One of the most promising developments since the publication of "The Geek Syndrome" has been the emergence of the concept of neurodiversity: the notion that conditions like autism, dyslexia, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) should be regarded as naturally occurring cognitive variations with distinctive strengths that have contributed to the evolution of technology and culture rather than mere checklists of deficits and dysfunctions. ~ Steve Silberman
Checklists quotes by Steve Silberman
Because I was never a 'where do you see yourself in five years' person. I had no idea, and I didn't have a checklist, which really creates a lot less stress in your life. ~ Jennifer Aniston
Checklists quotes by Jennifer Aniston
Anyone who ever loves anyone truly loves them because of their indefinable essence, not because they conform to some checklist. ~ Kim Wilkins
Checklists quotes by Kim Wilkins
Designers of electronic charting systems don't seem to understand that checklists themselves are not the innovation, because checklists are not substitutes for care. The real innovation is having staff use lists to consistently create the safest and highest-quality clinical environment possible. ~ Theresa Brown
Checklists quotes by Theresa Brown
Leadership (according to John Sculley) revolves around vision, ideas, direction, and has more to do with inspiring people as to direction and goals than with day-to-day implementation. A leader must be able to leverage more than his own capabilities. He must be capable of inspiring other people to do things without actually sitting on top of them with a checklist. ~ Warren G. Bennis
Checklists quotes by Warren G. Bennis
I think that, back in the day, there used to be a lot of horror films that kind of had a checklist of what went into making the 'perfect horror film', and I think now people are raising the bar in the industry, as far as the types of horror films that are being made. ~ Elisha Cuthbert
Checklists quotes by Elisha Cuthbert
There is nothing less romantic, literary, or lyrical than the language of pathology, diagnosis, symptom checklists. As I read through these checklists over and over again I was struck by the harshness, the crudeness of the terminology. And once the evaluation process began, more and more distinctly unpoetic terms were added to the lists, as the problems quickly grew in scope and seriousness. ~ Priscilla Gilman
Checklists quotes by Priscilla Gilman
The shelves are filled with books about improving the process of leadership; discussions of how to hone its art are few. Checklists and processes do not challenge our ability to think, they do not force us to defend our ideas or look new ones in the face. They demand no depth. Defining leadership as an art rather than as a process does not mean that leadership cannot be taught. It merely means that gaining a greater understanding of leadership requires intellectual courage. Just as we develop physical courage by experiencing and functioning under physical fear and moral courage by making the choice of right amidst the pressure to do otherwise, so we develop intellectual courage through the discomfort and ambiguity of experiencing ideas that challenge our depth and perspective. Leaders develop intellectual courage by continuously sharpening the saber through education, and in doing so they
hone within themselves the art of leadership. ~ Christopher D. Kolenda
Checklists quotes by Christopher D. Kolenda
And a surfeit of checklists, coupled with unscrupulous drug reps, is, Gary said, a dreadful combination. There ~ Jon Ronson
Checklists quotes by Jon Ronson
No wise pilot, no matter how great his talent and experience, fails to use his checklist. ~ Charlie Munger
Checklists quotes by Charlie Munger
Good checklists, on the other hand are precise. They are efficient, to the point, and easy to use even in the most difficult situations. They do not try to spell out everything
a checklist cannot fly a plane. Instead, they provide reminders of only the most critical and important steps
the ones that even the highly skilled professional using them could miss. Good checklists are, above all, practical. ~ Atul Gawande
Checklists quotes by Atul Gawande
Under conditions of complexity, not only are checklists a help, they are required for success. ~ Atul Gawande
Checklists quotes by Atul Gawande
There are good checklists and bad, Boorman explained. Bad checklists are vague and imprecise. They are too long; they are hard to use; they are impractical. They are made by desk jockeys with no awareness of the situations in which they are to be deployed. They treat the people using the tools as dumb and try to spell out every single step. They turn people's brains off rather than turn them on. Good checklists, on the other hand, are precise. They are efficient, to the point, and easy to use even in the most difficult situations. They do not try to spell out everything - a checklist cannot fly a plane. Instead, they provide reminders of only the most critical and important steps - the ones that even the highly skilled professionals using them could miss. Good checklists are, above all, practical. When developing a Windows Store business app you should consult the following checklists to accelerate development while ensuring that a maintainable and testable app is produced. ~ Anonymous
Checklists quotes by Anonymous
We don't like checklists. They can be painstaking. They're not much fun. But I don't think the issue here is mere laziness. There's something deeper, more visceral going on when people walk away not only from saving lives but from making money. It somehow feels beneath us to use a checklist, an embarrassment. It runs counter to deeply held beliefs about how the truly great among us - those we aspire to be - handle situations of high stakes and complexity. The truly great are daring. They improvise. They do not have protocols and checklists. Maybe our idea of heroism needs updating. ~ Atul Gawande
Checklists quotes by Atul Gawande
But what might a woman say about church as she? What might a woman say about the church as body and bride?

Perhaps she would speak of the way a regular body moves through the world - always changing, never perfect - capable of nurturing life, not simply through the womb, but through hands, feet, eyes, voice, and brain. Every part is sacred. Every part has a function.

Perhaps she would speak of impossible expectations and all the time she's wasted trying to contort herself into the shape of those amorphous silhouettes that flit from magazines and billboards into her mind. Or of this screwed-up notion of purity as a status, as something awarded by men with tests and checklists and the power to give it and take it away.

Perhaps she would speak of the surprise of seeing herself - flaws and all - in the mirror on her wedding day. Or of the reality that with new life comes swollen breasts, dry heaves, dirty diapers, snotty noses, late-night arguments, and a whole army of new dangers and fears she never even considered before because life-giving isn't nearly as glamorous as it sounds, but it's a thousand times more beautiful.

Perhaps she would talk about being underestimated, about surprising people and surprising herself. Or about how there are moments when her own strength startles her, and moments when her weakness - her forgetfulness, her fear, her exhaustion - unnerve her.

Maybe she would tell of the time, in the mount ~ Rachel Held Evans
Checklists quotes by Rachel Held Evans
In my relationship with God, I've learned that if I follow a 'formula' for how I spend my time with Him, then I'm just accomplishing a checklist of things I feel obligated to do to please Him. This makes my spiritual life more about doing what I need to do to fulfill an obligation than something meaningful. ~ Joyce Meyer
Checklists quotes by Joyce Meyer
Scott Cole was the kind of man that women like me threw their checklists out the window for. - Harlow ~ Nina Levine
Checklists quotes by Nina Levine
How often does it work out that people make their checklists of what they want in a partner and then go out and fall for precisely that person? ~ Tawna Fenske
Checklists quotes by Tawna Fenske
Rule, once again, is that every minute spent in planning and creating checklists will save you ten minutes in execution and getting the job done. This ~ Brian Tracy
Checklists quotes by Brian Tracy
Live. How many of us need to be reminded that living has nothing to do with trying to be as good as someone else, or trying to fit into some category, or filling in the blanks on some stupid checklist. That it has nothing to do with punishing yourself for past mistakes. ~ Suzanne Selfors
Checklists quotes by Suzanne Selfors
It's almost therapeutic driving there and driving back (to North Carolina), with the time you get to think about things as well as create checklists. ~ Kurt Busch
Checklists quotes by Kurt Busch
Sometimes I even felt like he dated me as part of his plan, like they were going to have a checklist on the application, and one of the things to tick off was going to be, Do you have a reasonably intelligent girlfriend who shares your aspirations, and who is fully prepared to accept your limited availability? ~ Maureen Johnson
Checklists quotes by Maureen Johnson
In these modes, energy is at best regarded by architects as a set of necessary quantifications, bureaucratic mandates, and checklists rather than as a fundamental agent in novel formations of architecture. ~ William W. Braham
Checklists quotes by William W. Braham
My books are always tactical, bullet lists, this is what you need to do because I'm trying to appeal to people who are trying to change the world and they need checklists. ~ Guy Kawasaki
Checklists quotes by Guy Kawasaki
Awareness, even at a subconscious level, beats fancy checklists without it, track or you will fail. ~ Tim Ferriss
Checklists quotes by Tim Ferriss
I love plans. Checklists, spreadsheets, timelines. I am literally passionate about that stuff. ~ Claire Kingsley
Checklists quotes by Claire Kingsley
We are besieged by simple problems.... Checklists can provide protection ~ Atul Gawande
Checklists quotes by Atul Gawande
Leibniz endeavored to provide an account of inference and judgment involving the mechanical play of symbols and very little else. The checklists that result are the first of humanity's intellectual artifacts. They express, they explain, and so they ratify a power of the mind. And, of course, they are artifacts in the process of becoming algorithms. ~ David Berlinski
Checklists quotes by David Berlinski
Turning love into a commodity contributed greatly to the expansion of modern alienation ... It is the love of an actual person that transgresses the checklists and lets us accept another as they actually are. ~ Rod Dubey
Checklists quotes by Rod Dubey
All involve risk, uncertainty, and complexity - and therefore steps that are worth committing to a checklist and testing in routine care. Good checklists could become as important as doctors and nurses as good stethoscopes (which, unlike checklist, have never been proved to make a difference in patient care). The hard question - still unanswered - is whether medical culture can seize the opportunity. ~ Atul Gawande
Checklists quotes by Atul Gawande
It's a very simple example to show that if you miss one step in a process in can cost you an enormous amount of time and money to fix. With a checklist, you can write it down and give it some someone else for them to do successfully. Checklists require discipline and organization, which is something internet marketers have to master. ~ Brian Tracy
Checklists quotes by Brian Tracy
checklists seem able to defend anyone, even the experienced, against failure in many more tasks than we realized. They provide a kind of cognitive net. They catch mental flaws inherent in all of us - flaws of memory and attention and thoroughness. And because they do, they raise wide, unexpected possibilities. But ~ Atul Gawande
Checklists quotes by Atul Gawande
Happiness isn't found in some finite checklist of goals that we can diligently complete and then coast. It's how we live our lives in the process. That's why the four pillars of happiness are faith, family, community and meaningful work. Those are priorities we have to keep investing in. ~ Arthur C. Brooks
Checklists quotes by Arthur C. Brooks
You get a checklist, and then you just sort of ride herd on it. It's just a few items on a single sheet of paper. ~ Kirk Kerkorian
Checklists quotes by Kirk Kerkorian
Define Your Options

When people are spinning their rumination wheels about a particular problem, they often don't concretely define what their options are for moving forward. To shift out of rumination and into problem-solving mode, concretely and realistically define what your best three to six options are. For example, imagine you've recently hired a new employee but that person is not working out. Instead of mentally slapping yourself around about why you made the hire, it would be more useful to define what your options are at this point:

--Giving the employee more time
--Shifting the employee's responsibilities to simpler jobs
--Giving the employee checklists of the steps needed to complete each task
--Having another employee work with the individual
--Firing the employee

Defining your options relieves some of the stress of rumination and helps you shift to effective problem solving. Keeping your list of options short will prevent you from running into choice-overload problems. Research shows that if you consider more than three to six choices, you're less likely to end up making a choice.
Experiment: Practice concretely defining your best three to six options for moving forward with a problem you're currently ruminating or worrying about. Write brief bullet points, like in the example just given. You can use this method for all sorts of problems. For example, a friend just used it to come up with ideas for how t ~ Alice Boyes

Making checklists of things you're looking for in a person is the numero uno thing you can do to guarantee you'll be alone forever. ~ Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Checklists quotes by Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Checklists turn out ... to be among the basic tools of the quality and productivity revolution in aviation, engineering, construction - in virtually every field combining high risk and complexity. Checklists seem lowly and simplistic, but they help fill in for the gaps in our brains and between our brains. ~ Atul Gawande
Checklists quotes by Atul Gawande
It is common to misconceive how checklists function in complex lines of work. They are not comprehensive how-to guides, whether for building a skyscraper or getting a plane out of trouble. They are quick and simple tools aimed to buttress the skills of expert professionals. And ~ Atul Gawande
Checklists quotes by Atul Gawande
Before taxiing out to the runway, we paused again for five more checks: whether anti-icing was necessary and completed, the autobrakes were set, the flight controls were checked, the ground equipment was cleared, and no warning lights were on. The three checklists ~ Atul Gawande
