And the touch of her own mask, at first cool and clammy leather, but quickly like a second skin, and the play it gives her, herself a stage, her every breath a performance, and yet (herein lies the magic) also and entirely true. Every game, every lie flirting and cruel - and the house is full of them, games and lies - is real as knives, for the masquerade has come to define the night. The false face of everyday, that hides reality beneath flesh and skin, is itself hidden beneath the fantasy that, because it is a product and reflection of the mind, is an honest facade. Sadie has lived a wary, defensive life, always urged by that self-preserving instinct to stay small, hidden, safe. She did not know she had an imp inside her until she wore it on her face.

("One Of The Hungry Ones") ~ Holly Phillips
Masks quotes by Holly Phillips
No specter assails us in more varied disguises than loneliness, and one of its most impenetrable masks is called love. ~ Arthur Schnitzler
Masks quotes by Arthur Schnitzler
There's another issue here - and I have some limits as to what I can say - but there's some real question as to the viability of the chemical masks, the protective gear used by our soldiers. ~ Christopher Shays
Masks quotes by Christopher Shays
But because she was not a girl now, she was not awed, but only wondered at how men ordered their world into this dance of masks, and how easily a woman might learn to dance it. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Masks quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
It's easier for the former masters to put aside the masks that hid their humanity than for the former slaves to recognise the faces underneath. Or to trust that this is not a new mask these are wearing. ~ Nadine Gordimer
Masks quotes by Nadine Gordimer
Masks are what they seem to be; not so the faces beneath them. ~ Mason Cooley
Masks quotes by Mason Cooley
The Manuka honey face mask is another favorite of mine that I actually do. I know there are these people that recommend crazy masks, and I'm like, 'There is no way you're putting that on your face!' But I do put Manuka honey on my face. I take a teaspoon and warm it up. ~ Michelle Phan
Masks quotes by Michelle Phan
Tell them there are no holes for your fingers in the masks of men. Tell them how could you ever even hope to love what you can't grab onto. ~ David Foster Wallace
Masks quotes by David Foster Wallace
It is Jesus that The Proverbs 31 Lady seeks when she dreams of happiness; He is waiting for her when nothing else she finds satisfies her; He is the beauty to which she is so attracted to; it is He who provoked her with that thirst for fullness that will not let her settle for compromise; it is He who urges her to shed the masks of a false life; it is He who reads in her heart her most genuine choices, the choices that others try to suppress.
Do you desire to be that Lady of God? God desires a relationship with you. He's made this relationship possible by sending His Son. That inner void is filled through a relationship with the Lord. The place to start to fulfill the longing in your heart is to trust in the Lord for His salvation and allow the Holy Spirit to work within you to satisfy your thirst. As we go together to the well that never runs dry, I know the savior of our soul will meet us there. We will drink from the water of life He gives, the water that quenches our thirsty souls. ~ Mary Maina
Masks quotes by Mary Maina
I hated meatloaf. It was like something that Satan pooped out after an eternity of constipation. So I told Mom because I was honest that way. I sat back, squared my shoulders, and met her eyes, all confident-like.
Mom, meatloaf's like something that Satan pooped out after an eternity of constipation. It should be outlawed, frankly, and serving it for dinner is like child abuse and should carry with it some pretty stiff penalties. ~ Hayden Thorne
Masks quotes by Hayden Thorne
Alarm clocks were invented by fork-tongued devils disguised as gremlins wearing snake masks. ~ Amy Kathleen Ryan
Masks quotes by Amy Kathleen Ryan
They don't like being seen through: as for me I'm straight I don't join their act I tear masks off. ~ Simone De Beauvoir
Masks quotes by Simone De Beauvoir
I don't like raccoons. They look ... shifty, with their little burglar masks and everything. Also, they carry rabies. Can I catch rabies? Probably not. All the same, it sounds gruesome - and I think we all know that cute, fuzzy woodland creatures are not to be trusted on general principle. ~ Cherie Priest
Masks quotes by Cherie Priest
Totem poles and wooden masks no longer suggest tribal villages but fashionable drawing rooms in New York and Paris. ~ Mason Cooley
Masks quotes by Mason Cooley
Are you sincere? Are you yourself? Are you as you look? You don't have a mask on your face? You speak what you think? Then you are real, then you are not fake! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Masks quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
I quit my day job the day my daughter was born. I remember flying to Cleveland and hitting a thunderstorm, which caused the plane to lose pressure, and the oxygen masks fell from the ceiling. We felt the plane dropping; the pilot was taking it down to regain cabin pressure. My heart was in my stomach. I found out after landing that her mom was in labor. I did the show and came back to New York. By the time I walked into the hospital, my daughter was being born. She was waiting for me. She's a sweet daddy's girl. She's premed. She has her own pie company. She works for Habitat for Humanity. ~ J. B. Smoove
Masks quotes by J. B. Smoove
What a sad and frightening time it was. Thousands of firefighters and other rescue workers swarmed the sixteen-acre disaster zone, searching for survivors. The area, which became known as Ground Zero, was extremely dangerous. Underground fires smoldered, and the smoke was a toxic mix of melted plastic, steel, lead, and many poisonous chemicals. Few of the rescue workers had on proper protective clothing or masks. And as it quickly became clear, there were not very many survivors to find. Only fourteen people were pulled out of the rubble alive, all within the first twenty-four hours of the collapse. About 50,000 people had been working in the buildings that day. Two thousand and sixteen died. Also among the dead: 343 firefighters and 60 police officers who were in or near the ~ Lauren Tarshis
Masks quotes by Lauren Tarshis
Come, friends.
Come with your grief.
Come with your loss.
Carry all the pieces of your heart
and come sit with us.
Bring your disappointments
and your failures.
Bring your betrayals
and your masks.
We welcome you no matter
where you come from
and what you bring.
Come and join us
at the intersection of
acceptance and forgiveness
where you will find our
house of love.
Bring your empty cups
and we will have a feast. ~ Kamand Kojouri
Masks quotes by Kamand Kojouri
A mask you ask? Optional I find!
Masks lend appeal of a mysterious kind. ~ E.A. Bucchianeri
Masks quotes by E.A. Bucchianeri
Faces may be hard to read because humans are complex social animals that have learned to suppress the display of emotions for various reasons. It is often inappropriate to show negative emotions like hatred and contempt in public, so people go about wearing socially acceptable faces rather like masks. ~ Glen Wilson
Masks quotes by Glen Wilson
Edmund Clowney observes that prayer involves an honesty that has no real parallel in human relationships, because every human relation necessarily involves only a part of your personality. We relate differently to our spouse, our business partner, and a chance acquaintance on the street because each of our social roles expresses only a part of our personhood. Even our spouse sees only part of who we are. "In relation to God, however, we are 'naked and pinned down' (Heb 4:13). Our masks are gone, pretense is useless: the relationship is not partial, but total. All that we are stands related to our Maker and Redeemer."245 ~ Timothy J. Keller
Masks quotes by Timothy J. Keller
women and mothers, there is so much pressure to be everything to everybody that we often become a slave to the expectations that we've placed on ourselves. For the sake of the story, I will call these self-imposed expectations and roles "masks." We have all worn these masks at one time or another, and it's important to recognize what masks you wear so that you can work on shedding them later in the book. ~ Patrina Wisdom
Masks quotes by Patrina Wisdom
But that is the way of life, and that was but one of the first times, among no few to come, that I was taught a useful lesson about how appearances trump truth, and how villains hide their vices behind masks of piety, honour, and decency. And that to denounce evildoers without proof, attack them with weapons, trust blindly in reason or justice, is often the fastest road toward one's own perdition, while the scoundrels who use influence or money as a shield remained untouched. ~ Arturo Perez Reverte
Masks quotes by Arturo Perez Reverte
There was a closet somewhere inside me. Every day I went near that just to open the door and see all the masks of my face that I hid there.
To select one which isn't me but still would look like me, which would hide me from the world in a better way. Day after day I stored so many masks in that closet that one day I searched for my real face in it and it wasn't there. I never understood whether I lost it or I forgot how it looked like, the more I searched the most lost I felt. ~ Akshay Vasu
Masks quotes by Akshay Vasu
Artificial glamor-false eyelashes, that sort of thing-usually is put on to hide a vacuum. The most beautiful face can only look vacuous if it masks an empty head. ~ Peter Ustinov
Masks quotes by Peter Ustinov
She was not crying
Which surprised me very much
But I understand now
That she had found places
For her melancholy
That were behind more masks
Than only her eyes ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
Masks quotes by Jonathan Safran Foer
Then I could not help wondering what the watching gods thought of us, with our clever masks and our jokes. What we think of crickets, perhaps, whose singing we hear with pleasure, though some of us smash them with our heels when they venture into sight. ~ Gene Wolfe
Masks quotes by Gene Wolfe
Don't you know that a midnight hour comes when everyone has to take off his mask? Do you think life always lets itself be trifled with? Do you think you can sneak off a little before midnight to escape this? ~ Soren Kierkegaard
Masks quotes by Soren Kierkegaard
Tristan grabs my chin and pulls it toward him and then we're ripping off our masks and kissing, his lips so soft and yet moving fiercely against mine. I wrap a hand around the back of his head, lace my fingers through his hair, breathe him in, kiss him back. My heart blossoms. ~ David Estes
Masks quotes by David Estes
Masks camouflage the faces of both good and evil.
Keeps hidden what is a truth and what is a lie. ~ Patti Roberts
Masks quotes by Patti Roberts
When we were younger, my cousins used to jump in front of cars with masks on and start dancing really funny or making funny moves and the people in the cars would start laughing. ~ Leo Santa Cruz
Masks quotes by Leo Santa Cruz
Masks are the order of the day - and the least I can do is cultivate the illusion that I am gay, serene, not hollow and afraid. ~ Sylvia Plath
Masks quotes by Sylvia Plath
These people know the reality and laugh at it. Such laughter has little concern with what is funny. It is often bitter and sometimes a little mad, for it is the laugh under the mask of tragedy, and also the laughter that masks tears. They are the same. It is the laughter of people who value love and friendship and plenty, who have lived with terror and death and hate. - , Return to Laughter (1954) ~ Elenore Smith Bowen
Masks quotes by Elenore Smith Bowen
Meditation will drop all the masks. It is a search for the original face. ~ Rajneesh
Masks quotes by Rajneesh
The world is changing from day to day; it is high time for our writers to take off their masks, look frankly, keenly, and boldly at life, and write about real flesh and blood. It is high time for a brand-new arena for literature, high time for some bold fighters to charge headlong into battle! ~ Lu Xun
Masks quotes by Lu Xun
Humility has nothing to do with depreciating ourselves and our gifts in ways we know to be untrue. Even "humble" attitudes can be masks of pride. Humility is that freedom from our self which enables us to be in positions in which we have neither recognition nor importance, neither power nor visibility, and even experience deprivation, and yet have joy and delight. It is the freedom of knowing that we are not in the center of the universe, not even in the center of our own private universe. ~ David F. Wells
Masks quotes by David F. Wells
On Halloween I like to scare up business the old fashioned way: with flyers, business cards, and electroshock therapy while wearing spooky masks. ~ Jarod Kintz
Masks quotes by Jarod Kintz
Community [is] a group of individuals who have learned how to communicate honestly with each other, whose relationships go deeper than their masks of composure, and who have developed some significant commitment to "rejoice together, mourn together," and to "delight in each other, make others' conditions our own. ~ M. Scott Peck
Masks quotes by M. Scott Peck
The removing of the 'tangles'is a process of liberation from our complexes and illusions and from the way in which we identify with the roles we play in life, with the masks within us and with our idols, etc. It is a 'release' according to the etymology of the word, a liberation and awakening of hidden potential. ~ Roberto Assagioli
Masks quotes by Roberto Assagioli
Being watched in the act of coitus is disconcerting, even for the most brazen. Yet, more than merely making the experience tolerable, masks reveal an innate longing to play to the crowd, to be naked, sweating, screaming in orgasm. ~ Chloe Thurlow
Masks quotes by Chloe Thurlow
Everybody put on masks, including you and me. We all wear masks. ~ Ama H. Vanniarachchy
Masks quotes by Ama H. Vanniarachchy
And he now knew with certainty that the world was hollowed of its wonder by knowledge and travel, that when one stripped away the mysteries, its dimensions collapsed rather than bloomed. Of course, the world was a much more sophisticated place to him now than it had been when he was a child, but it was also far simpler. Everywhere
men grasped and grasped, as though the titles "king," "shriah," and "grandmaster" were simply masks worn by the same hungry animal. Avarice, it seemed to him, was the world's only dimension. ~ R. Scott Bakker
Masks quotes by R. Scott Bakker
I love that I am but one of millions of single girls hitting the road by themselves these days. A hateful little ex-boyfriend once said that a houseful of cats used to be the sign of a terminally single woman, but not it's a house full of souvenirs acquired on foreign adventures. He said it derogatorily: Look at all of this tragic overcompensating in the form of tribal masks and rain sticks. But I say that plane tickets replacing cats might be the best evidence of women's progress as a gender. I'm damn proud of us. Also, since I have both a cat and a lot of foreign souvenirs, I broke up with that dude and went on a really great trip. ~ Kristin Newman
Masks quotes by Kristin Newman
Night after night, through years of performing and directing, I've stood in awe of the audience, of its capacity for response. As if by magic, masks fall away, faces become vulnerable, receptive. Filmgoers do not defend their emotions, rather they open to the storyteller in ways even their lovers never know, welcoming laughter, tears, terror, rage, compassion, passion, love, hate
the ritual often exhausts them. ~ Robert McKee
Masks quotes by Robert McKee
People use masks in public and then wonder why their personal life, their relationships, don't work. If you're not being honest with others, there's nothing real about yourself to learn and, the wider the gap, the deeper the suffering. The heart wasn't meant to be closed in a box made of fake feelings and thoughts. ~ Robin Sacredfire
Masks quotes by Robin Sacredfire
We wait all these years to find someone who understands us, I thought, someone who accepts us as we are, someone with a wizard's power to melt stone to sunlight, who can bring us happiness in spite of trials, who can face our dragons in the night, who can transform us into the soul we choose to be. Just yesterday I found that magical Someone is the face we see in the mirror: It's us and our homemade masks. ~ Richard Bach
Masks quotes by Richard Bach
Never question yourself to satisfy the comfort of those living blindly by the false masks of life. ~ Nikki Rowe
Masks quotes by Nikki Rowe
A lot of corpses woke up every morning from their graves. Stood in front of the mirror and wore the masks which made them look alive. Stuck in the vicious circle of death. Scared to break out and scared of falling into the infinite pit of darkness, they beat down their souls that were fighting for an escape, mercilessly every day. They walked out into the world with pain, only to return back to the home, which did not feel like a home anymore, again in the night. They removed their masks in front of the mirror, stared into those empty eyes and walked back to their graves silently, with the fear of waking up again next day and with nothing to celebrate in their heart. ~ Akshay Vasu
Masks quotes by Akshay Vasu
Death changes nothing but the masks that cover our faces. ~ Kahlil Gibran
Masks quotes by Kahlil Gibran
She did not know yet how sometimes people keep parts of themselves hidden and secret, sometimes wicked and unkind parts, but often brave or wild or colorful parts, cunning or powerful or even marvelous, beautiful parts, just locked up away at the bottom of their hearts. They do this because they are afraid of the world and of being stared at, or relied upon to do feats of bravery or boldness. And all of those brave and wild and cunning and marvelous and beautiful parts they hid away and left in the dark to grow strange mushrooms - and yes, sometimes those wicked and unkind parts, too - end up in their shadow. ~ Catherynne M Valente
Masks quotes by Catherynne M Valente
Volcanic ash will be experienced in all parts of your world, as the volcanoes around your earth are simultaneously activated. Face masks and goggles will be of great value ~ Esther Hicks
Masks quotes by Esther Hicks
As actors, we get to hide. You can change your hair and your accent, and it's not you. You have tricks, these masks. ~ Moran Atias
Masks quotes by Moran Atias
European starvation was rather more cunning and wore a series of clever masks: death came by drink, by tuberculosis, by the knife, by despair in all its manifestations. ~ Alan Furst
Masks quotes by Alan Furst
The irony of life is that those who wear masks often tell us more truths than those with open faces. ~ Marie Lu
Masks quotes by Marie Lu
Horror is the removal of masks. ~ Robert Bloch
Masks quotes by Robert Bloch
Rice
Greyness masks the giving sun,
Cool air snakes between my thighs,
Dragonflies alight in heeded flight,
As monsoon floods the paddy's eyes.
I step barefoot on the spongy mud
Which tugs back upon my sole
My journey etched in reddish clay
Mapped out from source to goal.
Winds murmur of a change of plan
And unveil the playful sun.
I put new footprints in my footprints
And begin again where I've begun. ~ Beryl Dov
Masks quotes by Beryl Dov
As masks are the sign that there are faces, words are the sign that there are things. And these things are the sign of the incomprehensible. ~ Marcel Schwob
Masks quotes by Marcel Schwob
What I have always found most beautiful in the theatre, in my childhood, and still today, is lustre
a beautiful object, luminous, crystalline, complex, circular, symmetrical. However, I do not absolutely deny the value of dramatic literature. Only, I should like the actors to be mounted on high pattens, to wear masks more expressive than the human face, and to speak through megaphones. ~ Charles Baudelaire
Masks quotes by Charles Baudelaire
In the Empire, the Scholars are not allowed to read and, like so many bullies and power-seekers who hide behind ideologies to justify the terrible things they do, their oppressors wear masks. 'An Ember in the Ashes' suggests that such masks (literal or figurative) don't work. Not forever, anyway. Masks only cover faces. It's actions that show who we are. ~ Chelsey Philpot
Masks quotes by Chelsey Philpot
I've heard youngsters use some of George Lucas' terms––"the Force and "the dark side." So it must be hitting somewhere. It's a good sound teaching, I would say.

The fact that the evil power is not identified with any specific nation on this earth means you've got an abstract power, which represents a principle, not a specific historical situation. The story has to do with an operation of principles, not of this nation against that. The monster masks that are put on people in Star Wars represent the real monster force in the modern world. When the mask of Darth Vader is removed, you see an unformed man, one who has not developed as a human individual. What you see is a strange and pitiful sort of undifferentiated face.

Darth Vader has not developed his humanity. He's a robot. He's a bureaucrat, living not in terms of himself but of an imposed system. This is the threat to our lives that we all face today. Is the system going to flatten you out and deny you your humanity, or are you going to be able to make use of the system to the attainment of human purposes? How do you relate to the system so that you are not compulsively serving it? . . . The thing to do is to learn to live in your period of history as a human being ...[b]y holding to your own ideals for yourself and, like Luke Skywalker, rejecting the system's impersonal claims upon you.

Well, you see, that movie communicates. It is in a language that talks to young people, and that's what ~ Joseph Campbell
Masks quotes by Joseph Campbell
In the final scene of Power, the Supreme Court justices appear as a striking abstraction: Nine scowling masks line up in a row on top of a giant podium. Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes speaks the majority opinion: 'Water power, the right to convert it into electric energy, and the electric energy thus produced constitute property belonging to the United States. ~ Susan Quinn
Masks quotes by Susan Quinn
There are boys you look at and want to touch with your mouth, and there are boys you look at and want to wear one of those surgical masks everyone in China had during bird flu. There are a lot more bird-flu boys at large. ~ Laini Taylor
Masks quotes by Laini Taylor
No one reveals himself as he is; we all wear a mask and play a role.

- On Psychology ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
Masks quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
I winced. I just said "creamed." I felt so deprived and miserably virginal. ~ Hayden Thorne
Masks quotes by Hayden Thorne
There are people in this world who can wear whale masks and people who cannot, and the wise know to which group they belong. ~ Tom Robbins
Masks quotes by Tom Robbins
A mask tempts the wearer to play out carnal fantasies and, come daylight, the perfume of a stranger's sex on your flesh and clothes can be blamed or thanked on the metamorphosis stirred by the mystery of the mask. ~ Chloe Thurlow
Masks quotes by Chloe Thurlow
Not all happy memories real, as long as masks covering the faces of the perpetrators !!! ~ Omar Luati
Masks quotes by Omar Luati
I had a great experience working with Dynamite on Masks, and had just gotten started on a stint on The Shadow with them when they floated the idea of a Captain Action series. I've been a little obsessed with the character since I was first introduced to him in the pages of Amazing Heroes back in the early 1980s. ~ Chris Roberson
Masks quotes by Chris Roberson
And that was what all the expressions felt like - masks. I didn't believe them. They were too thorough, too nuanced; they were never at odds with his subject matter. ~ Helen Oyeyemi
Masks quotes by Helen Oyeyemi
Young people, who are still uncertain of their identity, often try on a succession of masks in the hope of finding the one which suits them
the one, in fact, which is not a mask. ~ W. H. Auden
Masks quotes by W. H. Auden
As you recover, you will find yourself letting go of many of your negative beliefs. You will discover that many of the so-called truths you were raised with and forced to believe are not truths at all. With this perspective, you will come to see, for example, that the names you were called as a child are simply not true. You are not 'stupid,' 'lazy,' 'ugly,' or a 'liar'. You can discover just who you really are. You can let go of your pretenses and masks and discover who the real person is underneath. ~ Beverly Engel
Masks quotes by Beverly Engel
It was a dance of masks and every mask was perfect because every mask was a real face and every face was a
real mask so there was no mask and there was no face for there was but one dance in which there was but
one mask but one true face which was the same and which was a thing without a name which changed and
changed into itself over and over. ~ Leonard Cohen
Masks quotes by Leonard Cohen
There's something about New York City that gives you permission to just be. There's no need for pretense, no need for masks. You can be real, without risk. The buildings are your protectors, the streets are your tethers. The people ... you will never see them again. Even when they're right in front of you, you don't see them. Not really. Just as they don't really see you. New York is beautifully anonymous. ~ Jessica Verdi
Masks quotes by Jessica Verdi
If marriage is a masquerade, there is the very real danger that masks may slip. The ~ Joyce Carol Oates
Masks quotes by Joyce Carol Oates
Countless human beings wear masks which they hope will cover up what they dislike about themselves. ~ Eugene Kennedy
Masks quotes by Eugene Kennedy
People are more complicated than the masks they wear in society. ~ Robert Greene
Masks quotes by Robert Greene
The New York Times published the guest list on the front page. The masks were a brilliant concept. ~ George Plimpton
Masks quotes by George Plimpton
The brain had its own food on which it battened, and the imagination,
made grotesque by terror, twisted and distorted as a living thing by pain,
danced like some foul puppet on a stand and grinned through moving masks. ~ Oscar Wilde
Masks quotes by Oscar Wilde
The problem with wearing masks is even when we receive love, it's really the mask that is receiving the love, not us. Whatever gets thrown at us will always hit the mask and can't penetrate our souls. So it is with God's grace. Every second of every day he pursues us and offers grace, but until we take off our masks, we will never be able to accept it. ~ Jefferson Bethke
Masks quotes by Jefferson Bethke
...all cynicism masks a failure to cope. ~ John Fowles
Masks quotes by John Fowles
He needed her so badly, to reassure himself of his
own existence, that he never comprehended the desperation in her dazzling, permanent smile, the terror in the brightness with which she faced the world, or the reasons why she hid when she couldn't manage to beam ... every moment she
spent in the world was full of panic, so she smiled and smiled and maybe once a week she locked the door and shook and felt like a husk, like an empty peanut-shell, a monkey without a nut. ~ Salman Rushdie
Masks quotes by Salman Rushdie
I look after my skin quite a lot because in this job, it can get stressful. Pimples come out! I cleanse and moisturize, sometimes do face masks. I've also got a Clarisonic, which is good. ~ Jess Glynne
Masks quotes by Jess Glynne
Are there any other questions?"
I cleared my throat. "Yeah," I replied, raising my voice. "Can I get paid for being the repeat victim in these practice runs? It's not easy, you know, getting tied up or stuffed inside
something, while everyone figures out what catchphrases to use when destroying people."
For a few seconds, Magnifiman was quiet. "Okay, are there any other questions?" he asked.
I sighed, my shoulders drooping. "I'll have to take this up with my union," I said. Of course, I just needed to form one. ~ Hayden Thorne
Masks quotes by Hayden Thorne
Was Briony the only person who could hear the venom dripping from the woman's tongue? What good was beauty - a mature beauty, but beauty nonetheless - if it cloaked such a viperous soul? ~ Tad Williams
Masks quotes by Tad Williams
We have now come to a quite insidious edge in contemporary tolerance discourse. By converting the effects of inequality - for example, institutionalized racism - into a matter of "different practices and beliefs," this discourse masks the working of inequality and hegemonic culture as that which produces the differences it seeks to protect. As it essentializes difference and reifies sexuality, race, and ethnicity at the level of ideas and practices, contemporary tolerance discourse covers over the workings of power and the importance of history in producing the differences called sexuality, race, and ethnicity. It casts those culturally produced differences as innate or given, as matters of nature that divide the human species rather than as sites of inequality or domination. ~ Wendy Brown
Masks quotes by Wendy Brown
And when I feel
the masks beneath
crumble and fade with
time I build new ones
to replace the old.
"Masks"- Sins Within ~ Shay Leigh
Masks quotes by Shay Leigh
He often felt that too many people lived their lives acting and pretending, wearing masks and losing themselves in the process. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Masks quotes by Nicholas Sparks
They says truth is hidden behind their masks, but I believe Truth comes out when they are masked! ~ Twinkle Varshney
Masks quotes by Twinkle Varshney
I say what I think," said the woman. "My people don't hide behind masks."
"You certainly do," said Awt, equably. "Your mask is rudeness and offensively plain speech. We only see how you wish to appear, not your true self. Mask or not, Watchman Inarakhat has been more honest than you. ~ Ann Leckie
Masks quotes by Ann Leckie
Gentleman," I purr smoothly in greeting.
Ezra and Cort circle me like sharks scenting blood. I know who they are, but not who is who since they're wearing black hoods over their heads. It covers them to the shoulder and has holes for the eyes and mouth. Their clothing is identical Italian designer label suits. Even their shoes are the same. Their eyes glow like steel ball-bearings from the safety of their masks. The mouths are different- one serious, one snarky- both ruby-red and kissable.
While they circle Fate and me several times taking our measure, the other Master stands in a sphere of his own confidence. He's older and I don't mean just in age, but knowledge. Ezra and Cortez feel like babies compared to this man. I bet he's who I really have to impress.
I wait, always meeting their eyes when their path moves them back to my face. I don't follow them with my gaze- I wait.
"Hello," the hood with the serious lips speaks in a smooth deep tone. I know it's not his true voice, but the one Kris calls The Boss. His eyes are kind and assessing.
No one pays Fate any mind as she cowers at my thigh. I hold their undivided attention. Curly-locks is quiet- watchful- a predator sighting its quarry. Snarky mouth is leering at my chest and I smirk. Caught ya, Cortez Abernathy.
"I seem to be at a disadvantage conversing with you while you're hooded. I can't see you, but you can see me." I try to get them to out themselves. It's a longshot.
"And who are ~ Erica Chilson
Masks quotes by Erica Chilson
Tucked in the back of one of the shelves is a small bottle, rounded with a short neck and closed with a matching glass stopper. He picks it up carefully. It is heavier than he had expected. Removing the stopper, he is confused, for at first the scent and the sensation do not change. Then comes the aroma of caramel, wafting on the crisp breeze of an autumn wind. The scent of wool and sweat makes him feel as though he is wearing a heavy coat, with the warmth of a scarf around his neck. There is the impression of people wearing masks. The smell of a bonfire mixes with the caramel. And then there is a shift, a movement in front of him. Something grey. A sharp pain in his chest. The sensation of falling. A sound like howling wind, or a screaming girl. ~ Erin Morgenstern
Masks quotes by Erin Morgenstern
Yet, if I were to adhere to my mom's advice, I would have had to drop out of school years ago (since a lot of folks in our inequitable education system refuse to love us), quit engaging public health offices (because I walked in as a human in need of medical services and walked out as a patient whose subjective world was mad invisible by research lingo: "MSM," otherwise known as "men who have sex with men'), sleep in my bed all damn day (knowing it is more likely that I would be stopped by police when walking to the store in Camden or Bed-Stuy while rocking a fitted cap and carrying books than my white male neighbors would be while walking around in ski masks in the middle of summer and dropping a dime bag on the ground in front of a walking police and his dog)... ~ Kiese Laymon
Masks quotes by Kiese Laymon
I'll be your mess, you be mine
That was the deal that we had signed
I bought a hazmat suit to clean up your waste
Gas masks, gloves, to keep us safe
But now I'm alone in an empty room
Staring down immaculate doom
Messy ~ Gayle Forman
Masks quotes by Gayle Forman
he couldn't see me breaking apart because I had mastered masks for so many years and he was believing it.
And for once in my life, I wished someone would see right through my lies. That he would spare me this hurt. ~ R. Scarlett
Masks quotes by R. Scarlett
One group is singing in the middle of the grass, still wearing their masks. Their voices blend beautifully but with all their swaying and kicking of debris, they look more like drunken pirates after a raid. ~ Susan Ee
Masks quotes by Susan Ee
Nobody is one block of harmony. We are all afraid of something, or feel limited in something. We all need somebody to talk to. It would be good if we talked to each other, not just pitter patter but real talk. We shouldn't be afraid, because most people really like this contact; that you show you are vulnerable makes them free to be vulnerable too. It's so much easier to be together when we drop our masks. ~ Liv Ullmann
