We are particularly frustrated that so much of our politics today consists of lines first written during the clashes, domestic and foreign, of the 1960s. This "Groundhog Day" approach to replaying the culture war's tropes is perhaps nowhere in greater evidence than in how Americans talk about patriotism. Patriotism, as an idea, has been co-opted over the course of a generation by right-wingers who use the flag not as a symbol of transcendent national unity, but as a sectarian cudgel against the hippies, Francophiles, free-lovers and tree-huggers who constitute their caricature of the American left. The American left, for its part, has been so beaten down by this star-spangled caricature that it has largely ceded the very notion of patriotism to the right. As a result, the first reaction of far too many progressives to any talk of patriotism is automatic, allergic recoil. Needless to say, this reaction simply tightens the screws of the right's imprisoning caricature. ~ Eric Liu
Groundhog Day quotes by Eric Liu
I've killed myself so many times, I don't even exist anymore. ~ Bill Murray
Groundhog Day quotes by Bill Murray
My desire to self-destruct is a one-night stand
on Groundhog Day.
Fucking repetitive. Repetitively fucking. ~ Kris Kidd
Groundhog Day quotes by Kris Kidd
One of my favorite comedies is 'Groundhog Day' and 'Scrooged.' I love Bill Murray, and I think he's a great example of an actor who is funny. ~ Fiona Gubelmann
Groundhog Day quotes by Fiona Gubelmann
We left home, married, had children of our own, found the seeds of meanness blooming also within us. Dad began dresssing the pole with more complexity and less discernible logic. He draped some kind of fur over it on Groundhog Day and lugged out a floodlight to ensure a shadow. ~ George Saunders
Groundhog Day quotes by George Saunders
I came to London to make my dreams come true - big, naive head on me at twenty-two. Going to work every day physically hurts.' I hadn't realised how strongly I felt about my lack of a career, my Groundhog Day existence, until I uttered those last two words and realised I wasn't exaggerating. A kind of agony wrapped me in its razor-edged wires every day as I cycled to the Sugar Pot, to Kenneth and to my hideaway cupboard; it was dull, like my skin was smeared with a strong numbing cream. ~ Melanie Murphy
Groundhog Day quotes by Melanie Murphy
In Sliding Doors, the whole idea is that every choice you make, and every single thing that happens to you changes the trajectory of your life, and once you are put on that trajectory, there is no way back. But Groundhog Day - which, I tell him, also happens to be a much better movie - says the opposite. It says if you mess up or make the wrong choice, you just have to keep at it until you do it right. ~ David Levithan
Groundhog Day quotes by David Levithan
We can't heal what we don't feel. We can't have a future until we fully inhabit our present. It's like the proverbial Groundhog Day. Most people don't live 70-90 years; they live the same year 70-90 times because they keep regurgitating an incomplete present. ~ Derek Rydall
Groundhog Day quotes by Derek Rydall
If you were offered the chance to live your own life again, would you seize the opportunity? The only real philosophical answer is automatically self-contradictory: 'Only if I did not know that I was doing so.' To go through the entire experience once more would be banal and Sisyphean - even if it did build muscle - whereas to wish to be young again and to have the benefit of one's learned and acquired existence is not at all to wish for a repeat performance, or a Groundhog Day. And the mind ought to, but cannot, set some limits to wish-thinking. All right, same me but with more money, an even sturdier penis, slightly different parents, a briefer latency period ... the thing is absurd. I seriously would like to know what it was to be a woman, but like blind Tiresias would also want the option of re-metamorphosing if I wished. How terrible it is that we have so many more desires than opportunities. ~ Christopher Hitchens
Groundhog Day quotes by Christopher Hitchens
You might be a redneck if you celebrate Groundhog Day because you believe in it. ~ Jeff Foxworthy
Groundhog Day quotes by Jeff Foxworthy
My days are straight out of the movie Groundhog Day. ~ Mark Cuban
Groundhog Day quotes by Mark Cuban
Your perpetual loop of teen angst? Or as you put it, your own personal episode of 'Dawson's Creek' playing over and over, like a demented 'Groundhog Day'? ~ Josie Leigh
Groundhog Day quotes by Josie Leigh
I've had some really big hits with 'Groundhog Day' and 'Michael,' 'Multiplicity,' 'Four Weddings and a Funeral.' ~ Andie MacDowell
Groundhog Day quotes by Andie MacDowell
Alas! must it ever be so? Do we stand in our own light, wherever we go, And fight our own shadows forever? ~ Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl Of Lytton
Groundhog Day quotes by Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl Of Lytton
'Groundhog Day' was one of the greatest scripts ever written. It didn't even get nominated for an Academy Award. ~ Bill Murray
Groundhog Day quotes by Bill Murray
With a whistle of the wind,
And an icy snow flurry.
Off to Gobbler's Knob,
Come now let us hurry!

It is February second!
Groundhog's Day!
We need some prognostication,
On this cold winter's day.

Happy Groundhog Day to you!
Punxsutawney Phil, do come out of your cave!
For whether you cast a fair shadow, or no shadow you see on this day!

We send many warm wishes,
Of good tidings and cheer!
For when it is Groundhog's Day,
Springtime is surely near! ~ L.K. Merideth
Groundhog Day quotes by L.K. Merideth
Sometimes it feels like it's show after show after show - like it's 'Groundhog Day,' and you feel like you're lost in the system. ~ Chet Faker
Groundhog Day quotes by Chet Faker
Now, I have the opportunity to catch more balls and I relish the opportunity, ... Its something Ive always wanted. I think I needed a change. It was like Groundhog Day, doing the same thing over and over again. What better place could I be than to come to New York and try to put everybody to the side and say, This is who I am. ~ Plaxico Burress
Groundhog Day quotes by Plaxico Burress
What if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today." -- From 'Groundhog Day ~ J.M. Evenson
Groundhog Day quotes by J.M. Evenson
As I come to the end of my advice and send you off into the world, I have an alternative way for you to stay on the straight and narrow: periodically watch Groundhog Day. It was made long ago, in 1993, but it's still smart and funny, the chemistry between the stars (Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell) is terrific, and it has a happy ending. Groundhog Day is also a profound moral fable that deals with the most fundamental issues of virtue and happiness. ~ Charles Murray
Groundhog Day quotes by Charles Murray
The trouble with weather forecasting is that it's right too often for us to ignore it and wrong too often for us to rely on it. ~ Patrick Young
Groundhog Day quotes by Patrick Young
Let's be honest - Bill Murray was onto something when he laughed at Andie MacDowell's degree in 19th century French poetry in 'Groundhog Day' ~ Marco Rubio
Groundhog Day quotes by Marco Rubio
Groundhog Day was pretty clean. It may have to do with some puritanical feeling that comedy is a forbidden pleasure in a certain way. They make you laugh, and laughter is somehow an inferior emotion to tragedy. ~ Harold Ramis
Groundhog Day quotes by Harold Ramis
In one of the extras that come with the DVD version of the movie (Groundhog Day), Danny Rubin, who came up with the original idea and then wrote the script, says that the movie is about "doing what you can do in the moment to make things better instead of making them worse." Which might not sound like very much, but it's just about all you can do in life.

Which only proves that the world itself runs on Yiddish-speaking principles: the best way to get what you want and make all those bastards out there so jealous that they'll want to poke their own eyes out is to go out of your way to be nice to those bastards. That's the way to show them. That's how a mentsh gets revenge. ~ Michael Wex
Groundhog Day quotes by Michael Wex
If it all just happens like this for the rest of my life, it's going to be one endless Groundhog Day. I determined that I was not prepared to submit to this regime, so I thought I had to do something about it. ~ Bruce Dickinson
Groundhog Day quotes by Bruce Dickinson
I'm the luckiest man alive, this is the best day of my life. ~ George Strait
Groundhog Day quotes by George Strait
If Sir John A. MacDonald or any other leader of that day were here now, he would have a different program from that of sixty years ago. He sought to give his people policies suited to the time in which he lived. ~ John Bracken
Groundhog Day quotes by John Bracken
She remembers her name. She remembers the name of the president. She remembers the name of the president's dog. She remembers what city she lives in. And on which street. And in which house. The one with the big olive tree where the road takes a turn. She remembers what year it is. She remembers the season. She remembers the day on which you were born. She remembers the daughter who was born before you – She had your father's nose, that was the first thing I noticed about her – but she does not remember that daughter's name. She remembers the name of the man she did not marry – Frank – and she keeps his letters in a drawer by her bed. She remembers that you once had a husband, but she refuses to remember your ex-husband's name. That man, she calls him.

She does not remember how she got the bruises on her arms or going for a walk with you earlier this morning. She does not remember bending over, during that walk, and plucking a flower from a neighbour's front yard and slipping it into her hair. Maybe your father will kiss me now. She does not remember what she ate for dinner last night, or when she last took her medicine. She does not remember to drink enough water. She does not remember to comb her hair.

She remembers the rows of dried persimmons that once hung from the eaves of her mother's house in Berkeley. They were the most beautiful shade of orange. She remembers that your father loves peaches. She remembers that every Sunday morning, at ten, he ta ~ Julie Otsuka
Groundhog Day quotes by Julie Otsuka
No neighbourhood or district, no matter how well established, prestigious or well heeled and no matter how intensely populated for one purpose, can flout the necessity for spreading people through time of day without frustrating its potential for generating diversity. ~ Jane Jacobs
Groundhog Day quotes by Jane Jacobs
My own belief is that in most ages and in most places obscure psychological forces led men to adopt systems involving quite unnecessary cruelty, and that this is still the case among the most civilized races at the present day. ~ Bertrand Russell
Groundhog Day quotes by Bertrand Russell
I don't have many hours in a day, as I'm essentially a single parent. But fortunately, I'm a really fast writer. My goal is usually 10 pages a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but by the end of the week, I aim for at least 10,000 words. ~ Michelle Gagnon
Groundhog Day quotes by Michelle Gagnon
The world doesn't revolve around me anymore. Now it's all about this little baby. I come home after a rough day, I see her and she smiles and nothing but that matters. I know that sounds really cliche but it's the truth. ~ Michael Easton
Groundhog Day quotes by Michael Easton
Nothing will serve you better than a strong work ethic. Nothing. And it's something that you can't teach. You have to be thrown into it, where you're going to sink or swim. It's amazing how self-correcting and how clarifying a good, hard, shitty job can be. Because at the end of the day, any profession I've seen anybody in, when you peer behind the curtains of Oh, wouldn't that be a great job? Wow, what an amazing thing, a philanthropic endeavor! it really just comes down to It's a f**king grind. ~ Robert Downey, Jr.
Groundhog Day quotes by Robert Downey, Jr.
NIGHTINGALE AND I did what all good coppers do when faced with a spare moment in the middle of the day - we went looking for a pub. ~ Ben Aaronovitch
Groundhog Day quotes by Ben Aaronovitch
Does this mean you're going to marry me then?"
"I've only been pestering you to marry me since the day we met, Daniel. What clued you in that I'd be interested other than that? ~ Lauren Dane
Groundhog Day quotes by Lauren Dane
At the end of the day aren't we all strangers hoping to find the one person who can see the beauty we each posses on the inside? ~ Glenna Maynard
Groundhog Day quotes by Glenna Maynard
The rain has held back for days and days, my God, in my arid heart. The horizon is fiercely naked---not the thinnest cover of a soft cloud, not the vaguest hint of a distant cool shower.

Send thy angry storm, dark with death, if it is thy wish, and with lashes of lightning startle the sky from end to end.

But call back, my lord, call back this pervading silent heat, still and keen and cruel, burning the heart with dire despair.

Let the cloud of grace bend low from above like the tearful look of the mother on the day of the father's wrath ~ Rabindranath Tagore
Groundhog Day quotes by Rabindranath Tagore
Illusions can and do create PHYSICAL Dis-Ease within our bodies. So it's most important to master our thoughts, to become cognizant of what we are spending our precious mental energy on each moment of every day. ~ Alaric Hutchinson
Groundhog Day quotes by Alaric Hutchinson
You're twelve years old. One horrible day your best friend's family moves to another town. You speak to your friend on the telephone now and then, but telephone conversations just aren't the same as those late-night sessions with the flashlights blinking out Morse code. Your second-best friend, who lives in the house next door to yours, eventually becomes your new best friend. It's time to teach your new best friend some Morse code and get the late-night flashlights blinking again. ~ Charles Petzold
Groundhog Day quotes by Charles Petzold
I dedicate my love and whole heart this Memorial Day to my Dad, a soldier, who like many others, suffers in silence with pride and honor. ~ Pink
Groundhog Day quotes by Pink
Everyone should get dirt on his hands each day. Doctors, intellectuals. Politicians, most of all. How can we presume to uplift the life of the working man, if we don't respect his work? ~ Barbara Kingsolver
Groundhog Day quotes by Barbara Kingsolver
The best jokes resonate because they uncover ridiculousness in our daily lives, reveal the silliness - and sometimes sadness - of things we see every day. ~ Rachel Sklar
Groundhog Day quotes by Rachel Sklar
I can spend the day without writing or reading, but I can't spend a day without listening to music. I listen to music on a Walkman; it's from the 19th century, I know. ~ Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt
Groundhog Day quotes by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt
What we become shouldn't be dictated by the mud and the dung and the dust and the fire and the ice and the dirt and the spit that hit us in the face, but what we become must be a choice made every day in the heart; and they who threw all of that at us to try and defile us– they will look up at us and see us no less beautiful. And even more beautiful. ~ C. JoyBell C.
Groundhog Day quotes by C. JoyBell C.
I kind of love going to weddings - it's a guilty pleasure. I've never been the wedding-y type girl dreaming about the big day, the dress, but I always cry. Always. Even if I don't know the bride that well, I'm verklempt! ~ Alison Brie
Groundhog Day quotes by Alison Brie
I couldn't keep living this lie for a minute more. I've been sober for two hundred and eighty-three days. My sobriety requires me to apologize to you, but my heart can't take another day without you knowing how much I still love you, and how deeply sorry I am for the pain I've caused you. ~ Kindle Alexander
Groundhog Day quotes by Kindle Alexander
Oh, I hope I don't teach. Because look what we did: we saved the zoo animals and the nice children, and we damned the afflicted and the blacks. You know what I do every day in that classroom? I do everything in my power to make sure those poor souls won't learn the obvious lesson. ~ Chris Cleave
Groundhog Day quotes by Chris Cleave
God spared my life not so that I could live for me but so that I could just give everything to Him. You know, God's not asking for much. he's asking you to give up something you were never created to be so that you can become who he says you are. It's really not that much. I mean, Mercy woke us up today so that Love gave us one more day to manifest Him and not us. ~ Todd White
Groundhog Day quotes by Todd White
Today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well therefore to this day. ~ Francis Gray
Groundhog Day quotes by Francis Gray
If you're waiting for a special occasion to make your next trip happen, then consider this: The day you get off the couch and head for the airport, that's the special occasion. ~ Patricia Schultz
Groundhog Day quotes by Patricia Schultz
Among people I have met, the few whom I would term "great" all share a kind of unquestioned, fierce dedication; an utter lack of doubt about the value of their activities (or at least an internal impulse that drives through any such angst); and above all, a capacity to work (or at least to be mentally alert for unexpected insights) at every available moment of every day of their lives. ~ Stephen Jay Gould
Groundhog Day quotes by Stephen Jay Gould
Some people you meet and they're your friend for a day. Some you meet and you never really know at all. And then there are those who get caught inside your soul and stay there forever. ~ Melodie Ramone
Groundhog Day quotes by Melodie Ramone
Don't let those people steal your day ~ Sherrilyn Kenyon
Groundhog Day quotes by Sherrilyn Kenyon
When I think about that first DeBarge album, I remember being so green ... just pristine. Nothing mattered to me but writing songs. I remember staying locked up in a room with my piano and just singing and writing songs all day long. I remember being a perfectionist about it ... wanting to change this and fix that. ~ El DeBarge
Groundhog Day quotes by El DeBarge
Inner quiet can be cultivated. Meditation is a healing balm to a frazzled brain existing in a hectic world. ~ Amy Leigh Mercree
Groundhog Day quotes by Amy Leigh Mercree
