In fact, if you're not prepared to die when you're almost sixty, then I would say you've been falling down on your philosophical responsibilities as a grown-up human being. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Much of my rebelliousness starts with indifference to what is urgently important to others. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Women have always been healers. They were the unlicensed doctors and anatomists. They were abortionists, nurses and counselors. They were the pharmacists, cultivating healing herbs, and exchanging the secrets of their uses. They were midwives, traveling from home to home and village to village. For centuries women were doctors without degrees, barred from books and lectures, learning from each other, and passing on experience from neighbor to neighbor and mother to daughter. They were called "wise women" by the people, witches or charlatans by the authorities. Medicine is part of our heritage as women, our history, our birthright. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The label of liberalism is hardly a sentence to public ignominy: otherwise Bruce Springsteen would still be rehabilitating used Cadillacs in Asbury Park and Jane Fonda, for all we know, would be just another overweight housewife. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
There is a reason why America produced the most vigorous feminist movement in the world: We were one of the only countries in which the middle class (which is wealthy by world standards) customarily employed its own women as domestic servants. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
There is a vast difference between positive thinking and existential courage. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
If men were equally at risk from this condition - if they knew their bellies might swell as if they were suffering from end-stage cirrhosis, that they would have to go nearly a year without a stiff drink, a cigarette, or even an aspirin, that they would be subject to fainting spells and unable to fight their way onto commuter trains - then I am sure that pregnancy would be classified as a sexually transmitted disease and abortions would be no more controversial than emergency appendectomies. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Both chronic, long-term poverty and downward mobility from the middle class are in the same category of things that America likes not to think about. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I do not write this in a spirit of sourness or personal disappointment of any kind, nor do I have any romantic attachment to suffering as a source of insight or virtue. On the contrary, I would like to see more smiles, more laughter, more hugs, more happiness and, better yet, joy. In my own vision of utopia, there is not only more comfort, and security for everyone - better jobs, health care, and so forth - there are also more parties, festivities, and opportunities for dancing in the streets. Once our basic material needs are met - in my utopia, anyway - life becomes a perpetual celebration in which everyone has a talent to contribute. But we cannot levitate ourselves into that blessed condition by wishing it. We need to brace ourselves for a struggle against terrifying obstacles, both of our own making and imposed by the natural world. And the first step is to recover from the mass delusion that is positive thinking. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Poverty is not a character failing or a lack of motivation. Poverty is a shortage of money. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
With his long hair, his hints of violence, and his promise of ecstasy, Dionysus was the first rock star. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
James Bond in his Sean Connery days ... was the first well-known bachelor on the American scene who was not a drifter or a degenerate and did not eat out of cans. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I expected, as I approached the corporate world, to enter a brisk, logical, nonsense-free zone, almost like the military - or a disciplined, up-to-date military anyway - in its focus on concrete results. How else would companies survive fierce competition? But what I encountered was a culture riven with assumptions unrelated to those that underlie the fact- and logic-based worlds of, say science and journalism - a culture addicted to untested habits, paralyzed by conformity, and shot through with magical thinking. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
People who just pretend to have a positive attitude may be more acceptable, but they will still attract according to how they are really vibrating- the energy they are emanating will attract their circumstances. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
To fight against a war or, better yet, and entire "war machine," we had to become warriors ourselves. This is the cunning symmetry of war: Enemies tend to come to resemble one another. And this was perhaps especially so in a culture that appallingly - to us - applied the war meme to just about anything, as in the "War on Poverty. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
To acknowledge the existence of other people is also to acknowledge that they are not reliable sources of safety or comfort. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I'm not questioning the monotheistic god. I think there's absolutely no evidence for the existence of such a god. When I say that, I mean I'm - part of that is that the idea that God could be all-powerful and also benevolent is on its face contradictory. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I'm an obsessive. When I get a problem, a question in my mind, it can take me over. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Once you do lose a job, there are not a lot of social supports for you. You lose health insurance because we have this absurd system in America where health insurance is usually tied to employment. Your income dips. And that's when you get into selling the house. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Marriage is socialism among two people. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Way before puberty, before the journal, before the formulation of my life's mission, when I must have been eight or younger, I had a rule: "Think in complete sentences." No giving way to inner screams or sobs - just keep stringing out words in grammatical order. This was a way to keep from going under ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
We can hardly pride ourselves on being the world's preeminent democracy, after all, if the large numbers of citizens spend half their waking hours in what amounts, in plain terms, to a dictatorship. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Tonight, unhappy with your love, your job, your life, not enough money? Use your head. You can think yourself into a lot better you. Positive thoughts can transform, can attract the good things you know you want. Sound far-fetched? Think again. It's supported by science. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
We [on the left] have to be used to being a minority
a small minority
for some time to come. The odd thing is that the right, even when it is in power, likes to think of itself as an embattled minority against this elite that somehow runs everything. Whereas the left, even when it has no power at all, likes to imagine it somehow represents the majority of people. These are mirror-image delusions. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Most accounts of mystical experiences ... insist that the Other in the encounter appears to be "living" or alive, as in "living God." But is it alive in any biological sense? Does it eat and metabolize? Does it reproduce - an option that monotheism would seem to foreclose? ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I'm not a nice person. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I believe nothing. Belief is intellectual surrender; "faith" a state of willed self-delusion. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
It was a very big principle in my upbringing that you should respect everybody's work. The street sweeper. Everybody. You should never look down on anybody for their work. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
In my experience, any class or assembly restricted to girls was going to be in some way degrading, like the one where we'd been convened to receive the information that from now on our bodies would be producing poisons that would need to be discharged on a monthly basis, through an unspecified orifice. The restriction of the typing requirement to girls suggested some sort of connection between our festering genitals and the need to serve in a clerical-type occupation, perhaps as a punishment. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Considering the absence of legal coercion, the surprising thing is that men have for so long, and, on the whole, so reliably, adhered to what we might call the breadwinner ethic. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I had discovered that writing
with whatever instrument
was a powerful aid to thinking, and thinking was what I now resolved to do. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Morality, as far as I could see, originates in atheism and the realization that no higher power is coming along to feed the hungry or lift the fallen. Mercy is left entirely to us. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The advice that you must change your environment - for example, by eliminating negative people and news - is an admission that there may in fact be a "real world" out there that is utterly unaffected by our wishes. In the face of this terrifying possibility, the only "positive" response is to withdraw into one's own carefully constructed world of constant approval and affirmation, nice news, and smiling people. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
This advice comes as a surprise: job searching is not joblessness; it is a job in itself and should be structured to resemble one, right down to the more regrettable features of employment, like having to follow orders
orders which are in this case self-generated. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
In Workers in a Lean World: Unions in the International Economy (Verso, 1997), Kim Moody cites studies finding an increase in stress-related workplace injuries and illness between the mid-1980s and the early 1990s. He argues that rising stress levels reflect a new system of "management by stress" in which workers in a variety of industries are being squeezed to extract maximum productivity, to the detriment of their health. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
When I was 13, I had these episodes where I could just see the world without any words attached to it, without any associations. It was a little bit spooky. A lot of people might have even thought it was pathological. I thought it was interesting. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Roman Catholicism: a hundred million people bowing down before a flesh-hating, elderly celibate. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
According to the historian William H. McNeil, European churches did not have pews until sometime in the eighteenth century. People stood or milled around, creating a very different dynamic than we find in today's churches, where people are expected to spend most of their time sitting. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
To draw for a moment from an entirely different corner of my life, that part of me still attached to the biological sciences, there is ample evidence that animals - rats and monkeys, for example - that are forced into a subordinate status within their social systems adapt their brain chemistry accordingly, becoming 'depressed' in humanlike ways. Their behavior is anxious and withdrawn; the level of serotonin (the neurotransmitter boosted by some antidepressants) declines in their brains. And - what is especially relevant here - they avoid fighting even in self-defense ... My guess is that the indignities imposed on so many low-wage workers - the drug tests, the constant surveillance, being 'reamed out' by managers - are part of what keeps wages low. If you're made to feel unworthy enough, you may come to think that what you're paid is what you are actually worth. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The obvious liberal rejoinders come to mind: What about the child whose home is hit by a bomb? Did she have some bomb-shaped thoughtform that brought ruin down on her head? And did my [fired white-collar workers] boot-camp mates cause the layoffs that drove them out of their jobs by "vibrating" at a layoff-related frequency? It seems inexcusably cruel to tell people who have reach some kind of personal nadir that their probem is entirely of their own making ... ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
It's a glorious universe the positive thinkers have come up with, a vast, shimmering aurora borealis in which desires mingle freely with their realizations ... Dreams go out and fulfill themselves; wishes need only to be articulated. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
In books, coaching sessions, and networking events aimed at the white-collar unemployed, the seeker soon encounters ideologies that are explicitly hostile to any larger, social understanding of his or her situation. The most blatant of these, in my experience, was the EST-like, victim-blaming ideology represented by Patrick Knowles and the books he recommended to his boot-camp participants. Recall that at the boot camp, the timid suggestion that there might be an outer world defined by the market or ruled by CEOs was immediately rebuked; there was only us, the job seekers. It was we who had to change. In a milder form, the constant injunction to maintain a winning attitude carries the same message: look inward, not outward; the world is entirely what you will it to be. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
But the economic meltdown should have undone, once and for all, the idea of poverty as a personal shortcoming or dysfunctional state of mind. The lines at unemployment offices and churches offering free food includes strivers as well as slackers, habitual optimists as well as the chronically depressed. When and if the economy recovers we can never allow ourselves to forget how widespread our vulnerability is, how easy it is to spiral down toward destitution. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
One of the most essential and mundane of human activities - taking care of children - requires high levels of anxious vigilance ... [Parents] dare not risk assuming that the sudden quiet from the toddlers' room means they are studying with Baby Einstein. Visualize fratricidal stranglings and electric outlets stabbed with forks: this is how we have reproduced our genomes. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Exercise is the yuppie version of bulimia. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
We were beginning to see that the medical profession, at the time still over 90 percent male, had transformed childbirth from a natural event into a surgical operation performed on an unconscious patient in what approximated a sterile environment. Routinely, the woman about to give birth was subjected to an enema, had her pubic hair shaved off, and was placed in the lithotomy position - on her back, with knees up and crotch spread wide open. As the baby began to emerge, the obstetrician performed an episiotomy, a surgical enlargement of the vaginal opening, which had to be stitched back together after birth. Each of these procedures came with a medical rationale: The enema was to prevent contamination with feces; the pubic hair was shaved because it might be unclean; the episiotomy was meant to ease the baby's exit. But each of these was also painful, both physically and otherwise, and some came with their own risks, Shaving produces small cuts and abrasions that are open to infection; episiotomy scars heal m ore slowly than natural tears and can make it difficult for the woman to walk or relieve herself for weeks afterward. The lithotomy position may be more congenial for the physician than kneeling before a sitting woman, but it impedes the baby's process through the birth canal and can lead to tailbone injuries in the mother. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
It's even occurred to me, as a teeny little subversive whisper of a thought, that if we stop mowing the lawn right now, it will probably be a long, long time before the yard gets overrun by lions and snakes. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Sometimes writing is pure hell. I'll write something and look at it in a few hours and say, "This is crap. What will I do with my life? I'll never write again." It's a bipolar business, and you bounce back. You become gripped with some new insight that shows the way. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
For all the talk about the need to be a likable "team player," many people work in a fairly cutthroat environment that would seem to be especially challenging to those who possess the recommended traits. Cheerfulness, upbeatness, and compliance: these are the qualities of subordinates
of servants rather than masters, women (traditionally, anyway) rather than men. After advising his readers to overcome the bitterness and negativity engendered by frequent job loss and to achieve a perpetually sunny outlook, management guru Harvey Mackay notes cryptically that "the nicest, most loyal, and most submissive employees are often the easiest people to fire." Given the turmoil in the corporate world, the prescriptions of niceness ring of lambs-to-the-slaughter. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Poor whites had always had the comfort of knowing that someone was worse off and more despised than they were; racial subjugation was the ground under their feet, the rock they stood upon, even when their own situation was deteriorating. That slender assurance is shrinking. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
What you don't necessarily realize when you start selling your time by the hour is that what you're really selling is your life. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The urge to transform one's appearance, to dance outdoors, to mock the powerful and embrace perfect strangers is not easy to suppress.
Barbara Ehrenreich, Dancing in the Streets, 260. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Natural selection, as it has operated in human history, favors not only the clever but the murderous. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Sometimes we need to heed our fears and negative thoughts, and at all times we need to be alert to the world outside ourselves, even when that includes absorbing bad news and entertaining the views of "negative" people. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Feminists have not tried to "destroy the family". We just thought the family was such a good idea that men might want to get involved in it too. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Among other things, [books by Bruce Doyle III and Mike Hernacki] explain the importance of the "winning attitude" I have been urged to adopt: a positive attitude "attracts" or "fulfils", depending on which author's weird science you go with, postiive results, with little or no action on your part required. Herein, too, lies the answer to the question I once posed ... : would it be enough just to fake a winning attitude? No way, according to Doyle: ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
We do not look into mirrors, for example, to see our "true" selves, but to see what others are seeing, and what passes for inner reflection is often an agonizing assessment of how others are judging us. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
There seems to be a vicious cycle at work here, making ours not just an economy but a culture of extreme inequality. Corporate decision makers, and even some two-bit entrepreneurs like my boss at The Maids, occupy an economic position miles above that of the underpaid people whose labor they depend on. For reasons that have more to do with class - and often racial - prejudice than with actual experience, they tend to fear and distrust the category of people from which they recruit their workers. Hence the perceived need for repressive management and intrusive measures like drug and personality testing. But these things cost money - $20,000 or more a year for a manager, $100 a pop for a drug test, and so on - and the high cost of repression results in ever more pressure to hold wages down. The larger society seems to be caught up in a similar cycle: cutting public services for the poor, which are sometimes referred to collectively as the 'social wage,' while investing ever more heavily in prisons and cops. And in the larger society, too, the cost of repression becomes another factor weighing against the expansion or restoration of needed services. It is a tragic cycle, condemning us to ever deeper inequality, and in the long run, almost no one benefits but the agents of repression themselves. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I couldn't help noticing that the existential space in which a friend had earnestly advised me to 'confront [my] mortality' bore a striking resemblance to the mall. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Yes. I think the anti-Wal-Mart is Costco, which pays much better and has much better health benefits and which is profitable and offers low prices. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
If I get incensed about some injustice, you can't make me - I will not just going to sit at my desk, at my computer all the time. I - I might want to march out on that. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I was an answer-seeking machine, in love with what I called "the truth," whether it came in the form of little truth particles stuck to the pages of books or vast patterns screaming out from the obvious and mundane. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
In sci-fi convention, life-forms that hadn't developed space travel were mere prehistory
horse-shoe crabs of the cosmic scene
and something of the humiliation of being stuck on a provincial planet in a galactic backwater has stayed with me ever since. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
No culture on earth outside of mid-century suburban America has ever deployed one woman per child without simultaneously assigning her such major productive activities as weaving, farming, gathering, temple maintenance, and tent-building. The reason is that full-time, one-on-one child-raising is not good for women or children. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
In matters of the heart as well, a certain level of negativity and suspicion is universally recommended. You may try to project a thoroughly positive outlook in order to attract a potential boyfriend, but you are also advised to Google him. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Given the cultural barriers to intersex conversation, the amazing thing is that we would even expect women and men to have anything to say to each other for more than ten minutes at a stretch. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
In fact the "mask" theme has come up several times in my background reading. Richard Sennett, for example, in "The Corrosion of Character: The Personal Consequences of Work in the New Capitalism", and Robert Jackall, in "Moral Mazes: The World of Corporate managers", refer repeatedly to the "masks" that corporate functionaries are required to wear, like actors in an ancient Greek drama. According to Jackall, corporate managers stress the need to exercise iron self-control and to mask all emotion and intention behind bland, smiling, and agreeable public faces.
Kimberly seems to have perfected the requisite phoniness and even as I dislike her, my whole aim is to be welcomed into the same corporate culture that she seems to have mastered, meaning that I need to "get in the face" of my revulsion and overcome it. But until I reach that transcendent point, I seem to be stuck in an emotional space left over from my midteen years: I hate you; please love me. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I smoke. It's expensive. It's also the best option. You see, I am always, always exhausted. It's a stimulant. When I am too tired to walk one more step, I can smoke and go for another hour. When I am enraged and beaten down and incapable of accomplishing one more thing, I can smoke and feel a little better, just for a minute. It is the only relaxation I am allowed. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
In fact, there is clear evidence of black intellectual superiority: in 1984, 92 percent of blacks voted to retire Ronald Reagan, compared to only 36 percent of whites. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I haven't seen much socially redeeming about religion. I'm an atheist. I don't here want to get into the Hitchens- or Dawkins-style attack on religion. I was raised on that. It's boring. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
That's the really neat thing about Dan Quayle, as you must have realized from the first moment you looked into those lovely blue eyes: impeachment insurance. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
There hasn't been a serious life-style trend since the couch potato was sighted, in about 1986, on one of its rare forays to the video store. Cocooning remains a significant mass enterprise, encouraged by the availability of five hundred new cable channels and microwavable popcorn. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
So why do people keep on watching? The answer, by now, should be perfectly obvious: we love television because television brings us a world in which television does not exist. In fact, deep in their hearts, this is what the spuds crave most: a rich, new, participatory life. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
My aim here was much more straightforward and objective - just to see whether I could match income to expenses, as the truly poor attempt to do every day. Besides, I've had enough unchosen encounters with poverty in my lifetime to know it's not a place you would want to visit for touristic purposes; it just smells too much like fear. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Whenever people can access deities directly without the intervention of a religious hierarchy, they don't need to have hierarchy so much. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I complain to one of my fellow servers that I don't understand how she can go so long without food. "Well, I don't understand how you can go so long without a cigarette," she responds in a tone of reproach. Because work is what you do for others; smoking is what you do for yourself. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Breast cancer, I can now report, did not make me prettier or stronger, more feminine or spiritual. What it gave me, if you want to call this a "gift," was a very personal, agonizing encounter with an ideological force in American culture that I had not been aware of before - one that encourages us to deny reality, submit cheerfully to misfortune, and blame only ourselves for our fate. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
At Wal-Mart, a co-worker once advised me that, although I had a lot to learn, it was also important not to "know too much," or at least never to reveal one's full abilities to management, because "the more they think you can do, the more they'll use you and abuse you." My mentors in these matters were not lazy; they just understood that there are few or no rewards for heroic performance. The trick lies in figuring out how to budget your energy so there'll be some left over for the next day. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
What I have to face is that 'Barb,' the name on my ID tag, is not exactly the same person as Barbara. 'Barb' is what I was called as a child, and still am by my siblings, and I sense that at some level I'm regressing. Take away the career and the higher education, and maybe what you're left with is this original Barb, the one who might have ended up working at Wal-Mart for real if her father hadn't managed to climb out of the mines. So it's interesting, and more than a little disturbing, to see how Barb turned out - that she's meaner and slyer than I am, more cherishing of grudges, and not quite as smart as I'd hoped. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The conventional term is "mystical experience," meaning something that by its very nature lies beyond the reach of language, except for some vague verbal hand-wavings about "mystery" and "transcendence." As far as I was concerned - as a rationalist, an atheist, a scientist by training - this was the realm of gods and fairies and of no use to the great human project of trying to retain a foothold on the planet for future generations. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I think it's tragic that we have this human capacity, which appears to be hardwired, or so the evolutionary biologists say, for collective joy. We have these techniques for generating it that go back thousands of years, and yet we tend not to use this. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
A thing cannot be conscious without having agency, but it can have agency without being conscious. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Without people around, furniture has nothing to do but bear witness to the structural inadequacies of the human body: How much padding, cushioning, embracing, enfolding, and supporting we had needed just to stumble about through our days! ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
People tend to judge presidents on how the economy performs, and yet we don't expect them to have the power to do much about it. Or we don't want them to exercise that power, if they were to have it. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I was raised the old-fashioned way, with a stern set of moral principles: Never lie, cheat, steal or knowingly spread a venereal disease. Never speed up to hit a pedestrian or, or course, stop to kick a pedestrian who has already been hit. From which it followed, of course, that one would never ever
on pain of deletion from dozens of Christmas card lists across the country
vote Republican. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The Ten Commandments, for example, were no more challenging than the Girl Scout oath, and why should anyone be tempted to put one false god ahead of another? ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Yes, I think especially the Pentecostal churches, you know, that there's been such a growth in Pentecostalism. And it's a rejection of the much more dour and barren kind of Calvinist worship and also, the very formal Catholic forms of worship. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
By the Reagan era, the 'culture of poverty' had become a cornerstone of conservative ideology: poverty was caused not by low wages or a lack of jobs but by bad attitudes and faulty lifestyles. The poor were dissolute, promiscuous, prone to addiction and crime, unable to 'defer gratification' or possibly even set an alarm clock. The last thing they could be trusted with was money. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
Someone has to puncture the prevailing fiction that we're a "family" here, we "associates" and our "servant leaders," held together solely by our commitment to the "guests." After all, you'd need a lot stronger word than dysfunctional to describe a family where a few people get to eat at the table while the rest - the "associates" and all the dark-skinned seamstresses and factory workers worldwide who make the things we sell - lick up the drippings from the floor: psychotic would be closer to the mark. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The feminist anti-pornography movement, no less than the feminist movement of a century ago, encourages the assumption that male and female sexuality, and possibly morality, are as unlike as yin and yang. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
We are reaching the point, if we have not passed it already, where the largest public housing program in America will be our penitentiary system. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I became a student of the history of religion. I am fascinated by how religions often center on mystical experience, and in the Old Testament tradition you find flames, the burning bush. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
A lot of what we experience as strength comes from knowing what to do with weakness.
Nickel and Dimed On (Not) Getting By in America ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The media have just buried the last yuppie, a pathetic creature who had not heard the news that the great pendulum of public consciousness has just swung from Greed to Compassion and from Tex-Mex to meatballs ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
If we want developed societies with women doctors, political leaders, teachers, bus drivers, and computer programmers, we will need qualified people to give loving care to their children. And there is no reason why every society should not enjoy such loving paid child care. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The only truly new ideas [the right] has come up with in the last twenty years are (1) supply side economics, which is a way of redistributing the wealth upward toward those who already have more than they know what to do with, and (2) creationism, which is a parallel idea for redistributing ignorance out from its fundamentalist strongholds to those who know more than they need to. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I first started asking big questions when I was 12, and by big questions, I mean, 'Why are we here? What is this business? We're alive for a few short decades and then poof, we're out of here.' ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
For anyone worn down, The Impossible Will Take a Little While is a bracing double cappuccino. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
In our culture, the professional, and largely white, middle class is taken as a social norm - a bland and neutral mainstream - from which every other group or class is ultimately a kind of deviation. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
