Maybe the difference between speech and music isn't all that great. We infer a lot from the tone of someone's voice, so imagine that aspect of speech pushed just a little further. The weird cadences of a Valley girl, for instance, might be viewed as a species of singing. The malls of Sherman Oaks are a setting for a kind of massed choir. ~ David Byrne
Valley Girls quotes by David Byrne
Derek, if a boy wanted to take away a girl's power by having sex with her, what would you think about it?"
"I'd break something. His leg. Maybe his arm." He squeezed the wire tighter. "Probably wouldn't kill him unless he wanted to make an issue of it. ~ Ilona Andrews
Valley Girls quotes by Ilona Andrews
Why don't boys like girls as they are?' 'They bore easy cause the so deadhead. Sometimes they want you mami, sometimes sis, sometimes lovergirl. You game with boys you got to know who you are and not let them tell you'. ~ Jack Womack
Valley Girls quotes by Jack Womack
A dormitory was a hopeless idea. Whoever thought of encasing two hundred girls in a concrete box? ~ Nathan Hill
Valley Girls quotes by Nathan Hill
Girls just want to have fun. Well, so do old ladies! ~ Joan Rivers
Valley Girls quotes by Joan Rivers
I DIDN'T KNOW what a date was and I wasn't an anomaly. Most of the girls I knew didn't get asked out on dates. People got together through alcohol and a process of elimination. ~ Stephanie Danler
Valley Girls quotes by Stephanie Danler
Well, I guess I picked wrong then. Jesse doesn't like girls. ~ Holly Hood
Valley Girls quotes by Holly Hood
XI
I sang his name instead of song;
Over and over I sang his name:
Backward and forward I sang it along,
With my sweetest notes, it was still the same!
I sang it low, that the slave-girls near
Might never guess, from what they could hear,
That all the song was a name. ~ Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Valley Girls quotes by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
It is never a happy day when an eight-year-old girl's cheesecake lands in the dirt, and she certainly doesn't take kindly to the laughing little boy who put it there. ~ Kristi Ann Hunter
Valley Girls quotes by Kristi Ann Hunter
I turn to head outside when the boys make their way back into the house. Kel stops in the doorway and puts his hands on his hips, then looks up at me.
"Are you my sister's boyfriend?"
I'm thrown off by his directness. I pull my jacket on and shake my head. "Um, no. Just her friend."
"She told my mom you were taking her on a date. I thought only boyfriends took girls on dates."
"Well," I pause. "Sometimes boys take girls on dates to see if they want them to be their girlfriend."
I notice Caulder standing beside me, taking in the conversation as if he's just as curious. I wasn't prepared to have to explain the rules of dating right now.
"So it's like a test?" Caulder asks. "To see if you want Layken to be your girlfriend?"
I shrug and nod. "Yeah, I guess you could say that."
Kel laughs. "You aren't gonna like her. She burps a lot. And she's bossy. And she never lets me drink coffee, so she probably won't let you have any, either. And she has really bad taste in music and sings way too loud and leaves her bras all over the house. It's gross."
I laugh. "Thanks for the warning. You think it's too late to back out now?"
Kel shakes his head, missing my sarcasm completely. "No, she's already dressed so you have to take her now."
I sigh, pretending to be annoyed. "Well, it's just a few hours. Hopefully she won't burp a lot and boss me around and steal my coffee and sing to her really bad music and leave her bra in my car."
Colleen Hoover
Valley Girls quotes by Colleen Hoover
Well, you know what grown-ups are,' said Dinah. 'They don't think the same way as we do. I expect when we grow up, we shall think like them - but let's hope we remember what it was like to think in the way children do, and understand the boys and the girls that are growing up when we're men and women. ~ Enid Blyton
Valley Girls quotes by Enid Blyton
Like the ski resort of girls looking for husbands and husbands looking for girls, the situation is not as symmetrical as it might seem. ~ Alan McKay
Valley Girls quotes by Alan McKay
Have you found it different having girls in the house?"
He cleared his throat. "Oh, yeah."
"Would you care to elaborate?"
"Nope."
I looked up from my writing. "If you don't elaborate, it's going to be a very short article."
"Look, I've already gotten into it once tonight--"
"Are you implying I'm hard to live with? Is that why you won't comment further? Because you think I'll be offended? I won't be."
"No further comment."
I sighed, tempted to toss the recorder at him.
"Okay, then, we'll move on. What's been the most difficult aspect of living with us?"
There was silence, but it was the kind where you can sense someone wants to speak but doesn't. Jason was so incredibly still, as though he was weighing consequences.
"Not kissing you," he finally said, quietly.
My heart did this little stutter. I just stared at him as the recorder continued to run, searching for sound. My hand was shaking when I reached over and turned it off.
"But you did kiss me, and you said it was a mistake."
"Because getting involved with you is a bad idea, on so many levels."
"Care to share one of those levels?"
"I'm living in your house. Your parents are giving me a roof over my head. Your mom brings home extra takeout. I'm here only for the summer. Then I'm back at school." He reached up, removed the ice pack from around his shoulder, and set it on the table. "And Mac? After we went to Dave and Bubba's, he comes out to the ~ Rachel Hawthorne
Valley Girls quotes by Rachel Hawthorne
I knew, for instance, that rooms where people slept exuded peculiarly human smells just as the goat pen smelt goaty and the cattle kraal bovine. It was common knowledge among the younger girls at school that the older girls menstruated into sundry old rags which they washed and reused and washed again. I knew, too, that the fact of menstruation was a shamefully unclean secret that should not be allowed to contaminate immaculate male ears by indiscreet reference to this type of first in their presence. ~ Tsitsi Dangarembga
Valley Girls quotes by Tsitsi Dangarembga
Her eyes take on that suspicious, wounded look girls get when they know they've fallen off the top rung of friendship and someone else has passed them, but they don't know when or how the change took place. ~ Libba Bray
Valley Girls quotes by Libba Bray
I'm pretty, but I'm not beautiful. I sin, but I'm not the devil. I'm good, but I'm not an angel. ~ Mariyn Monroe
Valley Girls quotes by Mariyn Monroe
Girls were always my biggest distraction in school. ~ Channing Tatum
Valley Girls quotes by Channing Tatum
Look, girls know when they're cute," he said. "You don't have to tell them. All they need to do is look in the mirror. I have one friend out in New York, an attorney. She moved out there after the school year to take the bar. She doesn't have a job. I was like, 'How are you going to get a job there in this market?' And she's like, 'I'll wink and I'll smile.' She's a pretty girl. Whether that works despite her poor grades is yet to be seen. ~ Daniel Amory
Valley Girls quotes by Daniel Amory
Dedication: For all the girls who walk and read at the same time. ~ Tessa Dare
Valley Girls quotes by Tessa Dare
On my days off I pick up our chicken's eggs. My wife and I have five chickens called The Spice Girls. Five lovely chicks. And no, we won't be eating any of them for Christmas dinner. ~ John Nettles
Valley Girls quotes by John Nettles
Oh, sorry. My excitement must be clouding my ability to judge comedic hyperbole. ~ Daniel Palladino
Valley Girls quotes by Daniel Palladino
I think when you're a bigger star you get many good scripts sent to you, and you have to choose which one you're going to gravitate toward, but I just try to gravitate toward the best-written one that's been thrown my way after a lot of girls have passed on it. ~ Amanda Peet
Valley Girls quotes by Amanda Peet
She cried because she'd had such high, high hopes about the Wheelers tonight and now she was terribly, terribly, terribly disappointed. She cried because she was fifty six years old and her feet were ugly and swollen and horrible; she cried because none of the girls had liked her at school and none of the boys had liked her later; she cried because Howard Givings was the only man who'd ever asked her to marry him, and because she'd done it, and because her only child was insane. ~ Richard Yates
Valley Girls quotes by Richard Yates
We stand, when we are young, on the sunny slope among the pines, and look across an unknown country to the mountains. There are clouds, but they are edged with light. We do not fear as we dip into the valley; we do not fear the clouds. Thank God for the splendid fearlessness of youth. And as for older travelers whom the Lord has led over the hill and the dale, they have not been given the spirit of fear. They think of the way they have come since they stood on that bright hillside, and their word is always this: There are reasons and reasons for hope and for happiness, and never one for fear. ~ Amy Carmichael
Valley Girls quotes by Amy Carmichael
There's always this problem in society where people know they need these places for social peace, but the fundamentalists want to shut them down. Sometimes that's for economic reasons, because they want to build a supermarket there. The imam will hold a prayer and say let's get rid of the girls, but on the other hand they're all going there. ~ Michael Glawogger
Valley Girls quotes by Michael Glawogger
Code-switching in these spaces is a key skill that not everyone can or will acquire. And the toll of not being adept at this skill plays out not only in how girls are treated by their peers but also in how they are treated by the systems they encounter. A girl who is seen as fitting into the patriarchy's preset mold of a "good girl," one who won't engage in any of that pesky interest in herself, her own goals and concerns, but who is instead seemingly willing to be directed, will often find herself offered more resources by teachers, employers, or other people with power to effect a positive change in her life. A counterpart who is messier, louder, and more invested in being true to herself and where she came from, no matter how much that self departs from accepted ideas of a "good girl," is unlikely to benefit from the same resources. ~ Mikki Kendall
Valley Girls quotes by Mikki Kendall
What's your name?"
"Emma Gould," she said. "What's yours?"
"Wanted."
"By all the girls or just the law? ~ Dennis Lehane
Valley Girls quotes by Dennis Lehane
I wrote all the lyrics on 'Good Vibrations' and most of them in 'Kokomo.' 'Kokomo' was extremely popular and fun to sing - it's probably one of the bigger sing-along songs in our show. But then 'Help Me Rhonda,' 'Surfin' USA' and 'California Girls' and 'I Get Around' and 'Fun, Fun, Fun' are great songs as well. ~ Mike Love
Valley Girls quotes by Mike Love
...I'm trying to tell ya something bout my life,,maybe give me insight between black and white,,and the best thing you'd ever done for me is to help me take my life less seriously--it's only LIFE afterall... ~ Indigo Girls
Valley Girls quotes by Indigo Girls
When he smelled battle afar off, Winston Churchill resembled the war horse in Job who turned not back from the sword, but 'paweth in the valley and saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha.' He was the only British minister to have a perfectly clear conviction of what Britain should do and to act upon it without hesitation. ~ Barbara W. Tuchman
Valley Girls quotes by Barbara W. Tuchman
The thing about fashion, my dears, is that you don't need to follow it, no matter what they say. No fashion trend is compulsory, remember - and if you dress too much in the style of the moment, it makes you look like a nervous person. Paris is all well and good, but we can't just follow Paris for the sake of Paris, now can we? ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Valley Girls quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
I grew up with 'Jane Eyre,' reading it at school, and it's one of those, I think, for a lot of women, a lot of girls, it's the iconic story and so many girls relate to Jane Eyre and her character. ~ Sally Hawkins
Valley Girls quotes by Sally Hawkins
They are children, Sansa thought. They are silly little girls, even Elinor. They've never seen a battle, they've never seen a man die, they know nothing. Their dreams were full of songs and stories, the way hers had been before Joffrey cut her fathers head off. Sansa pitied them. Sansa envied them. ~ George R R Martin
Valley Girls quotes by George R R Martin
Give me the money that has been spent in war and I will clothe every man, woman, and child in an attire of which kings and queens will be proud. I will build a schoolhouse in every valley over the whole earth. I will crown every hillside with a place of worship consecrated to peace. ~ Charles Sumner
Valley Girls quotes by Charles Sumner
Besides, my drinking blood's not nearly as weird as that time I caught you shaving your legs."
"I was curious! ~ Molly Harper
Valley Girls quotes by Molly Harper
They thought they had snicker-snatched a little girl - fairies love taking little girls, it's like an addiction with them - and when they found out they had a little boy who just looked like a little girl on the outside, uh-oh, donesies. They threw him right back. ~ Seanan McGuire
Valley Girls quotes by Seanan McGuire
I was walking ahead of our little group and, as the Wallace princesses approached, I stepped off the sidewalk into the dew-dampened grass to let them pass. Aunt Belle saw this; she hurried up to me and asked, "Why did you get off the walk when you met those girls?" I replied, as if it should have been clear to anyone, "Because they are the prettiest girls in town! And I didn't want them to get their feet wet!" Aunt Belle grabbed me above the right elbow with both of her hands and shook me until I actually saw blue stars, roughly pushed me back onto the sidewalk, and growled between clenched teeth, emphasizing each word: "DON'T YOU EVER, EVER GET OFF THE SIDEWALK FOR ANYONE! YOU ARE AS PRETTY AS ANYONE! DO YOU UNDERSTAND? ~ Mildred Armstrong Kalish
Valley Girls quotes by Mildred Armstrong Kalish
No event "creates" another event, but is merely a preceding link in the great orderly chain of events flowing from the creative energy of THE ALL. There is a continuity between all events precedent, consequent and subsequent. There is a relation existing between everything that has gone before, and everything that follows. A stone is dislodged from a mountain side and crashes through a roof of a cottage in the valley below. At first sight we regard this as a chance effect, but when we examine the matter we find a great chain of causes behind it. In the first place there was the rain which softened the earth supporting the stone and which allowed it to fall; then back of that was the influence of the sun, other rains, etc., which gradually disintegrated the piece of rock from a larger piece; then there were the causes which led to the formation of the mountain, and its upheaval by convulsions of nature, and so on ad infinitum. Then we might follow up the causes behind the rain, etc. Then we might consider the existence of the roof. In short, we would soon find ourselves involved in a mesh of cause and effect, from which we would soon strive to extricate ourselves. ~ Three Initiates
Valley Girls quotes by Three Initiates
Egypt is a fertile valley of rich river soil, low-lying, warm, monotonous, a slow-flowing river, and beyond the limitless desert. Greece is a country of sparse fertility and keen, cold winters, all hills and mountains sharp cut in stone, where strong men must work hard to get their bread. And while Egypt submitted and suffered and turned her face toward death, Greece resisted and rejoiced and turned full-face to life. For somewhere among those steep stone mountains, in little sheltered valleys where the great hills were ramparts to defend, and men could have security for peace and happy living, something quite new came into the world: the joy of life found expression. Perhaps it was born there, among the shepherds pasturing their flocks where the wild flowers made a glory on the hillside; among the sailors on a sapphire sea washing enchanted islands purple in a luminous air. ~ Edith Hamilton
Valley Girls quotes by Edith Hamilton
You need your beauty sleep for tomorrow"
she tells us "don't stay up too late talking"
We ignore her of course. The whole point of a sleepover is to stay up too late talking. ~ Heather Vogel Frederick
Valley Girls quotes by Heather Vogel Frederick
it was one of the frickin' Golden Girls: ~ J.R. Ward
Valley Girls quotes by J.R. Ward
I was such a tomboy when I was young. I hated girls' clothes. ~ Suki Waterhouse
Valley Girls quotes by Suki Waterhouse
Her laughter sounded like music. "What, you don't hang out with missionaries in your downtime? When the rest of us go home and slip into sweatpants and T-shirts, you kick back in a polo shirt and khakis."
No one but Isaiah and Beth teased me. People ran from me. Yet this little nymph thoroughly enjoyed this game. "Keep it up, Echo. I'm all about foreplay."
She laughed so loudly, she slapped a hand over her mouth, yet the giggles escaped. "You are so full of yourself. You think because girls swoon over you and let you into their pants on the first try that I'll follow suit. Think again. Besides, I have your number now. Every time you try to look all dark and dangerous, I'll picture you wearing a pink striped polo, collar up, and a pair of pleated chinos." ~ Katie McGarry
Valley Girls quotes by Katie McGarry
It was a real treat when he'd read me Daisy Miller out loud. But we'd reached the point in our relationship when, in a straight choice between him and Henry James, I'd have taken Henry James any day even if Henry James were dead and not much of a one for the girls when living, either. ~ Angela Carter
Valley Girls quotes by Angela Carter
Go ahead, you guys. I'm not done with Kim yet."
Braden made annoying kissing noises while Michelle giggled.
"Fine with me," Kim said. He pulled his shirt over his head and threw it to the ground. Sweat glistened on the tight muscles of his chest. Standing under the orange glow of the setting sun, he looked like a golden statue brought to life.
"That's not fair." I struggled to swallow past the sudden dryness of my tongue. "That's distracting."
He flashed me a grin that ignited a fire low inside me. "That would be the point. Call it a tactical move."
Braden used the tree to pull himself up. "Well, boys and girls, I think it's time we moved along. This fight is about to lose its PG-13 rating."
Michelle nudged him in the side. "I think it's cute."
Something prickled on the back of my neck and I turned to find Quentin staring at me with a look between confusion and pain. As I tried to decipher its meaning, Kim used that moment to snatch my wrist and twist it behind my back. He pulled me in, pinning me against his chest, and lowered his head to place a kiss just below my ear.
"I may need to take notes." Braden pretended to open an invisible notebook. "So, what do you call this martial arts style, Kim? Kung fu-ling around? How about jujits-you-some? ~ Cole Gibsen
Valley Girls quotes by Cole Gibsen
At the end, what I like is that it's the girl's decision to go back in the room. She needs a hug, she wants a hug, she asks for a hug and he gives it to her. For me, it's like an act of resistance to go there and to transgress the taboo and to do what started the whole thing in the beginning. It was supposedly a hug that started this whole drama between the character of Simon and the teacher. ~ Philippe Falardeau
Valley Girls quotes by Philippe Falardeau
They were not asked to adhere to the same rules. If there were countless guidelines women had to follow; cover your drink, stick close to others, don't wear short skirts. Their behaviour was the constant, while we were the variable expected to change. When did it become our job to do all the preventing and managing? And if houses existed where many girls got hurt, shouldn't we hold guys to a higher standard instead of reprimanding the girl? Why was passing out considered more reprehensible than fingering the passed out person? ~ Chanel Miller
