The one thing emphasized in any creative writing course is 'write what you know,' and that automatically drives a wooden stake through the heart of imagination. If they really understood the mysterious process of creating fiction, they would say, 'You can write about anything you can imagine.' ~ Tom Robbins
Creative Writing quotes by Tom Robbins
Creative writing and shooting are muscles that atrophy. But when you work them, you become a self-generator who can branch out. ~ Eli Roth
Creative Writing quotes by Eli Roth
Giving these students, teenagers, any form of power over the use of their own words, allowing them to turn everyday raw material into some form of beauty, is a gift beyond measure. ~ Gloria Ng
Creative Writing quotes by Gloria Ng
I kind of came from the Townes Van Zandt school of throwing yourself off a cliff and then that's what you write about, and that rule number one of creative writing is you have to have conflict. But if you write about yourself mostly, then if you don't have conflict, then you create it. And the older I get, the more I realize that that's not a very smart way to do this. Not to say I'm the most self destructive person on earth, but it's easy to do. ~ John Fullbright
Creative Writing quotes by John Fullbright
IN MY SO-CALLED CAREER, I'VE OFTEN WRITTEN THINGS THAT I VAINLY THOUGHT WERE INCREDIBLY GOOD AND THAT I ENJOYED READING SO MUCH I FIGURED EVERYBODY ELSE WOULD ENJOY THEM TOO, AND MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, I HAVE BEEN TOTALLY WRONG … I never stopped being surprised that so many critics were uninterested in them, or dismissive, or even hostile. often they tried to point out the allegorical failures of the pieces, even when they were clearly as non-allegorical as they could get. and more than a couple of times, I received emails from somebody asking me what happened, why didn't I write the stories I used to write, and why did I get into all this 'animal rights' nonsense? I guess they thought I was picketing outside university research facilities. I consider all my stories and novels to be animal stories … I never understood why people took MFA degrees, or creative writing courses, and I avoided taking them myself for many years … honestly, I can't imagine why anybody would want to go through the pain and agony of having his work critiqued in an open forum - I tell my creative writing students this all the time, they are all far braver than I am! ~ Scott Bradfield
Creative Writing quotes by Scott Bradfield
The road to publishing success is paved with writing. ~ David John Griffin
Creative Writing quotes by David John Griffin
After you have done your work - challenging as it may have been to complete - and released it in the marketplace, be not concerned with sales, reviews, critical acclaim, or anything else of the like... After you've written and published a book, you're now an AUTHOR. And that great honor can NEVER be taken away from you, no matter what. ("My Book Place," 2018) ~ Cat Ellington
Creative Writing quotes by Cat Ellington
The New Groupthink is also practiced in our schools, via an increasingly popular method of instruction called "cooperative" or "small group" learning. In many elementary schools, the traditional rows of seats facing the teacher have been replaced with "pods" of four or more desks pushed together to facilitate countless group learning activities. Even subjects like math and creative writing, which would seem to depend on solo flights of thought, are often taught as group projects. In one fourth-grade classroom I visited, a big sign announced the "Rules for Group Work," including, YOU CAN'T ASK A TEACHER FOR HELP UNLESS EVERYONE IN YOUR GROUP HAS THE SAME QUESTION. ~ Susan Cain
Creative Writing quotes by Susan Cain
Unless you have tested the assumptions in your business model first, outside the building, your business plan is just creative writing. ~ Steve Blank
Creative Writing quotes by Steve Blank
By the early-afternoon hours, if your brain is normal, it's running strictly on inertia and reflex. All you can do during those hours are the things that are exactly like other things you've done in similar situations. Creativity is out of the question. You might argue that you don't notice any difference in your thinking during the afternoon. That's because you're too dazed to notice anything during those hours. I'm sure it's true for me; I believe you could set my eyebrows on fire during the afternoon and I wouldn't notice until sometime the next morning. ~ Scott Adams
Creative Writing quotes by Scott Adams
I took my first creative writing class when I was 24, then went onto to get a graduate degree in poetry. I've sort of never looked back from there. ~ Paula McLain
Creative Writing quotes by Paula McLain
You don't write a novel out of sheer pity any more than you blow a safe out of a vague longing to be rich. A certain ruthlessness and a sense of alienation from society is as essential to creative writing as it is to armed robbery. ~ Nelson Algren
Creative Writing quotes by Nelson Algren
I was a journalism major, and I would take creative writing classes as part of that, but I would also look for opportunities to write stories for some of my other classes. So for my course in Scandinavian history, I asked if I could write historical fiction instead of term papers. Sometimes they'd say yes. ~ George R R Martin
Creative Writing quotes by George R R Martin
I'm not a very good writer, but I'm an excellent rewriter. ~ James A. Michener
Creative Writing quotes by James A. Michener
There is no correct way to write a novel, or rather, there is only one, and that one way is to make it interesting. That is very easily said, but how do you make your writing interesting?
The answer to the question is, that you write interestingly only about the things that genuinely interest you. This is an infallible rule. ~ Ted Hughes
Creative Writing quotes by Ted Hughes
What I am going to propose is that you write a novel.
As you know, the practical advantages of being able to write out your thoughts fluently are very great. For one thing, when you are used to writing them out, they present themselves, one after another. When you are not used to writing them out, they mill around among themselves usually and you see nothing but heads and tails of them when you sit down to get them on paper. I know from my own experience that the first two or three hours of every exam I ever took were spent simply getting my pen warmed up, and by then it was too late. ~ Ted Hughes
Creative Writing quotes by Ted Hughes
Write your story before it dies one single breath at time. Nobody cares if is the truth as long as it really happened. ~ Brenda Sutton Rose
Creative Writing quotes by Brenda Sutton Rose
When I used to teach creative writing, I would tell the students to make their characters want something right away - even if it's only a glass of water. Characters paralyzed by the meaninglessness of modern life still have to drink water from time to time. ~ Stephen Koch
Creative Writing quotes by Stephen Koch
All stories are the sin of their weaver. ~ Miyuki Miyabe
Creative Writing quotes by Miyuki Miyabe
Ignore this advice and some people will discard your work as amateurish. You'll never know because they won't tell you; they're too busy editing books, or teaching their creative writing students or reading better quality books. ~ Tahlia Newland
Creative Writing quotes by Tahlia Newland
But I'm not even human, waking on this soil like a dead life. ~ Yogesh Chandra
Creative Writing quotes by Yogesh Chandra
As a writer, I marinate, speculate, and hibernate. ~ Trisha Sugarek
Creative Writing quotes by Trisha Sugarek
It comes a point in which you don't know if you write books or the books write you ~ Robin Sacredfire
Creative Writing quotes by Robin Sacredfire
We are taken through the pursuit of the American dream, the establishment of the American family, and a smattering of suspense and intrigue. ~ Nikita Allgire
Creative Writing quotes by Nikita Allgire
I'm very interested in the materiality of language. I wonder if, perhaps, this comes from my background in the visual arts. I was a potter for a number of years and earned a BFA in art before going to graduate school for creative writing. ~ Anna Journey
Creative Writing quotes by Anna Journey
There are too many "creative writing" courses and seminars, in which young wirters are constantly being taught to rewrite the previous generation. They should be experimenting on their own. Every writer faces different problems which he must solve for himself. ~ John Dos Passos
Creative Writing quotes by John Dos Passos
Good prose almost always requires both showing and telling, scenes and summary, the two basic components of creative prose. ~ Laurie Alberts
Creative Writing quotes by Laurie Alberts
MFA in a Box is designed to help you to find the courage to put truth into words and to understand that writing is a life-and-death endeavor - but that nothing about a life-and-death endeavor keeps it from being laugh-out-loud funny. ~ John Rember
Creative Writing quotes by John Rember
All the things that live within you find their place, in character and story, once you tap into that other space that is the creative writing space. ~ Francesca Gregorini
Creative Writing quotes by Francesca Gregorini
Writing has laws of perspective, of light and shade just as painting does, or music. If you are born knowing them, fine. If not, learn them. Then rearrange the rules to suit yourself. ~ Truman Capote
Creative Writing quotes by Truman Capote
In many college English courses the words "myth" and "symbol" are given a tremendous charge of significance. You just ain't no good unless you can see a symbol hiding, like a scared gerbil, under every page. And in many creative writing course the little beasts multiply, the place swarms with them. What does this Mean? What does that Symbolize? What is the Underlying Mythos? Kids come lurching out of such courses with a brain full of gerbils. And they sit down and write a lot of empty pomposity, under the impression that that's how Melville did it. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Creative Writing quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
A great writer reveals the truth even when he or she does not wish to. ~ Tom Bissell
Creative Writing quotes by Tom Bissell
Anyone who's taken a lot of creative-writing classes, or taught creative writing, has learned to dread a certain kind of manuscript. It's long, for one thing. It has irritatingly small type; it's grammatically meticulous when it comes to everything but punctuation, for which it has developed its own system of Tolkienic elaboration. ~ Tom Bissell
Creative Writing quotes by Tom Bissell
I got out of college and I went to get my master's in creative writing at San Francisco State. I was working as an actor at the Actor's Workshop, being abused as a intern. ~ Peter Coyote
Creative Writing quotes by Peter Coyote
I remember telling my creative writing teacher that you never want to have a journal, because if you lose it, then someone's going to know all your secrets. And then she stopped using a journal, but I always write everything down ... Anytime I travel, I try and fill up notepads. ~ Garrett Hedlund
Creative Writing quotes by Garrett Hedlund
The move to creating stories was a natural progression for me, but the most pivotal time was probably in 6th grade: That year, a friend introduced me to the stories of Ray Bradbury, and a student teacher introduced me to creative writing. ~ Lynn Flewelling
Creative Writing quotes by Lynn Flewelling
Here's what I learned: First thing in the morning, before I have drowned myself in coffee, while I still have that sleepy brain I used to believe was useless - that is the best brain for creative writing. Words come pouring out easily while my head still feels as if it is full of ground fog, wrapped in flannel and gauze, and surrounded by a hive of humming, velvety sleep bees. ~ Merrill Markoe
Creative Writing quotes by Merrill Markoe
Every great and original writer, in proportion as he is great and original, must himself create the taste by which he is to be relished. ~ William Wordsworth
Creative Writing quotes by William Wordsworth
I hate to be a nag, but you have got to read. Like most authors, I run creative writing workshops from time to time, and speak, when invited to writers' circles and at summer schools, and I'm continually amazed at the number of would-be writers who scarcely read. For ideas to germinate and proliferate there has to be fertile ground to sow them in, and for the ground to be fertile it must be mulched with observation, imagination, and other writing. ~ Sarah Harrison
Creative Writing quotes by Sarah Harrison
Keep your whole being on the thing you are turning into words. The minute you flinch, and take your mind off this thing, and begin to look at the words and worry about them... Then your worry goes into them and they set about killing each other. So you keep going as long as you can, then look back and see what you have written. After a bit of practice and after telling yourself you are going to use any old word that comes into your head so long as it seems right, you will surprise yourself. You will read back through what you have written and you will get a shock. You will have captured a spirit, a creature. ~ Ted Hughes
Creative Writing quotes by Ted Hughes
Finally I had made that necessary imaginative leap - which is a real necessity, since most of us writers can't be out there living like crazy all the time. These days, very few are the writers whose book jackets list things like bush pilot, big game hunter, or exotic dancer. No, more often we are English teachers. We have children, we have mortgages, we have bills to pay. So we have to stop writing strictly about what we know, which is what they always told us to do in creative writing classes. Instead, we have to write about what we can learn, and what we can imagine, and thus we come to experience that great pleasure Anne Tyler noted when somebody asked her why she writes, and she answered, I write because I want more than one life. ~ Lee Smith
Creative Writing quotes by Lee Smith
Georgia took once a creative-writing course, and what the instructor told her was: Too many things. Too many things going on at the same time; also too many people. Think, he told her. What is the important thing? What do you want us to pay attention to? Think.
Eventually she wrote a story that was about her grandfather killing chickens, and the instructor seemed to be pleased with it. Georgia herself thought that it was a fake. She made a long list of all the things that had been left out and handed it in as an appendix to the story. The instructor said that she expected too much, of herself and of the process, and that she was wearing him out.
The course was not a total loss, because Georgia and the instructor ended up living together. ~ Alice Munro
Creative Writing quotes by Alice Munro
One professor in college told me flat out I wasn't good enough to enter the creative writing program. I saved that letter and promised myself I would send it back to her when my first book came out. ~ Ellen Potter
Creative Writing quotes by Ellen Potter
The fact is that I write under duress, often in my bed, often at the last minute. I'm kind of a binge writer I would say, which I don't support. I was always kind of that way. Probably the time I was the most regular as a writer was college. It was like, what else is there to do when you're living in the Midwest studying creative writing? ~ Lena Dunham
Creative Writing quotes by Lena Dunham
Buster sat on the curb in front of the college, waiting for his sister to pick him up. To pass the time, he skimmed the stories of the creative writing students. One was about a wild party and the story consisted almost entirely of a detailed explanation of a drinking game called Flip 'N Chug that seemed, to Buster, to be too complicated to facilitate the simple goal of getting drunk. ~ Kevin Wilson
Creative Writing quotes by Kevin Wilson
As with many teens, my first jobs included babysitting and mopping floors at McDonald's. Since then, I've held jobs a diverse as selling used cars, selling apparel, cosmetics, and real-estate, substitute-teaching six graders, teaching undergraduate creative writing, and working as an editorial assistant for a literary magazine. ~ Therese Fowler
Creative Writing quotes by Therese Fowler
Writers fly with imaginary wings. ~ Melody Robinette
Creative Writing quotes by Melody Robinette
After I started publishing poetry I got to teach creative writing. Eventually I was promoted and even got tenure. But then I felt compelled to drop everything and move. But I've been teaching for a long time. More than four decades. ~ Joan Larkin
Creative Writing quotes by Joan Larkin
Learn from your rejections and polish your craft. Write for the sheer joy of being creative. ~ Jonathan Weeks
Creative Writing quotes by Jonathan Weeks
I seem most instinctively to believe in the human value of creative writing, whether in the form of verse or fiction, as a mode of truth-telling, self-expression and homage to the twin miracles of creation and consciousness. ~ John Updike
Creative Writing quotes by John Updike
I do teach fiction and non-fiction, and usually I'm interested in works that confuse genre, but I'm very new to teaching creative writing, I don't have an MFA, or a PhD, I tend to approach it just through my own practice. ~ Kate Zambreno
Creative Writing quotes by Kate Zambreno
Creative writing programmes are not very necessary. They just exist so that people like us can make a living. ~ Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Creative Writing quotes by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
If you have a simply swell story in mind, you can forget the rules. A swell story takes care of itself. ~ Louise Dickinson Rich
Creative Writing quotes by Louise Dickinson Rich
Writing is the high alchemy of the soul that combines words and ideas to create magic. ~ Sharif Khan
Creative Writing quotes by Sharif Khan
Literary style is like crystal-ware: the cleaner the wineglass, the brighter the brilliance. As a reader, I agree with those who believe that a colour of the dress, which a character has on, as well as any enumeration and description of dishes at dinner or in the kitchen should be mentioned only in case if all this has a strong consequent relation to the plot, but as an author, I can't help mentioning all this, with no particular reason, just for love for my characters, desiring to give them something nice and pleasant. Melancholy grows a platinum rose. Affection grows a double rose. ~ Lara Biyuts
Creative Writing quotes by Lara Biyuts
When I was a kid, growing up during the 1970s, I used to read a lot of horror and science fiction. I graduated from comic books to paperbacks around the time I first entered my teens. And I want to say that what 99% of that stuff tells you about supposed encounters with the unknown is a formulaic convention. No one faints like a chicken-shit or else reaches for their weapon like Arnie Schwarzenegger in the face of something so utterly terrifying there isn't even a name for it. What those writers don't know is what happens in an encounter with the outside is this: that the moment slows down to such an extent that time itself simply stands still in your head. I suppose that fact doesn't make for good characterisation. It's incommunicable. I think they call it the numinous.

I once did a semester in creative writing back after graduating, around the decade King was outselling every other author on the planet, but could never make the grade. Still, I read a lot of the best attempts. Maybe that's why someone like Lovecraft, or Machen, or one of the old-school writers of that stuff I used to read had almost pulled it off. They were no good at characterisation and tended to use ciphers, presenting the phenomenon itself as the main protagonist, because it was the way things are when you encounter it. The thing empties you, draining out any semblance of normalcy, no matter what your history is, or what you think you're all about. Real horror consists not of the worst thing i ~ Mark Samuels
Creative Writing quotes by Mark Samuels
When I read students' attempts at creative writing it is obvious immediately that most of them have not read much or widely. The aspiring writer must read everything he or she can to appreciate the myriad ways words are used and to what effect. ~ Julius Lester
Creative Writing quotes by Julius Lester
Life isn't about winning or losing; it's about getting up and trying again. ~ Daniel L. Lewis
Creative Writing quotes by Daniel L. Lewis
Writing comes more easily if you have something to say. ~ Sholem Asch
Creative Writing quotes by Sholem Asch
There's still too much energy leftover at this tomb-desk, on Broadway, when I am semi-asleep at night in our bedroom, struggling to get a good night's rest. There's an overflow of loin energy. It spills out from my pores as if I were a cracked drum of reacting chemicals. I need to work to expend this excess energy in words, stories and books ... My mind is a body that's a mind. ~ Sergio Troncoso
Creative Writing quotes by Sergio Troncoso
I went to school for creative writing in college, and I wound up about six hours short of my degree. ~ Jason Isbell
Creative Writing quotes by Jason Isbell
Creative Writing was not a form of psychotherapy, in ways both sublime and ridiculuous, it clearly was, precisely that. ~ A.S. Byatt
Creative Writing quotes by A.S. Byatt
And after about two years, I realized that creative writing was not going to help you ace those biological tests. So I switched over to journalism. I didn't graduate with honors, but I did graduate on time and with some doing. ~ Bob Schieffer
Creative Writing quotes by Bob Schieffer
In my own life I studied music, not creative writing; I see a novel as music - an opening as an overture, themes and subplots as lines in a fugue. The chance to write a novel about a musician boxed in by all kinds of limitations but who plays out his ultimate struggle for freedom at the piano was irresistible. ~ Nicole Mones
Creative Writing quotes by Nicole Mones
If he can give his readers no reason why they should read his book, except that the events happened to him, it is not a valid book. ~ Ayn Rand
Creative Writing quotes by Ayn Rand
I'd been in college studying English creative writing and history when I made the decision to join the Marines in the runup to the Iraq war. ~ Phil Klay
Creative Writing quotes by Phil Klay
I was an English major in college, took a ton of creative writing courses, and was a newspaper reporter for 10 years. ~ Jennifer Weiner
Creative Writing quotes by Jennifer Weiner
None of my English teachers in college were praising me or telling me I was anything special. But then in creative writing classes they were. And I enjoyed those more anyway. ~ John Brandon
Creative Writing quotes by John Brandon
Sound is so important to creative writing. Think of the sounds you hear that you include and the similes you use to describe what things sound like. 'As she walked up the alley, her polyester workout pants sounded like windshield wipers swishing back and forth.' Cadence, onomatopoeia, the poetry of language are all so important. Learn all that you can about how to bring sound into your work. ~ Barbara DeMarco-Barrett
Creative Writing quotes by Barbara DeMarco-Barrett
I think you have to learn for yourself how to write. I'm slightly mystified by creative writing courses - God love them - because I can't understand how you can explain a process that I find so baffling. ~ Kate Atkinson
Creative Writing quotes by Kate Atkinson
Described as a "workaholic speed-writing freak" by fellow writers, a "creative writing class drill sergeant" by his writing 'padawans', Voinov is a self-confessed geek and has enlarged his days by 12 secret hours in return for the sacrifice of ten albino virgin pygmy hippos. ~ Aleksandr Voinov
Creative Writing quotes by Aleksandr Voinov
Telling stories has been a compulsion of mine since I could physically say, 'Once upon a time ... ' But in high school, I realized I could study creative writing in college and actually pursue it as a viable career. ~ Victoria Aveyard
Creative Writing quotes by Victoria Aveyard
I fell into playwriting accidentally, took some classes in it, and also took creative writing classes, but I really didn't expect it to be a career because I didn't believe there was a way to make money as a playwright without being lucky and I didn't feel particularly lucky. ~ Orson Scott Card
Creative Writing quotes by Orson Scott Card
I'm a writer who stacks cat food for a living. It's true: I have a master's degree in creative writing, I've published two critically successful books, and I get paid to replenish the shelves of my local food co-op with pet food, sponges and toilet paper. Nine days out of 10, I do it quite happily. ~ Ali Liebegott
Creative Writing quotes by Ali Liebegott
By what he chooses to present and by how he presents it, any author expresses his fundamental, metaphysical values. ~ Ayn Rand
Creative Writing quotes by Ayn Rand
I often said that writers are of two types.
There is the architect, which is one type. The architect, as if designing a building, lays out the entire novel at a time. He knows how many rooms there will be or what a roof will be made of or how high it will be, or where the plumbing will run and where the electrical outlets will be in its room. All that before he drives the first nail. Everything is there in the blueprint.
And then there's the gardener who digs the hole in the ground, puts in the seed and waters it with his blood and sees what comes up. The gardener knows certain things. He's not completely ignorant. He knows whether he planted an oak tree, or corn, or a cauliflower. He has some idea of the shape but a lot of it depends on the wind and the weather and how much blood he gives it and so forth.
No one is purely an architect or a gardener in terms of a writer, but many writers tend to one side or the other. I'm very much more a gardener. ~ George R R Martin
Creative Writing quotes by George R R Martin
I grew up around poets and novelists and my dad wrote poems about everything - from a cat sleeping in a window to a car wreck he passed on the highway. I learned not to censor myself: that was one of things I learned in my apprenticeship, my creative-writing apprenticeship with my dad. ~ Lucinda Williams
Creative Writing quotes by Lucinda Williams
I don't really believe in a creative-writing major as an undergraduate. It's a bad idea, terrible. I've met creative-writing majors from other places and they don't know a goddamn thing. They're the worst students. They just think they're good because they could pass. ~ Barry Hannah
Creative Writing quotes by Barry Hannah
Your head will tell you a thousand times that it's over before your heart will. ~ Mandy K.
Creative Writing quotes by Mandy K.
Strength of creative writing lies in the skill of handling words and articulating artistic expression of feelings ~ Suman Pokhrel
Creative Writing quotes by Suman Pokhrel
I try to tell student writers to read as much as possible, not only literature but philosophy, theory, and to form obsessions. There's a big taboo in fiction creative writing workshops against using the self at all, and I think I try to encourage students to write the self, but to connect the self to something larger, which is to be this thinking, seeing, searching, eternally curious person, and that writing can come out of investigating and trying to understand confusion, and doubts, and obsessions. ~ Kate Zambreno
Creative Writing quotes by Kate Zambreno
For some reason there's this myth that creativity - [especially] in terms of creative writing - is a gift you either have, or you don't. So when people first start writing, if they write something that's not very good, or if they try and it's difficult, they go, "Oh, I guess I don't have it." That doesn't seem very fair, you have to try and you have to work at it. If we get scared of one bad poem and quit, that's not doing anybody any good. ~ Sarah Kay
Creative Writing quotes by Sarah Kay
I wonder what it means about American literary culture and its transmission when I consider the number of American poets who earn their living teaching creative writing in universities. I've ended up doing that myself. ~ Marilyn Hacker
Creative Writing quotes by Marilyn Hacker
Hough I was creative, I also liked math and science. At Knox College, I studied creative writing and earned a degree in chemistry, thinking I would attend medical school. Ultimately, I decided that a career in nursing would allow more time for pursuing other creative interests. While I worked as an RN, I wrote stories inspired by my patients, designed t-shirts, and made hand-painted sandals. ~ Mary Pope Osborne
Creative Writing quotes by Mary Pope Osborne
These kids will make you cry, laugh ... They make you feel all kinds of emotions through their writings and they share a lot with me, as an instructor, that they might not normally share with other people because they are young artists and they need a platform for pulling that stuff out. ~ Clinton D. Powell
Creative Writing quotes by Clinton D. Powell
Every time you say blah blah blah, a creative writing teacher dies. ~ Michael Lopp
Creative Writing quotes by Michael Lopp
I don't think the creative writing industry has helped American poetry. ~ Robert Morgan
Creative Writing quotes by Robert Morgan
Create a character with an obsession, then follow. ~ Ray Bradbury
Creative Writing quotes by Ray Bradbury
Never write about a place until you're away from it, because it gives you perspective. Immediately after you've seen something you can give a photographic description of it and make it accurate. That's good practice, but it isn't creative writing. ~ Ernest Hemingway,
Creative Writing quotes by Ernest Hemingway,
After graduating, I'd moved to the Washington D.C. area to see what I could do with the skills I'd picked up from a creative writing degree. The chief export of the nation's capital is, of course, paper work, so I reckoned I could land some kind of writing or editing position at one of the many nonprofits and associations in the area. ~ Jeff Deck
Creative Writing quotes by Jeff Deck
Plays are nearly always about the consequences of events while films are usually about the events. The what-happens-next factor is essential in film. ~ Richard Toscan
Creative Writing quotes by Richard Toscan
It's despicable of an author to kill his main personage solely for stirring imagination of indifferent or mean minds. ~ Lara Biyuts
Creative Writing quotes by Lara Biyuts
Back in the days when American billboard advertising was in flower [said Hemingway], there were two slogans that I always rated above all others: the old Cremo Cigar ad that proclaimed, Spit Is a Horrid Word-but Worse on the end of Your Cigar, and Drink Schlitz in Brown Bottles and Avoid that Skunk Taste. You don't get creative writing like that any more. ~ A. E. Hotchner
Creative Writing quotes by A. E. Hotchner
A random guy I met at a party I went to in high school told me not to study creative writing because in his opinion studying creative writing as a major sucks the love of writing out of you (he was a creative writing major, so he said he would know). I did not want the love of writing sucked out of me, so I followed his advice (however, I did take a few creative writing workshops at IU and I enjoyed them very much). Instead, I had the love of art sucked out of me. Years later I met that guy from the party again in New York City where I moved after college to be an illustrator, and we got married. ~ Meg Cabot
Creative Writing quotes by Meg Cabot
Now lend me your ears. Here is Creative Writing 101:

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
4. Every sentence must do one of two things - reveal character or advance the action.
5. Start as close to the end as possible.
6. Be a sadist. No matter sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them - in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.
8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

The greatest American short story writer of my generation was Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964). She broke practically every one of my rules but the first. Great writers tend to do that. ~ Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Creative Writing quotes by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Creativity is a magic wand that works two ways. When you set it in action and seek to create something, it does not just brings into existence that object or work, it also raises in your heart a dream, a hope, and a will to achieve that creation. And when all else seems lost and steeped in hopelessness, the magic of creativity can still keep you going. For when all else seem dark, an urge to create something would still give you an aim to look forward to. And if you just take hold of this urge, it will take hold of you and see you through even the darkest times. Like it did to me. ~ Jyoti Arora
Creative Writing quotes by Jyoti Arora
A word of warning here. The events as you remember them will never be the same in your memory once you have turned them into a memoir. For years I have worried that if I turn all of my life into literature, I won't have any real life left - just stories about it. And it is a realistic concern: it does happen like that. I am no longer sure I remember how it felt to be twenty and living in Spain after my parents died; my book about it stands now between me and my memories. When I try to think about that time, what comes to mind most readily is what I wrote. ~ Judith Barrington
Creative Writing quotes by Judith Barrington
I love puppies, and I love animals in general. Besides that, I do martial arts: extreme martial arts. I also play real guitar and drums, and sing. And I'm taking some college classes, hoping to major in English and creative writing. ~ Cameron Monaghan
Creative Writing quotes by Cameron Monaghan
You gave me a soul touch. A touch beyond physical. The most powerful of touch. I thought it was about you but I was wrong it was about me. In me. It took me a lifetime to realize it was me, not you. Thank you for showing me my soul. ~ Renae A. Sauter
Creative Writing quotes by Renae A. Sauter
And though creative writing as an intellectual exercise may be pursued with profit by anyone, writing as a profession is not a job for amateurs, dilettantes, part-time thinkers, 25-watt feelers, the lazy, the insensitive, or the imitative.
