Protestants sometimes laugh at us because we address ourselves, now to our Lady of Perpetual Succor, no to our Lady of Good Counsel, now to our Lady of Lourdes, and so on, as if they were so many different people. But the case is much worse than that, if they only knew; every individual Catholic has a separate our Lady to pray to, his Mother, the one who seems to care for him individually, has won him so many favours, has stood by him in so many difficulties, as if she had no other thought or business in heaven but to watch over him. ~ Ronald Knox
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Ronald Knox
Curiously enough, it is a fear of how grace will change and improve them that keeps many souls away from God. They want God to take them as they are and let them stay that way. They want Him to take away their love of riches, but not their riches - to purge them of the disgust of sin, but not of the pleasure of sin. Some of them equate goodness with indifference to evil and think that God is good if He is broad-minded or tolerant about evil. Like the onlookers at the Cross, they want God on their terms, not His, and they shout, "Come down, and we will believe." But the things they ask are the marks of a false religion: it promises salvation without a cross, abandonment without sacrifice, Christ without his nails. God is a consuming fire; our desire for God must include a willingness to have the chaff burned from our intellect and the weeds of our sinful will purged. The very fear souls have of surrendering themselves to the Lord with a cross is an evidence of their instinctive belief in His Holiness. Because God is fire, we cannot escape Him, whether we draw near for conversion or flee from aversion: in either case, He affects us. If we accept His love, its fires will illumine and warm us; if we reject Him, they will still burn on in us in frustration and remorse. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Those who deny guilt and sin are like the Pharisees of old who thought our Saviour had a "guilt complex" because He accused them of being whited sepulchers - outside clean, inside full of dead men's bones. Those who admit that they are guilty are like the public sinners and the publicans of whom Our Lord said, "Amen, I say to you, that the publicans and the harlots shall go into the Kingdom of God before you" (Matt. 21:31). Those who think they are healthy but have a hidden moral cancer are incurable; the sick who want to be healed have a chance. All denial of guilt keeps people out of the area of love and, by inducing self-righteousness, prevents a cure. The two facts of healing in the physical order are these: A physician cannot heal us unless we put ourselves into his hands, and we will not put ourselves into his hands unless we know that we are sick. In like manner, a sinner's awareness of sin is one requisite for his recovery; the other is his longing for God. When we long for God, we do so not as sinners, but as lovers. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
My spiritual life is an interesting thing. It's pretty private. I was raised Catholic in the Baptist Bible belt, so my spirituality was challenged and very much a private thing and it continues to be. ~ Kelli O'Hara
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Kelli O'Hara
Why is it that our many mental institutions are overcrowded? People will not take their time. They do not live in the present! For are not all fears, phobias, crippling anxieties tied in with the future - a time that has not yet come - and may not? And are not deep depressions, melancholias, and foolish guilt complexes connected with the past - a time that is gone, and is gone forever - a time that cannot be changed even by God Almighty? These dementias most certainly bespeak some relation to the fact that those plagued with them have not been objective enough to stay in contact with the one great gratuitous reality called now. ~ M. Raymond
Catholic Spirituality quotes by M. Raymond
I am not afraid to fail, I am scared to death of dying and having the Lord say to me.
'Angelica, this is what you might have done had you trust me more'. ~ Mother Angelica
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Mother Angelica
Lord, you have granted me your secret friendship by opening the sacred ark of your divinity, your deified heart, to me in so many ways as to be the source of all my happiness; sometimes imparting it freely, sometimes as a special mark of our mutual friendship. You have so often melted my soul with your loving caresses that, if I did not know the abyss of your overflowing condescensions, I should be amazed were I told that even your Blessed Mother had been chosen to receive such extraordinary marks of tenderness and affection (Adapted from The Life and Revelations of Saint Gertrude). ~ Gertrude The Great
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Gertrude The Great
It is no wonder that Mary loves our day and age. Thanks to persecution, we are giving more to her Son than any other age or day since Calvary. The Nazis in Germany, Austria, and Poland; The Reds in all the Balkan lands, Russia, and now in China, have done more for heaven than ever did the Roman Caesars, the kings and queens of England, or the madmen of the French Revolution. They have done more for the earth, too. For while peopling heaven with martyrs, they have also spread far and wide the grace of Christ Jesus, thanks to the oneness of His mystical body. ~ M. Raymond
Catholic Spirituality quotes by M. Raymond
By way of parenthesis let me say that this hand on the tomb has a lovely lesson for all those unfortunate members of Christ who have fallen into mortal sin. In them, Jesus lies dead - as dead as he was on this Sabbath of twenty centuries ago. But on them, as on this tomb, the hand of Mary, the Refuge of Sinners, rests, awaiting and praying for the Resurrection of Christ within them! May those who are in such a state fell that hand as they read this book, and bring Christ to life within them by asking Mary to help them make a perfect act of contrition, which is an act of love, this moment. She can grant such a grace; for she is Mediatrix of all grace! ~ M. Raymond
Catholic Spirituality quotes by M. Raymond
The world knows that Catholics have a high standard of purity. But the world is not going to be impressed unless it is assured that Catholics keep it. ~ Ronald Knox
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Ronald Knox
It was surprisingly difficult to find prayers of thanks - the least represented of any type of prayer. ~ Marie Noël
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Marie Noël
I don't go to church any more, but I think that Catholicism is rather like the brand they use on cattle: I feel so formed in that Catholic mould that I don't think I could adopt any other form of spirituality. I still get feelings of consolation about churches. ~ Rachel Cusk
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Rachel Cusk
Deep sorrow does not come because one has violated a law, but only if one knows he has broken off the relationship with Divine Love. But there is yet another element required for regeneration, the element of repentance and reparation. Repentance is a rather dry-eyed affair; tears flow in sorrow, but sweat pours out in repentance. It is not enough to tell God we are sorry and then forget all about it. If we broke a neighbor's window, we would not only apologize but also would go to the trouble of putting in a new pane. Since all sin disturbs the equilibrium and balance of justice and love, there must be a restoration involving toil and effort. To see why this must be, suppose that every time a person did wrong he was told to drive a nail into the wall of his living room and every time that he was forgiven he was told to pull it out. The holes would still remain after the forgiveness. Thus every sin after being forgiven leaves "holes" or "wounds" in our human nature, and the filling up of these holes is done by penance, a thief who steals a watch can be forgiven for the theft, but only if he returns the watch. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
But the only thing that is important is, Am I loving God and growing holy every day? ~ Mother Angelica
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Mother Angelica
We receive God's Will only in fragments; tiny fragments; one to each new now. It is our business to take them and piece them together, to fashion them into the design that is His and has been His from all eternity. What that design is we shall see only at our last moment. It will be perfect as God wills it to be perfect only if we live His Will in the now, the only fragment that is ours, the only fragment of God's plan that is allowed in our hands, the only fragment of Christ's life in us and our life in Christ that can be lived. But it is only by "gathering up these fragments, lest they be lost" that we can really live and attain life's only success - sainthood. ~ M. Raymond
Catholic Spirituality quotes by M. Raymond
I live with a passionate passion. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
I don't think you can be a Catholic without an accompanying measure of guilt. ~ Mia Farrow
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Mia Farrow
With a beginner's mind, we can all become more fluid in our understanding and thereby pave the way for a more fulfilling and balanced future. ~ Benjamin W. Decker
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Benjamin W. Decker
I'm a dot in the grand scheme of things. I don't matter, not even to the other dots. ~ Ash Gray
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Ash Gray
It is far more creative to work with the idea of mindfulness rather than the idea of will. Too often people try to change their lives by using the will as a kind of hammer to beat their lives into proper shape. This way of approaching the sacredness of one's own presence is externalist and violent. It brings you falsely outside yourself, and you can spend years lost in the wilderness of your own mechanical, spiritual programs. You can perish in a famine of your own making. If you work with a different rhythm, you will come easily and naturally home to yourself. Your soul knows the geography of your destiny. Your soul alone has the map of your future, therefore you can trust this indirect, oblique side of yourself. If you do, it will take you where you need to go, but more important it will teach you a kindness of rhythm in your journey. There are no general principles for this art of being. Yet the signature of this unique journey is inscribed deeply in each soul. If you attend to yourself and seek to come into your presence, you will find exactly the right rhythm for your life. ~ John O'Donohue
Catholic Spirituality quotes by John O'Donohue
When you are closer to success, don't get upset by the tiny failures, no matter what happen, put more love, more awareness, more effort to your goal. The Sun will rise again. ~ Amit Ray
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Amit Ray
Earthly riches are like the reed. Its roots are sunk in the swamp, and its exterior is fair to behold; but inside it is hollow. If a man leans on such a reed, it will snap off and pierce his soul. ~ Anthony Of Padua
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Anthony Of Padua
Spirituality believes in oneness and universal consciousness. ~ Debasish Mridha
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Debasish Mridha

There is a greater purpose to living which is found in the spirit, which is the Being, and that purpose is worth living for. ~ Belsebuub
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Belsebuub
As meditation deepens, compulsions, cravings, and fits of emotions begin to lose their power to dictate our behavior. We see clearly that choices are possible: we can say yes, or we can say no.
... "All we are is the result of what we have thought." By changing our mode of thinking, we can remake ourselves completely. ~ Eknath Easwaran
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Eknath Easwaran
Religious freedom doesn't include the freedom to disregard the law and restrict another's freedom to believe and act differently. No one's forcing Catholic nuns to practice birth control, or priests to wear condoms (good idea tho). If you really feel your religious beliefs conflict with the mandates of running a business, the solution is simple: Get your ass out of the boardroom and back to the pulpit (where it belongs). ~ Quentin R. Bufogle
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Quentin R. Bufogle
Life gives you exactly what you need to awaken. ~ T. Scott McLeod
Catholic Spirituality quotes by T. Scott McLeod
The trees reflected in the river - they are unconscious of a spiritual world so near to them. So are we. ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Catholics Come Home inspires each of us to share God's love with others, in order to help change the world for the better, for eternity! ~ Roma Downey
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Roma Downey
An effort was made to spread this new materialist atheism with its Communist consequence "by the sword" (as the metaphor goes), that is, by the invasion of neighboring countries with consequent further massacres and the extension of the area of despotic Soviet control ... This armed attempt at expansion was checked by Catholic Poland, the most immediately exposed victim, in what has been called "one of the decisive battles of the world. ~ Hilaire Belloc
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Hilaire Belloc
God gives us not only the truth but also the ability to believe it; not only the new thing to see but also the new eye to see it with. ~ Peter Kreeft
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Peter Kreeft
The Beats are crucial to an understanding of America's cultural revolution not least because in their lives, their proclamations, and (for lack of a more accurate term) their 'work' they anticipated so many of the pathologies of the Sixties and Seventies. Their programmatic anti-Americanism, their avid celebration of drug abuse, their squalid, promiscuous sex lives, their pseudo-spirituality, their attack on rationality and their degradation of intellectual standards, their aggressive narcissism and juvenile political posturing: in all this and more, the Beats were every bit as 'advanced' as any Sixties radical. ~ Roger Kimball
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Roger Kimball
This is what enlightenment is all about - a deep understanding that there is no problem. Then, with no problem to solve, what will you do? Immediately you start living. You will eat, you will sleep, you will love, you will work, you will have a chit-chat, you will sing, you will dance - what else is there to do? ~ Rajneesh
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Rajneesh
Souls reconstructed with faith transform agony into peace. ~ Aberjhani
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Aberjhani
The movement of descent and discovery begins at the moment you consciously become dissatisfied with life. Contrary to most professional opinion, this gnawing dissatisfaction with life is not a sign of "mental illness," nor an indication of poor social adjustment, nor a character disorder. For concealed within this basic unhappiness with life and existence is the embryo of a growing intelligence, a special intelligence usually buried under the immense weight of social shams. A person who is beginning to sense the suffering of life is, at the same time, beginning to awaken to deeper realities, truer realities. For suffering smashes to pieces the complacency of our normal fictions about reality, and forces us to become alive in a special sense - to see carefully, to feel deeply, to touch ourselves and our worlds in ways we have heretofore avoided. It has been said, and truly I think, that suffering is the first grace. In a special sense, suffering is almost a time of rejoicing, for it marks the birth of creative insight.

But only in a special sense. Some people cling to their suffering as a mother to its child, carrying it as a burden they dare not set down. They do not face suffering with awareness, but rather clutch at their suffering, secretly transfixed with the spasms of martyrdom. Suffering should neither be denied awareness, avoided, despised, not glorified, clung to, dramatized. The emergence of suffering is not so much good as it is a good sign, an indicatio ~ Ken Wilber
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Ken Wilber
The old Catholic parties hounded me with a Christian hatred from station to station, city to city, one stage to another. ~ Josephine Baker
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Josephine Baker
For better or worse, US Keynesianism was so far ahead of where it started. I am a cafeteria Keynesian. You know what a cafeteria catholic is? ~ Paul Samuelson
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Paul Samuelson
Notionally, it was the anchor of the region, but it existed at such a spiritual and sociological remove that it could have been the moon. Most likely, people settling in the San Jacinto Valley hoped not to make their way closer to Los Angeles but to make their way farther from it. ~ Susan Orlean
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Susan Orlean
I was brought up a Catholic, for that you get an A level in guilt. ~ Billy Connolly
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Billy Connolly
Archbishop Mannix was possessed of the clearest intellect I have ever encountered. He prayed regularly for five hours and more each day, this in the midst of a life of intense activity. When he was well over ninety, I once asked him about the precise quality of the Faith which had sustained him. His answer? 'My Faith has always been like a thin silken thread, fraying perpetually at the brink of a precipice over which I hang. Yet the thread has never snapped. ~ Bartholomew Augustine Santamaria
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Bartholomew Augustine Santamaria
Man cannot pretend to be higher in ethics, spirituality, advancement, or civilisation than other creatures, and at the same time live by lower standards than the vulture or hyena. ~ H. Jay Dinshah
Catholic Spirituality quotes by H. Jay Dinshah
Every kid that goes to Catholic school believes he's going to be a priest one day. ~ Cheech Marin
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Cheech Marin
Expose human ties for what they really are and you are most likely to find the worst forms of betrayal staring back at you. ~ Janvier Chouteu-Chando
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Janvier Chouteu-Chando
By associating votive offerings with sacred images, the Catholic Church, it its wisdom, had left its formerly pagan flock a legitimate outlet for the inveterate impulse to associate oneself, or one's own effigy, with the Divine as expressed in the palpable form of the human image. ~ Aby Warburg
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Aby Warburg
One's spirituality is about one's deepest personal understanding of and interactions with Life and God ... whatever those may be. ~ Neale Donald Walsch
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Neale Donald Walsch
I was a fervent Catholic, and I belonged to the national organizations, even becoming one of the national leaders, until the age of 21, 22. ~ Umberto Eco
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Umberto Eco
You can live as a particle crashing about and colliding in a welter of materials with god, or you can live as a particle crashing about and colliding in a welter of materials without god. But you cannot live outside the welter of colliding materials. ~ Annie Dillard
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Annie Dillard

Catholic Spirituality quotes by Adalbert De Vogue
Don't worry about losing yourself helping others; you find yourself there too. ~ Matshona Dhliwayo
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Matshona Dhliwayo
Really to believe in human nature while striving to know the thousand forces that warp it from its ideal development-to call for and expect much from men and women, and not to be disappointed
and embittered if they fall short- to try to do good with people rather than to them- this is my religion on its human side. And if God exists, I think that he must be in the warm sun, in the kindly actions of the people we know and read of, in the beautiful things of art and nature, and in the closeness of friendships. ~ Randolph Bourne
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Randolph Bourne
It's not always easy to find the motivation to push yourself to higher limits. But when you surround yourself with people who inspire you, you'll find that their attitudes and their outlook on life are contagious. You will learn from their mistakes and their successes. You will gain a wealth of knowledge and wisdom, which will only help you grow and get you closer to your own goals. ~ Anonymous
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Anonymous
Often, people get a temporary high, a fleeting sense of belonging and well-being from the illusion of strength that comes from attaching themselves to gurus, without realizing that the energy they associate with the so called holy person comes from within themselves. ~ Indu Muralidharan
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Indu Muralidharan
I grew up in a Catholic family in the Midwest. And I knew people of different faiths and people that were atheists and people that were agnostic. ~ Jim Gaffigan
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Jim Gaffigan
The Catholic Church is an institution I am bound to hold divine but for unbelievers a proof of its divinity might be found in the fact that no merely human institution conducted with such knavish imbecility would have lasted a fortnight. ~ Hilaire Belloc
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Hilaire Belloc
Christians must lean on the Cross of Christ just as travelers lean on a staff when they begin a long journey. ~ Anthony Of Padua
Catholic Spirituality quotes by Anthony Of Padua
The purpose of our creation is obvious: to reach our utmost goals of belief, knowledge, and spirituality; to reflect on the universe, humanity, and God, and thus prove our value as human beings. ~ Fethullah Gulen
