This paradigm of the war on terror, connecting all kinds of armed resistance around the globe in one huge ideological framework, as a new ideology at a stage in history when most of the major ideologies are gone, does not reflect the facts on the ground. ~ Jonas Gahr Store
War History quotes by Jonas Gahr Store
In reference to the search for Lincoln's killers as it took to the Maryland swamps:
The method of searching the swamps is simple yet arduous. First, the troops assemble on the edge of bogs with names like Allen's Creek, Scrub Swamp, and Atchall's Swamp, standing at loose attention in the shade of a thick forest of beech, dogwood, and gum trees. Then they form two lines and march straight forward, from one side to the other. As absurd as it seems to the soldiers, marching headlong into cold mucky water, there is no other way of locating Booth and Herold. Incredibly, eighty-seven of these brave men will drown in their painstaking weeklong search for the killers. ~ Bill O'Reilly
War History quotes by Bill O'Reilly
World War II was a decisive time in our history and June 6, 1944, marked the decisive moment of the war. ~ Lane Evans
War History quotes by Lane Evans
Those who can win a war well can rarely make a good peace and those who could make a good peace would never have won the war. ~ Winston Churchill
War History quotes by Winston Churchill
Turing was a quite brilliant mathematician, most famous for his work on breaking the German Enigma codes. It is no exaggeration to say that, without his outstanding contribution, the history of the Second World War could have been very different. ~ Gordon Brown
War History quotes by Gordon Brown
I am imprinted with the whole sense of European history, especially German history, going back to World War I, which really destroyed all the old values and culture. My grandparents had been reasonably well-off but they became quite poor, living in an attic apartment. ~ Lisel Mueller
War History quotes by Lisel Mueller
I find I like it too much. ~ Stonewall Jackson
War History quotes by Stonewall Jackson
The greatest enthusiasts for Civil War history and memory often displace complicated consequences by endlessly focusing on the contest itself. We sometimes lift ourselves out of historical time, above the details, and render the war safe in a kind of national Passover offering as we view a photograph of the Blue and Gray veterans shaking hands across the stone walls at Gettysburg. Deeply embedded in an American mythology of mission, and serving as a mother lode of nostalgia for antimodernists and military history buffs, the Civil War remains very difficult to shuck from its shell of sentimentalism. ~ David W. Blight
War History quotes by David W. Blight
I have been blind expecting everything to stay the same. ~ Philibert Orry
War History quotes by Philibert Orry
The deliberate and deadly attacks which were carried out yesterday against our country were more than acts of terror. They were acts of war. ~ George W. Bush
War History quotes by George W. Bush
The wars of kings were over; the wars of peoples had begun. ~ Robert Roswell Palmer
War History quotes by Robert Roswell Palmer
Remembering the loss of those Irishmen from all parts of the island who were sent to their deaths in the imperialist slaughter of the First World War is crucial to understanding our history. It is also important to recognise the special significance in which the Battle of the Somme and the First World War is held. ~ Martin McGuinness
War History quotes by Martin McGuinness
We've built the largest empire in the history of the world. It's been done over the last 50 years since World War II with very little military might, actually. It's only in rare instances like Iraq where the military comes in as a last resort. ~ John Perkins
War History quotes by John Perkins
For all history up to the end of the Cold War, summit meetings were historic and dramatic occasions, when leaders who controlled the destiny of much of the world met to change the world. ~ Conrad Black
War History quotes by Conrad Black
There are certain men who are sacrosanct in history; you touch on the truth of them at your peril. These are such men as Socrates and Plato, Pericles and Alexander, Caesar and Augustus, Marcus Aurelius and Trajan, Martel and Charlemagne, Edward the Confessor and William of Falaise, St. Louis and Richard and Tancred, Erasmus and Bacon, Galileo and Newton, Voltaire and Rousseau, Harvey and Darwin, Nelson and Wellington. In America, Penn and Franklin, Jefferson and Jackson and Lee. There are men better than these who are not sacrosanct, who may be challenged freely. But these men may not be. Albert Pike has been elevated to this sacrosanct company, though of course to a minor rank. To challenge his rank is to be overwhelmed by a torrent of abuse, and we challenge him completely.

Looks are important to these elevated. Albert Pike looked like Michelangelo's Moses in contrived frontier costume. Who could distrust that big man with the great beard and flowing hair and godly glance?
If you dislike the man and the type, then he was pompous, empty, provincial and temporal, dishonest, and murderous. But if you like the man and the type, then he was impressive, untrammeled, a man of the right place and moment, flexible or sophisticated, and firm.
These are the two sides of the same handful of coins.
He stole (diverted) Indian funds and used them to bribe doubtful Indian leaders. He ordered massacres of women and children (exemplary punitive operations). He lied ~ R.A. Lafferty
War History quotes by R.A. Lafferty
Now that their long war was over, they could get on with the proper concern of all civilised nations, which is to prepare for the next one. ~ Terry Pratchett
War History quotes by Terry Pratchett
Throughout this evolution from left to right, Beard always detested war. Hence his writings were slanted to show that the military side of history was insignificant or a mere reflection of economic forces. ~ Samuel E. Morison
War History quotes by Samuel E. Morison
Part of what I loved - and love - about being around older people is the tangible sense of history they embody. I'm interested in military history, for instance, because both my grandfathers fought in World War II. I'm interested in writing because one of those grandfathers wrote books. ~ Jon Meacham
War History quotes by Jon Meacham
A radiant fellowship of the fallen. ~ Joshua Chamberlain
War History quotes by Joshua Chamberlain
Darkest of all Decembers ever has my life known, Sitting here by the embers, stunned, helpless, alone. ~ Mary Boykin Chesnut
War History quotes by Mary Boykin Chesnut
It is idle to say that nations can struggle to outdo each other in building armaments and never use them. History demonstrates the contrary, and we have but to go back to the last war to see the appalling effect of nations competing in great armaments. ~ Frank B. Kellogg
War History quotes by Frank B. Kellogg
On THE DECSIVE DUEL: SPITFIRE VS 109
The epic struggle between the Spitfire and the Messerschmitt 109 upon which so much of western civilization depended in the summer of 1940 has found the ideal biographer in David Isby. I write "biographer" because, like the men who flew these remarkable fighter planes, Isby sees them in almost human terms, transcending the mere mechanical. (Andrew Roberts, Author Of The Storm Of War ) ~ Andrew Roberts
War History quotes by Andrew Roberts
It is magnificent, but it is not war. ~ Pierre Bosquet
War History quotes by Pierre Bosquet
When you write a two thousand page history of the Second World War, the deportations and the concentration camps will take up five pages, and the gas chambers perhaps 20 lines. ~ Jean-Marie Le Pen
War History quotes by Jean-Marie Le Pen
There was the first Balkan war and the second Balkan war and then there was the first world war. It is extraordinary how having done a thing once you have to do it again, there is the pleasure of coincidence and there is the pleasure of repetition, and so there is the second world war, and in between there was the Abyssinian war and the Spanish civil war. ~ Gertrude Stein
War History quotes by Gertrude Stein
East Asia has prospered since the end of the Vietnam War, and Northeast Asia has prospered since the end of the Korean War in a way that seems unimaginable when you think of the history of the first half of the century. ~ William Kirby
War History quotes by William Kirby
It's ironic that early on in the war with Afghanistan, the Americans and the British were saying, 'We recognise there must be a Palestinian state,' then they rapidly forgot about it. I think history will show that that kind of amnesia will come back to haunt you. ~ Tom Paulin
War History quotes by Tom Paulin
When the clowns of British politics - arch-Brexiteer cartoon characters 'Boorish Johnson' and 'JackOff Grease-Smug' advocate ad infinitum that Britain should leave the EU in order to be free to sign her own trade deals; they seem to have overlooked the towering elephant in the room, namely the current occupant of the White House (another clown) - who appears hell-bent on destabilising world trade via crude protectionist policies. Both Tories, despite receiving the best British education money can buy, would do well to revisit their post war history books and be reminded of one of the key objectives of the European Project and in due course the European Union - specifically to promote peace and prosperity amongst previously warring neighbours by forming a unified trading bloc which in time, due to its effective size, also acted as a useful counterweight to US hegemony. Go find another circus for your buffoonery and leave the deadly serious business of politics to principled individuals with the true national interest at heart ! ~ Alex Morritt
War History quotes by Alex Morritt
I think that this is the first war in history that on the morrow the victors sued for peace and the vanquished called for unconditional surrender. ~ Abba Eban
War History quotes by Abba Eban
When one nation is at war with another nation, the political machine does everything it can to vilify the people of the other nation, so it makes it easier to kill them. Which is understandable and it's happened this way throughout history. ~ Alexander Siddig
War History quotes by Alexander Siddig
With the likely nominations of Barack Obama by the Democrats and John McCain by the Republicans, one of these two parties is headed for a 2009 crack-up that could prove as messy as any party civil war in recent history. ~ Chuck Todd
War History quotes by Chuck Todd
I suppose this work is part of the devil that is in us all. ~ Ulysses S. Grant
War History quotes by Ulysses S. Grant
World War One is an important part of Ireland's multi-layered history during which tens of thousands Irish people lost their lives. ~ Martin McGuinness
War History quotes by Martin McGuinness
'The Pushcart War' is presented as a history of a conflict that has not yet taken place; in each edition of the book, the date on which the hostilities commenced is nudged forward. ~ Adam Mansbach
War History quotes by Adam Mansbach
I'd been in college studying English creative writing and history when I made the decision to join the Marines in the runup to the Iraq war. ~ Phil Klay
War History quotes by Phil Klay
The history of mankind is a history of war. ~ Mike Love
War History quotes by Mike Love
We did an album one time called White Mansions, about the civil war, but it was written by a guy from England. His looking at it from over there and it not being a part of his history made it so he could be objective. ~ Waylon Jennings
War History quotes by Waylon Jennings
As a child growing up in World War II, I was very moved and stirred by what was going on, but I distanced myself from history. I regarded history as just one more subject. ~ Ann Rinaldi
War History quotes by Ann Rinaldi
While the framers of the United States Constitution were ashamed of slavery and used euphemisms in place of the term "slave", the authors of the Confederate Constitution proudly used the term no less than ten times. ~ C.L. Gammon
War History quotes by C.L. Gammon
The Establishment center ... has led us into the stupidest and cruelest war in all history. That war is a moral and political disaster - a terrible cancer eating away at the soul of our nation. ~ George McGovern
War History quotes by George McGovern
The Atlantic conference in the North Atlantic off Newfoundland is a dramatic moment in World War II history because for the first time, Roosevelt and Churchill are meeting face to face in this war. ~ Robert Dallek
War History quotes by Robert Dallek
We just held each other for warmth. I cannot recall that we even spoke to one another. Such was our shock. That day we learnt a new word - war. ~ P.J. Whittlesea
War History quotes by P.J. Whittlesea
For starters, this country embodies something utterly unique: History's first democratic empire. Beginning in the post war era, we have used free trade and democracy to create a series of interlocking relationships that end war. ~ Armstrong Williams
War History quotes by Armstrong Williams
My mom was a history teacher, so I couldn't really avoid history when I was growing up. But we're very light on American history. We don't really have great opportunities to study both the Civil War and the Revolution. ~ Owain Yeoman
War History quotes by Owain Yeoman
Whether one believes in evolution, intelligent design, or Divine Creation, one thing is certain. Since the beginning of history, human beings have been at war with each other, under the pretext of religion, ideology, ethnicity and other reasons. And no civilization has ever willingly given up its most powerful weapons. ~ Mohamed ElBaradei
War History quotes by Mohamed ElBaradei
I grew up in the South, so a huge part of our American History education revolved around the Civil War. ~ Anson Mount
War History quotes by Anson Mount
When has there ever been a government in German history that came to the people and revealed its detailed plans for the coming years? That could not happen before, since German governments planned war and conquest. ~ Walter Ulbricht
War History quotes by Walter Ulbricht
Winning the Revolutionary War, or the Civil War, or World War II were the turning points in our history, the sine qua non of our forward progress. ~ Stephen Ambrose
War History quotes by Stephen Ambrose
Now, I believe that war is never inevitable until it starts, but there has been a great proclivity in human history, and including in recent history, for war. ~ William Kirby
War History quotes by William Kirby
No country in history ever sent mothers of toddlers off to fight enemy soldiers until the United States did this in the Iraq war. ~ Phyllis Schlafly
War History quotes by Phyllis Schlafly
The power of the artform is stronger than stone, the poet says, and chooses the sonnet, a form concerned with argument and persuasion, to say so. This sonnet, he says, will last longer than any gravestone-and you'll be made shinier, brighter, by it. In this form it will-and therefore you will-avoid destruction by war, history, time generally; it'll even keep you alive after death; in fact it'll form a place for you to live, not die, where you'll be seen in the eyes of and the context of this love right to the end of time. ~ Ali Smith
War History quotes by Ali Smith
No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now. ~ Richard M. Nixon
War History quotes by Richard M. Nixon
After two world wars, the collapse of fascism, nazism, communism and colonialism and the end of the cold war, humanity has entered a new phase of its history. ~ Hans Kung
War History quotes by Hans Kung
The ceding of Alsace-Lorraine is nothing but war in perpetuity under the mask of peace. ~ Edgar Quinet
War History quotes by Edgar Quinet
The Veteran's History Project, a nationwide volunteer effort to collect oral histories from America's war veterans, provides an avenue to do just that. Now in its fifth year, the Project has collected more than 40,000 individual stories. ~ Spencer Bachus
War History quotes by Spencer Bachus
In all their wars against the French they [the Americans] never showed such conduct, attention and perseverance as they do now. ~ Thomas Gage
War History quotes by Thomas Gage
There is no glory in war, yet from the blackness of its history, there emerge vivid colours of human character and courage. Those who risked their lives to help their friends. ~ Silvia Cartwright
War History quotes by Silvia Cartwright
Many people think making a film about history ... about war ... about the Holocaust, it might be heavy, dramatic and traumatic. I don't see things like that ... you can find irony everywhere. It's how I look at life. ~ Arnon Goldfinger
War History quotes by Arnon Goldfinger
If you will remember history correctly, even the Second World War was perpetrated by a stateless actor, by murdering the Prince Rudolf, if you remember. And so is the case with 9/11. It was a stateless actor which has made the world go to war. ~ Asif Ali Zardari
War History quotes by Asif Ali Zardari
What it targets is not something that's really looked at a lot in terms of the war. This is stuff that's off the beaten path in terms of what we think of every time you start a Civil War history or a Civil War presentation. It's usually about the military and the soldiers and all that stuff. And this is not. It's the backdrop to a place and a time and circumstances that didn't have anything to do with that. ~ Gary Cole
War History quotes by Gary Cole
The point I would make is that the novelist and the historian are seeking the same thing: the truth – not a different truth: the same truth – only they reach it, or try to reach it, by different routes. Whether the event took place in a world now gone to dust, preserved by documents and evaluated by scholarship, or in the imagination, preserved by memory and distilled by the creative process, they both want to tell us how it was: to re-create it, by their separate methods, and make it live again in the world around them. ~ Shelby Foote
War History quotes by Shelby Foote
If you don't recognize your own crimes, there's no impediment to continuing them. There's a pretty dramatic example of that right at this moment. This happens to be the fiftieth anniversary of John F. Kennedy's decision to launch the war against South Vietnam. Forgetting the fiftieth anniversary of the launching of one of the major atrocities in post-Second World War history is pretty severe. But almost nobody has noticed it. I don't think we'll hear a word about it. And, yes, that opens the way to further aggression. ~ Noam Chomsky
War History quotes by Noam Chomsky
The War on Terror is one of the most critical national security efforts in our history. ~ Sue Kelly
War History quotes by Sue Kelly
Subsequently, the Japanese people experienced a variety of vicissitudes and were involved in international disputes, eventually, for the first time in their history, experiencing the horrors of modern warfare on their own soil during World War II. ~ Eisaku Sato
War History quotes by Eisaku Sato
To have been able to write the books I wanted to write, on demanding subjects like war and the history of psychiatry, and for them to have sold in the numbers they have - and then go around saying: 'Actually, I'd also like to have won the Costa Book of the Year?' That would be ridiculous. ~ Sebastian Faulks
War History quotes by Sebastian Faulks
There is a quality in the people of Dover that may well be the key to the coming German disaster. They are incorrigibly, incorruptibly unimpressed. The German, with his uniform and his pageantry and his threats and plans, does not impress these people at all. The Dover man has taken perhaps a little more pounding than most, not in great blitzes, but in every-day bombing and shelling, and still he is not impressed. Jerry is like the weather to him. He complains about it and then promptly goes on with what he was doing...Weather and Jerry are alike in that they are inconvenient and sometimes make messes. Surveying a building wrecked by a big shell, he says, "Jerry was bad last night," as he would discuss a windstorm. ~ John Steinbeck
War History quotes by John Steinbeck
After America won the Cold War, some believed we had come to the 'end of history,' and budget-cutters celebrated the so-called 'peace dividend.' As a result, we ignored the toxic mixture of militant Islam and terror that ultimately led to 9/11. ~ Frank Gaffney
War History quotes by Frank Gaffney
I think the language of sacrifice is particularly important for societies like the United States in which war remains our most determinative common experience, because states like the United States depend on the story of our wars for our ability to narrate our history as a unified story. ~ Stanley Hauerwas
War History quotes by Stanley Hauerwas
After Nixon resigned in 1974, he engaged in a very aggressive war with history, attempting to wipe out the Watergate stain and memory. Happily, history won, largely because of Nixon's tapes. ~ Bob Woodward
War History quotes by Bob Woodward
We can only imagine the history of the free world today if, at the end of the Civil War, there had been two countries: the United States and the Confederate States of America. ~ Douglas Brinkley
War History quotes by Douglas Brinkley
The idea of progress - the notion that human history is the history of human betterment - dominated the world view of the West between the Enlightenment and the First World War. ~ Jill Lepore
War History quotes by Jill Lepore
War never accomplishes anything. It's never going to look good in the history books. People are never going to look back and think, 'He started a lot of wars; what a great leader he was!' That's not the way it works. God knows how many more of these things we're going to need before it starts to sink in. ~ Alan Moore
War History quotes by Alan Moore
To be straight, I was kind of a dork, and in order to fulfill the creative fires burning inside me, I participated vigorously as a Civil War re-enactor through most of my teenage years, traveling across the country to participate in large scale reenactments - grandiose plays enacted by over weight history buffs and war enthusiasts alike. ~ Cary Fukunaga
War History quotes by Cary Fukunaga
World War II ended the Great Depression with one of the great public-private industrial collaborations in the history of man. ~ Jon Meacham
War History quotes by Jon Meacham
Britain kept its position as the dominant world power well into the 20th century despite steady decline. By the end of World War II, dominance had shifted decisively into the hands of the upstart across the sea, the United States, by far the most powerful and wealthy society in world history. ~ Noam Chomsky
War History quotes by Noam Chomsky
I love general history. That's all I read really. I don't read novels, I read history. I love it. I live in an area that's really rich in Civil War history. I live in Kentucky on a farm. A lot of revolution, a lot of military history I love. ~ Steve Zahn
War History quotes by Steve Zahn
The authors of all our misfortune. ~ Jefferson Davis
War History quotes by Jefferson Davis
Shiloh had as many casualties as Waterloo, and yet there were another 20 Waterloos to come. ~ Bruce Catton
War History quotes by Bruce Catton
All history, of course, is the history of wars. ~ Penelope Lively
War History quotes by Penelope Lively
Whatever happened in those more than one hundred years, from the time my great-great-great grandfather studied law to the time when my own father took his bar exam in 1989, I may never know. Perhaps it was just greed and the good, old-fashion corruption that comes with power. The Drexlers have moved from the fight for human rights to the fight for corporations and wealthy individuals. We file their taxes, write their contracts, clean up their messes. As I see it, we have become little more than glorified Public Relations reps ~ Gwenn Wright
War History quotes by Gwenn Wright
The Cold War in Africa is one of the darkest, most disgraceful pages in contemporary history, and everybody ought to be ashamed. ~ Ryszard Kapuscinski
War History quotes by Ryszard Kapuscinski
There's nothing anyone can do except change the subject. ~ Philibert Orry
War History quotes by Philibert Orry
No one sees clearly during a war. History gives perspective ~ Joanne Harris
War History quotes by Joanne Harris
For the first time in history, we declared war without financing it. Americans have not been asked to pay for it through taxes. ~ David Broder
War History quotes by David Broder
Hell is full of polite men with bone saws. ~ Miles Watson
War History quotes by Miles Watson
World War II is the greatest drama in human history, the biggest war ever and a true battle of good and evil. I imagine writers will continue to get stories from it, and readers will continue to love them, for many more years. ~ Ken Follett
War History quotes by Ken Follett
The fall of the Berlin Wall is very much a sequel, a continuation of the story about Eastern Europe emerging from war and Communism. The notion of presenting history as a story also appealed to me very much, since that is the way I look at the events I cover as a reporter. ~ Serge Schmemann
War History quotes by Serge Schmemann
Richmond's newspaper questioned how a senior general could not even get two of his own generals to cooperate with him. They nicknamed him "Granny" Lee or "The King Of Spades," because he insisted that his men dig trenches on Sewell Mountain. ~ Clint Johnson
War History quotes by Clint Johnson
Hard pounding, gentlemen. Let's see who pounds the longest. ~ Duke Of Wellington
War History quotes by Duke Of Wellington
The Confederate Constitution was almost identical to that of the United States. ~ Bruce Catton
War History quotes by Bruce Catton
The United Nations was founded in the aftermath of World War II, just as the world was beginning to learn the full horrors of history's worst genocide, the Holocaust that consumed 6 million Jews and 3 million others in Europe. ~ Linda Chavez
War History quotes by Linda Chavez
American policy seems to be wed to a perpetual state of war. Why? History shows that the world will always be in flux or turmoil, with different peoples competing for visibility and power. The U.S. cannot fix the fate of every nation. ~ Camille Paglia
War History quotes by Camille Paglia
A trillion dollars spent, 2,000 American lives lost - Afghanistan is the longest war in American history. But you don't hear a word about it. ~ Michael Baumgartner
War History quotes by Michael Baumgartner
The story of FDR as U.S. Commander in Chief is a heroic war story of a president who had already overcome great adversity in facing polio but who went on to take the reins of our armed forces in the greatest conflagration in human history - on our behalf. ~ Nigel Hamilton
War History quotes by Nigel Hamilton
The great Gaels of Ireland are the men that God made mad,
For all their wars are merry, and all their songs are sad. ~ G.K. Chesterton
War History quotes by G.K. Chesterton
Finally, Europe's post-war history is a story shadowed by silences; by absence. The continent of Europe was once an intricate, interwoven tapestry of overlapping languages, religions, communities and nations. Many of its cities - particularly the smaller ones at the intersection of old and new imperial boundaries, such as Trieste, Sarajevo, Salonika, Cernovitz, Odessa or Vilna - were truly multicultural societies avant le mot, where Catholics, Orthodox, Muslims, Jews and others lived in familiar juxtaposition. We should not idealise this old Europe. What the Polish writer Tadeusz Borowski called 'the incredible, almost comical melting-pot of peoples and nationalities sizzling dangerously in the very heart of Europe' was periodically rent with riots, massacres and pogroms - but it was real, and it survived into living memory.
Between 1914 and 1945, however, that Europe was smashed into the dust. The tidier Europe that emerged, blinking, into the second half of the twentieth century had fewer loose ends. Thanks to war, occupation, boundary adjustments, expulsions and genocide, almost everybody now lived in their own country, among their own people. For forty years after World War Two Europeans in both halves of Europe lived in hermetic national enclaves where surviving religious or ethnic minorities the Jews in France, for example - represented a tiny percentage of the population at large and were thoroughly integrated into its cultural and political mainstream. Only Yugos ~ Tony Judt
War History quotes by Tony Judt
The least likely of military leaders, Joan of Arc changed the course of the Hundred Years' War and of history. ~ Kathryn Harrison
War History quotes by Kathryn Harrison
The president led us into the Iraq war on the basis of unproven assertions without evidence; he embraced a radical doctrine of pre-emptive war unprecedented in our history; and he failed to build a true international coalition. ~ Nancy Pelosi
War History quotes by Nancy Pelosi
My ancestors include Monahwee, who was one of the leaders in the Red Stick War, which was the largest Indian uprising in history, and Osceola, who refused to sign a treaty with the United States. ~ Joy Harjo
War History quotes by Joy Harjo
The history of humanity is not the history of its wars, but the history of its households. ~ John Ruskin
