...Though it may not be a suitable comment for even this confidential record, I thought, by no means for the first time in such surroundings, what an odd way it was for people of opposite sexes to spend the evening, when, after all, there was nothing ahead that any of us could be sure of but infirmity, illness, and death. ~ Robert Aickman
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Aickman
democratic theory is concerned with processes by which ordinary citizens exert a relatively high degree of control over leaders; ~ Robert A. Dahl
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert A. Dahl
Self-forgiveness comes when we realize that if God has forgiven us, we needn't remain angry with ourselves, needn't hate ourselves any longer. God will use it all for good. ~ Robert Morgan
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Morgan
I'm not feisty. But when you're as small as I am and female if you don't stand up for your rights, you're sure to be pushed around by big, hairy, smelly men with delusions about male superiority. ~ Robert A. Heinlein
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert A. Heinlein
You will learn to make better decisions in life with experience and time. ~ Robert Tew
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Tew
They will, on the one hand, have sex with just about anything that moves, given an easy chance, like males in a low-MPI species. On the other hand, when it comes to finding a female for a long-term joint venture, discretion makes sense; males can undertake only so many ventures over a lifetime, so the genes that the partner brings to the project - genes for robustness, brains, whatever - are worth scrutinizing. The ~ Robert Wright
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Wright
Here's why the life of Muhammad [and Jesus] matters: Contrary to what many secularists would have us believe, religions are not entirely determined (or distorted) by the faithful over time. The lives and words of the founders remain central, no matter how long ago they lived. The idea that believers shape religion is derived, instead, from the fashionable 1960s philosophy of deconstructionism, which teaches that written words have no meaning other than that given to them by the reader. Equally important, it follows that if the reader alone finds meaning, there can be no truth (and certainly no religious truth); one person's meaning is equal to another's. Ultimately, according to deconstructionism, we all create our own set of "truths," none better, or worse than any other.
Yet for the religious man or woman on the streets of Chicago, Rome, Jerusalem, Damascus, Calcutta, and Bangkok, the words of Jesus, Moses, Muhammad, Krishna, and Buddha mean something far greater than any individual's rendering of them. And even to the less-than-devout reader, the words of these great religious leaders are clearly not equal in their meaning. ~ Robert Spencer
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Spencer
And Olvos said:
"Nothing is ever truly lost
The world is like the tide
Returning, for an instant, to the place it occupied before
Or leaving that same place once more
Celebrate, then, for what you lose shall be returned
Smile, then, for all good deeds you do shall be visited upon you
Weep, then, for all ills you do shall return to you
Or your children, or your children's children
What is reaped is what is sown.
What is sown is what is reaped."
Book of the Red Lotus,
Part IV, 13.51-13.61 ~ Robert Jackson Bennett
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Jackson Bennett
While confronting the problems of the present, I often find myself thinking back to the world of books as it was experienced by the Founding Fathers and the philosophers of the Enlightenment. ~ Robert Darnton
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Darnton
Ambitious intelligence [is] a force that can demolish the 'heart's reasons' - namely, a warm empathy, a considerateness toward others, a willingness, even, to let them become one's teachers, however humble or troubled their lives. ~ Robert Coles
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Coles
Blue uniforms are real. Cops are a social fiction ~ Robert Anton Wilson
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Anton Wilson
What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail? ~ Robert H. Schuller
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert H. Schuller
We're taught Lord Acton's axiom: all power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. I believed that when I started these books, but I don't believe it's always true any more. Power doesn't always corrupt. Power can cleanse. What I believe is always true about power is that power always reveals. ~ Robert Caro
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Caro
I have begotten them and I have reared them but I have no comments to make and no advice to give. I do not know if I have done them good or ill. I do not know whether, in their own generation, they will do well or badly; I cannot even guess whether they will build because of me or in spite of me. I know only that they will build elsewhere, and that I have here no continuing city. I can barely live with my children, yet I must shortly and inconceivably live without them. I have hardly known them, hardly begun to walk in the streets of their minds and the gardens of their pleasures, hardly explored with them the city that they are, and already they begin to go their ways and to take my city with them. My exile comes implacably. By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept when we remembered thee O Sion. If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth. I am absurd, I know; but it is the infirmity in which I glory. ~ Robert Farrar Capon
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Farrar Capon
Be wary when people tell you that they don't produce a lot, but when they do, it will be "brilliant." Remember that innovation is largely a function of productivity. ~ Robert I. Sutton
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert I. Sutton
Unarmed hand-to-hand fighting does not change through the ages; only the name changes, and it has only one rule: do it first, do it fast, do it dirtiest. ~ Robert A. Heinlein
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert A. Heinlein
Why is it that we go to immense lengths getting the Serbs who were responsible for the massacre of 7,000 at Srbrenica - that's slightly more than the total figure for New York - and we take them to a tribunal in The Hague, and one after another, we arraign them, try them, convict them, and punish them in front of the world, but no plans have been brought forward to get bin Laden and his friends and put them on trial? ~ Robert Fisk
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Fisk
Space in typography is like time in music. It is infinitely divisible, but a few proportional intervals can be much more useful than a limitless choice of arbitrary quantities. ~ Robert Bringhurst
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Bringhurst
To have ideas one must have imagination. To express ideas one must have science. ~ Robert Henri
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Henri
A man is not his body, for he receives his body accidentally. He is not his skills, for those are frequently born of necessity. He is not his talents, which are produced by heredity and by early environmental factors. He is not the sicknesses to which he may be predisposed, and he is not the environment that shapes him. A man contains all these things, but he is greater than their total. ~ Robert Sheckley
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Sheckley
The earth has been cultivated before it has been divided; the cultivation itself having been the only motive for a division, and for that law which secures to every one his property. For the first persons who have employed themselves in cultivation, have probably worked as much land as their strength would permit, and, consequently, more than was necessary for their own nourishment. ~ Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot, Baron De Laune
Robert Aikman quotes by Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot, Baron De Laune
I know there are a lot of readers that think I've got a very crappy marriage just because of the things going on with Rick and Lori but there's really nothing that's been like a mirror. I'm just making this stuff up. ~ Robert Kirkman
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Kirkman
My quest for cosmic understanding is a book I have picked up and put down many times, always forgetting to insert a bookmark. ~ Robert Breault
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Breault
If we must live with a perpetual sense that the world and the men in it are greater than we and too much for us, let it be the measure of our virtue that we know this and seek no comfort. ~ J. Robert Oppenheimer
Robert Aikman quotes by J. Robert Oppenheimer
What guarantees - or at least semi-guarantees - good ballets is good choreographers, and they are thin on the ground. ~ Robert Gottlieb
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Gottlieb
If you are operating in a certain way and you are thinking in a certain direction, suddenly opportunities arise. And if you are open to it, if you are not locked into your style too much or to what you think works. ~ Robert Barry
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Barry
If you make listening and observation your occupation you will gain much more than you can by talk. ~ Robert Baden-Powell
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Baden-Powell
The absolute necessity to create a proper Earth government' - we should inscribe this as the priority item on the agenda of world affairs. ~ Robert Muller
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Muller
Language is the square hole we keep trying to jam the round peg of life into. It's the most insane thing we do. ~ Robert Coover
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Coover
The kingdom of God is that invisible collection of committed Christians that transcends cultures, ideologies ... and creeds- all bound by the golden commitment to say nothing and do nothing that would attack the self-esteem, the self-respect, and the dignity of any other human being, whether or not they are committed members of the kingdom of God. The dignity of the person then is the irreducible cell of true Christianity. ~ Robert H. Schuller
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert H. Schuller
Remember all the people in your life who helped guide you on your road to success. Thank them sincerely and often. ~ Robert Cheeke
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Cheeke
There is a percentage of people who want to be a little bit outside their comfort zone and I am one of them, someone who lives on the edge. ~ Alain Robert
Robert Aikman quotes by Alain Robert
The French are a logical people, which is one reason the English dislike them so intensely. The other is that they own France, a country which we have always judged to be much too good for them. ~ Robert Morley
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Morley
Why don't we all just get really baked on weed? ~ Robert Smith
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Smith
But first Hitler, taken in by Mussolini's mythmaking, attempted a "march" of his own. On November 8, 1923, during a nationalist rally in a Munich beer hall, the Bürgerbräukeller, Hitler attempted to kidnap the leaders of the Bavarian government and force them to support a coup d'état against the federal government in Berlin. He believed that if he took control of Munich and declared a new national government, the Bavarian civil and military leaders would be forced by public opinion to support him. He was equally convinced that the local army authorities would not oppose the Nazi coup because the World War I hero General Ludendorff was marching beside him.

Hitler underestimated military fidelity to the chain of command. The conservative Bavarian minister-president Gustav von Kahr gave orders to stop Hitler's coup, by force if necessary. The police fired on the Nazi marchers on November 9 as they approached a major square (possibly returning a first shot from Hitler's side). Fourteen putschists and four policemen were killed. Hitler was arrested and imprisoned,8 along with other Nazis and their sympathizers. The august General Ludendorff was released on his own recognizance. Hitler's "Beer Hall Putsch" was thus put down so ignominiously by the conservative rulers of Bavaria that he resolved never again to try to gain power through force. That meant remaining at least superficially within constitutional legality, though the Nazis never gave up the selective violence t ~ Robert O. Paxton
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert O. Paxton
A paunchy man with a face the color of corned beef, ~ Robert Galbraith
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Galbraith
For every look at self, take 10 looks at Christ. ~ Robert Murray M'Cheyne
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Murray M'Cheyne
No economy can continue to function when the vast middle class and everybody else don't have enough purchasing power to buy what the economy is capable of producing without going deeper and deeper into debt. ~ Robert Reich
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Reich
He was a soldier. He was a shepherd. He was a beggar, and a king. He was a farmer, gleeman, sailor, carpenter. He was born, lived, and died Aiel. He died mad, he died rotting, he died of sickness, accident, age. He was executed, and multitudes cheered his death. He proclaimed himself the Dragon Reborn and flung his banner across the sky; he ran from the Power and hid; he lived and died never knowing. He held off the madness and the sickness for years; he succumbed between two winters. Sometimes Moiraine came and took him away from the Two Rivers, alone or with those of his friends who had survived Winternight; sometimes she did not. Sometimes other Aes Sedai came for him. Sometimes Red Ajah. Egwene married him; Egwene, stern-faced in stole of Amyrlin Seat, led Aes Sedai who gentled him; Egwene, with tears in her eyes, plunged a dagger into his heart, and he thanked her as he died. He loved other women, married other women. Elayne, and Min, and a fair-haired farmer's daughter met on the road to Caemlyn, and women he had never seen before he lived those lives. A hundred lives. More. So many he could not count them. And at the end of every life, as he lay dying, as he drew his final breath, a voice whispered in his ear. I have won again, Lews Therin. Flicker. ~ Robert Jordan
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Jordan
No one ever committed suicide while reading a good book, but many have tried while trying to write one. ~ Robert Byrne
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Byrne
A genius is someone who takes a complex thing and makes it look simple. An academic does the opposite. ~ Robert Fanney
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Fanney
Rocks are not static and inert. They are constantly changing, shifting, and rearranging their form and location. They can be melted, deposited, eroded and squeezed into new forms... They offer clues about the shifting, changing nature of the continents, mountain ranges, oceans and islands... When an animal or plant dies and its remains leave an impression in rock, the resulting fossil is a testament to life's history and its changing, evolving nature... Explore the fossils life has left as clues to its evolution. ~ Robert R. Coenraads
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert R. Coenraads
If you got good elective officials in your day, it was a happy accident, better than you deserved. ~ Robert A. Heinlein
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert A. Heinlein

Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl Of Lytton

Barbara [Stanwyck] was the first woman I ever loved. ~ Robert Wagner
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Wagner
In a democracy, supposedly we hold power by what we do at the ballot box, so therefore the more we know about political power the better our choices should be and the better, in theory, our democracy should be. ~ Robert Caro
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Caro
I think you can be contemporary without taking your clothes off. ~ Robert Helpmann
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Helpmann
I don't know much about contemporary music. I do have an iPod but I listen to a lot of old blues. I listen to John Lee Hooker and Elmore James. I have been listening to them for years. I was obsessed with Van Morrison for years. I went to see him recently where he performed Astral Weeks. I just spent the entire night crying, but I was really obsessed with Van Morrison. ~ Robert Pattinson
Robert Aikman quotes by Robert Pattinson
