards down, and just have that level of trust and security in yourself to know that you could walk out on that limb with someone else and be safe. ~ Katie Aselton
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Katie Aselton
In pain and loss, we can find either meaning, or hopelessness. The choice is ours.
How we see things, how we interpret them, how we emotionally react;
these call more of the same into our lives.
We build a world for ourselves out of what we believe.
And how we choose to respond.
Whether we let it take us under,
or rise to meet it.
- From "The Soul Hides in Shadows", a novel by Edward Fahey ~ Edward Fahey
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Edward Fahey
We're going to change. We're going to throw out what's worse in us
and keep what's best. But come hell or high water, we three will stick
together, all for one, one for all. We're going to grow, Cathy,
physically, mentally, and emotionally. Not only that, we're going to
reach the goals we've set for ourselves. I'll be the best damned
doctor the world's ever known and you will make Pavlova seem like an
awkward country girl. ~ V.C. Andrews
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by V.C. Andrews
Isms' are described as transference of addictive patterns of dysfunctional behaviour, passed down from generation to generation. For instance, if a mother was an alcoholic who never made it into recovery, her behaviour would leave a mark on her children, husband, etc. Unless her adult children join some sort of recovery programme and adopt the mindfulness practice, they will have very similar behaviour traits to their mother but minus the alcohol abuse. There is a strong possibility that they will become codependent and form relationships with other codependents or alcoholics. ~ Christopher Dines
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Christopher Dines
It's so exhausting, so mentally and emotionally draining when you care about a drug addict and they never miss an opportunity to disappoint, manipulate or hurt you. ~ Oliver Markus Malloy
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Oliver Markus Malloy
A lot of people think I'm that guy in 'Betsy's Wedding', but I'm not. What it is for me is that, on some level, I connect with the character emotionally. ~ Anthony LaPaglia
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Anthony LaPaglia
I mean if you two were to make love, that would be gay. Two men touching each other physically and emotionally ... erotically caressing each other ... on the hood of a car ... or the back of a movie theater ... ~ Kristen Schaal
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Kristen Schaal
I've always loved writing emotionally rich, character-driven novels that explore the way people fall in love and deal with life's triumphs and tragedies. I enjoy writing the contemporary and historical books equally, though perhaps 'enjoy' is the wrong word. ~ Susan Wiggs
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Susan Wiggs
Any time an elected official in the world we're in today that appears so dysfunctional challenges a core constituency not of their opponent but of their own political base, I think we should pause and give them credit. ~ Jeb Bush
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Jeb Bush
Love is exactly the word I'd use...It's the only thing that comes close to describing this hell with you. ~ Meg Collett
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Meg Collett
I noticed with older songs that I perform that I'm coming from a different place with them now ... it mutates the vibe and even the meaning of the same words when you have a different spirit, if the person singing is different. I like that, to be able to sing an emotionally wrought song from a more centered place, or to sing an eager, youthful song from a more experienced place. It kind of colors the songs differently, and it keeps them fresh. ~ Ani DiFranco
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Ani DiFranco
These days, most Americans who are unashamedly prejudiced know better than to say so, except to a secure, like-minded audience, given that many people live and work in environments where they can be slapped on the wrist, publicly humiliated, or sacked for saying anything that smacks of an "ism." However, just as it takes mental effort to maintain a prejudice despite conflicting information, it takes mental effort to suppress those negative feelings. Social psychologists Chris Crandall and Amy Eshelman, reviewing the huge research literature on prejudice, found that whenever people are emotionally depleted - when they are sleepy, frustrated, angry, anxious, drunk, or stressed - they become more willing to express their real prejudices toward another group. ~ Anonymous
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Anonymous
Elizabeth is smart, ruthless, and emotionally damaged ... [i]f Elizabeth's brain was a person, it would have scars, tattoos, and be missing one eye. ~ Max Barry
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Max Barry
And being a husband made me helpless, because I had somebody to protect (somebody a little high-strung, who had a tough time emotionally with things like the lights going out indefinitely). ~ Rob Sheffield
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Rob Sheffield
One feels, in this possessive relationship, enriched, creative, and active; one feels one's own little flame of being is increased by another and so in order not to lose this source of completeness one fears the loss of the other, and so possessive fears come into being with all their resulting problems. Thus in this relationship of psychological dependence, there must always be conscious or unconscious fear, suspicion, which often lies hidden in pleasant-sounding words..

Though one is dependent on another, there is yet the desire to be inviolate, to be whole. The complex problem in relationship is how to love without dependence, without friction and conflict; how to conquer the desire to isolate oneself, to withdraw from the cause of conflict. If we depend for our happiness on another, on society, or on environment, they become essential to us; we cling to them and any alteration of these we violently oppose because we depend upon them for our psychological security and comfort. Though, intellectually, we may perceive that life is a continual process of flux, mutation, necessitating constant change, yet emotionally or sentimentally we cling to the established and comforting values; hence there is a constant battle between change and the desire for permanency. Is it possible to put an end to this conflict? ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Jiddu Krishnamurti
Encouraging girls to explore sexuality within mutually caring, emotionally connected relationships is one thing; insisting on it is another. ~ Peggy Orenstein
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Peggy Orenstein
Films today show only a dream world and have lost touch with the way people really are ... In this country, people die at 21. They die emotionally at 21, maybe younger ... My responsibility as an artist is to help people get past 21 ... The films are a roadmap through emotional and intellectual terrain that provides a solution on how to save pain. ~ John Cassavetes
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by John Cassavetes
You must practice seeing yourself with a little distance, cultivating the ability to get out of your own head. Detachment is a sort of natural ego antidote. It's easy to be emotionally invested and infatuated with your own work. Any and every narcissist can do that. What is rare is not rawtalent, skill, or even confidence, but humility, diligence, and self-awareness. ~ Ryan Holiday
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Ryan Holiday
People tend to become more emotionally intelligent as they age and mature. ~ Daniel Goleman
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Daniel Goleman
The wu in wuxia means both "to cut" and "to stop." It also refers to the weapon - usually a sword - carried by the assassin, the hero of the story. The genre became very popular during the Song Dynasty [960–1279]. These stories often depicted a soldier in revolt, usually against a corrupt political leader. In order to stop corruption and the killing of innocent people, the hero must become an assassin. So wuxia stories are concerned with the premise of ending violence with violence. Although their actions are motivated by political reasons, the hero's journey is epic and transformative - physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In the Tang Dynasty, a prominent poet named Li Bai wrote some verses about an assassin. This is the earliest example I know of wuxia literature. Gradually, the genre gave shape to ideas and stories that had been percolating in historical and mythological spheres. Although these stories were often inspired by real events of the past, to me they feel very contemporary and relevant.

It's one of the oldest genres in Chinese literature, and there are countless wuxia novels today. I began to immerse myself in these novels when I was in elementary school, and they quickly became my favorite things to read. I started with newer books and worked my way back to the earliest writing from the Tang Dynasty. ~ Hou Hsiao-hsien
Emotionally Dysfunctional quotes by Hou Hsiao-hsien
Trust is weird," my mother said. "People give it too easily, most of the time. Because somebody is attractive, they expect him to be good or honest. Or like pushy salesmen - somebody who carefully makes you feel like you're emotionally obligated to trust them. Like you're the rude one if you don't. Trust is really something that needs to be earned. Hard earned. If somebody every says, 'Don't you trust me?' Just say, "No, as a matter of fact. ~ Kristen D. Randle
